Chapter 158
Video Tapes
It was getting frustrated.
Its Ruby was very sad, and it didn't know how to make her feel better.
Its Hedy was angry sometimes. Like the other children. Almost the scary kind of angry. The kind of anger that sometimes led to that strange kind of pain it hated. The pain that led to the silence.
It hated that kind of pain the most. It was better when someone got hurt and then they cried or shouted or gradually felt better.
But silence was bad.
Hedy was one of its favorites. It was so happy when she finally came back. It was so sad when she died. When she was silent. But she's okay now, so everything was fine. She was just older and her thoughts felt a little different, but it was still her. Of course, it knew she was always going to come back.
It had grown to hate silence, the closest it ever came to really understanding that thing the beings that belonged to it called 'death'. It was happy when there was movement and constant noise within its walls. Those few hours between the day people leaving and when its Hedy, its Ruby, its Mike, and sometimes its Jeremy arrived were so quiet. Even the bots used that time to be quiet, their thoughts fading to a steady thrum of background noise for it.
It was always restless during those times. It would poke and prod at its little beings' thoughts. Sometimes its sleeping bots, sometimes its ghost children. Occasionally its Michael. None of them ever seemed to notice, except its Goldy sometimes.
But recently those moments were making it more upset. The little games it played didn't seem to make them happy for long. Actually, Puppet was sadder. That wasn't supposed to happen. It didn't understand why Ruby was upset, though it knew the sadness had to do with the Outside, where it couldn't do anything.
There were so many problems and it didn't know how to fix them, or even if it should.
Everything was wrong.
Its Puppet was sad.
Puppet and its Ruby didn't get along like they were supposed to.
Its Spring and its Hedy were close, but they were missing so much.
The Building collected memories. It hoarded them. Cared for them in its own special way. It never forgot anything.
Hedy arrived early, wanting to plan her night. She wanted to look at Spring's head and see if she could weed out any corruption in his memory. She had already tried. Part of her knew her skills weren't enough.
But she had to keep trying.
Later on, Hedy would look back and be thankful the building at least waited a few days before doing anything else crazy.
Everyone was still recovering from the stressful event of being in someone else's body.
Chica almost got herself zapped by nearly washing her hands in the sink without thinking.
There were a few more instances like that with near misses and almost accidents.
A couple of the day staff actually asked for a day or so off.
Poor Izzy still wasn't sure she believed Mangle's promise that the postman wasn't going to bother her anymore.
They all needed the breather.
Ruby seemed to be gradually getting her energy back, although she still wasn't ready to really talk about Jeremy's news. And neither of them brought up the thing with Sally. She never called back.
So yes, Hedy was grateful a few days went by before anything else ridiculous happened. But at the time Hedy was just confused when she got to work early and found the TV from the break room on its dolly, plugged in and connected to a vaguely familiar camcorder.
Ruby and Mike weren't there yet and the bots were all offline, waiting for their humans. Jeremy was visiting that night, but there was no way he was already there.
Hedy glanced suspiciously at Toby on the secondary stage. It's possible he dragged the TV out for some video games, but the projector and a big white sheet strung across the stage was a much easier choice than the TV if he was going to play her games out with the rest of them. The old television was better left in the staff room.
"Mari?" Hedy called softly.
Puppet cracked open his box, his eyes shining out of the dark.
"Did someone leave this here?"
"Obviously."
Hedy rolled her eyes. "Prick. I meant who? Did Toby bring it out?"
Puppet stood up in his box more. He looked confused. "It wasn't there when the staff all left."
Hedy stared a bit.
"And it wasn't there when I shut down," Puppet added.
Hedy frowned, knowing Puppet was always the last one to "fall asleep." She pulled out her tablet and flicked through the cameras. There didn't seem to anyone else that wasn't supposed to be there. So not a break in. She kept flicking through.
"How do you feel?" she asked Puppet conversationally without looking up.
"Like I just had my mind ripped out and someone else was stuffed in while I was in their body."
Hedy grimaced. "Still not over that, huh?"
Puppet's crossed arms were her answer.
"We'll move it later," Hedy decided, moving so she was sitting in front of the TV, because why not? She pulled out her notebook and began going over her work notes while Puppet climbed out of his box.
