Chapter 4- Fett's Family
"Daddy?" "Yes, Princess?" "Can I wand de sip?" Boba looked down to see Leia's little hand already reaching for the controlls. He gently but firmly grasped her hand and pulled it away from his controll panel, "No Princess, but if you're good and helpful during this mission, you might get to fly the ship for a bit after we leave Chandrila." Leia's eyes lit up as she put her hands on her knees in an effort to contain herself.
Boba dropped Leia off at Kait's junk shoppe while he went about his Guild business, and slipped Leia's birthday supplies into the cargo hold. When he returned to collect Leia Kait handed him a small parcel with a tag that read:
Happy birthday Leia.
Love,
Auntie Kait
Boba smiled as he tucked the package into a pouch that hung from his belt, "Thank you." Kait grinned at him, "I'm only giving you that now in case I can't be there on the little princess' actual birthday." Fett chuckled, to which Kait responded, "I'm serious Boba. I plan on joining you on Leia's birthday. I've only missed one, and I don't intend to miss a second." "Alright, alright. You do know that I don't have a lot of controll over where we'll be in a few weeks time. I can't guarantee that we'll be near Chandrila." "I know, but I still don't want to miss Leia's birthday."
Boba smiled, he knew that Leia had a wonderful 'honourary aunt' in Kait, "Speaking of Leia, where is she?" "She's taking a nap." Boba's eyes narrowed, Leia never willingly went down for a nap, so he was naturally suspicious of Kait's methods. "Don't worry Boba. I let her help out in the workshop, and she tired herself out, fell asleep in the speeder." "Uh huh." Kait raised her hands in surrender, "Don't believe me, fine. But she's in the back room if you want to go wake her up."
Boba walked into the back room of Kait's shoppe, which she used as her flat, to find Leia asleep on a plush sofa. He sat down on the sofa near Leia's feet, and gently shook her awake, "Leia, it's time to go home Princess." Leia stirred after a few moments, "Daddy?" "I'm here Princess. You must have been tired." Leia made a small "Mhmm." noise as she stretched her little arms above her head. "Come on Princess." Boba said as he picked Leia up and cradled her gently. Leia snuggled into his chest as he carried her back to her cabin aboard the Slave I.
The two weeks passed quickly, and soon Boba was preparing a rendezvous with Kait as a surprise for Leia's sixth birthday. Once the coordinates and time had been set, Boba was called into Leia's cabin because she wanted him to do her hair in a Nubian style, as he had told her that he'd take her to visit Theed on Naboo for her birthday. As he stood behind her attempting to plait her hair, Leia tried to help and give him pointers, but it didn't seem to help. "Di' you see de howo daddy? I' say dat de pawts 'af to be pewfectwy e'en." "I know Princess, but I can't seem to get this. It's plaits on top of plaits, and this isn't turning out very well. Can we do buns instead? Daddy can do buns, and plenty of girls on Naboo wear them, they'd go nicely with your new dress."
Leia scrunched up her nose as she thought, before nodding firmly, "O'ay daddy. Two bun soun good." Boba then carefully pulled Leia's thick brown hair into two large buns, one on either side of her head. When he was done Leia inspected her appearance in the mirror, before turning around on her chair and hugging Boba. "Tank you daddy." Boba smiled as he pulled Leia up onto his shoulders, "You're welcome, Princess. Happy birthday."
A few hours later Kait's small ship docked with the Slave I. When Leia saw who was coming through the airlock she squealed in excitement and ran up to hug her "Auntie Kait" around the knees. "Little Leia! I can't believe you're already six!" Kait squealed right back to Leia. "Aun'ie 'Ait! 'Oo you wike my dwess? Daddy say dat it pop- pop, daddy what de wor?" "Popular, Princess. It means lots of girls your age on Naboo wear something like it." "Yeah! Pouwa. Daddy say dat it popuwa on 'Aboo." Kait grinned as she and Boba watched Leia spin around so that Kait could see the full dress. It was an orange-yellow colour and adorned with little pink and purple flowers, as Leia spun the dress swirled around her in a cloud of colours, the flowy material puffing out wide on the air. "Yes, you look beautiful, Leia!"
Boba left Kait and Leia in the loading dock whilst he piloted the Slave I into Nubian space. Soon he was hailed, and answered the channell, "Space Traffic Controll, please state your business and cargo." "I'm here on holiday, the only cargo are passengers." "Very well, please proceed to Bay 6, an escort will meet you there." "Acknowledged." Boba piloted the ship into Naboo's atmosphere and finally landed in Bay 6. He shut the engines down and went down to the loading dock to open the doors and go out into Naboo's brilliant sunshine.
