Chapter 95: Selfishness (Part 2).

The time kept passing with not much going on, the legal procedure for a preliminary hearing was fortunately waived by Lincoln, under Lori's (forceful) advise, arguing on the victim being unable to provide a valid testimony due to her "delicate" condition, and the appeal was received with not much resistance by the prosecution, as the judge continued giving not much weight to the evidence of a party that wasn't even committed to showing everything, to the prosecutor's dismay.

Through tribulations and hefty paperwork, Lori was finally notified of the date for the trial, with just 5 days remaining for the idiot to get a lawyer.

But he was still refusing help.

She was currently on her way to that apartment, as per her duty, ensuring that he wouldn't try escaping or anything.

But it was becoming a huge risk for her, not for any external reasons, that is, as she continued irresponsibly texting on her phone while driving.

*booboo bear, how are our babies doing?*

1:24PM

She knew her anxiety was rising, so for her own good she decided to simply close the chat window and focus on driving, she still had some hope that her sweetheart would not do something drastic.

But she had to acknowledge… that there were problems in paradise, her "happily ever after" was in jeopardy.

And it was all because of her pedophile brother!

But… her mind was a warfare in the moment, as a crazy, ridiculous feeling was growing on her, and she hated every part of it.

And it only increased every time she visited either his apartment or her house.

- Well, so much for 2 vs. 1 eh guys? - Lincoln claimed proudly, jumping out of his bed with the controller in his hands, staring down at the two guys that came to visit him to play a healthy round of Deadly Combat.

- Well, I have to admit, I've gotten rustier, haven't really played Videogames in a while buddy - Clyde ignored his slightly boisterous attitude and admitted shamefully.

- Yeah, and I kept sayin' I don get all this junk fellers, reminds me of how y'all thought I stood a chance at the arcade while gettin' ran over - Liam complained, crossing his arms.

- Hey, don't worry, it's not that serious Liam - Lincoln immediately regretted his action and sat supportingly to the side - But I thought living with Lana would at least teach you some of the basics -

- Ah… Geez, now that you mention it, mah lil' lass did mention she was real big into this stuff… at one point - Liam recalled while placing a hand on his chin, as his smile faded - I kinda wanted to give her something for that, but the ol' business was not doin' easy on us, and we didn't have much to call a TV anyway - The toughened farmer admitted, looking down - …Mee Maw passing made a lot of things harder fellers -

- Right, sorry for asking that - Lincoln, likewise, felt bad for asking the question.

- …You could have helped yourself by asking us Liam, your friends were still there for you - Clyde, on the other hand, gave criticism, looking sternly at his friend.

- Yeh… Sorry lad, but I was getting real tired of all the questions 'bout Lana, and… I dunno, I was just afraid of the truth comin' out you catch me, what if y'all reacted like Lincoln here? - The redhead confessed, staring at the albino with some residual fear

- Yeah… I can see why - Lincoln rubbed the back of his head, nodding in understanding.

Which prompted him to truly open up, looking at his estranged friend with regret.

- Liam, I'm really sorry for what happened back then, it wasn't right to stick to your business and police Lana about it, and I can't really excuse myself for the way that I treated you - Lincoln whispered with difficulty, pouring his heart in it - I was a fucking hypocrite… -

- Hey, all's in the past now lad, if I accepted Clyde's invitation you can bet a thousand cows that I left that dust behind - Liam spoke calmly, reassuring his friend.

- …Thanks Liam - Lincoln struggled to accept the apology, but decided to take him by his word.

Then, the white haired man turned to his ebony friend.

- And Clyde, again, you didn't need to do this buddy, your wife was waiting for you in Canada, and I think you should try to move on from this as soon as possible - Lincoln said with heavy concern in his eyes.

- It's fine buddy, really, I'll just re-schedule another flight next week after the trial is done… they need me as a witness after all… - Clyde responded calmly, but he couldn't avoid tensing up for that last part.

- At least let me pay you back the ticket - Lincoln insisted.

- Lincoln, I already said it's ok, and regardless, I think having the chance to recover a part of the Action News Team is more than worth it - The chef dismissed the help, looking at both of his estranged friends with serenity.

- …Well howdy that's a name I hadn't heard in a long time y'all - Liam recalled with nostalgia at the mention of the former group of friends.

- Yeah… we might as well be the Action Creeps Team now - Lincoln joked with self-deprecating humor, somehow getting a chuckle out of Liam.