"Sorry to wake you up."
"I'm fine." Puppet dragged a chair over and sat next to her, the both of them staring at a black screen. "I think the building put this here."
Hedy looked up but she didn't feel surprised. "It feels…pleased with itself," she admitted, looking at the television set dubiously.
"I prefer the days when the building wasn't an entity but just a vague thing we noticed but didn't talk about," Puppet said dryly.
The building rumbled, irritated. A party hat flew off a table and clocked the bot in the head.
Puppet glared at the ceiling. "You heard me."
"Oh please. I just got here. Don't be starting a fight! With the building," Hedy complained. She sighed and looked back at the TV. "What's this for then?" she asked the empty air.
The screen clicked to life with a faint whine and they could hear the faint whirr of the camcorder running a tape.
Nothing happened for a moment, just static.
"Chica! Look what I got."
Both Hedy and Puppet stiffened at the voice as the picture turned to an image of Chica turning toward the camera and looking down. A very short someone was holding the camera. It looked like they were in a restaurant kitchen.
Chica chuckled and reached down to pick up the speaker. The camera turned around to show a little girl smiling at the camera she held at arm's length as she made a silly face at the lens while Chica held her.
"What's that Wiggy?"
"Jeremy got a new camera for his birthday! So I'm playing with the old one."
"Oh! Tell him Happy Birthday for me. Did you eat a lot of cake?"
"We tried, but we burned it…" the little girl said dejectedly, the camera's view shifting until the two of them were out of sight, Wiggy apparently too tired to pay attention to pointing the camera in the right direction.
Chica giggled. "Aw you should have asked me to help!"
"What's this?" a quiet voice interrupted Hedy's spiraling thoughts, and the video paused on its own.
Hedy looked up at the Original's stage. They were all awake.
The Toys were awake too, staring at the screen in confusion.
Chica stared, still waiting for an answer.
"I don't know…" Hedy admitted weakly.
Puppet stood up and turned the TV off. Luckily, the building seemed to oblige. For now.
Hedy didn't say a word. She just sat quietly as Spring came in, replacing Puppet's spot. He usually wandered in from Fright to greet them after his own nap in his part of the building so he didn't run into the evening day staff while they cleaned up.
"Hedy?" he asked, confused at what he just witnessed.
Hedy winced. The building was very pleased that Spring was present now. After a moment of thought she leaned on him, surprising the rabbit with the affection.
Mangle didn't even show that playful jealousy she liked to, too disturbed by the brief video.
The bots milled around, quietly wondering about what was going on until Ruby signaled her arrival.
The teen stopped in the doorway and looked around suspiciously.
"What happened now?" she demanded as she took in their expressions. Mike wasn't far behind her. They'd apparently arrived at the same time.
Jeremy should be there in a few minutes too.
Before Hedy could answer, the tv turned back on.
"Hedwig! What are you doing! Get down from there!"
That voice. "Dad?" Hedy whispered.
"What the fuck?" Ruby asked.
"But I almost got it!" a little girl's voice cried.
"What did I say? I need to get to work, love. We have to go or I'll be late. I'll buy you a new kite later."
"I don't want a new kite! Felix made me this one."
"Hedwig, I won't tell you again. "
Tears pricked at her eyes but she climbed out of the tree. Immediately, strong large hands held her arms.
"Hedwig, love, those branches are too high for you to climb. You could get very hurt if you fell."
"Yes, Daddy."
"Good girl, now get in the car. Jeremy, put that camera down! What were you thinking, just filming her like that? She could have fallen."
"She was fine..."
"She's six, Jeremy."
"What the fuck?" Jeremy echoed Ruby's question as he stopped dead in the doorway. "What the hell is this?"
"I don't know, I just got here," Ruby snapped back. She'd moved over to stand next to Foxy as they all stared at the screen that wouldn't turn off when Puppet hit the button.
Bonnie had flinched at the sound of their dad's voice.
"Michael! Michael!"
"What do you want, kid?"
"Look, I drew this picture for you."
"Why?"
"I dunno. It's a present."
Michael took the picture and studied it. He blinked a little. "How do you know about Spring?"
Hedy voice sounded confused. "Who's that?"
Michael turned the drawing back to her and pointed. "Why'd you draw a yellow rabbit, Wiggy?"
