Chapter 21 – Excursion

One of the bleakest sceneries he had the misfortune to behold so far. That was the only way Takeshi could describe his surroundings.

There was dense mist all around him, spreading as far as he could see, and dark clouds covered the sky. The sound of thunder crackling above him was the only sound that could be heard at first, followed by drizzle that turned into rain. For some reason, each droplet seemed to sting his skin, as if the rain itself was poison. If he focused, he could see the vague shapes of dead trees around him, their gnarled roots resembling myriad hands reaching out for him. The odor of decay all around him only served to reinforce his negative perception.

Driven by some unknown impulse, Takeshi forged ahead, his feet sinking in the wet mud and his breath coming out in short gasps. He wasn't sure why he was here or where he was supposed to go, only that he had to keep moving despite his discomfort and the eerie atmosphere of this place. No, it was perhaps for these very reasons that he felt compelled to move, to escape from this dreary forest.

After walking for an indeterminate amount of time, Takeshi arrived at an outcropping overlooking a wide river below him that spilt into eight smaller ones further down. Normally, this would have been a beautiful sight, but the river's waters were murky and putrid while the shores were barren and desolate. It was as if the whole landscape had died, and Takeshi was viewing its rotting carcass.

The thunderstorm above him intensified at that moment, followed by a massive rumbling that shook the area. Takeshi yelped as he stumbled and almost fell down, taking a few steps back just in case. The river below started bubbling and frothing as a dark shadow squirmed in its depths. Then, a massive serpentine body emerged from it, followed by eight heads each attached to a long neck that rose from the smaller rivers. The monster's features were obscured in darkness, but Takeshi could feel its unmistakable malice.

"You are…"

Takeshi muttered. As if having heard his words, the monster's eight heads turned to stare at him. For some reason, its hostility seemed to go down, its eight pairs of eyes narrowing as it stared at the young man before it. Then, a fragmented voice echoed throughout the area.

[You…before…at last… The others…perhaps…game… However…too soon…introductions…later…time…wake!]

The last word seemed to shake Takeshi's whole being as he felt his vision growing dim and something pulling him up.

"Man…what a way to wake up…"

Takeshi grumbled as he opened his eyes, still rattled from his unusual dream. Judging from its odd contents, he could guess what this was about. Another Evil Dragon was on the verge of awakening, a prospect Takeshi dreaded.

"Isn't it too soon though…?" Takeshi muttered. "It hasn't even been a week ever since the game against Riser. Then again, leave it to these monsters to do whatever they wish without regard for anything…"

The rustling coming from his side interrupted his train of thought. Turning his gaze there, Takeshi was treated to the sight of Rias Gremory, one of his two girlfriends, sleeping soundly next to him with a peaceful expression while hugging his arm. As usual, she wasn't wearing anything since, according to her, she was more comfortable sleeping like that.

Seeing her like that had an instant effect on Takeshi's mood as he felt his worries flying away. Lifting his head, he kissed her on the brow. Rias's eyes twitched in response and opened slowly, with her letting out a cute yawn before focusing on Takeshi.

"Good morning, sleepyhead." Takeshi smiled. "Had a good sleep?"

"The best." Rias said, smiling back before frowning a bit. "But my waking-up experience is a bit lacking so far."

"Hm, I think I know just what my lovely master needs this fine morning."

Takeshi grinned as he drew closer and kissed Rias, their bodies almost glued together. Their make-out session went on for several seconds before the two separated.

"Full marks." Rias said with a grin. "Now, regarding the reward for your exemplary service…"

"Let's not get too carried away, Rias." Takeshi said. "Koneko and I are supposed to meet in an hour, and I'd rather not be late."

"I guess you have a point." Rias said. "You've spoiled me plenty last night, so I don't get to complain or demand for more. However, I still don't understand why you won't let me move in with you like I suggested. We could spend a lot more…quality time together like that."

"Because then, Koneko would have to move in as well in order to keep things fair, and the house isn't big enough for all of you." Takeshi said. "Plus, I'm not sure how I'd explain this to my parents without resorting to hypnotizing them, and like I've said before, I don't like using magic on them unless it's absolutely necessary."

"I understand how you feel, but I still don't like it." Rias said with a slight pout. "Your girlfriend here can be quite needy, Takeshi. I want to be with you as much as possible."

"If this helps, how about the two of us go on a date next Saturday?" Takeshi suggested. "There's a new exhibit opening in Tokyo based on the Heian period, and I figured you'd be interested in going."

"Really!?" Rias exclaimed as she drew closer, her eyes sparkling. "You're not pulling my leg, are you, Takeshi?"

"Why would I do that?" Takeshi chuckled, caressing her hair. "My mother has received a pair of tickets from a coworker of hers as a gift, so we're all set. Unless you have other plans?"

"A date with my boyfriend, and an exhibit on Japanese history?" Rias said with a serious expression. "Even Armageddon itself wouldn't stop me from going."

"It's settled then." Takeshi said. "I'll be looking forward to next Saturday, Rias."

"Not as much as I will, Takeshi." Rias said, kissing him once again. "Thank you. It sounds like it will be a wonderful first date."

At the moment, a knock was heard on the door.

"Takeshi, it's me." Pandora's voice was heard. "Are you awake? Shiori-san says that breakfast is ready."

"Just give us a couple of minutes, Pandora." Rias said, a mischievous smile on her face. "Takeshi and I are still getting ready."

Pandora was silent for a few seconds before letting out a sigh.

"…I see." Pandora said. "Make yourselves decent then and come down as fast as you can. Otherwise, the food will get cold."

After Pandora had taken her leave, Rias spoke.

"That child really isn't being honest with herself…" Rias muttered with a sigh as she got up and started dressing herself. "Now then, let's not waste any more time."

Takeshi nodded as he got up and started putting his clothes on as well. Once the two of them were ready, they headed to the dining room, where Hiroto, Shiori and Pandora were waiting for them.

"Good morning, Hiroto-san, Shiori-san." Rias greeted Takeshi's parents. "It's good to see you again, and my apologies for the sudden intrusion."

"Ara, Rias-san?" Shiori said. "When did you get here? We didn't notice you at all."

"I came here a few minutes ago." Rias lied. "It was necessary to deliver some material to Takeshi and Pandora regarding the Occult Research Club's next project."

"I never thought a club like yours could get so busy." Hiroto remarked. "Excursions to remote locations, projects, reports, stakeouts… It baffles my mind to be honest."

"Trust me, I didn't think there would be so much work involved when I first started this club either." Rias laughed. "However, it's enjoyable and rewarding, and that's all that matters in the end. Once again, I thank you for your understanding when allowing Takeshi to participate in our activities."

"Think nothing of it." Shiori made a dismissive gesture. "As long as our son is having fun with his friends, we can't ask for anything more."

While Takeshi's parents and Rias were discussing, Pandora leaned close to Takeshi and whispered to him.

"…Your parents don't know that you're dating President?"

