Chapter 39 – Gathering

"We have arrived, everyone. Welcome to the Gremory main residence."

Grayfia said, addressing Rias and the members of her Peerage. After arriving in what appeared to be one of the many guardhouses surrounding the Gremory residence, the group had walked for about ten minutes before finding themselves staring at an enormous castle that exuded an aura of splendor and power. Takeshi, Pandora and Xenovia, who had never beheld it before, couldn't help but stand there frozen with mouths agape at the majestic sight.

"Now there's something you'd never see in the human world…" Pandora muttered, turning to Rias. "This is where you grew up, President?"

"For the most part, though I've also spent my childhood in some of my family's more rural houses." Rias said. "Staying in my grandparents' cottage and playing in the countryside with Sona and Seekvaira are some of my fondest memories…"

Rias smiled as she reminisced about past times while everyone followed after Grayfia. Upon arriving at the courtyard, a large number of guards and servants arrayed themselves along the cobbled path leading to the main entrance. Once they caught sight of them, the servants shouted together.

[Welcome home, Princess Rias!]

All of a sudden, a large number of fireworks were set off, while the guards pointed their rifles towards the sky, shooting a volley of demonic power blasts, and an orchestra started playing. Meanwhile, several Devils riding gryphons flew overhead while waving flags with the Gremory family's seal on them.

"Thank you, everyone." Rias said with a wide smile. "It's great to be back. Are you all doing well?"

"…What the Hell is all this?" Takeshi asked with a frown while Rias greeted the servants, with Pandora edging closer to him while looking uncomfortable at this display. "Are they celebrating the prodigal's return after years of exile or something?"

"Ufufu, the Gremory family does tend to go overboard in matters concerning their precious daughter, and this is no exception." Akeno said while chuckling. "Trust me, you'll get used to it after a while."

"…N-No, I don't think I ever w-will…" Gasper said while hiding behind Takeshi, looking intimidated by the large crowd. "There's w-way too many people heeeeeeeere!"

"This festive atmosphere feels strange considering we were involved in a large skirmish not too long ago." Xenovia remarked. "Do they have no sense of urgency?"

"The news of the terrorist attack hasn't been relayed to anyone else outside of the guards I brought with me and Rias-sama's parents." Grayfia said. "There is no reason to cause a panic since everything has been settled."

"I see."

Xenovia nodded as the group arrived in front of the castle gates, which opened with a creaking sound. A red carpet rolled out, with a large number of maids and butlers standing on each side and making deep bows towards Rias and Grayfia. While walking past them, a small silhouette emerged from the line of maids and rushed towards Rias.

"Auntie! You're back!"

Said silhouette was a young boy with short crimson hair and red eyes that looked to be around ten years old. He hugged Rias, with the crimson-haired girl returning his embrace with a wide smile.

"Millicas!" Rias exclaimed as she caressed the boy's head in a loving manner. "You've gotten bigger once again. I almost didn't recognize you."

"President, that child is…?"

"Let me introduce you to him, everyone." Rias said in response to Takeshi's question. "This child is Millicas Gremory, my brother's son and my nephew. Come on, say hello to everyone, Millicas."

"Yes!" Millicas said in an enthusiastic manner as he straightened his back and turned to the others. "I am Millicas Gremory. To those of you I'm seeing for the first time, it's a pleasure to meet you. I hope you'll take good care of my Aunt Rias. To everyone else, long time no see. I hope you've been doing well."

"I'm Ryuugamine Takeshi, President, no, Rias-sama's Pawn." Takeshi said with a small smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Millicas-sama."

"I'm Xenovia, Rias-sama's second Rook." Xenovia made a small bow. "Good to meet you."

"My name is Pandora, Rias-sama's second Knight." Pandora said. "Pleased to meet you, Millicas-sama."

"The wielder of Durandal, the Calamity Witch and the infamous Evil Dragon User." Millicas said, looking excited. "I've heard so much about you all! I also watched the game against Riser-san many times so far, and all of you were great!"

"Someone who hasn't met me before and has only heard rumors was looking forward to meeting me?" Takeshi tilted his head to the side. "First time for everything, I guess… Since he's Sirzechs-sama's son though, does that mean he's set to become the next Lucifer?"

"Since the seat of Devil King is no longer a hereditary position, Millicas is still considered a member of the Gremory family even though he's my brother's son." Rias explained. "He's also next in line for the position of family head after me. Considering his abilties and overflowing talent though, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets nominated for the position of Lucifer at some point in the future."

It's only natural, I guess. Takeshi thought. Since he's Sirzechs-sama and Grayfia-san's son, his potential must be very high.

"I'm still far from measuring up to Father." Millicas said in a modest manner. "Still, I will do my best to live up to our family's name!"

"I'm certain you will, Millicas-sama." Grayfia said, a faint smile on her face as she patted the young boy's head. "Come, we should keep moving. Lady Gremory is waiting for us."

The group resumed walking, with Millicas following after them while holding Rias's hand. After passing through the outer wall and entering the inner castle through another large gate, the group found themselves in a wide reception hall that was lavishly decorated with a variety of paintings and statues, which Pandora observed with great interest. Takeshi wasn't an art enthusiast, but even he could tell that every piece in there was of the highest quality and worth a small fortune.

"Welcome back, Rias, everyone. It pleases me to see that you're doing well…all things considered."

The one who had spoken while walking down the stairs leading to the floor above was Venelana Gremory, the lady of the house. Although she was wearing a simple dress and no other accessories, her natural beauty and charm were as captivating as ever.

[A perfect ten by all accounts!] Orochi said in an excited manner. [Partner, what the Hell are you doing wasting your time with the inferior version when you could have gone for this flaxen bombshell!? Lady like this…heh, heh, I bet you'd be in for a wild ride on the bed!]

First, don't call Rias an inferior version. Takeshi thought. Second, you know she's married, right?

[I fail to see the problem though?]

Of course you do…

"I have returned home, Mother." Rias greeted Venelana. "Have you and Father been doing well?"

"We have…though this brazen terrorist attack has soured our mood quite a bit." Venelana said as her smile became more severe. "While I am grateful that all of you are safe and sound, the fact that these terrorists managed to infiltrate Gremory territory undetected is a cause for concern. Your father is out at the moment, overseeing the preliminary investigation regarding the attempt on your life. Once we have our first suspects…I will make sure they spill out everything they know."

A thin sheet of demonic power enveloped Venelana's body as she let out her killing intent while chuckling, causing chills to run down everyone's spines. Even from this small display, Takeshi could tell that Venelana's power was formidable in its own right.

[You've become part of one amusing family for sure!] Grendel laughed. [Once you finally lose it, I'll make sure to go after them first! Would be fun to see just how powerful they really are!]

That won't happen, Grendel. Takeshi thought while clenching his fists. I won't allow it.

[Considering your pathetic display before, I don't think you're in a position to make such statements anymore, whelp.] Nidhogg said. [It's just as I told you back then. Everyone breaks eventually, and you're no exception.]

"Oh my, I seem to have lost my composure a bit there." Venelana said, her demonic power dispersing. "My apologies for that, everyone. I am sure all of you must be tired after such an ordeal, so I won't keep you here. The maids will lead you to your assigned rooms. Grayfia, Rias, come with me. I would like you to describe in detail what happened today to me."

"Of course, Madam."

"Yes, Mother." Rias said before turning to the others. "Everyone, make yourselves comfortable. I'll see you later at dinner."

Once Rias, Grayfia, Millicas and Venelana had left, several maids appeared from one of the hallways.

"This way please." One of them beckoned at the group. "We will lead you to your respective rooms."

As the members of the Gremory Peerage followed after them, one of the maids, a girl with long black hair in ringlet curls and light blue eyes who seemed to be on the younger side, approached Takeshi, eyeing him with a curious expression as she spoke.

"Hey, hey, you are Rias-sama's Pawn, the current Evil Dragon User, no?" The maid asked, looking excited. "You were amazing in the Rating Game against Riser-sama! Really loved how you kicked that pompous bastard's ass! Also, are the rumors true? Are you and Rias-sama seeing each other? Also—"

"Ariella." One of the older maids spoke with a stern tone. "Cease your blabbering at once. You are being a bother, and such rude behavior is unbefitting of a Gremory maid as I have already had to point out to you several times so far."

"Roger that!"

Ariella said in a cheerful manner, falling back in line. Takeshi couldn't help but chuckle at the girl's jovial attitude.

"…Looks like you have a fan, Senpai." Koneko said. "Feeling happy?"

"More like surprised to be honest." Takeshi said. "Considering what I am…I didn't think anyone in President's house would have a high opinion of me."

"You risked your life by putting on that cursed armor in order to defeat Rias-sama's betrothed and secure her freedom from an unwanted marriage, Takeshi-sama." The older maid said, traces of a smile on her face. "For that alone, every servant in this house is grateful to you. Rias-sama is like family to all of us, and the thought of her being miserable was unbearable."

"That's right, that's right!" Ariella nodded her head in affirmation. "It's just as Lucrezia-san says. We all respect you, so if there's anything you require from us, don't hesitate to ask, Takeshi-sama. Even lewd requests are A-Okay~!"

"Ariella!"

"I know, I know." Ariella said in a carefree manner. "Mouth shut, back straight, eyes forward."

Lucrezia groaned in exasperation, while some of the maids and the members of the Gremory group snickered. After a couple of minutes, once everyone else had been shown to their rooms, the maids led Takeshi to his own room. Much to his surprise, said room was even bigger than his extravagant room back in the renovated Ryuugamine residence. If anything, it looked more like a small house than a guestroom.

"The guards have already transported your belongings here." Lucrezia said. "One of us will come for you when it's time for dinner. Until then, you may rest to your heart's content, Takeshi-sama."

"Thank you, Lucrezia-san."

"Make sure to call for me when you have some time, Takeshi-sama." Ariella said while grinning. "I want to hear more about your heroic exploits, and maybe even some juicy details about your relationship with—"

"It looks like someone is in urgent need of reeducation." Lucrezia said as she grabbed Ariella by the nape of her neck, cutting off her words. "I will take my time to give you a through lecture on the do's and don'ts of a Gremory maid, and perhaps this time, they'll actually stick in that empty head of yours."

