Owl House Season 1 Episode 7 – Lost in Language
It was another calm day in the Owl House. No danger, no running from the guards, and no magic training...again. To pass time Luke is reading from The Witch-Warrior Azure Volume 5 to King.
Luke: "Azure," Hecate began. "Our paths have crossed only in battle. But today I stand before you seeking an ally." Man, I wish I had the power to make friends out of my rivals. At least the honourable kind.
King: Rivals are meant to be annihilated, not befriended. Anyway, keep reading. I've been sucked into your awful fandom.
Luke: Okay. "Suddenly the door swung open."
Hooty: Hooty swings the door open. Ding-dong. Ding. Hoot! Hoot!
King: The book has come to life! Burn it!
Luke goes to the door and finds a basket.
Scenes shift to the kitchen where Eda is and Luke places the basket on a table.
Luke: Eda, you got a package. It looks like a gift basket.
Eda: Probably an offering. Ah! Being the most powerful witch in the Boiling Isles has its perks.
King, a bib now tied on, pulls a blanket off the top of the basket, revealing a snoring baby.
King: Mm. Fresh meat.
Luke slaps the back of King's head, earning him a glare.
Luke: Absolutely not. There will be none of that here.
Eda: Witches eating babies is so 1693. What is this?
King: There's a note. He grabs the note. "Take care of my child till morning. Yi Yi."
Eda: Nope. Babies are awful. Not happening.
King: "You will be handsomely rewarded. X-O-X-O-X-O-X. Bat Queen."
Eda: Bat Queen? King pulls a few snails out of the basket. Eda's eyes widen. Reward?
Luke: Who's the Bat Queen?
Eda: She's the wealthiest demon on the Boiling Isles. Get in with her and you're set for life. She takes a snail. So, we keep this thing alive for a few hours and we get paid. Pfft. Easy.
Luke: Sweet! I've got some experience handling babies so I'm sure I'll be able to help baby sit.
Eda: Not you. You have to return the books I checked out from the library.
Eda summons a pile of books, which Luke catches, barely keeping his balance.
Luke: Aw, come on! That's so unfair! Why can't I help with the babies!? These aren't even my books!
Eda: Because life isn't fair, now go. Left with no choice, Luke takes his leave. I don't want him getting a cut of the loot.
King: Good thinking.
Luke: I heard that!
Eda: Now, let's take a look at this little darling.
Eda fully took the blanket off, revealing the baby had the head of a human, but the wings and legs of a bat. The baby bat suddenly started screeching, causing the entire house to shake. Eda covers her ears and King falls on his back.
King: Oh, boy.
Eda: On second thought, maybe we could use your help!
Luke: Sorry, teach. You're on your own. I gotta get to the library, bye!
Eda: The baby bat continues screeching. We got this, right?
The baby bat flies out of the basket and into Eda's face, making her fall on her back. King could tell this was going to be a long day.
Owl House Intro Music
As the portal gate opens and the camera zooms in on it. Luke opens his eyes to see his falling down, causing him to freak out before something zoomed past and caught him. Luke saw he was saved by Eda along with King, who smirked at the human boy as they flew to her house on her Palisman staff with Luke raising his fist in excitement.
The door where Hooty was opened as Luke steps outside now wearing goggles, twirling his Rebellion sword and struck a pose, aiming his Glyph Gun at the screen. Eda came out with her staff, sharing a grin with Luke. King popped up in front of them in a pose.
A Boiling Isle mural appears, three windows flipping to briefly reveal Gus, Willow, and Amity striking their own poses before burning away to show King commanding an army of stuffed toys, which all fall on him.
Luke rode on Eda's staff like a surfboard, zooming past Bonesborough, flying past Tinella Nosa, sharing a high-five with Gus, Willow being beside him with a plan releasing vines and evading guards that chase him down. Eda and King join in on the fun and they have blast taking to the skies…until they hang on for dear life as a massive monstrous worm-like monster, mouth wide open, lunges at them as they scream in horror.
Then the scene changes back to the Owl House, where it's night-time, and stars twinkle in the sky as the trio are on the roof and looking up into the sky, Eda holding her staff beside her, Luke holding Rebellion downward and King riding his shoulder. Luke opens a hand, sending a ball of light floating into the sky where it bursts to release a blinding flash.
The title card appears:
Owl House
In the streets of Bonesborough, where Luke is struggling to walk with his load. He runs into Tiny Nose carrying a book as big as Luke.
Luke: Yo! Tiny Nose, do you know where I can find the library?
Tiny Nose: Oh yeah, it's right over there.
Tiny Nose points across the street. Luke looked and saw that he was closer to it than he originally thought. The library was right across the street from him. It was a pretty impressive sight, being much larger than his old library and much more majestic.
Luke: Whoa! Thanks for the direction. See you around.
Tiny Nose: Luke leaves. See you, Luke.
Luke walked up the stairs of the library, before entering its halls while taking in all that there was to see. Torches decorated the walls; stained glass windows brightened the corridors as readers and patrons went about their business. It wasn't anything he hasn't read or seen in the Harry Potter movies, but it was just as amazing to see.
Luke: Now this is a library.
His book pile glowed green and began floating out of his arms towards a wizard with a bored expression on his face. Each book flew through a green spell circle, which turned red with the word "Late" appearing above it as they disappeared with a beep.
