Shopping with snape and the grimm
Severus stood in front of his child's room door and was about to knock when,
"Good morning, Professor." The man quickly whirled around.
"Potter, where did you come from?"
Harry scrunched up his face.
"And you always say I have no manners. I was out with Blacky."
At first, Severus stared the boy down. Now he was reprimanding him for the second time. Had the lad gone to an etiquette school during this summer vacation or what? But then his brows drew together.
"You two went outside? Alone?"
"Um, yes. Blacky can't very well use my toilet."
"Let me put it another way. You would be alone outside in Diagon Alley? Even though I explicitly told you not to go anywhere without me?'
It slowly started to dawn on the young boy what it was that was upsetting his teacher so much.
"No, Professor, I wasn't in Diagon Alley. Tom has a big garden, that's where we are."
"Tom?"
"The owner of the cauldron."
"I know his name, but why do you call him by his first name?"
"Because he asked me to. He said everyone can call him that."
Severus nodded.
"Have you had breakfast yet?"
Harry shook his head.
"Then get ready. We're going downstairs and then after we'll be heading out."
"All right."
Harry went into his room, naturally followed by Severus and Blacky. Hm, maybe he should take some cookies for his teacher as a reward. The guy followed him just like the dog. He grinned softly at the picture. Professor Snape looking at him begging to get another one of Mrs. Weasley cookies or not, that was creepy.
He quickly picked up his things and turned around.
Severus had followed his student, a little surprised at the stupid grin he had on his face. But please, he would never understand these children. The teacher saw that Hedwig was back and the Weasleys' owl was gone.
The boy just turned around and walked towards his white fluff lint catcher.
"Have a pleasant flight, my beautiful?"
Severus shouldn't have been surprised, but he was when the bird nodded affirmatively. What kind of animal was it? It was smarter than most of his students.
"Oh, Morgan, help me."
"What's the matter now? Has Hagrid canceled on you?"
"No, he's taking Blacky. But he sent me cookies. Homemade ones. Would you like one?"
Harry held the box out to the man.
"No thanks, I've just got out of the habit of eating stones in the morning."
Harry let out a snort and put the box back down.
"Um, Professor, what are you doing?"
The man just had one of Harry's ties and his belt in his hand.
With his wand, he turned both into a collar and a leash.
"I certainly won't let your beast run free out there."
"But Blacky's a good boy, he won't run away."
As if to agree, the dog stood close to his master and rubbed his head against him.
"But nobody knows that. If you have him on a leash, people will be reassured."
Harry looked at the dog, then at himself and then at Severus. His look said it all.
"Don't look like that, I also realize that you could never hold the beast in an emergency. But those people out there are confident that you can."
"Because otherwise you'd be holding the leash?"
"Because you're Harry Potter."
"I was afraid you were going to say that."
Resigned, the boy took the collar and leash. He put both on Blacky. Surprisingly, he held still.
"You really are a good boy but now we're gonna have breakfast."
Severus shook his head. The boy talked to his animals as if they were people. And they reacted to it, too. It was a good thing no one else knew, otherwise it would be in the papers tomorrow.
The three of them went into the bar. They sat down at the table in the far end again and ordered.
Blacky wolfed down his food greedily. Severus stared at his student over his coffee cup.
"Why didn't you order anything to eat?"
There was only a cup of tea in front of Harry.
"I never eat in the morning."
"You do very well at Hogwarts. Don't look so puzzled, I always look around the hall. If only to know what the bloody twins are up to again."
Harry chuckled, but nodded understandingly.
"Hermione's worse than any mother sometimes. She's always forcing me to eat. Usually combined with a lecture on the importance of breakfast."
Ms. Know-it-all, of course.
"Ms. Be... Granger is right, though."
Harry had noticed what his teacher was actually trying to say. That was why he gave him an annoyed look. But the man didn't seem particularly bothered by it.
"But I don't want to be stared at the whole time while I'm eating."
"If you were eating, I wouldn't stare at you."
"I wasn't referring to you."
Severus raised an eyebrow and then looked around the room. The brat was right; apart from the innkeeper, everyone really was staring over at their table.
"Like vultures."
Scowling, Harry agreed and drank his tea.
Blacky stared at the guests in the room and then began to growl.
Some flinched back in shock.
Severus registered this sympathetically.
"Good dog. Maybe it's not so bad that he's here today after all."
The dog straightened up. He seemed really proud.
Impossible cattle.
A short time later they left the Dripping Cauldron and made their way to Diagon Alley. As soon as they had passed through the gate, they were gawked at. People kept whispering, pointing their fingers at them or making a gesture to ward off evil. They were probably referring to the supposed Grimm.
