Victoria hands out the Earring Communications Lacrima and briefs them on her latest meeting with the Vice President. "It's a small group." she says as everyone fastens the E.C.L. to their ears. "Unsurprisingly, there aren't a lot of people willing to go after one of Valiance's most infamous Dark Mages, S-Class level be damned. There's five S-Class Mages coming on this mission and ten Rune Knights. You're to keep a distance of fifty feet between us at all times. Remember, your primary goal is making sure you're not seen and finding Cole." Victoria says. "Got it?"

"Got it." the five of them say.

Victoria nods. "Then let's move out. Stay at the border of Soncha Kapa until you see us move." she orders. "Let's go, birdies."

Episode 11 (Part 1): A Vindictive Son

Victoria stands in line with the other four S-Class Mages. None of them look familiar to her so she assumes they're all from no name guilds - all of them except for one that is. She vaguely recognizes one of the young men.

He has acacia gray, shoulder-length hair and russet red eyes. He's muscular, as every Mage usually is, and annoyingly enough, he's a good deal taller than her. He's unusually scarred too, his body absolutely littered with various scars of differing lengths and intensity. It's expected that you earn a few battle scars in this line of work but he has so many Victoria suspects he didn't get them from working as a Mage.

The scarred young man wears a dark gray tattered jacket with short sleeves and a white furred hoodie over a black tank top (Victoria can sort of make out the red emblem on his right shoulder - Silver Sabelum maybe? She can't see it too well because of the jacket's sleeve.). He also has a gunmetal shoulder plate hooked to a navy blue belt crossing his chest.

"Just where the hell have I seen that tall bastard before?" Victoria mumbles under her breath. She raises an eyebrow as the young man pulls out a bundle of black cloth from his pack. He unravels it, revealing it to be a rather dramatic black mantle, and puts it to his back. She can't take it anymore. "Is it really that cold to you?" Victoria asks as she approaches him.

The young man turns when he hears her speak. He smirks, instantly finding the tiny woman amusing. "What, can't a guy bundle up at night so he keeps warm?"

Victoria scoffs, crossing her arms. "If you knew we were coming out this late, why didn't you wear something warmer?" she asks. "That tank top and that sad excuse for a jacket aren't doing you any favors."

He grins, leaning down to Victoria's height tauntingly. "Oh? I didn't know I had a fan. What're you doing watching me that closely, sweet cheeks?" he asks.

Victoria rolls her eyes and shoves him back by grabbing his face. "Don't get any weird ideas. I'm married and you're definitely not my type." she says, distastefully giving the young man a once over.

He blinks, looking surprised for a second as he processes what she said. Then he grins again, standing up to his full height. "Don't worry, you're not my type either,'' he says with a wink.

Victoria scrutinizes him for another second before cracking a smile. "Victoria Mormo, Aberrant Hydra." she introduces herself.

"Saul Morfran of Silver Sabelum." he introduces himself with a dramatic bow. "Y'know when this whole shebang is gonna get going?"

"Not a clue." Victoria says, glancing down when something shiny on Saul's chest catches her eye.

Saul smiles, studying Victoria's expression. "What, can't a guy wear some jewelry now and then?" he asks and takes the silver chain around his neck off. "It's a locket. Something wrong there, short stack?" Saul asks teasingly. His smile falters when he sees the haunted look on Victoria's face. "Mormo?"

Victoria shakes her head, snapping out of her daze. "Nothing. It's nothing. I'm fine." she says. "Just...stick close to me, alright?" she says and glances behind her, eyeing the border where the little birds from Phoenix Fire are waiting.

Supposed to be waiting.

They're gone and by Soasis' divine grace, Victoria is going to smite those children from existence.

She turns and gives Saul a strained smile. "Excuse me for just a minute, I have to go yell at some children."

Fifteen minutes earlier, by the borders of Soncha Kapa…

"You're stupid."

"You're more stupid."

"You're stupider."

Akane rolls her eyes at Veiss. "That's not a word, stupid."

Veiss grits his teeth, the tips of his pointy ears turning pink. "Not everybody had the opportunity to get an education like you, Kumiko." he says, flicking Akane's forehead.