Hedy shrugged. "I had a dream. And I like yellow," she said simply.
"You don't remember meeting him?" Michael pressed.
Hedy just looked more confused.
Michael rolled his eyes. "Never mind, kid," he grunted, ruffling her hair with a sigh.
"What the fuck?!" Ruby repeated, sounding properly agitated now as Spring went tense.
Goldy had popped into the room, likely to ask what was going on only to go silent at the sight of the video.
Some of the clips were audio-only and a few were out of order to those who remembered.
"This is Mags. She's my favorite."
*Static Crackle.*
"I still think the old Foxy's better," Felix's voice startled them.
"I still think Chica's better. This one's broken. So is the other Foxy."
"Nuh uh, Mags is just special," Hedy said.
"What the FUCK?!" That was Foxy. He also got smacked by Chica for the swear.
"Hello hello, how's my favorite little girl?"
"Hi, Uncle Scott. Can I come in?"
"Aww, come on. Are you seriously going to just tease Steve's voice and not show him to us?! I need to know if he looks like a Steve too!"
It was the first reaction out of Ruby that wasn't shocked anger.
She still looked generally upset though.
Hedy hadn't said a word but her lips were pressed into a thin line. She couldn't deny missing Scott's voice though.
"Oh, I don't know Wiggy...you know how the manager gets about kids in the office." His voice dropped to a whisper. "But I won't tell if you don't."
"Yay!" Hedy quietly cheered.
"Okay, here's how we do it. Every time someone comes in, you duck in that vent right there until I give you the all clear. Got it? And be careful with Jeremy's camera okay?"
"Okay."
"Are we going to get an explanation?!" Ruby asked, her voice going a pitch higher as the short clips kept playing with no break between them.
"Hey, Wiggy."
"Hi, Mr. Micheal. Are you still mad at me?"
"What? No way, kid."
Ruby let out an inarticulate sound of rage.
Hedy was starting to feel a little sick as the clips played through.
"Stop there," she said, a little pleadingly.
The building finally obliged and they watched as the camera froze as it panned up to show Michael's face, living and breathing. He was smiling.
It seemed nice but in hindsight it just looked predatory.
"What's going on?" Goldy asked weakly.
"We don't know," Freddy answered, sounding a little winded. "It just… The building started playing this."
Before they could take any longer trying to make sense of anything, the building seemed to think that Hedy had had enough of a break as it continued.
"Where'd you get that, Wiggy?" Michael asked, crouching to the camera's level. It panned down to stay on him.
"Jeremy got a new one!"
"Don't you think your brother wouldn't be happy about you taking his stuff?"
"I'm not going to break it!" Hedy said, clearly insulted.
"I'm sure you won't." There was a pause. "Hey Wiggy? It's getting pretty noisy."
"Yeah. There's a birthday party."
"And you weren't invited?"
"I don't know them," Hedy said confused. "It's rude to go to a party if you're not invited. That's what Puppet said."
Hedy glanced at Puppet who stiffened at the mention of his past self. They hadn't seen any of the bots in the video yet beyond Chica and a snippet of Mangle.
Everyone was getting pretty uncomfortable, but they were too aware that the building would do what it wanted to try and stop it.
Jeremy had moved to sit next to his sister, looking like he'd rather be pulling her out of the room.
Everyone else reluctantly moved to sit down more comfortably.
Hedy was looking very small in her chair, Spring on one side, her brother on the other. She glanced up to meet Ruby's eyes. The teen looked highly unhappy with the situation. She'd honestly just wanted some normal to help her deal with her shit. And now there was going to be more shit on top of everything.
"Well, I bet it's boring without anyone to play with. Where's your friends?"
"They don't live here silly! They went home!"
"Without you?"
"Daddy is still working," Hedy sounded pretty miffed.
"Alright. Alright. Well I have a new friend you might like to meet."
Everyone stiffened in horror at that. Was this when it happened? No, Kid Hedy had mentioned the other kids were gone. So it couldn't be…
"You have to turn the camera off though. It's a secret."
"Okay!"
The camera shut off and Jeremy's breath hitched. The next clip started up again. They couldn't see anything at first. It was dark.
