Chapter 19 – Game

"Will you please stop pacing back and forth? You're starting to make me nervous as well."

"Sorry about that, Pandora. Also, I'm not nervous, just raring to go."

"Either way, it's distracting."

Such a conversation was taking place inside the Ryuugamine residence's living room between Pandora and Takeshi. The former was busy putting the finishing touches in a painting, while the latter had stopped pacing at Pandora's request and was sitting on the couch now. Both of them were waiting for midnight, when the Rating Game against Riser was set to start.

"Is that the mansion we were training in?" Takeshi said while peeking at Pandora's work. "It's a beautiful landscape, but the memories associated with it…actually, apart from the hellish training and studying at times, I can't say I had a bad time there now that I think about it. Far from it."

"The same holds true for me as well." Pandora said. "It was the first time in a long while when I actually felt in control of something in my life, that I made some progress in understanding and taming my power."

"That's great, Pandora." Takeshi smiled. "See, I told you that joining this group was for the best. You'll be a full-fledged Spirit Mage before long, and you will never again have to worry about your powers going out of control."

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves." Pandora said. "This was a first step, but the road ahead is long and hard. My cursed destiny may bare its fangs at all of you yet."

"If that happens, I'll break fate's fangs myself." Takeshi assured Pandora. "Whether it's you or me, I refuse to let our tales have a tragic ending. No, we'll be the ones deciding the ending of our stories this time."

"When you say it with such conviction…I can't help but believe it." Pandora smiled. "But first, we have to get past this hurdle. We can't let President be doomed to spend the rest of her life next to a man she despises."

"That's true." Takeshi said, gazing at the clock across him. "Thirty more minutes until we have to get to the clubroom. Good thing my parents are pulling all-nighters again. I'd hate having to put them to sleep or modify their memories with magic… However, I never thought we'd get to participate in a Rating Game so soon. How do you feel about this, Pandora?"

"A little nervous…and scared." Pandora admitted as she kept painting. "Scared that something might go wrong and I might hurt one of you. I've learned to exercise more control and I feel a little more confident, yes, but the doubts and fears haven't gone anywhere yet."

"I know that feeling well." Takeshi said. "But we can't allow our fear to drag us down. The moment we do, we've lost. So, let's try and stay positive and believe everything will work out. We have to at least be able to visualize victory before going on to claim it."

"This…isn't something that comes naturally to me…" Pandora said with a sigh, turning to Takeshi. "What about you, Takeshi? Is Grendel acting up or throwing a fit in there? Also, how's your body holding up?"

"He's been pretty docile after being bound." Takeshi said. "I'm sure that won't last long though, so I'm going to enjoy the peace and quiet for now. As for my body, everything's good on that front thanks to Koneko-chan's Senjutsu treatments. Thanks to them, I was able to practice with both Balance Breakers and finalize the feature I envisioned."

"Feature?" Pandora raised an eyebrow. "What feature?"

"Why, having Cataclysm Zone announce the names of the finishers as well!" Takeshi said with an enthusiastic expression. "Well, that and not have Dead Shore Advent shred my clothes every time I equip it, but more importantly, the finishers! It took a lot of hours of hard work, but I finally pulled it off!"

"Yes, clearly, it was time well spent."

Pandora said, directing a half-lidded gaze at Takeshi.

"It certainly was, my dear Pandora." Takeshi said with a faux haughty expression. "Because you see, winning alone isn't enough. You have to do it with style as well. Only then can you attain a perfect victory."

"No wonder Koneko-san calls you Chuuni Evil Dragon." Pandora shook her head in exasperation. "I wonder though…if I did something similar, could I understand your feelings better…? In any case, regarding Grendel's Balance Breaker, will you—"

"I'll manage." Takeshi said, cutting off Pandora. "It's not like I have much of a choice. If it comes down to it, this is probably my best bet against Riser."

"Even so…I don't want to see you suffer…"

"Don't worry." Takeshi smiled. "You know I'm quite durable and persistent. I'll be fine, I promise."

"You'd better."

Pandora said as she got back to her painting. As for Takeshi, he closed his eyes and leaned back on the couch, trying his best to relax until the appointed time.

Later, in the Occult Research Club…

The members of Rias's Peerage had gathered inside the clubroom at eleven thirty, counting the minutes until midnight. Rias was sitting on her desk with Akeno next to her. Both girls were sipping green tea with matching relaxed expressions on their faces. Yuuto was standing in the corner, wearing gauntlets and greaves, an intense expression on his face. Takeshi was sitting on one of the sofas, with Pandora sitting next to him. Koneko was seated on Takeshi's lap, wearing fingerless gloves and reading a book. When he had questioned her about her position, she had simply said 'my spot' before briefly nuzzling against him. That was enough for him to lie back and enjoy this.

"President, I have a question." Takeshi said. "That mysterious Bishop of yours, can't we use them in the game? One more person fighting alongside us would be a great help."

"Not in this case." Rias said. "That child has a powerful ability, but no control over it as of yet. As such, we are forbidden from bringing them along, and even if we could, their power could easily turn against us."

"I see. That's a shame."

Takeshi said as he fell silent once again. If Rias said that much, then it couldn't be helped. After five minutes of relative silence had passed like this, a knock was heard on the door.

"Who is it?"

"It's me, Sona. Can I come in, Rias?"

"Sona?" Rias frowned. "Of course, come on in."

The door opened, with Sona stepping inside, flanked by Tsubaki and Genshirou.

"Hello there, Rias, everyone." Sona said, glancing for a moment at Koneko sitting on Takeshi's lap before turning to Rias. "I've come to wish you good luck in the upcoming game."

"Thank you, Sona." Rias smiled. "I appreciate it. You and I always spoke about how our first Rating Game would be like, but I never thought my first one would decide my future…"

"Nevertheless, I'm certain you can overcome Riser and his Peerage." Sona said. "Grayfia-san is the one who's been training you after all, and you've taken full advantage of these ten days from what you've told me. You should be ready for almost anything now."

"We'd be even more ready and motivated if we had some sort of combat uniform." Takeshi complained. "Why don't we have combat uniforms again, President?"

"If my group is to have a uniform, it's only natural that it's Kuoh Academy's uniform." Rias said. "We are the members of the Occult Research Club after all."

"That's so dull…" Takeshi grumbled. "Akeno-san could have made us some really stunning outfits. That way, apart from beating Riser, we'd also look good while doing it."

"It can't be helped, Takeshi-kun." Akeno said. "We didn't have a lot of time left and Rias was quite adamant on using our school's uniform. Next time though, I'll see if I can come up with something a little more special."

"That would be great, Akeno-san."

"You sound confident, Ryuugamine." Genshirou remarked. "Think you can do it? Take down a High-class Devil like Riser Phenex?"

