Chapter One
Evelynn
Evelynn stared at the monumental stone that had burst from the ground, shaking away the soreness in her palm. She'd gotten into Dimhollow Crypt easily enough; destroyed the vampires without so much as a scratch. Highly developed archery skills did not do much in the way of puzzle solving, though. One mistake with the pillars had resulted in a pierced hand which had made her fall to her knees before attempting the bizarre lock again. She'd succeeded in her second endeavor.
Vampires were seeking whatever was in here, that thought alone should make one pause. She'd been ready for a weapon, she'd even been ready for a trap. She had not, however, been ready for the delicate Nord that crumpled from inside the tomb.
The fact that she was a vampire was obvious, if her scent alone didn't give her away, it was her pale skin and dark aura, even in sleep. But Evelynn had never seen one look so… helpless. She stirred from her sleep and all but fell out of the stone.
Reflexively, Evelynn reached out a hand and caught her before she could fall. More than anything, Evelynn wished she'd noticed the Elder Scroll on her back first, as the Dragonborn probably should've. But she was distracted by the Nords' soft expression mixed with her striking features. The woman staggered to find her feet and looked up at Evelynn. The Nords' hands were ice cold; Vampire.
Still shaking off sleep, the woman stammered, asking who sent for her. Clearly Evelynn was not what she was expecting. Evelynn felt compelled to meet her with only honesty. She just looked so… vulnerable.
"A man named Isran," she softly told the vampire.
The vampire considered this, before responding that she didn't know him, asking if he was "like her".
Evelynn tried not to smile. If the woman seemed nervous about her vampirism, Evelynn didn't want to make her feel more uncomfortable, though she didn't know why. She'd joined the Dawnguard to rid the world of the growing vampire plague in Skyrim, not to tiptoe around their feelings. Regardless, she smoothly offered a leading question that the Nord could answer if she chose.
"Are you a…?"
"Vampire, yes."
"Why were you locked away like this?" Evelynn told herself the question was meant to find out why she was important enough to be hidden, but the nagging bother of sealing a woman in a tomb, vampire or not, pulled at her mind.
"That's... complicated. And I'm not totally sure if I can trust you. But if you want to know the whole story, help me get back to my family's home."
Evelynn agreed without hesitation. Why? To learn about the Elder Scroll, of course. But Evelynn knew that was only an afterthought. Truth be told, there was a sadness behind the Nords gold and crimson eyes that compelled Evelynn to help any way she could. Who knew the Dragonborn was so soft?
The women learned each other's names and continued on to find a way out of the cave. Serana. The Dragonborn tasted the name like wine. Sweet and alluring with a gentle burn that hinted at danger.
Evelynn shook off the odd thoughts and found a set of stairs that seemed to be the way out. Still, Evelynn was strangely distracted when the ground cracked and the Gargoyle statue burst to life and charged. Evelynn barely had time to raise her crossbow, she knew the Gargoyle was much too close and would severely injure her through the light studded armor, enchanted or not. Evelynn braced to fire an ill aimed shot at the creature on impact when an ice spike impaled the creature, staggering it backward with a roar. She barely glanced at the vampire behind her before firing the kill shot and crumbling the stone monster. Of course the vampire is a mage.
They were more prepared for the second statue to animate itself and quickly disposed of the Gargoyle. Evelynn dug out the jeweled eyes of the monsters and mumbled a shy thanks to the Nord. The strike wouldn't have killed Evelynn, but the journey north would certainly be uncomfortable while healing.
Finally outside, Evelynn breathed in the cold air deeply. All the raiding she'd already done in caves had done little to ease her claustrophobia. The sun kissed her Imperial skin and Evelynn looked at Serana in the daylight. Being a vampire, it had to be uncomfortable for her to be out in mid-day, but Serana merely pulled up a hood, shadowing her lovely face so only her glowing eyes were really noticeable.
Evelynn conjured her map, planning their route to Solitude. It was going to take days on foot. Evelynn had left her mare at the stables for stealth purposes; she hadn't considered that she'd be bringing another person with her.
"There's not much of a place to rest between here and Solitude. Unless you'd like to backtrack a bit, we could get your bearings and hire a carriage before I take you home."
Serana laughed. It was a pleasant sound, musical almost, even if a bit sardonic. "I've been asleep for longer than either of us can know, but if you have errands to run, I'm not exactly in a hurry to get home." There was the sadness again. Evelynn had to resist the urge to comfort the stranger.
Lakeview Manor was a hike in and of itself, no sense in backtracking that far; Evelynn would just have to wait a while more to see her family; her wife, Camilla, and two children. Perhaps Whiterun was the best stop, although it's a bit of a distance for somewhere Evelynn didn't really want to be. It made the most sense.
"It's so bright out here, I don't know how you stand it." Serana broke her tough facade and inadvertently admitted her weakness to sunlight. Evelynn chuckled but pushed on.
The vampire would be uncomfortable but she'd live. The women were roughly the same height, and surprisingly kept a similar pace, so traveling was productive for the first several hours. Serana explained a little more of her family home. Harkon was the name of her father. Evelynn talked about the Dawnguard, wanting to be transparent with her new travel companion. Serana didn't seem very uncomfortable in the company of a vampire hunter. Maybe Evelynn hadn't emphasized enough on Isran.
