Chapter 1: The Breach

7 Bloomingtide. 9:40 Dragon | Hokage Tower Situation Room

(Neo) Shodaime Hokage Naruto, ANBU Commander Kakashi, Grand Enchanter Fiona, Templar General Alexis Lambert, and Warden-Commander Shelly Archer observed the tactical map Naruto made yesterday.

Fiona took a few deep breaths to calm herself. "Do we know what happened?"

Naruto shook his head. "Not truly, no. But we have good guesses."

Kakashi placed a small piece of rubble on the table. "Our spies returned with this." Kakashi looked at the stone with his sharingan. The stone in his hand was glowing. "And our researchers said that this stone was drenched in magic."

Naruto nodded. "What about the people? Did anyone survive?"

Kakashi nodded. "Evelyn Trevelyan. She's a runaway noble from the Free Marches. She's from Owstwick; her parents are Bann and Elie Trevelyan."

"Did she survive her injuries?"

"She did. Oddly enough, she has a weird mark on her left hand. However, she's unconscious and predicted to be for a while."

Alexis Lambert narrowed his eyes. "Have we been approached for information or resources? It's happened before."

Fiona nodded. "They believe her to be a "dangerous criminal."" Fiona showed everyone the request form. "It's an interrogation, bodyguard, escort mission. The form says the girl is still out."

Kakashi examined the mission request form. "It's from Chancellor Rodrick? He is representing the Chantry?"

Alexis nodded. "He's a bureaucrat who thinks he has real authority. No Templar I've ever met from the Chantry likes him."

Naruto nodded. "Didn't we try to kill him once?

"Not officially. Rodrick might not know it was us."

Kakashi presented his opinion. "I think we should take this. Naruto and I, plus two others, will personally attend."

Fiona nodded. "What methods will you use?"

"Nothing physically painful. If the Trevelyan is guilty, we need her to crack, not break. If she does, we'll have to explain why we have a breathing corpse. The rest of Thedas will want to hear her scream "mercy," not "thank you." She'll be fine."

"We can only hope."

Four days later, Haven

Team Ro consisted of Fox (Naruto), Wolf (Kakashi), Dog (Prosper Gallagher), and Cat (Rose-Marie Travere.) The trip to Haven was a nightmare. The weather sucked, bandits and refugees were everywhere, and the Frostbacks were crawling with demons. Team Ro lost count of how many monsters they killed just to get to the front gates.

Chancellor Rrodrick greeted the ANBU at the front gates. "Thank you for answering the Chantry's request. We understand your specialization is making people talk."

Naruto shook his head. "It's not our specialty, but we can make it work. Where is she?"

"Cell Number 1. For a crime this heinous, she gets special treatment."

Naruto nodded. "I see. Thank you. Is anyone in there now?"

"Seeker Pentraghast and Sister Nightengale."

Naruto swore under his breath. 'If we don't hurry, the Seeker might kill her before we get a chance to talk to her. And Nightengale is a pro. She'll make Evelyn say anything to make the pain stop.'

Team Ro rushed into the prison. When they opened Elelyn's cell, they found Seeker Cassandra trying to strangle their prisoner. Naruto held a kunai to Cassandra's neck. "Remove your hands from the prisoner, slowly."

Cassandra knew that voice–that cold, ruthless voice that promised pain and death. Though shaking with rage, Cassandra slowly removed her hands from Evelyn's neck.

Naruto lifted Cassandra back to her feet. "Leave. You and Sister Nightengale."

Both powerful females quickly exited the cell when Kakashi offered to "escort" them out. Naruto saw Evelyn retreat to the back left corner of her cell. Her arms had dried blood on them. 'Shit. They must have tortured her before we got here.'

Naruto showed his hands and slowly moved them to his food pouch. He gave a ration bar to the prisoner. 'You catch more flies with honey.' "Here, take it. It'll taste like boiled dragon shit mixed with bogfisher poo, then sundried in the Western Approach, but it's good for you." Naruto's voice did not carry the same weight as it did before. It was soft and caring–reassuring, almost.

