The first note of her Song was sorrow. The second was love. The third was compassion, born out of their unity.

Her Song strengthened, being threaded with care, pity, mercy, empathy, pain, grief, and under it all, joy. It joined with another whom was serious, stern, but above all wise and just. Their Songs sung together and their beings grew closer but notes were missing from their harmony.

She searched for what was missing across winding empty spaces and came across many other Songs, all vibrant and wonderful, and stayed to listen. Her Song and the Songs of others started to take shape in the form of colorful hues. Hers was gray tinged with lilac. She learned the colors of others, the one she harmonized with first was black swirled with pink. Later she came to sing often with a rose colored one and a lively green.

But no other Song was quite what she was looking for. All she knew is that what she sought would feel similar to the first one she harmonized with. After a while when she had just about grown weary of searching, she felt an overwhelming presence of love come upon her. Like her own love, but different, there was no sadness within it.

It was so bright and warm and soft. She wished all the Songs she had heard where there to feel it with her.

"Hello, my beautiful daughter," the presence that would she learn to know as Eru spoke, not in words, but fully understandable no less, "Hello Nienna."

Nienna.

She shivered when she felt Eru speak 'Nienna'. The very concept of Nienna gathered up the swirl of emotions and song that was her. They became bound together. There was so much of her, spilling into the Songs of other beings and their Songs spilling into hers, sometimes she wasn't even sure what she was. Was she Change? Light? Peace? Time? Justice? Growth? Creation? Was she all of them?

Now she knew she was Nienna. And Nienna was sorrow, love, compassion, and all that came from them.

"Your harmony is missing something, is it not? Or perhaps someone?" Eru continued on before a tiny ball of song and sky blue light floated to Nienna. Their Song was just a hum, but it wove in and out of Nienna's Song, making it stronger. Whatever was missing had been found in this beloved new being. Nienna wished she could sing with them forever.

"This is who I was looking for," She said with confidence.

"He is Irmo, he is your little brother. Take him to meet Namo, your older brother,"

And so he was Irmo and the first Song she had harmonized with was known as Namo.

Nienna and Irmo went to join Namo and all three Sang together. It felt so right and wonderful. She was complete with them. Even as they all encountered other beings and new Songs were formed, a special connection threaded them together and it always would.

The company of Namo and Irmo did not mean that Nienna did not desire to meet others. In fact it was the opposite she wished to sing with everyone and learn all about them. It did not matter what notes they had.

This held true when a shadowy powerful and grim being entered the siblings' favorite corner of reality. Irmo skittered away and Namo stared him down. But Nienna glided up to him, smiling.

"Hello, I am Nienna,"

"I am Melkor, it is nice to meet you. I did not expect there to be someone for sorrow. I can tell you have an important purpose," He said, likely thinking of her name and her Song.

"Thank you. That's very kind of you. I share in everyone's struggles and help them to be less alone," she answered. Knowing herself far better now.

"She has helped many," Namo added.

"How nice. I have my own troubles and woes-" Melkor started.

"Would you like to speak about them? I would like to listen," Nienna said.

"You would!? Well then come with me, I have quite a lot to tell you."

Melkor lead Nienna through a labyrinth of halls and started to speak about his life. It was not a long story for they were all newly created, but it was a story nonetheless. He spoke about having Eru's love all to himself until a little brother named Manwe came along. Nienna thought their life sounded charming, but Melkor resented how Eru payed attention to Manwe as well as him. It was hard for Nienna to understand how Melkor felt, for she loved her brothers, but she had compassion and listened to every word he said.

"Just recently Eru told him Manwe and then I asked what he told him, he said that it wasn't for me to know. How dare he leave me out?" Melkor growled.

"I would struggle with that as well," Nienna was quite saddened for Melkor, "The ways of Eru are often confusing and take time to understand."

"I don't care about his ways, I want to know what he couldn't tell me!"

"I understand, and I wish you could know what it was that you said."

"You do?"

"Yes, I do. It's important to you, so of course I wish it. Perhaps you could ask Eru why he could not tell you?"

"You wish it just because it's important to me?!" Melkor grinned, "That's a great idea. You were really helpful."

"Thank you, I am happy to hear that," Nienna smiled back as Melkor scampered away.

They had many meetings after that. Melkor would spill his troubles about everything from Manwe forgetting to say hello to him one time to Eru only telling him that he did a good job when it was normally said that he did a very good job. Nienna would comfort him and help him process. Nienna quickly formed a friendship with him. He had many he spoke to about his frustrations and they listened keenly, but soon it was clear that Nienna was his favorite. When she learned of what she meant to her friend, she had never felt such joy.
