It was a rainy evening in the Inkwell Isles. Down in the depths of Hell, Ember was making more glass art while her father the Devil sat in his fine chair reading his book. Henchman comes in with a cart of two teacups and a pot of tea.
"Duh, hey boss, hey Ember. How you both doin' this fine evening?" Henchman asked.
"Fine." Ember answered as she kept making glass art.
Henchman pours them both their cups of tea and hands it to them. Just then, they hear the telephone ringing. Henchman goes to answer it.
"Fiery Underworld. Henchman speaking." Henchman answered.
Henchman listened on the phone, then his eyes widened.
"Duh, okay hang on." Henchman said.
"Ember! Phone call!" Henchman called.
"Huh. I wonder who that could be?" Ember asked as she set her glass art down.
Ember goes up to Henchman, takes the phone from him and she answers,
"Hello?"
Ember listened for a while, then she gasped.
"Oh, my are you serious? Where are you at?" Ember asked.
The Devil looked at Ember, now realizing something was up.
"Okay, I'll be right over! Bye!" Ember said, then she hung up the phone.
Ember grabs her raincoat and prepares to teleport until her father stopped her.
"Wait a minute darling. What's going on?" The Devil asked.
"It's mama! She's gone into labor! She's having my baby brother at the Inkwell Hospital! I've got to be there!" Ember answered.
The Devil's eyes widened at the news.
"Well then, I'll take you there. Let's go." The Devil said as he grabbed his pitchfork.
He tapped it and both disappeared to the Inkwell Hospital. They both enter the hospital and reach the receptionist desk.
"May I help you?" The receptionist asked.
"My mama's having her baby! Can you tell me which room she's in?" Ember asked.
"Alright dear, what's your mother's name?" The receptionist asked.
"Gwendolyn Hopewell." Ember answered.
"Ah yes. They told me you were coming. Take the elevator to the third floor in room 304." The receptionist answered.
"Great! Thank you!" Ember thanked.
Ember and the Devil take the elevator to the third floor and reach room 304 where Pricilla is outside the door waiting for Ember.
"Ember! Thank goodness you're here!" Priscilla exclaimed.
"Priscilla! I got here as quick as I could!" Ember said as both girls embraced.
"New baby delivery, huh?" The Devil asked.
"Yes, our little brother is here!" Priscilla answered.
"Yay! Can we meet him?" Ember asked.
"Yes, but mama and papa said to keep our voices down." Priscilla explained.
Both girls and the Devil quietly enter Gwen's room and Ember notices her mother Gwen in the hospital bed, holding her newborn brother. Clarence is at Gwen's side as Timothy and Joy noticed Ember's arrival.
Both children embrace Ember and Priscilla. The Devil patted the children's heads, slightly happy to see them again. Joy once again hugs the Devil's leg, to his annoyance. Ember approaches her parents and looks at the little newborn baby.
"Ember, thank you for coming darling." Gwen whispered as Ember gave her mother a light hug and kiss.
"For you mama, anything. What's his name?" Ember whispered back.
"Noah Alan Hopewell." Clarence answered.
"Noah." Ember repeated.
"Wanna hold him? But mind his head just like when Timothy and Joy were newborns." Gwen asked and reminded Ember.
"Yes mama, I will." Ember answered.
Gwen hands Noah to Ember and she looked at her little brother and smiled. Noah opened his eyes.
"Hello, little brother." Ember said softly.
Noah smiled at Ember as she hummed a gentle lullaby. After getting Joy off his leg, The Devil knelt to Ember, wrapped his arm around her and looked at the little newborn baby.
"What's that you were doing?" The Devil asked.
"A lullaby mama sang to me and my sisters and brother when we were babies." Ember answered.
"Huh. May I?" The Devil asked as he reached his hands to her.
"Be gentle father." Ember said as she handed Noah over to the Devil.
The Devil looked at Noah staring at him. The Devil slightly smiled at the little baby and tickled under his chin. Joy clinged onto the Devil once again and snuggled in his fur, to his annoyance. Priscilla snickered at Joy hugging the Devil as Timothy looked at Noah.
"I'm not the only boy in the family anymore." Timothy said.
"I see that." The Devil said.
Just then, Noah started crying. Ember takes Noah from her father and hands him back to her mother. Gwen soothed Noah and calmed him down as Clarence held his wife.
"Alright darling, I think we should go." The Devil whispered to Ember.
"Okay, father." Ember said.
Ember goes up to her human parents and hugs them. Gwen and Clarence give her a kiss. Then, Ember hugged her sisters and brother goodbye. She rejoins her father as he tapped his pitchfork and teleported back to Hell.
