Chapter 1: Chemicals
"Rabbit, Rabbit," I mutter to myself, Tobias groggily looks at me through sleep-lidded eyes. "What about a rabbit?" He asks, pulling me close to his naked chest. I sigh contently, "It's July First, on the first day of every month, you are supposed to say rabbit, rabbit. It brings you good luck."
"According to whom?" Tobias asks skeptically.
"I had a patient tell me all about it once when I was in clinical for nursing school," I giggle. He wraps his arms around me, pulling me onto his chest, raising an eyebrow at me, whispering, like he doesn't believe me, "Does it really work?"
"I found you, didn't I?" I whisper back at him, playfully poking his shoulder, he laughs, "If you want to say finding me was luck, then, by all means, I guess it is luck, but, if you ask me, I am the lucky one, I found someone like you. I still can't believe you agreed to marry a guy as messed up as I am." He smirks kissing my forehead. I pretend to scowl at him, Tobias laughs, flipping us, I giggle, his lips meet mine in a sweet short kiss, he whispers against my lips, "I love you Tris, but us finding each other had nothing to do with luck or saying 'Rabbit, Rabbit' at the beginning of each month. It had everything to do with us both being in the right place at the right time," his voice soft, full of emotion as he speaks, staring into my eyes.
A smile tugs at my lips, he leans his forehead against mine, and I can't help but stare into his deep blue eyes, his lashes are long from this angle. I could stare into his eyes for the rest of my life and be content. As the words, I love you, hit me, my eyes close, feeling the love he holds for me behind them. My fingers slide up his sides to his shoulders, gripping them, pulling him to me. He flips us once again, maneuvering me onto his body. His fingers slide down my shoulders and back, setting onto my lower back, drawing small circles onto my skin. He embraces me tightly, pulling me to him, and at that moment, I want to feel every inch of his body against mine, but there is too much fabric in the way.
Instead, I settle for the way his arms make me feel. They make me feel safe, secure, like nothing in the world could ever harm me, ever again. My eyes open, they meet his, deep blue melting into light blue. His breath slides across my lips, tilting my head with his fingertips, he guides my lips to his. Our lips meet, and our tongues tangle, fighting for dominance, through the kiss, I try to convey how much I love him. His hands slide up my back, entangling into my hair, tugging at it. Our breathing becomes erratic the longer we kiss, the more heated the kiss becomes, he nips at my lips using his teeth and lips, drawing sounds from me. He lets out a low groan from his throat as we breaking away from one another, mischief written clearly in his eyes. "You kill me in a good way." He whispers into my ear. I smile, not replying to him.
"Aren't you going to be late for work?" I ask, glancing at the clock, he pulls me once again, tightly to him against his body, my fingers knot into his short hair, his arms encircle me, and he rolls us onto the bed, trapping us together in the sheets. His lips find mine again, his teeth lightly tug at my lower lip, leaving me a panting puddle. Pulling away from the kiss, a look of desire evident on his face, the little bit of clarity fighting with my lust-filled brain threatens to flee, I yell, panic in my voice, "Tobias! Work! Late!" My eyes finding the clock once again to see how late it actually is. He lazily looks at the clock, his lips moving from my lips to my neck, he murmurs against my skin, "No, the only thing I have is PT this morning at nine." I giggle, feeling my cheeks heat with embarrassment. I should have known that; he reminded me last night. He gently touches my cheeks with his fingertips as if he is trying to cool them, he grins, staring at me, "Hey, it's okay, you forgot. It's not your responsibility to memorize my schedule." He smiles at me, I smile back at him, his lips move back to mine, kissing me again, drawing me back into the moment. My fingers coil into his dog tags, pulling him closer to me, I want him as close as I can get him to me at that moment. His fingers skate down my sides, grasping my upper thighs, he throws them over his lower back as he begins to rock against me. "Tobias." I groan, his eyes snap open, meeting mine. His once dark blue eyes look almost black with lust, he smiles a mischievous smile at me. His lips slide down my neck, taking me back to paradise on earth. He whispers, "I know, Tris, I love you so much," between his kisses, torturing me, eliciting moans and groans from me like only he can do.