"Ahaha, looks like I'm in trouble again!" Ariella laughed, though she seemed nervous. "Catch you later, Takeshi-sama!"

Once Lucrezia had dragged Ariella out of the room, Takeshi closed the door before falling on the bed, letting out an exhausted sigh.

"What a day…" Takeshi muttered while rubbing the scar on his arm. "To think we would be attacked by members of the Old Devil King Faction the moment we entered the Underworld…or that the Ascalon-wielding bastard was the historical Vortigern…"

[You…sound exhausted…whelp…] Ladon said. [Perhaps…you should take a nap…regain your strength a bit…before the banquet…]

"Worried about my health, Ladon?" Takeshi snorted. "Aw, how sweet. If you weren't a deranged Evil Dragon determined to make my life a living Hell by subjecting me to all sorts of horrors in my dreams, I might have been moved to tears. As things stand though…thanks, but no thanks."

[Suit yourself…] Ladon said. [Either way…you can never escape…from me… If you want…this torment to end…there is only…one way out for you… Let go…of your petty attachments…or let them drag you down…to an even deeper abyss…until the inevitable end… Your choice…]

"Right now, I choose to ignore your ramblings." Takeshi said as he reached into one of his bags, pulling out a handheld game console. "I also choose to spend my time beating my record in Hell Zone 7 instead of wasting my time talking to a psychotic lizard."

[As you wish…] Ladon said. [Even I…am not so cruel…as to deprive you…of the few pleasures…you have left… After all…you won't be able…to find solace…in anything…soon enough…]

Takeshi ignored Ladon's words, doing his best to focus on the game instead of his words or his near-disastrous encounter with Vortigern. He spent the next few hours like that until an unfamiliar maid knocked on his door, informing him that the head of the house was back and that it was time for dinner. Following after her, Takeshi arrived at an extravagant dining room, taking a seat next to Rias, who had arrived a couple of minutes ago. She nodded at him with a smile.

The other members of the Peerage arrived shortly afterwards and took their seats, with Zeoticus, Venelana and Millicas arriving last, accompanied by several maids and butlers. From what Takeshi had heard, Azazel wouldn't be joining them since the meeting with the other leaders had dragged on. Once everyone was seated, Zeoticus gestured at the servants, who started bringing in the dishes. After they were done, the head of the Gremory family addressed everyone with a wide smile.

"I am pleased to welcome my daughter and her servants, both old and new, to this house." Zeoticus said. "I am well aware that all of you must be starving, so I won't keep you waiting. Everyone, please enjoy yourselves without holding back."

These words from Zeoticus marked the start of the dinner. Although Takeshi was tempted to gorge at the variety of delicious food before him without regard, he restrained himself. As a member of the Gremory Peerage, he was well aware his attitude had to be impeccable in high society, though that didn't stop him from finding it a huge bother.

Doing his best to remember the lessons Rias had drilled into him, Takeshi began eating with as much skill as he could. Glancing towards the others, he noted that Yuuto and Akeno were eating in an elegant manner, as was the young Millicas. Koneko and Pandora looked like they had a hard time following the proper etiquette due to their voracious appetite, but were doing a good job so far. As for Gasper and Xenovia, the former was eating with his eyes shut while shaking like a leaf, while the latter seemed confused at the various silverware arrayed next to her dish. He couldn't help but pity them both a bit, since a high-class dinner was probably the last place a shut-in and a former Church warrior would want to be.

At that moment, Zeoticus cleared his throat before he began speaking.

"Allow me to welcome all of you once again to the Gremory residence." Zeoticus said with a smile. "Since you are all members of my daughter's Peerage, please think of this place as your home as well. For some of you, the Underworld must seem like a strange and alien land, so it's only natural that you feel lost. However, rest assured that if you require any sort of aid, you are free to ask the servants for help. They will prepare anything you need straight away."

Takeshi couldn't help but smile a bit at Zeoticus' friendly attitude. It seemed the renowned affection that was characteristic of the Gremory clan extended to everyone associated in any way with the family.

"By the way, Ryuugamine Takeshi-kun." Zeoticus said, turning to Takeshi. "Are your parents doing well?"

"Both of them are doing great, Zeoticus-sama." Takeshi said. "They're also very grateful for all the trouble you went through to renovate and update our house, and so am I."

"It was no trouble at all." Zeoticus said. "Since you have done your utmost in matters concerning both the Gremory family and the Underworld, and since you and Rias are a couple now, this was the least I could do for you. Speaking of which, I believe it's about time you started calling me father-in-law, no?"

"Eh, I think it's a little too soon for that, don't you think, Zeoticus-sama?" Takeshi said with a frown, recalling the time Sirzechs had asked him to call him brother. "Rias and I…we haven't gone that far in our relationship yet."

"Takeshi-kun is right, dear." Venelana added from the side. "There is a proper order to those things, so you can't be too hasty. You would be causing problems for Rias and Takeshi-kun otherwise."

"Hm, I suppose rushing into things is a bad trait of us Gremory males." Zeoticus said, letting out a small laugh. "You can't blame me for wanting to see the future of my family as soon as possible though. With Rias and Takeshi-kun at the head, I am certain the Gremory family will move in an interesting direction."

"Again, it's a bit too early for that, dear." Venelana said, a hint of reproach in her voice. "Before Rias and Takeshi-kun can debut as a couple in our society, there are certain steps that must be taken first. To begin with, since Takeshi-kun will be staying here for a while, this is a good chance for him to become better acquainted with our customs. Acquiring gentlemanly behavior and learning proper manners is a must. You seem to have learned a few things from Rias already, but your conduct is far from satisfactory. My daughter has been somewhat lax on that department from the looks of it."

"My apologies for that, but our priorities laid elsewhere, Venelana-sama." Takeshi said, doing his best to suppress his irritation. "Becoming stronger to deal with the multitude of threats and opponents aiming for us was a bit higher on our to-do list than memorizing which fork goes where."

"Be that as it may, you cannot neglect honing yourself in other areas if you wish to stand next to Rias as her lover, and eventual husband down the line." Venelana said, her stare piercing Takeshi. "Not only are you a Reincarnated Devil, you are also the infamous Evil Dragon User, which means you will have to deal with a lot of prejudice and scorn from other nobles. You will receive harsh judgment, so you must be ready to meet our society's standards if you wish to thrive in it. Rias should know this well, and she should have prepared you for that. I am afraid there are no shortcuts to be taken here, and no room for the selfish behavior my daughter has exhibited as of late. The fact that we allowed you to court each other while taking all that into account is already extremely lenient on our part."

"I hope you're not insinuating that Takeshi isn't good enough for me, Mother." Rias glowered at Venelana. "Otherwise, you'd better get ready for this dinner to take a very violent turn. Moreover, I don't want to hear a sermon about selfishness from the woman who forced her parents to acknowledge her relationship with Father despite their protests."

"That's neither here nor there, Rias." Venelana said. "Our situations and respective positions are different, and you know that. With the establishment of the alliance between the Three Factions, you and your Peerage will receive even more focus from various groups due to the big part you played in it and your relationship to Sirzechs. Understand that, from this point on, any shortcomings from your part will have even greater repercussions down the line for all of us. That's why, you cannot leave any opening for your enemies to exploit."

[What an annoying creature she is.] Nidhogg remarked. [Making a fuss over such insignificant matters. Don't you believe so as well, whelp?]

[Yet more chains…are being placed on you…to the point where…they'll surpass our bindings…] Ladon said. [Still think…this life you're leading…is worth all this trouble…?]

While some part of him couldn't help but agree that all this was a giant pain in the ass that would only make him more miserable, Takeshi suppressed it as he placed a hand on the fuming Rias' shoulder before she could retort.

"It's alright, Rias." Takeshi said in a soothing manner before turning to the Gremory matriarch. "Venelana-sama…isn't mistaken here. If learning more about noble society will keep me from dragging you down…then I'll do my best to improve my conduct and prove that I'm a suitable man for you."

"Excellent response, Takeshi-kun." Venelana smiled, clapping her hands together. "Of course, this special training will also include Xenovia-san and Pandora-san, who seem to have several gaps in their knowledge as well. All servants of the next head must be well-versed in etiquette and manners after all."

"How difficult…"

"Kill me now…"

Xenovia and Pandora muttered, looking none too pleased about the prospect of staying cooped up inside a classroom for the next couple of days. The other servants were giving them and Takeshi sympathetic looks, while Rias still looked irritated, but didn't press the matter, opting to squeeze Takeshi's hand as a show of support.

"Well, since that's settled, let's move on to more practical matters." Zeoticus said in a cheerful manner, seeking to dispel the somewhat gloomy atmosphere. "Takeshi-kun, I'm sure your parents would love some souvenirs from the Underworld. Perhaps a castle or two would suffice?"

"Woah, woah, what do you mean by 'a castle or two'!?" Takeshi said in a flustered manner. "Is that some sort of Underworld joke I'm not getting, Zeoticus-sama?"

"Not at all." Zeoticus said matter-of-factly. "Would they prefer a Japanese-style or a Western-style one?"

"Stop it, Father." Rias said with an exasperated tone. "Takeshi's parents are normal humans. No-one gifts a castle to someone else in the human world, at least not anymore."

"Oh, is that so?" Zeoticus said, rubbing his chin. "I guess that makes sense. It has been some time since I last stayed in the human world for a long period of time. In that case, what would make for a good gift?"

"The sentiment alone is more than enough, Zeoticus-sama."

Takeshi said with a smile. After that, the rest of the dinner passed without any further drama, with Zeoticus, and occasionally Venelana, asking questions about the group's activities in the human world and the recent incidents they had found themselves embroiled in. Once they were done, Rias and the others excused themselves, leaving the dining room. Before Takeshi could head for his room, Rias caught up with him.

"I'm so sorry about my mother's attitude back there." Rias said, an apologetic expression on her face. "I know she means well, but the way she tries to get her message across…it can be overbearing at times."

"Don't worry about it, Rias." Takeshi said, caressing her cheek. "I know that your mother says all that because she cares and worries about you. Her words didn't offend me…though I can't say I'm looking forward to these lessons. Still, it's a small price to pay if I can get everyone to acknowledge us."

