Chapter 33 – Turmoil
"Hey! Over here! Pass the ball here!"
"You think I'll let you!?"
"Just try and stop me!"
Such yells mixed with laughter could be heard coming from a small park in the midst of an average Japanese town, where a group of children had gathered to play football. Although they had been going at it for quite some time now, none of them seemed too exhausted, a testament to their endurance.
At some point, one of the children kicked the ball too hard, with it flying out of bounds and heading straight for an old man, who was passing by the area.
"Watch out!"
One of the boys cried out in vain as the ball headed straight for the old man's head. Although everyone was certain an unfortunate accident was unavoidable, the old man surprised everyone by raising his hand in an unexpectedly fast manner and catching the ball with relative ease. The kids rushed to him, some of them whispering among themselves with amazed expressions on their faces.
"I'm really sorry about that, mister!" One of the boys apologized to the old man. "We didn't mean for this to happen!"
"Hohoho, that's quite alright, my boy." The old man smiled, peering over his red-rimmed sunglasses as he stared at the children. "No harm was done, so don't trouble yourselves over it."
"That was awesome though, mister!" Another boy said with an excited expression. "You caught the ball mid-air without even turning around! How'd you do that!?"
"Lots of training and a healthy lifestyle during my youth." The old man grinned, making a guts pose as he returned the ball back to the boys. "That's all there is to it, my boy. Do that, and you'll be just as spry as I am right now despite my old age."
"I see…"
"On an unrelated note, are you certain you should be out and about at this hour, youngsters?" The old man said, pointing at the rapidly sinking sun. "Omagatoki, the time of meeting evil spirits, is approaching. Good children should be back home with their parents right about now…if you don't want to be picked off by some scary Youkai, that is."
"That's just a dumb superstition!" One of the boys said while laughing. "Still, we should be getting back, or our parents will scold us."
The boys nodded at each other and, after bidding farewell to the old man, rushed back to their respective homes while waving at each other.
"Superstition, eh…?"
The old man let out a small sigh as he sat on a nearby bench, dusting off his black kimono and haori as he made himself comfortable. He watched the setting sun with an even expression, seemingly deep in thought, until a voice came from behind him.
"How cruel of you, Hoshi-dono. You warned them even though the end result won't change at all no matter what they do."
The old man turned around, coming face-to-face with a teenage girl that had waist-length black hair, silver eyes and pale white skin, who was wearing a black sailor uniform and matching stockings. Although she was admittedly beautiful, the foul aura wafting around her and her sinister smile, which would have almost everyone who encountered her running away in fright, ruined her good looks. However, the old man was unperturbed by all that as he addressed her while stroking his white goatee.
"Consider it my small bit of mercy." Hoshi said, a grin on his wrinkled face. "They will die anyway like you said, so it would be best if they at least died alongside their families."
The black-haired girl chuckled. At that time, mist began enveloping the town, with a large number of black shapes squirming within. Shortly afterwards, a cacophony of numerous terrified screams echoed throughout town, followed by the smell of blood and burnt flesh.
"Ah, how nostalgic." Hoshi said as he stood up, a wide smile on his face. "I had missed the scent of fear and suffering in the air. This age is truly so tame compared to my time."
"Yes, all this is quite…intoxicating indeed." The black-haired girl licked her lips while smirking. "And to think that soon, all of Japan will regress to this primal state, it fills me with excitement. The Age of Blood will return once again, our gutless brethren will be purged and the Youkai will return to their true origin; terrifying monsters that stand above humans and use them as their playthings. No more skulking in the shadows and being subservient to the worthless Gods of the Shinto Pantheon."
"I will be looking forward to the age you and the other youngsters envision." Hoshi said as the screams started dying down. "Now then, I believe we should take our leave. The Kanto Youkai Faction should have caught wind of our movements by now, and it's a little early for us to clash head-on with them. Even with the aid our 'friends' have given us, it's best to err on the side of caution for now."
"Right."
Hoshi stood up and started walking alongside the black-haired girl, with the two of them vanishing in the mist and leaving behind them a town devoid of all life.
"Look at you go, Takeshi. See, you only needed a bit more practice."
"Yes, falling on my face and butt almost twenty times so far has certainly paid off at last."
Takeshi grinned as he slid on the ice next to Akeno, his form still a little unsteady and crude compared to her graceful one. Taking advantage of a break in their recent busy schedule, Takeshi had taken the opportunity to ask Akeno out on a date in Kuoh's ice rink, something she had agreed to with evident enthusiasm. Although he had never tried ice skating before, Takeshi had been certain he would be able to master it quickly. He was soon proven wrong however after a couple of disastrous first attempts, which had necessitated the more experienced and skilled Akeno's guidance.
"If I had known it would have been so tricky, I'd have come here on my own and practiced like Hell beforehand…" Takeshi grumbled. "I've made a total fool of myself in front of you, Akeno."
"Ara, ara, what are you saying, Takeshi?" Akeno smiled as she entwined her hand with his while the two of them skated. "If you had done that, you wouldn't have given me the pleasure of spending time teaching you. Or the joy of seeing your cute expressions of frustration whenever you fell down, ufufu~."
"Well then, I guess everything worked out for the best then." Takeshi grinned, squeezing Akeno's hand. "If you enjoyed yourself, all these blunders of mine were worth it."
At that moment, another pair of skaters passed next to Takeshi and Akeno, with some words of their conversation flowing into the former's ears.
"…good thing my father's injuries from the hurricane are better. I didn't want to leave him, but he insisted…"
Takeshi's expression darkened at that, something that didn't escape Akeno's notice.
"Hey, turn that frown upside down, mister." Akeno said, peering at Takeshi's face. "How many times do we all have to tell you that what happened during the conference wasn't your fault? And also, that if you hadn't acted when you did, the situation could have gotten much worse?"
"It was still my hand that wrought this destruction." Takeshi countered. "My responsibility. For the first time…I truly understood what 'power to destroy the world' means, and that was just a small portion of Cataclysm Zone's slumbering full potential. If I had let go of myself just a bit more… No wonder I've been having these vague nightmares over the past week…"
"Nightmares?" Akeno frowned. "What kind of nightmares?"
"Like I said, vague." Takeshi said as the two of them skated towards the side of the rink. "They started the night after the conference and have continued ever since. But I can't seem to recall their content. Only the fear…and the pain."
"So that's why you look so exhausted these days." Akeno said as the two of them came to a stop. "Despite that, you took the trouble to invite me to a date and I accepted without paying heed to your condition. I'm sorry, Takeshi."
"Hey, what are you apologizing for?" Takeshi smiled. "All things considered, I've been having a lot of fun being here with you. Staying cooped up in my place wouldn't have helped with my condition. Far from it. That's why, you don't need to trouble yourself, Akeno. I'm grateful that you're here with me."
"It makes me happy to hear that." Akeno smiled back as the two of them took out their skates, sat down and begun munching the biscuits they had brought with them. "Speaking of which, how goes the discussion about the Ryuugamine residence's renovation? Have you and Rias reached a consensus? Because I'm kind of looking forward to moving in with you and us having lots of…private fun together, ufufu~."