They reappear in the library as Ember felt happy for Noah's birth.
"That was interesting." The Devil said.
"So, did you see the little baby?" Henchman asked, eager to know.
"Yes, my brother has been born." Ember happily answered.
"Ooh! That's awesome! What's his name?" Henchman asked.
"Noah Alan Hopewell." Ember answered.
"Noah. That's a cute name." Henchman complimented.
"Yeah. He was a cute little guy." The Devil said as he sat down in his chair.
"I hope mama will be okay once she's out of the hospital." Ember said as she petted Umbra.
"Don't worry dear. She'll be fine. She had your siblings before." The Devil assured her.
"True. Not me though, I was created by mistake by those dreadful storks." Ember said sadly.
"Ember come here." The Devil sternly said, gesturing her.
Ember approached her father as he gestured her to sit on his lap, which she does so.
"Ember, what did we talk about before?" The Devil asked.
"I was… not created by mistake?" Ember nervously answered.
"That's right. Don't ever talk about yourself like that! You are alive for a reason. In fact, you should be thankful to your mother and Clarence for saving your life that fateful night! That stupid stork was gonna take you away to be destroyed after Gwen and Clarence found you! I watched that memory of that night! Despite every horrible thing I've done to them, they still saved your life; even knowing I am your real father!" The Devil said in a serious tone.
Ember's eyes widened that her human parents saved her from certain death.
"Father, I… I had no idea." Ember admitted as she felt guilty.
"Yeah? Well, now you do. Now, be grateful to them for you still being here. Okay?" The Devil asked.
"Okay, father." Ember answered.
"Good. Now, let's go have dinner, shall we?" The Devil asked.
"Yeah, I'm hungry." Ember agreed.
The Devil and Ember head to the dining area to eat dinner. Afterwards, they have radio time together until it was time for bed.
A couple of weeks later, Gwen is home with Noah as Pricilla, Timothy and Joy try to adjust having a new baby in the house. Joy started to feel left out because Gwen was giving more attention to Noah.
One day, Ember comes to her human family with her four friends Isfrid, Marette, Abel and Cliff with her. They enter the house and have a seat on the living room floor.
"So, where's your new little brother?" Isfrid asked.
"Yeah, I wanna see him!" Cliff said excitedly.
"Patience guys. I'm sure mama's bringing him down." Ember assured her friends.
Just then, they hear Gwen coming.
"Oh, I think she's coming now." Abel said.
Gwen enters the living room and notices Ember and her friend's arrival.
"Mama!" Ember exclaimed.
"Ember, so good of you and your friends to come." Gwen said as she soothed Noah.
"We came to see the new baby." Marette said.
"Alright children but be very gentle with Noah." Gwen stated her conditions.
Gwen hands Noah to Ember as she gave a little head rub.
"Aww!" The four friends said.
"Ember, will you keep an eye on Noah? I have to go get some stuff in the other room." Gwen asked.
"Yes mama." Ember answered.
Gwen goes into another room.
Ember sits back down next to Isfrid and her friends.
"Look at him. He's so small and warm." Isfrid complimented.
"Yeah. He's a baby." Ember said.
"May I?" Isfrid asked.
"Okay but be gentle." Ember said.
Ember hands Noah to Isfrid as she soothed him.
"Wow, he is so fragile." Isfrid said.
"My turn!" Marette said.
Isfrid hands Noah to Marette.
"He's as cute as a baby seahorse!" Marette said.
"Ahem!" Abel said, hinting his turn.
Marette sighed, then hands Abel Noah.
"What a cute little 2-week-old human." Abel said.
Cliff uses his large hands and scoops Noah up from Abel.
"Hey! I wasn't done yet!" Abel scolded.
"Aw, but I wanna see the little guy." Cliff said.
Cliff looked at Noah and made cute faces, making him giggle. Meanwhile, Joy comes into the living room and notices Ember and her friends holding Noah. Joy felt jealous and ran off, making Ember notice.
"Joy? Is that you?" Ember asked.
"What's eatin' her?" Marette asked.
"I think the poor girl's jealous." Abel said.
"What makes you say that?" Ember asked.
"Think about it. For a few years, Joy was the youngest, right? Now that Noah is born, she is no longer the center of attention. She thinks that the new baby replaced her, which she's no longer the youngest in the family." Abel explained.
Joy overheard their conversation, feeling hurt by Abel's answer. Out of impulse, Joy sneaks out the back door and runs away from the farm crying.
"That's ridiculous Abel. Gwen and Clarence love Joy no matter what." Isfrid said.
"That's true." Ember said.
