Chapter 3: ~Choice~

Chizuru sat with Miss Hana at the back of the house, the sound of the ocean providing a backdrop to their conversation. The weight of Hannah's words hung heavy in the air, lingering in Chizuru's mind.

Her fists clenched as her gaze dropped to the ground, lost in the sea of grass. "Your husband is dying," Hana had said, and Chizuru couldn't shake the gravity of those words.

" A month ago, an epidemic had swept through the nearby village, claiming lives and leaving the community in despair. It was only recently that they discovered the cause - a mysterious plant with a toxic release, infecting both humans and animals. Thankfully, a cure had been found, but it seems there were still animals out there carrying the disease." Hana's voice broke the silence, her grip tightening on Chizuru's hand. She spoke of a plant that held the counter to the poison, but it was located deep in the treacherous forest, notorious for bandits and an eerie fog that played tricks on the mind. Lives had been lost in the quest for the cure, and Hana posed a question to Chizuru that lingered in the air - was she willing to risk her life in a mission that could end in failure?

Chizuru's heart pounded in her chest as uncertainty swept through her.

Chizuru was silent for a moment, unsure of what to say in response to Hana's proposition. The weight of her husband's illness hung heavy in her heart, and the thought of risking her own life filled her with trepidation. But as she stared at the grass beneath her feet, her mind began to race with thoughts and emotions. How far was she willing to go for love? It was a question that demanded an answer, and it was one that Chizuru knew she had to confront at this very moment. There was no time for delays, no room for doubt. With a heavy sigh, she made her decision.

Turning away from the ocean, Chizuru stood up and walked back towards the house, with Miss Hana following closely behind. The creaking of the wooden floorboards seemed to echo the weight of her resolve as she reached the door to her bedroom. With a trembling hand, she slid it open and stepped inside. Her eyes fell upon Sano, who was sitting on the bed, his gaze fixed on her with his pure black eyes.

Memories flooded her mind, flashes of their time together on the road, the conversations they shared, the laughter they had enjoyed. She couldn't bear the thought of losing him, of giving up on him.

Taking a deep breath, Chizuru spoke, her voice filled with determination and a touch of uncertainty, "Wait for me, Sano. I'm not giving up on you."

Her words hung in the air, a vow made to a man who may not even understand her, but it didn't matter.

She had made her choice, and she was ready to face whatever dangers lay ahead. With that, Chizuru turned to Hana, her eyes shining with a newfound resolve. "I will go," she declared, her voice steady despite the fear that still lingered within her. "I will find that yellow flower and bring back the cure. I won't let Sano suffer any longer."

Hannah's expression softened, a mix of admiration and concern. She placed a comforting hand on Chizuru's shoulder. "You're a brave woman, Chizuru," she said softly. "But please, promise me that you'll be careful. The forest is full of dangers, and the bandits there won't hesitate to harm you. Don't let your love blind you to the risks. I'm sure master Harada wouldn't want that for you."

Chizuru nodded, her gaze steady. "I understand, Miss Hana. I won't let my emotions cloud my judgement. I will be cautious and do everything in my power to ensure my safety."

Hana squeezed her shoulder gently, a silent reassurance passing between them. "I believe in you, Chizuru. I know you can do this. Just remember, if things get too dangerous, don't hesitate to turn back. Your life is precious too."

With a grateful smile, Chizuru nodded once more. She would carry those words with her as she embarked on this journey. She would face the fog and the bandits, the hallucinations and the uncertainties, all for the chance to save her husband's life. Chizuru gathered a bit of supplies, water, some fruits to eat and her kodachi. Miss Hana drew a simple map for her to follow, in order to find the flower.

As she stepped out of the house, the wind whispered through the trees, carrying with it a sense of anticipation. Chizuru took a deep breath, inhaling the salty scent of the ocean mingled with the earthy aroma of the forest. She could feel the weight of her decision pressing against her, but she knew that she had made the right choice. With each determined step, Chizuru moved closer to the unknown, her heart filled with equal parts hope and fear. She was ready to risk everything for love, to face the dangers that awaited her in the depths of the forest. For Sano, for their future together, she would not falter. And so, with the yellow flower in her mind and love as her guiding light, Chizuru set forth on her mission, her footsteps marking the beginning of a journey that would test her in ways she could never have imagined.

It was nightfall, the sky painted in deep hues of violet and navy, as Chizuru arrived at the outskirts of the forest.

Beyond the village where Harada often ventured to sell his hunts, the forest stood, shrouded in an air of mystery and darkness. Its dense foliage seemed impenetrable, even the feeblest rays of light struggled to breach its ancient barriers.

Yet, Chizuru, being a demon, was undeterred by the dimness that cloaked the forest. She knew that the absence of light would not cause issues for her.

Summoning her courage, Chizuru inhaled a steadying breath, her heartbeat echoing in her ears. She pushed through the thick grass, its blades whispering against her legs like secrets exchanged in the night.

As she crossed the threshold, an ethereal shift swept through the air, enveloping her in an otherworldly embrace.

The atmosphere grew thick, as if invisible tendrils coiled around her, constricting her chest and stealing her breath away.

A sudden drop in temperature sent shivers coursing through her body, causing her limbs to tremble involuntarily. It was a bone-chilling cold that seeped into her very core, threatening to freeze her in place. "What is happening here?" Chizuru's voice escaped her lips in a hushed whisper, barely audible above the rustle of leaves.