"It will be a challenge, but we've faced several dangerous situations so far and have come out on top in the end." Takeshi said. "We will pull this off as well without fail."

"In that case, we'll be looking forward to an exciting performance." Sona said. "Just like the Gremory and Phenex families, we'll be watching the game through the broadcast-type magic circle."

"It's not just us." Tsubaki added from the side. "From what we've heard, several noble families will be spectating as well. There are going to be a lot of eyes on you guys, and not all of them will be friendly. Rumors are flying around about bets being placed on the result of the match…and the odds aren't in your favor."

"Bets?" Takeshi perked up a bit. "Interesting. Is there any chance we might get in on that action as well?"

"Participants are forbidden from betting on the results of the battle, so tough luck, Takeshi." Rias smiled. "However, with so many influential people watching out there, this is a good chance for all of you. If you perform well and receive a favorable estimation, this could raise your chances for a promotion down the line."

"Somehow, I doubt my chances at least will be improved…"

Takeshi said with a self-deprecating smile, prompting Koneko to pat his head.

"It's a shame I couldn't offer you some of my servants to help." Sona said, an annoyed expression on her face. "Both families agreed that you shouldn't receive any outside assistance during the game, and no trading servants would be allowed until the game is finished."

"I expected that much, so I'm not surprised." Rias smirked. "They wouldn't want me bringing in a potentially powerful servant from one of my acquaintances and turn this match around. Still, it's the thought that counts."

"It's almost time." Sona said after glancing at the clock. "We should be off. Once again, good luck, Rias. Make sure to win this."

"I will." Rias nodded, a determined expression on her face. "Just sit tight and wait for the good news, Sona."

"Give them Hell out there, Ryuugamine." Genshirou said, raising his fist. "Show those arrogant High-class Devils why they shouldn't look down on us Reincarnated Devils."

"You got it, Saji-kun."

Takeshi grinned, bumping his fist with that of his fellow Pawn's. Once the three members of the Sitri Peerage took their leave, the Gremory Peerage's members once again sat in relative silence until ten minutes prior to midnight, when the large magic circle in the clubroom flared to life. The one who materialized there was Grayfia, her usual impassive expression on her face.

"It's almost time, Rias-sama, everyone." Grayfia said. "Are you ready?"

"As ready as we'll ever be."

Rias said as she and the others stood up.

"As you're well aware, in about ten minutes' time, you will be transported to the artificial battlefield prepared for this game." Grayfia said. "The pseudo-space is quite durable, so feel free to go all out without reserve. Also, be aware that apart from the two families and a large assortment of nobles, the Devil King Lucifer-sama will also be watching this game. Keep that in mind and don't show him an unsightly scene."

"Brother too, huh…?" Rias muttered. "So, the whole family will be there. That's perfect. This is a great chance to show everyone my strength."

"I've said my piece as a servant of the Gremory household." Grayfia said. "Next is my own words as your trainer. I believe you have a substantial chance to triumph against Riser-sama. However, do not become overconfident under any circumstances. A single misstep is all it takes to change a favorable situation into a disastrous one. Always be on your guard and assume nothing until everything's over."

"We will." Rias said. "Thank you, Grayfia. For everything."

"If you want to show me your gratitude, then win." Grayfia said, the hints of a smile on her face. "While I'm supposed to be impartial…I'll be cheering for you, everyone. Chiharu-san also sends her well-wishes. She cannot be here for the game, since the Youkai elders didn't allow it, but her thoughts will be with you. She also said that if you lose, there'll be Hell to pay, so keep that in mind as well."

"…Sounds like something she'd say." Koneko said. "I'll send her a message later. I'm sure she'll be anxious to hear about the result."

"Now then, move inside the magic circle." Grayfia said. "Once it transports you to the battlefield, you won't be able to use it again until the game ends."

The members of the Gremory Peerage nodded as they stepped inside the magic circle, whose symbol changed into an unfamiliar one. Takeshi assumed that was because it was a Rating Game-specific circle. After a few seconds, the light of teleportation engulfed them. Once the radiance died down, the group found themselves back at the clubroom.

"The teleportation failed…?" Takeshi muttered. "No, this is the battlefield, isn't it?"

"So it would seem."

Rias said. At that moment, the familiar voice of Grayfia echoed all around them.

[Hello, everyone. I am Grayfia, a maid from the House of Gremory, and today, I will be the arbiter of the Rating Game between the House of Gremory and the House of Phenex. In the name of my master, Sirzechs Lucifer-sama, I swear I will be judging this match in an impartial manner. By using both Rias-sama and Riser-sama's opinion as basis, we created this battlefield, which is a replica of the school which Rias-sama attends in the human world, Kuoh Academy.]

"Everything is an exact replica?" Pandora said, looking impressed as she glanced over the clubroom and looked out the window, checking the white sky above them. "Amazing… The Devils are quite ingenious."

"Not an exact replica." Takeshi frowned. "I don't remember the new school building being so far away. The distance between the buildings seems to have expanded somewhat."

"That's probably to give us some more room for maneuvering." Rias said. "Still, it's not like it changes the situation that much."

[The location where both teams were transported will be their base.] Grayfia continued. [Rias-sama's base would be the Occult Research Club's clubroom located in the old school building. Riser-sama's base would be the Student Council's room located in the new building. For the Pawns to use Promotion, please head to the enemy's base.]

Takeshi made sure to keep that location in mind. The Student Council's room was in the east corner of the highest floor in the new school building. Heading there while keeping the enemy Pawns out of the clubroom would be an important part of their strategy.

[Now then, it's time to commence the battle.] Grayfia said. [This match will continue until the time of dawn in the human world. Without further ado, the Game starts now.]

The school bell suddenly rang, its sound echoing throughout the battlefield.

"Here we go." Rias said. "First, it's communication. Akeno, if you would?"

"Of course." Akeno said, offering small earphone-like transceivers to every member. "Put these in your ears, everyone. We'll be using them to communicate with each other."

Once everyone had put the devices in their ears, Rias sat down on the sofa while Akeno started preparing tea.

"Our first priority is to take down as many of Riser's Pawns as possible." Rias said. "We cannot allow them to promote into Queen. If this happens, the difficulty of this match will go up substantially."

"You seem pretty calm, President." Takeshi noted while looking outside with narrowed eyes. "Aren't you afraid the enemy might gather most of their pieces and attack us in full force as soon as possible?"

"A blitz is possible, but unlikely." Rias said. "Riser knows that this whole school is our territory, and that we're familiar with its layout better than him. He won't risk falling into a trap or creating a fatal opening at the early stages of the game. No, he'll spread out his pieces evenly, capturing key positions to strengthen his defenses, before heading out to crush us."

"Our numerical inferiority is quite the issue." Akeno noted. "Under the rules of the game, if neither King has been 'captured' or declared a surrender once time runs out, the game's winner is decided by the number of pieces left in each side."