Evelyn slowly ate the ration bar. She agreed with the man in the Fox mask. It did taste like boiled dragon shit mixed with bogfisher poo, then sundried in the Western Approach. However, it provided the nutrients she lacked from not eating for three days. She drank the water Fox offered her. "I'm sorry about the Seeker. Her skull makes more decisions than her brain."

Evelyn nodded. "Th-thank you." Her voice was horse and scratchy—no doubt from screaming and being choked.

Naruto gently shushed her. "We'll talk later. Rest, and eat what we give you." Naruto gave Evelyn his roll-up pad and sleeping bag that he carried in a storage scroll. "I'll be back."

Kakashi slowly closed the door after Naruto left the cell. He didn't want Naruto to slam it. "Learn anything?"

Team Ro could feel Naruto's glare through his mask. "Yes. Whoever tried to interrogate her was a sadist and/or thug. It'll be a while before we get anything useful from her."

Dog shrugged. "Maybe. They say that silence can be louder than any voice."

Kakashi nodded. "In that case, this woman is innocent." He turned to Naruto. "Fox, you're the boss."

Naruto contemplated his options. "I'll tell Rodrick the truth. If he refuses to accept it, I'll make him."

Ten minutes later, Haven's Chantry, War Room

Rodrick was eager to hear what the ANBU found. "Did you come to the same conclusion we did?"

Naruto's cold tone surprised the Chantry members in the room. "The opposite. Whoever got to her first used physical pain as an interrogation method. Clearly, this person doesn't know that people will say anything to make the pain stop. If the prisoner believes that lying will make it stop, then she'll lie. After all, it's not like you believed her when you told the truth."

Kakashi flashed his sharingan and the Grand Chancellor. "If not for your Chantry thugs, we would have more useful information. Instead, we'll have to undo the damage you idiots caused. That could take days or weeks."

The newly highest-ranking Chantry member glared at Kakashi. "We don't have days or weeks. We have hours."

"Then pay for reinforcements. We are more than happy to have two squads defend the valley."

Chancellor Rodrick paled. "You would bankrupt us."

"Bankrupt the Chantry…or bankrupt its members?"

"How dare you accuse us of corruption?!"

Naruto stepped between them. "This conversation is over. We will do what we want, how we want, and when we want."

IatA

Team Ro returned to Evelyn's cell. Naruto once again did most of the talking. He brought some hot tea with him. It would help calm her throat. "Here, drink up. It's hot tea."

Evelyn drank the tea. 'These people are so nice to me.' To most, a person with no identity is scary. But that was the ANBU's primary goal. Their main intimidation tactic was their anonymity. They have no face, no name, and no past. It makes it really difficult for enemies to take advantage of their families. But to her, they were Andraste's wrath, given human form. Regardless, her mortal curiosity got the better of her. "Why are you doing this?"

Naruto sat down in front of her. "I'll be blunt. We still need to find out what you know. But it's hard to do that when your prisoner is a corpse with a pulse. Wolf and I just ripped Chancellor Rodrick a new asshole for allowing someone to torture you."

Evelyn suddenly gasped. Her whole body felt like it was on fire. She rolled around on the ground while screaming bloody murder. The mark on her hand was glowing brighter than normal.

Naruto swore. 'Shit! I hope this works.' Naruto slapped a chakra-suppressing tag on her forehead. The mark caused her strange mark to dim significantly. Unfortunately, she wouldn't move much for at least ten minutes.

Kakashi observed all this. 'This new information. If this mark is killing her, then we really are on the clock.' He turned to Naruto. "Fox…I think it's time we started asking questions."

Naruto nodded. "It is. I hoped to give her more time to recover." Kakashi helped her sit upright. Naruto started asking questions. "That mark on your left hand must be killing you. That means we'll have to cut to the chase. What happened, and what could have caused this?"

Evelyn's voice was slightly hoarse from screaming. "I-I don't kn-know. Out of control magic?"

