I don't own Naruto
Shira barely even touched her food as she sully looked at the celebration dinner, both Sakura and Ino side eyed each other until Ino cleared her throat. The action caused Shira to snap out of her trance-like state and look to her friends, "Oh shoot sorry."
Sakura had a small laugh escape, "It's ok, still worried about Naruto?" Shira had a small nod as she picked at her food.
After she didn't say anything else for a good couple seconds Ino jumped in, "Want to talk about it?" Shira looked up and quickly shook her head, "I don't want to ruin the celebration."
Ino sighed, "C'mon Shira Naruto is our friend, we are worried as well." Sakura nodded in agreement.
Now it was the female jinchuriki's turn to sigh, "It's just I feel responsible for his failing is all." Ino and Sakura collectively raised their eyebrows in confusion, to which Shira continued, "As you two know, me and Naruto hold two halves of the 9 tails. I got to know Kurama way before Naruto even tried to talk with his version. But I stopped him."
Sakura then simply asked, "Why?" Shira looked at the two back and forth, "Promise you won't tell Naruto?" The two nodded, Shira then looked at Ino, "Ino I am serious."
"What I swear!?" Shira pointed at the blonde, "I know you two tell each other everything but I swear you can't tell him anything!"
"I swear on my friendship with you guys geez!"
Shira gripped the edge of the table, "I later learn from Kurama that my half was the "good" version and even then he was still a jerk," she then heard a growl from Kurama she just internally chuckled as she apologized to her tailed beast, "I also learned that the version he held was more evil then even mine. If Naruto ever got to the Yin half then who knows what that bastard will do to my brother. The only reason I was able to do the clone jutsu was because I trained to harness Kurama's chakra alongside my own."
Sakura put a hand over Shira's that was gripping the edge tightly, "Hey we get it, you did it to not only protect the village but Naruto as well. You shouldn't blame yourself."
"I know I shouldn't, I guess I will just have to be there for Naruto a bit more maybe? I don't know," But she eventually smiled, "But I will make sure to help him in any way he needs to pass his next test!" The other two smiled as finally Shira smiled.
Shira sat in the shared apartment's living room, due to the inhabitants of two jinchuriki's the apartment was a bit bigger than other apartments in the complex. Shira sat with a light shining down on a book she was reading.
The front door was then heard and she immediately closed the book and stood up as the door to their apartment opened to reveal a smiling Naruto. Shira smelled a complex amount of scents on her brother, grass, dirt, ramen, but one that caught her was the scent of blood. He had blood on him but…it was his…wasn't it?
She saw that he was bruised and battered but the boy kept smiling as he greeted his sister and went to the sink for water. She got closer to him as she looked at his injuries, "What happened?!"
"Ah, I just trained a bit and got into a scuffle but it worked out in the end." Shira just looked at her brother baffled and without a word dragged him to the living room and forced him to sit down as she brought out their first aid kit.
"You know you can't heal like me Naruto, please stop getting in situations like this."
Naruto just chuckled, "Im tougher than I look sis it'll take a whole lot more than that to take this guy down." It was Shira's turn to smile, "And that's exactly what I worry about, I don't want to know how much it will take to bring you down."
"How was the celebration?" Shira nervously laughed, "Ah well you know how Ino and Sakura's parents are with us so they had to sneak out to meet up but other than that it was pretty fun."
Naruto frowned when reminded of the adults of this village and their hate towards the kids but quickly shook it off as he smiled, "Well I'm glad you guys were able to celebrate," he then got up from the couch and stretched, "Oh you should go to bed, teams are going to be announced tomorrow, wouldn't want to miss that."
Shira got up as well, "Yea you're probably right," she then turned to her room but stopped as she called out to Naruto, "Hey, you ok? You know you can talk to me about anything right?"
Naruto looked at her with a neutral expression but smiled, "Ah you don't have anything to worry about anything, oh and speaking of tomorrow I have a surprise for you." He retired to his room leaving his sister confused a bit but shrugged it off as she went into her own room.