"This means that, as things stand, we're starting in a disadvantageous position." Pandora pointed out. "We have to go on the attack to close the gap, while also losing no-one from our side. If we act too aggressive though, it's possible we might fall into a trap."

"True, but our situation isn't as desperate as it might seem." Rias said. "Yuuto, bring out the map please."

"Yes."

Yuuto spread out a map of the school on the table, which was divided into grids with English alphabet letters and numbers on it. Takeshi assumed the map was designed like this to emulate a chessboard. Rias took out a pen and marked both Peerages' bases before speaking.

"There's a forest near our base." Rias said. "It's safe to assume that this is also our territory. In other words, the new school building would be Riser's territory. It's quite possible that there will be an ambush when you enter their territory. The school field is visible from the new school building, which means it's dangerous to pass through there."

"…We can't go through the sports ground either." Koneko said. "They'll be waiting for us."

"Most likely." Rias said. "It's a relatively open area, so I'd wager one of Riser's Knights and several Pawns will be stationed there at least. This much should be enough to control the sports ground. Still, we might have to go through there eventually, but it's best if we avoid it until we have trimmed down their numbers a bit."

"In that case, how about the gym?" Yuuto suggested. "If we capture it, we'll have a route to the new school building and secure our flank. Since it's a passage to both buildings, we could use it to restrain the enemy's movements."

"We could also use it as a trap." Takeshi said. "Such a location will be quite enticing to our opponent. However, chances are they've already acquired it, which means we'll need to push them out first."

"Yes, Riser won't allow us to grasp such an important location without a fight." Rias said. "Since it's a building, he'll probably prioritize strength over mobility. Therefore, we should expect a Rook and at least several Pawns there."

"Three to four pieces…" Takeshi said, rubbing his chin. "President, couldn't we just bring the building down on them or something? It's a good location, but taking out several enemy pieces in one fell swoop is more important. Plus, even if we capture it, it's going to be difficult to hold it with our members. Since we have the fewer numbers, remaining as mobile as possible is our best bet."

"I've been thinking the same thing." Rias said. "However, about the manner of the attack…well, one thing at a time. Yuuto, I need you to head out to the forest and start setting a few traps. Once you're done, mark them on the map and return back here. I'll make copies of the map and distribute them to everyone.

"Understood."

Yuuto bowed as he took the map and a strange-looking tool box before heading out. Rias then turned to her Queen.

"Akeno, I need you to start casting illusions and envelop the area around the forest in mist." Rias said. "Of course, make it so that the illusions react only to Riser's group. Once you're done, return here as well."

"Yes, President."

Akeno said as she spread her wings and took flight.

"Koneko, your Senjutsu will play an important role here as one of our trump cards." Rias said. "For the start of the game, I need you to move to the attic and use your heightened senses to grasp the positions of Riser's servants as much as possible. Devil magic and presence concealment won't be able to mask their ki. Reading their movements in real time will give us a big advantage when planning our next moves."

"…Understood." Koneko said. "I won't let you down, President."

Koneko then turned to Takeshi, an expectant look on her face. Takeshi chuckled as he leaned down a bit and kissed her.

"Do your best, Koneko-chan." Takeshi said. "We're depending on you."

"…Same." Koneko smiled. "We've got this, Senpai."

"Pandora, Takeshi, I'll leave the opening play to you two." Rias said to her two remaining servants. "Once we begin moving, I'm counting on you to start us off strong."

"We won't fail you, President." Pandora said. "I'll show you the results of my training."

"Trust me, Riser's servants will never see us coming." Takeshi gave Rias a thumbs-up while smiling. "Once they're down, their master is next. We'll win this for sure!"

"As always, you're so enthusiastic, Takeshi. I can't help but feel my spirits being lifted up."

Rias smiled as she got up from her desk and sat next to Takeshi. Then, she leaned on him, resting her head on his shoulder.

"Erm, President?" Takeshi said, feeling unsure about this. "Is there a problem?"

"No, I felt like getting a little more confidence, that's all." Rias said, entwining her hand with Takeshi's. "Can I stay like this for a while? Being like this next to you relaxes me…"

"If it makes you feel better, then sure." Takeshi said, squeezing Rias's hand. He couldn't help but notice she was trembling a bit. "Hey, there's no need to be anxious. Like I said, we will win this. I promise you, before the night ends, you'll be a free woman once again. Just believe in us, and in yourself."

"Koneko sure is lucky…" Rias muttered, leaning even closer to Takeshi. "I feel my fear and doubts washing away. Like I thought, finding you was a blessing, Takeshi."

"The feeling is mutual." Takeshi said. "I don't know where I'd be without you, President. I…"

Takeshi stopped himself as he was about to say 'I won't give you to someone like Riser', much to his confusion. Both of them were looking at each other with matching warm gazes. Takeshi felt as if his heart was racing a bit faster, something that had been occurring rather often when it came to Rias.

Is it possible…that for her…I…?

A dry cough from the side interrupted Takeshi's train of thought.

"President, Takeshi, as heartwarming as that scene is, don't get too carried away." Pandora said. "We're still in the middle of a game."

"Right…my apologies."

Rias said as she separated from Takeshi and stood up, going back to her desk. Takeshi thought he glimpsed a momentary look of envy in Pandora's face, but wasn't sure about it as her features quickly transformed into an impassive mask again.

"Now then, about your part in the plan." Rias said. "Pandora, Takeshi, when you two reach the gym, I need you to—"

Rias spent the next three minutes explaining the strategy to her Knight and Pawn. After some time had passed, Yuuto and Akeno returned to the clubroom. Upon receiving a message from Koneko, Rias nodded and stood up, with all servants following suit.

"Koneko's search perimeter has expanded until the gym." Rias said. "As we thought, there are four servants stationed there, though she can't discern their identities. Now then, first, I want you all to not overexert yourselves when fighting in the early and middle stages and move carefully. We need to conserve our energy for Riser and keep our capabilities hidden until the time is right for the decisive strike."

[Yes!]

Everyone said together.

"Takeshi, Pandora, the gym raid is up to you." Rias said. "Move as we discussed."

"Understood."

"Roger that."

"Yuuto, I need you to scout the area near the sports ground." Rias said. "Keep an eye on the opponents, try to ascertain their strength, and pick off any stray pieces that might wander in the forest. However, don't overextend yourself. If you feel the situation is unfavorable, don't hesitate to pull back."

"Yes."

"Akeno, your ability is also one of our important trump cards against Riser." Rias said as she turned to her Queen. "That's why, I'd like to keep it hidden for as long as possible, until the midgame at the very least. Since it still isn't easy for you to manipulate the power of lightning from what you've told me, use it only if you find yourself cornered. Apart from that, I need you on standby near Takeshi and Pandora's location. If the plan goes well, there will definitely be a response from Riser's team."