"We're getting there." Takeshi said. "I still think six ground floors and three underground ones is overkill, but it's better than Rias's initial plan of having twice the number of floors. Seriously, I tend to forget that she's a noble with a completely different upbringing than ours at times…"
"Trust me, you're lucky she's not her father in that regard." Akeno said. "If she was like Zeoticus-sama, who tends to go overboard in everything, she'd be pushing you to build a castle-like residence the likes of which Japan has never seen before."
"That would have been a real pain in the ass." Takeshi said. "My parents are the other issue. No matter how much I hate using magic on them, we always seem to find ourselves in situations where I can't avoid it. I wish I could just tell them the truth about everything, but it's still too soon…"
"I can only imagine how horrible this must feel for you." Akeno said with a sad smile, placing her hand on Takeshi's own. "Since we are on that subject…have you told your parents about us as well? I would understand if you didn't since it would only cause you more trouble…"
"Trouble is something I'm used to by now." Takeshi smirked. "Of course I told them about you, Akeno, to the extent that I can. Let's just say…they weren't too pleased to hear their son is 'juggling yet another girl like some irresponsible playboy'. I shudder to think what will happen if even more girls come to me in the future…"
"Do you regret it?" Akeno asked Takeshi. "Accepting me, Rias and Koneko-chan, I mean? Do you believe…your life would be better if you simply chose one of us?"
"No, I don't believe that." Takeshi said. "I care for all of you, and whatever hardships we may face down the line, they're all worth it if I can be with you girls. Simple as that."
"Ara, ara, you saying something like that with such certainty is making poor me swoon~." Akeno said with a playful smile. "I might need a certain…pick-me-up before I collapse, ufufu~."
"We can't have that now." Takeshi smirked. "Fortunately, I know just what the doctor recommends for situations like this."
After saying so, Takeshi raised Akeno's chin and leaned forward to kiss her, with her reciprocating with great fervor while stroking Takeshi's hair. Once they had made out to their heart's content, they separated, with Akeno resting her head on Takeshi's shoulder.
"That being said, I'm not looking forward to our fellow students' reaction to us becoming a couple once Kuoh Academy reopens." Takeshi said as he put his arm around Akeno's shoulders. "Closing school for three weeks because of the 'hurricane' was probably for the best. At least I can put off dealing with the Perverted Trio's complaints and whining for a while."
"But still, it would be nice if those issues were our biggest concerns, no?" Akeno said. "Instead of terrorist organizations and Dragon Gods hellbent on destroying the current world order?"
"You can say that again…" Takeshi said with a sigh. "Though I'd add friends who have gone rogue and need to be dragged back to this side no matter what on the list. But one problem at a time. Now then, we should be getting back. It's getting late, which means it's time for the Devils' Job."
"Aw, time really does fly when you're having fun." Akeno pouted. "Shame we couldn't squeeze in a visit to Kuoh's department store. I wanted your opinion on some ideas and materials I have in mind for the Rating Game uniform you requested."
"Oh, you've already started making plans for it?" Takeshi asked with an excited expression. "As expected of my Akeno. I swear, if I have to go into another Rating Game wearing our boring old school uniform again, I'll riot."
"Since we can't have our resident Evil Dragon going on a rampage, I'll have to do my best to come up with something that will satisfy you."
Akeno said with a smile as she kissed Takeshi's cheek. The two of them stood up and packed their bags, with Takeshi wincing upon lifting his due to a stab of pain coming from his right arm.
"Is something wrong, Takeshi?"
"No, no, everything's fine. Just a small cramp."
Takeshi hurried to reassure Akeno with a forced smile as the two of them made their way to the exit. Once he made sure Akeno wasn't looking, Takeshi lifted his right sleeve, glancing at the wide scar in his forearm, the source of the pain.
"Damn thing's still acting up…"
Takeshi grumbled as he rolled down his sleeve. Although he still felt the aftereffects of the forceful awakening of Cataclysm Zone's Balance Breaker, like weakness, cramps, bouts of dizziness and nausea, the most irritating 'souvenir' from the recent battle was the scar he had received from Vortigern after the latter had plunged Ascalon into his arm. Despite the Phoenix Tears and Koneko's Senjutsu treatments, the scar hadn't disappeared. Worse yet, it would give him intense stabs of pain at random intervals, which only served as a constant reminder of his disgraceful defeat at the hands of the Khaos Brigade's agent.
If I want to defeat that guy and avenge myself, I need to become even stronger… Takeshi thought. But on the other hand, if I grow too strong and cause an even worse disaster… No, no, this isn't the way to think. I'll get stronger and better at controlling my powers. After all, I did promise that I would free myself from the stigma of the Evil Dragon User.
Doing his best to psych himself up like that, Takeshi almost failed to realize they had arrived at the parking lot. Once both of them had climbed on his motorcycle, Takeshi started it up and began driving towards Kuoh Academy. After a few minutes, they arrived at campus, which was surrounded by yellow tape and several 'keep out' signs. In the distance, the school building could be seen, with several wide cracks and collapsed sections throughout it.
"Shame Sirzechs-sama and the others couldn't fully restore the buildings." Takeshi said as he and Akeno dismounted and made their way to the old school building. "But it would have been weird if the 'hurricane' that ravaged this town left our school untouched."
"True." Akeno said. "Plus, considering almost every building in the school was vaporized over the course of the battle, this is already a marked improvement."
Takeshi nodded as the two of them entered the clubroom. In one corner of the room, Pandora and Koneko were each holding a manga volume from a new series and were discussing its latest plot twist. Xenovia was sitting in one of the sofas, her head buried in a book about advanced kanji learning, while Yuuto was busy polishing one of his mass-produced swords, a habit of his. Takeshi had questioned him about the meaning of what seemed like a pointless act once before, with Yuuto responding that it helped clear his mind. Gasper was inside his cardboard box as usual, reading a girls' fashion magazine. As for Rias, she was sitting in her usual spot in the President's office and going through some documents. Once she took notice of Takeshi and Akeno, she smiled.
"Welcome back, you two." Rias greeted them. "Did you have fun in your date?"
"Tons." Akeno said with a smile as she took her usual position next to Rias. "Any news from the Underworld, President? Or from the rest of the world for that matter?"
"I'd like to know what's going to happen with our training area now that they've taken down the time dilation barrier surrounding the mountain mansion due to security reasons." Takeshi said as he sat on the sofa, with Koneko rushing to claim her usual spot on his lap. "Are there any plans for a new one?"
"My family is coordinating with Beelzebub-sama for the construction of an underground training space in Gremory territory." Rias said. "If all goes well, it should be ready for use sometime around the end of summer vacation."
"That long?" Xenovia frowned. "Beelzebub-sama's research has allowed him to construct those time dilation fields of his even in the unique conditions of the Underworld now, hasn't it? With that obstacle gone, I thought it would be a simple matter. I was looking forward to practicing more using Amakusa Kaori's advice."
"The delays are due to security reasons." Rias said. "With the emergence of the Khaos Brigade and the Old Devil King descendants that are part of it, we have to make absolutely sure that some enemy agent won't try to sneak in a teleportation magic circle or some other nasty trap. In order to avoid this, my family is conducting a very thorough background check on those involved with the construction, which will take time."