A short time later some young women approached the group. All four of them were in their twenties and giggling stupidly.
"Excuse me?"
"Yes?" Came a venomous voice from the potions master.
"Um, we're from Switzerland and here on vacation."
"Are you lost?"
Severus didn't understand the fuss. If the turkeys didn't know where they were, why didn't they just ask for directions? They didn't need to giggle like that.
But as soon as he had asked his question, the women started giggling like mad.
Severus was about to hiss at the four of them. When the speaker seemed to regain her composure.
"No sir, we're not lost. We'd just like to ask Mr. Potter for something."
Severus felt something on his cloak. When he turned around, he saw Potter trying to hide behind him.
Oh yes, not afraid of basilisks but of giggling females. Funny.
Blacky had set up on the other side of the boy. He looked at the women curiously.
"What would you like to ask Mr. Potter?"
Loud giggles again, almost turning into shrieks. This impossible behavior had attracted the attention of even more pass-byers. As a result, the boy really pushed against his back.
"Are you his manager?"
This question hit him like a slap in the face.
"Please what?"
"Are you Mr. Potter's manager? I mean, understandably so. As the hero of the wizarding world, the-boy-who-lives must have a lot of commitments and appointments."
Severus was about to turn that THING in front of him into something disgusting. Again, he felt something at his back.
When he turned around, he saw that the boy was hanging his head in resignation. Blacky licked him over the head again.
"SWEET!"
Severus almost flinched. Merlin, the four had screeching voices. In comparison, Parkinson was pure relaxation.
"I read it, but I couldn't believe it. It really shows how powerful Mr. Potter is. Unbelievable, who else could tame a Grimm?"
"Hades," came a whisper from the-boy-who-was-hiding.
Severus had to stifle a laugh. But he felt compelled to set the record straight.
"I have to disappoint you ladies. The animal is a completely normal dog. He's a bit bigger, but he's still a dog."
A dolled-up blonde grinned knowingly at him.
"We understand that you have to say that. Some people would probably be scared otherwise. But as long as he's near the hero, we don't mind."
Harry was starting to get a little too colorful. He was standing right next to these women. If they wanted something from him, why didn't they speak to him? Not that he would have wanted that either. But it was still better than this. He just wanted to get away. But that wasn't possible, the spokeswoman spoke up again.
"We don't want to keep you long. We'd just like to ask Mr. Potter for his autograph."
"Please!"
Harry jerked his head up involuntarily.
"An autograph, but why? I'm not a star."
"OHHHH, how modest. That's sooooo sweet. Please Mr. Potter, would you sign here. Preferably with a 'For Lola' underneath."
He looked at his teacher, looking for help, absolutely desperate.
He had an understanding look.
"Why do you want an autograph?"
"But isn't obvious, Mr. Potter saved us from you-know-who, He protected the Philosopher's Stone and won against a basilisk. That's sooo exciting. So please Mr. Manager, have the hero sign this for us."
That's exciting? She must have been kicked by a horse. Those fights were a lot of things but certainly not exciting or either something he wanted three times at mealtime.
"Well, first of all. I am NOT Mr. Potter's manager. I'm his teacher, or rather, I teach at Hogwarts and secondly I know why my student is famous. What I want to know is, what are you going to do with these autographs?"
The four of them looked at each other with a little uncertainty before the blonde answered.
"We want it for our collection. Just for us."
Severus sighed.
"Well then, give it to me."
Excitedly, the turkeys handed the man the autograph booklets.
Harry stared at his teacher in shock. He wasn't serious, was he? He saw that the bat cast a spell on the notebooks and then gave them to him.
"You really want me to?"
"Yes."
Unsure, he looked at the women.
"Um, your name is Lola?"
"Yes, that's right!" The young woman beamed at him as if she had just won a competition.
Harry quickly scribbled his signature and the desired dedication underneath. He did the same with the other books.
The four of them were beaming.
"Thank you very much Mr. Potter. You're just great."
Harry smiled back a little despondently.
"If I could ask you to let us through now. Mr. Potter has a lot to do today and we're pretty pressed for time as it is."
The girls nodded eagerly and then set off.
"I can't believe it, we really did meet Harry Potter. And he talked to us!"
The loud rapturous shrieks were the last thing Harry heard.
Severus rubbed his temples. What horror of women. When he looked at his student, he was staring at him angrily.
"What?"
"What was that about? Why did I have to sign autographs for those horrors? I'm not a celebrity."
Severus almost laughed out loud.
"But Potter, that's exactly what you are. Everyone knows that you defeated the Dark Lord. And thanks to Dumbledore, everyone knows about your other exploits."