The morning for the hidden leaf was nice and sunny, the light from the great ball of fire shone through the Hokage's office. Hiruzen sat in his chair as the jōnin instructors stood across. Hiruzen looked at his paper as he called out the teams to the instructors. Everything was going fine until Hiruzen called out Team 7, "Team 7, instructor Kakashi Hatake, Genin Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha, and Choji Akimichi."
The group of jōnin all collectively wore shocked expressions, even Kakashi was surprised, not only was Lord Third willing to break the usual Akimichi-Nara-Yamanaka team but he thought he would have the female jinchuriki.
Asuma was the first to step up and say something, "Lord Third, I thought I would head the usual trio? Why split them apart?" Hiruzen glared at the man, "You will find out soon enough, now be patient."
Asuma sighed at his father but proceeded to his former position. Hiruzen cleared his throat and proceeded, "Team 8, instructor Kurenai Yūhi, Genin Hinata Hyuuga, Shino Aburame, and Ino Yamanaka." Kurenai nodded as she could do a work around with the new member.
After two more teams were called out team 10 was now up, "Team 10, instructor Asuma Sarutobi, Genin Shikamaru Nara, Naruto Uzumaki, and Shira Uzumaki." The jōnin in the room once again seemed perplexed as the boy they all thought failed was now on a genin team with his sister. All eye were now Asuma who looked stoic but his mind ran 100 miles a minute trying to understand why his old man would do this, but in the end he kept his mouth shut as Hiruzen continued talking to the others. After they were dismissed, Hiruzen made sure to keep Kakashi, Kurenai, and Asuma in the office. Hiruzen clasped his hands together as they rested on the table, "Proceed with your questions as I see all three of you seem to have issues with my placements."
Kakashi was first as he coughed clearing his throat, "With all due respect Lord Third but I thought I would be in charge of the female jinchuriki?"
Hiruzen closed his eyes and sighed a bit, "Yes and Asuma was supposed to take this generations Akimichi-Nara-Yamanaka but as you see plans change. So what's the issue Hatake?"
Kakashi looked lax as he spoke to the Hokage, "Well if her brother did make the requirements then you could have swapped Haruno with the Uzumaki."
Hiruzen shook his head, "You don't get it do you, listen well all three of you, I am willing to sacrifice practical tradition if that means the best for the village, even if I have to step on the toes of faithful clans then so be it. Hatake you would be the best option for the siblings there is no question about that, but I question your teaching abilities."
Kakashi and the others gave a questionable look at the old man, to which he grumbled a bit, "Let me elaborate, those two don't just need an instructor, they need a mentor, someone to guide them to the right path for the greater good of the village, and I fear that the village has already turned those two to resenting the place they should be calling home."
Kurenai spoke up, "Isn't that role already being filled by Umino?" Hiruzen stood up to look at the village behind him, "Yes but there is so much that Iruka can do when he isn't going to be around them as much as he will with their instructor."
He then turned back to the three, "To continue my point Hatake, I don't think you would be fit to fill that role for them, not when all your energy will potentially be filled to the Uchiha. Call it favoritism all you want but I believe the best fit would be Asuma. No offense to you Yuhi but I feel as though the best fit for those two would be another hand to hand expert."
Kurenai simply bowed, "None taken."
Hiruzen then turned to his son, "I am entrusting you with the future of not only those kids, but the village as a whole. Do you think you can handle it?"
Asuma stood there for a second and smirked as he chuckled, "I won't lie I was blindsided with this…but I am willing to take those kids." Hiruzen for the first time that morning smiled, "Then it is decided, if any of the clan heads try to discuss with you on this matter, direct them to me I will handle it."
The three jōnin bowed and disappeared, Hiruzen leaned back in his chair sighing, "Well Minato…Kushina, you're kids are growing up fast. I just hope that whatever the future has in store for them is better than what it has been so far."
Shira entered through the door as she saw all the newly appointed genin discussing and anticipating their new lives as ninja. She scanned the room and saw Ino and Sakura talking, she headed up the stairs and greeted her friends.
