Summary:

War-Rock sets Subaru's notebook on fire.

"So who's this 'fastening expert' we're going to see?" War-Rock pestered Subaru.

"Iinchou said he could fix the notebook you wrecked. Everyone around school goes to him when they have something they need mended up, but this is the first I'm hearing of such a person."

"You've come to the right place!"

"Kizamaro? You're the fastening expert?"

"Correct! I'm the school fastening expert!" Kizamaro gave his glasses an arrogant nudge. "Do you have a personal item that needs repairing, Subaru-kun? I can fix anything from torn upholstery to toy robots!"

"My notebook, it's…" Subaru pointed to the book's charred spine.

"Mm. Hmm." Kizamaro nodded vigorously. "Had a run-in with a Bunsen burner, I see."

"Courtesy of War-Rock," Subaru sighed, not bullish about its prospects.

Bullish, Gonta was a stronger fit.

"It's beyond saving, isn't it? I should just get a new one."

"I can work with this! I'll have it for you good as new faster than you can flip your Transer open! The front and back of your notebook, anyway!" Kizamaro dumped his bag on his desk, which contained zippers, a safety cutter, and a cutting mat.

"Zippers? Why do you have zippers?"

"Cut them off old clothes I don't wear anymore! I've been doing a lot of growing, if you haven't noticed!"

"No, I did. Do they work? The zippers, I mean."

"Do they work?" Kizamaro guffawed. "Did I pass my last eye exam?"

Subaru didn't know the answer to that.

"I passed, Subaru-kun. Now, observe a master at work!"

Kizamaro laid the notebook on the cutting mat, marking the inside edge of the spine with a ruler. With the cutter, he cut along the ruler vertically, severing the spine from the notebook. He worked hurly-burly, replacing the spine with a zipper, and cutting away and replacing the areas of cover and back cover that had scorch marks.

It was better than new.

It had a unique flavour to it Subaru latched onto, like the nerdiness of the boy who salvaged his notebook from the garbage heap.