The sun was setting as they'd just come off the bottom of the mountain, throwing ethereal shades of purples and pinks across the sky. Serana looking at the sky in peaceful serenity was a sight of beauty and art. Evelynn had appreciated the view of it a little too long and tripped over a broken stone in the path, landing her on her hands and knees in the dirt.
Evelynn cursed herself as her ears burned red. Nice, Dovahkiin, graceful as ever. A hand reached out and grabbed under her arm as Evelynn heard the chuckle. Seranas' hands were warmer than before. Softer. Evelynn righted herself then shook off the extra hand, gritting a thanks through her teeth.
"You're not much of a creature of night are you?" Serana was still smiling at the Imperial.
"I guess not today." Evelynn had had many adventures by moonlight, but she had no desire to try to explain her sudden clumsiness.
Seranas' eyes lingered on her cheeks momentarily before she cleared her throat and shyly stated, " it's almost dark… We've been traveling for over half a day."
"Yes, I think we're covering decent ground. Do you need a rest?"
Serana laughed almost awkwardly. "Ah- not… exactly. I've been asleep for quite a time. And traveling during the day is a bit more taxing on…"
Oh. Oh. "Right. Well-" Evelynn was cut off by the sound of footsteps approaching, a little faster than either of the women were comfortable with.
Seranas' eyes blazed as her magick swirled in her hands. "Where'd you come from?" She hurled an ice spike toward the flash of fur armor.
Evelynn drew her crossbow and aimed, but Serana gently placed a hand on the bow and shyly smiled, pleading. Oh. She lowered her favorite weapon and watched the vampire sprint silently, leading just ahead of the bandit that had run into the trees.
Well… this was better than the Dragonborns original plan. She'd almost eagerly offered her blood to the Nord. What in Oblivion was that? Instead, she watched Serana gracefully catch the blond Nordic man, where he went instantly still.
"Shhh. Be calm. There is no hurry. Have a care where you tread, kind sir, you gave me a fright." Her velvet voice was so sweet that Evelynn relaxed watching the horror that was soon to start.
"Of course, m'lady. My apologies." The slight man sounded genuinely ashamed.
"That's quite alright, please, allow me." She gently pulled on his hand until he was inches from her. She folded the man into a delicate embrace and to anyone else, it must have looked like lovers' affections.
Okay, Evelynn had killed before. She'd even eaten people before. But this was entirely different. The man was not frightened, or angry. He seemed to be only eager for the womans' lips to brush across his throat. He sighed, content. Evelynn listened to the man's heart. Her own heart quickened, watching the… erotic scene before her eyes.
Something stirred inside Evelynn. A warming flutter beginning inside her abdomen. Her breath came in shallow pants and her hands trembled as she wrapped her arms around herself. She could smell the blood and her mouth watered. She could almost taste the flesh. Her skin prickled and she flexed her muscles, inhaling deeply, waiting for the mans last breath.
"Now go home, and do not stalk other ladies in the night. Behave." Serana turned the man loose, alive. Alive?
"Yes, m'lady. Farewell and goodnight."
All sensations happening to the Dragonborn came to a screeching halt and shifted suddenly to high alert. Somehow watching the vampire feed had almost ignited the change. Evelynn had not admitted to being a werewolf, and she was certain that Serana would not tolerate that. Evelynn shook her head violently, clearing the bloodlust from her mind, stifling the wolf again. She attempted to collect herself as the vampire approached her again.
"Let's be on our way." She said shyly.
"Have you fed enough?" Evelynn hoped her voice didn't show her internal struggle.
"I'll manage from here." Serana blushed slightly.
The pair of women began walking again. Silence hung heavy for some time before Evelynn tried to casually make conversation.
"How are you feeling?"
The Nord looked at her leather boots as she walked. "Better, thank you."
"Why…?" Evelynn left the question hanging in the air, unsure how to ask.
"Why did I leave him alive?" She sounded… sad again. Evelynn looked at her and smiled apologetically.
"I didn't think a member of this Dawnguard would much care for me draining a man to death. And-" Serana abruptly stopped talking and snapped her attention forward, her jaw tense.
"And?"
"… I don't want you to think I'm a monster."
Confusion rocked through the Imperials brain, her eyebrows screwed together trying to understand. "Me?"
"People. I don't want people to think I'm a monster." The sadness was gone, but replaced with an odd frustration.
"But… you said me."
"Well yes you. You're the only people around, are you not?" Ice cold.
Evelynn bristled and her sarcasm perked up. "Well I'm pretty sure that blond guy was people. I can go ask what he thinks." She turned on her heel to walk the other way.
"Dammit- Evelynn stop!" Evelynn stopped, her small fire extinguished. It was the first time Serana had said her name. Even angry, the sound of it caressed her ears, warming her chest, flaming her face in a blush that made no sense. Serana grabbed her arm and turned her to again. Face to face. Beautiful face.
"Look, I am sorry. I did mean you. I've been locked away for a very long time, but before that, I never really left my family's island. I did not have… friends. Walking with you today has felt… friendly. I do not wish to upset you." Her Nordic accent was softer, her fiery eyes smoldered. Was this her Vampire Seduction?