"It's a pain for sure, but hang in there." Rias said, letting out a sly smile. "I promise I'll make it worth your while later."

"I like the sound of that."

Takeshi smirked as he leaned forward, capturing Rias's lips in a deep kiss that lasted for several seconds.

"Are you sure you don't want me to sleep with you tonight?" Rias said after the two separated, tracing his chest with her finger. "Perhaps give you some…advance payment?"

"Tempting, but no." Takeshi said, a frown appearing on his face. "As things stand…I'm still too dangerous to be around when I'm asleep."

"That's a shame." Rias said as she gave Takeshi a quick peck. "I'll see you in the morning then. I would say rest well, but…"

"Yeah, a good night's sleep has become a precious commodity as of late." Takeshi said with a bitter smile. "Good night, Rias."

After leaving the red-haired girl behind, Takeshi headed back to his room with heavy steps, bracing himself for yet another difficult night and dreading the upcoming horrors he would experience once again.

Three days later…

"I've finished it at last. Even the Church didn't give us such challenging written assignments…"

Xenovia said as she laid down her pen, letting out an exhausted sigh, with Takeshi and Pandora having similar dismayed expressions on their faces as they finished their tests at around the same time. The three of them were inside a large classroom in the Gremory castle, receiving lessons in etiquette and the history of the Gremory family alongside Millicas from a tutor Devil, a middle-aged man with short hair that seemed to be receding on the front. This was a daily occurrence for the past three days, one that only served to make Takeshi's mood fouler. While he enjoyed studying and would find this experience fascinating under normal circumstances, his troubled sleep made concentrating and memorizing all this new information very difficult.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but fighting with our lives on the line might be easier than this intense study." Pandora said with a frown while the tutor was busy scoring their tests, turning to the crimson-haired boy sitting next to her. "Does Millicas-sama have to do this every day?"

"Yes, but this much is to be expected." Millicas said with a smile. "As the future heir of the Gremory family and as Father's son, I must always strive to be the very best version of myself. I cannot call myself a proud member of the Gremory family otherwise."

"Doesn't it get tiring though?" Takeshi asked Millicas. "All this pressure, all these expectations on you, all these responsibilities…don't you sometimes feel it's unbearable? Aren't there times when you wish you could be…well, a normal child?"

Takeshi was aware on some level that this question might be too much for Millicas. However, he couldn't help himself as he felt some kinship with the young heir, or rather, he couldn't help but draw parallels between their circumstances. That's why, Millicas' answer surprised him.

"Not really." Millicas said. "There are some times when I feel a bit pressured, but if I had the choice to be anyone I wanted, I would still choose to be Millicas Gremory. I love my family, and I'm satisfied with the way I live my life."

Takeshi looked at him with newfound admiration. Despite his young age, Millicas seemed far more mature and resolute than several adults Takeshi had come across in the past. At the same time, he felt ashamed for the part of him that hoped Millicas would voice a desire for his life to be different.

"…You are strong, Millicas-sama, far stronger than I thought." Takeshi let out a small smile, rubbing the boy's head. "As expected of Sirzechs-sama's son. I'm sure you'll go far in life."

"That tickles!"

Millicas said while giggling. At that time, the tutor clapped his hands to get everyone's attention.

"I'm pleased to say that all of you have scored high in the history test." The tutor said. "Of course, Millicas-sama had a near perfect score, but the young master, Pandora-sama and Xenovia-sama also did very well. Venelana-sama will be pleased once she hears that."

"Young master?"

Takeshi asked, raising an eyebrow at the way the tutor had addressed him.

"You are the lover of the heiress of the House of Gremory, are you not, Takeshi-sama?" The tutor said. "Therefore, it is only proper that I address you in a manner befitting of your status."

"That may be so, but I don't feel like a master of anything as of late…"

Takeshi said in an almost inaudible whisper, with Xenovia and Pandora glancing at him with matching worried expressions. At that moment, a knock was heard on the door, with Rias stepping into the classroom.

"I see that everyone is hard at work here." Rias said, turning to the tutor. "My apologies if I'm interrupting, but it's almost time for the gathering. I need Takeshi, Pandora and Xenovia to come with me."

"Of course, Princess." The tutor said while bowing. "At any rate, we had finished today's lesson."

After bidding farewell to Millicas and the tutor, the three Devils left the classroom and followed after Rias.

"Don't we need to change for this meet-and-greet, President?" Pandora asked. "An occasion like this requires formal clothes, no?"

"Our summer uniforms will suffice." Rias said. "You could say they have become our trademark outfits."

"That's something I still find very unsatisfying…" Takeshi grumbled. "About this gathering, where will it take place, President?"

"In Lucifaad, one of the largest cities in Devil King territory and the capital of the Underworld prior to the Civil War." Rias said. "It used to be the seat of power for the former Devil Kings, but once their descendants were driven away following the war's conclusion, the capital changed to Lilith in order to symbolize the change of the era. Still, Lucifaad has retained its significance to a degree, which is why so many important functions take place there. The Gremory family's private train is already prepped and ready to take us there."

"The train again?" Xenovia frowned. "Isn't that somewhat risky? We might get attacked again out in the open."

"We've increased security, so I don't believe that's likely to happen again." Rias said. "Even if it does, I'm certain all of us can fight off a few terrorists, right?"

"That's a given." Xenovia said with a fierce look. "My Durandal shall slice them to ribbons if they dare show their faces again."

"For their sakes and ours, I hope they stay hidden…"

Pandora said as the four Devils arrived at the train platform, where Akeno, Yuuto and Gasper were waiting for them. The Gremory Peerage boarded the train, which left the station once the final checks were complete. After jumping through several magic circles designed for long-distance teleportation, the Gremory Peerage arrived at the outskirts of Lucifaad after a couple of hours.

From what Takeshi could see, the city was as large as some of the biggest cities in the human world. Old-fashioned towers, cutting-edge houses and walled manors were blending in together in unexpected harmony, with an oversized palace-like structure surrounded by several spires dominating the landscape.

"That's quite the crowd." Pandora remarked upon noticing the large number of Devils that had gathered near the station. "Does the gathering of the young heirs draw that much attention?"

"That's a given, since most of them are very popular and sought-after individuals." Akeno said, letting out a sly smile. "President, of course, is no exception, with tons of Low-class and Middle-class Devils yearning for her due to her status and beauty. I wonder what will happen once they learn she's taken, ufufu~."

"Rabid fanboys and fangirls after my head…" Takeshi groaned. "Well, it's far from the worst thing I've had to contend with. Anyway, how are we supposed to get through all these Devils? From the looks of it, every street around the palace, or whatever that building is, is filled to the brim."

"We anticipated this, which is why we'll be using the subway." Rias said. "The underground station isn't far from the train stop, and one of the subway's stops is right beneath Pandemonium Palace."

"…We'll still have to go through the crowd for a bit." Koneko said, patting Gasper's shoulder. "Hang in there, Gya-kun."

"I-I'll do my bessssssst!"

Once the train arrived at the station, a large number of black-suited bodyguards formed a tight circle around the Gremory group, exiting the train alongside them. The moment the assembled Devils caught sight of Rias, loud cheers erupted.

"It's Princess Rias! In the flesh!"

"You're as radiant as always, Princess!"

"Over here! Look over here, Rias-sama!"

Everyone's enthusiasm was palpable, along with their longing and desire. Takeshi was tempted to scatter them by force, but suppressed that impulse. Meanwhile, Rias was waving at the assembled crowds with a strained smile on her face as the bodyguards hurried them to the subway station. At the same time, Gasper was struggling not to have a panic attack from the mass of people around him, mumbling 'S-So many Devils…!'.

Once the Gremory Peerage was below ground, Rias let out a relieved sigh before turning to one of the bodyguards.

"We should get moving before someone has the bright idea to storm the station." Rias said. "Is the private train ready?"

"This way, Rias-sama."

The bodyguards led the group to the train waiting for them. After a short five-minute ride, the Gremory Peerage arrived at the station situated in the basement of Pandemonium Palace. Before they stepped into the elevator leading to the upper floors, Rias turned around and addressed her Peerage.

"Before we go inside, I'll say this one more time, everyone." Rias said. "No matter what happens in there, keep your cool and stay focused at all times. Even if you are provoked, you mustn't start a fight with another Devil. Remember, the people we're about to meet are our future rivals, so we can't show them an unsightly image. Our battle begins from this stage."

[Yes, President!]

Everyone responded together before following after Rias.

[Don't start a fight, she says.] Grendel snorted in derision. [How naïve. The only way you can get anyone to respect and fear you is by beating them within an inch of their lives! Then, stomp on that inch with all your might and feast on their remains!]

Keep your psychotic wisdom to yourself, Grendel.

Takeshi retorted as the elevator arrived at the top floor. Once the Gremory Peerage exited the elevator, two staff members approached them and bowed at Rias.

"Rias Gremory-sama and her Peerage, correct?" One of the Devils asked Rias, who nodded in affirmation. "Follow us please. We shall guide you to the waiting area."

The group followed after the employees, and after making a turn at a certain passage, they came across a familiar figure leaning against the wall.

"Sairaorg!" Rias greeted her cousin with a wide smile on her face. "It's good to see you again."

"Rias, it's been a while." Sairaorg smiled back as he shook Rias's hand. "I didn't get the chance to speak with you during the post-Rating Game party. I'm glad to see you're doing well."

"Likewise." Rias said, turning to her servants. "Everyone, for those of you who haven't met him already, this is my cousin, Sairaorg Bael. He's also the next head of the Bael family."

"Pleasure to meet you all." Sairaorg said, his gaze focusing on Takeshi. "This is our second encounter, Ryuugamine Takeshi. From the looks of it, you are still in one piece and have grown even stronger. Excellent. I suppose that's to be expected considering all the battles you and Rias participated in since we last met."

"I can't tell whether you've grown stronger or not, but I've heard from President you've had your share of adventures as of late, Sairaorg-san." Takeshi said. "If I remember correctly, you cooperated with the Fallen Angel Cadre Armaros and the Familiar Master Zatouji to stop the Old Devil King Faction from causing a stampede of demonic beasts and familiars. You also thwarted an assassination attempt on Lady Paimon's life and prevented the old Devil king supporters from seizing a dangerous weapon from the Great War era. All in all, you've also been quite busy."

