[Seattle: 6 Days Later]
Eric watched as Bella returned with Lukas, Jasper and Tris. Tris had a scowl on her face but otherwise looked physically fine. "Max is waiting." He said when Bella got close.
"Good, I have a few choice words to say." Tris said snippily.
Bella narrowed her eyes. "Eric, take her, lock her up."
"Are you fucking kidding me? I will destroy you." Tris spat towards Bella.
Eric grabbed Tris's arm and Tris tried to fight him but he was extremely strong. "Any particular reason why?"
"Oh, she failed this mission pretty bad. She's lost her mind and she's not suited for Dauntless. Dauntless will be better without her."
Eric nodded. "Alright." He said simply, knowing that he'll get more information later. He dragged Tris away, at first before just knocking her unconscious and carrying her off.
Bella blew out a breath. She looked at Jasper and Lukas. "She will tell Max everything and we can't have that. We tell him about Will being killed by a wolf and Chris was too. That's our story. Let me do all the talking and we should be fine." She said and Lukas and Jasper nodded their agreement before they followed Bella towards Max's office.
Max was sitting behind his desk when Bella walked into his office with Jasper and Lukas by her side. His dark eyes seemed surprised to see Bella. "You've returned."
"Yes sir. We lost Will and Chris along the way. Attacked by what we believe were wolves. We have images of the dead wolf that we managed to kill. We gathered other images for mapping and soil samples to be tested for radioactive material." Bella rattled off the report.
Max leaned back in the chair. "There are three of you here. Where's the other girl… Tris."
"I'm afraid she's gone mad." Bella said. "She got close to a radioactive puddle. None of us went in as close as she did. She's rattling off nonsense and believes she has seen Charles Swan, the Dauntless legend that died 6 years ago." She relayed.
Max frowned. "That poor girl. Okay. Leave her in medical, we'll have Denise deal with her then. Hopefully get her calmed down and see what we can do about leeching the radioactive material from her body. Great work Bella, as I knew you would. Dismissed for now." He said with a wave of his hand.
Bella bowed then turned and left with Jasper and Lukas behind her. They waited until they were back downstairs before she spoke. "Okay. Low profile. I have to go find Eric, figure out Tris." She said and then left Lukas and Jasper to go towards medical to find Eric.
Bella found Eric talking to Denise. They were keeping Tris sedated for now which was a good thing. Denise was secretly in love with Eric and honestly would do anything for him if he asked, so there were no questions asked about why Tris needed to be sedated, she just did it because Eric asked her too.
When Bella had Eric alone, she made sure they were because what she was about to tell him couldn't be overheard by anyone.
"What's going on? Are you okay, losing Will and Chris. I-"
"Will and Chris are alive." Bella said and blew out a breath. "There's not an easy way to say this. Charles is alive. I met him in Everett. It's northeast from here. About 50 miles." She said her blue-green eyes studying Eric.
Eric's face scrunched up, his brows dipping in with confusion. "He was killed, six years ago Bella."
"No, he only faked his death, with the help of your mom and Johanna. He made it out of the city. He found Everett. He is their leader now. Everyone there is either Divergent or family. They don't have faction systems. There is an entire hub Seattle isn't apart of because Jeanine and Max are starting wars."
Eric ran a hand over his hair. "He's alive… all this time and he didn't stop to think how any of this would affect his children." He was angry and rightfully so. He had lost his father and had come to terms with that fact, but now he was alive and that just upset the balance Eric had carefully created inside himself.
"Eric, he could have been killed otherwise. Jeanine and Max knew that he was Divergent. It was a matter of time before they killed him for real. He did what he had to survive and we can't fault him for that." Bella's voice was soft when she spoke. "Trust me I wanted to be angry at him… I wanted to hate him because he left me in Abnegation and you got to at least grow up somewhat with him. I didn't get that choice because that was taken away from me."
Eric sighed, closing his eyes. "You're right."
"There's more."
Eric looked at her frowning. "What?"
"Charles is married… a lovely woman, her name is Moira. She had two children when he married her. Samuel and Annalie. Sam is 20 and Annalie is 13." She paused. "But they also have two sons and a daughter. Silas, Sebastian and Scarlett. Silas is five, Sebastian is four and Scarlett is two. Moira is expecting twins… boy and girl." She explained.