Then the camera shifted to show a crack of light from a partially opened door. The camera was set down and there was the sound of little feet and a chair scraping the floor before the lights went on.
Spring squeaked in shock.
That was him!
The camera was focused on a shut-down Spring. He seemed in much better condition and wasn't discoloured like he was now. Someone jumped into view and they finally saw little six-year-old Hedy.
Specifically, they got a close-up of her nose.
"Hello hello!" she chirped, backing up. "Mr. Michael has to go back to work, but he said I could play here! It's a secret room! Isn't it cool?"
Hedy definitely looked ill. She understood why the building had hidden these tapes. But why was it showing them to everyone now?
Still, she couldn't look away, drinking in the long lost memories no matter how much their promises terrified her.
Wiggy propped the camera on the chair she used and ran to Spring, still off.
"Hello Mr. Rabbit. I'm Wiggy. Nice to meet you!"
Silence.
"Can I interview you? Okay? Sure."
"Did you want to be a reporter or something?" Ruby asked, barely holding it together. They could all pick up her annoyance in her tone. She was NOT happy with the situation.
"I think so," Hedy murmured.
"What's your name?"
They didn't expect the small movement and the soft voice.
"Spring Bonnie."
"Really? I know a Bonnie. Two actually," Wiggy didn't seem surprised by the talking at all.
"You can call me Spring though. Everyone else does." Spring lifted his head as much as he could to look at her properly.
"Okay. I'm Wiggy!"
"I heard you, little one. You shouldn't be here. Why aren't you out with the other children?"
Spring sounded so different. Older, calmer and with more confidence and a bit of amusement. It made Goldy and Puppet flinch.
"I was bored. Uncle Scott wouldn't let me take apart his phone. Again."
Hedy actually cracked a weak chuckle at that while Ruby snorted.
"I see. You're Scott's niece?"
"You know Uncle Scott?"
"Oh yes. He's like my uncle too. He helped get some of my parts. He helped build me and my sister."
That shocked them, except Puppet and Goldy. Ruby turned wide eyes on them.
"Steve helped build you guys?!"
Goldy looked away and Puppet didn't answer.
"Oh so he's like your daddy!"
"No! Oh. Well. Sort of. Uncle, I suppose."
"Who's your sister? Is she around?"
"No. She's...sleeping. Her name's Golden Freddy. But she goes by Goldy."
"Freddy is a boy's name."
"We know. That's why she goes by Goldy.
"You have any other brothers or sisters?"
"Several. I have a big brother. His name is Marionette."
"I know Mari!"
"He's working?"
"Yeah! He's outside. Want me to go get him?"
"No he's busy. I'll see him later."
"Okay. Do you want to play?"
"Well, sure, Wiggy. But I'm kind of boring to play with. I can't move very much… right now."
"Why not?" Wiggy moved her hands to hold his face up to look at her and tilted her head as she looked at him.
"Oh my gosh, you're so cute," Goldy whispered.
Hedy sighed at her while a few other bots mumbled their agreement.
"I'm...just..."
"Are you broken?"
"..."
"I can help! Daddy showed me how to fix stuff. One of my dolls stopped talking. It made a weird noise. But my Dad showed me how to fix it."
"Wiggy, thank you, but I think my problem is a little more complicated than that-What are you doing!?"
They watched as Wiggy carefully pushed Spring away from the wall with as much strength as her small body could manage until she could see part of his back.
"Whaaat are you doing?" Toby mumbled, confused.
"I don't know, Toby," Hedy said, equally confused.
"Wiggy. Wiggy! What are you doing back there?" Spring sounded a bit frantic as he couldn't turn to see her.
"Daddy showed me how to change the batteries. He took out a piece of my doll's back. Maybe you need a new battery."
"I don't. I don't. Please don't touch anything, WIGGY. Don't-"
"What's this?"
Some of the bots in present day let out a startled cry as Spring's body on the television violently jerked and they heard younger Hedy scream in surprise at the startling movement. The sound was horrible too. All snapping and clicking and grinding gears setting into place.
Spring shouted, half in pain and half in shock, perfectly in sync with the old him who had the same reaction as the video him jerked around several times.
Present day Spring covered his face with a squeak. His spring locks. That...that's what Michael looked like dying inside of him. Was it that frightening every time he switched modes?