"These turbulent times demand that all of us pull our weight if the Underworld is to survive." Sairaorg said. "This is doubly so when it comes to those of us who possess great power and skill. Fortunately, my Peerage and I were up to the task in all of the aforementioned cases."

At the mention of his Peerage, Takeshi took note of the several people standing a few steps behind Sairaorg. All of them seemed quite strong in their own right, but the one who stuck out the most to Takeshi was a young boy with spiky dark orange hair and golden eyes. His features were hidden behind a mask, but his sharp gaze had focused on Takeshi for some reason, eyeing him in a manner similar to how a predator eyes their prey.

[What's that bastard staring at with that glare?] Grendel said. [If he wants to pick a fight, I say we indulge him! Get in there and gouge his eyes out, whelp!]

[Strange…] Ladon said. [His aura… It feels…very familiar…for some reason…]

"So, why are you and your servants out here in this passage and not inside the banquet hall?" Rias asked. "Is something wrong?"

"You could say that." Sairaorg said with a fed-up expression. "Things were starting to get rather idiotic in there, so we excused ourselves."

"Idiotic?" Rias raised an eyebrow. "Does that mean the other participants have arrived and are causing trouble?"

"Indeed." Sairaorg nodded. "Seekvaira of the Agares family and Diodora of the Astaroth family arrived before me, and Zephyrdor of the Glasya-Labolas family came in after me. Almost immediately, he and Seekvaira got into some sort of silly argument."

Before Rias could question Sairaorg further, a smashing sound was heard, followed by intense shaking.

"That's why I insisted that we shouldn't mingle before the formal debut…"

Sairaorg said with an annoyed expression as he stepped into the banquet hall with his servants. Rias and her servants followed behind him, only to come across a volatile situation. In the middle of the now damaged banquet hall, two groups of Devils were glaring at each other, their weapons drawn and matching murderous expressions on their faces. One side consisted of human-like Devils, while the other group was comprised of Devils with goblin-like features.

"Eager to start a fight so soon? It seems you have a death wish, Zephyrdor. You know that even if I kill you, the higher-ups will stay silent, right?"

The one who had spoken was a bespectacled female Devil close to Rias's age that was the leader of the ordinary-looking Devils. She had long, pale greenish blonde hair, long slit pink eyes, and a well-endowed figure. Although she was quite the beauty, her piercing icy gaze evoked a feeling of dread.

[Hm, seven out of ten for now, but I'd have to see more before I give my final score.] Orochi remarked. [From my past experience, ladies like her that seem all prim and proper have quite the kinky side once they let go of their repressed feelings. Definitely one to keep an eye on for your harem, partner.]

I didn't ask for your opinion, so keep it to yourself, Orochi.

[How cold. I'm only trying to help.]

"Hah! Don't get too cocky with me! The way you drive all men away, no wonder you're still a stinking virgin like all the women coming from the Devil Kings' families! That's why I went to the trouble of offering you a private 'opening ceremony', you ungrateful bitch!"

Saying so while letting a vulgar laugh was a young male Devil that was the leader of the monster-looking Devils. He had green hair that stood on their end, matching eyes, pointed ears and several black magic-like tattoos etched on his body. Everything, from his looks to his attitude, screamed delinquent from a mile away. Takeshi had a hard time believing this was a noble on the same level as Rias and Sairaorg.

[I'll say.] Nidhogg remarked. [Fellows like him, they're all bark and no bite. I can sense the delicious feelings of envy and inferiority radiating from him, but it's a shame he doesn't seem to have the strength to act upon them. A loud-mouthed small fry through and through.]

Takeshi didn't respond, though he was inclined to agree with Nidhogg's assessment. Glancing towards the other end of the hall, Takeshi noticed a young blond-haired Devil with handsome features sitting down on the only remaining table within the hall and enjoying his tea while his servants surrounded him, as if to shield him from the ensuing chaos.

"This is what happens when you put so many hotheads together in one place." Sairaorg remarked as he took off his coat, handing it to one of his servants. "Pointless arguments like this one ensue. The elders seem to think this is a good thing, but I personally find it a waste of time. That's why, I'll put an end to this farce right now."

As Sairaorg headed for the quarrelling duo, Rias approached Takeshi.

"Pay close attention to Sairaorg, Takeshi." Rias said with a serious expression. "As of yet, among the Devils of our generation, he's number one."

"Number one…?"

Takeshi muttered. He was aware that Rias's cousin was strong, but he had no idea he was the strongest of their generation. Sairaorg came between the two Devils, glaring at them as he spoke.

"Seekvaira, princess of the Agares family, and Zephyrdor, problem child of the Glasya-Labolas family. This little quarrel of yours has gone on far enough. I'm warning you, if you want to go any further than this, then I will be your opponent."

"Don't interfere, you incompetent heir of the Bael—!"

Before Zephyrdor could even finish his sentence, he received a powerful blow to the face that sent him flying. He crashed on the wall behind him and slumped on the ground unconscious.

"You should have listened to my warning."

Sairaorg said with an even expression. Takeshi was astonished by the strength behind that punch, as well as the speed. He was almost unable to follow Sairaorg's moves with his eyes, a testament to the young heir's skill.

[Nice!] Grendel cackled. [Very nice indeed! He's certainly a man worth destroying! Shame I won't get the chance to experience his strength any time soon. After all, the way things are going, we'll bid you farewell soon, whelp.]

"Bastard!"

"Damn Bael scum!"

Zephyrdor's outraged servants, who had been surprised by their master's abrupt defeat, were about to attack Sairaorg, but he stopped them by raising his hand.

"Look after your fallen master." Sairaorg said, pointing at the unconscious Zephyrdor. "That should be your first priority as his servants. Even if you attack me here, you would gain nothing from it. You had best devote your efforts into making your master presentable again for the upcoming debut."

The servants seemed frustrated, but they couldn't deny the truth in Sairaorg's words. Picking up Zephyrdor, they left the hall with hurried steps. Sairaorg then turned to Seekvaira, who flinched at first, but met his gaze head-on.

"I assume you have no intention of pursuing this matter further, right, Seekvaira?"

"No." Seekvaira said. "I'm satisfied with the beating Zephyrdor received. Honestly, what was the Glasya-Labolas family thinking by making a pig like him the next heir? Iryuka would have been far more suitable for the role."

"They didn't have much of a choice in the matter." Sairaorg said. "After the selected heir was assassinated a couple of weeks back, they had to select a strong replacement to send to this gathering in a hurry. Iryuka is skilled for her age, but Zephyrdor is stronger, which is why he was elevated to the position of heir. I'm sure there were other factors involved though."

After saying so, Sairaorg turned to his Peerage and spoke.

"Call the staff here. This place is too messed up for me to have tea with Rias and the others."

A man from Sairaorg's Peerage bowed as he left to execute his master's instruction. At the same time, Takeshi heard a familiar voice coming from behind him.

"Hey, Ryuugamine!"

Turning around, Takeshi saw that the Sitri Peerage had arrived, with Sona leading them and Genshirou standing next to her, a smile on his face as he greeted Takeshi.

"Yo, Saji-kun."

Takeshi returned the greeting. Meanwhile, Sona, who was surveying the wrecked hall, let out a small sigh.

"…Let me guess, that problem child Zephyrdor caused an issue again?"

"Got it in one." Rias said. "Sairaorg dealt with him though before the situation escalated further."

"I see."

Sona said. At that moment, the staff members rushed into the hall, using magic to repair the damaged areas and fix the broken chairs and tables in a matter of seconds. Once they were done, the five Devil heirs sat down on the largest table while their servants stood behind them.

"I suppose we should introduce ourselves once again for formality's sake." Sairaorg said. "I am Sairaorg Bael, the next heir of the Bael family, rank Great King."

"I am Seekvaira Agares, the next heir of the Agares family, rank Archduke." Seekvaira said. "Pleasure to meet you all."

"I'm Rias Gremory, next heir of the Gremory family, rank Duke."

"I'm Sona Sitri, next heir of the Sitri family, rank Prince."

"My name is Diodora Astaroth, next heir of the Astaroth family, rank Duke." The gentle-looking man, who had been observing the conflict between Seekvaira and Zephyrdor from the side, introduced himself with a smile. "I hope we can get along, everyone."

Though Diodora seemed frail and non-threatening, Takeshi was certain neither he nor Rias could afford to underestimate him as a future rival. It was possible he was putting up a weak and unassuming front to lull everyone into a false sense of security. For some reason, Sona seemed to be glaring at Diodora, glancing at his servants from time to time. Takeshi couldn't see anything wrong with them apart from the fact that they all had the same expressionless look on their faces.

Perhaps that's the problem?

"Uwa, so many bigshots gathered in one table…" Genshirou muttered with an awed expression as the five heirs made small talk. "If you include the absent Zephyrdor, all of them are related to the current Devil Kings and the two most prominent Pillars among the seventy-two."

"Right, Astaroth is the family the current Beelzebub comes from, while the current Asmodeus is a member of the Glasya-Labolas family." Takeshi said. "Even so, we, President's Peerage, will defeat anyone who stands in our way regardless of their background for the sake of our dreams. Isn't that the same for you, Saji-kun?"

"That's right." Genshirou said while nodding. "To reach our goals, we'll have to overcome any obstacles in our way. Still, to declare that in such a resolute way, I can't help but be a little envious of you, Ryuugamine. Attitude like this is why you're Rias-senpai's pride. If only I can become Student President's prided servant, I…"

"You have no reason to be envious of me…"

Takeshi whispered, his dispirited voice too low for anyone to hear. At that moment, a door at the other end of the hall opened and an employee walked.

"My apologies for making all of you wait." The employee said. "Come this way please. Everyone is waiting for you."

Every Devil in the room followed after the man, who led them into a large chamber that resembled an auditorium. Seated around the room in elevated seats were a large number of distinguished-looking Devils, who were peering down on the young Devils with evident curiosity. Zephyrdor, who had recovered in the meantime, had also joined everyone, though the swelling in his face hadn't gone down at all.