Eric's mouth dropped open, a little shocked now. "He has an entire family…"
"They are amazing kids Eric."
"You've seen them?" Eric was appalled.
Bella nodded. "We stayed a night within the walls of Everett. They have technology we don't have." She said and unhooked a cylinder looking device and handed it to Eric. "This will help us in the war that is about to start with Jeanine."
"How do you know about the war?"
"Because Charles has eyes inside Seattle. They can see what's going on. And what's going on is, Jeanine is about to annihilate Abnegation because she wants all the power. Max is helping her. This… this cylinder will… it will reset Seattle."
"What do you mean reset?"
"It contains a gas. It will put everyone to sleep and they will wake up with new memories. It's non-violet and it's a must if we want to avoid the war with Jeanine."
Eric shook his head. "That means all of our memories are wiped. We… we can't do that. Not to these people."
"I told Charles that… that we're taking away from the people… the good ones and so he said that there will be a fight then. And if there is no other choice…."
"Only if there's no other choice… Bella, this can be dangerous."
"I know." Bella nodded. "Just knowing that Everett exists is dangerous Eric. The hub of other cities won't help Seattle because of Jeanine and Max. Once we neutralize them, then… then maybe we can flourish like they do. They don't have division… they have peace and it works. It all works without a faction. Charles told me about my grandfather… how he was Dauntless before and then he went on an expedition outside the wall and he came back insane. That's why he ended up factionless, but my grandmother fell in love with him and brought him to Abnegation."
Eric shook his head. "There have been no missions beyond the wall…"
"Max lied. So has Jeanine. We can't trust anything they say because they want to control Seattle. They don't want what's best for it. People like them are the reason why humanity suffered in the first place. We strike first before they do. Gather supporters, I know we have them here within the city. We take out Max and Jeanine and make Seattle safe… no one has to die anymore."
Eric agreed. No one had to die anymore. They could end this before it started and Bella was right. He hugged her tight, kissing the top of her head like an older brother would. "God, I hate this."
"I know." Bella said as she leaned into the strong arms of her older brother. The older brother she wished she had growing up. "I know, but we're in this together…."
Eric nodded and released her. "Let's get to work then."
[Two Weeks Later]
Max called Bella into his office. He had a chance to talk to Tris and get information. Tris sounded like a mad woman, raving about how everyone was Divergent. That Charles Swan was alive in a secret city North of Seattle. It was unsettling. He looked at all the data that Bella brought back and all of it supports what Bella told him about the radioactive pool that Tris got too close too. Something didn't feel right to him though. He shook his head and then looked up at Bella when she walked into his office.
"Sir." Bella said with a nod.
"I reviewed all the data from the expedition. Interviewed Tris, she's raving mad." Max said with little lilt in his voice.
Bella gave a nod. "My same thoughts sir."
Max stood and walked closer to her, studying her with his dark eyes. "Will's and Chris's names are going up on the memorial wall later today. Also we are going to start arresting people in Abnegation today. We're making a stand and taking back the city."
Bella nodded, unphased. She already knew that this was part of Max and Jeanine's plan in starting a war. "Of course. Any particular families that are our target?"
"The Priors. Marcus Eaton. Those are my main concern right now. They lead the council." Max said and paused. "Is it going to be an issue?"
"Not at all. Faction before blood Max. I gave my blood to be here and I am committed to Dauntless." Bella said with a nod.
Max studied her more and then reached a hand up and took her chin in his hand, lifting her chin up a little to look up at him. He searched her blue-green eyes for any sort of defiance, but she looked at him with full devotion. Tris was crazy. There was no way that Bella was Divergent. He would be able to see it. He would know if his best was Divergent. Satisfied with his inspection he released her chin. "Very well. Gather a team. We'll go into Abnegation tomorrow." He said.
Bella nodded her agreement. "Yes sir." She said and started to turn away but his hand caught her arm and he pulled her towards him abruptly and his mouth took hers. It was the only thing that shocked her from this encounter. She didn't make a move away from him, afraid that it would set him off or blow the careful cover she had made for herself. She felt like this was a test to her devotion to Max and his cause, so she let him assault her mouth. His tongue shoved into her mouth and she refrained from biting him and let him explore her mouth. His hands wound around her tightly, like a constrictor.