The dirt path stretched out before her, lined with towering trees that reached towards the heavens. Their ancient trunks, weathered by time, seemed to possess a haunting wisdom. Twisted branches intertwined like gnarled fingers, creating an intricate web that blocked out most of the sky. Yet, amidst the somber canopy, the moon's gentle light managed to seep through, casting an ethereal glow upon the forest floor.

With her heart pounding in her chest like a wild beast, Chizuru took hesitant steps forward, her senses heightened, attuned to every sound and movement around her.

She moved with a delicate grace, careful not to disturb the silence that clung to the forest like a heavy cloak.

Each footfall was deliberate, her eyes fixated on the ground, ensuring she avoided the treacherous traps of fallen leaves. She knew that any inadvertent noise could alert the bandits rumoured to reside within these foreboding woods.

As she ventured deeper into the heart of the forest, a symphony of mysterious sounds danced through the air, taunting her senses. The whisper of the wind, the distant hoot of an owl, and the rustle of unseen creatures blended together, creating an eerie melody that sent shivers cascading down her spine.

Chizuru's eyes darted around, desperately searching for the source of these sounds. Yet, her vision revealed nothing but darkness that enveloped the forest like a sinister shroud.

Just as her senses reached their apex, a sudden movement caught her attention. The grass to her left swayed, betraying the presence of something.

Her heart skipped a beat, her breath hitching in her throat. She strained her eyes, peering into the inky blackness, trying to spot the form that lurked within.

Then, the sound of footsteps echoed through the stillness, drawing closer with each passing second. Her pulse quickened, her grip on reality slipping as a wave of uncertainty washed over her.

Yet, despite her heightened senses and unwavering focus, Chizuru's eyes were rendered useless in this void of darkness. The bandits, if they were indeed before her, remained veiled, their presence concealed by the obscurity of the forest. She was left to confront the unknown, her heart pounding in her chest, a mixture of fear and curiosity bubbling within her. Chizuru stood poised, ready to face whatever awaited her in this place, her determination unwavering as she moved to the side, to hide between the grass and she braved forward. Hoping this person did not locate her.

She covered her mouth with her hand, desperately trying to stifle her terrified breaths.

Every slow, deliberate movement caused her heart to race, the sound of her own footsteps pounding in her ears. The darkness swallowed her whole, providing a thin veil of protection against the figures lurking nearby.

Suddenly, a man emerged, his sickly pallor contrasting against the blackened surroundings. Clad in a dark kimono, he appeared almost ethereal, a floating head in the void.

He paused, taking in the stale air with a long, sinister sniff, before unleashing a chilling moan. "We have a woman among us, boys," he announced, his voice dripping with malice. A shiver ran down Chizuru's spine as his words confirmed her fears.

These bandits would not hesitate to rape her, subjecting her to horrors beyond imagination.

Summoning every ounce of courage, Chizuru willed herself to press on.

She could not afford to falter now. As the man's attention seemed diverted, she cautiously turned her back and disappeared into the undergrowth, inching closer to a clearing ahead.

There, she could catch a glimpse of the sky, illuminated by a timid half-moon.

A small glimmer of hope.

But her respite was short-lived. The clearing soon became engulfed in an eerie fog, as if conjured from thin air. Chizuru's knees gave way, and she fell to the ground, trembling in the bone-chilling cold. It felt like she had stumbled upon the very gates of hell. Yet, she knew she couldn't stay there. The bandits were aware of her presence, they were hunting her down. Summoning her last reserves of strength, Chizuru forced herself back onto her feet. She became one with the shadows, weaving through the maze of trees, desperate to conceal herself from any prying eyes.

"Chizuru!" A voice suddenly stopped her. It cannot be! she must have imagined it. "Where are you my love? You do not need to be alone in this, you have to trust me. I can protect you."

She froze in her spot, unmoving, holding her breath. On the opposite side, he emerged.

His red like blood hair, his pale skin, his golden eyes. His spear poking from behind his back.

It was Harada! His eyes were searching everywhere. Looking for her. The smile vanished from his face for a second, "Chizuru!" He called more worried now. "Where have you gone? Please do not scare me like this!"

Chizuru's heart pounded in her chest as she locked eyes with Harada. Chizuru's trembling hand reached out, as if drawn by an invisible force, she was urging to get closer to him, to feel his warmth. He must have fought the sickness. The smile returned to Harada's face as he opened his arms. "Come my love, I'm sorry you came in here because of me."

Her heart fluttered, it was him, it was her love and her joy. She stepped slightly from the shadows of the trees. "Sano!" She cried out.

Harada chuckled, "Yes, it's me. I'm okay."

Chizuru took another step forward and then, something flickered in her mind. "Sano, can you tell me when did we get married?" She asked.

Harada's smile vanished and then he was silent for a moment, searching her eyes. "What brought this question all of sudden?" He said.

"Just humor me and answer the question." She replied.

"Vice commander Hijikata was a witness to our wedding. We got married in Kyoto. Then he left for Edo after the battle came to an end with a great loss.I told him I do not wish to be part of the Shinsengumi anymore."

Terrified, Chizuru took a step back and tried to hide herself further between the trees.

"You are not Sano!" She said,

That would be all, for now.