Turning his gaze to the highest level, Takeshi took note of the four thrones placed there and the individuals occupying them. Sirzechs was sitting in one of them, while Serafall sat on the one next to him, wearing a formal outfit instead of her usual magical girl costume. The other two thrones were occupied by two unfamiliar faces. One of them was a well-built bald man with a small goatee on his chin and an expression of absolute boredom on his face, who seemed like he was about to fall asleep on his chair. The other was a handsome young man with light blue eyes, swept-back green hair and a sharp, inquisitive gaze.

These two must be Falbium Asmodeus-sama and Ajuka Beelzebub-sama. Takeshi thought. This youth gathering must be pretty important if all our leaders are present.

At that moment, the six heirs took a step forward, with their servants lining up behind them.

"Welcome, young Devils who shall shoulder the burden of the next generation." One of the noble Devils spoke with a solemn voice while clasping his hands together. "As tradition dictates, we have gathered you here today so that all of us may look upon the faces of our most promising youth and hear their ambitions for the future."

"They seem to have fought right away though…" Another Devil remarked with a sarcastic smile. "Young ones like them sure love being unruly."

"The six of you are all Devils with pedigree and prodigal ability that no objection can be raised against." Sirzechs said, ignoring the noble's words. "For that reason, I want you to compete against each other before your official debuts to foster even greater growth. After all, you are the future of the Underworld."

"Will we be dispatched in more official missions against the Khaos Brigade?" Sairaorg asked. "This seems like the most effective use of our power."

"I can't tell what the future will bring, but from my part, I would like to keep you young Devils out of the battlefield for as long as possible."

"Why, Lucifer-sama?" Sairaorg asked with a frown. "We may be young, but we also bear the same responsibilities as everyone else. Some of us have already proven our abilties in real combat and can handle ourselves. If we keep relying on our predecessors even in moments of great crisis, we won't be able to—"

"I understand what you want to say, Sairaorg." Sirzechs cut off Sairaorg's words. "Rest assured that I'm not doubting your abilties or your bravery. I am well aware that both you and Rias were involved in several incidents already and performed admirably. However, I would like you to understand this; if by any chance we lost you young ones, it would be a tremendous blow to the Underworld as a whole. That's why I want to avoid relying too much on you, who are still in the middle of your growth, for now. I would like you to experience things step by step and grow at your own pace."

"I understand…"

Sairaorg said, though he still seemed dissatisfied.

[What a joke.] Grendel snorted. [If you young ones are so easy to break, then there's no future for you! Coddling is for weaklings! Only by devouring the lives of others on the battlefield can you attain true growth and power!]

Speaking from experience, I suppose?

[You bet I am.] Grendel said. [I broke through my shackles and obtained true power only when I defeated and devoured the chief of the Wendigo tribes as a young Dragon back in my homeland, the region you humans call Great Lakes or something, after a harrowing battle. I can still taste the remains of its frozen heart as it slid down my throat, the ecstasy I felt when consuming every last bit of flesh from its corpse!]

[Then you went completely insane by absorbing the spirit of the Wendigo chieftain and massacred your own tribe, the ones you were supposed to protect, along with your enemies.] Orochi said while chuckling. [Not to mention, you're pretty much responsible for Dragons in North America almost going extinct. Can't leave the most interesting parts of the story out, Grendel!]

[Bah, these weaklings deserved their fate!] Grendel said. [My father, siblings and the rest, all of them pathetic cowards to the end! The only thing I'm grateful to them for is the forbidden ritual they conducted to graft the scales of our deceased brethren into my own before the fight with the united Wendigo tribes, granting me these nigh-indestructible scales. The agony of that day, the sweet, sweet pain of having your body ripped apart and then reconstructed…it sends shivers down my very soul!]

[How ironic.] Nidhogg said. [Grendel's tribe sought to create a champion to protect them from their enemies, only to forge the instrument of their destruction in the end. Seems to me like you and Grendel have more in common that you thought, whelp. He once put duty and familial ties above all else, voluntarily putting himself through excruciating pain in the service of others like you, and look where that got him.]

The more I learn about you guys, the more disgusted I feel by your existence. Takeshi thought, doing his best to make his revulsion felt. Deranged monsters like you should have never been born in the first place. So many lives destroyed because of you. If there was any justice in this world, you would have been obliterated long ago!

[Perhaps…but keep in mind…that you only stand here today…because of us…] Ladon said. [Without our power…you are nothing… Then again… you are about…to become nothing…because of us…so I suppose…that evens things out… If I were you…I wouldn't waste…the precious little time…I have left…being indignant about things…beyond my control…]

Takeshi was unable to retort to that. As such, he tuned out the Evil Dragons once again, returning his focus back to the gathering. The majority of the seated nobles had offered greetings and congratulatory statements, and now it was time for Sirzechs' closing statement.

"My apologies for keeping you with this long talk." Sirzechs said. "If there's something you choose to take away from today, let it be this; we see our dreams and hopes in all of you, the treasure of the Underworld. Now then, before we end this gathering, could you let us hear your respective future goals and aspirations?"

The first to respond to Sirzechs' question was Sairaorg.

"My dream is to become a Devil King."

[Hoh…?]

Needless to say, most people present were surprised by Sairaorg's declaration.

"A Devil King, you say?" One of the nobles said while leaning forward. "Even though it's unprecedented for a Devil from the Great King Bael clan to leave it?"

"When the people of the Underworld feel there's no choice but for me to become a Devil King, I will become one."

Sairaorg spoke with a firm expression, his fierce gaze indicating his unyielding will. Takeshi couldn't help but be impressed with his attitude.

His resolve is the real deal. Takeshi thought. He's going to be a difficult opponent for sure…

"My goal is to become the next Rating Game Champion, and also ensure the prosperity of the Gremory family as its future head."

Rias spoke with an expression matching that of Sairaorg, prompting Sirzechs to let out a small smile.

"I wish to one day succeed my father as head of the Agares clan and work towards preserving the Underworld's stability like he does."

"I'm going to be the strongest Devil there ever was!"

"As the next head of the Astaroth family, I want to increase my family's influence, and I also want to support the Underworld to the best of my abilities."

Seekvaira, Zephyrdor and Diodora announced their goals like that. Finally, it was Sona's turn.

"I wish to build a school for Rating Games in the Underworld."

The assembled nobles seemed confused at her statement judging from their expressions.

"There already is a school that teaches about Rating Games though?" One of the nobles said. "I do not believe a second one is required at this point in time."

"That school only accepts High-class Devils as its students." Sona said. "The one I wish to build will allow Low-class and Reincarnated Devils to enroll without discrimination."

Takeshi was surprised by this unexpected goal from Sona. He would have never figured her dream was something as revolutionary as that. Behind her, Genshirou and the other members of her Peerage were looking at her with expressions of admiration, while Serafall was nodding in an excited manner while saying 'That's my Sona-chan!'. However, the boisterous laughter from the assembled nobles that echoed throughout the hall spoiled the pleasant atmosphere.

"That's impossible!"

"This is just brilliant!"

"I see! You're a little girl who dreams!"

"It's good to be young! However, for the next head of the Sitri family to state such a ridiculous dream, I have to say thank goodness that it was here at this place of introduction before your debut."

As expected from the Underworld's stuck-up nobility…!

Takeshi thought, clenching his fists and doing his best to reign in his anger. While he wouldn't exactly call Sona a friend, with rival being the closest approximation of their relationship, seeing her being laughed at like that made him want to take out Mayhem Striker and start hacking. He was painfully aware of the fact that, barring a few exceptions like the Gremory family, noble Devils looked down on the commoner and Reincarnated Devils, doing their best to ensure they would remain firmly under their heel. Sona's dream went against the conventions shared by a large portion of the Underworld, hence the reaction of the assembled nobles.

"I am serious."

Paying no heed to their derisive stares, Sona said so. The way she retained her composure was admirable from Takeshi's point of view. Most likely, she had anticipated such a reaction, and yet she still had the courage to announce her dream.

"Lady Sona Sitri, Low-class and Reincarnated Devils are selected based on their abilties in order to serve their High-class masters." One of the nobles said with narrowed eyes. "A teaching institution like the one you propose is not only unnecessary for them, but also potentially dangerous for our aristocratic society down the line. Even if the Underworld has entered a period of change like some Devils claim, said change can have negative consequences if not handled with care. That dream of yours falls under that category, which is why it won't be allowed."

"You bastards…" Genshirou muttered with an outraged expression, and then spoke with a louder voice. "Why are you looking down on Student President's, no, Sona-sama's dream!? Why are you deciding on your own that it won't come true!? We're all serious here!"

"Keep your opinions to yourself, young Reincarnated Devil." The same noble looked at Genshirou with cold eyes. "Lady Sona, your servant still lacks training from the looks of it."

"I apologize for his outburst." Sona said, making a small bow. "I will admonish him for that later."

"Why, Student President!?" Genshirou complained. "Why aren't you saying anything!? These people are mocking your, no, our dream!"

"Be silent, Saji." Sona said. "This isn't the place where you can display such an attitude. I only announced my future goal to everyone. That is all."

Genshirou still seemed furious, but swallowed back his complaints. Takeshi found his reaction understandable. If someone slandered Rias in such a manner, he would have trouble holding back as well.

[Hm, looks like I need to bump up that girl's ranking by one or two points.] Orochi said. [Despite appearances, she's got a lot of fire in her, that one!]

"In that case!" Serafall shouted all of a sudden. "If my cute Sona-chan triumphs in the games, all of you won't have any complaints, right!? After all, one can accomplish tons of things by showing good results in the Rating Game!"

Everyone was surprised by Serafall's sudden outburst and suggestion. The furious Serafall didn't stop there as she kept talking.

"You stinky old fossils are ganging up to bully my Sona-chan!" Serafall said with a downright murderous expression on her face. "Even I have my limits, you know!? If you want to bully her so much, then I'll torment you back as well!"

Some of the nobles appeared intimidated by Serafall's attitude, while others didn't seem certain on how to react. As for Sona, she was covering her face, feeling embarrassed by her sister's attitude.

"That's perfect then. Why don't we have Sona and Rias face each other in a Rating Game?"