"…Not yet." Takeshi whispered back, while offhandedly noting how lovely Pandora smelled. "Since I'm also dating Koneko, it wouldn't be fair to her to present Rias as my only girlfriend and vice versa. I'm still thinking how to approach this."

"…The troubles of those pursuing a harem." Pandora said. "Having second thoughts?"

"No." Takeshi said. "I chose this, so I've resolved myself to do my best for these girls that care so much for someone like me until the end."

"…That's right." Pandora said with a small smile. "That's the kind of person you are after all…"

Breakfast passed like that with small talk between the members of the Ryuugamine family, Rias and Pandora. After about half an hour, the doorbell rang.

"I'll get that." Takeshi said as he stood up, heading for the door. "That must be Koneko."

Upon opening the door, Takeshi was greeted by the sight of Koneko in one of her casual outfits, which consisted of a black skirt, light yellow shirt and grey jacket. She was also holding a handbag in her left hand.

"…Good morning, Senpai." Koneko smiled at Takeshi. "Ready for our date?"

"You bet." Takeshi said. "Just give me a second to grab my jacket."

"I'm sure I don't need to remind you, but try to be back by evening, you two." Rias said as she walked into the hallway, accompanied by Pandora. "Our appointment with the Familiar Master is tonight, and we can't afford to be late. Otherwise, we'll have to wait for another couple of months or so until the next date."

"Got it."

"…Don't worry, President." Koneko said. "We'll be there."

"In that case, have fun in Akihabara." Rias said. "This is where you're going, right?"

"Yes." Takeshi said, turning to Pandora. "Pandora, I'll check out if the manga you asked for are available while we're there. If they are, I'll buy you as many volumes as I can."

"Please, and thank you." Pandora said, making a small bow. "Also, about the drawing tools I told you about the other day…"

"Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about that either." Takeshi said. "Leave it to me, Pandora."

"Again, thank you."

"Mom, Dad, I'm heading out!" Takeshi called out to his parents. "See you at dinner!"

"Have fun, Takeshi!"

"Try not to get overwhelmed by Akihabara's chaos!"

Following Hiroto and Shiori's words, the two young Devils left the Ryuugamine residence and headed for the train station, boarding the train heading to Tokyo. Although they could have teleported there, both of them wanted to enjoy the trip as normal teenagers. The two of them sat in silence for a couple of minutes until Koneko spoke after a while.

"…Since President was there, I guess you two were busy last night." Koneko said, a slight frown on her face. "As expected…it makes me a bit irked that you've taken things this far. Maybe I should—"

"Only if you feel ready, Koneko." Takeshi cut Koneko off. "There's no need to push yourself and rush things just because you feel the need to compete with Rias. I care for and treasure both of you."

"…Right." Koneko nodded with a smile. "Besides, I've already claimed your first kiss and your first date. Honestly, I would feel a little bad if I took every single one of your firsts and left nothing for President. But one of these days…well, look forward to it."

"Like I said, whenever you feel ready, I'll be here." Takeshi said, but then his expression fell. "Will be nice to look forward to something after that nasty dream today."

"…Nasty dream?" Koneko asked. "What's this about?"

"I saw a dreary landscape with an eight-headed monster rising from a foul river in it." Takeshi said. "I might be overthinking this, but I think one of the auxiliary Sacred Gears within Cataclysm Zone is about to awaken. The sensation coming from that beast felt similar to Nidhogg and Grendel."

"…Orochi." Koneko said. "The description sounds like him."

"That's my guess too." Takeshi said, leaning back on his seat while sighing. "Looks like I need to brace myself for another harsh trial…"

"…A trial that you will overcome, like you've done twice so far." Koneko said, holding Takeshi's hand. "I don't do bets, but if I did, my money would be on you every time, Takeshi-senpai."

"Thanks, Koneko-chan." Takeshi said, squeezing her hand. "Sorry that I dropped this on you while we're on our date. It's kind of a mood killer."

"…Never apologize for sharing your troubles with me, Senpai." Koneko said. "I'm here for you, both in good times and bad times."

"You're the best, Koneko-chan." Takeshi smiled. "Having you and all the others around me, I'm a really lucky guy in that regard, aren't I?"

"…You are." Koneko said. "Never forget it."

The two of them kept conversing as the train arrived at Tokyo. Then, they boarded another train in the station, and after travelling for about an hour, they finally arrived at Akihabara.

"This place sure is as chaotic as Mom said…"

Takeshi muttered while looking around. A huge number of electronics stores, game centers, anime and manga stores, shops selling various merchandise from popular series and small stalls could be seen all around the two Devils. Massive billboards and signs were covering the buildings, depicting a wide variety of anime characters, while the streets were littered with pedestrians and young women dressed in maid costumes that were handing out leaflets.

"…Even the cities I've seen in the Underworld can't match the bustle and energy around here." Koneko said, looking a bit overwhelmed. "Feels like we've stepped into a different world."

"No kidding." Takeshi said, holding Koneko's hand. "Now then, how about we throw ourselves into this chaos and enjoy ourselves to the fullest?"

"…Took the words right out of my mouth."

Koneko said as she and Takeshi set off to explore everything Akihabara had to offer. After window-shopping for a while, they headed for Taito Station, making their way to the building's second floor. Upon catching sight of a specific machine, Koneko headed straight for it.

"…That's…the limited-edition figure of one of the protagonists in Neo Neko-Neko Paradise." Koneko said, her eyes glued on the figure. "I've been looking all over for this, and one of the blogs I visited said it could be found here. This is a chance I cannot miss."

"In that case, it's time to show my mettle here." Takeshi said, rolling up his sleeves. "I'll lay my life on the line if it means getting that figure!"

"…Don't go that far please." Koneko said. "Knowing you, you might actually go and risk your life for that figure."

Takeshi ignored that remark as he focused on the crane, guiding it with slow and careful moves towards the intended prize.

The position of the figure is tricky, and the crane's arms seem to be able to handle only a certain amount of weight before the prize slips from them. Takeshi thought, his eyes on the doll. A difficult conundrum. However, you'd be wise not to look down on me, who was called the ruler of the crane back in the day!

A determined expression on his face, Takeshi continued manipulating the crane with robot-like accuracy, grabbing the intended prize after a while. His efforts were rewarded as he managed to bring the doll to him despite almost dropping it a couple of times. Wiping the sweat from his brow, he offered the doll to Koneko.

"Here you go, Koneko-chan." Takeshi smiled. "A limited-edition doll just for you."

"…Thank you, Takeshi-senpai." Koneko said with a wide smile as she hugged the figure, giving him a quick kiss. "I'll treasure it forever."

"There's that lovely smile I can't get enough of." Takeshi said, caressing Koneko's cheek, and then smirked. "Now then, how about we move on to the main event?"

"…I was waiting for it." Koneko said with evident fighting spirit. "I've been honing my skills for the day I can finally take the lead in our challenges."

"I've also been practicing myself." Takeshi said. "You may be my girlfriend, but I won't hold anything back, Koneko-chan. I hope you will do the same, otherwise I might hold a grudge."