Naruto nodded. 'Dead end.' "What's the last thing you remember?"

The prisoner's voice was less hoarse. "I remember running. Things were chasing me. Then, a woman reached out to me."

The Neo Shodaime nodded. "I see. Can you describe your surroundings during your time?"

The prisoner nodded. "A lot of dark green. And the rocks were floating. There was also a staircase. That's when those things started chasing me."

"Can you describe those things?"

"I think they were spiders or something like it."

Naruto sighed. 'Now for the difficult questions.' "What happened when you woke up the first time? Who did you talk to, and who tortured you?"

Evelyn's eyes dimmed a bit, and her face paled. "It-it was S-Seeker C-Cassandra and Lady Nightengale. But neither of them hurt me."

Naruto narrowed his eyes behind his mask. 'Interesting. She's not lying. Was her torture not sanctioned by the Chantry? If so, they could be executed. "What did they ask you?"

"The same questions you did."

"What did your torturer look like? If you can tell us what he looked like, we can make him disappear."

The way he said 'disappear' sent shivers down her spine. She couldn't remember who tortured her, but Evelyn took comfort in knowing that if or when she did, the person would be face down in the dirt. "I don't remember…I'm sorry."

Naruto shrugged. "Your brain is likely trying to repress the experience. Your brain may suppress it completely until it feels ready to handle it. How old are you?"

Evelyn answered. "25."

"Memory repression above seven years old is rare but not unheard of. Those cases are extremely hard to deal with.

"I'm sorry."

Naruto shrugged. "It is what it is. However, we have good news. We can begin finding ways to seal the Breach and the rifts that opened in the Breach's wake." Naruto said his temporary goodbyes and left the cell.

Ten minutes later, secluded area, Haven

Naruto relayed what Evelyn said to his team. Cat, their mage and specialist in multiple fields of study, had something to say about it. "Whatever happened wasn't her fault. Do we know where she came from?"

Kakashi shook his head. "No, we don't."

Naruto issued new orders. "Poke around Haven. See what you can find."

Two hours later

Team Ro had a difficult time believing what they were told. Evelyn stepped out of a Fade Rift?! That meant she was physically in the Fade. The consequences of word getting out that someone without magic did what mages have been trying for centuries would be unacceptably high. The last time humanity did that, they created darkspawn and started the Blights. Cat emphasized this greatly. "This information does not leave this tent and the war room."

Naruto nodded. "Agreed." A thought occurred to Naruto. 'I remember someone saying the Rift vanished when the Trevelyan fell out of the Fade. Can her mark seal the Rift? Or the Breach itself?' "Apparently, the Rift that Trevelyan fell out of disappeared just after she hit the ground. If her mark can seal rifts, then she's not a prisoner. She's a VIP–and a target for those responsible for this mess."

Kakashi contemplated this new information. "She is in no position to take up a sword. Even with us protecting her, we can't guarantee her safety until we reach the Breach."

Dog sighed. "I don't think we have a choice. However, she is better than eight hours ago. Two days is the best we can do."

"Reasonable enough. We'll have to use ANBU healing methods."

"That's fine. As long as she can swing a sword."

Two days later, Haven, Fortified Front Gates.

Evelyn was rendered speechless by the Breach. A massive, floating hole in the sky. "What on Thedas could have caused this?"

Cat answered. "We don't know. All we know is that the Conclave exploded and leveled the mountaintop it was on. We have theories. It could be Rift/Soul Magic. Or it could be a forbidden blood magic ritual. We also believe that there was little to no fire magic. It doesn't have the "cutting power" to rip a hole in the sky."

Evelyn nodded her head. 'I have no idea what he just said.'

"Follow us. We will protect you."

Team Ro reluctantly convinced Cassandra to join them in the valley. Cassandra was reluctant to accept their proof of innocence but eventually relented. She also relentlessly denied her involvement in Evelyn's torture. The ANBU felt no deceit from the former Seeker. Her story had no holes in it. Cassandra's last encounter with the prisoner was a fit of rage, not uncivilized torture.