Akane grits her teeth and flicks his forehead right back. "Don't talk about me like you know me, Dregliark." she snaps. "Now shut up, we have to pay attention to the Rune Knights and the S-Class Mages-"

"Or we could just capture Cole right now."

Everyone stops what they're doing and turns to look at Novem. "Huh?"

"That's him right there, isn't it?" Novem asks, tugging at Emile's hair and forcefully turning his head in another direction. "Master Glinda said red hair and bandages everywhere, right?"

Sure enough, it wasn't hard to see Cole from where they were.

"He's covered even more than you are, Veiss." Emile snickers.

Veiss rolls his eyes and slaps the back of Emile's head. "Shut up, scarface." he says and tightens the bandages covering his forehead. "Just like me, I'm sure he has his reasons for wearing them. Unlike that hairclip of yours that does nothing but sit pretty in your hair, these aren't a fashion statement." Veiss says snarkily.

Mana sighs and turns her attention back to Cole. Calypso has long since set out to scout out the area Victoria said they would be patrolling so she fortunately doesn't have to listen to Veiss and Akane bicker with anything that breathes.

But back to Cole. He looks just as Glinda described: a young man with spiky red hair who's covered in bandages from head to torso. The bandages cover his arms, torso, and the lower half of his face - covering everything right under his eyes. He has a muscular, athletic build. Cole wears a black sleeveless trench coat over a sleeveless blue shirt. He also has on black jeans with matching black combat boots. Mana can also see some sort of pendant dangling from his neck that catches the moonlight every so often.

Cole is watching the group of Mages and Rune Knights from atop a nearby tree (nearby to them, a bit far away from the group). He's silent and unmoving, patiently waiting for them to move out.

Veiss scoffs and crosses his arms. "Well this was an easy three million Jewels and a splendid waste of time." he says.

"Don't be stupid." Akane says. "The man is out for blood. And he's a grown man which more than likely means he's stronger than us." she says. "We're not going to get him that easily."

"So what do you propose we do?" Mana asks.

"I don't know but we can't just run at him, he'll kick our asses." Akane says. "What kind of Magic does this guy even have?"

"I don't know but I've been trying to figure out where I've heard his name before." Emile says. "Cole...Match, I think." he says. "Remember when I said I met a guy covered in bandages the last time I was in Arkcester, Veiss?"

Emile thinks for a moment. "Kind of. When I visited Arkcester again a couple years ago I ran into this guy who kind of reminded me of you and Danate, actually. He wore a bunch of bandages too and he was kinda scary but we talked for a bit. Turns out I just met him at a bad time - it was around the anniversary of his entire village's massacre." he says and sighs. "Maybe it really is just a combination of how Ogygia is normally and being sad about his sister missing." Emile says.

"Yeah, you said something about - oh. It was Cole?" Veiss asks.

Emile nods. "Like I said before, we got to talking. I know he said something about this title people have taken to calling him, I just can't remember for the life of me what it is. I know if I can remember, I'll remember what he said about his Magic…" he trails off, a frustrated look on his face.

"Right, well, you think on that, Em." Akane sighs.

"What's the plan if we can't get him before everything gets going?" Mana asks.

Everyone is silent for a minute until Veiss speaks up. "Well, if no one else has an idea, would you hear me out?"

"Is this really a good idea?" Mana whispers to Akane.

Akane gives her a look as they approach the tree Cole is hiding in. "It's the only one we've got so shut up and get to talking." she whispers harshly.

Mana sighs as they stop in front of the tree. "Ah, excuse me!" she calls up, wincing when Cole's gaze snaps to her, cold green eyes looking back at her. "D-Don't be like that, we come in peace, see?" Mana says nervously, holding up her right hand and showing off the red Phoenix Fire emblem. "We're with Phoenix Fire!"

Cole's expression softens ever so slightly. He looks back to the group for a second and sighs before jumping down so he can speak to them properly. "Aberrant Hydra." Cole says, holding up his left hand and showing his red and gold outlined Aberrant Hydra emblem. "Aren't you people based on the other side of the country? What are you doing all the way down here?" he asks, crossing his arms.

"W-Well, uh, hi, I'm Mana and this is Akane. We're, um…" Mana trails off and glances meekly at Akane.