Evelynn calmly reached up to brush the vampires raven colored hair from her face, tracing her calloused fingers over the Nords' flawlessly sculpted cheekbones. Infatuated, Evelynn stepped closer for a better look at this face, just watching. And tracing.
Serana
Serana stood frozen stunned, watching this baffling woman caress her face. The warmth of her fingers left trails of electricity on the vampires undead skin. Had humans always been so warm? Serana closed her eyes and absorbed the sensation, a small smile tugging at her mouth. Her shoulders relaxed and she was lost in this simple pleasure she'd never thought to know.
The Imperial woman smelled of the forest; subtle and earthy and warm. Sweet, almost. Seranas' fangs tingled slightly, but not uncomfortably so. Evelynn moved her fingers over the Nords' nose, lips. Across her jawline, sending shivers down Seranas' spine. The vampire exhaled, her head starting to spin. The fragrance intensified and Seranas fangs throbbed. Eyes still closed, entranced, she could barely acknowledge her curiosity before warmth pressed softly to her mouth.
Seranas eyes shot open to see a blur of golden skin and brown hair and long lashes. Close. Much too close. She let out a sharp gasp and pulled away from the ache in her teeth. This strange and kind woman had kissed her. The savior had kissed the damsel. Worse… a Hunter had kissed a Vampire.
Serana had not meant to seduce the woman. It had not even been in her mind when she'd offered her sincere apology. By the Blood, she'd been out of practice for far too long. She averted her eyes and stepped back. The silence in the air had its own pulse.
Evelynn
"I'm- I'm sorry. I don't… I… I'm sorry." Evelynn was horrored. She'd kissed a perfect stranger. A woman in distress. Why? Why? Evelynn screwed her eyes shut and clenched her fist and trembled at her impulsive stupidity.
Evelynn felt delicate fingers under her chin, lifting her head up again. She begrudgingly opened her eyes to face whatever consequences she'd earned.
She'd been met with burning Gold and Crimson eyes. Searching eyes. Searching for what? Neither said anything, only stared. After a few moments, Serana gave a gentle smile and released her.
Some vampire wrath.
Why hadn't Serana been angry? It didn't matter. It would not happen again. Evelynn tightened the ties on her armor and picked up the pace, headed East. Mostly silence accompanied the two for the remainder of the journey. They'd make it to Whiterun by dawn.
Evelynn hadn't the patience for Giants or their gargantuan pets, so she gave them a wide berth as they approached the walk towards Whiteruns stables. There were horses available.
"Do you prefer riding a horse or traveling by carriage?" Evelynn gestured toward the stables.
The sudden question seemed to startle Serana. She looked over at the horses and smiled. "I cannot remember the last time I was on a horse."
Evelynn nodded and continued up the walk. Serana seemed less guarded now, probably the rising sun making her tired. "Do you have two horses?" The vampire inquired.
Evelynn laughed, "I have several horses."
The guards at the gate nodded to Evelynn respectfully as the women approached. Evelynn returned the acknowledgment and led the way inside the city. Evelynn wanted to sell her acquired merchandise, but knew Belathors slimy hide would be several hours before he opened his shop, even though most businesses opened in less than two hours.
"Divines smile on you, friend." Adrianne was walking along the main road. She was an early riser. Evelynn smiled and bowed her head respectfully at the blacksmith.
Evelynn refused to look at her Breezehome while she headed toward the Plains District.
Hulda was pleasant as she ever was, even in the wee hours of the morning. Meeting travelers at all hours was her life. Evelynn smiled warmly at the woman. And asked for two rooms. Only one was available, of course. Evelynn resisted rolling her eyes and handed over a coin purse of gold, more than was necessary.
"And love, two… four bottles of ale if you would be so kind?" Another small coin purse.
Evelynn carried two bottles in each hand and walked back to Serana.
"We should travel by night, so we'll rest here for the day." She offered two bottles to the vampire, who made a face but accepted them nonetheless. "Only one room available, I hope you don't mind."
Evelynn didn't mention that she owned a home in the city. She hadn't returned to that home since Lydia had died.
In their room, Evelynn began stripping off her armor, tossing the pieces into a pile by a wardrobe. In her soft linens, she opened the first bottle and took a long, refreshing gulp. She sat in a chair and let herself begin to relax.
Serana removed the cloak from her shoulders, giving Evelynn a better look at the clothing she wore. It wasn't clothes at all, it was some sort of delicate armor. But fine looking, regal. Evelynn couldn't recall having seen it before. She briefly wondered who had crafted such art.
"Is this going to mess up your sleep schedule?" The Nord asked as she started unfastening the corset style armor. It was… something to watch.
The words reached Evelynns' mind and she snorted a laugh. "Not really, no." Sleep schedule, ha.
Serana removed the rest of her armor while Evelynn drank more of her ale. When Evelynn placed the empty bottle on the table and looked up, she was met with the sight of Serana in her under garments. Evelynn openly stared at the woman. She couldn't see a single mark on her ivory skin. Serana was every bit as delicate as she had originally thought, but now Evelynn could see the tones and shadows of muscle along her shoulders and back. The woman was delicate, but strong too.