- Hehe, yeah you said it lad, but I'm walkin' back to the yard if I'm not the happiest creep there ever was - The farmer commented proudly.

- Right, congratulations to the new dad, your daughter is beautiful Liam - Clyde didn't miss his chance to stand in support of his friend.

- Dang it, wish I could meet her - Lincoln, on the other hand, complained loudly as he hadn't been able to see his niece, or even a single photo of her.

- Damn right there with you pal - Liam added - wish I could see her in person, getting stuck watching her birth via cellphone is not exactly my jam either, but i'm just glad she's as chubby and pink as ol' Virginia's daughters - He concluded with folded arms, being at peace with himself.

- Yeah don't worry Liam, I'm sure once this Is over, you'll be able to meet her properly, I promise I'll do everything I can to ensure you two live a life without any problems - Lincoln addressed his friend's situation empathically - I'll ask Lori if there's a way to get her registered while giving you full parental rights -

- Well geez, thanks feller - The farmer responded shyly.

But then, he turned to face the albino seriously.

- And what about yeh? D'ya want us to give you a hand with seeing the lil' Lass? -

- …Liam, dude, remember that I'm legally forbidden from being anywhere near her - Lincoln got caught up in the suggestion, but quickly stabilized to remind his friend of his situation.

- Well I'm talking about slippin' by, How 'bout I lend you meh farm and bring the lass and hide you there 'till the cops give up? - Liam wasn't giving up, determined to help his friend.

- Look, thanks for the help Liam, but it really doesn't matter, I guess I'll get to watch her on the trial so it's fine, and she can always visit me in jail - Lincoln attempted to dispel his friend's concern, but was ultimately unable to establish eye contact.

- …You really that certain it's the cell for you? - Liam raised an eyebrow, unwilling to let go of the topic.

- …Of course, once I tell the truth, I'll leave no chances for any other interpretation, and given that I won't be paying any lawyers, things will happen as they should, and Lola will finally be able to rebuild her life - Lincoln responded with a serene smile, facing the TV, which was still showing the winning screen of his character.

- Well… I dunno lad - Liam looked to the side, feeling uncomfortable due to his friend's harsh words - Look, I ain't gon' pretend to get all the junk that happened between you and your sister all these years, but I'm assuming that it's not all that different from my experience with my cowgirl, those lasses are eerily similar after all - He said with a renewed smile, looking at the ceiling - …to be honest with y'all… I did not come with the plan to hide - He confessed, still lost in thoughts - I was in a rough period of my life back then fellers, Mee Maw had just passed away and the lil' lass was the only one standin' up and keeping ol' me some company in that farm, then the Rusty started bickering that I was going out with the lil' lass to some people and they got real nasty, worse than you lad, so I kinda, stopped going to school and threw that damn cellphone away -

Suddenly, the redhead started lowering his head, staring at the floor with some traces of contempt still lingering.

- So yeah, that's when me and her began goin' out for real, and she convinced me to get a shotgun to get give the pests a real good scare, which did make them stop with the harassment, and when she started throwing up… well, that's when she convinced me to drop everything and hide - Liam spoke mostly to himself, looking back into his life.

But then, he resumed his stance, looking at his friend seriously.

- And don't ya dare think I wasn't concerned with her droppin' out of her studies, her other hobbies, everything, you can bet 10 races down the mud stall I begged her to reconsider, I didn't want to ruin her life lad, and she wasn't ready to leave her ranch, but that cowgirl was more stubborn than a goat in heat ey, almost beat me up to it I tell ya - He finalized his tale with mild hilarity.

But Lincoln was still confused about the point of his story, and the farmer noticed that.

- Well, the point I'm coming at is… that gal would give her life for me, not matter what I have to say about it… Wouldn't that also be the case for yours? -

- Liam, please stop - Lincoln turned his face sharply to the other side, getting quite upset by his friends casual talk.

- Hey, I don't want no problem fellers, just sayin', 'cause I'm sure if I were the one going through this legal bollock, first thing my cowgirl would tell me would be to believe in her and not give up, god almighty would know how she would feel if I was behind bars - Liam said defensively, looking down a little at imagining the depressing state of his girlfriend.

