Chapter One:

Fate Begins

Genkai's Temple

Living peacefully with Genkai from the moment she had met the old lady years ago had been a truly enriching experience. The serenity and wisdom that Genkai exuded were qualities that Usagi would never take for granted. However, at this moment, as she lay sprawled on the dojo floor, aching and bruised, she couldn't help but wonder if she was in over her head.

"Get up, girl!" Genkai's voice sliced through the air like a whip, demanding her immediate attention. Usagi groaned in response, her body still throbbing from the energy blast that had sent her sprawling. The dojo was bathed in the soft, golden glow of the setting sun, casting long shadows across the polished wooden floor. Genkai stood at one end, her arms crossed, and a stern expression etched into her features.

Usagi pushed herself to her feet, wincing as she gingerly picked up the wooden sword that had fallen from her grasp. She was a gentle soul, a bunny demon with a heart too kind for the brutal world of martial arts. Her large, innocent eyes glistened with trepidation, reflecting the turmoil within her.

"You won't get far in this world if you can't stand up for yourself," Genkai hissed angrily, her voice sternly scolding the bunny. Usagi nodded, her long bunny ears drooping.

"I know, Genkai," she replied, her voice filled with uncertainty, "but I'm just afraid of hurting you. I don't want to hurt anyone."

Genkai's sigh was heavy with the weight of experience as she approached Usagi. "Fear is your enemy, Usagi. You have to learn to control it, or it will control you."

With a sudden and precise movement, Genkai swung her wooden sword at Usagi. Reacting on instinct, Usagi blocked the attack, the impact sending a sharp jolt of pain up her arm. She winced but managed to maintain her stance.

"Good block," Genkai acknowledged with a firm voice, "But you hesitated. In a real fight, hesitation could cost you your life. You can't afford to be afraid of hurting your opponent. This is about survival."

Usagi nodded, her ears twitching with anxiety. She took a deep breath, trying to gather her resolve. She knew that Genkai was right; she had to conquer her fear.

Fear was the formidable hurdle that loomed before her. Both Genkai and Usagi were well aware of the young woman's physical capabilities. She could indeed fight and hold her own, but her constant battle with anxiety created a significant impediment, especially during combat scenarios. Her deepest fear was the possibility of causing harm to others, and it was this concern that often gripped her heart and held her back.

Genkai continued to launch attacks, and Usagi did her best to parry and counter. But her movements were slow, burdened by her lingering hesitation, and her strikes lacked the necessary force. Genkai easily deflected her attacks, her eyes reflecting a knowing smile.

"Usagi, you're going to have to hit harder," Genkai advised harshly. "If you're too gentle, your opponents won't take you seriously."

Tears welled up in Usagi's eyes as she endeavored to muster more strength. With determination, she swung her wooden sword with renewed vigor, and this time, it connected with Genkai's wooden sword with a satisfying thud.

Genkai nodded in approval. "That's better. Now, remember, this is just training. It's okay to make mistakes here. You won't hurt me. But out there, in the real world, hesitation will be your downfall."

Usagi wiped away a tear with her sleeve and nodded, her determination growing. She knew she had a long way to go, but with Genkai's guidance and her own unwavering perseverance, she would find the strength to confront her fears and protect those she cared about.

With each swing and block, Usagi's confidence grew. She could feel her fear slowly recede, replaced by a newfound determination. Genkai's eyes, though still sharp and unyielding, held a glint of approval as she watched her young pupil's progress. As the training session continued, Usagi's strikes became more powerful and precise. She managed to land a few hits on Genkai, and the old master grunted in acknowledgment each time she felt the impact of Usagi's blows. It was a small victory, but it filled Usagi with a sense of accomplishment she had never felt before. Genkai had never been one to go easy on someone she was training, but the rabbit in front of her had become too much like a daughter figure for her to soften up to.

"Excellent, Usagi," Genkai said, her voice no longer stern but now genuinely impressed. "You're starting to grasp it. Remember, in battle, you have to adapt, overcome, and strike without hesitation. Trust your instincts, and you'll become a formidable warrior."

Usagi nodded, her rabbit ears perking up with newfound confidence. She felt a rush of energy surging through her, the sense that she was on the right path. Despite her gentle nature, she was determined to learn to protect those she cared about, just as Genkai had taught her. The setting sun cast long, dramatic shadows across the dojo, painting a symbolic image of the transformation happening within Usagi. She and Genkai continued their training, with each clash of wooden swords bringing her closer to her goal.

" What would you like me to cook for dinner Master Genkai?"

" How about rabbit stew?"

" ...Genkai!"

" Just teasing."

Later that day, Usagi found herself in the backyard, tending to the myriad of plants that graced the area. While watering them might seem like a chore to some, for Usagi, it was a soothing and familiar ritual, a way to connect with the lush life that enveloped her. Each plant had its distinct needs and personality, and she treated them all with care and tenderness. In these serene moments, she found solace in the company of her leafy companions.

