Kagome hummed happily as she sat in front of her vanity mirror, brushing her raven colored tresses, amethyst orbs locked on the little calendar she kept to remind herself of the date and any important appointments she needed to keep. But there was one particular day she would never forget:

Her wedding anniversary.

In one week, it would be exactly one year since she and Akashi had tied the knot, becoming husband and wife. In that year's time, they had experienced the joys of being a newlywed couple, and also the obstacles they'd had to face as the rules of their relationship shifted. From merely dating, to being engaged, and finally being married, they had gone through it all.

However, the one thing that had not changed between them was the romance. Akashi was always attentive, always a gentleman. He had been that way since they had first started dating, and she didn't see that stopping anytime soon.

She could still remember their first date with crystal-clear clarity…

Flashback:

Dressed in an elegant dress and shiny jewels, her silky raven tresses lightly curled and styled to gently frame near-angelic features, Kagome couldn't stop the wonderment that entered her amethyst orbs as she gazed around the classy Italian restaurant Akashi had chosen for their first date. While she was used to such extravagance – thanks to her father's numerous business dealings – this would be the first time a boy of her choosing had taken her out. Needless to say, she was curious what he had planned and her body vibrated with anticipation.

Seijuro Akashi had a certain reputation. He was known as the Emperor of Rakuzan, a basketball prodigy, and a ruthless up-and-coming businessman. From what Kagome knew, he was handling the majority of his father's company while still maintaining top academic scores in school. He was as impressive on paper as he was in person, her eyes unable to stray from his handsome looks and imposing figure in a suit.

Would it be unseemly if she started drooling?

Akashi pulled her chair out for her. With a grateful look, she took her seat and he took his a second later.

Kagome cocked her head to the side, studying the redhead across from her. "So," she began, "I have to wonder why you suddenly asked me on a date."

The way he smiled was enigmatic. Bracing his elbows on the table, he laced his fingers together to create a cradle for his chin. "I have to wonder why you accepted my offer," he returned, his heterochromatic eyes gleaming with amusement.

"Curiosity," she answered, smiling. "You have a rather interesting reputation. And I don't mean about you being called an Emperor or your basketball skills."

Brow raised, he questioned, "Oh?"

"You've never shown interest in girls before, let alone dating. It makes me curious that I seem to be the exception."

Akashi chuckled. The sound was deep and rumbling, a little rusty, like he hadn't used his vocal chords for that reason for a long time. "As expected," he said, pride shining within his tone, "your reputation precedes you as well. Your ability to gather information and utilize it to your advantage is remarkable. Is there any wonder why you're the exception, as you say?"

At that, Kagome let a sly smirk cross her features.

Akashi had done his homework on the stunning raven haired beauty before he even approached her. She had a head for business, and was cunning enough to keep it and prosper. He knew one day he would need a wife who could stand by his side and someone he could produce an heir with. He had researched countless heiresses, but none had shined as brightly as Kagome Higurashi.

She could be as cut-throat as he was in the conference room. She maintained an information network that expanded all over the world. As a fellow high school student, she also had the highest grades, and was the captain of the Archery team. She was known as the Campus Empress. If that didn't make her the perfect fit for Akashi, he didn't know what else would.

The rest of dinner went smoothly, neither teen bringing up current business contracts or takeovers and instead got to know each other better. As first dates went, both thought it was going exactly as planned.

When dessert arrived, Kagome glanced at it with speculation. She had seen it before but had never personally tried it. She was a little surprised that Akashi would order it for them.

"It's called Mont Blanc," the redhead said, catching her attention. He smiled charmingly as he took a sip from his cup of Espresso. "Try it. This restaurant is known for this particular dessert. Its main ingredients are chestnuts and whipped cream."

Lifting a spoon, she took a delicate scoop and placed the morsel in her mouth. The semi-sweet and light taste instantly melted on her tongue, and she moaned with happiness. It was the perfect ending to a perfect evening.

"It's so good," she commented. "I'll have to remember to come back here and order this again."

Akashi smiled with satisfaction, watching his companion enjoy the dessert. Coming to a conclusion that would seal his entire future, he said, "You won't have to remember, Kagome. We can come back anytime you wish."

"We?" She blinked rapidly, shocked by his statement, though her cheeks flushed at the familiar way he used her first name. It was so… intimate.

"Yes," he answered, "we." The confidence that radiated from his facial expression stole her breath. But what had her heart fluttering was the way she could see true affection growing within his mismatched eyes.

She stood corrected. This was a perfect ending. Her perfect ending – and the beginning of something life-changing.

End of Flashback:

Kagome was brought out of her memories when Akashi's reflection appeared in her vanity mirror. Years later, the man was still devastatingly handsome and she swore her heart swooned anytime she saw him. Although she would never admit it out loud – especially to his face – she knew he felt the exact same way about her. It was only fair. It wouldn't be right if the attraction and love was one-way. They were equals in everything.