"…Better safe than sorry." Koneko said. "After what happened in the conference, the Old Devil King descendants and supporters will be even more furious towards the current government. We might be targeted since we're related to the current Lucifer's family, so we need to keep our guard up."
"I'm curious how these descendants and supporters escaped in the first place." Pandora said. "I thought that all of them would have perished during the Devil Civil War five hundred years ago."
"Wouldn't that be convenient." Rias said. "It would have spared us all this trouble. Alas, it didn't happen like that. While most of the second-generation Devil Kings were wiped out, their sons and daughters escaped from the Anti-Devil King Faction's armies. Some fled to the human world, while others hid in remote areas of the Underworld. Efforts were made to root them out, but were mostly unsuccessful. Now they are back, and they wish to reclaim what they consider their birthright."
"They should have remained hidden." Yuuto said with a serious expression. "Even with Ophis's snake, Katerea was no match for Sirzechs-sama. I don't think the others will fare any better if they're stupid enough to target our Devil Kings. And if they target us…well, we'll show them that we're no pushovers and cut them down without fail."
"You said it, Yuuto." Takeshi grinned before turning his attention to Gasper. "How are you doing, Gasper-kun? Is your body alright? Any more aftereffects after ingesting my blood?"
"E-Everything's alright, S-Senpai." Gasper said, his head peeking out of the box. "A-Azazel-sensei examined me again today and said there are n-no abnormalities… He s-said that the more I use it, the m-more I s-should get used to it…and there won't be any s-side effects…"
"That's good to hear, but don't push yourself too much, Gasper-kun." Takeshi said with a smirk. "That's my job in this Peerage."
"…Don't joke about this, Senpai." Koneko pinched his cheek with a pout. "It's a bad habit you really need to stop."
"Yes, yes." Takeshi said, rubbing Koneko's head and causing her to squirm in delight. "So, are we going to get started with tonight's contracts, President?"
"In a while." Rias said. "First, it seems Azazel wants to talk to us about something important."
"Sensei?" Takeshi frowned. "I have a bad feeling about this…"
At that moment, Azazel stepped into the clubroom, a concerned expression on his face.
"Speak of the Devil, or rather the Fallen Angel." Rias said. "So, what is it you wanted to discuss with us, Azazel? Your tone sounded a bit urgent."
"I see you still refuse to address me as Sensei, Rias Gremory." Azazel remarked. "Well, no matter. We have more important things to worry about. A situation has arisen, one that might have quite the negative impact on this country. Over the past week, several human villages and towns in the Kanto area were attacked, their inhabitants massacred down to the last person."
"Massacred…?" Pandora said with a horrified expression. "Who could have done something like that? No, to begin with, shouldn't this have become big news already? Or have the people from our side performed cover-ups already?"
"The Shinto Gods, members of the Five Principal Clans and the Kanto Youkai Faction have taken measures to prevent the news from spreading by performing extensive cover-ups, much to the former's consternation." Azazel said. "Erasing all records and memories regarding the existence of these towns and villages is no easy feat after all. As for the identity of the mysterious attackers, it's speculated that rogue Youkai that don't belong in either of the two factions were responsible judging from the lingering aura signatures and injuries left on the corpses. The worrisome part lies elsewhere."
Azazel conjured a small magic circle on his palm, projecting several images. All of them depicted humanoid black creatures with masks on their faces and elongated limbs that held katanas in their hands.
"…These creatures…" Koneko muttered. "They aren't any Youkai that I know of."
"That's because these are creations of Annihilation Maker." Azazel said. "A squad of Youkai was able to catch sight of them just as they were retreating from one of the destroyed villages. Subsequent investigations from Grigori's research department picked their unmistakable energy signature."
"This means the Khaos Brigade is involved in some degree with these attacks." Rias frowned. "They sure were quick to bounce back from their defeat in the conference and resume operations."
"We are talking about a global terrorist organization with multiple cells led by the strongest Dragon in existence." Azazel said. "It's a given that last week's setback would only be a minor hurdle for them, but even I didn't expect they would show up again so soon. Worse yet, disturbances are starting to occurr in the territories of other factions as well. The open conflict we feared of might be coming sooner than we thought…"
"More importantly, how do we respond to these attacks?" Xenovia asked. "I know these atrocities didn't happen near our territories, but we won't just turn a blind eye to them, right?"
"Not to mention, there's a big chance we might be affected as well if the enemy's plan ends up involving the whole country." Takeshi said. "We're not going to just sit back and watch as disaster brews right next to us, right?"
"Sheesh, you youngsters are a bit too eager for action…" Azazel sighed. "Still, you have a point there. We may not know the scope of the enemy's plan yet, but I don't believe it's wise to wait for them to implement it either. Sirzechs and Michael are of the same opinion as well. That's why, I've reached out to the East Youkai Faction and the Five Principal Clans, offering them cooperation from our side."
"And?" Rias asked. "How did it go?"
"Oh, they were very reluctant and downright negative in some cases at first." Azazel said. "The reclusive East Youkai Faction aside, we of the Grigori have had a bit of a…tumultuous relationship with the Five Principal Clans. There was a serious incident four years ago that involved us and them, and some geezers from their side are still holding a grudge. Fortunately, the young clan heads are more reasonable fellows. Eventually, they pressured the others to accept our offer, especially after we presented evidence of the Khaos Brigade's involvement."
"How surprising." Akeno said. "I would have never expected that from the rigid Five Principal Clans I knew of. Are these new heads of them that progressive?"
"Fortunately for us, they are." Azazel said. "Now, we come to the part that involves you guys. Since you've cooperated with agents of the East Youkai Faction in the past and left a mostly positive impression, Sirzechs and I thought it would be best if you headed out as our vanguard for support. A more experienced Peerage should have been dispatched, but there have been several disturbances in the Underworld perpetuated by the Old Devil King supporters, so all skilled Peerages and troops are on high alert. Of course, you have the option to refuse if you think it's too risky. However, know that there will also be reliable support from my side as well, so you won't have to do this on your own."
"W-We're going to be fighting t-terrorists again…?" Gasper muttered, shaking inside his cardboard box. "But more importantly, w-we'll have to meet new people and p-probably go into even more crowded p-places… I don't know if my h-heart can take thisssssss!"
"You're scared more of interacting with other people than facing terrorists?" Takeshi shook his head in amazement. "You are one special guy, Gasper-kun."
"…Scaredy-cat Vampire." Koneko said. "You have to get used to crowds, Gya-kun, just like you have to get used to garlic."
"Eeeeeek!" Gasper shrieked. "Please, no more garlicccccc!"
"What do you say, President?" Yuuto asked. "Should we accept this mission? It will be dangerous, but so has everything we've faced so far."
"I would say yes…but some of us haven't fully recovered from our most recent battle." Rias said, eyeing Takeshi. "I don't think it would advisable to throw ourselves into yet another fight under these circumstances."
"Hey, there's no need to hold back on my regard or treat me like an invalid." Takeshi complained. "I'm perfectly capable of sending any hostile Youkai or terrorist flying with ease!"
