Random Voice 1
Amos Kane's boat came to a stop, but Amos Kane wasn't on it. He was on the dock, waiting. Khufu was behind his leg, hiding from Ayanna's glare.
That's why you don't rat people out, Khufu.
Ayanna smiled sweetly "Hi, Dad."
Amos shook his head. "You're lucky Khufu saw you take the boat. I was about to send a tracking shabti after you."
"I'm sorry."
"The House of Life is looking to kill us, Ayanna." His voice was quiet, the calm before the storm. "What were you thinking leaving the Nome alone? You better have a good excuse."
"I do!" Ayanna pointed back at the boat. "Walt is in the hut and he looks like he's about to pass out."
Amos closed his eyes and sighed. "You kids will be the end of me. Okay, let's get him to his room. Any injuries?"
"Don't think so."
"Good. The infirmary is working at its full capacity."
Ayanna's eye widened. "Wait, what?"
"It's why I was looking for you in the first place. Jaz's soul has left her body."
Up in the infirmary, it was dark. Jaz knew it was day, she could see the sunlight coming through the windows, but it was weird. As if there was something between the light and Jaz's surroundings, dimming it.
Jaz sat up and realized what was wrong. Her eyed widened.
"Am I dead?"
"No, child. But I am."
A beautiful woman came into view. Jaz could have confused her for Sadie, if Sadie's skin hadn't been a couple of shades darker. The woman was also clearly older, maybe in her 30s.
When she moved, the light behind her bent, forming tiny rainbows.
"Isis?" Jaz asked.
"Sometimes." The woman smiled. "No. But I am here with her help."
The woman sat on the edge of Jaz's bed. "My name is Ruby Kane."
"Carter and Sadie's mother."
"Yes. Remember the message you received a while back? The one that told you to make a statuette of my son?"
Jaz's eyes widened. "This was you?"
Ruby nodded. "It's time for you to learn why it was needed. It's time for you to guide Sadie, pass on to her one of my visions."
"Why me?"
A little mischievous spark danced in Ruby's eyes. "You are very important to my daughter, Jaz. More than you realize. It's your voice she needs to give her strength."
"I… She's really important to me, too..." Jaz cleared her throat, "How do you know all of this?"
Ruby smiled again and it was easy for Jaz to understand why Sadie spoke about her mother with such awe. Ruby Kane radiated warmth and safety.
"Even Death cannot keep a mother from looking over her children."