"Leave it to me, President."

"As for me, I'll be taking the field as well." Rias said. "I'll be close to Akeno in order to provide support if needed."

"Is that wise, President?" Takeshi asked with a frown. "The King is the most important piece here. If you fall into a trap and get taken out, it's game over for us."

"I know, but considering how outnumbered we are, I cannot afford to sit behind." Rias said. "We need as much manpower as we can on the field. Rest assured that I'll do my best to avoid getting taken down."

"Please do."

"As for you, Koneko, keep expanding your search area as much as possible in the meantime." Rias said. "Once the opening move is done, I'll be counting on you."

[…Yes, President.]

"Now then, my adorable servants, are you ready?" Rias said with a determined expression. "Our opponent is Riser Phenex, a member of the immortal House of Phenex with a promising career ahead of him. However, none of that matters! Let's blow him away with our full might!"

[Yes!]

All members present shouted together in an enthusiastic manner.

[It's begun at last.] Nidhogg said. [Shame that it's not a fight to the death though. Hardly as entertaining.]

[Tell me about it!] Grendel bellowed. [This farce is such a bore! No killing, no maiming, no sense of true terror as lives slip away! Well, at least the pain still remains!]

I'll be counting on you, my dear 'partners'. Takeshi thought, a small grin on his face. It's not like you have a say in the matter after all.

[But we can make this excruciating for you, and we will.]

[By all means, use our power! And be destroyed by it, both in body and soul!]

Takeshi tuned out the cackling Evil Dragons as he, Yuuto and Pandora moved into the forest, using a small amount of demonic power to kill the sound of their footsteps. Akeno had taken flight, while Rias had entered the forest from a different direction.

"This is where we part ways." Yuuto said while the three Devils were en route to the gym, conjuring two Demonic Swords and handing them over to Takeshi and Pandora. "Use these like we discussed. You only need to pour a small amount of demonic power in them to activate their abilties."

"Thanks, Yuuto." Takeshi said. "Be careful out there."

"Good luck, Kiba-san."

"Same to you, Pandora-san, Takeshi-kun." Yuuto said. "I'll be waiting ahead."

After Yuuto split up from them, Takeshi and Pandora nodded at each other before heading towards the gym once again. Since they couldn't use the front entrance, which was visible from the school building, they went towards the back door. Instead of heading inside through, they hid in the nearby foliage. Holding out the borrowed swords, they channeled demonic power into them, with two duplicates of themselves materializing in front of them.

"Now these are some realistic illusions." Takeshi remarked. "As expected from our resident Swiss Army knife man. So, what's the verdict, Pandora? Can you do it?"

"Yes, it should be possible." Pandora said. "Although it's a processed construct, there are a few earth Spirits present in the building. Can you handle my illusory copy as well though? I need to concentrate on controlling them."

"No problem."

Takeshi said as he materialized Cataclysm Zone and Mayhem Striker, using an ash construct to open the door. Taking Pandora's sword, he had the copies enter the gym. At the same time, he synchronized his senses with that of his copy in order to see and hear what it did. Next to him, Pandora had closed her eyes, with several glowing orbs surrounding her.

[We know you're there, servants of Gremory! We saw you coming inside! Step out of the shadows and face us!]

Hearing that declaration through his copy, Takeshi smirked as he made the copies move forward. He saw four girls standing in the court, the Rook Xuelan and the Pawns Ile, Nel and Mira. Riser's servants dropped into their combat stances, with Ile and Nel pulling out two chainsaws and turning them on.

[Disassembling time~!]

[Into pieces~!]

At that time, a small rumble came from the direction of the gym. Glancing at Pandora, Takeshi returned his attention back to the four girls in the gym, he noticed that Mira was frowning.

[Something's wrong, everyone…] Mira said. [They're not moving at all, and the feeling of their demonic power is very odd.]

[This is… Don't tell me!]

Xuelan shouted out in alarm, but was too late as numerous creaking and breaking sounds came from the gym. The next moment, the entire building started collapsing, with numerous debris falling around the four girls. Wasting no time, they rushed to the exit, only to be pelted by a rain of ash bullets upon stepping outside.

"What the—!?"

Xuelan didn't even have time to complete her sentence as Pandora and Takeshi pounced on the four girls. With two quick strokes of his axe, Takeshi shattered the twins' chainsaws, while four ash claws broke Mira's staff and bound her. His demonic power-clad kicks sent Ile and Nel flying and crashing into the debris, falling unconscious as the light of retirement enveloped them.

[Riser Phenex-sama's two Pawns, retired.]

Grayfia's voice echoed across the battlefield as she announced the retirement.

"Damn it!"

Xuelan cursed while shooting fireballs at Pandora. The Knight evaded them with her superior speed, manipulating the earth Spirits in order to have a large number of debris envelop her left hand, forming a giant arm. Xuelan's attempt to dodge the incoming attack was foiled by a small hole that opened up behind her, causing her to stumble. Pandora slammed the arm on her opponent, knocking her out.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Rook, retired.]

Wasting no time, Pandora headed for the writhing Mira and grabbed her head, forcing her to look at her glowing eyes.

"Obey my commands." Pandora said. "Tell us your master's plan."

"N-Never!"

Mira shouted in a shaky voice. Pandora sighed, letting go of the Pawn's head.

"Just like President guessed, they've taken countermeasures against my Charm." Pandora said. "In that case…I'll give you Hell! Hell 2 U!"

Pandora snapped her fingers as several glowing red orbs surrounded her. Then, a large conflagration erupted, consuming Mira's body.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Pawn, retired.]

"…As I thought, I don't get it at all." Pandora said while frowning. "The feeling of enthusiasm when mimicking favorite characters…it's not there."

"It's an acquired habit." Takeshi said. "I'm sure you'll come around at some point. More importantly, the first step was successful. Can you hear me, President? Both the gym and Riser's servants are down as planned."

[Great job, Takeshi, Pandora!] Rias's voice came from the transceiver. [This is a good start, but it means the opponent will also start getting serious now. Regroup with Yuuto near the sports ground.]

"Will do."

[…Be careful.] Koneko's voice was heard, an urgent tone in her voice. [Three people are approaching Takeshi-senpai and Pandora-senpai from the sky. They'll be upon you in seconds!]

Takeshi and Pandora wasted no time, rushing into the forest with all the speed they could muster. A couple of seconds later, a large explosion engulfed the area they were standing on, turning it into a smoking crater.

"No retirement announcement…which means I missed them." Yubelluna, who was hovering above the destroyed gym, clicked her tongue in irritation as she turned to the two girls next to her. "Marion, Burent, we're going after them. Stay close to me and—"

"Ara, ara, leaving so soon? I haven't even offered my greetings yet!"