- Ugh, Liam, you don't get it, what I've done to Lola isn't comparable at all with what you've been through -

- And that's when I have to step up buddy - Now, it was Clyde interrupting his friend, as he placed a supporting hand in his shoulder - No matter what could have happened back in the house, or here in this apartment, you have to let go of the past, Lincoln - The pastry expert insisted while increasing his grasp - Focus on the present dude… it's what worked for me, after all…. -

- … -

- Lincoln, you made me take some scans of the story, you knew something like this would happen, didn't you? -

- … -

- And for what? -

- … -

- Not answering eh? - Clyde kept pushing the issue, a serious look plastered on his face - Then I'll tell you what I did with those -

- huh? - Lincoln finally turned his head to focus on his friend.

- The story is safe, and I know that it's not over buddy - Clyde responded positively to his friend's earned attention, mustering a smirk - If you ever felt like not being deserving of any of the diamonds, then I could work as a third party, and be the judge of that -

- … -

- And what I can tell you, is that DeLola is very much in charge of that quest, and that she's no longer on her own, so the very least Triton could do, is to accept her help -

- And also that of your ol' pals - Liam added, not wanting to be left behind.

- Guys… - Lincoln tried to object, but no words were coming.

- Here lad, from man to man, let me tell ya somethin' - Liam followed through, not allowing for the albino to sort his thoughts - Despite everything that I've heard y'all said about my thing with her being weird'n all, I don't regret what happened, at least not anymore, and I'm just thinkin', that you shouldn't either, y'know how the ol' sayin' goes -

- … -

- You can't help who you fall in love with -

.

Those words kept ringing in Lori's head, once again, standing behind the door, not even willing to interrupt Lincoln in such an… unique, situation, with friends that are not even family coming in to support him, instead of just letting him give up.

(But if blood is thicker than water, how come you feel like a lesser being?)

She kept thinking about that memory, as she drove to her destination.

But of course, that wasn't the only thing that kept bugging her.

Lola closed the door leading to her twin's room as softly as she could, aiming to make as little noise as possible, the new mother needed a time for herself and her baby alone, as the many activities that they enjoyed thorough the day left her exhausted and in need of a nap.

After that, she went downstairs and sat on the empty couch to find a moment for herself, maybe she could pay the subscription for the princess channel to catch up with the latest pageant.

Or maybe not.

Maybe she would finally use her laptop and write some more of her detective novel, all the chaos these last weeks had kept her distracted from her new hobby, but suffice to say, they had given her a lot of inspiration to continue her drama-filled story.

- Uh, Lola - Or maybe later.

- Hi Lis - Lola closed her laptop and turned to pay attention to her little genius sister, not at all unwelcoming her approach.

Lisa then took the wordless invitation to sit besides her, trying to find the correct words.

- …First of all, I want to manifest my complete disapproval of the actions taken by Luan, I found her approach to be unproductive and quite frankly, nefarious, and I want to reaffirm my stance that there are… sufficient advantages in creating a welcoming environment for your desired relationship with our brother that outweighs the associated problems of consanguinamory - The nerdy girl prefaced, stuttering on the way, as she treaded into a subjective territory.

- Uh huh? - Lola nodded, but raised an eyebrow at the untimely topic.

- That said - Lisa straightened her back and made eye contact with her sister, trying to appear secure - I also believe one of the points that Lori made during that… debate, carries some weight, and I would want to address it sooner than later -

- And that is? - Lola tried to follow, but continued staring weirdly at her sister.

- Your personal life, Lola - Lisa prefaced, but her secure look quickly turned into an uncertain frown - I am heavily aware that my invention mislead all of… us into believing that your feelings towards our brother would never reappear, but I also applied that logic to infer that you would never fall in love with anyone for that matter, and… - The scientist couldn't finish her idea, as her look of shame intensified and forced her to look down.

- and…? - Lola said, curious of her sister to finish her idea.

- Well… - Lisa continued vacillating, ignoring her formal speech for a moment - Was there any point in which you could have found… another guy, attractive? But that you didn't pursue because of your… condition, at the time? - At last, Lisa found it in herself to finish her sentence.

And the question did indeed force Lola into a thinking stance, focusing in the black screen of the turned-off TV while she buried her head on the couch.

- Lisa, I think we can both agree that our childhood and teenager-hood were not exactly what we can call… normal, at least compared to the others -

- …Explain your reasoning? - Lisa struggled to process her words, not quite getting were her sister was going with that statement.

- You're a child super genius, I'm sure you can figure out what I mean for your case, being more concerned with institutions and government agencies asking for your help despite not even officially graduating from elementary, you know exactly what I'm talking about Lis - Lola stated calmly, still focused on the void staring back at her from the TV - As for me… even before this whole mess started, I was already not exactly what you could call normal either -

Lisa remained focused on her.