Librarian: Late. Late. He grabs the last book as Luke walks to the desk. Coffee, grass and bloodstains? These are Eda's, aren't they?
Luke: Yeah, sorry about that. Last night was crazy. You don't want to know.
Librarian: I'm sure I don't. I'll put them on her tab. He summons a scroll and writes on it. By the way, we're closing early for the Wailing Star meteor shower.
The librarian pointed behind him to a framed picture of the Wailing Star. The picture showed a blue star with a sad face on it falling from the night sky.
Luke: What's that?
Librarian: You're in a library. Read a book.
His scroll rolls up and disappears.
Luke: Gee, no need to be a jerk about it. But, meh, since I'm here, what the heck.
He walked around the corner and looked up at a banner reading "Demon Decimal System. DO NOT FEED." Luke looked at and saw a Dewey Decimal System, but each card catalogue had the face of a growling monster. He bent down in front of them before a mischievous smirk crossed his face. Pulling out a gumball, the young boy feeds it to one of the DDS monsters. It gladly chewed on for a few seconds before barfing up a tone of notecards on him. Luke laughed as he fell down onto the floor with a smile.
Scenes shift to a study area, where several Hexside students are reading. Luke is amazed to see dozens of books flying around.
Luke: Cool! He jumps, planting his foot on two books and riding them. Woo-hoo!
People: Shh!
Luke: Sorry!
Scenes shift to the reference section, where witches are watching things on crystal balls. One is watching a "HOW TO FLY" video, another is watching a piano cat parody, and a third is stuck on a loading screen, dial-up internet noises emitting from it. The last witch slaps the crystal ball a few times. Luke walks past them, amazed with everything he's seeing.
Luke: This place is awesome!
Amity: 'What do you think you're doing?'
Luke: Luke panics, turning and holding up his hands. Nothing! I swear! I'm innocent!
He heard the sound of kids laughing before seeing that it was the kids' area.
Luke: Wait? I know that voice. And is that the sound of kid's giggling.
He hides behind a shelf to get a closer look and to his utter shock and surprise, the voice from before belonged to Amity Blight. The same girl that bullied Willow, tried to have Luke dissected, and formed a rivalry with at the covention. That same Amity was reading to a group of baby-class students from Hexside. And she does so with a kind and genuine smile, no hint of arrogance or smugness. Luke admits, she looks quite pretty with that smile.
Amity: "We're your friends and we wanna help," said the Tin Boy with a yelp. Otabin smiled and paced the floor. "I've never had real friends before."
Luke: Amity reading to kids? And is she smiling? Like, kindly smiling?
Luke sneaks into the kid's corner, hiding behind a small shelf and watching the green-haired witch read.
Amity: "Then we'll be your first," the Chicken Witch clucked. Otabin couldn't believe his luck. So, Bookmaker Otabin surrounded by friends, bound a book of friendship and that's the end.
She closes the book and receives applause from the kids. Luke whistles surprised and impressed.
Luke: Whoa. Amity can smile. And she loves little kids. Something's telling me she uses the bully routine to cover up her hidden kindness. Luke stares Amity's kind, pretty smile. Something that draws him in. I don't know why, but I feel the desire to end our little rivalry and become friends with her like Azure did with Hecate in Volume 5.
Amity escorts the kids out and they take their leave. Luke quickly grabs a manga book.
Luke: Whoa! Boiling Isles manga! Cool!
He drops down and pretends to read it.
Kid #1: Thank you so much.
Kid #2: Good‐bye.
Braxas: A demon kid named Braxas hugs Amity's leg. Goodbye, Miss Amity. Thank you.
Amity: She pats his head. Thank you, Braxas. See you next time.
Amity watches him runs off. She quickly looks to the side, then does a double take at Luke hiding behind a book. When he notices he nervously reveals himself and Amity's normal attitude returns from the sight of her rival.
Luke: Uh…hey, how you doing?
Amity: Ugh! You!
Luke stood up since he's been caught anyway.
Luke: Amity… Reading to kids, I see. He leans his elbow on the shelf only to make a book fall. Now that's a surprise. I never would've pegged you as someone who loves kids. Looks like the sourpuss has a hidden sweet centre.
Amity: It's for extra credit. She picks up the book Luke dropped. Don't get your leggings in a bunch.
Amity walks back inside and Luke follows.
Luke: No, no, I'm not making fun of you. I think it's pretty cool that you like kids and take time to read to them. You know, I used to do the same thing back home. I'd volunteer to read books to kids, and they loved me for it. It was pretty fun. Maybe, we could team up reading to the kids. I can do voices. He does a robot voice. I have the best monster voice. Okay, I admit, that sounds more like a robot, but still-
Amity slams her pile of books on a table, having grown annoyed.
Amity: Human! She faces Luke. Do you see me going to the Owl Shack and bugging you while you…fry up owls?
Luke: Uh…1, it's called the Owl House and 2, we don't fry up owls there. And 3, for the sake of Owlbert and, a lesser extent, Hooty, we're not going to try.
Amity: Well, whatever, I don't really know what you do there, but every time you come near me, I get in trouble.
Luke: Oh, come on! I thought I made it clear that I don't do any of that to you on purpose! I'm just trying to be your friend.
Amity: Well, I don't want to be your friend! Nor do I need any! Just leave me alone!