A large thunderbolt came at the three girls from their backs. Although Yubelluna and Marion avoided it, Burent was too slow and received its full force head-on.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Pawn, retired.]

Once Burent vanished from the battlefield, Yubelluna turned towards the direction of the attack, an annoyed expression on her face.

"Priestess of Thunder…"

Hovering a few meters away from Riser's servants was Akeno, her usual playful smile on her face.

"Hello there, Bomb Queen-san, Riser's Pawn-san." Akeno said, making a small bow. "I've been looking forward to this encounter. For the sake of my master, I need you to disappear from this battlefield!"

Akeno shot two more thunderbolts at Yubelluna. Riser's Queen formed a defensive magic circle to shield herself and Marion, countering with several explosion spells. Marion added her own demonic power blasts to support Yubelluna. Calling upon her Knight trait, Akeno slipped through the explosions and attacks with her enhanced speed, aiming another thunderbolt at Yubelluna. She created another defensive magic circle, but before it struck, the thunderbolt curved mid-flight, hitting Marion next to her instead and dealing a lot of damage. Before Yubelluna could react, Akeno dashed in front of the injured Marion, sending her crashing to the ground with a well-placed kick.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Pawn, retired.]

"I see." Yubelluna said, a cramped smile on her face. "I had heard the Priestess of Thunder was a Queen that specialized in demonic power like me, but it appears that's no longer the case. You, just what training did you do over the past ten days?"

"A very thorough one." Akeno said with a sly smirk. "I hope you don't mind it if I demonstrate its results on your body, ufufu~."

"Aren't you confident." Yubelluna smirked. "However, we also practiced a lot over the past ten days. You won't find us easy prey, and there's no chance in Hell you're beating Riser-sama!"

Yubelluna raised her hand, creating several orbs of demonic power and shooting them at Akeno. The raven-haired girl countered with a barrage of thunderbolts, shooting down most of the incoming projectiles and evading the rest. However, the ones that missed her suddenly exploded all around her, with the ensuing shockwave throwing her off-balance. Yubelluna didn't miss this chance, creating a large explosion in front of her that engulfed Akeno. However, she had channeled her Rook trait and enveloped her body in demonic power, mitigating the damage. Still, her uniform was torn in various place and small burns could be seen throughout her body.

Focusing her demonic power with the Bishop trait, Akeno created a large thunder whip and starting swinging it at Yubelluna. She grimaced as she erected several magic circles to shield herself, only for the whip to break through them, striking her leg. Yubelluna screamed as she felt a current going through her body, causing it to go numb. Akeno closed the distance, aiming a punch at her opponent. Forcing herself to focus, Yubelluna created a short-range teleportation magic circle, evading Akeno's charge and appearing a few meters behind her.

"Ara, ara, I won't let you escape!"

Akeno shot a large number of fireballs at Yubelluna, who dodged them in a rush. Before she could focus, the thunder whip came at her once again. Instead of trying to shield herself, Yubelluna generated a large explosion in front of her, using the shockwave to propel herself backwards.

"How about this then!?"

Clasping her hands together, Yubelluna shouted as she created a large tornado, sending it at her opponent. Akeno countered by creating a tornado of her own, but failed to notice the several orbs of demonic power hidden within it. A massive explosion rocked the area, blowing Akeno back and sending her crashing through several trees. She grimaced as she stood up, only to see a barrage of demonic power bullets heading towards her again.

"I won't allow that!"

Forming a thunder whip in each hand, Akeno swatted away all bullets before aiming at Yubelluna. Riser's Queen fortified herself with several defensive magic circles and her Rook trait, but Akeno's whips tore though them again, shocking Yubelluna as she screamed. However, she managed to prevent her battered and smoking body from falling on the ground.

"You've got good endurance, but this is the end." Akeno said. "This match is mine."

"Don't be…so sure." Yubelluna smirked as she took out a small vial from a magic circle. "Our team still has this after all!"

Opening the vial, Yubelluna drank it. The next moment, all her injuries vanished, leaving her body in pristine condition.

"That's better." Yubelluna let out a relieved sigh as she flexed her arms. "What do you say, Priestess of Thunder? Ready for round two? Though seeing as you aren't at your peak capacity, you don't stand a chance against me as things stand."

"While I would love to prove you wrong, I'm afraid I can't waste any more time with you." Akeno smiled. "That's why, it's time for you to exit the stage, Yubelluna-san!"

No sooner had Akeno finished speaking than a crimson bolt shot out from the forest below, striking her left wing. Yubelluna gasped in shock as said wing stopped working, causing her to lose her balance and start freefalling. While she managed to stabilize herself by using magic, she was too flustered and too slow to avoid the pitch-black arrow that followed next. The condensed Power of Destruction enveloped her body, with Yubelluna barely managing a shriek before the retiring system teleported her body away.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Queen, retired.]

Following Grayfia's announcement, Rias emerged from her hiding spot in the forest and flew towards Akeno, a bow made out of Destruction in her left hand.

"Nice timing, President." Akeno said, eyeing her bow. "Also, nice style. I thought you hadn't mastered condensing the Power of Destruction and shape manipulation yet."

"I haven't, but I can manage this much at least." Rias said, dismissing the bow. "Thanks to it, we were able to take down the Queen."

"How come I didn't sense your demonic power?" Akeno asked. "You said you would be nearby, but I couldn't tell where. I was afraid you might have been caught up in my battle with the Queen."

"I used Lock Control to seal a large portion of my demonic power until around the middle part of your battle." Rias explained. "It was risky, but thanks to it, I remained undetectable until the right moment."

"Risky is an understatement…" Akeno shook her head in exasperation. "So, what's our next move, President?"

"With the Queen's loss, the scales are tilting to our side, but we can't afford to grow overconfident." Rias said as she placed her hand near her ear. "Koneko, give me a status report."

[…Takeshi-senpai, Yuuto-senpai and Pandora-senpai are at the sports grounds and have begun fighting against Riser's remaining servants.] Koneko said. [From what I can tell, Riser is still in the new school building.]

"In that case, here's what we'll do." Rias said. "Akeno, you head to the sports grounds to support the others. As for me, I'll accompany you until we're close to the sports grounds. There, I will use Castling to change positions with Koneko. While I'd love to fight alongside you…I need some time to rest after using Lock Control twice in a row. It's still a bit too much for me…"

"There's no need to act so mortified, President." Akeno said. "Nor is there any need for you to push yourself at this stage. Get some rest and rejoin us when you're ready."

[…What Akeno-senpai said.] Koneko said. [We'll send the rest of Riser's servants flying.]

"Sorry, and thank you. I'm counting on you, everyone."

Rias said with a smile as she and Akeno flew towards the sports grounds.

A few minutes back…

"You think Akeno-san will be alright, Takeshi? That Queen is no pushover."