- I was a pageant girl Lis, I was homeschooled for a significant portion of my life, whenever pageant season came, I was watching all you guys do your thing with your friends while I stayed practicing, I didn't really have close people like Darcy or even a somewhat sentient companion like Todd, I had Mr. Sprinkles and Eunice for my secrets, that was it - Lola stopped a moment, reflecting on her life - And when I was in school, I was always the role model, the celebrity, the… object of desire. And nothing more -

- … -

- …Well, long story short, I didn't really have many boys to actually make a connection with, other than… him, so I was always self-conscious about it, even when I met some real charmers out there - Lola then lifted her head from the couch, looking at her sister with renewed energy - I knew that even back then, Love or not, trying to connect with boys outside of the pageant industry was not possible, and that I would always compare them to my brother, and they would always lose, so to answer your question - The ex-pageant competitor paused briefly, mustering a warm smile - Even if I didn't really have the effect of any drug, I really just wasn't interested, they could be hot, but just thinking about the idea of love or sex with them did nothing to me -

- …Fascinating - Lisa nodded, genuinely impressed with her sister's perspective - However, I believe there's one thing were you may be in the wrong, sister - The scientist said while standing up, smiling back at her weirdly calm sister.

- That is? - Lola responded defensively.

- I'm on the firm belief that you had more people in your life, outside of your family or your plushies - Lisa stated, standing firmly with her arms on the back - Which is precisely why… - She said while pulling her phone, checking a GPS that had a red dot marked on it - Ah, finally! -

- huh? -

- You should probably assess your conviction in front of them -

And after finishing her announcement, Lisa headed to the entrance, opened the door and politely stood aside, welcoming her guest.

- Salutations, It is my honor to receive you two on behalf of my older sister, please step inside - She said proudly, standing back to allow Lola to see the surprise guests.

- Is it true, Lola's here? - The first of the two figures said with great anxiety, rushing in a little faster.

Then she actually laid her eyes on the blonde.

- Oh my god, LOLA! - The brown, pig tailed girl rushed in to tackle the startled blonde.

- Uh, Meli? - Lola whispered to herself, as she stood still, unable to move a muscle, the shock in her body overwhelming her senses.

- Where have you been? What happened? Why did you stop talking to me? - The girl started blasting the unsuspecting blonde with an array of questions.

And that's were the other figure stepped in.

- Hey now darling, let's leave the heavy load for later, we're just passing by! - The other girl, dressed in a beautiful blue pageant dress that revealed her curves and her beautiful ebony skin, stood in front of the other teenagers, sassily placing her hands own her hips - Lola, love, you really are hopeless -

- …Cricky? - Lola then turned her attention to the other girl, major pageant queen and known teen supermodel Cricket Van Doren was now in front of her, however impossible it might seem.

Her only reaction following that was to shift her attention back to her little sister, signaling with her expression that she wanted answers.

And Lisa simply sighed, aware of the non-verbal communication.

- I managed to extract from Lana and Lucy that you did have a few acquaintances in common, so I took it upon myself to make a background research of their personalities, including current hobbies and profession, so that I could deem them as safe, after that, I managed to establish a sustainable communication with them and alerted them of your new, ahem… predicament - The scientist noted, coughing a little - They agreed upon a visit regardless, so please do not bother yourself with unnecessary explanations, they already now - She clarified with as much of a supportive tone as she could, but couldn't avoid making a mischievous grin in the process.

After that, the nerdy girl walked back to stand closer to her overwhelmed sister.

- And, please, if you must, try to open up to them this time around, I may be an advocate to impersonal approaches, but I know exactly what it feels like to pretend among peers, and in that regard, you might be right, we may be more similar than we appear, Lola -

And with that, the genius returned upstairs, happy, for once, for actually trying something to assist her struggling sister, after years of deception and excepticism.

- Wow, looks like Lisa has changed a lot, for what I last remember, she was causing a ruckus on the mall with a robot - Cricket made a remark of her own, as the younger sister disappeared from view.

But now, back to the topic at hand, she also took a seat on the couch, focusing on her lost friend.

- And girl, what's up with you? Are you into ghosting people now? - The model said with confident sarcasm, poking a rib at her friend.

- Seriously Lola, Why did you start ignoring me? Why did you stop coming to school? Did I do something wrong back then? - Meli added her own piece, showing clear signs of anxiety.

