First Day
- It is in this room where Michael Schmidt is hospitalized, Miss Vanessa... If you need my help just press the button to call the nurse who is near the stretcher.
Vanessa just nodded her head with a grimace of seriousness that was not entirely sincere.
When the nurse left Vanessa took her seat and remained silent for a few minutes with her head down, quickly the silence turned into slight moans coming from Vanessa's mouth, she would only cover her face with her wrists, after a while, Vanessa's moans turned into silent silences, because she didn't want to alert anyone around her.
- I'm an idiot... - Vanessa said removing her wrists from her face and trying to hold back the tears even though it was inevitable - I was afraid to tell you... - I was afraid that... he would hurt Abby and you..." she said raising her head and looking at Mike, who had been in a coma for a couple of days - "I was afraid that... he would hurt Abby and you...". - Vanessa wiped away her tears and continued - I thought that... maybe at some point you would quit and walk away from the place... But you didn't... You were so desperate to keep taking care of Abby that you agreed to stay there... You just wanted Abby to be happy... And because of me... - Vanessa felt the words stuck in her throat for a few seconds, but finally she just blurted it out - You almost died... I... I thought you weren't going to survive - Vanessa said and then let out a moan of pain, sadness and anguish - Forgive me Mike... Forgive me... Please forgive me... -
Vanessa kept sobbing and asking for forgiveness in a low voice for a few more seconds until she stopped, because she knew that asking for forgiveness at that moment would do no good.
Vanessa just kept sobbing quietly for a few minutes saying absolutely nothing, just letting the tears come out.
- Abby... She wants to see you... But I don't know if she's ready to see you in this situation so... Sad... These weeks have been very difficult, Abby keeps asking me about you... And I don't know what to answer, because the doctors don't even know when you're going to wake up...
Vanessa's radio began to emit a sound, it was an alert from her colleagues, this only made Vanessa angry, because it was a reminder that no matter how terrible the situation was, the world was still going on and it would never stop.
Vanessa got up from her seat, wiped the tears that were running down her cheeks for the last time and headed for the exit of the room while answering the message from her fellow officers. Before leaving Vanessa glanced at Mike, sighed heavily and walked out, leaving Mike alone.