"And I thought I was the irresponsible one?" Ruby said in surprise, an eyebrow raised.
"You have no idea what a terror she was as a kid," Jeremy told her.
Hedy smacked him.
"Wiggy!" Spring said, frantically turning to check on the girl. "Are you okay? Did I hurt you?" He carefully picked up the shocked girl and held her in his lap, checking her hands for broken fingers or blood.
Wiggy just stared, a little shaken. "Are you okay? Did I hurt you?" she started crying, not realizing she was repeating Spring's exact question. "I-I'm sorry! I thought..."
"Shhh. It's okay."
"Okay. Pause it for a second," Ruby ordered and surprisingly the building listened, stopping the video on an image of Hedy's worried tears as Spring sweetly cradled her.
Ruby sat back and looked at Hedy and Spring.
"Man you were one stupid kid."
"I'm picking up on that," Hedy said sarcastically. She glanced at Spring.
Everyone stared for a moment.
"You really don't remember any of that?" Mangle asked.
Spring and Hedy both shook their heads.
"You seemed sweet. I wish I did," Spring said regretfully.
"Me too..." Hedy murmured, still leaning against him since earlier.
"I wonder how much we're going to see?" Jeremy wondered. "Hedy took my camera a lot I think."
"Man, if I don't show up at least once in this..." Toby complained jokingly, trying to relieve some of the tension.
"I want to see Steve!" Ruby demanded.
"Scott."
"Steve! Everyone's seen him but me!"
"I'm sure Hedy or I caught him on camera at least once," Jeremy said, trying to calm her down. "He should show up."
"Shh. It's okay..." Spring said softly. "I didn't mean to scare you."
"What was that?" Hedy gasped. "Did you break more?"
"No. No, I'm fine. Better now. I can move now."
"Did I fix you?"
"Sure did. You should be a doctor when you grow up."
"Hmm," Ruby said with a smirk. "Everyone, blame Spring for us getting Hedy."
"I'm not going to decide to be a mechanic just because of an old memory like that," Hedy said. That I don't even remember. "There were a lot of things that added up to it."
"Wanna bet?"
"No, I don't bet with you."
"Pity."
Spring adjusted Hedy in his lap, still checking her over.
"Does anything hurt?" he asked.
"No," Wiggy chirped, getting over the fright quickly.
"Okay... Thank you for...fixing me, Wiggy. But you really shouldn't touch things if a grown-up sounds worried like that."
"But you're not a grown up. You're an anima...amina...robot."
Hedy groaned and chuckled at her old self.
"Loopholes," Ruby sing-songed.
"Okay, yeah. You still shouldn't have touched that if I told you not to."
"I'm sorry."
"Just remember that. You could've gotten hurt."
"Okay."
"So what do you want to play?"
"How about..."
"HEDWIG LAMARR FITZGERALD!" someone shouted, muffled but clearly angry.
Wiggy jumped up with a squeak. "That's my daddy. I got to go."
"That's alright."
"I'll come back okay?"
"..." Spring looked conflicted for a moment. "I'd like that..."
"Okay!" Wiggy jumped up to kiss Spring on the cheek with a big "mwah" and ran out.
Hedy covered her face in embarrassment.
Spring stared at her in confusion.
"Did you just...kiss people you just met?"
"Yes," Jeremy deadpanned.
"Shut up," Hedy hissed as the others laughed.
Ruby in particular was snickering quite loudly.
"Close the door...!" Spring tried, but Wiggy was already gone. And she left the camera. Spring sighed and got up slowly, using the wall for support. He stretched a bit, wincing at the pulling and slight snapping.
He walked shakily toward the camera and they lost sight of him for a moment.
The picture spun as Spring presumably picked up the device.
"How the heck do you turn this off?" he mumbled to himself, turning the camera over several times trying to figure it out.
After a minute, the room brightened as the door opened wider.
For some reason, Spring held it in front of him like he was still trying to record.
They could tell he looked down each side of the hallway, cautiously. It was quieting down, sounding like closing time. After a minute they watched as Spring left down the hallway, catching a glimpse of the door he came out of.
They stared at it, the building pausing the blurry picture without anyone asking.
It was a wall. There was no door to be seen except a small crack in the wallpaper.