Naruto tried to help calm Evelyn's nerves. "We're right here with you."

The runaway Ostwick noble nodded.

Ten minutes later

Evelyn was thankful she didn't have to do much fighting. The ANBU made quick work of the demons. Of course, they had yet to face more than three at a time. She was also thankful for the gear the ANBU gave her. It kept her warm and cozy. Evelyn had a few questions. "How did I survive the blast?"

Cassandra answered. "They said you stepped out of a Rift, then fell unconscious. They say a woman was in the Rift behind you. No one knows who she was."

Evelyn felt her mark flare up, but it wasn't as bad as before. "My…hand…"

Naruto examined Evelyn's left hand. "The magic suppression seal is mostly doing its job. Removing it is a bad idea." Naruto helped Evelyn to her feet. "Are you ready to move?"

Evelyn nodded. "I am."

Their journey was meant to be short. There was a bridge that offered a shortcut to the nearest Rift. Unfortunately, a meteorite from the Fade destroyed the Bridge, and they were still on it. The ANBU used their training to catch Cassandra and Evelyn without injuring themselves. When the meteorite hit the ground, seven Greater Shades spawned. Naruto swore. Shrapnel tags weren't an option. The world could not afford a fragment of red-hot metal hitting Evelyn. However, the Wind Style: Rassengan was perfect. Its cutting power and mele' format meant that he could move as fast as he could without hurting anyone. Kakashi wasn't idle either. His Chidori killed three of the seven Greater Shades. Not only does the Chidori have near-unrivaled piercing power, but it's also a high-amperage jutsu. If the lighting-enhanced fist through the chest didn't kill you, the 40,000 volts at 5,000 amps would.

Meanwhile, Cat, Dog, and Cassandra guarded Evelyn. While none of the Greater Shades made it past the legendary ANBU, they weren't dumb enough to take that chance.

The next few minutes were relatively peaceful. A wraith got too cocky and took a kunai to the "brain." A few more minutes later, they heard fighting. Evelyn addressed the elephant in the room. "Who's fighting?"

Cassandra answered. "Chantry soldiers and a few others. We must help them."

When Team Ro + 2 noticed that the Chantry forces were backed into a corner by four Greater Terrors and one Despair Demon. Naruto through an explosive tag at the heart of the horde. The explosion vaporized three Greater Shades and blasted back the other two demons.

The Rift cracked and popped. Cat grabbed Evelyn's hand and pointed it at the Rift. "Quickly, before more come through!"

A spinning green double helix connected Evelyn's hand to the Rift. The Fade Rift crackled and popped, then dissipated with a loud CRACK. Evelyn gathered her witts. "What did you do?"

Fox/Naruto looked at where the Rift and Evelyn's hand used to be. "Cat did nothing. The credit is yours. We believe the mark on your hand on the Breach is related. And if it can open rifts, then it can close them."

Cassandra looked hopeful. "Meaning it could also close the Breach itself."

Naruto shrugged. "Most likely. However, there's a chance she'll turn herself and us into a paste."

The dwarf in the group snorted. "Good to know. And here I thought we'd be ass-deep in demons forever."

Naruto/Fox turned his attention to Varric. "And you are?"

The dwarf smirked. "Varric Tethras; Rogue, storyteller, and occasionally, unwelcome tagalong." Varric winked at Cassandra, who groaned.

Evelyn stuck close to Naruto/Fox. "What not?"

Cassandra stepped forward. "Now, we go to meet Liliana."

Varric snorted. "What a great idea! Just one problem–do the demons in the valley mean anything to you?"

Cassandra glared at Varric. "Your help is appreciated, Varric but–"

Kakashi stopped the ensuing argument. "The Chantry lost control of the valley days ago. Let him join."

The elf, Solas, narrowed his eyes. 'ANBU? What are they doing here?' Regardless of Solas's suspicions, he introduced himself. "My name is Solas, if there are to be introductions. I am pleased to see our prisoner still lives."