"…I wasn't planning on it." Koneko said. "How about a bet to make things more interesting?"

"I'm listening."

"…If I win, you have to treat me for the next three times we go out together." Koneko said. "If you win…well, you can ask anything you want within reasonable bounds."

"Anything, eh?" Takeshi said, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Since we're here, this is a good chance. If I win, I want you to accompany me to a cosplay shop and try out various costumes. A cute girl like Koneko-chan would look amazing in them, I'm sure."

"…So, this is your fetish, you perverted Evil Dragon?" Koneko looked at Takeshi with half-lidded eyes. "Never would have guessed. However, it can't be helped, since this is a bet. Let's settle this, Senpai."

Takeshi nodded as the two of them entered the elevator, heading for the building's fifth floor, which was filled to the brim with arcade games. After coming across one that featured their favorite fighting game, the two of them sat down and grabbed the controllers.

"How should we do this?" Takeshi asked. "Best out of fifty like usual?"

"…Let's take it up a notch." Koneko said. "Best out of seventy."

"Interesting." Takeshi grinned. "Show me how much you've improved, Koneko-chan!"

"…Here I go!"

Koneko said with evident fighting spirit as both of them started playing against each other. Takeshi had become familiar with Koneko's fighting style over their past matches, but she surprised him as her reaction time seemed to be faster. However, refusing to be outdone, Takeshi redoubled his efforts, turning the tide once again. In the end, despite Koneko's efforts, their match ended with a result of forty – thirty in favor of Takeshi, who made a V-sign while cheering.

"…Senpai is peerless as usual." Koneko let out a disappointed sigh, but then smiled. "But that's why it's worth playing against you."

"As for me, playing against you is always a joy and a way to keep myself from becoming too confident." Takeshi said. "Feels like you'll overtake me one day if I slack off. More importantly though, about our bet…"

"…I promised, so I'll keep my word." Koneko said. "But first, how about we play some more games? Compared to Kuoh's arcades, there is a much wider selection here. Who knows when we'll get the chance to enjoy this again?"

"Perhaps sooner than you expect, but that's not a reason to not take full advantage of this opportunity." Takeshi said. "What should we start with?"

"…Let's see." Koneko said while looking around. "How about that one? But the one over there looks good too…"

After settling on a specific game, the two of them spent the next three hours going from one arcade game to the next until they were satisfied. They also entered a nearby photo sticker booth, taking several pictures together and sticking the best-looking one in the back of their cellphones. By the time they exited the building, road traffic had stopped and the streets had become crowded with people.

"Chuo-Dori has closed down right on time." Takeshi said after checking his phone, opening the map and pointing at a specific spot. "Let's make our way to this store, Koneko-chan. We'll look for the goods Pandora requested, and then we can check out the cosplay costume shop a couple of blocks from there for our little bet."

"…Lead the way, Senpai."

After walking for a few minutes, Takeshi and Koneko arrived in front of a large store. The shelves inside were filled to the brim with a variety of manga and anime, along with several merchandise from various series. While walking around and checking the merchandise, Takeshi smiled as he chanced upon what he wanted.

"The first four volumes of Flame of Recca, D-Gray Man, Love Hina, Rave Master, and Berserk." Takeshi said, picking these manga up. "Pandora is devouring all sorts of manga in lightning speed. The way she's going, she'll in debt to Rias for the rest of her very long life… Seeing anything you like here, Koneko-chan?"

"…Since she's into older titles now, Pandora-senpai might like this as well." Koneko said, picking up two volumes of YuYu Hakusho. "She's enjoyed my suggestions so far, which is why I'm confident she'll like this too."

"Is that why you two have been chatting so much lately?" Takeshi asked. "Because Pandora has been asking for suggestions about manga?"

"…Among other things." Koneko said. "She's a lot like I used to be, a person with a power she's afraid of and has very little control over. That's why, I want to do whatever I can for her. At the very least, I want to become someone she can talk to regarding her troubles."

"You and me both." Takeshi said. "Though I have a feeling she tries to distance herself from me sometimes. I wonder why."

"…Looks like Senpai is still a little slow in these matters." Koneko said, looking at Takeshi with half-lidded eyes. "Can't be helped in this case though."

However, I'm sure you'll get it sooner or later…even though part of me doesn't really want to increase the number of rivals…

Koneko thought so, but didn't voice this thought. Instead, she pointed at several shelves in the distance.

"…Aren't these the drawing tools Pandora-senpai asked for?"

"They are." Takeshi said. "I can't help but wonder where did this sudden interest come from. Oh, you think she's planning to branch off to drawing manga herself at some point?"

"…Could be." Koneko said. "When it comes to painting and drawing, she's very skilled."

"If that's the case, I wonder if I could get her to draw some tokusatsu-based manga…" Takeshi said, rubbing his chin. "I have tons of ideas I'd love to see on paper."

"…Try not to overwhelm Pandora-senpai with your requests." Koneko said. "Also, don't be too hasty. She might not come to enjoy this."

"I know." Takeshi said while looking at several pencil sets. "I'll temper my expectations while hoping for the best."

After the two of them had completed their purchases and sent them back home through a magic circle when they found the chance, Takeshi led Koneko to the nearby cosplay store next. Taking note of the lecherous gazes from several of the patrons inside and Koneko's hesitation, Takeshi turned to her.

"You know what, forget about this." Takeshi said. "Let's go have lunch, and about the bet, we can—"

"…A promise is a promise." Koneko cut off Takeshi. "It's alright. Let's go inside, Senpai."

"If you say so…"

The two of them walked inside, with Takeshi letting out some of his draconic aura. The effect was instantaneous as all the patrons scurried away from the two Devils and focused their attention elsewhere, giving Takeshi only a nervous look at infrequent intervals before turning their gazes away in a hurry. As troublesome as his curse was most of the time, he couldn't help but feel a little grateful about it in times like these.

"…Which ones would you like me to put on?"

Koneko said, pointing at the large number of outfits displayed there. After checking them out for a couple of minutes, Takeshi selected a few of them and handed them to Koneko.

"Try it out these four." Takeshi said. "Once you've worn them, you can consider the conditions of our bet fulfilled. I don't want to trouble you too much."

Koneko took the outfits and stepped inside one of the changing rooms. After a few seconds, she stepped out, wearing a pure white nurse outfit with a very short skirt that showed off her legs. Moreover, she had let out her cat ears and tail, with the latter flicking around. Takeshi fervently hoped that no-one would question this, though his intimidation made him confident that the other patrons wouldn't focus on Koneko too much.

"…How does it look on me?"

"How to say this…it's far better than I could have imagined." Takeshi said while checking her out. "It feels like I'm being healed just by watching you. Truly a best match."

"…Is that so?" Koneko said with a small smile. "…Perhaps this will turn out to be unexpectedly fun."

Koneko stepped into the dressing room once again, coming out wearing a frilly pink dress complete with a tiara and a scepter.

"Princess Koneko…" Takeshi nodded with a satisfied look. "Quite the refreshing look. Yes, I could get used to that."

