Arc 2 | A week at the manor
My eyelids flutter open and I catch a glimpse of a ceiling I've never seen before. It was still dark outside, but I was glad to have survived the loop.
Subaru - I should take a look around, is this Emilia's room?!
After a few seconds, he gets up and notices that his clothes still don't fit. He leaves his room and starts walking down the seemingly endless corridor.
Subaru - An infinite corridor? I should find out who's doing this to me, and my intuition tells me it's THIS DOOR!
He opened a door at random and saw a huge bookcase with a girl sitting on a chair in the center. She was the same height as him, so she must have been a resident of the manor. She was so engrossed in her book that it was as if she hadn't noticed him.
Subaru - Greetings young lady!
? - I'm probably older than you, I guess.
Subaru - Oh, it's true that I'm a child. What's your name?
Béatrice - My name is Béatrice, the great spirit of this library.
Subaru - I'm not much of a reader, except for manga, but I guess you don't have any.
Béatrice - Would you please stop bothering me? Otherwise I'll have to do it the hard way, I think.
He left the library as Beatrice had wanted, not wanting to make a bad impression as soon as he arrived in the manor. After several minutes looking for someone to help him, he collapses from exhaustion.
Subaru - I'm tired...too quickly...with this body. I don't even know where I am, I feel like this mansion is gigantic.
? - Hello, you must be Subaru? Do you need anything?
He turned around and saw a lovely soubrette, with sky-blue hair covering her right eye, big light-blue eyes and a soubrette outfit that fit her perfectly. Her gaze was a little creepy at one point.
Subaru - Hello, who are you?
Rem - Excuse me, I haven't introduced myself in a long time. I'm Rem, Roswaal's housekeeper.
Subaru - Nice to meet you Miss Rem, my name is Natsuki Subaru! Eternally ignorant and broke! By the way, do you know where Emilia is?
Rem - Emilia? She's probably still asleep. It's quite early, you'd better go back to your room.
Subaru - By the way, what are you doing?
Rem - I'm taking care of the manor house chores, then I should start preparing lunch.
Subaru - Can I help you? I won't be able to get back to sleep anyway, and this could be my good deed for the day!
Rem - I could use a little help, my sister should be joining us within the hour.
After several dozen minutes, Subaru quickly becomes exhausted helping Rem, but they strike up a bit of a friendship, even if Rem was a bit strange at first.
Subaru - You do this every day!? What a complicated job...
Rem - You should go and see Emilia, she's probably up by now.
Subaru - It was nice of you to help, see you later!
He went outside, thanks to Rem he knew the manor a little better than before. He spotted Emilia and Puck together, ran over to greet them and then chatted very little with them. He had the impression that Emilia wasn't used to talking to other people. Then did some exercises, but stopped in the middle, too exhausted to continue.
I should probably review my training program, being a kid is a bit of a hassle.
Subaru noticed that the servants, Rem and Ram, were approaching him to tell him that Master
Roswaal had returned to the manor. I returned to the manor without Emilia, who was only a kindly "big sister" in my eyes, and he would probably have fallen in love with her if he'd been taller.
Subaru - Oh, you've even got a buffoon, I'll never understand rich people...
Roswaal - I'm the master of this manor, Roswaal L. Mathers, pleased to meet you, my dear Natsuki Subaru.
After a few minutes, the table was ready and we took our places. Subaru hadn't noticed that Roswaal was looking at him a lot with confusion, and after a few kingdom-related discussions, he wanted to learn more about events in the capital.
Roswaal - I've heard that you helped Emilia a lot in the capital, can you tell me exactly what happened? I'd like to know more.
Subaru - I asked Reinhard to help me fight Elsa, and then I saved Emilia from death. Not much happened during the fight.
Roswaal - Nothing else before?
Subaru - Before that, I'd just been mugged by a few thieves and... that was it.
I shouldn't tell them I'm from another world, they might think I'm crazy and imprison me, especially with what I've learned in this discussion.
Roswaal - I see, you've saved Emilia so I'll grant you all your wishes, just ask!
Subaru - All my wishes? I'd like to make other friends my own age, if possible?
The master of the manor had had a puzzled look on his face when he'd announced that he just wanted to make other friends his own age.
Roswaal - Are you sure you don't want anything else?
Subaru - Can I learn magic?
He seemed even more puzzled, as if waiting for a particular desire. After a short silence, he resumed the discussion.
Roswaal - Yes, Rem will take you to the village in my territory, and for the magic, Beatrice will take care of you.
Beatrice - What?! You didn't even ask me if I was okay with it.
Roswaal - We'll have a little chat afterwards, my dear Beatrice~.
The meal ended quietly, and Subaru had no idea what Beatrice and Roswaal were going to discuss.
He didn't like the way she spoke, which was strange, and he seemed to want something in particular.
Subaru - Rem, when are we going to the village?
Rem - We'll go to the village when you and Beatrice are ready. The master also wanted to give you some money, so here's a little bag with a few coins.
Subaru - By the way, where am I going to live? In an inn?
Rem - There are no inns in the village, so you'll be staying with a local, and I'll take care of that for you.
At the same moment, the door opened and Beatrice stepped out. Her expression was different from before, she looked happy, which was very surprising.
Béatrice - When are we going?
Subaru - Now, unless you need to pick something up before you go?
Béatrice - I already have everything I need.
Subaru - You're only taking one book? That's surprising, coming from the great mind of the manor library!
She gave a cute little cry and we left the manor. I considered Beatrice a friend, even though she was going to be a lonely girl. I didn't think it would be good for her to be left alone.
When they reached the village of Arlam, Rem had asked Subaru to wait a few minutes until she found someone willing to take them in. After a few seconds, he spotted a group of children, took Beatrice by the hand and ran towards the group.
Subaru spotted a young girl about his own age. She had medium-length reddish-brown hair stretching to her shoulders, and cyan eyes. He was determined to find out more about her, and found her very cute and pretty. He headed straight for her to introduce himself and find out more about her.
Subaru - Pleased to meet you! I'm Natsuki Subaru, and this is Beatrice. We're new villagers. What's your name?
Petra - My name is Petra Leyte. I'm delighted to meet you, Subaru and Beatrice.
Subaru - It's a pleasure to meet you, Petra. Can you tell me more about the village and about yourself?
Petra - Of course! I'd be happy to help. Yesterday too, news arrived in the village.
Subaru - A new one yesterday? Isn't that common in your village?
Petra - We only have travelers who come, but it's quite rare, and newcomers who settle in the village are very rare.
Béatrice - Who's the new girl?
Petra - I don't really remember, but I think her name was "Meili" and she had a really cute dog!
Subaru, Beatrice and Petra continued their discussion and tour of the village. Rem had managed to find an inhabitant willing to welcome the two children. But back at the manor, Roswaal was worried about the future.
Roswaal - Events are too different, I don't see how we can restore the future...
