Chapter 57
Boss Battles: Mario

"Wha?" Bowsette shrieked out in alarm. As soon as she sat down Bowsette fell through a vortex of inky blackness. As she fell through a void, occasional swirls of purple and red were the only signs of light in this place. "OW!" Bowsette landed on her butt on a small platform made of black/purple slightly swirling matter. "Where the hell am I?" Bowsette got up and rubbed her sore bottom as she looked around.

The familiar sound of a flying broomstick drew Bowsette's attention. "You." Bowsette exclaimed as she saw a Remnant Magikoopa flying towards her and stopping. "The Remnant Kamek I'm guessing? This is definitely Kamek's kind of handiwork." There was no response from the thing, but Bowsette didn't expect one. "So, what, you brought me here? You want to fight? I don't think the odds are good for you." Bowsette laughed arrogantly. "You going to run away again?"

The only response of the Magikoopa was to raise up his wand. A blast of magical energy flowed from the wand onto the Magikoopa himself. The Remnant Kamek grew larger, and larger, and larger until Bowsette was the size of a small doll in comparison. The platform it was standing on was too small to hold the creature, so it grabbed and hung from the dark platform Bowsette was standing on.

"Oh… Koopa Shells…" Bowsette turned and ran, leaping from one dark platform to another. The massive Magikoopa destroyed the dark platforms crawling from one to the next as it pursued her.

"BOWSETTE!" Mario shouted with concern. She had just suddenly vanished as soon as she sat in that chair. Mario rushed forward only for the sound of the double doors behind the throne slamming open to bring him to a halt.

A familiar figure stepped inside, green hat, green shirt, and blue overalls, but what was different was the pink glowing eyes and angry expression. The doors automatically closed behind an infected Luigi, his scowl turning into a maniacal grin. "Here and-a before, she's always been an impulsive idiot, hasn't she?" The infected Luigi noted candidly. "So-a predictable!"

"Bro?" Mario stepped back. "What did you-a do with Bowsette?" Mario was confused. The infected Luigi wasn't right exactly, but he seemed more stable than infected Peach the last time Mario saw her.

Luigi chuckled. "We just got-a her out of the way for a while. So we-a could have a nice talk, brother to brother." Luigi pointed a finger at Mario. "It's time for you to see the-a truth Bro." Sparks started to form. Mario stood resolutely as the pink lightning shot out and hit him… to no effect.

Mario smirked. "Truth truth truth. You guys need to-a come up with a new routine." Mario noted. "Besides, I already know-a the truth." Mario stepped forward and drew his hammer. He needed to get Luigi to hit him with that lightning at least a couple more times.

Luigi stops in his tracks, confused by what just happened. His expression changed from maniacal to sad for a moment. "Mario I… I… can't…" Luigi grabs his head in pain and groans. "You… you'll have to kill me Bro." Pink glowing tears flowed from Luigi's face. "Please Mario, I can't… I can't stop…"

The tears stopped, and Luigi wiped them from his face. Luigi's expression turned to one of pure fury as the infection took over again. "You know-a the truth? You're lying! If you did you-a wouldn't be with her! She's the-a enemy!" Luigi growls. "This is NOT how the-a world IS SUPPOSED TO BE!" Luigi leaps into the air and descends upon Mario.

"Shit shit shit shiiiiit!" Bowsette leapt from one black platform to another with the Remnant Kamek in hot pursuit. It was too large to step on the platforms so the Remnant grabbed onto one after another to pull itself along, destroying the one in one hand as it grasped the next. Bowsette was just barely ahead of it as it destroyed the platforms. Its expression was the same pure rage as the others, but it looked like it was enjoying toying with its prey.

Bowsette gathered fire in her body and turned only for a moment to shoot a large fireball at the thing, which impacted against the Remnant's nose. The Remnant, however, showed barely any sign of having noticed the hit. "FUCK!" Bowsette turned and continued to run.

'These damned platforms are too small! I can't stand and fight on them!' Bowsette continued leaping from one platform to the next. Sooner or later the Remnant was going to get tired of playing around and speed up to catch Bowsette, and then it would be all over. 'If this is anything like Kamek's spell to make me bigger it should wear off in half an hour, but I'll be dead by then.' Bowsette lamented.