To Usagi, her plants were akin to her children, and she cherished each and every one of them, nurturing them as they grew and thrived. Genkai had generously permitted Usagi to cultivate a diverse array of flowers and plants in the temple's yard, and the tranquil temple surroundings provided the ideal backdrop for Usagi's love of nature and her desire to see it flourish.

While continuing her care for the plants, Usagi reached her favorite rose bush. Its striking red blossoms never failed to captivate her with their beauty. She meticulously pruned any parts that might harm the plant, and in the process, her hand brushed against a thorn.

"Ow!" She yelped in surprise as the thorn pricked her hand, and she quickly grimaced at the small injury. Usagi instinctively brought her bleeding finger to her lips, sucking away the blood that emerged, her gentle nature extending even to her own well-being.

Her reflection on how roses, with their breathtaking beauty, also concealed hidden dangers in their thorns, served as a reminder that even the most exquisite things in life could have their own share of hazards. She sighed and continued her work, completing her care for the plants. Afterward, the bunny-demon returned to her room, which was also adorned with plants needing attention. Their green leaves and delicate blossoms brought life and vibrancy to her room, creating a tranquil oasis that provided her with comfort.

In Spirit World

"That's a good one, Botan! But let's get serious, okay?" a black-haired teenager chuckled, flashing a friendly smile at the blue-haired ferry girl beside him, which caused her to frown and shoot him a disapproving glare.

"Idiot, why would I lie to you!?" Botan retorted, her voice tinged with exasperation.

"Why would the Spirit World be run by a toddler!?" He burst into laughter and playfully pointed towards the toddler sitting in front of him, a gesture that earned him a swift smack from Botan.

"Don't point your finger at him!" the blue-haired girl snapped, growing increasingly irritated by the teenager's disrespectful behavior. Yusuke couldn't help but laugh even harder, which annoyed the toddler in front of him.

"And to think I was scared of the mighty King Yama!" Yusuke continued to giggle, clutching his stomach in pain from laughing too much. The toddler cleared his throat and glared at the teenager.

"To be more exact, I am the Mighty King Koenma, and I am the son of King Yama," Koenma introduced himself to the rebellious teen. "Even though I appear to be a child, I've been around over 50 times longer than you have, so watch your mouth when you speak to me."

Yusuke gave him a mischievous closed smile and continued joking, "So it takes you hundreds of years to move past a diaper."

Botan gasped at the joke and gave him another smack on the head, which didn't seem to faze him much as Yusuke was still giggling.

"Can't you show an ounce of decency!"

That was one of the first moments that would mark Yusuke's life-changing adventures, leading him into an unpredictable future. Little did he know that this seemingly childish ruler, Koenma, would soon become an integral part of his journey. Their meeting might have started with a joke, but it was the beginning of a tale that would test his courage, unravel mysteries, and introduce him to a world filled with spirits, demons, and unimaginable challenges.

In Human World

A student with striking red, long hair that appeared exotic in the context of Japan. A handsome face that was enough to make all the girls at his school swoon, and his piercing green eyes seemed to have the uncanny ability to peer into someone's soul. Shuichi Minamino was experiencing a typical day at school. He sat peacefully at his desk, engrossed in a book during his free time. The calm atmosphere of the classroom was a stark contrast to the extraordinary nature hidden beneath his seemingly ordinary appearance.

It would have been a perfect day for him, if not for the lingering concern that weighed heavily on his mind—his deep worry for his human mother. She had fallen seriously ill with a sickness of unknown origin, one that defied all attempts at a cure.

Desperate to help, he had even employed his own supernatural abilities and extensive knowledge of plants, but nothing in his arsenal seemed to have any effect. The looming concern about his ailing mother was the sole reason for his terrible mood, and what didn't help was the constant attention he received from the girls in his class.

He had already endured two confessions of love and two more girls attempting to orchestrate "accidental" encounters with him. It wasn't his fault that he had been born attractive in this life and possibly in his past life, but he longed for a moment of respite from the constant attention he was receiving. Nevertheless, he continued to maintain a facade of kindness and politeness towards everyone, wearing a mask that concealed the turmoil within him, a mask that no one but he knew was fake.

There was one individual who saw through the facade, but that person was far from being human.

"Excuse me, Shuichi?" a voice interrupted his thoughts, causing him to sigh inwardly.

'Here we go again,' he thought to himself, closing his book and making eye contact with the blushing female standing in front of him. To him, the girl was not unattractive. By Japan's beauty standards, she possessed long black hair, a slender body with the right curves, and a beauty mark under her lips, making her breathtaking to everyone, but Shuichi. He simply wasn't interested in human girls, especially since they were much younger than him.

"Hello, Sakura-san. How may I help you?" He greeted her with a polite smile, which made her honey-colored eyes shine brightly with his attention. Sakura looked at him shyly and pulled out a letter from behind – a love letter that she had written for him.