Ember and her friends enjoy holding Noah until Gwen returned to the living room.
"Hey kids." Gwen greeted.
"Hey mama!" Ember said.
"Did you all enjoy holding Noah?" Gwen asked.
"Yeah!" All five said at once.
Just then, Noah started crying.
"Oh, I think someone's ready for his nappy wappy." Gwen said, noticing Noah was tired.
Gwen takes Noah from Cliff, goes upstairs and soothes him to sleep. Gwen comes back downstairs to the living room.
"Say, have any of you seen Joy around? It's not like her to not come say hello to you kids." Gwen asked.
"We heard her earlier, but we didn't see where she went." Ember answered.
"Hmm." Gwen said, now getting concerned.
Gwen goes upstairs to Joy's room.
"Joy?" Gwen called.
But no one answers and her room was empty. Next, she checks the other children's bedrooms, but to no avail. Gwen starts to get worried and goes back downstairs.
"Ember, I can't find Joy anywhere!" Gwen said worryingly.
Just then, Priscilla and Timothy come running in.
"Mama! Joy's missing!" Timothy exclaimed.
"What?!" Gwen asked shockingly.
"Oh no…" Isfrid said worryingly as Marette glared at Abel.
"We can't find her! We looked everywhere!" Priscilla fearfully said.
Ember gets up and tries to comfort her mother.
"Alright, I'll find her." Gwen said.
Then she whistled and her magic carpet Cerulean Bolt came flying down. Gwen hops on.
"I'll go find her. You children stay here and keep an eye on Noah. Priscilla, you're in charge till I get back. Okay?" Gwen instructed.
"Yes mama." All three children said.
"Okay, buddy. Joy's gone missing. Let's find her!" Gwen instructed her magic carpet.
Cerulean Bolt gives a salute gesture and flies out of the house beginning their search. Ember grew worried and decided to get more help.
"Ember! Where are you going?" Isfrid asked.
"I'll be right back! I'm gonna get help!" Ember said.
Then, she teleports back to Hell. Ember runs up to in the dungeon in the observatory tower where the Devil observes his salves working. The Devil is shocked to see Ember returning so early. He comes out of the tower and down to his daughter.
"Ember! You're home early." The Devil said.
"Father! We have an emergency!" Ember said worryingly.
"What's wrong? What happened?" The Devil asked.
"It's Joy! She's missing!" Ember answered as tears poured down her face.
"Honey, calm down. Where's your mother?" The Devil asked.
"She's flying on Cerulean Bolt searching for Joy." Ember answered.
"Hmm. I can easily find her. Come with me." The Devil said.
He leads Ember to his magic mirror with Henchman tagging along.
"Show me the little annoying bundle of Joy!" The Devil ordered the mirror.
The mirror shows a vision of Joy lost somewhere in the mountains crying.
"Found her." The Devil said.
"Let's go let mama know." Ember said as she took her father's hand.
"Dear, you need to rejoin your friends. Henchman and I will handle this." The Devil instructed.
Ember nodded and teleported back to the farm.
Meanwhile in the mountains, Joy sat down by some large rocks and started crying, now realizing she was lost. Suddenly, a puff of smoke appeared from behind her, startling her. The Devil and Henchman appear in front of her.
"There you are!" The Devil said.
Joy wiped her tears and looked up at the Devil.
"What were you thinking running away all the way out here?!" The Devil scolded.
"Now, now boss. Let's hear what Joy has to say." Henchman said, calming his boss.
"Ugh, fine." The Devil reluctantly agreed.
Henchman sits down next to Joy, lifts her and sets her on his knee and wrapped his arm around her.
"Aw Joy, what's the matter? You wanna tell your ol' buddy Henchman about it?" Henchman asked soothingly.
"I… I've been replaced." Joy nervously admitted.
"Replaced? What do you mean?" Henchman asked.
"Since Noah was born, nobody cares about me anymore." Joy said sadly.
"What? That's not true." Henchman assured her.
"Well, why don't they wanna play with me anymore?" Joy asked.
"Joy, having a new sibling is tough. But that doesn't mean your mommy and daddy are gonna stop loving and spending time with you." Henchman said.
Joy sniffled and looked up at Henchman.
"It's okay to sometimes feel sad or mad or do things you don't really mean to do. Your parents are always gonna love you no matter what." Henchman said.
The Devil thought for a moment and got an idea. He sits down next to Joy as she snuggled into his fur, even though the Devil knew to expect it.
"Uh, Joy?" The Devil asked.
Joy looked up at the Devil.
"You know, Ember once felt she was replaced too when she was your age." The Devil admitted.
Joy looked confused.
"Really?" Joy asked.