The one who had suggested that was Sirzechs, prompting everyone to let out surprised gasps. Sona and Rias looked at each other with astonished expressions, while their respective servants also seemed bewildered. Paying no heed to everyone's reactions, Sirzechs kept speaking.

"We were already planning to conduct the first match of the Youth Rating Game Tournament within the next month." Sirzechs said. "Azazel has been busy inviting Rating Game enthusiasts from the other factions to watch it, and the only detail left was deciding the participants. That's why, let's have these two confront each other and demonstrate their respective resolves there."

Rias took a deep breath following Sirzechs' announcement before turning to Sona, a fearless smile on her face.

"To think that you would be my first opponent, I can't help but feel that this is fate, Sona." Rias said. "However, the one who will be the winner at the end is me."

"Don't be too sure about that, Rias." Sona said with evident fighting spirit. "Now that we're fighting for real, there's no way I can lose."

Both heiresses glared at each other, metaphorical sparks flying between them.

"Good call, Sirzechs-chan~!" Serafall said in an enthusiastic manner. "A match between Sona-chan and Rias-chan will fire things up for sure~!"

"The date of the match will be at the twentieth of August human world time." Sirzechs said. "Until then, you are free to prepare yourselves in any way you see fit. Further details will be sent to your groups later."

Like that, the Rating Game between the two groups of Devils controlling Kuoh Academy was decided.

Later…

"I see. You'll be having a showdown with the Sitri group then."

Azazel said while lying back on an expensive couch. Once the Gremory group had returned from Lucifaad, Azazel had gathered them in one of the Gremory castle's living rooms to discuss about the upcoming Rating Game.

"Since today is the twenty-eighth of July in the human world, we have about twenty days for training." Azazel said. "Of course, since both teams will be using Ajuka Beelzebub's time dilation fields during their training, that time will be extended by a significant amount. The plan is for all of you to start your training tomorrow. I've already come up with a training menu for each of you."

"For us to receive aid from the Fallen Angel Governor, isn't that kind of unfair…?"

"Not at all." Azazel said in response to Pandora's question. "Both us in Grigori and the folks at Heaven intend to offer their aid to any Devil who wishes to grow stronger. The rest is up to them. If they are serious about improving themselves, they'll accept any help wholeheartedly. In fact, Shemhazai himself is advising the Sitri group for the upcoming game. Since a skilled fellow like him is on the enemy's side, winning the match might be difficult without my help."

"Sona will be coming at us with everything she's got." Rias said. "I hope your training schedules have taken that into account."

"I assure you I've done the best I can from my side." Azazel said. "The rest is up to you, kids."

At that moment, Grayfia stepped into the room.

"Pardon me for the interruption." Grayfia said. "I wished to inform you that the hot springs are almost ready for your use."

"Oh, good going, Grayfia!" Azazel said with a grin. "I've heard that the Gremory family has some of the best hot springs in the Underworld. I'm looking forward to experiencing them myself."

"A warm bath sounds pretty nice after such a tense evening." Takeshi said. "I'll be going ahead, everyone."

"I'm coming with—"

"You stay here with me for a bit, Kiba Yuuto, Gasper Vladi." Azazel said, a mischievous smile on his face as he grabbed the two youths' shoulders. "I want us to have a little chat regarding your training."

Takeshi found this a bit suspicious, but paid no further heed to it. Leaving the room, he headed straight for the baths. Taking a quick shower first, he wrapped a towel around his waist before going to the male section of the hot springs. Submerging his body inside the water, he let out a blissful sigh.

"Ah, that hit the spot…" Takeshi muttered as he leaned back, closing his eyes. "Just what I needed to relax a bit after such a tiring day. But to think we'd fighting against Student President of all people…"

The normal Takeshi would have been overjoyed at this turn of events. After suffering so many defeats at the hands of the Student President, this was his big chance to get one over her in a serious competition, since the dodgeball game they had played during the sports festival hardly counted for him. However, the current Takeshi was more preoccupied with his own issues.

"Can I overcome my doubts and fears with this training…or will they consume me…?"

Takeshi murmured while looking at his hands. At that moment, he heard the voices of Azazel, Yuuto and Gasper in the distance. The odd thing was that they seemed to be coming from the other side of the wall separating the men's section of the bath from that of the women's section.

Don't tell me…!

"Ara, you're here too, Takeshi?"

Turning around in haste, Takeshi saw the girls of the Gremory Peerage approaching him, with Rias in the lead. All of them were naked as the day they were born, with drops of water dripping from their flushed bodies, giving them a highly sensual appearance.

"W-What are you doing in the girls' bath, Takeshi!?" Pandora shrieked, her face beet red as she rushed to hide her private parts. "You may be in a relationship with President, Akeno-san and Koneko-san, but that doesn't mean you can barge in here whenever you feel like it!"

"…Is Senpai losing control of his perverted side?" Koneko wondered. "Couldn't resist the thought of seeing us naked in the bath?"

"That's not it!" Takeshi complained as he turned away from the girls in haste. "I'm innocent here! That bastard Azazel set me up! He probably switched the signs for the baths before I headed in!"

"What, you didn't like my surprise?" Azazel said while guffawing from the other side. "Consider it my gift to you, since you won't be seeing these girls for quite some time after your training begins."

"I don't remember asking for anything like that though!?" Takeshi shouted as he stood up, spreading his wings. "Once I get there, you'd better get yourself ready for the beating of a lifetime, Sensei!"

"Ara, ara, there's no need to be so hasty, Takeshi." Akeno smiled as she grabbed Takeshi's hand, squeezing it in between her breasts while she gave him a deep kiss. "Since you're here, you might as well enjoy the hot springs together with us, ufufu~."

"Like Azazel said, we won't see each other for quite some time, so this is a good chance." Rias said with a grin, leaning on Takeshi's other side and caressing his back. "Let me recharge as much as possible while you're here. This might alleviate the loneliness I will surely feel."

"…I'll miss Senpai a lot as well." Koneko said as she embraced Takeshi from the front, nuzzling his chest while enveloping herself in a thin sheet of ki. "You're sure to push yourself during training, so I'll restore as much of your lifespan as I can tonight."

"Girls, I'm grateful for your feelings, but the others—"

"Don't hold back on my account." Xenovia said as she submerged herself a short distance away from the four of them. "Takeshi has already seen my naked body before, so I don't mind being here with him like this."

"…First time I'm hearing this." Koneko said, staring at Takeshi. "When did that happen?"

"Back when we were cleaning the pool." Takeshi said. "There was a bit of misunderstanding on Xenovia's part. More importantly, even if Xenovia is alright, Pandora is still here."

"Yes, but if I complain now, I'll come across as the unreasonable one…" Pandora muttered, a thin sheet of mist that she had created with her powers surrounding her body. "You can stay here, but don't you dare look in this direction! I won't forgive you if you try to peek at me!"

"I understand." Takeshi said as he leaned back with a small smile on his face. "Since everyone has said that much, I would be ungrateful if I didn't enjoy this feast. However, I'm still going to kick your ass for that later, Sensei! Also, why didn't you stop him, Yuuto!? The timid Gasper-kun is one thing, but I thought you'd give me a heads-up at least!"

"Sensei got to us before we could do anything." Yuuto's apologetic voice came from the other side of the wall while Gasper cried out 'I-I'm sorrrrrrrrry~!'. "All things considered though, perhaps this will be a good experience for you before training starts, Takeshi-kun."

[Yes…you should enjoy…one of the last tastes of heaven…you'll get…] Ladon's voice echoed in Takeshi's thoughts. [Because after that…you'll fall…straight into the depths of Hell…]

Takeshi did his best to push both Ladon's voice and his own fears aside for now, opting to enjoy the current situation as much as he could.

The next day…

"Good, looks like everyone's here. Then, let's begin."

Azazel said while looking at the members of the Gremory group. Everyone had gathered in a corner of the vast garden within the castle, wearing their jerseys. Taking out his notes, Azazel spoke.

"I've consulted with Grayfia, who oversaw your training before the Rating Game against Riser Phenex, and made my own observations by watching you fight during the conference and the crisis at Ibaraki." Azazel said. "By taking all the data I've gathered into account, I've come up with ways for each of you to improve your fighting styles. Bear in mind that some of you might not see immediate results, but the training you do here will definitely aid in your growth. Now then, first is Rias."

Azazel turned to Rias, who stared at him with an attentive gaze.

"Honestly, I don't have any major complaints or suggestions that you don't already know." Azazel said. "Not only are you a powerful Devil, you also possess two clan traits, an extremely rare case among descendants of the seventy-two Pillars. That's why, I'll have you focus on basic training and studying about Rating Game and battlefield tactics. Grayfia must have mentioned this to you before, but the King's most important aspect is the ability to make calm and rational decisions on the battlefield. It's also imperative that they bring out the full potential of their servants when fighting, otherwise it's all meaningless."

"I understand."

"Regarding your problems with Lock Control, Zeoticus has agreed to assist you in further acclimating to it." Azazel continued. "Venelana will do the same with the Power of Destruction, helping you to further refine your control over it."

"Is that alright though?" Rias frowned. "My parents are both quite busy with the daily affairs of the family. I'm not sure they have the time to help me practice."

"Both of them said there's no problem, especially when considering the properties of the time dilation barriers you guys are going to be in." Azazel said. "Next is Akeno."

"…Yes."

Akeno spoke with a sullen expression. As usual, associating with Azazel brought out the worst in her.

"While your decision to accept your Fallen Angel side after years of suppressing it is commendable, there is still a lot of room for improvement." Azazel said. "You've shown some creativity in using your abilties, but from what I've seen, you still can't regulate your output properly. As a result, you're wasting too much energy and tend to exhaust yourself faster than normal. An opponent can take advantage of that by focusing on hit-and-run tactics, wearing you down before eliminating you."

"How am I supposed to fix that?"

"By doing something which I know you'll despise." Azazel said. "However, there's no other way if you want to address your shortcomings. You'll receive training directly from Baraqiel, who is fortunately available at this period of time."

"You can't be serious about that!" Akeno shouted, her outrage palpable. "Me receiving instruction from that sorry excuse for a parent!? Not in a million years!"