"…I'm not too sure." Koneko said, twirling once. "It looks nice…but I feel like that stupid birdbrain's sister. Not very pleasant. Now, about the next one…"

After changing outfits once again, Koneko stepped out of the dressing room wearing a black leather dominatrix outfit and a black mask while holding a whip in her right hand.

"…This is bad." Takeshi said, his hands twitching. "It's a lethal combination. Feels like a new fetish will actually awaken in me…"

"…Don't hold back then." Koneko let out a mischievous smile, wrapping the whip around Takeshi's neck and drawing him closer. "I'll be glad to play with you any time you'd like~."

"You…are you mimicking Akeno-san?"

"…Was it no good?" Koneko asked, pulling back. "I thought her attitude would be fitting with this outfit."

"Oh, it's fitting alright…" Takeshi muttered. "A little too fitting to be honest… A pure and honest girl like Koneko-chan acting all sultry and seductive like Akeno-san…I don't know if my heart can take it."

"…Interesting." Koneko said, grinning a bit. "I'll keep it in mind for another time. Finally, it's this…"

This time, Koneko stepped out wearing a belly dancer's outfit that barely covered her private parts. Takeshi froze for a couple of seconds, but then rushed to embrace Koneko, shielding her from anyone who might be gazing in their direction.

"…Senpai?" Koneko asked, a healthy blush on her face. "This is…"

"Sorry, but I don't want you to show this appearance to anyone else but me, Koneko-chan." Takeshi said while holding Koneko close to him. "It's just…way too stimulating."

"…Senpai is the possessive type then?" Koneko smirked. "I should have known. A Dragon guards his hoard in a zealous manner after all. But if you want me to change, you should let me go. People are starting to stare again."

"Right."

Takeshi said, letting go of Koneko and taking a step back. After changing back into her normal clothes, Koneko stepped out of the dressing room, carrying the cosplay outfits with her. She took them to the cashier, much to Takeshi's surprise.

"You're buying them?" Takeshi asked. "How come?"

"…Since you had such a favorable reaction to them, I thought it would be worth purchasing them." Koneko said. "Look forward to a repeat performance in the future."

Koneko winked at Takeshi, causing him to blush a bit. He took note of several envious gazes coming from the people around them, but ignored them. Once Koneko was done, the two of them headed to a nearby maid café in order to have lunch. After sitting down and giving their orders to the maid, Koneko turned to Takeshi.

"…I'm surprised you didn't ask me to cosplay as a maid." Koneko said while looking around. "Some specific reason for that? Or do maids not excite you?"

"Eh, to be honest, after Grayfia-san's harsh training…I can't really look at maids the same way as I did before." Takeshi admitted with a frown. "I keep flashing back to me getting my butt kicked by her, you know? On the bright side, I was never much of a maid enthusiast, so it's not really an issue."

"…Makes sense." Koneko said. "Grayfia-san was a terrifying opponent during the group exercises. You and President had it rough, having to face her one-on-one so many times."

"It was difficult, but worth it." Takeshi said as the maid brought his omurice with a cat design and Koneko's cheesecake. "On an unrelated note…did you have any news about your sister so far? You told me once before that you had asked Rias to keep her ears open about any rumors, but you haven't told me if there's been any information yet regarding her whereabouts."

"…There's nothing new on that front." Koneko said with a frown. "My sister remains as elusive as always. I also asked Chiharu-san, but as far as she knows, she hasn't shown up in any Youkai-controlled territories."

"You think she might be working with Izanami like Hisaya and his goons were?" Takeshi asked. "I mean, if she's gone crazy, it makes sense she'd join those similar to her."

"…If she had, the Oni wouldn't need me to break the seal back then." Koneko said. "They could have had Kuroka-neesama do it for them. No, chances are, she's still on the run, hiding perhaps in some other faction and laying low. But I'll find her one day, and then…I'll do what I must if it's necessary."

"Until then though, you and all of us have to grow stronger." Takeshi said. "Who knows what else we'll come across down the line? That's why I'm looking forward to tonight's trip to the Familiar Forest. Perhaps I can make a contract with a strong familiar that will allow my fighting style to evolve even further."

"…That would be nice, but it won't be so easy." Koneko warned Takeshi. "Such powerful creatures are notoriously difficult to find and convince to make a contract with a Devil. They're more likely to turn on you than become your partner."

"Well, even if it isn't that strong, I'll settle for a useful one." Takeshi said. "But that Familiar Master must be quite skilled if he can traverse a forest filled with so many dangerous creatures. What kind of person is he?"

"…I don't want to spoil the surprise." Koneko said. "You'll see for yourself tonight."

"The way you're saying it makes me think this guy's going to be some sort of weirdo." Takeshi said while grimacing. "It doesn't matter in the end though. As long as he can do his job, which is getting me and Pandora familiars, I won't ask for anything more."

"…That's the spirit." Koneko nodded as she cut a piece from her cheesecake and offered it to Takeshi. "Here, say 'ahh'."

Takeshi gulped down the piece in one go before cutting a piece from his omurice and offering it to Koneko in turn. This had become a habit for the two of them each time they went out to eat together. He chuckled a bit upon recalling a time when they almost did the same in school two days ago, which would have probably led to quite a lot of gossip. After the two of them were done with their food, they left the maid café. Looking at his cellphone, Takeshi frowned.

"Time sure flies when you're having fun." Takeshi said. "We've missed the train we were supposed to take, and the next one is too late. At this rate, we won't make it in time back to Kuoh."

"…It can't be helped then." Koneko said. "We'll jump back to Kuoh through magic circle."

Takeshi nodded as the two of them walked into a less busy road. While Koneko used her Senjustu to divert everyone's attention and make them blend with the environment, Takeshi conjured a teleportation magic circle. A flash of light engulfed them as they vanished from the area.

Later, at the Occult Research Club…

"Everyone's here. Good. That means we can head out now. The Familiar Master is waiting for us."

Rias said, addressing the other members of the Occult Research Club assembled in the clubroom.

"It's been some time since we last visited him." Yuuto remarked. "It must have been…three to four years ago, I guess? This was shortly after I joined, with Koneko-chan and I heading out to get our familiars."

"How was it?" Takeshi asked. "Did you have any difficulties?"

"No, it was a surprisingly simple process." Yuuto said. "Though that might have been so because I wasn't that interested in what kind of familiar I would get. My mind was occupied by…other thoughts at that time."

"Any advice for us?" Pandora asked next. "Anything we need to be wary of?"

"The most important thing is to not get carried away and try to approach dangerous creatures to make into your familiars." Akeno said. "Several Devils in the past were seriously injured by attempting this, and some of them have died. Be very careful, and don't take heed of the Familiar Master's sometimes…outrageous suggestions."

Takeshi was curious about that last statement, but at that time, the magic circle in the clubroom let out a bright light.

"That's our cue." Rias said. "The magic circle has connected to the Familiar Forest. Let's go, everyone."

Once the members of the Occult Research Club stepped into the magic circle, they were engulfed by the light of teleportation. Once it died down, they found themselves in a dense forest, with the moonlight barely managing to pass through the thick foliage.