"…No, you're not." Koneko said. "I've been treating you, so I know. The damage to your body is one thing, but the loss of lifespan is serious. I don't know what will happen if you push yourself too much again. I'm not even sure if you can fight normally."
"I might be able to help with that." Azazel said. "There's a certain machine I've been developing that would aid in detoxifying Ryuugamine Takeshi's body while also somewhat speeding up his lifespan's restoration. I'll be needing Akeno and Toujou Koneko's help however."
"…Of course."
"While I dislike the notion of working with you…I will do so if it helps Takeshi." Akeno said. "But this machine of yours had better perform, Sensei."
"My dear, who do you think I am?" Azazel smirked. "I may have tons of flaws, but I take pride in my scientific expertise. Your boyfriend is in good hands."
"Well, if Takeshi's condition can be improved to acceptable levels, then I have no reason to reject this assignment." Rias said. "Like my servants said, we can't very well ignore an enemy plot that might end up affecting us as well. When will we be departing?"
"Three days from now." Azazel said. "We'll be teleporting to Mito, the capital of the Ibaraki Prefecture, first to meet up with my agents. From there, we'll head to Mount Tsukuba, the stronghold of the Kanto Youkai Faction, in order to meet up with Nurarihyon and the representative of the Five Principal Clans. We'll receive the latest info from them and plan our next move then."
"Very well." Rias said. "I will inform my brother that my Peerage and I will be heading out to assist the Youkai, and I will let Sona know as well. If all goes well and we resolve this incident successfully, we may be able to convince the Kanto Youkai Faction to join the alliance against the Khaos Brigade. Maybe we can even get the Five Principal Clans on our side in the best-case scenario."
"That's the idea." Azazel said. "The Kyoto Youkai Faction has been very forthcoming to the idea of joining forces with us, and the Shinto Pantheon seems willing to cooperate to an extent. If the other two major forces in this country ally with us, I can't ask for anything more. We can build a solid foundation in Japan that will hopefully be the first step towards the wider alliance between the Pantheons that we envision. But first things first. Come with me, Ryuugamine Takeshi, Toujou Koneko and Akeno."
Looking at Rias, who nodded, Takeshi, Akeno and Koneko stood up, following after Azazel. The Fallen Angel led them into the teachers' office, where he pressed a hidden switch next to one of the bookcases. Said bookcase moved to the side, revealing an elevator with several arcane symbols inscribed in it.
"I see you built your hidden base despite President's objections after all." Takeshi remarked as the four of them stepped into the elevator. "Couldn't help yourself, could you, Sensei?"
"Hey, cut me some slack here." Azazel said with a grin. "It's a must for evil scientists like me to have a secret laboratory or two. Can't go against the norm, or else I'd be mocked by my comrades back at Grigori."
"…Somehow, I think most of them would roll their eyes in exasperation."
Koneko remarked, with Takeshi and Akeno nodding in agreement. At that moment, the elevator came to a stop, with its doors opening. Azazel stepped outside, followed by the three youths, who found themselves in a spacious underground chamber filled with all sorts of unknown machines. Documents, scrolls and books were scattered all over the place, monitors were blinking left and right, and a half-finished sports car with all sorts of equipment jutting from it could be seen to the side, where a ramp leading presumably to the surface was situated.
"This place is an utter mess." Akeno remarked after looking around. "Indicative of its slothful owner, I guess."
"You kids really need to learn to respect your elders…" Azazel grumbled. "Anyway, come this way. The rejuvenation device is here."
Takeshi looked towards the area Azazel was pointing at. A long capsule with a transparent top that was somewhat reminiscent of a coffin was placed there, with several cables connected to its sides. Azazel pressed a button, with the top part of the capsule opening in response, and beckoned at Takeshi to come closer.
"Lie inside." Azazel said. "The capsule will make use of Akeno's custom-made magic circle to purge the accumulated draconic aura from your body in depth, while also utilizing Toujou Koneko's Senjutsu healing more effectively in order to restore your lost lifespan to a greater degree. At the same time, it will perform slight modifications on your body."
"Modifications?" Takeshi frowned. "What sort of modifications are we talking about here? I'd better not emerge from this contraption with a second head or an extra pair of arms. Or worse, turn into some sort of Devil/Dragon Shocker Inhumanoid."
"Relax, I'm not into that sort of thing, kid." Azazel said. "Well, if it was Sahariel or Armaros though, it would be a different story… In any case, the modifications I'm talking about will be performed on the cellular level, with the purpose being to enhance your body's tolerance to the corrupted draconic aura. With enough sessions, you may be able to become completely immune to its adverse effects."
"Now that sounds a lot better." Takeshi said as he laid on the capsule. "Still, if you miscalculated and I start mutating or something, then, girls, I give you permission to fry this mad scientist."
"…Of course."
"That's a given."
Koneko and Akeno said together, causing Azazel to grimace.
"Seriously, show some faith here…" Azazel said. "Akeno, I need you to construct the magic circle with the capsule at its center. Toujou Koneko, go to that device in the side and start pouring your ki into it."
The girls did as Azazel asked while he was inputting the final parameters on the capsule. Then, its top part closed and its interior lit up, with Takeshi wincing a bit. He then let a relieved sigh as he felt a warm feeling spreading all over his body.
"This feels nice…" Takeshi remarked. "Can't believe you made such a complex device in the span of a single week, Sensei."
"Well, to be accurate, this rejuvenation device had already been completed some time ago for a different purpose." Azazel said. "I only made a few adjustments to it in order to handle your peculiar case."
Azazel turned his attention to the monitor for a few seconds, frowning upon seeing the data presented there.
"From the readings I'm getting, I see you ignored my warning and used another Sacred Gear on top of your Balance Breaker again." Azazel said. "There's also the forceful awakening of Cataclysm Zone's Balance Breaker that put even further strain on you. Seriously, you need to stop abusing your body like that. Push yourself too far, and you will inflict irreversible damage to yourself at some point. That means no multiple Sacred Gears active at the same time and no forcible removal of the limiters on Cataclysm Zone."
"It couldn't be helped, Sensei." Takeshi countered. "I was in the middle of a do-or-die situation, so I used everything I had in order to survive and win. Between risking my health and dying without putting up a fight, I'll always pick the former option. Not that pushing myself helped very much in one particular case…"
"You know, there's also the option of running away from these do-or-die situations at times." Azazel pointed out. "Nothing wrong with acknowledging that an opponent is beyond your current level of strength and making a tactical retreat. People who can make calm assessments like that are those who tend to live longer."
"…Good luck getting Senpai of all people to acknowledge that." Koneko said while sighing. "He's the kind of person who absolutely refuses to run away from a fight."
"That would be considered a defeat after all, and Takeshi can't stand that." Akeno said. "As much as I don't like it though, Sensei here has a point. It would be great if you could curb that competitive streak of yours a bit."
"Or, I can hone my strength and skills further in order to overcome whatever comes my way." Takeshi grinned. "That's an acceptable compromise, no?"