Luke: Okay, okay! I'm sorry! I can take a hint. I'm gone!
Luke walks away, not noticing Amity feeling a little guilt over what she said starts to raise her hand to stop him but doesn't.
Luke has is hands in his coat pockets.
Luke: He sighs. Well, so much for befriending the enemy.
Edric: You gonna let her get to you like that?
Luke turns his head to see two teens two years older looking at him. They were a girl and a boy, but judging by their similarities in appearance, they were likely twins. Both of them had dark sea-green hair, golden eyes, and pale skin with a mole under one of their eyes and black eyebrows. They were also wearing the 'Illusion track' school uniform, just like Gus. The boy, who was leaning against a bookcase, had short hair. His sister on the other hand had longer hair that was tied in a bulky plait, which was darker at the bottom. These were Amity's older siblings, Edric and Emira.
Both are smiling at Luke and the boy was holding a back with a rabit face.
Luke: Who are you?
Edric: Well-wishers on a mission.
Emira: A noble quest.
Edric: Watch this. Hey, Mittens.
With her back turned Amity blushed like crazy with anger and embarrassment upon getting called by that name. Luke did his best to hold back a snicker as Edric held up the lunch bag.
Edric: Mom says stop forgetting your lunch. And stop being a jerk to your friend.
Amity: Amity walks over and snatches the bag. He is not my friend.
Luke: Luke frowns, annoyed. I hate to make an even worse enemy out you, but you haven't been exactly a joy of getting to know, either, Blight.
Amity: Shut up!
Emira giggles, putting an arm around Luke.
Emira: He's funny. Now it makes sense. He seems too cool for you.
Luke: I am?
Amity: You can leave now. All of you.
And with that she walks back to the kid's corner. Emira chuckles and winks at Luke who chuckles and blushes.
The three of them are walking around the library.
Edric: So, you're the human we've heard so much about.
Luke: Yup. That'd be me. The name's Luke Noceda. And, don't tell me, you two are Amity's older siblings, right?
Emira: Wow. First guess. What gave it away?
Luke: Well, let me put down the clues in reverse order. First, you referred to someone as "mom" when you gave that lunch bag. Second, the pet name "Mittens." And three, and this was more than enough, the obvious resemblance between all three of you.
Edric: Right. That's how most people figure it out.
Emira: You're a smart kid. I'm Emira. And this is Edric. Like you just guessed, we're Amity's older siblings. We heard how you embarrassed her at the school and at the witch covention last week. No wonder she hates you.
Luke: I know. But I didn't mean any of it. I was just sticking up for my friends and in the process, I accidentally made an enemy out of your younger sister. I thought for sure we were cool by now.
Emira: Don't waste your time with Mittens. Me and Ed, we're way more fun. Follow us.
The three of them walk off, Luke looking down at where Emira is holding his wrist.
Scenes shift to a sign reading "- FICTION NON-FICTION-". Edric wipes away the "NON" and hides as Gary, a second librarian walks up, leading patrons.
Gary: And here we go towards our nonfiction section. He gasps when he sees the sign. Fiction, fiction? Is our world but fiction? Then what in my life is real anymore?
He drops down crying and sobbing.
The next prank involved the first Librarian, who was reading while shelving books. As he placed one on the shelf, Emira used her magic and the book started glowing blue, before flying back onto the reshelving cart. This happens several times as she, Edric, and Luke all laughed quietly. Edric then switched the places of the first Librarian and Gary, who was up on a ladder. He realizes he's in the Fiction section.
Gary: Huh? No! Not again!
He drops down crying again and the first librarian falls off a ladder.
The third thing they did involve the demon decimal system. First, Edric held up a dusty book, before He blew the dust at the demon decimal system, which all sneezed, showering the area with notecards. They all laugh as Luke does an epic breakdance and the twins high five.
Amity: Hey!
Amity is standing next to the librarian, both of them with their arms crossed. He looks around.
Librarian: Wait. Where's Gary?
Gary: Gary arrives only to lose his composure again. Coming. Nooo!
He breaks down crying once again.
Luke and the twins are shoved out the front entrance.
Librarian: You've made reading far too fun. Now, stay out!
The door slams shut. The three of them look at it for a second before bursting into laughter. Emira punches Luke's shoulder.
Luke: Amity's even madder at me now. I didn't think that was possible at this point.
Edric: No, when Mittens gets mad, she looks like this. Edric inhaled a sharp breath of air and puffed his cheeks, grunting as he made an angry face that turned red before exhaling and stumbling. Whoa, I almost passed out.
Emira: You're pretty fun, human. She and Edric nod at each other. So, hey, we're coming back tonight. There's a certain book we forgot to…check out.
Edric: And bonus, rumour has it the Wailing Star's supposed to unlock some rare magical event. You in, friend?
Luke: Hmm. Well, I'm not exactly a fan of breaking into libraries. But who could miss out the chance to hang out with cool people. Plus, I do want to know what the Wailing Star does. Ah, what the hell, I'm in.
Edric: Great. Meet back here at midnight. See you, Luke.
The twins leave and Luke waves them off.
Luke: Adios. This is great. Befriending Amity may have been a bust but at least I befriended her siblings. And I might be able to befriend her through them.
Luke takes his leave without knowing Amity was standing around the corner, having seen the whole thing. Just as Edric said, she held her breath and growled in anger until her face turned red. Forcing her to stop and gasp for air.