"Good morning," Akashi greeted. His lips curved into a small, affectionate smile reserved just for her.

"Good morning to you, too," she greeted back, playfully fluttering her eyelashes. She positively purred when he took her hairbrush and started brushing her raven colored tresses with smooth strokes. She absolutely adored it when he pampered her.

"What do you have planned for today?"

In a distracted voice, she answered, "Nothing too pressing. I have to go into the office to finalize some contracts. What about you?" She had kept her schedule light on purpose. This next week was too important. There was no way she was missing her wedding anniversary nor was she planning to be stressed due to work. She made sure her assistant was very aware that if a last-minute business trip popped up, Kagome would be very displeased. The poor girl's job may even be on the line, the raven haired beauty was that serious.

"I have some business in town to take care of," Akashi answered, keeping his focus on his task. "I would have sent Reo to take care of it, but it seems the client is being rather difficult and wants to speak to me personally." Reo Mibuchi was Akashi's personal assistant and long-time friend. The two had played on the same basketball team in high school, so they were familiar with the way the other worked and operated. Often times Akashi would send Reo to negotiate and finalize deals.

Kagome turned to face her husband, stopping his ministrations. Worry clouded her amethyst orbs. "You're not going on another business trip, though, right?" She knew which client he spoke of. The old man was the only one who wouldn't speak to Reo on Akashi's current list of takeovers. He was a traditionalist, and had made Akashi travel more than once to meet and talk. She hadn't particularly liked it when her husband had been away for three weeks, and she definitely would not like it if it happened again.

Akashi pressed a kiss to her forehead. "I'm hoping today will be the last. He cannot keep stalling," he reassured.

"I hope so, too," she cutely grumbled. "We have plans – important plans – in just one week."

He cocked his head to the side, brow raised. "Oh? What important plans are those?" he asked, dead serious. When Kagome opened her mouth to release a wordless exclamation, starting to stand with her tiny fists lightly beating at his chest, he laughed out loud.

Knowing he had tricked her, the raven haired beauty huffed and snatched the hairbrush out of his hold. She retook her seat, her hands starting to savagely run the brush through her hair to work off the frustration she felt.

"You're such a jerk, Sei-kun." She pouted.

The redhead continued chuckling. From behind, he wrapped his arms around her waist and laid a gentle kiss against her shoulder. "I will see you later, Kagome. I love you."

It was impossible to stay mad. Kagome turned around enough to peck him on the lips. "I love you, too, even when you're being an as—"

Akashi cut off the insult with another kiss, his amusement shining within his heterochromatic eyes. "I'll take you out to lunch as an apology for teasing you," he said. "I'll have Reo make the reservations and I'll text you the location. How does that sound?"

"Like you're groveling," she answered, sugary sweet.

"Not groveling. I'm just a confident enough man to know that I do not enjoy sleeping on the couch."

In response, Kagome couldn't help but release a tinkling laugh.

Five Days Before Their Anniversary

"I don't know about this, Akashi."

"Don't tell me you're backing out now."

"I'm just having some serious doubts."

"Doubts? Or are really that afraid of Kagome?"

"Of your wife? Yes. Yes, I am afraid of her. That woman could kill me while I'm asleep – and get away with it, too! She would probably use a rusty spoon just to be extra devious and to make the pain last as long as possible."

A scoff was heard. "She wouldn't use a rusty spoon."

"But you admit she would murder me in my sleep."

"… It's too late to change the plan now. You'll just have to sleep with one eye open for the next few days."

A sound of disgust was released. "You don't pay me enough for this."

"The amount I pay you is actually quite generous."

"Not when it concerns your wife and my impending death!"

There was a pause. "Perhaps you are right."

"Damn right I am."

Two Days Before Their Anniversary

His heart was somewhere lodged within his throat as he watched the sheer outrage that entered amethyst eyes. When her fists clenched, her knuckles becoming white with tension, he had to struggle to swallow down his nerves. And when she released a near-demonic growl, he knew his life was forfeit. He should just reach inside himself and yank his soul out as an offering to the pissed off Goddess before him. Surely she would be a little more merciful.

Reo nearly jumped out of his skin when she spoke.

"What. Did. You. Say?"

If he could be anywhere else, he would've pounced on the opportunity. Instead, he had to deal with the most dangerous woman in Japan – and all because his boss was too chicken shit to do this himself!

"U-Um," Reo stuttered, trying to force words past the lump in his throat. "A-Akashi is-is going to be aw-away for the next-next several days for-for business."

Kagome narrowed her eyes, a scowl painted across her beautiful features. "And why didn't you stop him from leaving?" she fairly roared.