"But what have I done? I'm alive. And? Many people do. But I'm praised to the skies for it. It was my mother who saved me. She deserves the credit and as for the other things,
That thing with the stone was pure stupidity, It was absolutely unnecessary for Ron, Hermione and me to try to 'save' it. Unfortunately, we found out a little too late.
An' I didn't fight that giant earthworm voluntarily either. For Morgana, Ron and I even went to Lockhart to ask him for help but he was just about to leave and we only went down there because Ginny was down there."
Harry had been talking himself into rage more and more. Severus had to use a spell to ensure their privacy. He quickly directed the boy to the animal healer.
What he learned from his student, however, was extremely interesting. Dumbledore hadn't told the boy anything about the traps that protected the stone. He said something else to the teachers at the time. He asked Lockhart for help. It seemed as if the boy would do anything NOT to put himself in danger.
Severus realized more and more now that he had really misjudged this child. James Potter would really only have seen all the dangers as adventures and the attention of such females would have been the greatest thing for him. Severus smiled. Even Lily liked a certain amount of attention. For this boy here, though, it seemed to be the worst thing possible.
Harry snapped the man out of his musings.
"So, why did I have to sign autographs? I would have expected you of all people to send those turkeys packing."
"If they had been English, I would have done the same. Not that they would have dared to come anywhere near us. After all, I've been a teacher long enough and have a certain reputation with a certain age group.
But these were foreigners. It wouldn't do too well to offend tourists.
It took England a long time to get out of war debt after the fall of the Dark Lord and the economy also took a long time to recover. Only in the last five years have tourists started to come into the country again and the numbers have skyrocketed since you started school."
Harry let out a very indelicate noise.
"Great, I'm a tourist magnet. Why don't you just put me on display at the zoo? Then more people will get something out of it. 'Our next attraction, Harry Potter. Occurrence, only in England. Live specimens, one. Feeds mainly on, blah blah blah'."
This time, Severus laughed really dryly. When it came to sarcasm, this boy was in no way inferior to him.
"Mr. Potter, it's not about those stupid chickens. I don't care how many tourists come to the country. But England still has a very bad reputation in other countries. It's considered backward and dangerous. The accusations are certainly true in some respects, the ministry here doesn't attach much importance to innovation."
"And that's why you allowed them to treat me like a star?"
"Mr. Potter, even if you don't like it. You are a star. And no, that wasn't the reason. Not the real reason."
"But?"
Blacky had also perked up his ears and looked at Severus with wide eyes.
"England imports a lot of things from abroad. Potion ingredients, animals, magical items. Even specialists like Aurors and healers often come from other countries. What do you think would happen if we were rude to them?"
Harry didn't have to think for long.
"If it's like the Muggles, then some countries would probably stop trading. But why is it important that I, of all people, behave so stupidly?"
Severus looked at the boy in surprise. He hadn't expected such a quick and accurate answer. Seems the boy wasn't as stupid as he thought.
"As you have noticed, you are very important to people and when someone like you misbehaves, it carries double the weight."
"Great, I'm not going out anymore. I don't want to be approached by someone all the time."
Still grumbling, the two of them reached the animal healer.
Severus had to try not to grin again and again, The whole time his student had been swearing to himself and he kept saying he was just Harry. Very refreshing. Quite different from his godson, who thought he was the center of the world. Much to Lucius' frustration.
He had definitely thrown overboard the belief that Potter would feel comfortable in his role as a celebrity. His fearful reaction when he met the women had been too strong for that. Severus resolved to make sure that he did not expose his protégé to such 'dangers' in future.
When the healer, an Italian, saw his patient, he almost had a fit. He was about to shout at Severus, but when he saw who the dog belonged to, he was overcome with kindness.
He praised the beautiful dog and how great he thought it was that Mr. Potter was taking care of the animal.
Severus could really see his student getting sick.
"So Mr. Potter, the diagnostic spell has revealed that your pet is relatively well. He's just a little malnourished and he has some parasites but we'll get to that in a moment."
The man picked out some potions and he immediately dripped the remedy for the ear mites into Blacky. You could see how the dog relaxed.
But then he faltered when it came to the worming treatment.
"Hm, what's the best way to give it to him now? The stuff tastes awful, judging by the animals' reaction. I can't imagine him taking it voluntarily."
The doctor scratched his head, embarrassed.
Harry simply took the paste from the man's hand.
"He has to swallow the whole thing?"
"Yes, but please be careful."
Harry smiled disarmingly at the healer.
"Blacky, it doesn't taste good now, but it helps. Then you'll put on weight again. So be a dear and open your mouth."