Amity: Phew! Almost passed out.
Back at the Owl House living room, the baby bat is crying. King has pillows tied to his head and Eda has both her hands detached and plugging her ears while her arms are crossed. Both look like they're on the brink of insanity.
King: It's been hours. How can it keep screaming?
Eda: Ugh. I hate it too, pipsqueak. She reattaches her hands. But think about the money.
The crying continues. Three glass bottles shatter. The glass covering Eda's wanted poster cracks.
King: No amount of snails is worth this torture. He falls on the floor. Make it stop.
Eda: I can't believe I'm about to do this.
She picks the bat up. It immediately stops crying. King and Eda both look at it in disbelief. The Owl Lady cradles the baby and begins gently rocking it.
Eda: Rock, rock. Maternal gesture.
Luke enters the house in excitement.
Luke: I just had the best day! Cool teens like me! Call me a library book 'cause they were checking me out, lady! He looks over to the couch. Ooh. Looks like Amity's not the only ice queen with a hidden soft side. Someone's decided to get motherly.
Eda: Say that again and I steal your tongue.
Luke: Luke walks over. Oh, come on, don't be like that Eda. Look at these cute little guys, of course you need to be motherly. Besides, they couldn't have caused that much trouble.
Luke repeatedly pokes the baby bat. It wakes up and barfs out a smaller version of itself, as does that version. They all chirp and flap their wings.
Luke: AY CARAMBA!
The bats fly upwards, still chirping. One of them breathes fire. Eda, King, and Luke all scream and run away from the couch, which is the unfortunate target. Luke runs for the door, grabbing his messenger bag and Rebellion, strapping both on.
Luke: Parenting sure looks rewarding. E-Enjoy your life lessons. Byyyyyeeee!
He closes the door as he leaves. The bats fly around, knocking things off shelves and causing mayhem. Eda is holding King.
King: Uh, for-for the money?
Eda: For the money.
She ducks out of the way of a green liquid that splashes the wall.
At night-time, Luke is stood near the library entrance. He leans against a pillar, waiting for Edric and Emira to arrive but it's been nearly half an hour and he's getting tired of waiting.
Luke: And…I'm going home. I knew cool teens wanting to hang out with me was too good to be true.
Edric: Just as he proceeds to leave… You may wanna rescind that statement.
Luke: Huh?
Luke turns his head to see the twins by the opposite pillar, wearing their casual clothing.
Emira: Aww, but if you leave now, you'll miss all the fun.
Luke: What!? But, how did you-!? When did you-? You know what, I don't wanna know.
Edric: That's the spirit! You ready to do this kid!
Luke: Luke is excited. You bet I am! Let's get this party started!
They all approach the door.
Edric: It says no trespassing but I'm allergic to the rules.
Edric pulls out a piece of paper and hands it to Emira.
Emira: And dairy.
Edric: Wow, okay. Just expose me.
The paper glows. Emira puts it against the lock on the door. The paper crumbles.
Luke: Whoa! This is awesome!
The lock grows until it's large enough for them to walk through.
Edric: Come on.
The lock shrinks back down once they all enter.
The three of them are now back inside the library for another exploration.
Luke: Standing in a dimly lit lobby. You guys know how to party.
Edric: Edric points. There. The Wailing Star!
They watch the Wailing Star sob as it passes the stained-glass window.
Luke: Is that shooting star crying? Oh! That's why it's called the Wailing Star, I just put that together.
The three of them look around for several seconds but nothing out of the ordinary happened much to their confusion.
Edric: Hmm. Nothing happened.
Luke notices every book beginning to glow green.
Luke: Wait. He walks over to grab a book titled "Extinct Birds of the Boiling Isles". Uh…are these books meant to be glowing?
When he opens the book almost immediately, birds are brought to life, blasting out the book. They fly around the lobby much to the kids' amazement.
Emira: Wow!
Edric: Wow. The Wailing Star magicked the books to life.
Luke, still watching the birds, closes the book. The birds disappear. The three of them share grins.
The three explore the library. At a magazine stand, Edric opens "Regal Couture", which dresses him and Emira in fancy clothing. A peacock flies out of it. Luke grabs "Witch Wares Weekly" and gets a giant sword, among other things.
The three of them are now standing next to the graphic novel section. Luke opens one.
Luke: Nothing happened.
His words appear in a dialogue bubble. They all gasp when it appears, the twins taking steps back.
Edric and Emira: Wow!
That too comes out in a word bubble. Both pop when Luke closes the book, a "THUMP" sound bubble appearing as he does.
A moment later, the three of them were having a free-for-all snowball fight. Each having a copy of "Snowballs, a history." Why anyone would write a 400-page book about snowball was beyond Luke's understanding.
Luke hid behind the corner of a shelf as Edric walked by. Jumping out of cover, Luke opened the book and a barrage of snowballs pelted the teenage Blight boy. Hitting him and making him fall to the ground before Edric fired back at him. The human boy managed to get away from the brother and thought that he was safe for a second before Emira appeared behind him, opening her own copy directly in Luke's face. Pelleting him with snowballs as she laughed.
Taking cover inside the kid's corner, Luke hid behind the same shelf when he watched Amity. When Edric and Emira ran past the kid's corner, laughing happily, Luke stood up and was about to walk out of the room when he turned around. That was when he noticed "Otabin the Bookmaker." The same kid book Amity had read to the kids early that day. It was still on the table, glowing in the magic of the Wailing Star.