"An answer typical of Takeshi…" Akeno sighed, but then smiled. "As long as you keep coming back safe and sound however, I'm fine with whatever you do."
"…Ditto." Koneko said with a small smile. "But we'll also grow even stronger so you can depend on us even more. Right, Akeno-san?"
"That's right, ufufu~."
"Ah, young love." Azazel smirked. "Seeing such a pleasant sight warms this old man's heart…and also reminds him that he's still single after all these centuries. Shit, to think that all my comrades would end up having families while I would be left on the shelf, I can't help but feel depressed now…"
Koneko and Akeno chuckled at Azazel's dismayed expression, while Takeshi showed a sympathetic expression. After almost an hour, the treatment was done, with Takeshi emerging from the capsule and stretching his limbs.
"This already feels a lot better." Takeshi said, clenching and unclenching his fists. "Looks like your machine came through, Sensei."
"Yes, but you'll need several sessions in it before your body is fully restored, and even more to adjust it, so try not to overdo it too much in the meantime." Azazel said. "Well, I guess you fellows should get back to your contracts, and I should get in touch with my colleagues, see if we've got any more leads on the Khaos Brigade."
"Speaking of which, is it really alright for the Governor General of Grigori to be spending his time in this town?" Takeshi asked. "From what I've heard from President, you'll be taking the position of Chemistry Teacher once Kuoh Academy reopens along with being our club's advisor. When will you have time to deal with Grigori's matters?"
"Eh, it'll work out somehow." Azazel made a dismissive gesture. "Shemhazai and the others are there, so it's not like the organization will collapse if I'm not there to give instructions or anything. These guys are super capable, so I can leave things to them for now."
"Sounds to me like you were looking for an excuse to slack off and push your work to your subordinates." Akeno said with narrowed eyes. "You had better not show this attitude when it comes to our training as well, or else there will be serious consequences."
"Damn, that glare is exactly the same as Baraqiel's when he's pissed…" Azazel said with a sigh before turning to Takeshi. "Good luck handling her when she's in one of her moods in the future, kid. Anyway, run along now. This Fallen Angel still has lots of work to do."
"See you tomorrow then, Sensei."
Takeshi said as he, Koneko and Akeno left Azazel's lab and headed back to the Occult Research Club.
Three days later…
"So, when are these associates of yours coming, Azazel?"
Rias asked while looking around. She and the rest of her Peerage along with Azazel had arrived in front of Mito Station a few minutes ago via magic circle, and they were now waiting for the helpers Azazel had said would come to assist them.
"They should be here shortly." Azazel said while reading a travel guide. "Hm, I wonder if I could sneak out at some point to pay a visit to these bars…"
"Please don't look for places to slack off already when we haven't even started our mission." Rias said before turning to Gasper, who was hiding behind her and looking around with a fearful expression on his face. "How are you doing, Gasper? Hanging in there?"
"B-Barely…" Gasper muttered, fixing his new glasses and looking like he was struggling not to turn tail and run. "There's just so many p-people here…and the s-sun is relentless. Why couldn't I have just s-stayed in my cardboard box…?"
"Because you need to get used to crowds sooner rather than later." Azazel said. "Your specs are already pretty high, so if you can get rid of that cowardly attitude of yours that's terrified of everything, there will be a significant improvement. That's why I created these special glasses that restrict the effects of your Sacred Gear for you. With their aid, you'll be able to move among people without fear of your time stop being triggered. Of course, the next step is for you to master Forbidden Balor View to the point where you won't be needing them anymore."
"U-Understood!" Gasper nodded. "It's scary, b-but I'll do my best and obtain a spirit that goes for broke!"
"No, no, there's no need to take things to that extent, Gasper-kun." Takeshi said. "Just do your best at a reasonable pace."
"Y-Yessssssss!"
"Ah, there they are."
Following Azazel's words, everyone turned their attention towards the spot he was gazing at. Approaching them from that direction was the familiar figure of Ikuse Tobio, accompanied by the black hound Jin. Next to him was a beautiful buxom young woman with long flowing blond hair and sapphire blue eyes, who wore a white witch robe with a cloak and a pointed hat. Despite her outlandish appearance, no-one around the pair seemed to be paying any attention to them.
"Hey there, everyone." Tobio greeted the group by raising his hand. "Looks like we meet again. Shame it has to be under such tense circumstances once again."
"Ikuse Tobio?" Rias said. "It seems Azazel wasn't kidding when he said we would be getting some reliable support. And the lady next to you is?"
"I'm Lavinia Reni, a Magician belonging to Grauzauberer and a member of Tobi's team." Lavinia said with a smile. "Nice to meet you all."
"Lavinia…" Rias muttered, and then her eyes opened wide. "You…are the possessor of the Longinus Absolute Demise, no? The fabled Demise Girl?"
"Hm, I really don't like that nickname." Lavinia said with a slight pout. "Ice Princess suits me better. Don't you think so too, Tobi?"
"Of course." Tobio said with a smile. "No matter what anyone says, you'll always be a princess to me, Lavinia."
"It makes me happy to hear you say that."
Lavinia smiled, and then turned her sights to Takeshi.
"You are…Va-kun's friend, aren't you?" Lavinia asked. "The current Evil Dragon User?"
"Va-kun?" Takeshi frowned. "You mean Vali?"
"That's right." Lavinia said. "I'm grateful that you became his friend…and I'm sorry for the grief he has caused you. Va-kun is a good boy deep down, but a little too thoughtless at times. He's always been somewhat naughty."
"That's an understatement if I've ever heard one." Tobio said with a bitter smile. "He's always been proud and cheeky, and that got him into trouble more times than I can count."
"You knew Vali for a long time, Ikuse-san, Reni-san?"
"We first met when he was thirteen, and ever since, he's been something of a troublesome little brother for both of us." Tobio smiled in response to Takeshi's question, and then his expression became serious. "His defection to the Khaos Brigade came as somewhat of a shock to everyone, but I don't believe for a second he agrees with their methods. He must have some other goal in mind."
"Whatever it is, it doesn't change what I have to do." Takeshi declared. "I'm dragging him back to this side whether he wants to or not."
Upon hearing that, Lavinia let out a gentle smile.
"Va-kun has made a good friend." Lavinia said. "I'll be leaving him to you then, Tak-kun."
"Tak-kun…?"
"Don't mind that." Tobio said. "Lavinia addresses people she's fond of with nicknames. Speaking of which, you guys can refer to us more casually if you want to. We're not that much older than you after all."
"Understood, Tobio-san." Rias said. "Looking forward to working with you two. Having two Longinus possessors on our side is very reassuring."
"We'll do our best to respond to your trust." Tobio said. "Normally, I would have brought the rest of my team here, but they're busy tracking the Khaos Brigade's movements in Norway and Britain. The crisis here is important, but we can't neglect the other fronts as well."
"Shark especially was pretty annoyed he couldn't be here." Lavinia said. "But, as expected of a dutiful guy like him, he didn't make much of a fuss about it."
Tobio then turned his gaze to Akeno and spoke with a somewhat reluctant expression.
"You are…Himejima Akeno-san, right?"
"That's correct." Akeno said with a frown. "Is there some problem?"