"Neither is Akeno-san. I'm sure she'll handle the Bomb Queen without any problems. Let's just focus on our part."

Takeshi said as he and Pandora were making their way through the forest, heading for the school's sports grounds. Although they were moving as fast as they could, they also made sure to remain alert and watch their surroundings. Falling into a trap and getting taken out at this point would be disastrous, especially since their plan necessitated most of them surviving in order to band together against Riser and take him down.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Pawn, retired.]

"Looks like Akeno-san took down the other Pawn that was together with Riser's Queen." Takeshi smiled. "Now it's six versus eleven."

"Not ideal, but still better than the odds we started with." Pandora remarked, and then frowned. "…Someone's here."

Both youths tensed, but relaxed immediately once they caught sight of Yuuto sitting in a tree branch almost above them. Yuuto jumped down and landed next to them.

"Yo, Takeshi-kun, Pandora-san." Yuuto greeted his comrades. "I heard the gym raid was a success. Everything's going well so far for us."

"For now, it does." Takeshi said. "What about you? Judging from the lack of retirement announcements, you didn't run into any enemies here, did you?"

"Not directly." Yuuto said as the group started moving again. "I tried to probe their defenses, but the one in charge of the servants in the sports grounds didn't respond to my provocations. I launched several Blast Ogres at them along with other swords, but the enemy destroyed them all before I could set anything up. I also tried to peer into the enemy from a distance, but they've set up wards to counter surveillance."

"I wonder if our eyes back in base have anything more to say." Takeshi said. "What about it, Koneko? Got any additional intel for us?"

[…It's hard to tell from this distance…but there are several life signatures there.] Koneko said. [It's possible the rest of Riser's Peerage is there.]

"Have they abandoned any attempts to come at us and are inviting us in instead by creating a solid defensive formation?" Pandora frowned as the trio arrived at the storage room next to the court. "This could be problematic. Can't we circumvent the sports grounds and aim for the school building?"

"We could…but it would serve no purpose." Yuuto said while narrowing his eyes, struggling to pick up any traces of the enemy from the court. "Taking down Riser's servants first is still the priority."

"So, what do we do next?" Takeshi asked. "Charge in there with guns blazing and hope for the best?"

"I was thinking we could try something a little more sophisticated than that." Yuuto said with a lopsided smile. "Perhaps use Hollow Shade again to create more illusions and—"

Yuuto stopped talking all of a sudden upon noticing movement in the sports court. One of Riser's servants had appeared in the middle of the field, her sword at the ready. Taking a closer look, Takeshi identified her as one of Riser's Knights, Karlamine.

"I know you're there, servants of Gremory!" Karlamine shouted. "I'm the Knight of Riser-sama, Karlamine! I've become bored of trying to sniff through each other's strategy! Rias Gremory's servants, I challenge you to a duel!"

The three youths looked at each other, a mix of confusion and weariness in their faces.

"She can't be serious, can she?" Pandora said. "This has 'trap' written all over it."

"Maybe…though her intent could be genuine." Yuuto said while frowning. "Perhaps we should—"

"—blast that unguarded fool? You got it!"

Takeshi said as he pointed Mayhem Striker at Karlamine. A large number of ash blades shot out of it, with Takeshi adding several fireballs to the mix. Karlamine cried out in alarm, using her speed to evade the incoming attacks and her sword to deflect the rest. Just as it seemed that some of the ash claws would skewer her, a wind blast from behind her blew them away.

"Cowards!" Karlamine shouted. "You dare attempt a sneak attack while someone challenges you from the front!? You are a disgrace to all warriors!"

"Tch, it failed." Takeshi clicked his tongue, ignoring Karlamine's outburst. "No choice then, we'll do this the hard way."

"Was that really necessary, Takeshi-kun?"

"You bet it was." Takeshi said. "You remember what Grayfia-san said, no? Pragmatism above all else. Leave the Knightly honor stuff for occasions we can afford it."

"Guess you have a point."

"Heads up, boys! Here they come!"

Following Pandora's warning, she Takeshi and Yuuto jumped out of the way as a large fireball struck the storage shed, with the ensuing explosion turning it into molten slag. Looking towards the direction of the attack, Takeshi noticed that the rest of Riser's Peerage had assembled there. His two Knights, his remaining Rook, his three Pawns and his two Bishops were glaring at the Gremory Peerage with evident hostility.

"This is a good situation." Ravel said, stepping forward. "Once Yubelluna takes down the Priestess of Thunder and you three fall, Rias-sama will be driven into a corner and will have no choice but to resign. You did alright so far, but Phenex is absolute. Victory had been decided from the start."

"You're right about one thing at least." Takeshi grinned. "One question before with start though. You are Riser's sister, right?"

"That's right." Ravel said. "What about it, Evil Dragon User?"

"Then that guy is an even greater pervert than I thought." Takeshi said. "I mean, making your little sister a part of your harem? Sounds like something straight out of a second-rate porn flick. I know the Underworld has different customs, but I didn't know it was that loose when it comes to brother and sister having 'that' relationship."

"H-Hey, what the Hell are you implying, you impudent Low-class Devil!? Ravel screeched, flames shooting out of her hands. "I'll have you know nothing of…that sort goes between me and my brother! I joined him only as a means to gather more experience! Sheesh, that's why I hate lowborn men! Their mind is always in the gutter!"

"As opposed to your highborn brother, who's a model of virtue and restraint." Takeshi snorted. "On an unrelated note, time for all of you to be eradicated without fail!"

Takeshi raised Mayhem Striker once again, shooting several crescent-shaped ash blades at Riser's Peerage. Ravel raised her hand, shooting several blasts of compressed air to disperse the ashes once again.

"Siris, Karlamine, focus on the Knights!" Ravel ordered them. "The rest of you, aim for the Evil Dragon User! He's the most dangerous and unpredictable factor here!"

Following Ravel's commands, Siris and Karlamine dashed forward, aiming for Yuuto and Pandora respectively. Meanwhile, Ravel and Mihae aimed several blasts of demonic power at Takeshi, with the latter forming an ash shield to defend himself. Under their comrades' covering fire, Isabela, Shuriya, Ni and Li approached Takeshi, aiming punches and kicks at him.

Slipping between their attacks, he slashed at them, but magic circles appeared underneath them, teleporting them a few steps away from Takeshi. He tried to form several ash stakes, but Ravel used her wind magic once again to blow them away while also chucking fireballs at him, with the rest of the melee specialists remaining just outside of his axe's range.

"In that case…!"