Walking over to it, Luke picked up the book. When he opened it, the character Otabin rose up out of the pages. The little creature looked up at the Human boy as he smiled down at him.
(Timeskip)
Eda and King are continuing in their struggles of babysitting but have eventually found a way to calm down the bat babies. Eda is currently reading "Otabin the Bookmaker".
Luke is reading that same book now.
Luke: "...the pages he'd mend. But all the while he longed for a friend."
Otabin: Otabin threads a needle. Friend?
Edric and Emira walk inside with a book inside.
Edric: Luke, check this out.
Emira: Look what we discovered.
Emira opens a book called "Quacks Eats Snacks". A duck swims out of the pages and around the floor, quacking happily.
Luke: Aw. What a cute little quackster.
Emira holds the book out to Edric, who has a pencil. He draws legs on the duck in the book. In the real world, Luke watches in shock as the duck grows matching giant human legs. It quacks hysterically in fear.
Emira: Now he's extra cute.
Edric and Emira laugh as she closes the book and the duck disappears. Needless to say, Luke was disturbed by this cruel act.
Emira: Your turn, Luke.
Luke: Uh…I don't know, this kinda feels a little cruel.
Edric: Edric offers up a pencil. Don't worry, it's not real. It's just a book. Come on. Don't stop the fun.
Luke takes the pencil hesitantly and opens Otabin. He looks at the drawing of him on the page but is too hesitant to vandalize.
Luke: I don't think I can do this.
Edric: Let me help.
Edric grabs his hand and draws angry eyebrows and claws on Otabin. Something starts to rise out of the pages, but Luke slams it closed.
Luke: Okay, I think that's enough fun for one night.
Emira: Whatever. We didn't come here just to doodle. Come on.
Emira takes Luke's hand and leads the way. Luke drops the book face down. A clawed hand grows out of the book, and whatever it is growls.
The three have now arrived by the Romance Section much to Luke's confusion.
Luke: The Romance Section? I never pegged you two to be into this kinda stuff, no offence.
Emira: None taken.
Edric: I think I'm into this one.
Pulls a book titled "The Lone Witch & Secret Room". This made something click inside the wall before he put it back in. Suddenly the bookshelf sank back into the wall and slid to the side, revealing a secret room. It wasn't dusty at all and it was rather nice inside. With two shelves with books, a carpet on the floor, stars and planets hanging from the ceiling, and a table that had a chair and several items.
Luke: Whoa! A secret room!? Luke enters the room as the twins lean against the entrance. This secret hideout is sick! Does it belong to you guys?
Edric: We don't hang out in a library. "Uh, teacher, I'm in love with a dictionary."
Emira: "I'm studying the dork arts." This is Amity's secret hideaway.
Upon hearing this, Luke turned towards them. Not liking where this was going.
Luke: Wait, what!? Amity's!? What are we doing in her secret place!?
Edric: The twins walk up, holding Luke's shoulder. Mittens has gotten too…full of herself. She keeps tattling on us when we cut class.
Emira: She needs to learn not to mess with people like that. So, we're going to find her diary.
Edric: And then post the pages all around school for everyone to see.
Edric and Emira laugh and strike a pose but Luke is feeling the opposite of this right now.
Luke: What? Whoa, whoa! If you do that Amity's gonna get humiliated in front of her entire school! Isn't that taking things a bit too far!
Emira: No. See, we're her family. It's tough love. She needs to learn to lighten up.
Edric and Emira look around while Luke prefers not wanting to get on more of Amity's bad side.
Luke: This still doesn't feel right. A diary's private. It'd be way messed up to publish it! You can't seriously want to embarrass her like that. Maybe we should just leave. He spots something unexpected. Wait, are those... Luke is seeing "Witch-Warrior Azure" books volume 1-4 much to his shock. He runs over in excitement. Witch-Warrior Azure books one through four! This world sells them too!? Awesome! He grabs a different book. Is this cover hand-drawn?
The cover is of Amity dressed as Hecate. Luke opens it, and a small version of Amity rises from the pages via a green ring.
Amity's Diary: I saw that…human boy again.
Luke: Luke gasps, realizing what this is. The diary.
Amity's Diary: I may have overreacted. I don't wanna come off as cruel. I know he's trying to be nice. I just can't show weakness.
Luke: He closes it. Oh crap, I've gotta hide this thing.
Edric and Emira are stood near him
Edric: What've you got there, Luke?
Luke: Luke quickly hides the diary behind his back. Oh. N-Nothing. Just a Witch-Warrior Azure 5 where he goes through his Goth phase.
The diary glows blue and flies out of his hands.
Luke: Huh? No, wait.
Emira catches the diary and hands it to Edric, who opens it. Another mini-Amity emerges.
Amity's Diary: It's not fair. I'm the only one who knows Ed and Em aren't perfect. Why do they keep getting away with things?
Edric & Emira: This is it.
The twins look to Luke in confusion, walking up to him.
Emira: Luke, were you hiding this from us?
Edric: You see how she treats people. How she treats you.
Luke: I know Amity can be kind of an arrogant brat, but no one deserves this, including her. Well… maybe Boscha. If it were Boscha I wouldn't mind. But Amity's a good person at heart. I know it. These are private thoughts, and we absolutely have no right to post these. Let's put it back.