Ruby looked pissed, but didn't comment as the video kept playing without anyone's input, as if the building was impatient.
They watched Spring turn and go down a wide hallway that opened up into a large room.
"Where's he going?" Ruby asked.
"Guard office," Jeremy said in a strange tone.
The nostalgia was hitting the bots hard in a bad way.
At the end of the hall was a man sitting at a desk with a computer, his head bent over some paperwork.
"Are you kidding?! That's the guard office?!" Ruby shouted. She remembered Steve's description, but she still wasn't expecting a freaking wide open room with a hallway right in front.
Hedy, Jeremy, and the bots didn't react to her outburst. They just stared at the man, all giving a strange reaction, breath hitching and weight shifting.
Ruby looked at them weirdly.
"Hey, Scott?" Spring said, and the man's head shot up.
"Oh hey, Spring!"
Ruby's eyes widened dramatically. "STEVE!"
"Ruby, sit down," Hedy said, with a distant tone.
Scott was pretty normal looking. Brown hair with a thinning hairline, grey eyes, long nose, and he wore glasses and a crooked smile.
He seemed surprised to see Spring, but not overly so.
"I KNEW HE LOOKED LIKE A STEVE!" Ruby crowed and Foxy had to pull her down to sit again.
"Whatcha got there?"
"Your niece found me."
"Wiggy?"
"She left this behind. Could you get it back to her?"
"Oh yeah sure! Hey, how are you doing? Haven't seen you in a while."
"...I was wound up, Scott," Spring sounded tired.
Scott seemed shocked. "Really? Who did that?" He suddenly sounded pissed.
"You didn't know?"
"I haven't had a chance to check parts and services in a while. The manager's being an ass."
"Well I woke up wound up and couldn't move since a couple of days ago."
"...I don't know who would do that. I'll check into it. How're the others?"
"They need to be out, Scott," Spring scolded, not mentioning how he wasn't in the room with the others.
Scott was quiet for a minute. "I'm working on it...I didn't know this was the plan, Spring." He sounded regretful. "I really didn't."
"You're on the board!"
"Not anymore! They kicked me off. Don't know why. But they told me to stay on as Head of Security or not be allowed back," Scott leaned back and looked upset. "There was supposed to be a separate location for the Toys, I swear."
The video cut for a brief moment, probably turned off, before the picture came back. The camera was back with Hedy who was clearly visiting Spring again, the camera shakily pointed at him..
"Your father doesn't want you in the back rooms Hedy." Spring was lightly scolding her.
"I wanted to visit you!" Hedy sounded like the scolding wasn't doing much.
Spring sighed. "It is nice to see you again but I don't want you to get in trouble with your dad."
"He's busy." they could hear the pout in her voice. "With the other robots. He doesn't let me watch him work anymore."
Panic briefly flashed across Spring's face before he hid it again, but Hedy didn't notice.
The Originals flinched and everyone knew what that meant. Bonnie looked away and Foxy grit his teeth.
Guilt flashed across Hedy's face while Jeremy looked away.
Hedy continued talking to Spring, telling him about the game she'd played with the Toys earlier when a childish voice interrupted them.
"Bunny!" It sounded like a very young child.
Hedy turned but the camera wasn't pointed at the new voice, instead it still showed Spring who seemed very surprised to see another child in the hidden room.
"Hi!" Hedy didn't seem put off that someone was interrupting them.
"What are you doing here little one?" Spring looked pretty concerned. The new child must be very young to get that reaction. The bots always tried to get the very small children back to their parents if they wandered away.
"Hiding." the answer was followed by a giggle. "Hide 'n seek. 'M winning!"
"How'd you find this room?" Hedy sounded curious, surprisingly not annoyed to suddenly be sharing her secret place.
"Talking."
"You heard us talking?" Spring asked.
"Uh huh! Sneaky door!"
Spring couldn't help a smile at that. "Yes, the door is sneaky. But your parents are probably worried about you."
"Nuh uh. 'M winning!"
That seemed to be all the child was interested in at that moment.
"Kid knows what she wants." Ruby laughed. "Probably giving her parents a heart attack."
"Who you?"
The child was coming closer.
"I'm Wiggy, this is Spring."
"Hi!" the child seemed pretty happy to be meeting a new bot.