Although, not with the same characteristic shyness as before.

And Lola remained still, not quite knowing where to look, as she slowly sunk her head.

- I-I'm sorry - Was the only thing she could muster.

- Hey now, it's ok love, we're just here to catch up, ease up and give me the goods~ - Cricket insisted, getting closer to her friend and hugging the back of her head, almost locking the blonde in place.

- Yeah… it's not my intention to make you feel uncomfortable Lola, but, well, I'm hearing nasty things on the media all the time, but then your sister came and gave us a completely different story, so I really don't know what to believe, so maybe, would you be ok with actually telling us? - Meli squirmed on her place, but kept a hopeful and confident demeanor.

- The… allegations you mean? - Lola caught up with their intention, as she herself had unfortunately heard the "news" on TV, getting filled with rage at the mere though.

- Yeah, duh? Like, girl just look at your SwiftyPic account, it's blowing up! - Cricket said with exasperation, as she proceeded to pick her phone - See? -

And Lola got to watch her inactive account, noticing how her popularity actually skyrocketed, rising from an impressive but nothing unusual 200k+ followers to over a million in the span of just three months!

She also got to watch some of the more recent comments.

"I can't believe that happened to u babe, but ur fans are with u"

"stay strong queen"

"i was also a victim of this shit, you'll make it through"

"I hope you someday return, I loved your pageant performance, your a natural baby"

To hear some of her followers offer their support, she had to admit, it felt good.

But then she looked at the other kind of "support" messages.

"Hope that mf gets what he deserves"

"I can't fucking stand this shit, pos like those shouldn't be called brothers, I hope he dies a slow and painful death"

"I'm with you, if I see that pedo on the streets I'll bring justice by my own hand"

"Hey beautiful, I know your afraid to show ur face because of monsters like him, but heres a real man if u want to talk, PM me"

"To think some pedos here pretend that incest is ok, I fucking hate social media"

"Straight white males are groomers, shocking…"

"This user has been offline for a long time, she probably offed herself, wouldn't blame her, we can only hope the justice system actually does their job, that fucking bastard deserves the electric chair"

"Hey wasn't that the same dude involved in the pageant coach fiasco a few years ago? lmao the universe has a weird sense of humor"

"I heard he worked for goggol, let's raid them until they give us personal info, maybe we can find where he lives"

And that was enough for the ex-pageant competitor to grind her teeth, her face glowing with a distinctive red, as she began grasping Cricket's phone hard, creating a dent in the protector cover with her nails.

Cricket realized it a little too late, but she still managed to remove her phone from her upset friend by force.

- Hey, calm down hun, this one's expensive - She said hastily, checking for the damaged status.

- Uh, ah, sorry! - Lola quickly laid down, coveting her head with her hands in shame.

- It's… ok - Cricket let it go, but she was still hesitant.

- No, really, I'm sorry Cricky, it's just, ugh, this is why I don't use social media anymore! - Lola exclaimed angrily, removing her hands from her eyes and looking at her estranged friend with a noticeable frown.

- Uh, but, Lola, most people are in support of you - Meli intervened next, confused at her outburst.

- Yeah, so great, I'm the "victim", and my brother is the "monster", fucking amazing support! - Lola turned to stare at her other friend, evident anger rising through.

And it was then, that both Meli and Cricket looked at each other, confirming their suspicion.

- So… is that not what's going on? - The model spoke first, looking to inquire into her friend's life.

- NO! He's sweet, and caring, and attentive, and cute, and he's the best brother I could have ever asked for, he was always there for me, he was the only person I felt comfortable with for a long time, and he's probably the most forgiving person I know, he's not a monster guys, if anything, I'm the selfish bitch that wanted him all to myself, and now he's paying for something that I did! - The blonde said with complete exasperation, panting hard and leaking bitter tears from her eyes.

Which made the other two girls comprehend Lisa's words, entirely.

Meli went first, with a comforting smile.

- Thanks Lola, for finally opening up to us, I get it now - She said softly.

- Uh? - Lola, still caught up in her outburst, turned to see her previously shy friend.

- That's why you chose him as your dancing partner right? - The pigtailed girl said, quirking an eyebrow in confidentiality.

- …Yes - Lola looked to the side, trying to hide her shame.

- Well, it's a little ironic, don't you think? - Meli confided with a serene attitude, folding her arms - The most confident girl that I've ever known, the one that taught me how to open up and stop being shy, and she's the one that could never open up to her friend, no offense, but it's kind of funny! - She said with a small chuckle.