Luke grabbed the diary and tried to pull it away, but Edric didn't let go. Soon, they were both pulling at it in a tug of war, with Emira tugging Edric's waist.
Luke: I won't let you do this to her!
Edric: She needs this.
Emira: It's for her own good.
Pages spill onto the floor, and Luke looks at them in concern. A bunch of mini-Amity's emerge from them.
Amity's Diary: "I wish I had somewhere to go." "Why won't the human leave me alone?" "Called my teacher mom again." "Sorry I haven't written for a while. Wait, why am I apologizing?"
Luke: Oh, crap!
The pages repeat themselves as Luke hurries to pick them all back up.
Amity: Really?
They all turned to see Amity standing at the entrance of the hideaway. Her face was all red in fury and embarrassment.
Luke: Amity!? W-what are you doing here!?
Amity: I overheard Edric and Emira's plan to come back tonight with you. I should've known they'd pull something like this!
Luke: Luke continues picking pages. Amity! I-it's not what it looks like. I can explain!
Amity: Save it!
Edric and Emira struggle to hold back their laughter as Amity hatefully glares at them.
Amity: You two are the worst!
Luke stood up to give the stacked papers and diary back to Amity. She snatches it back but is still angry and hurt.
Amity: But you... I've been trying to figure out what your deal is. Are, are you a poser? A nerd? Did you mean all those nice things you said? I know. She looks at Luke in the eye. You're a bully, Luke.
Luke was hurt by that as an equally hurt Amity runs off, near tears.
Luke: Amity!
He starts going after her but stops as Edric and Emira laugh at their sister's misfortune. They walk out.
Emira: Mittens killed the fun.
Edric: Again. Oh, well. We're headed out to go goblin‐tipping. Wanna come?
Luke: You're just gonna leave?
Emira: Yeah, with you.
Emira grabs Luke's wrist again. This time, he tugs his hand back, knowing what it is he needs to do as this has all gone too far.
Luke: Look, you guys are cool. The twins nod. But I need to go talk to Mittens. I mean, Amity.
Emira: All right. She gives Luke a wink. See you around, cutie.
Her and Edric leave. Luke blushes, then runs off after Amity. Normally, he'd have like to beat on these two for making him look like a jerk but right now, Amity's his top priority.
An angry and hurt Amity walks down an aisle of books, struggling to hold back her tears. Luke comes around the corner and catches up.
Luke: Amity, wait. Let's talk about this!
Amity: First you embarrass me. Then you wanna be my friend? I don't get you, Luke! Pick a side!
Luke: Please, just hear me out. I didn't know that they were after your diary! I never would have agreed to do anything they were planning to do!
Amity: Just go away before things somehow get worse.
Loud footsteps are heard and the two teens look in front to see a vicious monster approach them. It had a large body with long arms with razor-sharp claws, fang-like teeth, and two large legs, and a long tail. However, right in the middle of its chest where its heart could be heard beating loudly. When Luke and Amity looked closer, they saw an Otabin's open book that acted like its beating heart. The book showed the page Edric forced him to draw on him.
Amity: Otabin?
Otabin: With claws and fangs and breaking bones, I found a friend to make my own.
Otabin grabs hold of Amity, Luke tries to pull her but loses his grip when Amity's diary slips off. She ends up getting dragged away and Luke drops on the floor.
Amity: Luke! AAAAAAAHHHHH!
Luke: Amity!
Amity: Amity is taken away. LUKE!
Luke: Amity, hold on, I'm coming!
Amity was slammed against a giant book that was crafted by Otabin. Holding her in place, the monstrous book character brought out a large needle that was threaded with a giant ball of thread. He raised the needle and lowered it in Amity's direction. The witch yelped and turned away, thinking that he was going to stab her. However, instead of killing her, he wrapped her arms and fingers with the glowing green sting. Otabin pulled the thread and sewed her arm into the book, becoming part of the paper itself.
Amity: Why are you doing this? I've been reading you since I was a kid. I know you're not like this. Someone changed you.
Otabin: But friends are what I've always sought. And now a friend my claws have caught.
Luke: Hey!
Amity and Otabin look to see Luke has arrived with Rebellion held in his hand. He gets in a sword stance, his face brimming with determination.
Luke: Let the girl go!
Amity: Luke! You came for me!?
Luke: Just hang in there, Amity! I'll get you out of this!
Otabin: Otobin approaches Luke. Making friends, taking friends, never be without my friends.
Luke: Dude, that is so lazy. You can't rhyme "friends" with "friends".
Amity: Luke!
Luke: Oh! Sorry!
Luke attempts to slash Otobin only for the mutant Bookmaker to catch his blade. The human boy pushes as Otobin is actually having trouble holding him down. Eventually, Luke pushes him off and slices across his chest. Otobin's thick skin prevented him from getting cut but he skids back from the force. Luke charges to attack again, dodging Otobin's attempts to smack him and slicing either his knees and arms. Otobin's attempts an axe punch but Luke slides underneath him before leaping up to stab his back. Otobin cries out in pain but not before grabbing Luke and tossing him into a shelf, losing Rebellion in the process. When he lands upside down, he's buried under a pile of books.
Amity: Luke! No!