The older girl sighs and turns to Cole. "We were sent to stop you from doing something stupid." she says bluntly. "Are you going to make this easy on us or are you gonna put up a fight?"

Cole's expression instantly goes back to being cold. "If you're here for me then you should already know I'm not going back." he says. "Xander Break is responsible for the death of my parents and everyone I knew growing up. I'm not leaving without that man's head on a pike."

"You heard him, boys." Akane says. "The man isn't leaving peacefully."

Cole tenses. "What-?" he stops short when Emile free falls from the tree he was just on and lands right on top of him, sending him face first in the dirt.

"Gotcha! Now Veiss!" Emile yells as he struggles with Cole.

Veiss, back up in the tree Emile and Cole jumped from, nods. "Black Arms!"

Emile grins wildly at Cole when the man manages to turn himself over so they're face to face. "Hey, hon. Remember me?" he asks. His frown slowly drops when he sees the pendant attached to Cole's necklace. "A lion…" Emile trails off, a pensive look on his face for a moment. His eyes widen. "The Red Lion!" Emile gasps, a worried look crossing his face as he turns to his original partner in crime. "A-Akane, don't look! Scratch your part in the pl-!"

"Red Gauntlet!" Cole casts, igniting his fist in flames and punching Emile square in the face just as one of Veiss' black hands pulls him out from under Emile.

"E-Emi..le…?"

Mana turns to Akane, the sheer terror on her face surprising her.

"Well…" Emile starts, scratching the back of his head as he frowns. "It's, um, complicated." he says. "It's not my story to tell, but yes. She doesn't like using her Fire Magic." he answers. "She has no problem with others using Fire Magic or something like a campfire unless the situation is, er…" Emile trails off and goes silent, thinking for a moment. "Unless the environment of the situation reminds her of the reason she doesn't like her Magic." he finishes. "That's all I think I can say without offending Akane for telling everybody her business."

Damn it!

"Akane!" Mana calls, running over and grabbing the girl by her shoulders. She blocks Akane's view from the angry, fiery Cole.

Akane doesn't react. Her eyes are looking at Mana but they look like they're seeing something or someone else.

"Akane, it's okay, he's not an enemy, Cole is just ang-" Mana stops, cringing. Maybe 'angry' isn't the right word right now. "-he's...sad. About what Xander Break did to his family and village. He's not going to hurt you, okay?" Mana tries to comfort her. She smiles thankfully when some light returns to Akane's eyes. Mana unties the white jacket around Akane's waist and gently forces her to sit down against a tree. "Just take a breather." she says and throws the jacket over Akane's head.

"...You're such an idiot." Akane grumbles as she pulls her knees to her chest, nearly hiding the entire top half of her body under the jacket. "But...thank you."

Mana gasps dramatically. "My first thank you from Miss BDSM herself! I'll have to mark this day down to remember it for all time-"

"Which one of those fuckers taught you that word-?"

"RED GAUNTLET: MAXIMUM!" comes a frustrated Cole's voice.

Akane flinches beneath her jacket and covers her ears with her hands, mumbling something to herself over and over again. Mana grits her teeth and whips around, remembering the exact situation they're in. She watches as Cole's hands ignite in an even brighter, stronger fire than before.

Still dangling in the air from one of Veiss' black arms, Cole grabs the black chain Emile is struggling to tie him up with (a chain that Mana assumes came from Veiss). He's inches away from punching Emile again with his other fist but Veiss quickly pulls Emile to safety with his other black arm. Cole doesn't miss a beat and wraps the black chain he took from Emile around the wrist of the black arm holding him hostage, pulling on either end as hard as he can until he 'breaks' its wrist and he's clumsily dropped to the ground.

"Shit!" Veiss swears as Cole scrambles back onto his feet and runs into the forest. They all watch helplessly as Magic Seals form on each of his elbows and begin to expel streams of fire, increasing Cole's speed as he runs away. "Mana, after him!"

Mana blinks, "Wh-What!? Me!?"

"Yes you! During your training, weren't you bragging about blending in with the darkness at night? Well now's the time to put that skill into action!" Veiss says as Cole becomes a mere speck in the distance. He places Emile on the branch next to him and moves it to pick Mana up.