Which for some reason, made Lola feel comfortable.

- Hey! It was a pretty serious topic, like, don't you think it's weird? - The blonde questioned with an impatient look.

- Why, it IS weird, but you know… If you had actually told me that back then - Now, it was Meli retracting a little, touching her fingers with apparent shyness - I would have tried to understand Lola, and it would have been a far better outcome than just… losing a friend -

- Meli… - Lola didn't really know what to do, overwhelmed by guilt.

- Um, maybe, if you don't mind, c-c-could we hang out again? - The girl in grey stuttered, retaining a little bit of her previous personality.

But her request was genuine.

- Yes! - Lola didn't think about it twice, as she leaned forward and grabbed her former friend to envelop her in a bear hug.

As the duo separated, both with a warm smile of fulfillment, the other girl in the room made herself present.

- Ahem, I'm still here you know? - Cricket announced with impatience, tapping the floor with her foot.

- Never forgot - Lola, likewise turned around to match her expression.

- Darling, I have to be honest, I suspected there was something wild with you and your brother, like seriously? Your coach? Being In charge of your wardrobe? At 11? Blowing kisses at him in the middle of the runway? -

- Oh, you saw that… - Lola remembered her actions of the past, looking down.

- Yeah, like damn I've some bitches run to their daddies after the pageant, but it seems you already had your "daddy" huh? - Cricket continued her relentless teasing, maintaining her seductive look.

- Ugh stop, you make it sound even weirder than it already is - Lola folded her arms in indignation, but looked back up, facing her former ally.

- Hey, just messin' with you, don't take it personal - Cricket reaffirmed with a wink - Honestly, I'm kind of jealous -

- Huh? Why would you? - At that, Lola expressed genuine curiosity.

- My brother's an asshole love, he doesn't even know I exist, and when he does it's always to argue about stupid shit or take my stuff, I swear one of these days we'll kill each other! - Cricket said impatiently, waving her hand with clear resentment.

- Ow, so you want your big bro to "cuddle" you? - This time around, Lola took her chance to tease her back.

- Ew gross no! But he could be a little nicer, sorta like yours - Cricket screeched in disgust.

- Well, I sort get what you mean, we also used to fight over stupid shit all the time too, but if I'm being honest… I was usually the one that started it - Lola confessed with shame.

- Ok? -

- He's a dork, he's boring and predictable, he's into all sort of loser crap, he can't be quiet for a single second, he's always looking to help others, even above himself, he's stubborn as hell! And he can get quite carried away when things don't go his way - The blonde rolled her eyes and blew a huff of air, not fond of the memories.

- Yeah? -

- And I still want to argue with him all the time, but… - Immediately, as Lola kept thinking about him, her stare became warmer, and a faint blush appeared on her face - …I also want to share his dorky stuff, and kiss him, and cuddle with him… and the other stuff too - She admitted while looking to the side, lost in thoughts.

- Woah, now I'm even more jealous! - Cricked caught that and her eyes were lightened up with genuine admiration.

- Why? thought you didn't want your brother that way? - Lola inquired with a quirked eyebrow.

- No silly, I'm jealous of your bro too! - The model said with no hesitation, jumping a little to sit even closer to her friend -

- Come again? - Lola did not understand her reaction, looking weirdly at her sudden movement.

- Bitch just look at these buns~ - Cricket teased seductively, grabbing Lola's asscheeks and rubbing them - How did you get them so big? I exercise my buttocks daily and people barely notice my crack -

- Ah, Cricky? -

- And look at these babies, what are they, Ds? - The model continued assaulting her friend's body, sensing her bust from under her pink sweater - And he gets to have all that? Lucky him~ -

- Ok, that's enough! - Lola hid her body while blushing wildly, earning a chuckle from her pageant friend.

- Ok I'll stop~ - Cricket rolled her eyes with indifference - But seriously love, you're gorgeous! Say, I can give you a lift to Miss Teen USA, wanna give it a try? -

- Eh, it's ok Cricky, I don't really do those anymore - Lola confessed, a little more relieved than she thought she would.

And now, Cricket had a new perspective of things as well.

- Really? But, darling, you're one of the strongest, meanest bitches in the biz, a lot of newcomers looked up to you, and you told me that it was your dream - Cricket said seriously, inquiring into her friends predisposition.

