Killua: Age 6, Kagome: Age 16

The moment he had stepped into the café, Kagome had instantly known he was different. With his silver-white hair, wide sapphire eyes, and pale skin, the little boy had stood out amongst the crowd that normally frequented the establishment. For one thing, he walked with an air of confidence not seen in kids his age. His eyes wandered everywhere, a gleam of excitement and caution within. He was obviously scanning for a potential enemy.

"Welcome," Kagome greeted, smiling sweetly. "Are you by yourself?" And why was that? Where were his parents? Shouldn't they be watching him? Or at least have an older sibling supervising him? A grandparent? Someone?

Anyone?

His expression was relatively blank. Only a spark of interest was within his eyes. He shoved his hands into his pockets and shrugged. "My dad dropped me off," he said. "He said I couldn't go home until I achieved my goal."

Her brow twitched. Couldn't go home? Dropped him off? More like abandoned him, she thought, lips thinning with displeasure. Her protective instincts were certainly flaring.

Instead, she kept her emotions in check and gestured to an empty booth. She kept her smile in place though it was a tad gentler. "I see. Would you like something to eat? My name is Kagome, by the way."

"Killua," he returned, smiling brightly now. He sat in the offered seat, legs swinging under the table in a childishly innocent manner. "I'm starving. What's good here?"

Kagome threw a playful wink. "I make an awesome cherry lime smoothie. You interested?"

"Yeah! That sounds amazing." Killua grinned.

"Coming right up." Reaching over, she ruffled his hair in a teasing manner. When he started spluttering and whining, she giggled before leaving to make him the promised beverage. "It'll just be a few minutes, okay, Killua?"

Pouting, he grudgingly replied, "Yeah, okay."

But the moment she wasn't within eyesight, a bright blush colored his normally pale cheeks. Slowly, his hand reached up until it cupped the area Kagome had previously touched. His eyes softened with an unknown emotion. But he knew one thing:

Her warmth lingered – and he liked it.

Killua: Age 8, Kagome: Age 18

Kagome placed the cherry lime smoothie in front of Killua, smiling at the young boy. Had it already been two years since the first time they met? It felt like yesterday. A wave of nostalgia crashed within her. She was tempted to reach over and just hug him. It wouldn't be the first time she'd done such a thing but she restrained herself. She knew it embarrassed him.

"You look quite proud of yourself, Killua," she said. "Did you win another match?" While she didn't approve of him participating in Heavens Arena, she understood his determination to reach his goal of the two-hundredth floor as was his father's requirement to return home. For the last two years, she had done her best to support him.

Killua chuckled, smiling hugely. "I did it, Kagome," he exclaimed, unable to keep the happiness from bubbling into his voice. "I did it – I reached the two-hundredth floor!"

"That's amazing," she cheered, clapping. "Congratulations!"

He bashfully yet arrogantly rubbed the back of his head. "Thanks."

A sudden realization hit her, and the raven haired beauty pouted. "But doesn't this mean you're going to leave? You've reached your goal and you get to go home, now, right?"

"Don't say it like that." Killua frowned. He'd been so excited about his advancement he hadn't fully considered what the result would mean. His expression brightened as he said, "There's no way I would forget about you, Kagome. So, don't worry! I'll definitely visit you whenever I'm nearby."

Kagome laughed. "You're so sweet, Killua. I won't forget you either," she promised. In a gesture that was now familiar, she ruffled his hair affectionately. And when he started grumbling and whining, she laughed again. "Whenever you stop by, I'll make you a cherry lime smoothie. Sound good?"

"Awesome," he cheered. Seeing the matter was settled, he grabbed the offered smoothie and took his first sip. He released a happy hum as the taste exploded on his tongue and gulped it down quickly.

The raven haired beauty giggled at the scene. While she would miss seeing Killua every day, she knew this wouldn't be the last. The bond they had formed during the last two years wouldn't be easily broken.

Killua: Age 12, Kagome: Age 22

Kicking up his skateboard and smiling at the familiar café, Killua entered the homey establishment and instantly scanned his surroundings for an equally familiar raven haired beauty. When he spotted her, his smile widened even more if possible.