"Shuichi, I know you've rejected many girls before, but I just wanted to confess that I really like you!" Sakura admitted in front of the whole class, silencing the room. Many other girls watched in jealousy as the most beautiful girl in their class confessed to the handsome young man, secretly hoping they had a chance with Shuichi. Sakura was not only one of the sweetest but also one of the most popular girls in school. The males watched with envy, wishing she had confessed to them instead.

Shuichi studied her for a few seconds, his gaze lingering on her, while Sakura nervously awaited his response. He couldn't help but feel a pang of empathy for her, realizing that her decision to make this public confession was undoubtedly embarrassing. Simultaneously, he couldn't ignore the fact that Sakura wasn't exactly the person she portrayed herself to be.

She was indeed a cleverly concealed vixen, her intelligence evident in her calculated approach. Her cunning nature was a curious mix of attraction and irritation for Shuichi. He comprehended that she had orchestrated this public confession to corner him into a situation where he couldn't reject her without appearing heartless. In her own perception, she was the "most perfectly perfect girl in the world" and thus deserved to be with the finest boy in the school, someone who, to her eyes, also seemed perfectly perfect like her.

However, Sakura had made a grave miscalculation. Shuichi wasn't just an ordinary schoolboy, and he wasn't even human enough to truly fit the mold. While he had the body of a human, his true nature was something quite different. The incident with Sakura hardly registered in his thoughts, and concerns about how he might be perceived by others were of little consequence. He had far more pressing matters on his mind, such as his ailing mother, who needed his care and attention.

"I am sorry, Sakura, but I do not share the same feelings. I have to decline," he stated firmly. His words caused Sakura to look at him with wide, disbelieving eyes.

"I am not looking for a relationship right now," he added.

"Oh... I get it..." Sakura stuttered, her gaze still fixed on him. Her eyes glistened with tears, but she continued, "But, I still wanted to confess. I knew that this was a long-shot, but confessing will help me move on."

"I hope it does. I'm flattered that you feel this way about me, and I'm sorry that I cannot reciprocate the feelings," Shuichi expressed his apology.

Sakura collected herself and offered him a smile, which did surprise Shuichi. He hadn't anticipated her taking rejection so gracefully. Then again, he couldn't help but consider that she had a knack for putting on a facade, always acting fake to suit her image.

"It's okay," Sakura smiled and left the room. As she departed, a few boys approached Shuichi, asking why he had turned her down. Shuichi calmly explained that he wasn't ready for a relationship, responding with kindness and a smile.

Once free time came to an end, Shuichi made his way to his next class, waiting until the hallways were less crowded. As he continued on his way, he paused when he heard a commotion coming from an empty classroom. Curiosity got the best of him, and he cautiously peeked in with one eye, only to witness the school's beauty, Sakura, kicking a desk in anger. Mitsuki, one of her usual friends, stood there, trembling under Sakura's intense gaze.

"He rejected me, Mitsuki!" Sakura growled in frustration, her pacing creating a tense atmosphere in the room.

"Yeah... I know, I'm sorry, Sakura!" Mitsuki apologized, her voice filled with apprehension.

"You said I had a chance!" Tsubaki, another of Sakura's friends, attempted to console the black-haired girl by placing a hand on her shoulder. However, Sakura forcefully slapped her hand away.

"Back off, Tsubaki! I am pissed off!" Sakura shouted at the girl behind her. She turned her attention back to Mitsuki, who trembled even more as she saw Sakura drawing closer. With a swift and angry motion, Sakura delivered another stinging slap to Mitsuki's face, leaving the poor girl in tears and watching helplessly as Sakura threw a tantrum in the classroom.

Shuichi couldn't help but feel a mix of sympathy for Mitsuki and revulsion at Sakura's true character, which had been laid bare for all to see. It was a stark reminder that beauty could be merely skin deep, and true ugliness could lie beneath the surface. This was the real Sakura, the one Shuichi had known she'd been hiding behind a facade. It was a stark and rather unappealing contrast to the image she had cultivated.

Seeing that Sakura had directed her anger elsewhere, Shuichi decided to continue on his way, confident that she wouldn't inflict any more harm on the other girl. He understood that the situation would draw even more attention if Mitsuki suffered more than just a red cheek.

The rest of the day passed by in a blur, and Shuichi found himself preoccupied with thoughts of his ailing mother. The burden of her illness weighed heavily on his shoulders, and he knew he needed to find a way to help her. With the final bell signaling the end of the school day, Shuichi made his way to the hospital, his determination to care for his mother stronger than ever. Little did he know that his life was about to take an unexpected turn, one that would lead him down a path filled with supernatural mysteries and challenges that he could never have imagined.

Amidst the trials and adventures he was about to embark on, love would also find a way to him, entwining his fate with that of others in ways he could never have foreseen.