Naruto nodded. "Pleasure to meet you, Solas. And thank you for helping our new friend keep a reasonably steady pulse." Naruto turned to Cassandra. "Seeker, lead us to Sister Nightengale."

Meanwhile, Evelyn kept close to Naruto/Fox–not trusting these new people yet. Solas noticed this. "Is something wrong?"

Kakashi/Wolf stepped in front of Naruto/Fox and Ms. Trevelyan. "Someone got to her before us. We don't know what happened, but it wasn't pretty. Technically, she shouldn't be here, but she is because she can seal rifts."

Solas nodded, his opinion of the ANBU improving.

Cassandra sighed. "Then we must get to the forward camp quickly."

Varric sighed. "Well...Bianca's excited."

Four hours later, Forward Camp

There were six Fade Rifts and a small army of demons between them and the Chantry Foward Camp. The near-constant combat almost overwhelmed Ms. Trevelyan's already fragile mental health. Kakashi/Wolf kept Evelyn from breaking down. At least no one got hurt.

Naruto/Fox sighed disapointedly. "And there goes another nice uniform. The armor's fine, but demon blood stains permanently."

Kakashi did the same. "And that's why ANBU uniforms, even ours, are a copper-o'-dozen." The Copy Ninja/Mage brought everyone back to reality. "Where is Sister Nightengale?"

Cassandra sighed. "Likely dealing with Chancelor Rodrick. He'll fight us tooth and nail on anything we try to do."

Cat snorted. "I wouldn't worry. I'm sure we can convince him to see the error of his ways."

Those not in ANBU shivered.

Cassandra cleared her throat. "Follow me." The ANBU + three followed Cassandra to Chancellor Rodrick's table.

Chancellor Rodrick glared at them. "Ah, here they come."

Chancellor Rodrick cut off Sister Nightengale/Liliana before she could introduce everyone. "I know who they are. And as Grand Chancellor of the Chantry and the man who hired you people, I order you to take this criminal to Val Royeaux to face execution."

Naruto's Fox mask seemed to glow darkly. "I don't think you understand the position you are in right now. Ms. Trevelyan is the only one alive who can seal rifts, and after we close the Breach, we will have her seal the rifts in our territory. And we will gladly compensate her for her time and personal risk." Naruto/Fox stayed ahead of Evelyn. "Terminate the mission if you must. The Village will pay the remaining fee."

Chancellor Rodrick hesitated. It would save a lot of money. However, he runs the risk of the ANBU up and leaving. "Fine!"

Liliana nodded. "We're short on time, so we should take the mountain path while our soldiers charge as a distraction."

Cassandra immediately disagreed. "We lost contact with an entire squad on that path. It's too risky. We should launch an all-out attack on the Temple."

Evelyn's hand chose that moment to flare up. Cat caught her before she could fall over. "Easy, girl."

Cassandra turned to to Naruto. "How should we proceed?"

Naruto looked at the map on the table. "The mountain path is a lost cause until the Breach is closed. Place a squad near the entrance–nothing gets in or out. And we don't need that many soldiers to launch a successful attack on the Breach. Two teams will be enough."

Cassandra didn't 100% believe that last part. "Are you sure two teams are adequate?"

Naruto/Fox nodded. "I am. They will provide strength in numbers. Yes, some of them will die, but we can limit casualties by keeping our numbers as low as we can."

Cassandra agreed. Fox's solution was the best of both worlds. They could still take the quickest route and be reasonably safe. Reasonably.

Chancellor Rodrick sent one last glare at them. "On your heads be the consequences."

Two hours later, the Temple of Sacred Ashes

The first thing the group noticed about the Temple of Sacred Ashes was the amount of Red Lyrium. The ANBU made doubly sure to keep the Trevelyan heiress between it and her at all times. Naruto/Fox glanced at Cat. "Cat, remind me what Red Lyrium is."