Luke emerges from the pile (With book on his head), holding and aiming his new twin Glyph Guns.
Luke: Chew on this!
The Light-Glyph appears in the gems, turning them yellow as light energy courses through the guns before Luke begins firing a rapid barrage of yellow light bullets that pelt Otobin and forces him to cry out in pain as he stumbles back. Luke runs out of the pile and rids on a book cart, firing more bullets as he does that forces Otobin more back. When the cart gets near the monster Luke jumps off and it slams into Otobin, knocking him into a shelf and disorientating him.
Luke lands and spins one of his guns, blowing smoke out of the hole. Amity stared at her saviour/rival in amazement.
Luke: I'll get you down from there!
Luke shoots Amity's restraints with excellent precision, freeing her from the page. She falls down and Amity cries out in surprise until Luke caught her. And to her embarrassment she's being held in a bridal manner. She blushes as Luke smiles.
Luke: You, okay.
Amity: Um…yeah. But could you put me down.
Luke: Luke realizes how he's holding her and blushes too. Oh! My bad!
He lets her down and Amity looks at him in the eyes. The boy she's been trying to push away and who she openly mocked in the covention just saved her life, even after all the things she's said and done to him. It touches her enough to see she was wrong about him.
Amity: Um…thank you.
Luke: Don't mention it, this was pretty much my fault after all.
Amity: But how did you do all that!? That was amazing! And what were those things you just used.
Luke: We humans call these guns, or in my case, my new Glyph Guns. Made them myself from some stuff Eda took from my realm. Just yesterday I combined them with my Light and Electric Glyphs, and they power up like my sword did in our duel. I concentrate real hard and it uses whatever Glyph power I want it to use.
Amity: Wow…that's…amazing. You're full of surprises, aren't you.
Luke: It's a human thing.
Before the heartfelt banter could continue Otobin starts to come around and they panic, prompting Luke to call back Rebellion and grab Amity's wrist.
Luke: Crud! Let's get the hell out of here! Follow me!
The both of them run off just as Otobin recovers. He sees the escape and chases after them.
Otabin: Come back!
Luke and Amity run through the library. They quickly duck behind a small shelf, their faces filled with panic and worry.
Amity: How did this even happen!?
Luke: Uh…I may have had something to do with that?
Amity: Ugh! Why am I not surprised.
Luke: Hey, I didn't want to draw that stuff on him. In fact, I was against doing it, but your idiot brother forced me to draw him with claws and a disfigured face.
Amity: Amity could understand that. Figures this would be my siblings' fault. So, now what?
Luke: I have no idea.
Amity: What do you mean you have no idea!? Didn't you come up with a plan.
Luke: The plan was to get you out of the book and it worked. I didn't even think it'd work. I was just, you know, winging it.
Amity stared at him for a second, before smiling and starting to chuckle. She didn't know why she was laughing in a dangerous situation like this, but she couldn't help but laugh. Seeing her laugh made Luke smile.
Amity: That's funny. You're funny.
Luke: What do you know, so you can smile and laugh after all.
Amity gives Luke a genuine smile but the moment is ruined when Otabin's needle wraps around and ensnares him.
Luke: Oh, crap.
Otabin: Friends.
He uses the needle and thread like a fishing line, reeling him in and he loses all his weapons. Amity runs and grabs Luke's hand. She grabs a ladder with her other hand, creating a tug of war between her and Otabin.
Luke: What are you doing!? Let go! Get out of here!
Amity: No! I won't let go!
Amity hooks her leg around the ladder, pulling even harder but ultimately Otabin was stronger and Amity loses her grip, the momentum sends her screaming and crashing into a return cart.
Amity: Luke!
Luke: Run, Amity!
Otabin catches Luke, pressing him against the page of his large book and sews in his arm, much to his shock. Otabin begins sewing in the rest of his limbs.
Otabin: You squirm and fight, and scream and shout. But friendship always will win out.
Almost all of Luke's limbs have become paper and the thread wraps around his head, the only 3D limb left. Otabin slowly pulls the threads it tight, and Luke braces for it.
It's now Amity's turn to come to the rescue as she rides the return car. She gives a battle cry and slams the cart into the mutant bookmaker. Otabin is launched into a bookshelf, which falls on him. He struggles under it as Amity pulls the string keeping Luke down off the book. All his limbs return to the normal.
Luke: Yes! Third dimension how I've missed you. Thanks for the save!
Amity: Now, we're even!
Before they could celebrate Otabin pushes the shelf off him, angrier than before.
Otabin: We must stay friends until the end. There is no tear I cannot mend.
Before he could react, Otabin grabs Luke again and begins wrapping threads around him.
Luke: Oh man! Not again!
Amity gasps. She notices her diary on the floor which gives her an idea. She picks it up and brings out a pencil, opening it and begins writing.
Amity: "Luke has to right a wrong." A giant magic eraser rises out of the book. Amity catches it. Luke, quick.
She tosses the Eraser and Luke catches it, erasing Edric's drawings on the page of the book. This results in Otabin reverting back to normal and everything falls to the floor. Luke catches Otabin and places him on his feet. Amity walks over and picks him up. Remembering what he did, Otabin is filled with regret.
Otabin: I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over me.
Amity: Hey, it's okay. We're still friends.
Amity cradles Otabin and nods to Luke, who closes the book. Otabin disappears and Amity becomes sad to see him go. Luke walks over to her and grins.