"So, this is the Familiar Forest…" Takeshi said, looking around. "Hard to believe we're in the Underworld. Is there something special to this forest that attracts all these powerful creatures here, Ri…I mean, President?"

Takeshi corrected himself before using Rias's name out of habit. While he had no issues using her name when they were alone together, it would still be seen as an offense in noble society for a servant to address his master in such a casual manner. That was why Takeshi made sure to address Rias in an appropriate manner for their respective positions when others were around. However, he couldn't help but find it annoying. On the other hand, this had given him one more reason to strive for the position of High-class Devil, namely to stand proud next to Rias without reservations.

"When it comes to the Familiar Forest, it's actually all that remains of the Primal Demonic Forest from the time of our race's dawn." Rias said. "The lingering high amount of demonic power attracts all manner of creatures here, making it an ideal hunting ground."

"The Spirits are also unusually active here." Pandora remarked. "If I could use my powers to their fullest here, I feel like I could tear this place apart no problem."

"…Please don't do that, Pandora-senpai." Koneko said. "We need this forest intact."

"So, where's this Familiar Master?" Takeshi asked, looking around. "Wasn't he supposed to—?"

"Gotta catch them all!"

Everyone was startled from this loud shout. The next moment, a young man wearing a sleeveless shirt, shorts and a hat turned backwards jumped down from a branch above them and landed next to Kuoh Academy's Devils, flashing them a wide smile.

"Greetings, everyone!" The man said in an energetic manner. "My name is Zatouji of Madara Town, a Devil-in-training aiming to become the Familiar Master! Now, are you ready to catch'em all!?"

Takeshi narrowed his eyes at the bizarre young Devil before his eyes.

Feels like he came straight out of Pokemon or something, especially with that cheap getup. Takeshi thought. However, it's a fact that I wasn't able to take notice of him even though he was above me, and the same holds true for the others. He must be somewhat skilled then.

"It's been some time, Zatouji-san." Rias greeted the Familiar Master and gestured at Takeshi and Pandora. "These are my newest servants and the ones I was talking about."

"Hm, a scary-looking young man and a black-haired beauty, huh?" Zatouji said with an inquisitive look. "I see. OK, leave this to me! No matter the familiar, I'll catch'em all without fail!"

"You're confident if nothing else…" Pandora muttered. "Will this person be alright, President?"

"Of course." Rias said. "This person is more than qualified when it comes to familiars. We will catch Takeshi and Pandora's familiars while receiving advice from him."

"Yes, leave everything to me!" Zatouji said, hitting his chest. "Now then, what type of familiar would you prefer? Strong one? Fast one? High defense? Perhaps one using poison?"

"Something concerning got mixed up in there…" Takeshi said with a frown. "I'd like a strong one. Strong enough to be able to handle dangerous enemies if possible."

"In that case, I've got just the thing for you!" Zatouji said, taking out a large catalogue and pointing at a specific page. "One of the Dragon Kings, Chaos Karma Dragon Tiamat! A legendary Dragon with power equal to that of a Devil King! Of course, because of that, no Devil has caught her yet! If you want overwhelming power, this is the best option!"

"It seems fitting for you, Takeshi." Rias said, an intrigued expression on her face. "She's a Dragon, and you have a Dragon-type Sacred Gear. You'd match well, so you should go for it. I know you can pull it off."

"No, no, there's no way in Hell we'd match or that I'd pull this off." Takeshi said. "I'm flattered that you have so much faith in me, but who in their right mind would go after a Dragon King of all things? Feels like she could have me for breakfast no problem."

[I've fought Tiamat once before when I was younger.] Grendel said. [One of the most fun experiences I've had! She crushed me alright, but I made her work for it! If we fought now, I'm sure I'd come out on top! Seek her out, whelp! She will learn today that a mere Dragon King is no match for an Evil Dragon!]

"Hard pass on this one, Zatouji-san." Takeshi said, ignoring Grendel. "How about something I can handle? Something a little easier to catch?"

"Then, how about this!?" Zatouji said, pointing at another picture. "The Hydra! A spectacular specimen indeed!"

Takeshi took a look at the picture, his scowl deepening. The many-headed serpent depicted there was surrounded by tons of skull and crossbones marks, while emblazoned above its image in bright red Devil letters was the phrase 'Extremely dangerous! Do not approach under any circumstances!'.

"This one has a deadly poison that can kill most Devils in a matter of minutes!" Zatouji said in an excited manner. "On top of that, it's nearly immortal! One of the worst monsters to roam this world, which even turns on its master! What do you think!? Really strong, no!?"

"A Hydra is pretty rare, and would make for a truly fascinating familiar." Rias said, an excited look on her face. "Yes, it's perfect. There should be one deep in the forest. If we go now, we should be back in a couple of hours."

"President, you're getting carried away too easily…" Takeshi said, rubbing his temples while feeling a migraine coming. "I already have several Evil Dragons within me trying to kill me. I don't need my familiar to be after my life as well. Don't you have something a little more manageable?"

"You're a difficult customer, boy." Zatouji said as he checked his catalogue. "Then how about…this!? Hellhound! It's wild and savage with a breath of fire that can even melt steel! However, if properly trained, it remains loyal to its master until the day it dies!"

"Now we're getting somewhere." Takeshi said. "I've tangled with Hellhounds before, so I should be able to handle one."

"Excellent!" Zatouji said, turning to Pandora. "What about you, young lady?"

"I'm not sure…" Pandora said. "Perhaps a familiar focusing on defense…or maybe one capable of using illusions? I could use something to distract others."

"I have a couple of suggestions for you, but first, let's head for Hellhound territory!" Zatouji said. "Here we go! Say it together with me, youngsters! Gotta catch'em all!"

"He sure is obsessed with his job…"

Takeshi remarked with a mutter as the group followed after Zatouji. However, after walking for a couple of hours, an unexpected problem presented itself.

"Nothing's coming out…" Zatouji remarked with a confused expression. "What's going on? The forest should be teeming with life at this hour. No, judging from these tracks, a large number of creatures was here, but they ran away when they noticed our approach."

"Isn't that expected?" Pandora said. "I mean, if they don't see us as prey, why would they stay around?"

"The creatures here are used to the sight of Devils, and while several are skittish enough to run away, some of them at least should have stayed behind to observe us." Zatouji said. "It's as if they're scared of something."

"Scared…" Yuuto said, turning to Takeshi. "Perhaps it's because of you, Takeshi-kun? You know, that whole Evil Dragon aura thing?"

"But I'm suppressing my draconic aura as much as possible." Takeshi said. "It can't be me…can it?"

"The Evil Dragon User, eh?" Zatouji said, observing Takeshi. "Could be. The beasts' sixth sense might be warning them of the danger even if you're not letting out your aura."

"Ara, this could be a problem." Akeno said with a troubled expression. "If we can't approach them, Takeshi-kun and Pandora-san won't be able to make a contract. Perhaps we'll have to capture them by force."