- Yeah, I know - Lola looked down, thinking about it herself - To be fair, I was tired of the fakeness of it all -

- Oh, ok, I sort of get that, but the payout is fine, don't you think? -

- mmm - Lola wasn't so sure - It's just, you get into a world that exploits you for your appearance, you meet a lot of people that come to you with the fakest smile they can muster, while you know that deep down, they're miserable, you compete with the kind of backstabbing snakes that would bring you down if they could, and for what? Fame? Money? Attention? - Lola emphasized that last word, placing a hand in her chest - Sweetie, you're a pro, and I'm glad you still enjoy that world, but me personally, I'm out - She didn't even hesitate with her answer, simply dismissing the notion with a handwave.

- Wow, didn't realize it bothered you that much Lola, excuse moi - Cricket stared with disbelief at her former rival.

- And besides, let's be real dear, you do know about the requirements for applications right? - Lola wasn't done, as she once again referred to her popular friend - They need chaste, virgin girls, they need innocence, and now that all this crap is out, I can't really promote myself like that -

- …Well, you can always-

- Use victim points? - Lola interrupted her friend, before she could even finish, reading her mind without an issue - Forget it, that would be an admission that my brother did something wrong -

- Well, you're right Lola - Cricket lowered her head, knowing that any more discussion in the matter would be pointless - However, I think that there's something that you got wrong - She said with renewed courage.

- Huh? - Lola stared at her, incredulously.

- …Not everyone in that industry was a backstabbing hoe you know? … I know I wasn't - The once confident pageant girl stated bluntly, still facing down.

- … - And Lola didn't really know how to respond, memories of her distrust towards people close to her passing by, tormenting her.

- I guessed you though sharing anything closer with me than a strictly professional alliance was not a bright move, and I get that, opening up in an industry that brings you down at the slightest mistake isn't easy love, I've also received my fair share of criticism - At last, the pageant queen lifted her head to face her former rival with a confident expression - But even then, I just want you to know that I did consider you a real friend Lola -

- … -

- We met with the wrong foot, I get that, you tried to pretend living a better life just to impress me, but once that truth was out… I actually met the real you, and I really liked what I saw ma Chère, I was just really busy with my own pursuits back then to have time to come here too often, but I really would have liked to spend more time with you -

- … -

- So, well, if it's not bad, would you give me that chance? - After the silence, Cricket looked at her friend with a hopeful expression, grabbing her hands with her own.

- Cricky… - And Lola was once again overwhelmed with emotion - I-I'm sorry to you too, I didn't realize you… cared that much about me -

- Come on girl, I'm speaking how I actually speak in front of you, you can bet yo fine ass I aint finna snitch on anything you told us today, if that doesn't show I care, then beat my ass 'cause i'm staying a few more hours - Cricket spoke with the sassiest tone she could use.

- Ok… Thanks… friend - Lola finally allowed the word to come out of her self, her real self.

- Great, and now that we're gettin' it back, why don't you actually present me your other friend back there - Now, with a more relaxed tone, the model pointed to the friend sitting quietly on the other side.

- Yeah Lola, I've been meaning to meet your friends from the pageant circle! - Meli, likewise commented on this opportunity excitedly.

- Oh, right, you guys never met - Lola recalled a little too late, looking awkwardly at her two friends -

- Well, you never told me what you did In your pageant performances - Meli claimed with curiosity.

- Same, your school life is a mystery darling, open up a little please?~ - Cricket seconded the notion, leaning in closer.

- Right - Lola acknowledged the small jab, sitting awkwardly.

But then, as her confidence grew back, she took a small breath of fresh air.

And fully recomposed.

- Cricky, this is Meli Ramos, my best friend from school and a real videogame guru - The ex-pageant queen said with warmth, staring at the ebony model.

- And Mel, this is Cricket Van Doren, one of the most proficient pageant queens in the US, and also… my best friend from that circle - The blonde then turned around to repeat the introduction.

- Pleased to meet you, I already had good vibes around you before we even came here, you're also a real cutie! - Cricket said teasingly, lifting her hand to greet her new acquaintance.

- Same, I didn't know there were also other kind hearted girls like you in that business… Lola didn't speak too high on those - Meli accepted the handshake, still impressed at this unknown side of her friend.