Mana pales as Veiss moves the black arm to dangle her over the forest. "W-Wait a second-" she stammers.

"No time. You can make yourself float with that Air Magic of yours, right? You can land safely."

"I SAID WAIT-"

"Bye!" Veiss says and flings Mana across the forest.

Victoria frowns as she sees a red and black blur fly over her and Saul let out a strange high pitched cry. "Did you hear that?" she asks him.

Saul frowns, also confused. "Yeah...anyways, what do you think's taking our supreme leader so long?"

"I don't-" Victoria stops short when the E.C.L. dangling from her ear starts humming. "Excuse me for a minute." she says, walking a little ways away from the group. Victoria activates her E.C.L. and takes in a deep breath, letting it out slowly. "Dear children, where in the world have you wandered off to?" she asks.

"Well you see, what had happened was…" Emile says and summarizes everything that happened between Victoria leaving them at the border and Veiss giving Mana the same treatment she gave Kenji. "...and now Akane is choking Veiss out with a chain."

Victoria facepalms, sighing. "And what about Mana? Has she gotten in contact with you yet?"

Emile smiles nervously as he dangles Mana's E.C.L. from his fingers. "Erm, it appears that her Earring Communications Lacrima fell off when Veiss tossed her over the forest." he says.

Behind him, Akane repeatedly slams Veiss' head against the ground since he'd broken free from her chain. "Are you stupid or do you just not care that you sent the least experienced member of this team into an area that Xander Break is more than likely wandering around in!?" she screams at him. "The very Guild Master of a Dark Guild that's known to have ties to the very people that took Mana and Mary away from their families! What the hell are you gonna do if they take her? She's not strong enough to fight him on her own and that moron in the bandages is too bloodthirsty to listen to reason!" Akane says angrily, her hair starting to sizzle.

Veiss grits his teeth as he pries Akane's hands off his shirt and struggles to keep her from wringing his neck. "It was the only logical decision! You were having a panic attack, Emile was still reeling from that punch and throwing him would've inevitably separated him and Novem which would've made the both of them upset, and while I can throw myself I can't throw myself that far! That's just not how that spell works!" he defends himself. "Besides, shouldn't you have more faith in the girl you're relying on to cure your trust issues?"

Akane grits her teeth and shoves Veiss back against the ground before getting off of him. "Her Magic ability has nothing to do with whether or not she can do that." she says, crossing her arms.

Veiss scoffs and picks himself up off the ground. "Whatever." he says. "Even if you don't, I have faith she can defend herself just fine. And besides, if Mana is really in trouble all she has to do is contact us with that Lacrima thing Victoria gave us-"

"Y-Yeah, about that." Emile pipes up, having finished his report to Victoria. He approaches the two of them slowly. "Mana won't be contacting us with the E.C.L." he says, sweating nervously when Akane looks at him sharply.

"And why the fuck not?" Akane asks.

Emile holds up the earring. "It fell off."

Akane lunges at Veiss again.

"Attention, Supreme Commander Venidestine has finally arrived!"

Victoria, Saul, and the other S-Class Mages watch as the Rune Knights stand to attention.

'Supreme Commander Venidestine', despite being nearly an hour late, saunters into the middle of the group looking like she doesn't have a care in the world. She smiles at the group.

"Hello everyone, my name is Anastasia Elsa Safinirina Venidestine - I know that's a mouthful so you can just call me Ace like my squad does." Ace introduces herself. "I'm sorry for being so late, I was finishing up the paperwork back with President LaVaughn. As of five minutes ago, I am the Grand General of Valiance's military; meaning I have near-complete authority over your country's military. That is until Revenant Beasts and all guilds who associate with them are dealt with…" Ace smiles sweetly. "...one way or another."

The hairs on the back of Victoria's neck stand up. Creepy.

Ace is a woman with wavy neck-length white hair. Bright orange eyes peek out from behind her bangs and stand out against her pale skin. She's an average sized woman, there's nothing too small or ridiculously proportioned about her. Ace is just a normal looking girl...a normal looking girl whose smile creeps the hell out of Victoria. Ace wears black tights under a black and white gradient skirt. She wears a sleeveless white collared shirt tucked into her skirt and has the jacket granted to her when she was promoted to the Supreme Commander rank draped over her shoulders: a black and gray military jacket with gold buttons, trimming, and epaulets.

