Chapter 49

"Now, you're sure about this?" Mike asked as Nancy parked the car.

Nancy sighed. "It's just a hunch Mike, but...well, what else do we have?"

Mike nodded. "I get it, I just...I hope this pans out, or we're going to have a lot of problems…"

"There wouldn't have been anything in Oscorp, not with the feds all over things." Nancy explained. "So if there's anything we can fine that should help out, maybe overcome Osborn then, it'll be here."

Mike sighed. "Right, we just gotta get through the security, you think they'll announce the new mayor yet?"

Nancy shook her head. "I don't think so, not at least until this whole issue with the Green Goblin is resolved. He'd probably just attack them."

"Yeah, probably." Mike admitted.

With that they got out of the car and began to cross the street and head around the corner to reach not City Hall, as some would think, but the building that held Osborn's penthouse where he had stayed during his time as mayor. It was empty but regardless, it would still be guarded by private security.

"Okay, we've gotta do this, together, right?" Nancy said.

Mike nodded in agreement. "Yup, let's go."

So together, the Wheeler siblings made their way into the penthouse building.

Once inside they looked around, there were a couple of people around, two guards by one of the elevators, likely the one that would lead up directly to Osborn's penthouse.

"Gotta distract them...but it needs to be for a while and that everyone else will be distracted." Mike mused. "Once we're up there, I do have something that could help us, Will gave me these."

With that he handed some devices to Nancy and explained that they would emit a noise when thrown and could be used as lures.

"Not gonna help us here." Nancy understood. "But yeah, let's see…"

"I've got an idea, but we need to be quick." Mike said.

Nancy nodded, ready to take anything right now. So she waited in position while Mike slipped into one of the side corridors, which led to a security room, she knew that much. Most likely by pure chance, she nevertheless smiled in relief seeing it, something came on the TV mounted on the wall in the lobby, drawing the attention of everyone there except for the guards who stood by the elevator still. Then suddenly she saw the guards were listening to something on their radios and hurry off. She began to worry as they went down the same corridor Mike had done but then, a short while later, to her relief, Mike slipped out and, nodding to her, hurried to the elevator, Nancy hurried to do the same and they called it and entered, heading up.

"What did you do?"

"I kinda...messed with their communications." Mike admitted. "They've gone looking for a non-existent problem. I just hid and let them pass me."

Nancy smirked, glad that their plan was going off good so far, now they just needed to find something important that could help them with what they needed.

To their relief, when the elevator opened, there was nobody outside, no security. They slipped out and ducked down behind the large sofa right in front of them, looking around, they saw them at least three security guards and, based on the footsteps they could hear, there was at least three others in the penthouse.

Nancy pointed to the visible door, through both their current position and another room.

"That must be Norman's office, if there's anything here, it'll be there." She whispered.

Mike nodded and, looking over at the security guards, he noted that those guards weren't moving.

"Hope this works." He muttered.

He took one of the lures and threw it across to the other side, the doorway of what appeared to be a bedroom. To his relief it did for the moment the lure landed and made its sound, the trio of guards started and then hurried towards it. Nodding the Nancy they slipped around and, even better, the guards entered the bedroom, allowing the siblings to slip into the next room and ducking behind a counter, Nancy peeked out.

"Yeah, three of them, two patrolling, one right by the bedroom door." She whispered.

"Alright, we need to lure those two patrolling...maybe up to the top of this room, then we can work on the guy near the office." Mike whispered back.

Nancy nodded and this time she used the lure, it worked again, both guards made their way over and the siblings slipped closer, using the furniture for cover. Taking a gamble, Mike used the lure this time and instead rolled it across the floor, out the open balcony door where it came to rest and made its sound, the guard thankfully did indeed go to check. Using this chance they slipped into the office and stopped for a moment to catch their breath.

"Soundproof, perfect, that'll work to our advantage." Nancy noted.

Mike nodded and they began to search before finding only one thing which stood out. A moderately sized package was on Norman's desk, they checked it and, unable to stop themselves, they opened it.

"The date on it, it was deliver the day after Harry Osborn died." Mike remarked.

They noted that it held only one thing, a tablet which they examined and then noticed it seemed to contain a simple video, sharing a look they pressed the screen and watched as it played.

Hopper sighed heavily as he reached the rooftop of the police station and leaned on the railing. He took out a cigarette and put it in his mouth.

"Those things will kill you."

He rolled his eyes and took it out. "I figure some criminal will shoot me dead before the smokes do."

He turned to face Spider-Man who was perched on the balcony, he just new that under that mask the kid was grinning at him.

"Ya never know." Spidey replied. "So, are things getting better here?"

Hopper managed a smile at that. "Yeah actually, ever since the Wheeler girl exposed Brenner we've been able to get back on the streets and do our jobs again at last."

"That's great."

"Is it, we've got those supervillains on the loose." Hopper remarked. "I don't think we can handle them, I mean, you struggled, didn't you?"

Spider-Man nodded. "Well, yeah but I got help this time. Had to take out Brenner and shut down that Oscorp takeover stuff but, I was able to get some friends to come and help me take care of those guys."

Hopper smiled knowingly. "Mutants, right? Good work kid."

Spider-Man nodded, things were almost all set, he just had to hope it was enough.

"I can't believe we actually made it out." Nancy gasped. "You still got it?"

Mike nodded. "Yeah, got it, I can't believe this, how did Norman not…?"

Nancy shook her head. "He must've broke and ended up as the Green Goblin before he got it...he must've never seen it."

Mike agreed, that would be the most likely scenario. They had managed to escape the penthouse, without alerting the guards luckily, now they were back in Nancy's car and, after seeing what was on it, they took the tablet with them. Nancy started up the car and drove off, heading for the Byers house, since Mike knew right away this would be useful and could help Will and so he insisted on them bringing to Will straight away, Nancy agreed and so finally they were on their way, ready to show Will what they had just found, the thing that could potentially change Will's changes against Norman for the better.