A sense of warmth filled him whenever he was in her presence. In the beginning, it had been a foreign feeling, confusing, but, now, several years later, he took comfort in it. More and more, he'd sought her company.

More and more, he was able to identify his growing feelings for her. It had started as a childish longing to have someone who genuinely cared about him. From there, it had simply grown. At first, he had seen Kagome as an older sister. However, as time went on, he realized he wanted more. And perhaps it had always been that way, since the moment they had first met. He wasn't sure, but he didn't want to fight it. He wanted to hoard that feeling as close as possible. It was something just for him.

"Hey, Kagome," he greeted, grinning.

"Killua," she responded, smiling widely in return. "What a wonderful surprise. I didn't think I would see you again for another couple of weeks."

He gave a careless shrug. "Ah, something came up. I decided to stop by before passing through," he said. A flush colored his cheeks, and he softly muttered, "And I just wanted to see you."

"That's so sweet of you," she said. "Why don't you take your usual seat and I'll get started on your usual. Okay?"

Killua grumbled, "Not sweet," but took his seat in the booth. "Thanks, Kagome."

"You're welcome, Killua. I'll be right back."

While Kagome was preparing his cherry lime smoothie, he couldn't help but pout and continue to grumble about her treatment towards him. Although he liked having her undivided attention, he didn't appreciate being treated like a kid. How did he convince her to start seeing him as a man? As something other than a kid brother-figure?

Boyish features scrunched up, becoming frustrated. He was well aware that he was too young to be having these types of thoughts. He was only just beginning to notice girls. They had a ten-year age gap. How did one overcome such an obstacle?

Killua was still lost in thought when Kagome returned with his cold beverage. "Here you go!" she announced with a cheerful tone.

"How do I get you to see me as a man?" he suddenly burst out, not realizing he had shouted his words until it was too late. His face instantly exploded with color and he wished he could escape the situation he'd placed himself in.

Kagome's own cheeks were flushed, amethyst orbs wide and shocked, unsure how to react. "Um…?"

He slammed his hands on the table, flustered. "Look – Forget I said anything! Just ignore everything you heard, okay?" he continued to shout. He was beyond embarrassed. "That wasn't supposed to come out that way, damn it."

Hoping to ease the tension and his obvious embarrassment, the raven haired beauty gently ruffled his silver-white hair in a soothing gesture. His shoulders reflexively relaxed under the familiar treatment though it had the exact opposite effect on his cheeks. They flushed even more, becoming crimson.

"I'm flattered you feel that way about me, Killua," she said. His eyes immediately shot up to meet hers, surprised. She smiled sweetly. "You shouldn't apologize for how you feel or be embarrassed." She was silent for a moment, debating her next words, before plunging forward with pink cheeks. "Um… If you still feel the same way about me in a few more years… How about you confess to me again? Properly this time."

Killua stared at her with wide, sapphire eyes. "R-Really?"

Kagome could no longer meet his gaze. It was her turn to be embarrassed. What had come over her? Why had she said something like that?

"Y-Yeah," she answered. There was no going back.

Grinning, the young boy grabbed his smoothie and took his first drink. Releasing the straw, he chuckled out of sheer excitement. "Alright then! It's a promise." Determination shined within his eyes. There was no going back.

He turned those earnest eyes onto the raven haired beauty, vowing, "There are some things I want to do. I'm going to be gone for a while to take the Hunter Exam. I also plan on capturing every member of my family since they probably have high bounties on their heads. I don't know how long all of that is going to take, but I'll be back, Kagome. I'll come back and confess my feelings to you – properly, like you said." An arrogant smirk appeared on his boyish features. "So, don't miss me too much, okay? I'll still stop by if I'm in the area."

Kagome couldn't help but laugh. "I'll look forward to that day."

She didn't know what the future held for either of them. Their paths were leading in different directions. But she had a feeling Killua wouldn't let that continue for very long. When he set his mind to a goal, he was stubborn and tenacious. He would achieve it no matter how long it took.

She looked forward to the adventures that would unfold.