"It's the only reliable way to fix the flaws in your techniques and refine them even further." Azazel insisted. "You don't have to get along with him or work out your differences at this point in time. Just put aside your resentment for now and use his knowledge to the fullest for your benefit, as well as that of your master and your comrades. Can you do that much, Queen of the Gremory group?"

Akeno looked like she had swallowed something really bitter, but eventually nodded in a reluctant manner.

"…I don't like this one bit, but it's for everyone's sake…so I'll tolerate Baraqiel's presence." Akeno said. "He had best mind the way he speaks to me though, otherwise I can't promise to control myself."

"I'll be sure to let Baraqiel know." Azazel said. "Moreover, during your training, I want you to evolve and expand your skillset even further by branching out to electromagnetism. This should make your fighting style even more versatile by giving you access to several new options during combat. Baraqiel can also instruct you there to a degree, though he always had issues in that area. If you work hard enough, perhaps you'll be able to surpass him and accomplish what he couldn't?"

"That's a given." Akeno said with evident fighting spirit. "I will definitely surpass that man."

"Nice resolve." Azazel grinned. "Next is the Bishop Gasper."

"Y-Yessssssssss!"

"Sheesh, you don't have to act so scared over every little thing." Azazel said. "That's your biggest weakness for now. You have a solid base, what with your Sacred Gear, Vampire abilities and Devil magic, so fixing the issues with your fragile mentality should be your priority for now. It's very likely that such an attitude will dull your movements and limit your performance on the battlefield. That's why, you'll be training in a small town with several servants of the Gremory family, their families and acquaintances who have agreed to stay inside the barrier being present there. Get used to being around them for starters."

"Y-Yes!" Gasper said. "It sounds s-scary, but I'll do my bessssssssst!"

After saying so, Gasper rushed inside his carboard box while trembling. It seemed the prospect of being around a large crowd twenty-four-seven was indeed frightening for the young Dhampir.

"Also, you'll be working on your Sacred Gear as well." Azazel continued. "Your Forbidden Balor View has demonstrated some exceptional abilties that go above and beyond those exhibited by past users. However, you still lack proper control over it without using Takeshi's blood. Moreover, if you keep ingesting it too often, apart from the potential danger to your body, there's also a chance for a power overload that could have catastrophic consequences. Because of that, you most likely won't be allowed to use his blood in the game, and while on the battlefield, you should rely on it only if there's no other choice."

"T-That might be for the b-best…" Gasper's voice came from the cardboard box. "I hate drinking b-blood after all… N-Not that there's anything wrong with your blood specifically or anything, T-Takeshi-senpai!"

"Don't worry, Gasper-kun." Takeshi said. "I understand."

"Now for the Knights." Azazel said. "First is Kiba Yuuto."

"Yes."

"Like we discussed a while back, I want you to further extend your Balance Breaker's time limit to a full day at the very least." Azazel said. "About your sword training, will you receive instruction from Sirzechs' Knight?"

"Yes." Yuuto nodded. "Master will be training me from scratch once again to further hone my technique."

"Good." Azazel said. "However, there are two more things I require from you during this training. First, you need to unlock the full potential of your Holy Demonic Sword."

"Its…full potential?" Yuuto frowned. "What are you talking about, Sensei?"

"Both me and Raziel from the Heaven side studied the Holy Demonic Sword you gave each of us shortly after the conference and came to the same conclusion." Azazel said. "Because of its unique make-up, your Holy Demonic Sword has the ability to siphon holy aura from an opponent by using its demonic attribute to enhance its own holy attribute and vice versa. Suffice to say, such an ability gives you a significant edge over swordsmen with Holy and Demonic blades, and even members of the Three Factions in general. Furthermore, by tampering with the balance of holy and demonic power contained in the blade, you could force it into a rampage state that temporarily enhances its attack power."

"There's such power hidden in my Holy Demonic Sword…?" Yuuto wondered. "To think I was unable to figure out my own weapon's properties, that makes me a failure as a Knight."

"Hey, don't beat yourself up over that." Azazel said. "Pointing these things to you kids is part of my job after all. Besides, such a Balance Breaker has never appeared before in the history of the Sacred Gear System, so it's only natural that you would miss some things without a prior point of reference."

"I suppose you're right, Sensei." Yuuto said with a smile. "What about the other thing you want me to work on?"

"I need you to awaken the second Sacred Gear dwelling inside your soul."

Everyone let out surprised gasps following this unexpected announcement from Azazel.

"Another Sacred Gear?" Rias frowned. "What are you talking about, Azazel? All wielders so far have been born with a single Sacred Gear, unless we're talking about unique cases like Takeshi's. How can Yuuto possess two Sacred Gears?"

"It's not something he was born with, but rather something he inherited." Azazel began explaining. "The Holy Element he absorbed to trigger his Balance Breaker contained something else apart from holy factors, namely the Sacred Gear Blade Blacksmith."

"The holy counterpart to Yuuto's Sword Birth?" Takeshi asked. "How on Earth did that happen?"

"I looked over the ritual and equipment that deranged lunatic Valper used to extract the holy factors from the victims of the Holy Sword Project after Michael forwarded the data to me." Azazel said. "Some parts of the extraction ritual are rather similar to the ones we use for the Sacred Gear extraction ceremony in Grigori. My guess is that the wielder of Blade Blacksmith wasn't quite dead when Valper started working on them, and due to an anomaly, he ended up removing their Sacred Gear along with the holy factor, sealing it inside the Holy Element. We're lucky that bastard never got to realize what he had accomplished before you guys offed him."

"If this Blade Blacksmith belonged to a friend of mine…then it must be Emma's Sacred Gear." Yuuto said with a trembling voice, tears forming in the corners of his eyes as he placed his hand on his chest. "Your legacy lives on inside me in more ways than one, everyone…"

"All things considered, you got extremely lucky in this case." Azazel said. "Not only did you receive an extra Sacred Gear due to unforeseen circumstances, but it didn't have any adverse effects on your soul due to Blade Blacksmith and Sword Birth having the same level of power. Of course, the imbalance between holy and demonic power played its part there as well. You wouldn't have been to contain two Gears with opposing attributes otherwise."

"I would call it a blessing from Heaven if I didn't know Deus Trinity is long gone." Yuuto said, wiping the tears from his eyes. "Then, Sensei, you want me to attain Balance Breaker for Blade Blacksmith as well?"

"That's something better left for the future since you have plenty of things to work on already." Azazel said. "Just awakening it and attaining a certain level of mastery over it is enough for now. While your Sword of Betrayer already offers you blades that can generate holy power, Blade Blacksmith should be useful in cases when you face enemies vulnerable to the holy element and don't wish to expend too much power by activating your Balance Breaker."

Yuuto nodded, with Azazel moving on.

"Next is the second Knight Pandora."

"Yes!"

"Regarding your curse, I have the Grigori scientists working on a potential solution, though they've been stumped so far due to how entangled it is with your soul." Azazel said. "Geez, Greek Gods and monsters are quite nasty when it comes to their grudges."

"Tell me about it…" Pandora said with a dispirited expression. "So, there's no hope then?"

"It's too soon to despair." Azazel said. "For now, I've made a few additional improvements in the sealing formula that should extend your time limit a bit further. As for your Spirit Magic, it's about time you took things to the next level. First, in order to solve the need for specific conditions to be met in order to utilize Spirits of a certain element, you'll use these from now on."

Azazel conjured a small magic circle, taking out six crystals that shone with a warm light.

"These are…?"

"Anima Crystals." Azazel responded to Pandora's question. "Mined in their raw state in Alfheim and refined through the magics of Vanaheim. The Elves of Alfheim use them as support for their Spirit Magic. Each Anima Crystal is attuned to a specific element and can house a large number of Spirits belonging to said element. It's a far more effective method compared to housing Spirits in your body like you've done so far. Through negotiations, I was able to acquire a crystal for each basic element. As for the price…well, let's just say it was substantial and leave it at that. I'm so getting an earful from Shemhazai and Penemue later…"

"I'm sorry, you said a crystal for each element, right?" Pandora asked. "Then why are there six crystals there, Sensei?"

"That's because there exist Spirits of the light and dark attribute, though they're far more difficult to sense and control than Spirits of the four basic elements." Azazel said. "What I want from you at this stage though is something else. Like I said before, you need to refine your Spirit Magic by moving to the next stage. That means you have to learn how to better focus your power in order to form Spirit Armaments."

"Spirit…Armaments?"

Pandora tilted her head to the side, a curious expression on her face.

"That's right." Azazel nodded. "By gathering a large amount of Spirits and shaping them into weapons, you can unleash far greater power in a more concentrated manner compared to simple Spirit Invocation. Along with the Anima Crystals, I've brought several texts from Alfheim that detail the training methods Elves use to form their Spirit Armaments. Once you complete this, you can move on to the more advanced application of constructing a Spirit Raiment, which is basically forming a large number of Spirits around your body as armor. Again, that's for later down the line though. Focus on Spirit Armament for now."

"Yes!" Pandora nodded in an enthusiastic manner as she received the crystals from Azazel. "I will do my best so as not to drag down everyone!"

"Next, we move on to the Rooks." Azazel said. "We start with you, Toujou Koneko."

"…Yes."

"As a Rook, both your physical strength and defense are top-notch, so I've got nothing to criticize there." Azazel said. "You will resume your basic training on that area, working on your agility as well in order to better avoid blows. Tanking hits is good, but it's always better to evade an attack if you can."

Koneko nodded as Azazel continued speaking.

"As for Senjutsu and Youjutsu, you've made some good progress despite being a late starter." Azazel said. "It's unfortunate that we couldn't get help from another Youkai like you did last time. The East Youkai Faction is still busy rebuilding, meaning all their warriors are busy, and we don't exactly have a really close relationship with the West Youkai Faction even though we're allies now. However, Magari did allow me to borrow several scrolls from their archives. You'll study them to further refine your abilties, with the main goal being to grow your second tail by the time you're done. Once you've done so, you can call yourself a proper Nekoshu."

"…Right."

"The same Rook, Xenovia." Azazel said. "Your destructive power and physical prowess are remarkable. The trait of a Rook seems to fit you to a T despite being a sword wielder, and the technique you've learned from Amakusa Kaori has further refined it. However, it appears you're far from mastering Durandal."