- Honestly, I get her cynicism, it can get pretty darn bad, although… - Now, the pageant expert turned to Lola, crossing her arms with an expectant stare - Lola, I see you're still making some fine ass job in your appearance, you really need to teach me that make up technique -

- Oh, you mean the way I applied my eyeliner? It's great isn't it? I finally got my brother's style on the mirror, works every time, if you want I can-

- Gotcha! - Exclaimed the other fashion expert, startling her friend.

- Uh? About what? - Lola commented on the untimely interruption.

- You still care about the world of beauty, don't lie to me -

And Lola realized the trap she had fallen into.

- Ugh, okay, you got me, I do care a little bit, you don't just get this figure by laying around and eating ice cream all day - The blonde replied sassily, showing her pride.

- Now that's what I want to see, how about lending yourself to a photoshoot? bitch I can turn you famous again in the blink of an eye, I've also got some good friends in Hollywood that can give you a boost - Cricket commented excitedly, never taking her suspicious smirk.

- mmm… - Lola thought about it, eyeing her friend suspiciously - Nah, I'm fine - She dismissed the notion with another condescending handwave.

- Aw, why not? - Cricket complained with disappointment.

- Let's just say, I didn't really have a good time in Hollywood last time I tried, and well, to be honest with you… I'm ready to live a life style where being famous is not compatible sweetie - Lola explained with lost eyes, caught in her thoughts.

- …ok? Weird? - Cricked complained, tilting her head to one side.

- Yeah, I know, but… - Lola simply looked warmly at both of her friends, displaying an unwavering smile of serenity. - I know what makes me happy now, and I'll fight for that -

Silence struck for a moment, as the other girls attempted to understand her words.

- …Damn girl, you really are certain about this huh? - Cricket cringed a little, but still nodded in an attempt at understanding her friend - guess I can't change your mind - She shook her head, focusing on her friend again - then how about just a little make up session for the good times, you in? - She proposed an alternative plan, looking to spend some time with her friend.

- Yeah, I would honestly love seeing that - Meli agreed, also playfully begging - And how about after that I make you both an account in World of Witchcraft? I promise I'll carry you to the raids to level you up faster - The not-so-shy girl added with excitement.

- …Will you leave me alone if I accept? - Lola sighed and looked at the energetic girls with a frown.

- Yes! - Both exclaimed in unison.

- Ok… - Lola responded with feigned disinterest.

But that quickly dissipated when she started chuckling.

- Let's go! - She said while grabbing both of her friends forcefully by the hand, making them run upstairs.

And that was all that Lori managed to hear, as she proceeded to turn back, she was maybe planning on actually obeying Lincoln's request to assist Lana with the registration of her baby, but once again, she remained stuck, hiding close to the garage, not knowing if she even wanted to enter the dreaded place, simply peeking over the window, avoiding detection, as she listened to Lola's latest development.

And once again, doubt was invading her, assaulting her with non-stop unwanted thoughts.

(Are you truly helping anyone here?)

Among other things.

Back at the present, she continued driving towards the idiot's apartment, wanting to leave this growing (guilt) preoccupation aside, but as she entered the building and pulled the keys to the entrance.

She couldn't hold it back anymore.

She was going to regret this for sure, but as she pulled her phone, she came to the conclusion…

…That she had to do something about this.

Author's Notes:

hughmccabe96: Your concerns are pretty valid, the story is wrapping up *soon", as in, I can count the number of chapter lefts with my fingers, but I'm going to make sure that everything is answered, you may have noticed that the chapters are getting longer, and this specially holds meaning while we prepare for a final confrontation. I'm going to let this thematic mini-arc do the speaking for me, but rest easy, Lynn (Jr./Sr.), Stella, and some other characters have not been forgotten!

As for a sequel, I'm thinking of this story as a one and done thing, but I am aware I basically created a whole AU that lives and breathes outside of our main characters, so I won't deny myself a chance to revisit this universe at some point in the future, it's my dear baby to the Loud House community after all!

tjdunkley05: Your reviews are always a joy to read! I'm glad to know I was able to convey the emotional intensity of Lincoln and Luna exposing their own guilt to each other, and the conflict in Lola's heart for how she envisions a future (that probably can't be) with Lincoln, while Lana enjoys her time with Lena and her twin, I also hope I also able to convey the growing conflict in Lori's heart, despite her hardened stance against this depravity!

As for Lana's baby, I did receive a PM with another suggestion but I liked yours slightly better, it was really close to the name I had originally planned for her: Lina Hunnicutt, so it was a no brainer, again thank you for your suggestion!

Until next time dear readers.

Cheers!