"I love you," I whisper, my fingertips slide underneath his sweatpants, trying to remove them. He smirks at me, "Always trying to get me naked?" I giggle, as Tobias's lips move to my chest, and we slip into our own little bubble, where Tobias's soon to be deployment can't hurt us.
Tobias's alarm breaks the morning quiet. He slams the alarm with his hand, frustration flashes through his eyes. I tightly hug him to me, not wanting to leave our bubble. He whispers frustratingly, "I need to get up love, shower, or else I will be late, then Colonel Asshat will have my ass, most definitely."
"It is a cute ass though, maybe he likes watching it run almost as much as I do." I giggle, Tobias rolls his eyes at me, continuing, " Yeah, well, if I am late, I know he would love to make me run extra for punishment." Tobias grimaces at the thought of being made to run extra, almost like he is in pain. I giggle at his expression, he shoots me a look, asking, "You think my discomfort is funny?" His arms cage me in, I change the subject, asking, "Do you really need to get up?" Pulling him even closer to me, my head resting on his toned, naked chest, not wanting him to leave.
He grins, wiggling his eyebrows, he murmurs, "Afraid so, as much as I would love to stay in this bed with you, forever. I need to get up. If I don't leave now, I will be in trouble. Colonel Asshat still doesn't like me from when I came onto the base, on leave, and I wasn't in proper Air Force attire. He still makes comments about it under his breath, if he isn't making a direct comment about it to me. Is it bad, I am counting down the days until we can leave Andrews to go to Langley?"
"I think so, especially since we just got here. Colonel Asshat, huh? Is that really his last name?" I ask, giggling, as Tobias's fingertips begin to tickle my sides, his fingers driving me wild.
"No, but it should be. That is what everyone calls him behind his back. He just doesn't know it yet." Tobias grins at me, placing kisses all over my face, then slips out of bed, heading to the closet to change into his PT uniform. I close my eyes, and I must fall back to sleep. Movement of the bed wakes me with gentle fingertips along my face, moving my hair, and a whisper, "Tris." My eyes snap open, meeting bright, shining, blue ones. Tobias sits on the edge of the bed in his PT uniform. The white short sleeve shirt is tucked into blue running shorts has one white stripe going diagonal on each leg. On the left short leg and left chest, there is an Air Force symbol, and he is wearing white socks with his orange, green, and black Nike running shoes.
"Princess, you are awake again!" He says, a smile gracing his lips.
"Yes, and you are wearing the new shoes, I got for you," I say with excitement, eyeing the black Nike running shoes with the bright green and orange tread. "I told you, I would wear them the next time, I had PT," he grins at me, I laugh, smiling back at him. My face seems to have a permanent smile on it, I recall the day I brought those sneakers home from the store to him. Tobias had a huge, tired-looking smile on his face as I handed him the shopping bag. He had just gotten off of work from working fourteen hours straight. He opened the bag carefully, a questioning look on his face, he asked, "What are these for? Oh God, did I forget our anniversary, your birthday, or wait what day is it? It isn't my birthday, right? These days are all starting to blend together since we got here."
"No Tobias! It isn't your birthday yet. It isn't January, and you are still in trouble for making me miss your half birthday. For not letting me celebrate it. I want to be able to celebrate the day my fiance was born since I missed your actual birthday. I want to celebrate every holiday with you."
"But to be fair. I didn't celebrate my birthday this past year, either. I was overseas, remember." He lifts an eyebrow at me, reminding me gently he was still with Stacy but deployed.
"Still, we could have celebrated your half birthday," I smirk, raising my eyebrows at him. "I still don't understand why it took me so long to pull out of you the answer to when your birthday was." I pout at him, he rolls his eyes toward the sky, knowing he will never hear the end of this until his birthday or half birthday comes around next year.