"Absolutely not!" Zatouji shouted. "I won't allow you to disrupt the forest's delicate ecosystem! We could set up a trap, leave the area and wait until we get a hit, or—"

"This is a waste of time." Takeshi cut off Zatouji. "Since the prospective familiars are running away because of me, I'll go back to the clearing and wait until Pandora has captured her familiar. We'll come back for mine some other time when we're more prepared. Besides, it's not like I really need a familiar at this point."

"I guess that's true…" Rias said while frowning. "Very well. However, if anything happens, call for help at once. Also, maybe one of us should stay with you."

"It's alright, President." Takeshi said. "You guys should focus on helping Pandora with her contract. There's something I want to try out as well, and it's best if another people aren't around."

"Oi, oi, you're not planning on causing widespread destruction or anything like that, right!?" Zatouji said. "The forest shouldn't—"

"Yeah, yeah, I won't disturb the ecosystem or anything like that." Takeshi made a dismissive gesture. "I want to see if I can summon a new Sacred Gear."

"Already?" Yuuto asked with a frown. "Isn't it a bit too soon?"

"That's what I thought as well, but the Evil Dragons don't adhere to a schedule apparently." Takeshi shrugged. "In any case, best to get it over with."

"If it's you, then no matter which one comes next, you'll triumph over them without fail." Rias said with a smile. "I'll be waiting for the good news once we get back."

"Count on it."

"Don't be too reckless." Pandora said. "You can't underestimate the Evil Dragons."

"I know." Takeshi said. "I'll be as careful as possible."

Once Rias and the others had left, Takeshi spread his wings and took flight, landing on the clearing they had arrived in after a couple of minutes. Summoning Cataclysm Zone, he tried summoning one of his already active Sacred Gears, but the belt was unresponsive.

"Figures." Takeshi said. "Alright, whoever you are, and I think I know who you are, come out now. No use delaying the inevitable."

There was only silence for a few seconds, but then—

[Connection Complete.]

A large amount of aura erupted from Cataclysm Zone following that announcement, sending shivers throughout Takeshi's body. The large gem embedded in the buckle changed color from black to navy blue, with a stream of aura emerging from it and travelling down Takeshi's right arm. Then, it solidified into the form of a navy-colored rod with a black handle, numerous tiny barbs throughout its body and a navy gem placed in the bottom of the hilt.

"This is…Blight Current." Takeshi said while inspecting his new Sacred Gear. "Then, it's just as I suspected. The Evil Dragon this time is…"

[The great me, of course!]

Before he realized it, Takeshi found himself in the dreary landscape he had dreamed of earlier today. He was standing at the edge of a cliff overlooking the foul river below him. Once again, the waters rumbled and parted as an enormous eight-headed eastern Dragon that was at least two hundred meters in length emerged from it. This time, Takeshi could view his body in its entirety, taking note of his navy-colored scales, the numerous fangs in his mouths, the tears of blood running down his eyes and the black electricity crackling here and there throughout his body. All in all, it was a haunting appearance befitting of an Evil Dragon.

"Venom Blood Dragon Yamata no Orochi, I presume." Takeshi said. "Your fearsome reputation precedes you."

[Damn well it should!] Orochi's voice rumbled. [I put in a lot of work to be recognized as a terrifying monster. It was no small feat, I tell you. In any case, it's very nice to meet you, partner! I'm looking forward to working with you!]

"Partner?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow at that. "What's the meaning of this, Orochi? The other two weren't as…forthcoming and jovial as you."

[Grendel and Nidhogg? Please.] Orochi scoffed. [These fellows wouldn't know subtlety and manners if they bit them in the ass. No, to be fair, I would be normally more hostile, but I can't exactly treat my fellow countryman in a rough manner, can I?]

"Hah?" Takeshi said, an astonished expression on his face. "So, because I'm Japanese, and your country of origin is Japan, you're saying you're going to treat me better compared to the other hosts?"

[Of course!] Orochi said while laughing. [You're the first wielder hailing from our great country in ages! Well, you're the first I encountered at least. Maybe there was another user in the past killed by one of the others, I don't know. But I digress. This is a joyous occasion indeed! If I had legs that allowed it, I might even be dancing in joy right now.]

"Suspicious…" Takeshi said with narrowed eyes. "This is very suspicious behavior, Orochi."

[Come on, don't be like that, partner!] Orochi said. [Old Orochi here's got your back until the end of the line. You can trust me, you know? Among the Evil Dragons, I'm the most honest one. Also, the one who knows how to party the best too!]

"You don't actually expect me to believe all that nonsense, do you?" Takeshi glared at the Evil Dragon. "If this is some sort of game for you, it's one I'm in no mood to play."

[A game?] Orochi said. [Of course, it's a game! Everything in life is a game, no, a festival! That's why you should learn to lean back and enjoy everything! That's the secret to a good, long life! Well, that and beating up anyone who tries to get in the way of your fun!]

Orochi let out a boisterous laugh as several bolts of thunder struck the area around the two.

[You never change, Orochi.] Nidhogg's voice was heard. [Always needlessly excitable about every little thing.]

[A good fight, I can understand, but I never could figure out your tastes, Orochi.] Grendel's voice echoed next. [Are you serious though? You don't intend to play around with this whelp?]

[Oh, it's been a long time, you two!] Orochi said. [Are you doing well? No, since you're chained, I guess you're not. But hey, even that can be fun in its own way!]

[Speak for yourself.] Nidhogg hissed. [If I had my way, the whelp would be a rotting carcass right about now.]

[If I had mine, he'd be a flattened, broken mess!] Grendel laughed. [However, still plenty of chances for that to happen down the line!]

"I can just feel the love around these parts." Takeshi said, his words dripping with sarcasm. "But if you think you can fool me with this little performance, you've got another thing coming. I know you must be scheming something."

[How cruel!] Orochi wailed. [I'm not a bad Evil Dragon, yet I get so little trust! You're making me cry tears of blood here!]

[ [ You're always crying tears of blood, dumbass.] ]

Both Nidhogg and Grendel retorted together, prompting Orochi to snicker while saying [That's true, I guess]. Then, Orochi's eight heads suddenly turned towards the sky, with the Evil Dragon letting out a low growl.

"What's the matter?"

[Trouble.] Orochi said, turning his gaze back to Takeshi. [Looks like our first fight will be another trial by fire.]

"Wait, what do you mean—"

Before he had the chance to ask for explanations, Takeshi found himself back in the Familiar Forest. Although he was disoriented for a few seconds, the crashing sounds in the distance that were coming closer forced him to focus.

[Dodge!]

Following that warning from Orochi, Takeshi jumped to the side, evading a large globule of venom shot at him. The next moment, the nearby trees fell down as a large serpent with multiple heads somewhat reminiscent of Orochi appeared there, hissing at Takeshi in a hostile manner.

"That is…"

[Hydra.] Orochi spat out, clear hostility in his voice. [Tch, I always hated these western posers. Cheap knock-offs, the lot of them. Their progenitor was the worst. Showed him when I went to Greece through. Immortal Hydra my scaly rear.]

