Staring in shock at the now empty doorway, still processing the governor's decision on whether or not to accept his resignation, Steve frowned. "You don't really think that he meant that, do …" he began as he slowly turned his head to find Danny with a grin that stretched from ear to ear, watching him.
Danny's grin, if it was even possible, grew larger as he nodded and glanced back at the empty doorway before happily returning his attention back to Steve, "I think he did!"
The deep, worried frown that creased McGarrett's brow disappeared as he rubbed his hands together and turned, grinning in sheer relief at Danny. "That's great, Buddy! All we have to do is wait a couple of days and then you can tell him that you have decided not to accept my resignation."
"We could do that, Steven," Danny replied slowly, not yet quite willing to let Steve off that easily. "Or…" he added, a mischievous twinkle in his eye as an idea began to solidify in his mind. "Or…" he began again, smiling almost too innocently, "We can have a race…"
"A race?" Steve frowned, not sure where the conversation was going or just what Danny had in mind.
"A wheelchair race," Danny nodded before growing serious. "I want you to prove that you mean everything that you said to me about wanting me to stay. So, if you win, I will tell the Governor that I don't want to accept your resignation and I don't want to transfer back to HPD. "
"And if you win?" Steve asked tentatively, not certain if he really wanted an answer.
"If I win…" Danny winced as he sat up a little higher in the bed. Ignoring the tug of his stitches as he sat even more upright, he turned to face Steve, "If I win, then you, you Neanderthal animal, will carry out all of the doctor's orders to the letter! That means no driving, no drinking, no insane, suicidal, Ninja SuperSEAL risks. I expect you to take care of my liver!"
"So, what are the rules to this wheelchair race?" Steve frowned.
"No rules, anything goes," Danny began, his smile slipping back onto his face, "Once around the ward. We start here and we finish here."
Steve quickly nodded his agreement, "When?"
"Tomorrow morning." Danny yawned as he settled back against his pillows and closed his eyes. "The nurse told me they will be starting to get me out of bed in the morning. Danny paused, his smile replaced by a serious, no nonsense look as he added firmly, "If you really want me to believe that you really meant your apology and I if I am going to take a risk on you… on us… then I want… to start seeing … some proof." He mumbled as he drifted off to sleep, still smiling.

*Stepping out of the elevator as the doors slid open, Lou grabbed Kono's arm, stopping her from being barrelled over as Steve and Danny both in wheelchairs sped wildly past.
"Oh yeah, that seems like a real good idea," Lou frowned as he and Kono began to follow the two men racing down the corridor, watching as doctors and nurses tried to desperately jump out of the way of the speeding duo.
"Ten bucks on SuperSEAL." Kono grinned.
"Oh Sister, you have a bet!" Lou readily agreed to the bet as they watched Steve and Danny disappear around a corner with Steve in the lead.
After glancing over his shoulder to see how far Danny was behind him, Steve turned back around just in time to see a male nurse wheel suddenly appear with the medication trolley in front of him.
"Karma's a bitch!" Danny told him, taking the lead as he was unable to avoid the medication trolley.
Steve's competitiveness got the better of him as he raced to catch up with his partner as Danny called to some of the medical staff to get out of his way as he approached the next corner.
"No rules, anything goes!" Danny's words flashed through McGarrett's head as he lifted his foot as he caught up with Danny and kicked the back of Danny's wheelchair, sending the blond detective into the wall as they turned the next corner.
"It's over Partner, it's over! Do you hear me? It's over! Over!" Steve grinned over his shoulder.
Managing to catch up with McGarrett, they raced side by side down the corridor bumping into each other.
Seeing his opportunity as a nurse crossed the corridor in front of them, pushing a portable drip stand, Danny snagged the stand with his hand and pushed it over onto the ground in front of Steve's wheelchair wheels.
Unable to avoid the drip stand, Steve hit it, causing the wheelchair to come to a sudden stop which set him tumbling onto the floor as Danny skidded his own wheelchair to a stop outside their hospital room and looked back at him, triumphantly. Turning back to look at Lou and Kono as the nurse helped to untangle Steve's wheelchair from the stand, Danny grinned, "That felt really good!" as Steve stared up at him.
Taking the ten dollar note from her pocket, "Here," Kono announced as she handed it across to Lou.
"Mahalo," Lou grinned happily, accepting the winnings from their bet as he watched the scene in front of him.