"Because Tris, my day of birth isn't worth celebrating?" He groans.
"Yes, it is." I urge, crossing my arms.
"No, it isn't. My mother died on my birthday, remember?"
"Yes, and I am sorry for that Tobias, but you can't blame yourself for that for the rest of your life. I'm not a mother, but any mother I know is always willing to give their life up for their child, look at Shauna, she would jump in front of a moving train to protect, Harmoni, and the baby isn't even born yet. The day of your birth is something worth celebrating to me. You want to know why? Because you were born, and you and me, Tobias Eaton, we were meant to be together." I grin at him.
He groans, "How many times do I need to apologize for not telling you when my birthday was, my love? So tell me why did you get me a present, if there are no special occasions?"
"Just open the bag! You bring me home presents all the time from overseas. Can't I bring you home a present for no reason!" I say excitedly, bouncing on my toes, wanting to see his reaction to the new sneakers I got him. "Yeah, but I bring you home presents to make up for not being here." He whispers, pulling the box from the bag, his eyes can barely stay open, I reply, "I don't need any presents from your overseas trips. How many times do I need to tell you that? I am happy every time you are safe, walking back into the house. He eyes me. Suddenly, his eyes pop open, revealing the box, grabbing out the sneakers, he says, "I love them. I can't wait to show them to Zeke, wear them to PT, but I'm still going to bring you home presents from whatever country I have to travel to with Air Force One. I hate this job, being away from you all the time, the president travels far too much, I hope my next assignment at Langley is better." I grin at him, shaking my head at his craziness, knowing how many people would kill to be in his shoes.
I'm drawn out of the memory feeling lips touching my forehead. Tobias whispers, "I love you, Tris," I smile in return, my mind wondering how my life could have been so much different if Tobias had never moved in next door to me. "Maybe I will go visit Shauna today to see how she is doing?" I whisper sleepily, I hear Tobias reply, "That sounds like fun."
Zeke and Shauna were transferred to Andrews with the same assignment as Tobias from Travis, shortly after Tobias received his orders, and they live three streets over from us. Tobias kisses me goodbye before he leaves for PT, murmuring, "Tris, be ready for one o'clock when I get back. In a nice dress, I have a surprise for you." He grins at me, the smile drops off of my face immediately upon his words. "I hate surprises!" I mutter at him, frowning.
"You will love this one, I promise. Are you going for a run this morning?" He asks, glancing at me. "Yeah," I groan, pouting at his back, he leaves the room, laughing, "Then, you best get a move on." I toss a pillow at his back, missing him, he laughs, shutting the door. My mind drifts to having to call Caleb and Christina to announce our engagement, Tobias better have his running shoes on when I tell Caleb.
My phone lights up as I FaceTime both Christina and Caleb at the same time, my hand with my engagement ring clear as day in front of the phone. Chris answers the call, she screams with excitement, focusing on my hand, "Oh my God, Tris! I can't wait, to put the finishing touches on your wedding dress! You are going to look beautiful in it! He is going to die! How did he ask you?" Caleb smiles happily, he replies, "Congrats, Tris, I'm very happy for you. I knew it was coming eventually. Tobias loves you dearly. Let me know when the wedding is, and I will be sure to be there come hell or high water. There is no way I am missing my sister's wedding, not after almost dying." I laugh, diving into the story of how Tobias proposed. Chris oohs and aahs during the whole story. Caleb smiles the whole time, they both seem generally happy for me, and by the time we end our call, saying our goodbyes to one another, my heart is lifted, and I can't wait to marry Tobias even more than I already do, thanks to Chris and Caleb.
Thoughts? Opinions? What did you think of the chapter? What do you think Tobias's surprise for Tris is? I hope everyone who celebrates Christmas has a great one, and that everyone has a Happy New Year. I will see you all in 2020 with the next update, it will be on the weekend of January 4.