The vampire had to be noble; she seemed perfectly comfortable undressing in front of a stranger. She must have been used to servants. Evelynn was appraising her long toned legs when Serana began stripping off her under clothes. Evelynn felt the flames of red in her ears and neck as she averted her eyes to give some semblance of privacy.
Evelynn, instead of gawking, opened her second bottle and drank. She made herself fascinated with the wood grain in the table, waiting for the warm fuzzy feeling in her brain. The sound of water pouring drifted over, accompanied with the smell of lavender oil; Serana was bathing, not a bad idea for the Imperial to clean up as well. Afterward.
"I poured some clean water for you, if you'd like." Serana said softly.
Evelynn looked up at the vampire. She looked refreshed and wore a delicate nightdress she'd found in the wardrobe. Her ebony hair was unbraided, and combed through, looking soft and feathery around her face. Her dark collar contrasted artistically with her exposed shoulders. Why did she have to look so feminine, even to sleep?
"Thank you," then Evelynn thought more, looking at the single room, "uh…"
"Don't worry, I won't look." Serana had a warm girly smile on her lips. How does an undead look so… alive?
"Thanks," Evelynn exhaled in relief. She went over to the washbasin.
Standing completely bare in the same room made Evelynn feel highly self conscious, even if the Nord had promised not to look. She'd probably only see tan lines and a few scars if she did; Evelynn had battled hard in her life, and her body told the tales. She dipped the rag into the basin. Warm? The water was almost scalding hot and it felt amazing.
"How did…?"
Serana laughed and Evelynn could almost hear her roll her eyes.
"Ah." Mages.
"I thought you'd appreciate not bathing cold."
"Thanks." Oddly thoughtful. Evelynns' cheeks flushed.
The heated water felt soothing on Evelynns' muscles. She hadn't even realized she was sore. She couldn't remember ever bathing in hot water. Magicka had never been of much interest to her, probably because she was terrible at it. Enchanting was a fine skill for her, but conjuring spells at will was entirely different. Outside of her dragon blood, Evelynn had never bonded with internal magicks.
Cleaned and dry, except for her still wet hair, which she'd scrubbed thoroughly, Evelynn put on a fresh blacksmith's shirt that hung almost to her knees.
"There are spare furs, I'll make a bed over here in this corner." Evelynn rarely slept, but didn't feel like explaining that to the vampire; werewolf blood made it impossible to feel rested, no matter how much one slept.
"Why?" Serana furrowed her brows.
"So you can have the bed, my lady." Evelynn bowed with exaggeration at the noble woman.
"It's a double bed. Just get in and sleep." Actually seeing Serana roll her eyes was surprisingly adorable on her wise looking features.
Evelynn hesitated, and noticed both untouched bottles of ale. "Not much of a drinker, eh?"
Serana blushed slightly at the accidental pun. "No, not really."
Well. No sense in wasting it. Evelynn reached for a bottle questioningly.
"Go ahead."
The Dragonborn opened the bottle and drank deeply. Three drinks in was doing well to brace her nerves. She climbed only the bed, sitting against the headboard. "Is there anything you do like drinking?"
Serana flushed red nervously.
"Alcohol," Evelynn winced at her thoughtless words.
"Wine. Occasionally."
Why had Evelynn asked that? They'd be in solitude by next dawn. What Serana did and did not drink wouldn't matter.
"How did you get this one?" Serana traced her cool fingers over a deeper scar on Evelynns' thigh.
Evelynn pulled away carefully, her stomach fluttering. She pulled the sheets over herself. "Cave bear."
Serana looked embarrassed having touched her. "Do you have many?"
"A few." Evelynn nodded, acknowledging that the Nord had made good on her promise to not look.
"Myself, as well."
Evelynn hadn't remembered seeing any, but didn't want to admit that she had looked, so she just nodded. "Let's get some rest, we'll start our travels again at dusk."
"Goodnight, Evelynn." Another ripple of excitement tore through the Imperial at the sound of her name.
"Rest well, Serana."
Serana
The smell of the forest invaded Seranas senses. She looked around at the thick trees and could see the moss and various mushrooms. She breathed in deeply. It was much different than the icy salt fragrance of her family's island; although not dissimilar to her mother's garden. The garden had a more floral smell, however, and there were no flowers here. Odd.
The snarl of a wolf caused Serana to whip around defensively. Evelynn shot down both wolves before Serana could throw a single ice spike and grinned up at her. Serana smiled back. She felt… safer. Here. With the strange Imperial.
Evelynn took Seranas hand and began walking. Serana didn't know where they were going, but she felt confident that she'd follow this woman anywhere. Her hand felt so warm and strong around Seranas cool fingers. Warmth spread through the Immortals chest.
The waterfall was beyond breathtaking. The smell of sun-kissed lavender hinted in the forest. Serana laced her fingers through the Imperials and they smiled at each other.
Twilight was dimming to dusk, and Evelynn sang. The song sounded familiar, but Serana couldn't quite place it. The Imperial had the most beautiful voice that Serana had ever heard; a heartfelt blend of happiness and sadness.
Serana stepped closer to her, watching her sing; she didn't stop. Thrills flooded through Seranas chest, staring into those stunning silver eyes and listening to that lovely voice. She traced her fingers over Evelynns' face, feeling the smooth, tanned skin, lingering on the small scar just above her right brow. Evelynn just kept singing.