"Yes. She once told me when she was about your age, your brother Timothy was born. Ember thought she was replaced because he was getting more attention than she or Priscilla. But Ember was told that having a new sibling is a big change, but nothing was going to change with her parents loving her." The Devil explained.
Joy thought for a moment and realized the Devil was on to something.
"I didn't know that." Joy said.
"Yeah, she felt exactly like you are right now. But then she was told that she would never be replaced and having younger siblings is a very special thing." The Devil said.
Joy felt guilty and started to think maybe she wasn't going to be replaced after all. Joy gives the Devil another snuggle, to his annoyance.
"D'aww. I think you got through to her boss." Henchman said as he tousled Joy's hair.
Joy looked and Henchman and gives him a hug.
"D'aaw, you little bundle of Joy." Henchman said and gave her a kiss on her cheek.
Joy slightly giggled.
"Oh, do I see a smile? Yes, I see a smile!" Henchman said happily to cheer her up.
Just then, they hear someone approaching from the sky. The Devil stood up and held Joy in his arms. Gwen flying on Cerulean Bolt tracked Joy to the mountains. She lands on the ground and to her shock, she finds Joy with the Devil and Henchman.
"Joy!" Gwen exclaimed.
"Mommy!" Joy exclaimed.
Gwen runs up to the Devil, takes Joy from him and hugged her affectionately.
"Honey, why did you run off? You know better than to leave the house!" Gwen scolded.
"Duh, Gwen? I think you should hear her out." Henchman said.
Gwen calms down then looked at Joy tearing up.
"I… I'm sorry. I uh…" Joy nervously said and looked at Henchman.
"Go ahead Joy. Don't be afraid to tell her what you told us." Henchman encouraged her.
Joy looked at her mother.
"I… felt Noah was replacing me. You and papa don't play with me as much anymore. I thought you didn't care about me anymore." Joy confessed as tears roll down her face.
Gwen felt heartbroken at her daughter's confession.
"Oh, sweetie. I know having Noah is a big change. But no one replaces anyone in our family. Not Priscilla. Not Ember. Not Timothy. Not even you. Our family isn't complete without you. Any of you." Gwen assured her.
Joy started crying in her mother's chest.
"Honey, it's gonna be okay." Gwen said gently.
Gwen looked at the Devil and Henchman.
"You two found her and talked to her?" Gwen asked.
"Our little girl told me what was happening and needed my help." The Devil explained.
"Well, thanks." Gwen thanked.
Gwen took Joy and hopped on Cerulean Bolt and flew away.
"Well, that went well." The Devil said.
"Yes boss. You did a wonderful job with Joy." Henchman complimented.
"Why thank you Henchman. Now, let's get back to work, shall we?" The Devil asked.
"Yes boss." Henchman agreed.
The Devil tapped his pitchfork, and both disappeared back to Hell.
Meanwhile, Gwen flies Joy back to the farm and lifted her up in her arms. Gwen entered the house where Ember, her siblings and her friends were eagerly waiting.
"Joy!" All the children exclaimed.
They all gather around Gwen and give Joy a group hug. Joy started to feel happy from their embrace.
"Joy we were so worried!" Ember said.
"Don't you ever do that again!" Priscilla added.
"Yeah, we wouldn't be the five Hopewells without you." Timothy said.
"Hey little Joy, where's my hug? I didn't get my hug yet." Cliff said looking down at her.
Joy squealed excitedly and hugged Cliff's arm. Cliff scooped her in his hand and lets her snuggle in his furry chest.
"Hey Joy? Someone's got something to say to you." Isfrid said.
Joy looked and saw Abel getting shoved towards her by Marette. Abel looked at Marette nervously as she cracked her knuckles, threatening him.
"Uh… Joy? I… want to… apologize for what I said. I didn't really mean it." Abel apologized feeling guilty.
"You should be ashamed of yourself!" Marette scolded.
Everyone gave Abel a disappointing look.
"Alright. I think we've had enough fun for today. Ember, what do you say we drop your friends off home?" Gwen asked.
"Okay." Ember said.
Gwen gathers Ember and her friends while Joy still snuggled in Cliff's fur. Gwen uses teleportation to drop off all of Ember's friends then returns home with Joy in her arms.
"Honey, isn't it time for us to color?" Gwen asked Joy.
"Yay! Coloring! Yeah!" Joy said excitedly.
Gwen carries Joy upstairs to her room to spend time with her while Noah was sleeping. Ember smiled as she along with Timothy and Priscilla decide to go play together. Ember felt happy that Joy was feeling better and overcoming her jealousy of Noah and promised to be a good sister to him.
