Jyn opened her eyes to the unfamiliar surroundings, disoriented for some moments, until her memories of the previous night rushed back. With a contented sigh, she wrapped herself more tightly in the bedclothes which smelled pleasantly fresh, with a hint of Cassian's scent. She had slept much better than she remembered in years, without nightmares or immediate fears for her safety. Her weapons were always within reach, true, but for once her constantly alert brain had relaxed enough to allow her a full night of proper rest.
She was still surprised that she felt so safe around Cassian. No one had made her feel that way since her parents' loss. She smiled at the irony. Technically it had been her who had saved him, but somehow, in an instinctive level, she knew that she could trust him. It had been so long since someone treated her with respect, without underestimating her or without judging her, that it was refreshing.
The air inside the ramshackle cabin of her improvised overnight quarters was a bit chilly, but the thick bedclothes had created a cozy cocoon around her and she was reluctant to get up. Rubbing her eyes and letting out a resigned sigh, she pushed back the linens and blankets and sat up, searching for her shoes. Her clothes weren't appropriate for the climate or the modest environment of Ferrix, but at least she'd had time to grab her coat before running out of the brothel unnoticed by everyone, to follow the quarrelsome corpos. She wondered how much time her working mates and the madam had taken to notice her absence, and if someone was searching for her. She doubted it. The bosses and employers in the brothel didn't care for their personnel unless they caused trouble, and the corpos would surely be too embarrassed for having been knocked out, plundered and stolen their service weapons to do much more than lick their wounds and battered pride. She almost could visualize them making up a fake story in which they were assaulted by a gang of mobsters or something of the sort, in order to justify themselves when they had to report to their superiors. Jyn was absolutely certain that they wouldn't make the Pre-Mor authorities waste resources and time chasing an ordinary guy from who knew where and a prostitute.
Served them well for being pieces of shit. She had never been so glad of something as she was of having got rid of that pair of rotters. And the best of all was that she wouldn't have to endure sex with them. The mere thought of them touching her made her shudder in disgust.
She had woken up in high spirits for the first time since she didn't remember when. She was aware that she was out of work again and had no idea of what she would do right then, but she didn't care for once. She would worry about that later.
Jyn stepped cautiously out of the ship to look for a secluded space among the piles of junk and relieve herself. The cold was biting, so she hurried up with her task and returned to the shelter. She used part of the water from the drum to wash herself as best as she could. She wanted to look presentable to Cassian. Lastly, she unmade the bunk and folded the bedclothes neatly. She didn't dare to presume that she would spend another night there.
Just then the commlink in her pocket beeped and she grabbed it. "Good morning, Jyn. I hope I haven't woken you up."
She smiled at his voice. "Good morning Cassian. I was already awake. How are you?"
"Fine. And you?"
"Same. Ready for the day," she answered.
"Great. I'm bringing you breakfast, and once you've eaten, we'll discuss plans, okay?"
"Okay. See you in a bit."
"Sure. Over and out."
Jyn put the commlink back in her pocket and waited for Cassian. The prospect of spending more time with him was exciting and she felt full of energy. There was not much she could do while waiting apart from looking over her surroundings idly. He'd said that that had been his family's ship. She wondered if he'd enjoyed many trips in that reduced space with his parents and possible siblings, and felt curious about his lost sister. Her disappearance undoubtedly must have been a family tragedy and Jyn felt pity for them. She knew first hand how much painful was to lose someone you love.
Someone knocked softly on the closed entrance ramp, making her jump a bit. "It's me, Cassian. Room service at your disposal, ma'am."
Jyn chuckled and rolled her eyes, and went to open the ramp.