"Not exactly." Tobio said, running his hand through his hair. "It's just that…the representative of the Five Principal Clans in the Kanto Youkai Faction is the current head of the Himejima family, Himejima Suzaku. I know you probably have a low opinion of our family, even hatred, but I would ask you not to judge her too harshly. Suzaku…she has been doing her best to change the rigid traditions of the Himejima family regardless of the personal cost."
"Wait…our family?" Akeno narrowed her eyes. "Then, Tobio-san is also…"
"Yes, I'm a member of the Himejima family as well." Tobio said. "My grandmother, Ageha, used to be a member before she was exiled for practicing Buddhist Magic, an act which went against the teachings of our family. Since our grandmothers were sisters, I guess that makes us second cousins."
Almost everyone present was surprised by this unexpected connection, Akeno most of all.
"Suzaku has expressed the desire to bring every exiled or shunned member of the Himejima family back into the fold many times." Tobio said. "She did so for me, who was shunned because of my grandmother and my Longinus, and I'm sure she can do the same for you if you're willing. At the very least, I would appreciate it if you could have a discussion with her. She's always regretted not having the power and authority to protect you and your mother from the previous head's wrath."
"I…will think about it." Akeno said after being silent for a few seconds. "That's all I can say for now. Sorry, but all this is too overwhelming at the moment…"
"I understand." Tobio nodded before turning to Azazel. "Regarding the situation in Mount Tsukuba, as expected, many Youkai are not that enthusiastic to have us in the midst of their territories. Some of them have openly expressed their dissatisfaction to Nurarihyon, insisting that the Kanto Youkai Faction can handle this situation alone."
"They're being stubborn without reason." Lavinia said. "All of us working together is the best way to handle this."
"Well, there was that mess a few years back with the Five Principal Clans and us, so I can't blame them for being reluctant to cooperate." Tobio said. "Fortunately, Nurarihyon seems to understand the gravity of the situation and has quelled the naysayers for now. Still, you had best be prepared for a cold reception."
"Story of our life." Azazel said. "Anyway, let's get going, everyone. Our ride is here."
Azazel led the group to a couple of expensive-looking black limousines. He, Rias, Akeno, Lavinia and Tobio got into the first, while Takeshi, Pandora, Koneko, Gasper, Xenovia and Yuuto got into the second. Once everyone was seated and the drivers had taken care of their luggage, the limousines began driving towards the direction of Mount Tsukuba in the distance.
"You've got to give it to the Fallen Angel Governor, he knows how to travel with style." Takeshi remarked as he leaned back on the comfortable seats while letting out a content sigh. "Still, I never expected that we would be getting two Longinus possessors as reinforcements…or that one of them would end up being related to Akeno."
"That was quite the surprise." Yuuto said. "It's a small world indeed."
"D-Do you think Akeno-san w-will be alright…?" Gasper said. "All this must have come as q-quite a shock to her…"
"I'm sure there's quite a bit of turmoil in her right now." Pandora said. "But she'll be fine. She's Akeno-san, our reliable Vice President, after all."
"I'm more worried about the mission." Xenovia said. "Terrorists and evil Youkai is one thing, but I don't fancy getting a knife on my back from our supposed allies."
"…I doubt things will go that far." Koneko said. "Some Youkai may grumble, but I don't think they're stupid enough to make enemies of the Three Factions by attacking us."
"Unless of course some Khaos Brigade agents have put funny ideas in their heads." Takeshi said. "I agree with Xenovia here. Better watch each other's backs until we're done with this mission."
The members of the Gremory Peerage nodded in agreement. After about half an hour, the two limousines arrived at the foot of the mountain in front of an ancient Shinto shrine, with the group getting out.
"So, are we supposed to climb the mountain?" Takeshi asked as he surveyed the mountain rising before them. "Do the Youkai reside at the top or something?"
As if responding to his question, a large torii suddenly rose from the ground as part of the stone wall behind it vanished, revealing a wide opening. Then, a glowing path stretched from the torii, extending into the opening and beyond.
"To answer your question, no, the main stronghold of the East Youkai Faction isn't on the mountaintop." Azazel said. "They've built their city inside the mountain. Now, come along, everyone. Let's not keep them waiting."
The group started walking on the glowing path that led into the depths of the mountain. At first, the only source of light was the path beneath them, but after a few minutes of walking, they could see additional light in the distance. Then, all of a sudden, the group found themselves in the outskirts of a large underground city.
"Woah…"
Takeshi said as he looked around. The massive underground city was comprised of numerous old-style Japanese houses and mansions with cobbled paths connecting them, with an imposing castle in the middle of it dominating the landscape. A large number of floating lanterns scattered all around the area provided illumination, giving off an eerie feeling. The most eye-catching feature however was the large number of Youkai present. Almost every creature recorded in Japanese tradition could be seen here, along with some that Takeshi couldn't quite place. As they passed through them and headed for the castle, several anxious murmurs and whispers could be heard around them.
"These guys…humans, Devils, and a Fallen Angel…?"
"That dog… Don't tell me, it's that infamous demonic hound of the blade…?"
"The one that bears the cursed blade that slays Gods…"
"These Devils have quite the powerful aura…"
"One of them feels like us… A reincarnated Youkai…?"
"There's also the aura of a Dragon… But this foul and sinister aura…"
"Don't tell me…that monster has resurrected again? The Evil Dragon User…?"
"Take the children inside… Hurry… Shouldn't be exposed to such evil…"
The surrounding Youkai's gazes were filled with wariness and fear, something which Takeshi was unfortunately used to by now. However, they seemed to be just as afraid of Tobio and Jin for some reason.
It's probably because of his Longinus. Takeshi thought. I wonder what secrets it's hiding…
The group eventually arrived at the castle gates, where they were greeted by the familiar figures of the Raiju Kumowatari and the Guardian Oni Chiharu standing there.
"It has been some time, everyone." Kumowatari said, a smile on his face. "It pleases me to see that you are doing well."
"It's good to see you again, Kumowatari-san." Rias said. "Shame that we have reunited in a moment of great crisis."
"You can say that again." Chiharu said with a grin, turning to Koneko. "I hope you've been keeping up with your Senjutsu training, Koneko-san. I'd hate to think I wasted my time teaching a slacker."
"…No problems there." Koneko said. "I even picked up a couple of new tricks. But if there is time, I would appreciate it if we could train together a bit more."
"We'll see about that." Chiharu said. "However, know that there's a far more qualified person to teach you here. Whether she will though…that depends on her free time and mood."
Before Koneko could question Chiharu further, another Youkai appeared behind the two of them. This one could pass for a human from a distance, but once one got closer, they would notice his features resembled those of a ferret. In his hands, he held two scythe-like blades. Takeshi immediately identified it as a Kamaitachi.
"Are you two done with your greetings already?" The Kamaitachi said with an annoyed tone. "Nurarihyon-sama, Magari-sama and the Himejima lady are waiting for everyone. This is not the place to be wasting time."
"My apologies, Retsuza." Kumowatari said. "We will escort our guests to the audience room at once."