As the doors lowered Leia reached up and wrapped her tiny hand around his fingers, he smiled down at her reassuringly and she grinned back up at him. It was unusual for people to see his face, it was usually covered by his helmet as part of his Mandalorian armour and bounty hunting garb. But for his princess' special day he had wanted to blend in with the crowd, today he wasn't the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy and the son of Jango Fett, he was a dad taking the most special girl in the galaxy out for a birthday treat.
A small group of customs officers met them as they descended from the Slave I. A portly man with a shiny bald head and an incredibly bushy moustache approached, and in a high squeaky voice asked, "Purpose of visit?" Leia looked up at Boba and he smiled at the official, "A short holiday for my daughter's birthday." The man looked down at Leia, "I see, happy birthday miss." This caused Leia to break into a grin, her lopsided smile had a charming effect on everyone around her. "What will be the duration of your stay?" "Only a day trip. We'll be leaving by tonight." The man nodded while scribbling down the information on his notepad. "Names of all sentients partaking in this trip?" "Kait Malk, Boba Fett, and Leia Fett." The official did a double take at the last two names mentioned before attempting to pretend that Boba Fett was no big deal. "Right. Follow my assistant here to the main street, and when you return tell the desk your names and we'll get you back here. Would you like your ship refuelled while it's here?" "Yes, do I pay for that now or when I retrieve my ship?" "All payments can be made at the conclusion of your stay. Thank you sir, and welcome to Theed."
The attendant left them after they stepped out from the spaceport and onto the bright streets of Naboo's capitol city. Leia was nearly bouncing with excitement and Boba grasped her hand firmly in his to avoid losing her in the busy streets. Boba and Kait mostly followed Leia to wherever she wanted to go, with the amount of shopping that they did Boba knew that he was not going to be happy to see his balance when they were done, but one look at how deliriously happy Leia was made him think that it was worth it. He would re-earn the credits, and afterall, she only turned six once. By noon Leia was starting to slow, Boba could see that she was starting to get tired. "How about some lunch, Princess? There's a nice little café over there, and I think that Auntie Kait and I could use some lunch too." Leia nodded and Boba held her hand as they crossed the street to the little building called Queen's Café.
As the little family walked into the café a small bell tinkled marking their arrival, there were already several beings in the café but it wasn't crowded. The café seemed rightly named, each table was underneath a beautiful window which was a stained glass portrait of one of Naboo's queens. There were many portrayals of the young queens wearing their formal robes, traditional Nubian dress that they were famous throughout the galaxy for.
A girl with long brown hair similar to Leia's came up to them and said, "Hi, welcome to Queen's Café. My name's Ryoo Naberrie, take a seat anywhere you like and I'll be right with you." Boba looked around, and guided Kait and Leia to the table beneath a window that was unmistakably of Padmé Amidala.
As Leia sipped on a fruity drink and ate finger sandwiches Boba told her interesting facts about Queen Amidala. He couldn't tell her why Amidala was important to their little family, because he still feared that the jedi would attempt to take her if they found her, so for her own safety Leia couldn't know that the most influential woman in the galaxy's history was her mother.
After their busy day Leia was exhausted, Boba had to carry her back to the ship. Then Kait clapped her hands together very loudly, "So I guess little Leia's too sleepy for presents?" Leia lifted her head from Boba's shoulder and shook her head as Boba glared at Kait. "How about you open one from Auntie Kait tonight and the rest tomorrow?" Leia looked thoughtful before nodding as she yawned.
Boba set Leia down in the loading bay and left to get the present from Kait. When Leia unwrapped it she revealed a gorgeous set of paints and brushes, Boba smiled at Leia as she showed them to him, but glared at Kait's mischievous grin. "Maybe you and your dad can paint together, little Leia. I seem to remember he wanted to go into art as a profession when he was your age." "Kait…" "Daddy wanted 'oo be a awis'?" "I went through a bit of a phase. But now it's time for bed. I can see you yawning through your giggles, Princess."
After Leia had gone to bed Boba walked with Kait to where her ship was docked with his to see her off. "I'll see you both later. After you've had some time to forget about this." Kait was giggling like a little girl, and Boba rolled his eyes and sealed the airlock behind her.
