A/N: I think I'll make a sequel... What should the name of it be? Something simple, like 'Quarter Quell'? Or something inspiring?

Chapter 18:

The wedding. It had expanded to something a little more than just a simple ceremony.

The sun hung low on the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over District 12. Their families (minus Peeta's mom), the mayor, and Haymitch had gathered in the meadow of Victor's Village, where a makeshift wooden arch had been lovingly decorated with wildflowers. District 12's traditions were simple, but they were filled with deep meaning.

Peeta Mellark stood at the altar, his heart pounding with excitement. He wore a suit that had been passed down through generations, a symbol of his family's endurance. His blue eyes sparkled with anticipation as he awaited the arrival of his bride.

Nikki Swift, with her dark hair cascading down her back, walked down the aisle. She was dressed in a simple, white gown made from delicate fabric her mom and sister had scrounged together. Her hand was held by her father, a coal miner, a man who had seen the hardships of District 12 but now saw hope in his daughter's eyes.

As Nikki reached the altar, Peeta took her hand, and their fingers interlocked. The Mayor, who had overseen countless weddings in District 12, began to speak.

"Today, we gather to witness the union of Peeta Mellark and Nikki Swift. They have chosen to walk this path together, to support each other through the good and the bad, just as our district has done for generations."

The audience nodded in agreement, understanding the significance of the commitment they were making. District 12 was a place where unity and solidarity were crucial for survival.

The Mayor continued, "Peeta and Nikki, your love is a symbol of hope in these trying times. As you exchange your vows, remember that you are not just joining your lives but also the hearts and spirits of your families and this entire district."

Peeta and Nikki turned to face each other, their eyes locked in a deep and unwavering connection.

Peeta spoke first, his voice filled with love and determination. "Nikki, from the moment I watched over you as you healed, I knew you were the one who would light up my life. In a place where darkness can consume us, you've been my beacon of light. I promise to stand by your side, to protect you, to love you with all my heart, no matter what challenges we face."

Nikki's eyes glistened with tears of joy as she responded, "Peeta, you are my rock, my strength. You've shown me what it means to find love even in the harshest of conditions. I promise to stand by your side, to support you, to cherish every moment we have together, and to love you with all my heart, now and forever."

Their families watched the couple with genuine smiles, knowing that their love was a rarity in District 12.

The Mayor then handed Peeta and Nikki a small piece of coal, a symbol of their shared heritage, and a loaf of bread, a symbol of sustenance and nourishment. They placed the coal and the bread into a wooden box together, sealing it as a reminder of their promises to one another. "With the exchange of coal and bread, may your love be as enduring as the coal that has warmed our homes for generations and as nourishing as the bread that has sustained us," he proclaimed.

Peeta and Nikki then exchanged rings, simple bands of gold that they had saved for over time. These rings represented their commitment to each other and their shared future.

The Mayor concluded, "By the power vested in me by the traditions of District 12, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may seal your vows with a kiss."

As Peeta and Nikki shared their first kiss as a married couple, their families erupted in cheers, celebrating not only the union of two individuals but the enduring spirit of their district. Haymitch toasted them with his flask, smirking at the young couple.

The newlyweds turned to face the crowd, their faces filled with love and gratitude. In the midst of hardship and sacrifice, they had found each other, and in that love, they discovered the strength to face whatever challenges lay ahead. District 12 had witnessed a moment of pure and unbreakable love. Their wedding, grounded in tradition and filled with heartfelt vows, was a symbol of hope, proving that love could thrive even in the darkest of times.

The Mayor whispered to the newlyweds, "Don't worry. Everyone here will keep this quiet until you give the word for me to file the paperwork."

Nikki smiled at him. "Thank you," she said. Then she turned to her husband and they started to their house to celebrate with their friends and family.