Serana ran her thumb lightly over the mortals lower lip. She closed her eyes and felt that mouth move softly with the song against her fingers. That mouth. The mouth that had kissed her so unexpectedly. Seranas' own lips tingled at the memory of that accidental, chaste kiss. Soft. Sweet.
Evelynn had apologized. Those under her influence did not apologize unless instructed to. She had not used her seduction. Evelynn had wanted to kiss her.
By the Blood, what hurts?
Joy. Serana truly felt a spark of pure joy. It warred with the darkness of her creation. It was both intoxicating and excruciating. Her head began spinning. She knew nothing, could grasp nothing. It was as if she was falling fast with nowhere to land.
Goddess, help me please.
Seranas hands quickly fastened to the back of the Imperials neck, and she pressed her mouth to hers, effectively ending the song. It was as if the sun burst through the seam of the kiss; blinding bright, so much heat. Serana remembered the last time she'd watched the sunrise without discomfort, she'd just been a girl- barely eighteen. Evelynn wrapped her arms around Seranas waist, strong, yet so gentle. All pain was gone, and there were only the two souls dancing together in this magickal place.
Thunder crashed in the nightfall and lightning carved the night out of the sky long enough for Serana to see Evelynn, snatched away abruptly into the nothingness. Confusion and terror rocked through Seranas body.
"No!"
She was answered with only laughter; deep, dark, sadistic laughter. Glowing eyes mocked her from the sky. Another flash of lightning shined off of his gruesome horns and Serana fell to her knees and openly wept in despair.
Serana burst from the bed, shaking in fear and desolation. She saw the Imperial woman, sitting up, staring at Serana on the floor, looking terrified and lost. The Immortal opened her mouth, but there were no words. Only anguish spilled out; tears that burned her eyes flowed down her cheeks and a feral scream ripped through her teeth. She could not stop shaking. She'd not seen Molag Bal in thousands of years, and he'd chosen now to torture her once more.
Evelynn
Evelynn had not been really sleeping; she'd heard Seranas' sounds while she slept. She'd sounded peaceful, blissfully lost in whatever she was dreaming about. Once, she'd reached out and attempted to wrap her arm around Evelynns' waist, but Evelynn simply gave her her pillow to hold instead. It was not even mid-day yet, but Evelynn could think of nothing except the Nord next to her. She could not plan her day, or remember what she was supposed to be doing for the Dawnguard.
Instead, she'd watched Serana sleep. She swayed, but never really rolled over. It was almost like she was dancing. The corners of her lips twitched into intimate smiles that the Imperial felt almost ashamed to witness; they seemed so… private. A soft moan came from her slightly opened mouth and Evelynn froze. Her heart hammered inside her chest, sounding like the Skyforge. Slowly, Evelynn reached her hand forward, wanting so badly to touch that statuesque face. She'd just felt the coolness of Seranas breath on her fingertips when the woman screamed.
"No!"
Evelynn jerked upright, watching the writhing woman. What could she do? She needed to save her. Before she could form a thought of action, the Nord lunged and landed hard on the wooden floor. All Evelynn could do was watch as Seranas eyes found hers, her golden irises somehow frozen in fire, while she wept. Hard. Serana opened her mouth, as if looking for words, and all that came was a scream so painful that it made Evelynns' skin prickle and boiled her blood.
She jumped to the floor, scooping up the broken woman and cradling her to her chest. "Shhh. It's alright Love. You're not alone. I am here." Evelynn whispered into her hair and caressed her head while she rocked them both on the floor.
"Do not touch me." Seranas voice had turned ice cold, tears and screams snuffed out like a candle.
Immediately, Evelynn jumped back arms length from the vampire as though she'd been shocked. She watched carefully for something, anything, to assure her that this was going to be okay. She'd lived through nightmares, seen them in her children, but she'd never witnessed a soul shatter this way.
Serana sat on the floor, with her arms wrapped tightly around her shins, hugging her knees to her chest. Her eyes were closed as she breathed slowly and deeply. Evelynn didn't know what to do or say, so she just sat near the woman and waited.
One hundred and seventeen breaths later, Serana spoke calmly as ever. "I'm sorry if I woke you, please go back to sleep." As if she had simply let extra light into the room.
Evelynn just stared. Countless thoughts flashed through her head, but none of them words.
"Go. Get some rest. I'll smooth things over with the other guests. I'm sure they have questions."
I have questions!
Evelynn did not move- could not move. Serana got up and left the room. Evelynn had wanted to stop her, but the words "Do not touch me" had stilled the very thought.
Serana returned forty-three breaths later, carrying a bottle of wine, and two goblets. Evelynn could feel nothing. Helplessness had driven her numb. Serana sat at the table and poured the wine into each goblet, gesturing to the chair opposite her, but Evelynn couldn't seem to respond. She just continued to sit on the floor.
Serana sighed, and set the second glass on the floor in front of Evelynn while she sipped her own. "It's to help you sleep."
The Nord looked so elegant, sitting tall in her chair, sipping the dark red wine from a finely carved glass. Even in a borrowed nightdress she looked regal. Did that even just happen? Evelynn couldn't have imagined it. But the broken girl who'd just been here could not possibly be this same woman.
"Drink," Serana ordered softly.