Unwilling to use his Balance Breaker here unless it was necessary, Takeshi aimed for Siris and Karlamine instead, shooting several spinning icicles at the Knights, who were forced to dodge. No longer occupied with his opponent, Yuuto pointed his blade downwards. A large number of Demonic Swords erupted from the ground around Takeshi and forced Riser's charging servants to change course abruptly, only to receive several crescent-shaped wind blasts courtesy of Pandora. Isabela stood in front of the others to shield them, with the blades opening small gashes on her body. As the three members of the Gremory group stood next to each other, Grayfia's voice echoed throughout the battlefield.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Queen, retired.]

"What!?" Ravel cried out in alarm. "It can't be…Yubelluna lost!?"

"Where are you all looking at!?"

Pandora shouted, wind Spirits enveloping her body and two ice blades in her hand as she shot forward. The panicked Shuriya, who was in Pandora's way, took out a pair of daggers in haste, but was too slow as Rias's Knight slashed through her with the light of retirement enveloping her.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Pawn, retired.]

Wasting no time, Pandora started dashing from one end of the court to the other, launching an assortment of elemental attacks to disrupt the Phenex Peerage's formation. More often than not, Ravel would have to stand in front of the Peerage members and receive the attacks to shield them. Although her injuries would recover almost instantly thanks to her clan trait, the members of the Gremory Peerage were certain all this damage was taking a toll on her slowly, but surely.

"Yuuto!"

"Right!"

Nodding at each other, Takeshi and Yuuto charged at Riser's two Knights. Siris clashed her massive blade against Takeshi's axe, while Karlamine swung her two swords, releasing a torrent of flames and wind at Yuuto. Giving a mental command, Takeshi formed a platform of ashes underneath Yuuto, sending him flying towards Karlamine. At the same time, a Demonic Sword appeared next to Takeshi. Grabbing it with his free hand, Takeshi used it to generate a blinding light that dazed Siris.

Kicking her away, he threw his axe at Yuuto, who, sensing the incoming weapon, dropped to his knees. The axe struck Karlamine's blades, knocking one off her hand and sending her skidding backwards. Calling the axe back, Takeshi and Yuuto swung their weapons, unleashing waves of ashes and demonic power respectively that enveloped Karlamine, who had lost her balance, and inflicted grave damage on her as the light of retirement enveloped her.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Knight, retired.]

"You bastards!"

Siris attempted to strike at Takeshi's unprotected back. He didn't move from his place as Yuuto conjured and shot several Blast Ogres that went past him, striking Siris's weapon and exploding.

"We're not done!"

Channeling his demonic power in his voice, Takeshi blasted Siris with a high-pitched aria, causing her sword to crack and blood to come out from her ears as she screamed again from the agony. Yuuto didn't waste this chance as several Demonic Swords erupted from the ground around Siris, piercing her body in several spots, with the Knight losing consciousness as she was teleported away as well.

[Riser Phenex-sama's Knight, retired.]

"Blast it…!" Ravel cursed, beads of sweat running down her face as she aimed fireball after fireball at the Gremory group's members. "At this rate…!"

Seeking to take advantage of Ravel's distracted state, Pandora aimed at her, only to wince as she felt her control slipping. The sealing formula had been almost completely eroded, and the curse was starting to interfere, forcing her to cease using her Spirit magic. Mihae aimed a blast of demonic power at the defenseless Pandora, only for a thunderbolt from above to intercept it midflight, causing a large explosion.

"Akeno-san!"

Takeshi let out a wide smile as Akeno descended from the sky next to him. He noted that she had received some damage, but nothing too serious.

"…I'm here too."

Koneko said as she landed on the sports field, her Nekomata features visible as she aimed several ki blasts at Ni and Li, who scurried out of the way.

"A fellow Nekomata, Ni?"

"No, she appears to be somewhat different from us, Li."

"It doesn't matter. She's still going down!"

The Pawn twins aimed for Koneko, who dropped into a stance. Takeshi rushed to her side, a scythe-like ash blade having formed around Mayhem Striker's head. The two of them started fighting against the two Pawns, forcing them to fall back. Ni and Li aimed their punches at Takeshi, only for him to catch them in his axe's handle and push them back.

Using Takeshi as a foothold, Koneko jumped at the two Pawns, her Touki-enveloped punch opening a large crater on the field. Takeshi followed up with several spinning ash spears aimed at the two. Seeing their predicament, Ravel enveloped them in a wind barrier, only to almost receive a large thunderbolt courtesy of Akeno.

"Ara, ara, you shouldn't get too distracted, Ravel-san."

"Mind…your own…business!"

Ravel heaved, shooting a large fireball at Akeno, followed by several wind bombs. Akeno scattered the incoming attacks with her thunder whip and swung it down, slashing Ravel's arm. The Phenex girl shrieked as the regeneration worked on her injuries, but it was plain as day she was starting to get tired.

"I never thought we'd be pushed back this much…!"

Isabela said through gritted teeth as she evaded yet another slash from Yuuto. Pandora, who had formed a sword made out of demonic power, also slashed at her, following up with fire bullets created through demonic power. Though Mihae was supporting her as much as possible with her demonic power blasts and her agile footwork allowed her to evade the incoming attacks, Isabela was sure she wouldn't able to keep this up for long. Her opponents' blades had started grazing her body, failing to inflict significant damage so far only due to her Rook trait's defenses.

Yuuto nodded at Pandora as several Gravity Nails erupted from the ground around Isabela, pining her in place due to the increased gravity. At the same time, Pandora made a beeline for Mihae while Yuuto conjured a Grudge Dent, gathering his Demonic Power in it for a powerful strike that would pierce through Isabela. At that time however, a large number of fireballs were shot at the Gremory group from the direction of the school building.

"What the Hell!?"

Takeshi cried out as he and the rest were forced to dodge like crazy in order to evade the rain of fireballs coming at them. Turning his gaze at the direction of the attacks and straining his eyes, Takeshi noticed Riser standing at the top of the school building, a large magic circle on his head as he unleashed his saturation attack upon the Gremory Peerage.

"Trying to snipe us from afar, eh!? Not going to happen!"

Takeshi shouted as he generated a large amount of ashes, creating a dome around the Gremory group. Akeno reinforced it by adding several defensive magic circles on it, rendering Riser's salvo ineffective.

"This is our chance!" Ravel shouted. "Let's pull back at once and regroup!"

The rest of Riser's girls nodded as they spread their wings and took flight. Yuuto conjured several Demonic Swords around him and shot them at the fleeing Devils, but most were shot down by Riser's fireballs while the rest missed their mark. Once the remaining pieces of Riser's Peerage had left the area, Riser ceased attacking, taking a few steps back and vanishing from everyone's sight.

"They escaped…" Takeshi said with a frustrated expression. "This was a good chance to finish everyone off and leave Riser standing alone."

"Let's pull back into the forest." Yuuto suggested. "We're a bit too exposed out here in the open. I'm not in the mood to be bombarded once again."

