She swings her door open and sees the envelope sitting on her doormat. Olivia bends down to pick it up, closes the door, and sits on the couch. Deciding whether or not to subject herself to what Elliot calls, 'the rough draft." She swipes open her phone, punching in her passcode '6313,' and dials up Amanda.
Two rings go through when Olivia hears, "Hello…?" Olivia looks at her watch which reads 12:13 in the morning. Amanda asks, "Liv?"
"I'm sorry, I didn't realize how late it was," Olivia apologizes preparing to hang up.
"You're fine," Amanda gets up from her bed to not wake up Sonny, "What's going on?"
Olivia looks at the letter and sighs. She blurts, "We kissed."
"What?" Amanda is stunned awake, "Who?" She thinks as Olivia shakes her head in regret for blurting that out, "Wait…" Amanda starts to put the pieces together, "Don't tell me… You and…"
Olivia leans back into her couch remembering the kiss, "Mhmm."
Amanda squeals, "Oh my God! Just now? How?"
"Do you want the whole story or the SparkNotes version?" Olivia asks as she reaches for a blanket.
"The whole thing," Amanda grabs a bag of pre-popped popcorn from her cabinet, "I want all of the juicy details."
Olivia smirks, "It's not very juicy, I'll tell you that much." Olivia begins, "While I was putting Noah to bed, he had made himself a cup of tea." Olivia pauses and breathes, "I finally got Noah to stop talking about his week and go to sleep and then I see Elliot rummaging through my pantry."
"Well I guess he made himself at home," Amanda munches her popcorn.
Olivia notices her crunches, "I thanked him for picking up Noah, and you know what he says?"
Amanda is deep into this gossip, "What'd he say?"
"He said, 'You're family,'" Olivia stresses the importance. Amanda covers her mouth with a pillow trying not to wake the whole apartment up with her squeals. Olivia continues, "So I moved past that and asked him what he was looking for. And he shakes the sugar container that has been empty for over a month now."
"You still haven't refilled it?" Amanda remembers that the container was out the last time she was at Olivia's.
She rolls her eyes, "I've been kind of busy, Amanda." She turns onto her side to be more comfortable, "I get up and look through my cabinets for the sugar, and he just comes out and asks why I didn't call him."
"I mean, it is a valid question," Amanda adds.
Olivia continues, "I tell him that I didn't want him to try and protect me, which is true. He comes back and asks why that's a bad thing?" Amanda stays silent as she digests the information. Olivia keeps explaining, "And I said nothing!"
"You said nothing!?" Amanda exclaims.
Olivia nods along, "What was I supposed to say? And! And I still couldn't find the damn sugar. So while I sift through my cabinet I hear him get up. I can hear him take a step closer as he blatantly says, 'I care for you.'"
Amanda swoons, "Liv…"
Olivia is fired up, "And I say nothing."
Amanda can't seem to piece a sentence together, "Liv…"
"He tells me to turn around as I finally find the sugar. I knew damn well he would be close to me. Amanda, when I tell you that we had less than a foot in between us, I mean it. I could feel the heat radiating from him," describing this she starts to warm up, "I just stood there and stared at him. I leaned in, but I stepped back at the same time. I said I couldn't do it, and he asked me why."
Amanda looks in her popcorn bag to find out that there is no more, "Why can't you?"
Olivia sits back up and cradles her head in her hands, "Because what if it doesn't work out?"
Amanda rolls her eyes, "But what if it does, Liv?"
"That's what he said," Olivia continues to take deep breaths. She pauses and thinks about how to describe the next part of the story, "Manda, I don't know what happened, but something clicked in my brain; and for a split second, I just forgot everything. I forgot our past, my feelings, all I could think of was him in that very moment."
"You kissed him," Amanda gets to the point.
"I kissed him…" Olivia says it like she doesn't believe it. "Reality set back in and I backed up. Elliot went in again and… I mean it wasn't like I didn't enjoy it, but I just…" Olivia doesn't know how to describe her train of thought at that moment. "I pushed myself away and all I could say was how I wasn't ready."
Amanda smirks, "Sounds like you were pretty ready to me." Olivia doesn't register her retort. Amanda gives Olivia her two cents, "Olivia, are you really not ready for the relationship, or are you not ready to accept your feelings for him?"
Olivia avoids answering the question directly, "That was good."
"Wasn't it?" Amanda asks proudly of herself.
Silence fills the air. Olivia fiddles with the sealed envelope. She breaks the silence, "I just… I don't know what I want, Amanda."
Amanda checks her watch, it reads 12:20, "I think you do know what you want. I think you're having trouble putting everything behind you and moving forward with what you want." Olivia listens to every word. Amanda continues, "But, Liv… You don't have to ignore or forget your past. You don't have to start a whole new relationship. You can grow."
Olivia nods in agreement, "I know." Olivia slips her finger in between the sealed envelope preparing to open it, "Thanks Manda."
"Anytime," Amanda smiles, "Oh! And I have to ask… Was it good?"
Olivia chuckles, "Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Amanda smirks in response.
Olivia hangs up the call and starts to delicately open the envelope. She takes out what seems to be a torn-out page of notebook paper and begins to read.
My dearest Olivia,
