Because of what happened in that office, both Enid and Ellie had been punished with cleaning the shot up army Humvees that had blood on it. They were each given a bucket with water along with sponges.
"You still mad at me, El?" Enid asked as they cleaned the trucks. Ellie scrubbed the hood of the other truck, not saying a word. "I'll take that as a yes," Enid sighed.
"What were you expecting, Enid?" Ellie asked, turning to face her. "I was expecting that I would get us outta trouble instead of getting us into it. Just like old times, huh?" Enid replied, partly joking.
That made Ellie crack a grin, which Enid noticed. "Oh, what is that I see? I knew I'd get you to smile one way or the other," she said as she pushed Ellie playfully.
"Only because your joke was cheesy," Ellie replied with an eye roll. "Joke? I'm insulted," Enid laughed, pretending to be offended.
"Such a dick," Ellie said, starting to laugh a bit. "Oh, woe is me. I'm like all the soldiers in this city," Enid laughed at the soldiers' expense.
"And everywhere all the soldiers cried all over the city," Ellie sarcastically said. The duo laughed together, finding this amusing. Enid walked around the humvee to clean the other side, but her shoe caught a slippery spot on the concrete, making her fall down with a shocked yelp.
Ellie came around the side and saw Enid sitting on the ground, rubbing her backside. "What happened?" she asked, kneeling down to help her up. "Fucking slipped. Busted my ass though," Enid replied. Before Enid got up, something caught her eye.
Although it was small, Enid felt a shiver run down n her spine just from the grizzly sight. "What is it?" Ellie asked, taking notice of Enid's reaction. "Look. There must've been a shoot out here," Enid said, pointing at what she was seeing.
Turns out, a single finger was lodged in the passenger side door with blood stained on it. It was covered in recent bullet holes. Ellie stared at the finger, feeling just as disturbed. For a brief moment, they could hear the gunfire then the screams from the Fireflies.
All of a sudden, they didn't want to be around there anymore. "Wanna get outta here?" Enid asked as she side-eyed Ellie. "Hell yeah," Ellie replied, helping Enid to her feet. They dumped out the water inside their buckets onto the concrete to make it look like they used it all.
(The Next Day)
The following afternoon, the two girls go to the mess hall to get some lunch. The entire room was packed with other students of the school.
Enid was upset to learn that she and Ellie didn't have the same dorm. But because of that, it wouldn't stop them from getting into trouble outside of the dorms.
When they walked inside, they overheard the other kids talking about what happened to the Fireflies; It got around like wildfire.
Neither wanted to focus on that and just spend the day together as if nothing had changed between them. Ellie had pulled out her walkman so her and Enid could listen to what music she had on there.
Enid was surprised to learn that Ellie had her favorite song, Take on Me by Aha still on
But their fun wouldn't end there after that.
(Later that Night)
At around 9 pm that night, Enid figured that it would be the perfect time to get Ellie out to explore the city, or even plan their escape out of the Boston QZ. Enid had snuck out of her dorm and made it passed some soldiers that were patrolling the area, looking around for any stragglers.
When she made it to Ellie's dorm, she knocked on the door to get her attention. "Ellie, I know you're in there," she said. From the inside of the room, Ellie heard the knocks on the door.
She took her earbuds out of her ears and grabbed her green coat that was hanging on her desk chair. After putting it on, she walked over to the door and opened. Enid was leaning against the doorway, smirking at her old friend.
"Sleeping in on me again, are you?" she asked with a grin. "I was not," Ellie replied with the same grin. "I know you, girl. Anyway, I didn't come down here for a chat. You wanna get the hell out of here?" Enid asked.
Ellie had no issue with that. "You wanna sneak out of this place like I do?" Ellie wondered. "Fuck yeah, I do. Now, no more layin' around. Let's go," Enid said, turning around to leave.
Ellie didn't hesitate to follow Enid out of the dorms and they started to climb a fence that would take them to the city.
"You gonna watch my back?" Enid asked as they climbed over the fence. "You know I do," Ellie replied, smiling again.
"Alright. Can you still keep up with me?" Enid asked. "Yep, shouldn't be a problem," Ellie replied.
Now this is where things take off between these two.