[Good idea.] Rias's voice echoed in everyone's ears. [I'll be joining you shortly to plan for the final stage.]

"Understood, President."

Akeno said as all members of the Gremory Peerage nodded at each other as they left the ruined and burning sports field, taking cover in the forest.

"Grayfia-san's training is showing some really good results." Takeshi said, flexing his arms. "I don't feel winded at all."

"…No kidding." Koneko said. "She knew what she was doing."

After almost half a minute had passed, Rias appeared above them, descending into the forest next to her servants. She looked a bit haggard, but not to the extent where it would impair her.

"You did great, everyone." Rias said with a wide smile. "Thanks to your efforts, the playing field is now even. It's six versus six, and I'm feeling confident about our odds."

"We could have turned it into six versus one, but Riser's interference didn't let us finish the job." Pandora said, an annoyed expression on her face. "It's a good thing they didn't attack us while Riser was bombarding us from above."

"…Too dangerous." Koneko said. "All of them were still exhausted both physically and mentally. They could lose more members if they tried to aim at us. Pulling back was the smart thing to do there."

"Judging from the direction they took, they're planning to regroup near the tennis courts or the pool." Yuuto said. "That, however, leaves us with a bit of a dilemma."

"We could all head towards Riser as we are, but that might leave us exposed to a potential counterattack from the rest of Riser's servants." Akeno said. "Same thing could happen if we focus on the rest of Riser's Peerage and Riser comes at us. Being caught in a pincer attack might spell disaster for our group."

"In that case, splitting up is probably the best course of action here." Rias said. "I will take Yuuto and Koneko with me, and we will target the rest of Riser's Peerage. Meanwhile Akeno, Takeshi and Pandora will head to the school building to keep Riser occupied."

"Akeno-san's lightning will be very potent against Riser, while Koneko-chan's Senjutsu should be enough to deal with Ravel-san." Yuuto said. "It's as good a formation as any."

"Once my team is done with the rest of Riser's Peerage, we'll join the second group and take down Riser together." Rias said. "How does this sound, everyone?"

The members of Rias's Peerage nodded in agreement…except for one person.

"No, we shouldn't split up like that. All of you should target Riser's remaining Peerage members…while I stall Riser on my own."

Takeshi said, his suggestion prompting everyone to let out shocked gasps and stare at him with incredulous expressions.

"What are you saying, Takeshi?" Rias said, her disapproval palpable. "Sure, you're capable, but even you can't stand against a High-class Devil on your own. Having others support you is—"

"Too risky." Takeshi said, completing Rias's sentence. "President, have you considered the possibility that the entire new school building might be a giant trap? That the moment we step inside, Riser's going to blow the whole place to kingdom come and take us all down while he remains unharmed? Hell, if I was near immortal, that's what I'd do."

Takeshi's words prompted everyone to frown. This was an angle they hadn't thought of.

"You know that I'm the most durable among you all." Takeshi continued. "In that case, it makes the most sense that I confront Riser while you guys secure our advantage. If he has a trap like that prepared, he won't set it off for just one guy. Three of us coming at him though…he might consider it a worthwhile exchange."

"Still, you against Riser on your own…it's too much." Rias said, a concerned expression on her face. "You're asking me to sacrifice you, and when considering the toll your Balance Breakers take on your body…I…"

"I'm asking you to act as our King." Takeshi said, placing his hands on Rias's shoulders. "I'm asking you to trust me, and do what's necessary for us to win. From my part, I intend to keep my promise and do everything in my power to set you free. If that means I have to be the sacrifice…that's fine with me."

"Takeshi…"

"You know this is the right call, President." Takeshi insisted. "If you take down the rest of Riser's group, even if Riser defeats me, you'll still have the numerical advantage. If you don't come to him, Riser will be forced to leave his base or risk losing by default. Out in the open, you can take him down no problem."

The rest of the group remained silent, watching Rias wrestling with indecision while biting her lip. After a few seconds, she sighed.

"…Alright." Rias said with a resigned expression. "I don't like this at all, but it's the optimal strategy. Takeshi, you will head to the school building and occupy Riser to the best of your ability, while the rest of us will take down his remaining pieces."

"…Isn't it nice, Senpai?" Koneko stared at Takeshi. "You wanted to face Riser on your own from the start, didn't you? I know you well enough to see through your intent."

"I won't deny that I want to test myself against a powerful High-class Devil in a one-on-one fight." Takeshi grinned. "But that doesn't change the fact this is the best course of action."

"…You're incorrigible." Koneko shook her head in exasperation before grabbing Takeshi's hand. "Just be careful out there."

"You too." Takeshi said. "These guys are probably getting desperate, and there's no telling what a cornered person might pull off."

"…Right."

"Good luck, Takeshi-kun."

Yuuto said as he and Takeshi bumped their fists while grinning. Akeno and Pandora had matching concerned expressions on their faces, but said nothing. Just as the others prepared to take off in order to go after Ravel and the rest, Takeshi spoke.

"Just to be clear, buying time for you is all well and good, but you don't mind if I kick Riser's ass, right, President?"

"…Famous death flag right there."

Pandora muttered as Rias spoke.

"Feel free to do so. However, you cannot be reckless!"

Once the others had taken their leave, Takeshi turned his sights to the new school building, letting out a sly smile as he spoke.

"Sorry, President…but pushing myself too much is my specialty."

After saying that, Takeshi dismissed Mayhem Striker and equipped Berserk Devastator before starting to head towards the new school building and the battle awaiting him there.

This concludes Chapter 19. First, in response to your reviews.

To Ryukipendragon: Sorry, you didn't get any of them right. However, I will say this regarding Crom Cruach. His Sacred Gear is Cataclysm Zone itself, and he awakens only once the other six auxiliary Gears are active.

To Guest: Koneko would choose Rias's team like in canon.

To Shooter312: Glad you enjoyed it :)

This chapter was a pain to finish, both figuratively and literally (the incision from the surgery I undertook a couple of days ago still hurts like Hell). But at long last, the Rating Game has begun. This time, Rias and her group are showing better results thanks to their training. They've taken down most of their opponents with minimal injuries to themselves and have left Riser in a rather tight spot. Frankly, they could have blitzed Riser's group if they went all out, but they're not doing so because they're playing it safe just in case.

I'm also addressing a question I had regarding the Rating Game in the novels, namely why Rias didn't make a temporary trade with Sona or Sairaorg in order to increase the number of servants in her team. I assume it's because Ishibumi hadn't considered the trading system yet, but that doesn't stop it from being a plot hole. That's why I made a rule here that forbid Rias from receiving outside assistance.

Well, that's all for now. Next chapter will be the climax of the game. I'll do my best to deliver it in a timely fashion, but I'm still not at one hundred percent, and I don't know how my upcoming chemotherapy will affect me, so there may be delays again. As always, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
