11th April, 1912
Lily woke up the following day and climbed up on to Jack's bed "daddy" she said. "Yes?" He yawned as she woke him up "I'm hungry" "OK" he said as he stretched "let's get ready and then we'll go for breakfast" "OK" Lily said as she climbed down from the bunk.
"Morning" Jenny and Sam said as they woke up. "Oh, morning, sorry if we woke you" Jack gave a guilty smile "you didn't" Jenny shook her head and smiled. "Are you heading for breakfast?" Sam asked "yeah" Jack nodded "mind if we join you?" He asked "no, not at all" Jack smiled.
Once the 5 of them were changed, they headed to the dining room to eat. "So, up to much today?" Sam asked but Jack shook his head "I think we're going to go outside for a while after breakfast. You're welcome to come if you'd like?" He offered "thank you… but I think we'll explore the ship today" Jenny smiled "fair enough, just keep an eye on Sam… this one went running off when we went to explore the ship last night" he nodded and rolled his eyes at Lily. "Oh dear" Jenny said "guess that was frightening" she continued "to say the least" Jack nodded.
—
After breakfast Jack and Lily headed up to the deck. Jack sat on one of the benches as he sketched Lily who was skipping around in front of him. "What's up?" He asked as she stopped and looked up at the upper deck. "That's the lady, Daddy! That's Rose" she said, still watching her "Oh…" Jack said, also watching Rose "you're right, she is pretty" he smiled. Lily didn't reply and just watched Rose.
Rose felt someone watching her and looked down, seeing Lily looking up at her. She waved, then smiled at the man behind her - Jack. Lily was disappointed when she saw Rose walk away but went back to skipping around shortly after.
—
"Hello" Rose said as she approached Jack. Lily was too busy playing with a little boy to notice Rose.
"Hi" Jack smiled "I'm guessing you're Rose?" He asked. She nodded "how do you know?" "Oh I've heard all about the pretty lady with the pretty dress… I'm Jack, it's nice to meet you" he smiled "thank you for helping Lily last night. I really appreciate it" he continued "not at all. I only did what any decent person would have done" she nodded "well it doesn't sound like any other 1st class passengers were jumping at the chance of helping her, so really, thank you" he nodded back "would you mind if I joined you?" Rose asked, glancing at the bench "of course not" Jack smiled as he moved over so she could sit down. "So, is she OK?" Rose asked about Lily. Jack nodded "she's fine. I think she was a bit shook up last night, but she's fine now, thank you" he smiled. "Good" she also smiled. "What are you drawing?" She asked "Lily…" he smiled "mind if I see?" She said "course not" he said as he passed over his sketch book. "Wow, these are incredible Jack… sorry, do you mind if call you that, or would you prefer Mr Dawson?" She asked politely "God no, Jack works fine" he chuckled. "Well Jack, you have a real talent" she said as she handed him the folder back "thank you" Jack smiled and looked up hearing small footsteps coming his way.
"Hey sweetheart" he smiled at Lily "hi Daddy" she said "hi Rose…" she said shyly "hello Lily, are you OK?" Rose smiled, getting a nod in response "I like your dress" she said, making Jack chuckle "how did I know that was coming?" He smirked and tapped Lily's nose, making her giggle "hey, I think my fiancé is in the smoking room. He'll be there for some time… would you like to come to my room and you can try some on?" Rose offered. Lily gasped "really?!" Rose laughed "yes" "yes please!" She replied "come on then" Rose smiled as she stood up from the bench, Jack doing the same as he took Lily's hand and followed Rose.
—
"Wow" Jack said surprised "not bad" he raised an eyebrow as he looked around the room. "It's big in here" Lily said. "Hmm… too big" Rose said as she opened her wardrobe and got some dresses out. "Do you want to take your coat off?" Rose suggested and took it from her as Lily removed it. "Which do you want to try on first?" She said "that one please" Lily pointed at the red dress. Rose took it off the hanger and helped her step in to it, the dress of course weighed her down, at least 10 sizes too big. "I look pretty" Lily smiled at herself in the mirror "you always look pretty!" Jack corrected her, Lily didn't reply, instead she just laughed as Rose put a huge hat on her head, covering her eyes.
—
They spent around half an hour in Rose's room before Lily said she was hungry. "We best to and get you some lunch" he smiled at her as Rose helped her lift the dress off her. "I know the answer it probably no… but would you like to come with us?" Jack offered "oh, I'd love to… but my finance will be expecting me to join him to eat. Thank you though…" she smiled weakly, disappointed she couldn't join them. "Not to worry" he smiled back. "Come on Lily" he said as he picked up her coat from the sofa. "Say thank you" "thank you Rose. I had lots of fun" Lily smiled "you're welcome" Rose smiled "you looked beautiful, but like your Dad said, I'm sure you always look beautiful" she nodded and watched as Lily took Jack's hand "thank you…" she said quietly. "Hopefully we'll see you soon?" Jack questioned "I'll try my very best" she nodded and smiled weakly then watched as Jack and Lily left.
—
Rose went up to the dining room to meet Cal for lunch. "Hello sweet pea" "Hello darling" Rose forced a smile "have you been up too much this morning?" He asked "Just a walk around the deck" Rose lied. She knew Cal would be furious if he knew Rose had been spending time with 3rd class passengers, especially when one was a handsome young man, so she just hoped no one had seen her talking to Jack. Cal nodded "sounds pleasant" he smiled, believing her "it was" she forced a smile back.
"What can I get you for lunch Sir, Miss?" The waiter asked. Rose went to answer but Cal got there first "we'll have the steak" he replied and handed the menus over "steak is OK, isn't it?" He asked Rose "yes" she replied, really she had wanted the chicken, but the argument wasn't worth having.
—
After Jack and Lily had eaten their tea later that evening, they headed to the general room where music was playing and people were dancing. Jack spun Lily round as he danced with her… he'd been through a lot of tough times in his life, yet when he looked at her daughter, everything seemed to make sense.
—
Once Rose had excused herself from tea, she headed down to steerage in secret. She stopped and smiled to herself as she saw Jack and Lily dance together, Lily giggling none stop. "Daddy! Rose is over there" Lily pointed as she saw Rose "it's rude to point Lil's" Jack said "oops… sorry…" she said as she put her arm down. Rose walked over to the two of them smiling. "Hello again" "hi" Jack smiled at her, forgetting about Lily for a moment. "Can I go and play with Oliver, daddy?" Lily asked "yes, but stay where I can see you" Jack said as he put her back on the ground. Lily nodded and skipped off to Oliver.
"How was your dinner?" Rose asked "have you just come to make small talk about the 3rd class meals? You must be real bored" Jack joked, but seeing Rose look upset, he apologised "sorry… I didn't mean to offend you" he smiled a little "oh don't worry" she forced a smile. "I could do with a cigarette, do you want to come?" He asked "I don't smoke" she replied "I didn't say you had to smoke" he replied "OK…" Rose answered "I'll just ask my friend to watch Lily" he said. Rose nodded and watched as Jack walked off, coming back a few minutes later.
"My friend has said he'll keep an eye on her. Let's go" he smiled.