Cat nodded. "Red Lyrium is normal lyrium that's been corrupted. Red lyrium crystalizes differently than normal lyrium and is far more dangerous and harmful than normal lyrium. What I don't know is why there's red lyrium here in the first place–because that implies that there is–or was–lyrium here before."

Varric glared at the evil red crystals. "It's vile. Don't touch it."

The party got a good look at the Breach. Varric whistled. "The Breach is a loooooooong way up."

Solas shook his head. "No. This Rift pulls the demons and other horrors from the sky."

Kakashi looked at the Rift with his sharingan. "Solas is right. This is the Rift we're looking for. And it seems to be closed now–at least for now. We'll have to reopen it, then seal it."

Liliana arrived with another squad of soldiers. "You're here! Thank the Maker."

Suddenly, the Rift crackled and popped. Everyone was blinded by light.

Start fade vision

Evelyn ran headfirst into the ritual room. "What are you doing?!"

The Divine, who was suspended by red energy circles, yelled back. "Run while you can…warn them!"

A tall, skeletal figure turned around to face Evelyn. "We have an intruder. Kill her, now."

White light blinded everyone again.

End fade vision

Cassandra stormed toward Evelyn. "You were there! Who attacked?! And is the Divine…" Cassandra couldn't finish that sentence yet.

Liliana put her hand on Cassandra's shoulder. "We'll deal with that later. Have your archers take positions around the Rift. We need to reopen it before the prisoner can seal it." The soldiers followed orders.

Meanwhile, Naruto/Fox was giving the ANBU their orders. "Cat, Dog!"

They soluted. "Sir!"

"Remove Ms. Trevelyan from the area the moment the Rift opens, and bring her back the second we're ready to close it. Wolf and I will kill the demons and buy you time and space." Said Fox.

Cat and Dog soluted again. "Understood."

Naruto pulled Evelyn aside to give her words of encouragement. "You'll get through this. I promise."

Evelyn shook her head. "You don't know that."

Naruto made sure no one was around and took off his mask. "Yes, I do. Your bodyguards are not ordinary ANBU. I am the Shodaime Hokage of Fire Country. Wolf is the ANBU commander. Cat is famous for her wind magic. She'll cut the demons to shreds before they know what happened. And Dog specialized in armed combat. The list of people better at it than him is very short–less than ten. Have faith–in us and yourself." Naruto saw Evelyn's confidence increase, but she needed one more push. "Is this your first serious fight?" Evelyn nodded. "Understandable, but you have nothing to be afraid of." Naruto smiled. "Do you want to hear about my first combat experience?"

Evelyn nodded. "What was it like?"

Naruto snorted. "Would you believe me if I said I froze?"

Evelyn was shocked. "You…froze?"

Naruto sighed wistfully. "Yep. It was against two losers named Gozu and Meizu–worthless nobodies who only survived by some miracle. My teacher, Wolf, had to save me." Naruto/Fox got to the point. "The point is, it happens to everyone. And we'll protect you if or when it happens."

Evelyn felt more confident. "Thank you." She took a deep breath. "I can do this."

Naruto smiled. "Yes, you can. And please keep my identity a secret. We wear these masks for a reason."

The Trevelyan girl nodded.

Naruto/Fox put his mask back on. "Front and center, Evelyn. Open the Rift."

Evelyn slowly extended her right arm towards the Breach. A double-helix chain connected with the Rift until it opened. A pride demon was the first to come out. Cat and Dog removed Evelyn from the area.

Naruto swore. "Of all the demons, it had to be that one. The lightning element isn't worth much."

Kakashi/Wolf shrugged. "Then it's a good thing I'm not a one-trick-pony." Kakashi activated his sharingan and performed the hand signs for a wind jutsu. "Wind Style: Wind Bullets!"

The demon's "armor" absorbed the wind bullets. Kakashi dodged the lightning ball sent his way. The Copy Ninja/Mage narrowed his eyes. 'Something is protecting it from all sides. Is it the Rift? Only one way to find out.' The Son of the White Fang's body flickered to Cat and Dog. "The demon has a shield, and I believe it's connected to the Rift. If this doesn't work, we'll have to try something else."