Evelynn picked up the cup and took a deep drink. Something briefly flashed in the Nords eyes, but dissipated quickly. She'd never been much of a wine drinker, she'd hated the too sweet taste. This was different. Bitter enough to balance the sweet, but not so much to dry out Evelynns' mouth. In fact, it made her mouth water. She drank more, as if suddenly famished. Something vaguely familiar about the taste begged for more. The glass was empty too quickly.
She looked up at Serana, who'd been watching her with an almost heated expression. "I suppose one should sip that more slowly to appreciate it," she simply stated.
"Right. I'm sorry." Evelynn put the cup down on the floor, sad that it was gone.
"Would you like another?" Serana had leaned down close to Evelynns' face, holding out the bottle.
"Yes, please." Evelynns' voice was soft, pleading. For wine?
Seranas' lips turned up in a secret smirk as she poured the refill. Her eyes were smoldering warm again. She straightened up in her chair, crossed her bare legs, and sipped. Evelynn was staring at the angelic figure before her. Evelynn shifted a little on the floor and drank.
"Why don't you sit on the bed? It would be more comfortable." Serana suggested.
Evelynn did not want to be back in that bed, but the floor was making her legs numb. She opted for the other chair instead. Serana looked at her questioningly.
"You should sleep more, the day is still relatively early."
"Are you going to sleep more?" Evelynns voice surprised her, why did she sound so calm? The wine must be very strong.
Serana looked to be considering this seriously, "not for a while, no."
"Then I'm staying up as well." Evelynn drank the rest of her second glass. Divines, this was good.
Serana stared into Evelynns' eyes. Evelynn could almost feel their gold and silver irises swirling together, as she did not shy away from the piercing gaze. Her head began to spin. Serana reached and gently placed her hand over the Imperials. So soft.
"Go to sleep." Serana seemed persistent.
"No, thank you."
Frustration flashed across Seranas' face and she withdrew her hand, letting out an exasperated sigh. "Well, if we aren't sleeping, we may as well be going."
"That seems productive. Okay, let's go."
Within the half hour, they were armored up and ready to begin. Evelynn sold her spare items to Belathor, and on they went to the stables.
"Which ones are yours?" Serana looked at the dark horses. She seemed girlish again. Almost happy.
"Which one do you like?"
"I don't understand." Serana furrowed her brows, but giggled when a taller mare nuzzled her ear. Serana smiled at the animal and caressed its nose.
Evelynn smiled. She didn't want to push about what happened in the inn, and Serana seemed happy. Instead, she just paid the stable master twenty-five hundred gold pieces for the animals and tip. He had always been kind about her need to rescue every horse.
Seranas mouth dropped at the transaction. "I thought you said you have several horses?"
"I do." Evelynn began saddling up the large mare for Serana.
"And yet you are purchasing horses today. It's too much." She looked displeased.
Evelynn had to laugh. "It's not. Don't worry about it. She likes you, I couldn't break her heart."
Serana blushed slightly and stroked the mares thick neck. "Dawn," she whispered.
A colt came to sniff Evelynns' neck, moving his soft lips playfully at her hair. She laughed and guessed this one was to be hers.
"How old is he, sir?" Evelynn asked Skulvar.
"Just over three years, Thane. He is energetic and fiercely opinionated. I wouldn't recommend him for travels, Lass."
Evelynn smiled and rolled her eyes. The Nord should know better by now. Evelynn began saddling up the bouncy beast, laughing at his excitement. Poor boy just wanted to go on adventures.
He was two hands shorter than Seranas mare, but wide with muscle. He'd make a fine workhorse once the farm was finished. For now, Evelynn was excited to show him other parts of their world.
Taking her cue from Serana, she named him Dusk, which went well with his coloring. He wasn't the midnight black of most whiterun horses, but he didn't look murky either. His coat was a shining, deep grey, with a reddish gleam.
They loaded up, thanked Skulvar Sable-Hilt, and started North. The afternoon was warmer than usual in Skyrim, the sun shining brightly on them. Evelynn was grateful that her studded armor had no sleeves. Usually, she preferred sleeveless for mobility purposes, but she would've been miserable in this warmth if she'd been more covered. With the breeze, however, the world felt divine. She sent thanks to Kynareth, fist over heart.
"Don't you get hot?" She asked Serana, who, once again, was completely concealed from the sun under her hooded cloak and long sleeved armor.
"Not in the way that you would," she answered.
Evelynn didn't know why that turned her ears red.
"So. Thane." Serana mused.
"... Aye…" Evelynn hadn't ever used her title, nor had she ever needed to inform anyone of it. There had been a feast, a party. The Jarl informed all of Whiterun of his new Thane. Evelynn realized she'd not brought any outsiders to Whiterun since her family, and they'd attended the celebration with her.
"Well, My Thane, do you still wish to stop in Solitude?"
Evelynn winced. "Just Evelynn, please. I'm not sure how much farther your island is than Solitude. Do you have qualms about returning home if it should be daylight?"
"I have no qualms." Evelynn wasn't sure what else she heard within the words, but she did not ask.