Victoria isn't sure if she would believe that this girl is the highest possible rank a Rune Knight can be and the new Grand General of Valiance's military if Ace never opened her mouth. She looks harmless but the way she talks and smiles about possibly committing murder

"Now, I assume you're all aware of what you signed up for?" Ace questions, that same toothless smile on her face as she analyzes all fifteen faces in front of her. She stops in front of the five S-Class Mages, staring particularly intensely at the three that Victoria doesn't recognize. "You three." she says. "Leave."

"Wh-What?" the first one says. "Why?"

"I can see your Magic Power. It's nothing compared to theirs," she points to Victoria and Saul. "and it's nothing compared to my Rune Knights. In all honesty, I'm surprised you managed to earn an S-Class title. If we do indeed find Xander, you will die." Ace says bluntly and smiles. "Now shoo."

The other two look disappointed but begrudgingly agree and head back towards Soncha Kapa.

The first one, however, looks offended and angry. "Excuse me? Who the hell do you think you are?"

"Anastasia Elsa Safinirina Venidestine, Supreme Commander in the Rune Knights and Grand General of Valiance's military. Who are you?" Ace says without missing a beat and, of course, smiles.

The disgruntled S-Class Mage clenches their fist. "Requi-!"

"Celestial Dragon's Bright Fist." Ace's hand becomes alight in something brighter and hotter than she's ever seen Cole produce. In the blink of an eye, the would be aggressor is doubled over, kneeling on the ground in front of Ace. The golden light surrounding Ace's fist slowly goes out as she smiles down at the S-Class Mage. "Now, I won't arrest you for attempting to assault me for no good reason because I know I pissed you off so I'll give you one last chance: leave."

The S-Class Mage grumbles and stands up, giving Victoria a view of something she didn't notice before. The intense light Ace used to subdue them seems to have burned through the several layers of clothing the Mage was wearing. And without another word or look of contempt, the Mage heads back towards Soncha Kapa.

"A Dragon Slayer, huh…" Victoria mumbles under her breath.

"Now," Ace turns on her heel, smiling at Victoria and Saul. "I know all of the Rune Knights here with us tonight. What are your names?"

Meanwhile…

"Ow…" Mana whines when she crashlands face first into a tree.

You're fine. Mary says.

"Doesn't make it hurt any less." Mana grumbles, dusting herself off. "I tried to use my Air Magic like I did before but it didn't work." she says with a frown. "I don't know what I did wrong."

I don't know either. Maybe your body is becoming used to having a Mask focus its Magic? she suggests. And you know you look like you're talking to yourself right now, right?

Mana huffs. "I don't care. The only ones around should be Cole or some Dark Mages and I could care less if any of them thought I was crazy." she says and reaches up to touch her ear. "I'll call Victoria on - oh."

It fell off when Veiss threw you.

"Well damn." Mana sighs. "What do I do now? I don't know how to find Cole or find my way back to the others."

You could look around for bird Calypso. Or...

"What?"

You could search for Xander. Wherever he is, Cole is bound to show up eventually. I'm not saying you confront him, just...watch. Mary suggests. Become one with your Magic and blend in with the darkness or whatever.

Mana raises an eyebrow. "You think I can spy on one of the most notorious Dark Mages in modern Valiance history and not die?"

Well, it's certainly an idea. An idea I'm sensing you like.

Mana beams. "Of course I do! It's a good idea and if I actually succeed, Akane is bound to be impressed by that, right?" she says excitedly.

Uh, 'impressing' Akane isn't exactly the goal of your partnership-

"Maybe then she'll stop hissing at me when I try to hug her-"

If Mary had her own hands to facepalm with, she would. You know, I lament the fact that we had horrifying childhoods but I think I more so lament that you lost nine years of social and mental development. she sighs.

"Black Mask." Mana calls. "I wonder if-"

"I didn't think you would catch up to me that fast…"

Mana jumps, startled. "D-DARK SHIELD!" she stutters, putting her arms up in front of her and creating a solid dark red shield.