"Yeah, that's all very interesting, but any useful advice here!?" Takeshi said while dodging a bite from one of the Hydra's heads. "No, forget it! I'm calling the others and we're hightailing it out of here!"

Takeshi tried to form a communication magic circle, only for it to fizzle out and break apart.

"What the Hell!?"

[Sorry, partner, but this is my much-awaited debut fight.] Orochi said as Takeshi dodged more globules of venom aimed at him. [Can't have you spoiling it now, can I?]

"Stuff like that is why I can't trust any of you Evil Dragons!" Takeshi said, conjuring a defensive magic circle that the Hydra slammed on, letting out a hiss of pain. "If it's come down to this, I'll switch—"

[Hey, hey, don't make any hasty moves here, partner.] Orochi said. [Relax, we've got this in the bag. My abilities are more than enough to deal with this knock-off. Besides, I'm sealing off the access to the other two guys for now. The Sacred Gear will probably stop my interference soon, but we'll have finished off this piece of trash by then.]

"Aren't you confident!" Takeshi said as he evaded three heads snapping at him with nimble moves, using another as a foothold to jump above the Hydra and land behind it. "Alright then, let's see what you've got!"

Takeshi said as he created several ice pillars around the Hydra, stopping its movements for a few seconds. Before it could recover, he was upon it, striking one of its heads with Blight Current. The Hydra shrieked as copious amounts of blood burst out of said head, which convulsed for a bit before rotting and falling down.

[How's that!?] Orochi cheered. [Even with my powers restrained, my venom is still potent enough to stop even the Hydra's fabled regeneration! Let's put that cheap knock-off to sleep for good, partner!]

"Quirks aside, looks like you're a little useful." Takeshi said, brandishing his rod and glaring at the Hydra. "Now, you'll be eliminated without fail!"

Takeshi shouted as he charged at the Hydra.

A few minutes back…

"That's another unexpected issue…"

Rias remarked with a troubled expression upon seeing the large number of potential familiars trailing behind Pandora. Shortly after Takeshi had separated from the Gremory group, they had started encountering all sorts of creatures once again. Pandora had been using her Charm on them in order to prevent them from running away while they examined them, but as a result, they had started trailing behind her after a while.

"I'm sorry, everyone…" Pandora said with an embarrassed expression. "I thought I could lift the Charm after applying it, but it's not working. I should have known this was a terrible idea…"

"That's quite the skill you've got there, young miss." Zatouji said with an expression of interest in his face. "Hey, how about this? I was thinking it was time to get some companions, so why don't you join me? With a talent like this, I guarantee you'll become a Familiar Master in no time!"

"No thank you." Pandora said. "I'm quite content with my lot in President's Peerage."

"Shame." Zatouji said. "There's a lot of untapped potential there."

"So, where are we heading to, Zatouji-san?" Rias asked. "You said you had a good familiar in mind for Pandora, but you haven't gone into the specifics yet."

"You'll see it soon enough." Zatouji said. "We're almost there. But first, we really need to do something about this parade following us. Otherwise, we'll spook the creature we're looking for."

"…Can't you just order them to go away, Pandora-senpai?" Koneko asked. "Seems like the simplest solution."

"I can try…but my Charm doesn't act the way it's supposed to at times." Pandora said. "It's already bad enough that I can't lift it on my own. If I accidentally order to them to start a stampede…"

"It'll be alright." Akeno said. "If that happens, we'll simply teleport them away or beat them to submission. Personally, I'm a fan of the second option, ufufu~."

"Of course you are, Akeno…" Rias said. "Just do the best you can, Pandora. If this goes south, we'll handle it somehow."

"Alright…"

Pandora was still hesitating, but looked at the assembled beasts as her eyes shone.

"All of you, leave this place and stay away from us."

The creatures were unmoving for a few seconds, but then dispersed and started running into the forest. Pandora let out a relieved sigh at that.

"That's one problem solved." Zatouji remarked. "Now then, let's keep moving!"

After a couple of minutes of walking, the group arrived at the edge of a lake. Standing at its edge was a creature resembling a bobcat with six legs and three tails growing from its back that had silver patterns on its black fur.

"OK, that's far enough, everyone…" Zatouji said while whispering. "We don't want it to turn aggressive."

"That cat-like beast…it's a young Cath Palug, isn't it?" Yuuto said. "King Arthur fought an adult member of the species in the past if I remember correctly."

"That's right." Zatouji said. "I chanced upon this beauty a couple of weeks back. Cath Palugs are powerful demonic beasts that have great strength, can manipulate demonic power and cast illusions through their eyes. This is a young one, so it's not as powerful, but it should grow stronger in time. It would be a fine catch."

"A Cath Palug, eh?" Rias said. "They are considered a bad omen in the human world and the Underworld alike, but they're undoubtedly powerful familiars. What do you think, Pandora?"

"It's fitting for someone like me, the infamous Calamity Witch." Pandora said with a bitter smile. "If possible, I'd like that Cath Palug as a familiar, President."

"Very well." Rias said. "How should we approach it, Zatouji-san?"

"Usually, a Cath Palug isn't easy to get." Zatouji said. "If it's the young miss though, she might be able to Charm it into submission. Try it out."

"Don't worry, Pandora-san." Akeno said. "We'll be right here. If something goes wrong, we'll come to your aid at once."

Pandora nodded, stepping out of hiding and approaching the Cath Palug with slow steps. The cat-like creature turned to look at her, weariness in its gaze. Pandora kept walking towards it, her eyes glowing.

"It's alright." Pandora said in a calm manner as she extended her hand. "I won't hurt you. Won't you come here?"

The Cath Palug looked at her for a bit, sizing her up, before walking towards her with a slow gait. Once it reached her, it started licking her hand, with Pandora letting out a pleased smile as she hugged it. The Cath Palug started nuzzling against her, letting out satisfied mewls.

"I don't know if it's the Charm or your general disposition, but it's taken a liking to you." Zatouji said. "Good. All that's left is the contract."

"You remember the process, right, Pandora?"

"Yes." Pandora responded to Rias's question as she placed the Cath Palug on a magic circle she created and spoke. "In the name of Pandora Othrys, I order you! You shall become my familiar and respond to my contract!"

The light coming from the magic circle intensified for a few seconds as a small seal was branded on the Cath Palug's body. Then, it vanished, with the Cath Palug running to Pandora and climbing on her, resting on her shoulder.

"It looks like it was a success." Rias said with a smile. "All that's left now is—"

At that moment, a loud rumbling coming from the direction they had come from interrupted Rias, followed by flashes of thunder and a copious amount of smoke.

"…Takeshi-kun?"

"Takeshi-kun."

Akeno and Yuuto nodded at each other with matching knowing looks, while Pandora and Koneko sighed in exasperation.

"Seriously, can't he stay out of trouble for just a few minutes…?" Rias sighed as she unfurled her wings. "Let's go, everyone! Takeshi might need help!"

