With a sulky expression and mewling, distressed noises, Kagome munched on the melon pan she'd bought from the school's cafeteria for lunch. Currently, she was sitting on the rooftop, not caring if the wind blew her hair in her face or lifted her skirt to indecent levels. Her mind kept replaying the awful moment that occurred twenty minutes ago, her mood darkening further and further.
Aomine felt his brow twitch as he continued to silently observe the gloomy girl. If it were possible, he swore a dark cloud would be hanging over her head, lightning crackling and thunder booming.
"What the hell happened to you?" he roughly asked, though he could guess. The melon pan gave it away. Kagome only ate the sweetened bread when her heart was in some sort of distress. Her obsession with it was almost as bad as oden.
Kagome's eyes watered at the corners, and Aomine almost – almost – turned around and ran. "That jerk broke up with me," she stated, her words thick with the sob she wanted to let escape. But she held it in, sniffling. "Why does this keep happening to me?"
The question was obviously rhetorical, not actually seeking an answer. Aomine gave her one anyway.
He sighed. "I'm sure it wasn't you—"
"Of course it must be me," she wailed, almost screaming at the top of her lungs. The tanned male jumped, startled by her outburst. He knew he should have run when he had the chance. "This is my third breakup in a span of two months, Daiki. There must be something wrong with me. Maybe I'm not smart enough!"
An anime-style sweat-drop appeared above his head. "Uh, you rank first in our class year," he hopelessly pointed out, knowing she wouldn't hear him. Why was he trying to comfort her? He was awful at this sort of thing. Where was Satsuki when he truly needed her?
"Or maybe I'm not athletic enough!"
Oh well, he might as well continue. His words wouldn't cause Kagome's upset to skyrocket any more than it already was. "You're on the archery team." He predicted she would make captain next year; she had the talent and the drive.
"I bet it's because I'm not pretty enough!"
Now wait just a minute. She did not just say that.
Aomine narrowed his eyes, teeth clenched. "What the hell, Kagome? Where did you get such a stupid idea?" His dark blue eyes narrowed further until they were angry slits. "Did that asshole say that when he broke up with you?" If he did, Aomine was going to hunt the little bastard down and beat him up.
Because Kagome Higurashi, in his opinion, was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. He had always thought so when they were kids. He, Satsuki, and Kagome had grown up together, but where he didn't feel the slightest bit attracted to Satsuki, his eyes had followed Kagome. With her silky raven tresses, smooth skin, amethyst eyes, and model-worthy figure, she embodied his ideal type of girl. Her sweet personality and fiery temper heated his blood like no one else could.
Kagome sniffled again, nibbling on the melon pan. "No," she sulkily muttered. "But what else could explain it? Things start off so great. Then it just goes downhill in a matter of a few weeks. The next thing I know, I'm getting my heart broken."
Aomine scratched the back of his head. How long would it take Satsuki to get here if he called her right now? He refused to do 'girl talk,' damn it. He shuddered at the mere thought.
"I don't freaking know," he finally settled on saying. With an exasperated exhale, he plopped down next to the raven haired beauty. "Maybe you should stop falling for guys so easily." Hell, she should stop dating, period, unless it was him.
Kagome released a sigh. "You're probably right, Daiki. I should be more like Satsuki – fall in love with one guy and stick with him for the rest of my life."
His expression turned deadpanned as he thought about Kuroko. "Yeah, do that." He highly doubted the phantom player even realized that Satsuki liked him despite the pink haired manager throwing herself at him every chance she got. His former basketball teammate and shadow was the most hopeless individual Aomine had ever met.
Taking another bite of her bread, emotions now stable, she commented, "But who should I fall for?" His eyebrow ticked. She wasn't serious, was she? She was going to 'choose' someone to fall in love with? "Hmm, maybe Kise? He is good-looking, and he's good at basketball. And I've known him since middle school."
"You have got to be kidding me," he sourly muttered, rolling his eyes.
"Then again," she continued, seemingly talking to herself. Aomine didn't see, however, how her amethyst orbs gleamed with wicked intentions. "There was that one basketball player from Seirin. What was his name again? Oh, right, Kagami. He's pretty impressive."
Aomine froze. Then he erupted, jumping to his feet to angrily glare at Kagome from his advantageous height.