They both greeted her back, Ino then asked, "Was Naruto ok last night?" Shira had a hand to her chin, "You know he was actually pretty…happy. I don't know why but he just had a smile plastered on his face. He also said he had a surprise for me today but he wasn't home when I woke up this morning."
As if on cue the door to the classroom slammed open and in came Naruto with a grin as he walked through the glares he was receiving and reached the three girls who gave him a confused look, Ino was first to say something, "Hey whiskers, what are you doing here? You do know that this is for people who passed, right?"
Naruto just snickered, "Ino-chan you are so right! I must have forgotten." He then reached into his pocket and took out the Hidden Leaf Hitai-ate which shocked the others. Shira's face lit up but then looked at him suspiciously, "You didn't steal that right?"
Naruto acted hurt, "How could my own sister even entertain the idea that I, Naruto Uzumaki. Would steal!" Naruto then tied the forehead protector around his forehead, "You can ask Iruka-sensei, he personally gave me one and passed me last night."
Shira's expression went back to bright as she tightly hugged her brother, "Ahh congrats!" After she let go, Ino who was now smiling hit him lightly in the arm, "Gave us quite a scare there whiskers, but we had hope for you."
Sakura chuckled a bit, "Especially to Shira, she was so worried at the celebration dinner." The female Uzumaki smacked her friend lightly, "Of course I was! Being Hokage is his only dream growing up."
A new voice came over the three, "Hey, Naruto." The three looked to see Choji chowing on some chips while Shikamaru was laying his head lazily on his forearms. Naruto smiled, "Anyways talk to you guys later." He then left to the guys waving him down. Shira just kept smiling at her brother and excited to see what comes ahead.
Iruka eventually came in and settled the excited genin and had the illustrious paper that would determine the teams.
"Ok, ok everyone calm down and quiet down as I call off names for teams."
The list went on as he named teams and eventually came Team 7, "Team 7, Akemichi Choji, Haruno Sakura, Uchiha Sasuke." Everyone was shocked, everyone and their parents thought the usual trio would be a team together but now they were separated.
Iruka though kept the flow going, "Team 8, Aburame Shino, Hyuuga Hinata, and Yamanaka Ino." Ino nearly slammed her head against the table, not only was she now on a whole other team but she wasn't even on a team with Naruto or Shira.
Iruka called out Team 9 and went to Team 10, "Team 10, Nara Shikamaru, Uzumaki Naruto, and Uzumaki Shira." Shira looked up to see Naruto smiling ahead as he patted Shikamaru's back who was shocked himself, he eventually looked down to see Shira staring at him. Shira immediately looked away and back to the front.
After the team assignments were up Iruka spoke once more, "Your instructors will meet you at your designated spots, I am glad to have taught all of you, be the greatest ninjas I know you all can be."
After Iruka left the room the Uzumaki siblings and Shikamaru left the classroom to their assigned room to meet their jōnin. As they walked down Shira broke the awkward silence, "Kinda weird that you're on our team huh Shikamaru?"
Shikamaru merely gave a quick, "Yea." Which just made Shrira twitch her eyebrow in annoyance but sighed as they continued the silent journey.
As they entered the room there stood presumably their Jounin smoking while leaning against an instructor's desk. Shira coughed as she entered waving her hand above her nose, "Uh sir can you uh not smoke in a room? For my sanity at least."
Asuma looked at the kids and sighed as he compiled, putting out the cigarette, he then smirked as he had a good look at his team, "So this is the team the old man gave me huh? Well I can always fix this scrappy team up."
"Eh!? Scrappy!?" Naruto yelled out, "We can take you on! Don't underestim-" Shira immediately covered her brother's mouth and nervously laughed while Shikamaru just sighed as he shook his head.
Asuma laughed, "Well you'll have your chance actually."
The others looked to their Jounin, "But for today why don't we introduce each other?"
The four in the room didn't know it at that moment but this was the start of not only the Uzumaki's journey but Team 10's trek to being considered legendary.