"There!" Bowsette spotted a larger platform off in the distance and moved to leap to the platforms to the right toward it. Finally, she found herself on a large enough platform with some room to fight. Bowsette got ready as the Remnant grabbed the black platform just before the one Bowsette was on with its right hand, then reached with its left hand to grasp the other.

"Oh no you don't!" Bowsette rushed forward just as the Remnant Kamek destroyed the platform in its right hand and Bowsette leapt into the air over the Remnant's left hand that was grasping the platform she was on. Twirling in the air, Bowsette pounded down on the hand as hard as she could.

The Remnant screeched and involuntarily let go of Bowsette's platform. With its hands empty the Remnant Kamek plummeted into the dark abyss below… only to teleport onto the middle of Bowsette's platform just as Bowsette lost sight of it in the depths.

Bowsette groaned in irritation. "Yeah… it was too much to hope it would be that easy." Bowsette grumbled. Bowsette pointed resolutely at the being. "As Pasta Freak would say, let's-a go!" Bowsette said before she charged at it.

*Cue Decisive Battle Stage - Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Music*

Mario quickly jumps back to dodge before Luigi ground pounds the spot where Mario is standing. Luigi, however, doesn't give Mario a moment to collect himself before launching a stream of fireballs immediately at Mario. Mario uses his hammer to bat them aside, but that was only a distraction.

Luigi rushes at Mario as he's busy dealing with the fireballs and Luigi strikes Mario with his hammer. Mario just barely manages to block the blow with his own hammer, the strike being so powerful it nearly tears Mario's hammer from his hand. Instead of getting into a hammer-on-hammer fight however, Mario instead risks losing his by holding his hammer in one hand and punching Luigi in the face.

Now it was Mario's turn to be relentless. Mario follows up the punch by opening his hand and firing his own stream of fireballs point blank at the infected plumber. "Luigi… I'm sorry about this!" Mario steps back, only to see that aside from some scorch marks on his face and clothes Luigi is barely affected.

Luigi belts out an uncharacteristically maniacal laugh. "See Bro? Knowing the-a truth has made me strong." Luigi rushes forward far faster than normal, and once again Mario has to fend off a hammer blow, and then another… and another… "FAR stronger than-a even you!"

As Mario does his best to hold off Luigi he tries to come up with something, anything. 'I need to get-a him to hit me with that lightning again. But how? Luigi isn't stupid enough to keep-a using it on me when it doesn't work like a certain Koopa Queen and her-a minions are.' Mario realized. 'Wait, I've-a got it!' Mario leapt back as far as he could and threw a stream of fireballs directly at the ground as he was still going through the air. The fireballs extinguished on impact with the ground and left a plume of smoke in their wake.

"This-a won't help you!" Luigi yelled and rushed into the smoke blindly, as Mario had hoped. Mario used the cover of the smoke to move around the room and shot more fireballs at the ground, filling the whole room with smoke that made it hard for either combatant to see. "I'll find-a you Mario! I was always best at-a hide and seek!" Luigi growled in frustration.

With the smoke having nowhere to go, the thick smoke didn't disperse and wouldn't for a few minutes. "Are you sure about-a that? Come on Luigi! I'm ready to see-a the truth now! That is if you can hit me!" Deliberately Mario got close enough that Luigi could catch a glimpse of him through the smoke, backed away, and… there!

"See the-a truth then Bro!" Luigi fired off a bolt of pink lightning in Mario's general direction. Mario leaps back to intercept the bolt with his body while still keeping himself concealed in the smoke. Mario laughs mockingly. "Yoooou missssed-a me!"

Luigi's roar of rage in response to Mario's taunts made Mario smirk. 'There we go… now if…' Luigi aimlessly fired off bolts in the direction of Mario's voice. To be doubly sure Mario let himself be hit a couple more times as he maneuvered around behind the insane infected. Mario leapt forward, Luigi just barely managed to turn around before Mario hit him directly in the face with both feet, knocking Luigi to the ground. "You were-a always a sucker Luigi."

Mario grabbed the badge in his hand and pointed it at Luigi. The pink energy shot out as a bolt of its own from the badge and struck Luigi dead on. "Got-a you Bro."

Author's Note: When I put in *Cue Music Title Here* it is for immersion's sake but feel free to ignore it. It's music from a Mario game that I feel fits the situation. I'd put a direct link but doesn't allow it and besides it would probably eventually be removed. Jump on Youtube to search for it if you like. I didn't really have much inspiration to do this up to this point.