Severus had already stopped reacting, but the man next to him was completely gobsmacked when the dog complied.
The boy carefully gave him the paste.
"Swallow it now. It's best to do it quickly so it's not as nasty."
And again the animal did as instructed. It gagged and twisted its mouth but that was it. As a reward, his master gave him a cookie.
"Unbelievable, that's just fantastic. The boy should think about a career as an animal healer."
"Just don't give him any ideas. Otherwise he'll soon be dragging in even more critters."
After the visit to the healer, we went to the bank. Surprisingly, the boy relaxed in there.
"Not afraid of hysterical fans?"
"Not here. The goblins don't care who comes in here. As long as you behave yourself. They treat everyone the same.
Good afternoon, Mr. Girbs."
"Mr. Potter, what can I do for you?"
"I'd like to get some money from my dungeon."
"Good, follow me. The dog has to stay up here, though."
"Understandable, where can he wait?"
The goblin showed them. Then they went downstairs. Severus' eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw the contents of the dungeon and that was just the school fees. In other words, what the boy was entitled to until he was seventeen. But he shouldn't really be surprised. The Potters were an old family, and as an Auror you earned very well. What did surprise him, however, was how little money the boy took out.
Afterwards, they drove to his own dungeon and then they went back upstairs.
Blacky had been waiting for them.
There was even applause in the bookshop when Harry calmed one of the monster books. He had only done it because the thing had jumped at him.
In any case, the owner was thrilled because he now knew how to prevent any more books from being destroyed.
Once they had everything they needed for school, the green-eyed boy wanted to make his way back to the cauldron.
"Not so fast Mr. Potter. We'll still have to go to the menagerie. Blacky needs a decent harness. And then you should get some new school clothes made. Oh no, you should buy new clothes in general. The one you're running around in is at least three sizes too big for you."
"I agree with the first two points. Even if I haven't grown so much that I need a new uniform."
"Yes you do, you haven't grown much, but still enough. Besides, your uniforms are already very tattered. How long have you been wearing them?"
"Well, since first year."
"That means you've hardly grown at all since your first year?"
"Yes, I deliberately bought my uniform one size too big. But why should I buy new clothes?"
"You're not serious, are you? Have you taken a closer look at these rags? Most families wouldn't even let their house elves walk around in them. You've been wearing these pants since your first year."
"No, since I was ten. They were too small for my cousin. I know my clothes are old, but I can't spend my parents' money on something as ridiculous as fashion."
Severus was about to slap his forehead.
"Potter, haven't you seen how much is in your dungeon?"
"Yes, but that must be enough for my entire time at school. And after that, I'll need something to buy an apartment or something."
"Damn it Potter, the dungeon is only for your school years. When you're seventeen you'll have access to your entire fortune."
"I have more money?"
Severus stopped with a jerk. He grabbed the boy by the arms and spun him around to face him. When he heard the child's whimpering, he loosened his grip. Blacky growled angrily at him.
Jesus, that really wasn't smart. Severus had to control himself.
"Mr. Potter, of course you have more money. The whole wizarding world knows that the Potters have a very large fortune. Why do you think Draco Malfoy wanted to be friends with you?"
"Oh."
That was all Harry could say. But that really was news for once.
"But in the dungeon there's already so much."
Severus couldn't help but smile.
"It is, but only a drop of your total wealth. Now come on, let's buy you some decent clothes."
Harry let the rest of the shopping pass him by.
At first he had protested, but eventually he had stopped. His teacher had taken it upon himself to dress him again. The man was like a force of nature. So Harry simply switched off. He sat down and stroked Blacky. His only condition was that it couldn't be too expensive.
At last they were back in the Leaky Cauldron.
Severus was happy too. He had persuaded the boy to put on some of his new clothes straight away. The sales clerk had thrown away his old ones with a disgusted look on her face.
The trouble now was they were being stared at even more, they were stopped five times, the boy had to sign autographs twice. One of them wanted to introduce him to his daughter. Severus immediately sent him packing but when the guy then said he had a son as an alternative, Severus just looked at Blacky. He bared his teeth and the guy disappeared.
What the other two wanted was no better. But now they were finally in their rooms.
"I'll put the groceries away and then I'll throw myself on the bed and curse the world."
Severus lifted the corners of his mouth in amusement.
"But not for too long. It'll be time for lunch soon."
Severus almost burst into laughter at the astonished look on his face.
But he calmed the boy down.
"We'll eat in your room."
"My hero." Came quietly from the child before he closed the door behind him and the dog.
Laughing softly, Severus went into his room.
The little one was really refreshing. Let's see if he still considered him a hero when it came to learning.