The good weather did not last long. Within a few hours, they'd run into grey skies and snow. Thankfully, Evelynns' blood kept her warm enough to continue. Of course Serana wouldn't be cold; not only was she a vampire, but she was a Nord. Evelynn realized that it had been quite a while since she'd even acknowledged Seranas' vampirism. She'd seemed so… human.
Dusk bounced and huffed a bit as they walked, eager to really move. Dawn didn't seem bothered by the slower pace, she pranced gracefully along with her head high.
"Do you want to speed up? He seems impatient. Maybe he didn't get much exercise at the stables."
Serana stroked the mares mane, as if asking her permission, then lightly kicked her heels and the mare lurched forward into a motivated canter.
Evelynn grinned and gave Dusk the go ahead to follow suit. He leaped forward into a sprint. Evelynn had to hold the horn of the saddle to keep firmly seated. She could feel his muscles bulge and flex with exertion and it made her own thighs tense as if it were her running. Maybe if he wasn't skittish, she could race him as a wolf sometime.
The colt easily caught up with the dark beauties ahead, and the race progressed. Dawn had the length and coordination for speed, but Dusk had pure strength and determination to win. They remained neck and neck for almost two leagues and Evelynn worried about their fatigue. She pulled her colt to a slow walk and ignored his huffing in protest. Serana slowed and circled back, with a smile on her face. though the smile didn't touch her eyes, she appeared content.
"Can your child not keep up?" She challenged.
Evelynn smiled at the playful banter, such stark contrast from just a few hours ago. She simply pointed at the small creek just up to the west. They led the horses for a drink and dismounted, shaking the tingling numbness from their legs. If the horses kept up this motivation, they just might make it to this island before dawn. The sun was beginning to set now, but the light snow turned into a steady drizzle.
"This must be that beautiful Skyrim weather I've always heard about." Serana sounded annoyed, it made Evelynn laugh.
Evelynn washed her hands in the stream and began whistling, without putting much thought into it. The Song-Bearer had gotten Evelynns favorite song stuck in her head again; she'd played it at the Inn as Serana had slept. By the Nine, Evelynn wished Agne had accepted her offer to play in her home. She'd declined, but she'd attempted to talk her way into Evelynns' bed as compensation. Bards.
"What is that?" Serena sounded odd. She couldn't tell if she was angry or afraid.
"Sorry, I'll stop."
"What is it?" The vampire pressed, closing in on Evelynn almost aggressively.
Evelynn put her hands up to show no harm. "The Wolves of Jorrvaskr."
"I do not wish to hear it again." Cold words like frozen daggers.
"Of course. I'm sorry." Evelynn had gotten used to Whiterun citizens brushing off the song as rumors, folklore, and exaggerated entertainment. Of course a vampire would hate a song about the werewolves. Evelynn cursed herself internally.
Seranas' lip trembled once before she snapped her mouth shut and went back to her horse. Knowing it was time to move again, Evelynn went to Dusk and massaged his strong shoulders preparing to mount him again.
A prehistoric screech shook the ground around them.
Evelynn drew her crossbow "By the Nine, what bloody shite is this now?" She fired a flaming steel bolt into the Blood Dragons' chest.
Serena said nothing, but jumped into action, sending an ice spike at the creature. It landed and charged the vampire, snapping its jaws and roaring fiercely.
Without thinking. Evelynn sprinted and opened her throat. "Yol Toor Shul!" Her dragon voice rang out, searing the beast with the flames of the sun. It shrieked and flew into the air
Evelynn dipped her bolt in a weakness to fire poison and shot again, barely clipping its thigh, but enough for the poison to disperse through its system. It flew directly at Evelynn, consumed by bloodlust. She cranked the crossbow and reloaded, firing again, this time impaling the Dragons' throat. Fire cascaded down at them. Evelynn pushed Serana out of the way and felt her skin boil under her light armor, her right arm catching new scars, no doubt. The beast fell to the ground, quaking the earth at her feet.
Here goes. Evelynn winced at the coming discomfort. As the Dragons' last flames seared its flesh and scales from its body, treasures dropped to the grass and released its potent soul. She braced herself as her greedy dragon blood devoured the thick essence and swirled it into her body. By the Nine, it never gets easier.
Her vision blurred to black in the night and she staggered with dizziness. She breathed deeply, willing her body to collect itself again. The new soul heated her immensely, taking away some of the sting in her bare arm and completely clearing her armored skin. Dragon fire was magickal beyond comprehension. Evelynn flexed her arms, most definitely there would be a scar, but not a very deep one.
Figures began reappearing in the darkness until she saw glowing eyes on her in wonder. Evelynn smiled shyly and shrugged.
"Dragons? They've returned?"
"Yes. I am still on the main hunt for Alduin, although I might owe him a thanks for saving my life."
"And you're… taking the time to return me to my home?" Serana sounded strangely emotional.
Evelynn shrugged. "There are more dangers in the world than just Alduin. I'm trying to rectify them as they come."
"You have a good heart, Evelynn. This world never deserved you."
"Perhaps. But it might need me."
Serana
The tremors beneath Seranas feet were of little concern, compared to the horrific sound from above. She abandoned all ill thoughts of that foreboding song and only thought of survival. She crouched, magick in hand.
"By the Nines, what bloody shite is this now?" The Imperial sounded serious, focused, but not afraid. Her accent stronger, and more musical than it had been in the two days they'd known each other.