Evelyn took several calming breaths and nodded. "I'll do it."

Kakashi smiled underneath his mask. "Thank you. Fox will distract it. Ready?" Evelyn nodded. Kakashi picked her up. "Hang on tight."

Naruto saw what Kakashi was doing. Naruto called out to the demon. "Hey, dickfuck!" The demon gave Naruto its full attention. "That's right, shitbag, come and get it!" Naruto expertly dodged the monster's attacks while Evelyn did her thing.

Evelyn extended her hand towards the Breach. 'Here goes nothing.' The spinning green double helix connected the Breach to her hand. After ten seconds, the Rift made a loud crack. It changed shape. The Rift was transparent and had no crystals. And the demon fell to its knees.

Cat and Dog removed Evelyn from the combat zone while Naruto and Kakashi put explosive tags on each side of the pride demon's neck. Naruto counted backward from five. "...Three, two, one…" The tags exploded. And the demon's dead went flying off. The Chantry soldiers killed the remaining monsters. Kakashi whistled. "Evelyn. Front and center."

Evelyn nodded–with more confidence this time. She extended her hand towards the Breach, and the same connection happened. But it sucked her energy much faster. "I can't do this much longer."

Naruto ripped off the sealing tag. The spinning green double helix doubled in width. The Breach blasted everyone back when Evelyn sealed it. Evelyn was too tired to get back up.

Kakashi analyzed Evelyn's mark with his sharingan. "Her mark stopped growing–and the Breach seems isn't spitting demons and horrors." 'However, the Breach isn't gone. Interesting.' Kakashi kneeled next to Evelyn. "You mostly did it." Kakashi gently lifted her onto his back. He walked over to Cassandra. "We'll take her back to Haven. We're fast enough to bypass the remaining demons."

Seeker Cassandra nodded. "Understood."

Three days later, Haven, small cabin

Evelyn slowly opened her eyes. "Where am I?"

Wolf stopped reading smut. "You're back in Haven–as a hero this time. I think a congratulation is in order. You are the first person to go from the most wanted criminal in Thedas to joining the armies of the faithful in one work week. Impressive." Wolf/Kakashi waited for Evelyn to sit up before speaking. "Some call you the Herald of Andraste–only the title of Most Holy eclipses that."

Evelyn waited a few moments for her headache to subside. "How long was I out?"

Kakashi/Wolf handed Evelyn three parchments. "Three days. These are the notes we took."

Evelyn set them down on the bed. "I'll read them later. What happens now?"

Kakashi smirked under his mask. "Now, you get to walk through a crowd of saluting Chantry soldiers and a small but significant fraction of Fire County's army."

Evelyn paled. "Can't you shunshine–"

"Shunshin." Kakashi corrected her.

"Whatever. Can't you just…do that and get me where I need to go?"

Kakashi shrugged. "Not without turning nearly all of Thedas against Fire Country. You'll do fine." Kakashi wasn't good at pep talks, but he'll make an attempt. "Let me put it this way. Do you think Captain Fox can walk around–with or without his mask–without people staring and whispering about him?" Evelyn shook her head. Kakashi stood up from his chair. "Can you walk?" Evelyn nodded. Kakashi opened the door for her. "Your followers await."

Evelyn couldn't decide if Wolf's presence was good or bad. Yes, it distracted some of them–mostly the ones who lost family or friends in the last Exalted March against Fire Country.

"That's the Copy Mage."

"What's he doing here?"

"But he helped the Herald seal the Breach."

"Look, that's the Herald of Andraste."

"It's our savior."

"That's her. That's the Herald of Andraste."

"I didn't know Lord Wolf was here."

Kakashi/Wolf gently pushed Evelyn along. "Don't worry about them. They worship you. That's why they don't want you near me."

