Sarah had hit the jackpot. Before it genuinely registered with her what had happened, she was surrounded by confetti, flashing lights, loud bells, and people screaming, cheering, and congratulating her. The hotel staff soon brought a giant check, with her name on it, and tried to talk her into taking the penthouse suit. Sarah refused it all and asked that they not make so much fuss and let her and her friends enjoy their evening.
It took some doing, but she and the others eventually made it to the bar and met up with the rest of the group. Heidi, of course, couldn't wait to tell them about Sarah's luck.
Hugging tightly onto her arm, Heidi grinned. "You're staying with me all night and sharing that luck."
Sarah's luck didn't hold out, though. She stayed sober with a drunk Heidi on her arm for the following two casinos. At the third, there was a mix-up with her drink. She had ordered a virgin daiquiri, and either Heidi didn't know that, forgot to say virgin, or the bartender messed it up, but when she went for refills, she returned with two very strong drinks per person. Sarah noticed the alcohol taste immediately, but before she could question it, Heidi made a toast to Christy, wishing her a wonderful wedding and marriage. Sarah raised her glass along with everyone else.
"One drink won't hurt, especially if I nurse it," Sarah thought. After all, it was a huge cold drink.
But then Heidi made a toast to the other Sarah, thanking her for this wonderful trip. Followed by a toast to Dani, then Laura, and Sarah. Then she toasted the casino staff, the city of Las Vegas, and on and on until they all were out of alcohol, and Sarah had to grab her head a few times due to brain freeze.
Luckily for Sarah, it was time to move on to their next stop. Walking by Dick's, they stopped and laughed at the funny hats that several people were wearing when they exited. "That looks fun!" Heidi said with a hiccup.
Sarah nodded and giggled in agreement, feeling a slight buzz from the alcohol. "I've heard about this place. They are paid to be rude and insult you."
Heidi laughed. "Love to take Britton there. I'd help them insult the bastard." Heidi mused. "Hell, I'd tip them extra to let me write on his funny hat." She smiled evilly. "Life is short, and so is my dick."
Sarah smiled. "I'd pay to see that."
"Who would you take, Sar?" Heidi asked
Sarah thought about it a moment and shook her head at the image of a tall blonde with wild hair and blue eyes that popped into her head.
Before she could reply, Dani grabbed them both by the hand and pulled them to the door. "Come on, the others are inside." She told them as she led them to the theatre.
Christy decided she wanted to see a show. Sarah was thankful for the distraction. She had no idea why he had popped into her mind when Heidi asked her about taking someone to Dick's.
Instead of thinking about it or him, Sarah focused on the show they would be seeing. Somehow, they managed to get last-minute tickets to Cirque du Soleil. It seemed an odd choice to Sarah, but this was Christy's party. It was a marvelous show, but Sarah sometimes had trouble focusing on it. Her mind would randomly flash images of things she had long forgotten and had hoped never to remember.
Some performers' costumes reminded her of strange creatures that had once danced around removing body parts and tossing them about. She shuddered at the thought of them wanting to take off her head.
The acrobatics were thrilling. But the way they hung to poles and bars suspended from the ceiling made her think of a room of stairs that went every way imaginable. Needing to clear her head, Sarah excused herself to the restroom.
Splashing cold water on her face, Sarah tried to clear her mind. Why did her mind keep going back to that place? With a sigh, she dried her face and looked at her reflection. She saw herself looking older each time she looked in the mirror: new blemishes, lines, and dark circles under her eyes.
"Heidi's right. We're not getting any younger. Hell with Jareth and his sparkly ass kingdom. I'm the champion. I conquered his Labyrinth and saved Toby." She pulled the lip gloss from her purse and reapplied it. "Now it's time to live a little and enjoy myself. This is a vacation, after all."
With newfound determination, Sarah returned to her seat with her friends and watched the rest of the show. "Everything ok Sar?" Heidi whispered.
"Yup, everything's great," she replied with a grin.
Sarah enjoyed the rest of the show. She laughed, cheered, and clapped for the performers, not even caring if she was loud. One of the performers came out in a wild-looking blonde wig with a mask on. His clothes were wrinkled and old-looking but were form-fitting, including tight pants. Sarah's mind noticed the similarities between him and a certain King, especially when he started juggling a glass ball. While he was talented, she had most certainly seen the Goblin King do more impressive things without even trying.
"He cheated, though," Sarah thought. "He has magic."
Sarah forced herself to look anywhere on the stage except where that one performer was. She was so busy following the ones flying through the air that she overlooked several performers running into the crowd. Each had a single red rose and handed them to random audience members. She nearly jumped out of her seat when a rose appeared before her face.
The man in the wild wig and mask she had been avoiding found her and bowed graciously before her as he offered her the flower. Hesitantly, she took the rose, and he stood up and blew her a kiss before running back to the stage.
"Lucky!" Christy stage whispered to Sarah.
"Told you she has all the luck tonight," Heidi smirked.
After the show, they decided to be wild and ride some rollercoasters. Sarah took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of the rose before laying it down on a table. She knew it would never survive a rollercoaster, and it was too long to fit in her purse. "At least this way, maybe someone else can enjoy it." She said softly as she sat it down.
Christy was nervous about riding coasters, so Heidi suggested a few shots to help her nerves. Sarah was secretly glad for her suggestion. She wasn't a fan of rollercoasters, hadn't been since she almost fell out of one as a child, but she was determined to be wild and have fun.
After a few shots at a nearby bar, all of them were named after something sex-related, the girls made their way up to the roof to ride the Big Apple Coaster. The car was designed to look like a taxi cab, which Dani thought was cool, but commented she was glad it was much cleaner than a NY taxi.
Heidi insisted on being in the front row of the first car. Christy was talked into riding beside her; after all, it was her Bachelorette party, and she had to experience everything to the fullest extent. Laura and Dani took the second row, and the two Sarahs took the third row—a few other random people filled in seats behind them. Getting in, Sarah was relieved to see you were strapped in securely with a seat belt, shoulder straps, and a lap bar. Once they were all in safely, the ride started. As they climbed the first big hill, Sarah's stomach tightened in a knot. She took some deep breaths and told herself she would be ok. As they reached the peak of the first hill, Sarah forced herself to keep her eyes open and gripped the lap bar tightly.
"Here we go!" Heidi screamed as they went over the edge, and the coaster raced down and around the track.