Max broke away from the kiss. "Turn around." He commanded.
Bella turned, not sure what he was doing, but she heard the clang of his belt unfastening. "Sir?"
"Give me a minute." Max said, his voice tight like he was holding himself back. He wanted to fuck her right now. He wanted to bend her over his desk and release. He denied himself pleasure for so long but seeing Bella stirred feelings inside him. "I need a moment." He breathed out as his hand ran over his semi-hard cock.
Bella swallowed but stayed as she was. "Should I leave you… to yourself?" She asked, hesitant.
"No. I want you to take your pants off." Max said. "And lock the door." He commanded now with more authority.
Bella closed her eyes, battling with herself a moment. "Sir, we have the memorial."
"I know, I'll be quick." Max said. "Bella, lock the door." He commanded with a more commanding tone.
Bella just nodded and walked towards the door and locked it, managing to send a quick message to Eric to save her and turned and looked at Max as he jerked his hand over his dick quickly. She tried to push it out of her head and hoped that Eric made it to the office in time to interrupt. "What if I did that for you?" She said, dropping her tone, making it more airy, huskier. She walked over to him, her hand stopping his hand. "Let me." She murmured, her blue green eyes staring into his as her hand stroked over his dick fast. He groaned a little, his eyes dilating. She build him up fast, but then backed off a little just to tease him and she did this purposely.
There was a knock at the door and Max cursed, pulling away from Bella and straightening himself in his pants and sitting down at his desk to hide the fact that he was rock hard and ready to burst. He nodded to Bella and she went to the door and unlocked it and opened it, seeing Eric there. Relief filled her eyes as she stepped aside to let him in. "What is it?" Max barked out.
"I need Bella to take watch over the recruits while I finish up for the memorial. I came to get the patches I need." Eric said.
Max grumbled and opened the drawer on his desk and grabbed the patches out. "Here." He handed them off to Eric. He was pissed off and it was noticeable. "Fine. Bella. Later." He grumbled and waved her and Eric out of the office.
Eric and Bella left and waited until they were down the stairs from the office before he turned to her and spoke. "What was the 911 about?" He asked her, his voice low.
"Well. If I hadn't messaged you 911, then I would be bent over Max's desk right now as he took what he wanted. I don't think he know's what the word no is and I think he was testing me to see how devoted I am to the cause."
"Are you fucking kidding me right now? He was going to just rape you?" Eric asked incredulously.
"He's suspicious Eric. Tris set him off. She told him everything that happened out there and the only thing that is working right now is that I'm a good actress." Bella said. "I was trying to stall him until you got there. I need to wash my hands."
Eric frowned. "Oh god. I don't want to hear this." He said and shook his head. "You didn't."
"Eric. Would you rather me have let him do what he wanted?"
"No."
"Okay. The memorial will be soon. And then I have to prep for storming Abnegation tomorrow and taking my Natalie and Andrew Prior and Marcus Eaton."
Eric shook his head. "What the fuck? Since when?"
"Since now. Max is going ahead with his plan. We need to figure this out soon. Because if I bring the Priors and Marcus Eaton, they will die here in Dauntless. Blood will be spilt and there is no going back from that. Because Eric, if it comes down to protecting Everett… and our secret… I won't have a choice." Her blue-green eyes were solemn. She didn't want to kill the parents that raised her. She didn't want to take a life without cause, but right now, there weren't a lot of choices because they weren't nearly ready to withstand the onslaught of a war with Jeanine or Max.
Eric studied his sister. He saw the bleak expression she gave him. He knew that she wouldn't have a choice. Neither would he and neither would any of the Dauntless that were ordered to do something. Max was their leader and defying him would put a target on any of their backs and that couldn't happen. Not just for the sake of Divergents everywhere, but for the sake of the city. A war would devastate Seattle. That wasn't an exaggeration. He nodded. "Okay. We will figure it out. I'll get to the bottom of whatever it is Max and Jeanine are planning. I think I know how." He said and then he stepped forward and kissed her forehead before leaving her there to go to Erudite.