"What the hell did you just say, Kagome?" he fairly roared. "Like hell I would ever let that Bakagami anywhere near you! I—"
He was abruptly silenced when Kagome placed the remaining melon pan into his open mouth, effectively cutting his rant short. The corner of his eye ticked, annoyed. Did she really just do what he thought she did?
"I'm just messing with you, Daiki," she teased, smiling sweetly. She watched for a moment while he viciously chewed on the sweetened bread. "Besides, if I'm going to fall in love with anyone, it would be with you. How does that sound?"
Aomine promptly choked. The last thing he expected to pop out of her mouth was that declaration. He coughed harshly, trying his best to clear his airway, though the flush on his cheeks was due mostly to embarrassment rather than his sudden lack of oxygen. He inwardly swore Kagome would be the death of him someday.
"W-What the hell, Kagome? When did you decide that?"
Her head tilted to the side innocently. Then she smiled. "It's a secret~"

Yesterday:
Hidden behind one of the school's pillars, Kagome felt her heart shatter more and more as she listened to her current boyfriend brag about what it was like dating her. Most girls would be thrilled that their guy was talking about them to his friends, but not when it made it seem like their girlfriend was only a piece of meat or property to be owned.
"So, what cup size is she? Be honest, dude!"
His voice was cocky and arrogant as he answered, "Definitely an E-cup. They just spill right out of my hands."
"No way! She let you touch them already? You two have only been dating for a couple of weeks," another voice commented, laughing raucously.
No. No, that wasn't true. Kagome squeezed her eyes shut as she softly, slowly shook her head. He hadn't touched her like that. She wasn't like that.
"How far have you two gone?"a fourth voice inquired, salivating over the juicy details. "I bet she's a real wild cat when the lights turn off. That's what they say about the typically sweet-looking ones, right?" The chuckle he released was dark and lascivious.
Kagome cupped her hands over her ears, not wanting to hear anymore but her feet wouldn't let her walk away. Her closed eyes tightened even more, wishing she was anywhere but there at the moment.
"I took her to a love hotel just yesterday after sch—"
"Hey, asshole."
Amethyst eyes popped open in surprise at the familiar voice interrupting the conversation. Cautiously, she took a peek around the pillar to verify her suspicions.
Aomine glared harshly at the small group of boys, though his main focus was on the bastard currently dating one of his childhood friends. He felt a moment's satisfaction when the little weasel swallowed thickly, obviously knowing who Aomine was and just how… violent… he could get when provoked.
The tanned male leaned closer, using his height and muscled form to his complete advantage in intimidation. The grin that crawled across his features was sharp and threatening. "If you know what's good for you, you're not gonna finish that sentence. It's bullshit anyway, and we both know it." His eyes slit with his seething fury. "And if you want to keep breathing, I suggest you break up with Kagome, and never even think about her again. Got that." The last wasn't a question.
After the other boy gave his acquiesce with a shaky nod, he and his friends scurried away, almost tripping over each other as they ran as fast as they could.
"Spineless cowards." Left unsatisfied, Aomine punched the wall with his glare still glued on his face. "Tch. I would never let anyone hurt Kagome. Over my dead body. I'll protect her no matter what." Scoffing once more, he turned away with his hands now shoved into his pockets. "Where the hell is she and Satsuki, anyway? It's time to go home." With a few more grumbles under his breath, he left to find the two girls.
From her hiding spot, Kagome placed a hand over her racing heart and she couldn't fight the heated feeling that entered her cheeks. Her expression, however, was soft.

Present:
Of course, she wouldn't admit to Aomine that she knew he had acted like her knight in shining armor. He would deny it, because that was the type of guy he was. So, instead, she chose to tease him a little. His flustered expression had always been cute, and she liked knocking him off balance whenever she could. His sheer arrogance was so inflated, it needed to be popped every once in a while.
"Hey, Daiki," she said, "let's go down to the cafeteria. I want another melon pan since you ate the last of mine."
"Whose fault is that?" he exclaimed, brow twitching. Did she not remember shoving it into his unwilling mouth herself? "I don't understand why you even like that stuff. It's too friggin' sweet."
"I have a feeling I won't be eating it for a very long time," she answered, smiling.