"Relax," comes the sound of Cole's familiar voice. "I'm...not going to hurt you." he sighs. "I'm sorry for the way I reacted before - and for scaring your friend. I saw how scared my fire made her, that's why I ran instead of continuing to fight you guys." Cole apologizes, awkwardly tugging at the bandages under his eyes. "But even so," he says and hardens his expression. "I won't go back with you. As much trouble as I know I'm going to get in with Master Glinda, I can't."

Mana bites her lip, her mind racing as she takes down her shield. What do I do what do I do what do I do? she repeats, the question cycling through her head over and over again.

That I can't help you with. Mary says, equally as unsure. As genuine as his intentions are, he's not supposed to be here and we came here to bring him back to Arkcester. she reminds Mana.

"I have to avenge my parents. What kind of son would I be if I didn't even try? They were my only family and he just took them from me. He took the lives of everyone in Markello, and for what? Power? Money?" Cole asks, clenching his fists. "I have to at least try," he repeats. "even if I go down fighting."

Mana stares at him silently, still unsure.

"I'm not asking you to help me, I don't want you to. Just…give me a chance to try." Cole begs.

Mana, are you sure?

Nope.

Mana nods and wordlessly gives her back to Cole.

"Mana?"

"I'm not watching you therefore I'm not accountable for your actions."

"...Thanks."

Mana watches as the entire surrounding area glows bright with Cole's fire and slowly dies down until the only light remaining comes from the moon. She turns around and Cole is gone.

Mana nods to herself and smiles. "So, good ol' Xander Break." she says. "Where do you think he is?"

I think there's a village on the other side of this forest. Didn't the request specify he was spotted north of Soncha Kapa or something like that?

"That it did, Mary dearest." Mana says and starts walking. Then, she stops. "...which way is north?"

Earlier, in Arkcester…

Nelio and Alistair groan as Glinda unceremoniously dumps them out of her portal and onto the front steps of Aberrant Hydra's base.

She glares down at them as the men pick themselves up off the ground, dusting themselves off. "Next time you try and ask me for a favor, don't threaten to report me to the Magic Council!" Glinda snaps and shuts the portal.

Alistair sighs. "You're an idiot."

Nelio shrugs. "Threats usually worked while I was in the military." he says nonchalantly. "So where do we go now?"

"I guess we're going to Soncha Kapa on foot."

"Okay-"

"Reonard? Reonard is that you?"

Nelio and Alistair turn toward the sound of the former's surname being called. Nelio's eyes widen slightly. "Captain Luster?"

Luna Luster beams as she approaches the duo, Yuki trailing behind her. "Reo!" she smiles. "I thought - I thought you were-" she stammers, excitement and joy making her tongue tied. "I-I - what happened to you? Why do you still look so young?"

Nelio looks down, a faraway look on his face. "I was found by a tribe of Machias before I could join the rest of my squad." he says. "They nursed me back to health. It took a long, long time and…" he looks back up, gesturing to himself. "This is the result."

Luna smiles sadly. "I'm glad to see that you're alive, at least. We thought everyone in the Retribution Squad was dead. You never reported back to Command when you recovered."

Nelio doesn't say anything.

Luna smiles again and grabs Nelio's left hand, tapping the silver Phoenix Fire mark on his hand. "I'm glad you found somewhere to belong again, Nelio." she says and slowly drops his hand back down. "I'll come see you next time I'm in Zaflior."

Luna moves to pass by him but Nelio stops her, grabbing her arm. "I-It wasn't your fault." he says. "I can't - I-I can't remember a lot - anything really - about what happened, b-but," he stammers, looking at her sincerely with unshed tears in his eyes. "It wasn't your fault."

"...Th-Thank you for that, Reo." Luna says quietly.

Nelio and Alistair bid their goodbyes to Luna and the silent Yuki and resume their walk.

"So," Alistair says. "Captain Luster."

Nelio nods. "One of the youngest Captains in Valiance history." he says. "Captain Luster was friends with the Captain of my squad so we worked together a lot." he explains.

"I see."

"I didn't know you could cry." Alistair says, smirking slightly.

"I didn't know you had another emotion besides 'I don't give a fuck about anything'." Nelio says, touching the dog tags around his neck.

"Touché."