The Imperial fired an arrow from her strange weapon and a burst of flame struck the silver scales on the dragons' torso, causing it to scream again. Dragons? Serana threw ice into its ribs as it claimed ground. The beast was angered at this and charged Serana, she knew she'd surely be eaten.
Instantly the Imperial was between the dragon and Serana, a wave of sound echoed from her mouth. Serana could not understand the language, and a brilliant hellfire tore through her throat and engulfed the dragon. A shout… Serana watched, amazed, as this small woman sent the dragon into the air again.
Evelynn poisoned another of her strange arrows and fired it at the monster, which turned its aggression toward her again. Evelynn sent the kill strike into its neck, causing it to promptly collapse to the ground, spewing flames at the two of them as it descended.
Serana hadn't the time to think, nor react. Evelynn pushed the vampire to the ground and took the brunt of the fire, covering her head with her right arm. Serana could smell the burning forest of the Imperials flesh.
By the time she stood, the body of the dragon burst into flames, sending into the sky a cloud of ash and sparks. It seemed as if all the air in the land rushed to the pyre, swirling, and sending out a magickal energy that chilled even a vampire. She looked to the Imperial.
Evelynn stood tall, strong, expectant. Serana watched the woman gasp sharply as her stray hairs whipped around her face. She bent forward slightly and groaned as the force hit her. Evelynn… glowed. After a few breaths, Evelynn smiled weekly.
"Dragons? They've returned?" Serana knew they'd gone extinct before even she was born, thousands of years ago.
"Yes. I am still on the main hunt for Alduin, although I might owe him a thanks for saving my life." Her accent was still strong, ringing softly in Seranas ears.
"And… you're taking the time to return me to my home?" Feelings warred inside Serana. She may have been a vampire for thousands of years, but she'd been born a Nord. She'd been taught the histories as a girl. This woman was hunting the World-Eater; meant to stop him from another terrible reign. And yet she'd agreed to run mere errands for a stranger. Dovahkiin. Tending to a Daughter of Coldharbour.
Evelynn shrugged. "There are more dangers in the world than just Alduin. I'm trying to rectify them as they come."
Warmth flooded Seranas' chest. The sun that shined in the Imperials soul chased away the blackness that existed in Seranas' very breath. "You have a good heart, Evelynn. This world never deserved you."
"Perhaps. But it might need me."
Serana let go of every thought and hesitation and doubt she'd ever had. She grabbed the Imperials face and crushed her lips to hers. The sun burned in the night. Head spinning, Serana parted her lips and tasted love. She may never be able to have love, but just this once, she would taste it and know it and not be afraid. Molag Bal be damned. Serana would burn an eternity to know this kiss.
Evelynn
Evelynn gasped at the force behind the kiss. Seranas mouth was warm, hot. Evelynn couldn't remember why she shouldn't do this, or even what her own name was. She wrapped her arms around the Nords waist, clutching her closer, desperately. Seranas tongue caressed the Imperials lower lip and Evelynn opened her mouth, granting her deeper access. The vampire accepted the offer, exploring, tasting. Evelynn moaned into her mouth, her body squirming.
Serana fisted her hands in the imperials hair, licking her tongue slowly. Evelynn wanted more. Her back twitched and shivered as fur threatened to burst through her skin. She slid her own tongue into Seranas' seductive mouth. She felt the sharp point of fangs and her head spun into Oblivion.
Licking the piercing edges gashed open her tongue. Serana pulled hard on her hair, sucking. Drinking. Drinking her blood.
Evelynn grasped Seranas' shoulders for stability and let the woman lick and suck and drink as much as she could.
Oh by the Nine, don't stop. Please!
Serana moved a hand to Evelynns throat and squeezed, forcing the pressure of blood to build as she drank. Evelynn pressed her hips hard into the vampire and begged her to take everything. A few sprouts of dark fur creeped through the Imperials spine and she gave in. She did not expect the… change that actually occurred.
Evelynns body exploded and she cried out helplessly as climax slammed through her. Serana moaned and held her, drinking, as wave after wave washed through her. Until she buckled and collapsed to the damp ground.
She'd been with a woman before. Her wife, once. It had been pleasant, but neither of them were interested in trying again. Camilla wanted a home, children, stability. She loved Evelynn, though it was definitely more platonic. Evelynn had simply wanted a family, someone to come home to, to look after her children. She'd adored Camilla, she'd been kind to Evelynn since the beginning. She'd never regretted marrying a friend.
She'd even been with a man before. Farkas had been patient and kind to her the moment she'd joined the Companions. He'd been there for her initiation. He was still a great friend to her.
But neither of these joinings had ever ended in this feeling of total satisfaction and completion. Evelynn trembled hard on her hands and knees in the dirt. The rain was picking up harder and she didn't even care. She'd happily drown in this euphoria.
Serana crouched down to look her in the eye. Evelynn didn't think to be embarrassed, it was called Vampire Seduction for a reason. She smiled sleepily at the beautiful Nord. Serana smiled sweetly, once, a brief look of adoration in her eye.
Seranas voice caressed her words like wine, "I can only give you the one, Dovahkiin. I'm glad you seem to have enjoyed it." Evelynn could still smell the blood in her mouth. Almost sweet.