Luke: Didn't I tell you to get out of here?
Amity: She glares. Didn't I tell you to leave me alone. The glare turns into a smile. I guess we're both not good at being told what to do.
Luke: Can't deny that.
And for the first time the two of them share a smile, which turns into laughter for Luke. Amity was silent at first but then joins in the laughter.
By morning Luke and Amity are leaving the library, after cleaning it up, retrieving the lost pages of Amity's diary and placing the books back where they belong. Luke has his weapons and bag strapped back on.
Luke: Man, that was one crazy night. I think I speak for both of us when I say I never want to deal with that again.
Amity: This never happened.
Amity prepares to take her leave, but Luke quickly reaches out.
Luke: Wait. It doesn't make up for reading your diary but you wanna borrow this? Amity turns to see Luke offering Witch-Warrior Azure Volume 5. I noticed you only had volume 1 to 4. I'm sure you'll love it.
Amity takes the book, holding it to her chest, touched by this gesture.
Amity: Thank you.
Luke: No prob. Well, I'll just get out of your hair. See ya.
Luke pockets his hands and proceeds to take his leave. When he walks past her, Amity looks down before calling out to him.
Amity: Luke, wait!
Luke stops and turns to see Amity run up to her with a guilty expression.
Amity: I just want to say, thank you. Despite everything I said, you saved me.
Luke: Ah, don't mention it. It was the least I could do. Besides, you saved me too, so we're even.
Amity: This isn't exactly easy for me to say…but I also want to say I'm sorry.
Luke: This was a surprise. Amity apologized. Huh? Why're you apologizing? I'm the one that read your diary and nearly got us both killed.
Amity: True. But maybe you aren't a bully. I haven't exactly been the friendliest witch either. She looks down in shame. I'm sorry I almost got you dissected by Principal Bump and for those awful things I said in the covention. I've been thinking about what you said and you're right. I don't want us to be enemies anymore either. I'm not sure if I'm ready to be your friend, but I'll think about it.
To her surprise, Luke held out his hand with a smile.
Luke: That works for me. Thanks, Amity.
Amity is a little confused at first but then smiles and shook his hand.
Amity: Well…bye.
Amity takes her leave, waving at Luke with a smile. She stops for a minute to take one last look, blushing as she feels something she's never felt before. Shaking it off, she goes home. Luke watches her leave.
Luke: See ya.
The former enemies weren't exactly friends yet, but this was a giant step for them.
Luke enters the Owl House, putting his sword and blasters away.
Luke: Phew! What a night!
He looks to see everyone is asleep, snoring, on the green couch, Eda holding the baby bats and King on her lap. Luke smiles to see Eda and King had a successful night. The door bangs open, catching Luke by surprise.
Luke: AY!
Hooty: Ding-dong!
Luke: Hooty! What the heck!?
To Luke's shock, something huge squeezes inside. It was revealed to be a giant human head with wings and legs connected to it. Her face had Asian characteristics, with long dark hair, black lips, and red eyes. She also had fangs and talons.
Luke: Ay caramba! Um…I'm guessing you're mama.
Bat Queen: Yi Yi. Mama is I. And I is the Bat Queen.
She whistles and the baby bats fly away from Eda, settling into Bat Queen's hair.
Bat Queen: Aah! Snuggle dumplings.
She vomits a treasure chest, which opens to show several hundred snails, causing a disgusted and disturbed Luke to step back. Bat Queen spits an Aztec death whistle on top of the snails.
Bat Queen: For troubles. Eda is owed one.
She squeezes back out of the doorway and flies away. Luke closes the door and Eda is pleasantly sleep-talking.
Eda: Ah. Sweet babies. She and King wake up, noticing the babies are gone. Babies? Where are the babies?
Luke mimes the Bat Queen arriving and flying away with her babies which Eda and King easily figure out much to their sadness.
Eda: Oh. And I just taught Junior how to pick locks too.
Luke: Look on the bright side Eda, it looks like you had a successful night. Look at all that money you made. He picks up the whistle. And look at this cool whistle that bat head lady gave you. Spit drops off the whistle. I'd wash it before you use it.
Eda and King are still sad.
Eda: Yeah. We did it all for the money.
King: King hugs her. I miss my babies!
Luke: I figured this would happen. So, I got you something from the library.
He takes out and hands Eda a book titled "Coping with Empty Nest Syndrome".
Eda: Eda chuckles. Thanks, kid. So, how was your night?
Luke: Uh…long story short, I broke into a library with cool but jerky teens, accidentally read Amity's diary and had to save her from a monster created by the Power of the Wailing Star. On the bright side I'd say I'm finally making progress with Amity now.
Eda: You broke into a library and read a girl's diary. Kid, I'm so proud right now.
King: Of course, you'd be.
The door squeaks open for Hooty to speak.
Hooty: Hey, you wanna hear about my night?
Everyone groans in sheer annoyance. Luke covers his ears.
Luke: Ugh! No!
Eda: No!
King: That's not a thing anyone ever wants.
Looks like Luke and Amity have put their rivalry behind. They're not exactly friends but it's a good start. And little does Amity know her rocky relationship with Luke will develop into something more 😉.
Up next, Luke, Eda and King have a bet to see whose life is harder. And there's only one way to settle it: BODY SWAP!