Evelyn noticed the men and women in masks were kneeling, and those in uniforms were saluting differently. "Why are they kneeling?"

Kakashi/Wolf answered as they walked. "The ANBU are kneeling because it's the world they live in. They worship the light by fighting in the shadows. An ANBU pledges to never walk in the light, but always defend it. And those in uniform are, in order, genin, chunin, jonin, and a few elite jonin. They are the ones who represent Fire Country on the battlefield and diplomatically."

Evelyn observed them as she walked to the Chantry. "Why are they here?"

Kakashi shrugged. "Some are Andrasian. They wish to see the woman who saved them from destruction. Others want to know the woman who performed a miracle by sealing the Breach even though they don't believe in Andraste. And some wish to study your mark to find ways to use it." Kakashi made sure to keep those ones away from their charge.

Kakashi met up with his teammates at the War Room entrance. "Anything interesting?"

Fox shrugged. "Just Chancellor Rodrick throwing a fit and throwing the Chantry's weight around–what little it has left."

Kakashi raised one eyebrow under his ANBU mask. "He does know we still expect payment, right?" The mission didn't go as planned, but the objectives didn't change. We'll waive the fee for interrogation as a show of good faith."

Cat snorted. "I'd really like to know how Rodrick will pay for that. I know the Chantry can't afford that."

Dog opened the door. "Only one way to find out."

The first thing Chancellor Rodrick did when he saw Evelyn was glare at her. "Chain her! I want prepared to travel to the capitol for trial."

Fox/Naruto shook his head. "Chancellor Rodrick, the mission expired the moment she woke up. And in case you haven't noticed, Fire Country is in a position to decline almost any mission we want. Or better yet, can you, or the chantry, afford a kidnapping mission? We charge a minimum of 20,000 Gold plus expenses. How on Thedas do you plan to pay for that with Chantry funds?"

Cassandra nodded thankfully. She turned to the Templars. "Disregard that, and leave us." The Templars left.

Chancellor Rodrick glared at Cassandra. "You walk a dangerous line, Seeker."

Cassandra approached Chancellor Rodrick. "The Breach is stable, but it is still a threat. It cannot be ignored."

Chancellor Rodrick glared at Cassandra. "That is not for you to decide. The Chantry will guide her in sealing the Breach if she is innocent. If not, she will be executed."

Team Ro pointed their swords at Chancellor Rodrick's vital organs. Fox changed his tone of voice to a cold, uncaring one. "Ms. Trevlyan is far more important to this world than you are."

Chancellor Rodrick gulped. "If you kill me, the Chantry will collapse on itself."

Kakashi/Wofl shrugged. "So? There are Andastians who would kill to become loyal and devout members of the Chantry. We will rebuild the Chantry from the ground up if we must."

Cassandra raised her voice before things could get worse. "ENOUGH! Chancellor Rodrick! The Left and Right Hands of Divine Justinia declare the Inquisition reborn. We will close the Breach, find those responsible, and restore order–with or without your permission." Chancellor Rodrick stored out of the War Room like a two-year-old who didn't get his way.

Liliana couldn't take her eyes off the book on the table. "This is the Divine's directive: rebuild the Inquisition of old. But we aren't ready. We have no leader, no numbers, and no Chantry support."

Evelyn joined the conversation. "I'll help." She turned to the ANBU. "Thank you for helping me get through the past week."

Naruto/Fox nodded. "Of course." He turned to Cassandra. "If the Inquisition lacks funds, we may have a way to mitigate that. There are several fade rifts within Fire Country, and we need her to seal them. Naturally, we'll compensate you for your time and willingness to put your health at risk. And you'll get one squad of ANBU to aid you while in our territory. Does 1500 Gold per Rift sound okay?"

Cassandra was so surprised that she stumbled over her words. "Y-yes. That's perfect."

Fox smiled under his mask. "Excellent. We will begin when she is ready to leave. "

It's a good (enough) introduction chapter. Were the characters too OOC? Let me know by leaving a review.