"As much as it shames me to admit it, it's true." Xenovia said. "Taming its power is like trying to ride a wild horse. Despite being its wielder for so many years, I haven't come close to controlling it."

"That's not very surprising, considering Durandal has quite the temperament among Holy Swords." Azazel said. "Often, the personalities of the most notable wielders tend to leave a spiritual mark on the blade, and with people like Roland and Vasco Strada using it…well, it's not surprising Durandal leans towards unrestrained destructive power. However, this could present a problem. If you can't regulate Durandal's power, it's possible your allies could get caught up in your attacks. Moreover, if you end up facing an enemy specializing in counters, all that destructive power could be reflected back at you, resulting in an instant out."

"The first thing did happen a few times during my tenure as a Church warrior…"

Xenovia said with a somewhat embarrassed expression.

"Fortunately for you, I've come up with a simple way to address both problems to a degree." Azazel smirked. "All you need to do is learn how to handle another Holy Sword, a real special one."

Azazel conjured another magic circle and put his hand in it, drawing out a blade from it and burying its tip in the ground. Said blade was a large black broadsword with a golden edge, which had a large golden cross attached to the flat of the blade and a smaller one on the guard. Upon seeing it, Xenovia let out a surprised gasp alongside Rias.

"This blade…could it be?" Xenovia said, extending her hand towards it in a tentative manner. "The Holy Sword Almace?"

"Almace…" Rias muttered. "This blade was supposedly lost decades ago. Is this the real deal, or some sort of replica?"

"No, this is truly Almace, the blade of Archbishop Turpin, a skilled warrior priest who fought alongside Roland, the most renowned wielder of Durandal." Azazel said. "It's a Holy Sword which prominently features in French legends alongside Roland's Durandal, Olivier's Hauteclere, Charlemagne's Joyeuse and the traitor Ganelon's Demonic Sword Murgleis. It has a good synergy with Durandal, so I believe it's the ideal weapon for you. Why don't you give it a spin, see how it feels?"

Xenovia grabbed Almace, feeling a pleasant hum coming from the blade. Giving it a few swings, she let out a satisfied expression.

"It feels…right." Xenovia said with a smile. "Like it was made to fit my hand. Where did you find this blade, Sensei?"

"Some agents of mine dug it out of the battlefield it had fallen and brought it to Grigori for study." Azazel said. "I intended to return it to Heaven as a gesture of goodwill once we made peace at first, but I spoke to Michael about my plans for you and he agreed to let you have it. I'm not sure if I should be grateful, or scold him for being too open-handed."

"Blessed be the name of Michael-sama." Xenovia said, her gratitude evident. "His continued benevolence towards this fallen Church warrior astounds me."

"As you are probably aware, the blade can emit an aura capable of negating all sorts of supernatural phenomena." Azazel said. "This makes it an ideal countermeasure against techniques meant to trap you or reflect your power back at you. However, its nullification capabilities aren't almighty, so don't overly depend on them. Regarding the matter of Durandal's control, you can keep it sealed in its pocket dimension and draw only its aura out, wrapping it around Almace. That way, you can utilize its power without being plagued by the issues of control. Still, it would be for the best if you learned to tame Durandal without aid down the line. You could draw out even more destructive power by having the two blades work in synergy with one another."

"Understood."

"Last, but not least, we have you, Takeshi." Azazel said, turning to the final member of the Gremory group. "When it comes to you, there are three specific goals you should aim for during this training apart from gaining more combat experience. The first, and probably most difficult, is to subdue Ladon and gain access to his Balance Breaker."

"Easier said than done." Takeshi said. "Any ideas regarding that matter?"

"Your trainer might have a couple, but I can't guarantee you'll like them." Azazel said. "For the second, I have a question for you first. Can you switch from one Balance Breaker to the other mid-fight?"

"No, that's beyond me for now." Takeshi said. "I have to dismiss my current Balance Breaker, summon another auxiliary Sacred Gear, and then activate its Balance Breaker."

"I thought as much." Azazel said. "However, that won't do at all. There might be times where you'll need to switch to a more suitable Balance Breaker in the middle of a fight due to the situation changing. Requiring a three-step process that leaves you vulnerable for a short amount of time to do so is unacceptable. Any fighter worth their salt will aim at that opening with all their power."

"That's true." Takeshi said. "My second goal is to learn how to rapidly cycle through Balance Breakers then. Won't such an action place a burden on my body though?"

"It probably will, but having that option available might prove invaluable down the line." Azazel said. "As for your third goal, you need to improve your control over the draconic aura granted to you by Cataclysm Zone. You've gotten through so far by throwing your power around with a rudimentary amount of control, but that won't be enough in the long run. If you get a better handle of your draconic aura, you might be able to mitigate the adverse effects your Balance Breakers have on your body to some degree. The modifications I'm performing on you are showing some results, but we can't rely on that alone."

Azazel checked his notes once before speaking again.

"Your demonic power is an issue, since it might make handling your draconic aura more difficult by mixing with it involuntarily." Azazel said. "Fortunately, your trainer is well-versed in such conditions, so you're in good hands there."

"OK, who's this trainer you keep yammering on about, Sensei?"

"Ah, perfect timing." Azazel said with a grin, turning his gaze to the sky. "Here he comes."

Following his gaze, Takeshi saw that a large black shape was descending towards them at high speed. Before they could discern what it was, it landed on the garden, causing the earth to shake and raising a huge dust cloud.

"What, cough, what in the nine circles of Hell is that thing!?"

Rias exclaimed while coughing. Once the dust settled, the creature's features were revealed. It was fifteen meters tall, with purple scales covering its body and thick limbs, and had a pair of wings extending from its back. Two curved horns protruded from its head, and a large tail was flicking behind it.

"…A Dragon?"

Takeshi muttered with a surprised expression on his face.

"That's right, a Dragon." Azazel said, patting the creature's leg. "And not just any Dragon, mind you. This is Tannin, a former Dragon King who reincarnated into a Devil long ago. His rank is Ultimate-class, so you had best treat him with respect, kids."

"Don't get so familiar, Azazel." Tannin said, swiping his tail at the Fallen Angel, who deftly evaded it. "Also, you've got some nerve entering Devil territory like that. We may have declared peace, but there's a lot of rowdy fellows who'd give anything for a chance at your head, Fallen Angel Governor."

"Let them come if they wish." Azazel showed a fearless smile. "If they do, I'll give them an experience they won't soon forget. In any case, Tannin here will be your teacher for the next days, Takeshi. You should be grateful, you know? Not many get the chance to be taught by the renowned Blaze Meteor Dragon."

"So, this is the kid who carries the Evil Dragons, eh?" Tannin said as he appraised Takeshi. "You seem strong enough. Perhaps you will survive my training. If you want to turn back though, this is your last chance. There's no running away once we've started."

"I came here prepared, Tannin-sama." Takeshi said, clenching his fists. "No matter what, I have to become stronger. To do that, I'll go through any training, no matter how grueling it is."

"Nice attitude you've got there, Ryuugamine Takeshi." Tannin grinned. "Lots of spunk, just like a young Dragon. For your sake though, I hope your resolve matches your capabilities. It would be disappointing otherwise."

[And you're…the expert…on disappointment…aren't you…Tannin…?]

Cataclysm Zone appeared around Takeshi's waist, with Ladon's voice coming from it. Upon hearing it, Tannin's expression darkened.

"Ladon." Tannin growled. "I was hoping I wouldn't have to hear that apathetic slur again for the rest of my life."

[I'm sure…you were…] Ladon chuckled. [After all…you made…quite a fool of yourself…when you confronted me…in the past… So much…for the almighty…Blaze Meteor Dragon…whose breath…has the force of a meteorite… To me…there was no difference…between your breath…and a matchstick…]

"Big words coming from someone speaking from a safe haven." Tannin snorted. "If you were still living, the current me would have scorched you to the point where even your soul would have been annihilated."

[Now…who's the weakling…spouting big words…?] Ladon taunted. [Right…that's you…the pitiful Dragon that…]

"Shut your trap, Ladon." Takeshi said, dismissing Cataclysm Zone by force and silencing the Evil Dragon. "Sorry about that, Tannin-sama. I guess you and Ladon have some history together?"

"Indeed." Tannin said, letting out small embers from his mouth. "I had fought him a few times in my youth, and each time, I was unable to defeat him as much as I hate admitting it. More than though, I despise his attitude and the destruction he wrought."

"Why him specifically?"

"That's because that bastard was responsible for the highest number of civilian casualties among the Evil Dragons." Tannin said with evident distaste. "Ladon would wander around aimlessly whenever he felt like moving, and if he came across a town or a city while doing so…let's just say he found it too much trouble to go around it."

"At this point, nothing can surprise me about these lowlifes." Takeshi said with a grimace. "It's a shame nobody could find a way to exterminate them for good."

"True, but lamenting about the impossible is a waste of time." Tannin said, and then smiled. "I have to say though, Sirzechs' request was rather surprising. I never thought the day would come where I would be called upon to train the infamous Evil Dragon User. It appears that, no matter how long you've lived, you can still be surprised by unexpected events."

"No arguments there."

"It seems we're all set then." Rias said, clapping her hands together. "Everyone, let's all do our best and grow even stronger! That way, we'll triumph over the Sitri group and each of our future opponents for sure!"

[Yes!]

All members of the Gremory Peerage responded in an enthusiastic manner.

"Come with me, Ryuugamine Takeshi." Tannin said as he spread his wings. "We'll head to the closest long-range teleportation magic circle that will bring us to my territory. Once we are there, we shall begin immediately."

"Yes, Master."

Takeshi said as he spread his own wings and followed after the Dragon, both eager and anxious to start his training.

This concludes Chapter 39. First, in response to your questions.

To RyukiPendragon: When using the base Gear, Takeshi will only have partial access to Aži Dahāka's vast arcane knowledge. Only when using the Balance Breaker will have almost unrestricted access to his knowledge.

The Rating Game between Rias and Sona has been decided, and the Gremory group's members head to their respective training with their own goals. Now, as to whether they'll succeed in becoming much stronger, or simply surviving in Takeshi's case, that's something that remains to be seen.

Well, that's all for now. As always, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