Retsuza huffed as he turned around to leave, glaring at the group briefly before doing so.
[Envy and hatred.] Nidhogg's voice echoed in Takeshi's mind. [Such a delicious combination. This place is a feast of malice and negativity. Ah, if only I wasn't trapped in this Sacred Gear, I could add despair to this lovely mix.]
Must you always be like that, Nidhogg? Takeshi thought as the group entered the castle, following after Kumowatari and Chiharu. Is it really so amusing to watch people suffer? Does it fill the bottomless void where your heart used to be?
[Heart, eh?] Nidhogg snickered. [You will realize soon enough how unnecessary a heart is. My soon-to-be awake comrade will teach you that lesson in full whether you like it or not.]
Before Takeshi could say anything in response, the group arrived in front of a pair of giant double doors that opened with a creaking sound. Stepping inside, they found themselves in a large indoor garden, with a wide balcony where several Youkai were seated surrounding it from above. On its opposite end, an elevated platform could be seen. Sitting there was an old man with a gourd-shaped head that was wearing a kimono and holding a cane, and next to him was a white calico cat with black spots on its fur. However, unlike a regular cat, this one had seven tails growing from its rear. At the bottom of the platform, a young woman with a slim and voluptuous figure, who had long, flowing black hair, red eyes and wore a formal attire, could be seen standing there.
She looks a lot like Akeno. Takeshi thought. Could she be…?
"Greetings, chief of the East Youkai Nurarihyon and leader of all Nekomata Magari." Azazel addressed the two Youkai sitting on the platform first before turning to the young woman. "Also, long time no see, leader of the Himejima clan, Himejima Suzaku. As most of you know already, I am Azazel, Governor of the Fallen Angels. Next to me are Ikuse Tobio and Lavinia Reni from my organization, and also Rias Gremory, next head of the Gremory family, and her Peerage as representatives of the Underworld. Thank you for meeting us on such short notice."
"Hm, it has been a long time, you crafty Fallen Angel."
"You seem to be doing well, Azazel."
"A pleasure to see you again, Governor."
Nurarihyon, Magari and Suzaku responded thus. Then, Nurarihyon turned to Rias and her Peerage, observing them for a few seconds while rubbing his chin before speaking.
"I have heard about you from Kumowatari's report." Nurarihyon said. "You have my gratitude for helping him and the others put an end to Hisaya's scheme back then, and my apologies for the trouble Chiharu caused you at that time."
"Think nothing of it, Nurarihyon-sama." Rias said. "It was our pleasure to help."
"It's a shame that we have to trouble you youngsters once again." Magari said, her seven tails flicking in a lazy manner. "However, if the mighty Ouroboros and its followers are involved in this matter, then it has already grown into something beyond our capabilities alone to handle. Dealing with the savage Youkai was already a pain, but throwing terrorists into the mix has only worsened the situation."
"So, it's already confirmed that these attacks were the work of the feral ones?"
"Beyond a shadow of a doubt." Suzaku said in response to Azazel's question. "Unfortunately, we have yet to discover the identity of their leaders and the true purpose behind these attacks. The feral ones have always been causing incidents, but never to this degree."
"I'm sorry, feral ones?" Rias asked with a frown. "Is this supposed to be a term for the Youkai unaffiliated with the two main Youkai factions?"
"Ah, that's right, this is a tale you young Devils might not be familiar with." Nurarihyon said. "In the old times, almost all Youkai in Japan were savage and undisciplined, clashing with the humans, and even the Shinto Gods at times. They fed on the humans' fear, using it as nourishment and as a means to increase their power. However, all that changed in the time of Abe no Seimei."
"Abe no Seimei?" Rias raised an eyebrow. "The legendary onmyouji?"
"The very same." Nurarihyon said. "Seeking to end the bloodshed, Abe no Seimei brought together my ancestor, the ancestor of my fellow leader Yasaka, the human Emperor of the time, the leaders of the Five Principal Clans and representatives of the Shinto Gods. In the council that followed, he convinced the Shinto Gods to give their blessings to the Youkai that would follow them and allow them to sustain themselves from the ley lines of the land, and the humans to cease hunting the Youkai. In exchange, the Youkai would cease their attacks on humans and work as protectors of the land instead. Despite some initial disagreements, all parties involved agreed to his terms, which marked the end of hostilities and the start of our two Youkai factions."
"However, there were several Youkai that rejected the treaty." Magari said. "They stubbornly clung to the old ways and kept harassing the humans. These Youkai were called feral ones or savage ones by the rest of us, and they have been the cause of many a disaster. We have clashed many times with them over the centuries, doing our best to minimize the damages they cause. It seems they've emerged once again to trouble us, but, like the Himejima lady said, we have no idea what they're planning."
"I see." Rias said. "In that case, what is our next move?"
"The attacks so far have been centered in the Ibaraki Prefecture, so we've dispatched most of our troops to watch over the rural areas within its borders." Nurarihyon said. "Once the savage ones show themselves again, we'll move out to intercept them, and hopefully capture a few of them for interrogation."
"You've sent most of your troops out?" Azazel frowned. "Isn't that a bit risky? What if they're planning to take advantage of that opportunity and attack here?"
In response to that question, Nurarihyon grinned.
"I'd like to see them try." Nurarihyon said. "We may be old, but we're not helpless, Azazel. If they make the mistake of coming here, we're going to teach them a lesson they won't be forgetting any time soon."
"That's right." Magari said, raising her paw. "These troublemakers are no match for us. You don't reach eight hundred years old by being weak and unskilled."
"Moreover, practitioners from the Five Principal Clans have also been dispatched as reinforcements." Suzaku said. "They're covering both Mount Tsukuba and the borders of the Prefecture, so we can count on them as well if a battle breaks out."
"It sounds like you've got everything covered." Tobio said. "Still, I would like to head out as well alongside Lavinia. Sitting around and waiting for the enemy to strike isn't my style."
"Aw, and here I thought we would get to catch up a bit." Suzaku smiled. "I rarely see you these days, Tobio. It's not fair that Sae-san, Lavinia and the others get to spend so much time with you while I'm left out."
"That's right, Tobi." Lavinia said, wagging her finger at him. "Neglecting Suu-san is a big no-no. She's one of your future wives after all."
"Can we not have this discussion in front of everyone…?" Tobio rubbed his temples with an exasperated expression. "Besides, there's someone Suzaku needs to talk to more than me."
Tobio glanced at Akeno, with Suzaku's expression becoming more serious as she turned her gaze towards her. Akeno seemed uncomfortable and unsure of how to respond. Takeshi rushed to grab her hand, squeezing it in a reassuring manner. She reciprocated with a faint smile on her face.
"In any case, you must be tired from your journey." Nurarihyon said. "Kumowatari, show our guests to their rooms. They may rest there until dinner, where we'll discuss our next moves in further detail."
"Of course, Nurarihyon-sama."
"Before that, I'd like to clarify something." Magari said as she stood up and leapt from the platform, landing in front of the group. "The white-haired girl over there, you are Fujimai's daughter, are you not?"
"…Fujimai…" Koneko muttered. "That's right. My sister had said once or twice that our mother's name was Fujimai."