[Yes!]

All Devils present said so as they spread their wings and flew towards Takeshi's direction.

Meanwhile…

"Bad seven-headed serpent! Stay down!"

Takeshi said as he struck another incoming head with Blight Current. The Hydra's head wailed, throwing up copious amounts of blood before falling on the ground dead and leaving only six heads alive. The Hydra spat out more venom mixed with noxious fumes, which Takeshi scattered with a demonic power-infused howl.

[Ah, this is taking forever!] Orochi complained. [Partner, I'm sending you something nice, so make full use of it!]

A mental image formed on Takeshi's head. Letting out a small smile, he focused on Blight Current. The next moment, the rod's main body transformed, turning into eight whips with small fang-like protrusions on their end. Takeshi swung the eight-pronged whip, striking three of Hydra's heads from multiple angles and causing them to wither and die from the poison. The Hydra screeched as it snapped at Takeshi, but was forced to retreat as the whips started coming at it from multiple directions once again, opening deep gashes on the ground.

"You'd think it would run away with all its might right about now." Takeshi remarked as he kept swinging his whip, forcing the Hydra on the defensive. "Persistent bastard, isn't it? No, to begin with, why the Hell is it targeting me?"

[It must have sensed my aura.] Orochi said. [Since I tangled with their progenitor in the past, I guess all its descendants have it out for me.]

"Figures!" Takeshi said, jumping up to avoid the Hydra's incoming tail. "Either way, that's enough playing around! Time to finish this!"

[Yes!] Orochi said. [Use the ability I stole and corrupted from that bastard Susanoo!]

Takeshi focused on Blight Current once again, with the whips being enveloped by a black-colored electrical charge. Swinging it with all his might, Takeshi struck the Hydra with all eight thunder-clad whips, letting out a massive electrical discharge that saturated the area. The Hydra shrieked in agony as its body was burned all over by the black thunder.

"Victory was never an option for you!"

Before it could recover, Takeshi jumped on it, Blight Current having assumed its rod form again, and struck the remaining two heads. Damaged by the thunder and its body filled with poison, the Hydra succumbed to its injuries and fell on the ground dead, with Takeshi landing next to its smoking corpse.

[Alright!] Orochi cheered. [How was that, partner!? Aren't we the best combination!? The united front of fellow countrymen cannot be underestimated!]

Takeshi was about to answer, but a small piece of the Hydra's charred carcass fell on his hand. Although it shouldn't have been a big deal, he let out a cry of agony, feeling as if his hand had caught on fire.

"What the Hell!?" Takeshi shouted, cradling his arm. "Why does it hurt so much!?"

[Oops, forgot to mention that.] Orochi said, sounding somewhat awkward. [Use of Blight Current magnifies your sense of pain, so yeah…watch out for that.]

"I knew it was too good to be true…" Takeshi sighed. "Anything else I should know here, 'partner'?"

[That tone of distrust really hurts…] Orochi said in a sulking manner. [I can't help what I am, you know. But I assure you, there's nothing else other than. Promise!]

"Your statements don't exactly fill me with confidence…"

"Takeshi!"

Turning his attention to the sky, Takeshi saw Rias and the others approaching him, with Zatouji flying a short distance behind them.

[Nice girls you've got there.] Orochi said, letting out a low growl. [They look…delectable.]

Before Takeshi could question that statement, Zatouji hurried to the Hydra's corpse, inspecting it with wide eyes.

"What the Hell happened here!?" Zatouji screeched. "Is that…Hydra!? Why is it so far away from its habitat!? Ah, could this be an irregular rare encounter!? No, more importantly, you killed it!?"

"I had no choice here." Takeshi said. "Damn thing started attacking me out of the blue. I had to defend myself…with some help from a new 'ally', who wouldn't let me call for help."

"Blight Current." Rias said, focusing on the rod in Takeshi's hands. "Orochi's Sacred Gear. Looks like your suspicions were correct, Takeshi. How are you feeling?"

"Apart from the fact that this damn thing magnifies my sense of pain, pretty good all things considered." Takeshi said. "What about you guys? Did you find a familiar for Pandora?"

"Here it is." Pandora said, gesturing at the Cath Palug she was holding. "Since he's got these silver patterns on his fur, I'm thinking of calling him Gin."

"Sound good to me." Takeshi said with a smile, extending his hand towards the Cath Palug. "Nice to meet you, Gin."

Just as he was about to touch him, Gin hissed and swiped at him with his paws, opening a deep gash in his hand. Takeshi barely stifled a scream, feeling as if someone had slashed at him with a sword.

"Bad Gin!" Pandora scolded her familiar. "Don't be like that! Takeshi is a friend."

"No, it's alright…" Takeshi said. "He's probably scared of me like the other familiars. It's my bad."

[That damn cat!] Orochi hissed. [How dare he show such disrespect!? Maybe I should—]

Maybe you should take a hike. Takeshi said, cutting off Orochi. You've had your fun, and I've had enough of the heightened sense of pain.

[Fine, fine.] Orochi said. [But don't be a stranger, partner!]

Takeshi dismissed Blight Current, letting out a sigh of relief as the intense pain he felt was dulled. Meanwhile, Zatouji, who was still inspecting the Hydra, returned to the group with a satisfied expression.

"The body is in bad condition, but its fangs are mostly intact." Zatouji said. "They should fetch a good price in the market. Since it was your servant that took it down, how about we split the profits sixty – forty, Rias-sama?"

"Make it seventy – thirty and you've got a deal." Rias said, with Zatouji nodding, before she turned to Takeshi. "Pandora may have got her familiar, but what about you, Takeshi? Should we keep searching for a little while longer?"

"Nah, it's alright." Takeshi said. "Like I said, we can leave it for next time when we've planned things a bit better. Besides, after the Hydra encounter, I'm in no mood for more excitement today."

"Very well." Rias said, turning to Zatouji once again. "Thank you for your help today, Zatouji-san. A representative of the Gremory family will speak with you later regarding the Hydra."

"You got it!" Zatouji said. "See you all next time! We'll catch'em all for sure!"

"He loves saying that, doesn't he…?"

Takeshi murmured as the Gremory group entered the magic circle Akeno had drawn, teleporting back home.

This concludes Chapter 21. First, in response to your questions.

To Ryukipendragon: Sorry, but I didn't quite get that. What do you mean about me having other anime in mind?

While this was mostly a downtime chapter like I mentioned before, it also featured the debut of Orochi's Sacred Gear, Blight Current. Its design is mostly based on the Viralt Valitsaif from the Madan no Ou to Vanadis LN. Its main abilities are the secretion of Orochi's deadly poison and the manipulation of black thunder, an ability Orochi gained after being slain by Susanoo through unwittingly absorbing and corrupting a small part of the God's aura. Moreover, Pandora has obtained a familiar, while Takeshi failed to do so this time, though he took down a Hydra. Takeshi's familiar will debut later down the line, though it won't be the Skithblathnir.

Well, that's all for now. Next chapter will be the start of the Excalibur arc. As always, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