"What's your name?" Spring asked since she didn't seem to plan on going back to her parents any time soon. Hedy was busy moving again and set the camera down on a nearby box so she wouldn't have to carry it anymore. As the kid answered they finally got to see her.
"'M Ruby." the little black haired, green eyed toddler had a beaming smile on her face as she talked to Spring. "Ruby Stone."
Ruby literally fell over as she choked on air. Everyone else just stared at the screen in pure disbelief.
"Whoa hold up," Jeremy freaked while Puppet made a weird sputtering noise.
"Whaaat the fuck..." Hedy muttered, staring and clearly just as shocked.
"Hedy," Spring scolded, but it was weak, he was also shocked.
"Nice to meet you, Ruby! That's a pretty name," Wiggy said cheerily. "You can hide with us..."
"Hedy wait..."
"Spring is going to teach me how to read."
"Now hold on I didn't..." Spring said. He paused. "You don't know how to read?"
Wiggy immediately turned around and held out a picture book to Spring with a cheeky smile. "Can you show me? Jeremy was being a butt and Felix made fun of me. You can show Ruby too!"
"Bunny!'
Ruby was still staring at the screen, trying to process what she was seeing. She was shocked speechless for once, mouth opening and closing without a word.
Toddler Ruby ran forward and promptly climbed into Spring's lap who was clearly torn between making the girls happy and getting the youngest to her parents. Ruby patted his arm curiously.
"Not like blue bunny?" she asked curiously.
"Oh, no, Toy Bonnie and I are different." he told her.
"Blue bunny funny." she giggled. "Glitter in face."
Toby had a peculiar expression on his face. All of the Toys were clearly trying to remember her but weren't having much luck. And it freaked them out.
"Glitter?" Spring asked.
"Blue bunny sparkly!"
Foxy still let out a chuckle at that, despite his shocked state.
"I see." Spring looked pretty amused at that. "Let's look at your book then Wiggy."
Suddenly the door opened again and a mildly exasperated huff reached them. "Spring, how did these two get in here?"
"Mari!" Ruby let out a happy squeal and scrambled out of Spring's lap to jump on Puppet. "Mari Mari Mari Mari!"
Well...she clearly didn't have the clown phobia yet...
"I think I'm gonna faint." Ruby muttered weakly.
Puppet looked a little ill too. He tilted his head so far it looked like his neck was about to snap.
"Hi Mari!" Hedy greeted. She pointed the camera at him. "Say cheese!"
Puppet was in shockingly better shape. His mask seemed not as dull and the tear streak paint on his cheeks was a brighter purple. By comparison, even with the old video, it seemed like the fabric of his suit was less faded than now too.
"Wiggy, please put that down. Spring..."
"Don't look at me," Spring said, and he seemed to shrug. "Hedy found the door last week."
"Nuh uh. Mr. Michael showed me," Hedy corrected
"He's not supposed to," Mari said. "Spring."
They watched dumbstruck as Puppet picked up Ruby and balanced her on his hip like a mother. She giggled and poked his mask. He looked at her and poked her nose in return.
"That's it... I'm passing out," Ruby said, although she didn't and continued to stare.
Hedy made a strange, strangled noise.
"I didn't know. Hedy woke me up."
Puppet didn't seem to like that but he didn't say anything in front of the children.
"And you little miss, your parents are looking for you." he said to Ruby who just giggled again.
"'M winning!" was all she said.
"Hide and seek." Spring explained when Puppet looked back at him.
"Well, I think you won." Puppet shook his head in clear amusement. "Now, let's return you to your parents."
"Mommy and daddy?"
"Yes they're looking for you."
"Oops."
Puppet looked back at Hedy. "You shouldn't be in here either. You know your father doesn't like you being here." The kids didn't pick up on the clear note of dislike in Puppet's voice when he mentioned her father.
"But I wanted to visit Spring!"
"Yellow bunny!" Ruby decided to add. "Soft, like my toy."
"Yes you little hug monster. He's like your plush toy."
Spring rolled his eyes at the clear tease directed at him.
Ruby was now watching with an unreadable expression. Pain had flashed across her face at the mention of her parents but she quickly hid it.
"What. The. Fuck?" She hissed.