"Kuroka, eh?" Magari said. "I've heard the rumors and stories about her rampage. She was a mischievous and unruly cat, but I never thought she would perform such a massacre without reason. It's also hard to believe she lost control of herself."
"…You knew Kuroka?" Koneko said, an intense expression on her face. "Was she here at some point? Please, if you know anything about her current whereabouts…"
"I'm afraid I cannot help you there." Magari said. "Kuroka did seek refuge here for a while, but vanished once news of her misdeeds reached us. As for where she is now…that I do not know."
"…I see…"
Koneko said with a downcast expression. Magari observed her for a few seconds, and then spoke.
"You remind me of your mother a bit." Magari said. "She was a talented cat that excelled in Senjutsu, but she also hated violence and fighting, a truly kind and gentle child. You seem like a gentle and well-mannered kitten as well, but you don't seem to be that averse to fighting. How about this then? Would like to receive some training from this old cat?"
"…Training from Magari-sama herself?" Koneko said with an astonished expression. "It would be my honor."
"Then, come find me after dinner." Magari said. "I will give you some instruction then."
After saying so, Magari left the garden. Kumowatari motioned at the group to follow after him, with Chiharu approaching Koneko.
"Looks like you're in luck." Chiharu said. "I didn't expect Magari-sama to approach you of her own volition. She usually doesn't involve herself with such matters, but she must have been intrigued by you. I wanted to speak with her at some point regarding your sister, but she's rather elusive."
"…This is a good chance." Koneko said. "Even if she doesn't know where my sister has gone, perhaps the time she spent here and the things she did might give me a clue."
"I'll give you a hand as well." Chiharu said. "I'll speak to the Youkai I haven't had the chance to yet, see if they encountered Kuroka-san at the time and noticed anything unusual about her."
"…Thank you, Chiharu-san." Koneko said, making a small bow. "I appreciate your help."
After a couple of minutes, the group arrived in front of a large corridor with a series of doors in it.
"These are our finest guest rooms, equipped with all the necessary amenities." Kumowatari said. "If you require something, you can ring one of the enchanted bells, and a servant Youkai will come at once to aid you. Also, your luggage has already been transported inside. If there's nothing else, I guess I'll see you all at dinner. Oh, before I forget, Rias Gremory, Azazel, Nurarihyon-sama wishes to speak to you in private for a bit. Could you follow me to his quarters, please?"
"Of course." Rias said, turning to her Peerage. "Everyone, feel free to relax until dinner."
[Right!]
"Maybe you should take advantage of this chance, Tobio." Azazel let out a mischievous grin. "Suzaku has a point, and it's not nice to not, ahem, give some special care to a beautiful woman like her. You'd be neglecting your duties as her fiancée otherwise."
"Just get going already, you damn perverted Fallen Angel."
Tobio growled at Azazel, with Jin following suit. Azazel laughed as he followed after Rias and Kumowatari. The members of Rias's Peerage, Tobio and Lavinia proceeded to enter their respective rooms, but Takeshi paused before entering his. After mulling things over for a few seconds, he went to Akeno's room and knocked once.
"Who is it?"
"It's me, Takeshi. Can I come in?"
"Takeshi? Yes, of course."
Takeshi stepped into Akeno's room, with the raven-haired girl rushing to his side.
"What's the matter?" Akeno said, letting out a sly smile. "Missed me already? Or perhaps you intend to do something naughty to me now that everyone's busy, ufufu~?"
"Actually, I was worried about you." Takeshi said. "This whole thing about Tobio-san being your relative and Suzaku-san wanting to reconcile with you, you seemed very anxious and overwhelmed from all that. I was wondering how you were handling all this, what your thoughts were and if I could somehow help."
"My thoughts…eh?" Akeno let out a sigh as she sat on the bed. "Honestly…they're a jumbled mess right now. Tobio-san being my cousin isn't something I mind. If anything, I'm a little glad to have found an unexpected relative, someone who was also subjected to the Himejima clan's unfairness to some degree. But when it comes to Himejima Suzaku…I'm not sure what I feel or how I should approach her."
"You've hated that family for so long due to their part in your mother's death after all." Takeshi said while nodding. "Still, if what Tobio-san says is true, Suzaku-san wants to make amends, and she had no part whatsoever in your mother's death. Leaving the matter of rejoining the family aside…don't you think you should at least try to connect with her?"
"I know I can't blame her…and that I should give her a chance if her intent and feelings are genuine…" Akeno said with a small voice. "But still…she's associated with the cursed family that took everything from me… Because of that, my heart isn't ready to accept Suzaku-san, as unfair as that is to her."
"You don't have to force yourself, Akeno." Takeshi said as he sat next to Akeno. "Better to take your time and get your thoughts and feelings in order than talk with her prematurely and end up burning bridges forever by having a heated argument with her or something. I'll talk to Tobio-san about it if you want."
"No…I'll talk to him myself." Akeno said with a determined expression. "Suzaku-san's matter aside…I'd like to learn a bit more about my newfound cousin and his past. Maybe I'll be more forthcoming to the idea of connecting with Suzaku-san after hearing more about her from Tobio-san."
"I'm more curious about the fact that she's Tobio-san's fiancée." Takeshi said. "There should be an interesting story about how things reached this point despite the Himejima clan's attitude towards Tobio-san."
"I'm sure there is." Akeno said as she stood up. "Well, I should go pay him a visit. No use in dragging this out."
"Good luck, Akeno." Takeshi said. "Remember, like I said, I'm always here to help if you need anything at all."
"Thank you, Takeshi."
Akeno smiled, giving Takeshi a quick kiss before exiting the room. Once she was gone, Takeshi returned to his own room. After checking to see that all his belongings were accounted for and that no mischievous Youkai had taken anything, Takeshi fell on the bed, feeling more tired than usual for some reason.
"I hope everything works out for Akeno in the end…"
Takeshi muttered. While he understood Akeno's reservations, he hoped she would be able to move past them and make a connection with her remaining blood relatives.
[…Useless worries.]
Takeshi frowned as an unfamiliar voice echoed in his thoughts. His mind flashed back to what Nidhogg had said to him before the audience with the Youkai elders.
My soon-to-be awake comrade will teach you that lesson in full whether you like it or not…
"Great…" Takeshi grumbled. "As if I didn't have enough to deal with already…"
Takeshi let out a resigned sigh as he lied on the bed, waiting for dinnertime and doing his best to quell his mounting anxiety.

With this, a new arc that involves the East Youkai Faction again begins. This time, the action is taking place in their territories, giving me the opportunity to expand a bit more upon them since canon didn't bother much with that faction. Some familiar faces will also be assisting the Gremory Peerage due to me wanting to have Tobio and Lavinia play a somewhat more active role earlier than they did in canon. Suzaku has also appeared here because I wanted to lay the foundation for Akeno's eventual reconciliation with the current Himejima family, which kind of came out of nowhere in the novels as far as I remember.
Well, that's all for now. Since I have returned back to work, there's a chance future updates might be a bit slower until I can adjust and recover completely from the aftereffects of my treatment. As always, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!
See you all next time!