"I-I'm sorry," he exclaimed, panic starting to bubble. "But it's that old man's fault, Kagome! He won't budge on anything unless Akashi meets with him personally to discuss the changes that had been made." He waved his hands in the air as a form of reassurance and to ward off any attack she may unleash. "Don't worry though! I'm sure Akashi will be back in time for your anniversary!"

"And if he's not?" she screamed, nearly hysterical with anger – and deep disappointment and hurt. It wasn't like Akashi to do this to her. He wouldn't have gone on such a trip knowing what the date was and how difficult the client could be. He would have held off on leaving until after their anniversary.

So, why hadn't he?

Day of Wedding Anniversary

Kagome opened the front door, sighing deeply at the thought of returning home to an empty house. She had spoken to Akashi earlier that day and was informed that it appeared as though he wouldn't be returning for another few days. Although he had apologized for missing their anniversary and promised to make it up to her, she couldn't fight off the depression it brought. It was their one year celebration of being married and all she had wanted to do was spend it with the guy she was going to live the rest of her life with.

Had that been too much to ask for?

Sighing again, she closed the door and turned on the light to illuminate the hallway. It was then she noticed the rose petals scattered on the carpet. Her brow rose. What in the world—?

Suddenly gasping, the raven haired beauty quickly followed the flower trail, a large smile starting to form on her face. Could it be? She hoped. It couldn't be anyone else.

"Sei-kun," she exclaimed, beaming happily. The moment she caught sight of him in their kitchen, she squealed and jumped into his arms excitedly.

Akashi caught her easily, lifting her effortlessly until she wrapped her legs comfortably around his middle. He grinned, her infectious mood bleeding into his own. "I'm home, Kagome," he softly said, eyes shining with affection.

She kissed him passionately, positively giddy that he was here, with her, on their wedding anniversary. "Sei-kun," she lovingly breathed out, still shocked that he was real and she wasn't hallucinating. "What are you doing here? You said you'd be gone for a few more days."

"You haven't figured it out yet, Kagome?" he lightly teased, rubbing their noses together. "I wanted to surprise you, so I made up the entire business trip. I had every intention of being home for our one year anniversary. I wouldn't have missed it for anything."

Kagome knew she should be at least a little upset by his trickery, but she was too happy to care at the moment. Maybe tomorrow she would remember to be mad. For now, she just wanted to celebrate with her husband.

She pressed her lips to his again. "I can't believe you tricked me again."

Akashi chuckled. Finally settling her back onto her feet, he grabbed one hand to guide her to their dining room table. "I have one more surprise for you," he said.

"You being home is enough, Sei-kun," she protested.

He shook his head. "I am a smart man, Kagome. I need to ensure that you don't take your revenge tomorrow when you're no longer high on happiness and love."

She couldn't fault his reasoning, so she didn't say anything more. He knew her so well.

Akashi pulled out her seat, reminiscent to their first date. She sat, and curiously watched as the redhead walked back into the kitchen. What was he up to now? She wondered.

When he returned, he held a plate with a specific dessert on it that had her eyes softening.

"A Mont Blanc," she murmured.

"Not just any Mont Blanc," he stated, smiling. He placed the offering in front of her. "I made this myself."

"You made it yourself?" she repeated, surprised. "When did you have the time to learn how to make it?"

He took his seat beside her before answering, "While I was away on my 'business trip.' I was actually working from Reo's apartment in case you stormed my office looking for me." He pecked her on the lips before she could protest his words. "Like I said, Kagome, I am a smart man. If I could make this anniversary memorable, you would completely forgive me for deceiving you."

She scrunched her nose cutely, though the playful gleam didn't leave her eyes. "I love you, Sei-kun."

In response, Akashi grabbed one of her hands and kissed the back of it. "I love you, too, Kagome." He gestured with his other hand to the dessert. "Try it."

She did, using a spoon to scoop a morsel into her mouth. She smiled. "It's perfect," she said.

The Next Morning

In bed and cuddled as close as she could get, Kagome thoughtfully said, "You know, Sei-kun, you really put poor Reo in a tough spot with your little game. I was fully prepared to murder him in his sleep when he told me you would be away."

Eyes closed, he casually asked, "With a rusty spoon?"

She scoffed, "I wouldn't have used a rusty spoon."

A smirk curved his lips upward. He leaned down just enough to kiss her forehead affectionately. "That's my girl," he said, pride coloring his tone.

"But you seriously need to give him a raise."

"I think I pay him generously," he pointed out.

Kagome gave Akashi a droll stare. "Do you pay him enough to deal with me when I'm planning his untimely death?"

"… Perhaps you are right."

She laid her head back down onto his chest, grumbling, "Damn right I am."

Akashi chuckled.
