Hello! here is a one shot I wrote as I was playing the game.
_
Sidon and Riju followed Zelda in silence through the maze, until they began hearing noises.
In a chamber ahead they could clearly hear Link.
'Who is he talking to?' signed Sidon, but Zelda only told them to listen.
In the chamber Link was throwing kunais at the targets marked by the arrows of a young man dressed in a green tunic over a chain mail. The princess could feel his presence, but neither she nor the sages could see him or his weapons. They couldn't hear him either.
"What for? Didn't you notice how they look at me? 'Maybe being alone for so long turn him insane', 'maybe facing such horrors turn him insane', 'maybe he was already insane to begin with'. It was only a nightmare... I'm starting to think I was indeed a nutjob from the start. And you two certainly don't help my case."
"So, you rather not see us?"
"That's not what I mean. But it isn't reassuring in the least that nobody, but monsters can interact with you besides me. What does that make me? A monster or a nutjob?"
"The chosen hero"
"Sure, some hero... Hey! If we are doing this at least give me a challenge!"
"You just saved Hyrule and you still don't believe it?"
"It's not a matter of believing it or not. "
"Then what's the problem?"
"Everybody has a thousand things left to do. I mean, Zelda has just been appointed queen, she's set on rebuilding the kingdom. Yunobo is now an entrepreneur, a successful at that, has his business to take care of. Tulin is a kid on the way to becoming chief of his tribe. Riju and Sidon... Do I even need to say anything? But my mission is over, what am I supposed to do? There aren't that many monsters left to join the monster control crew. I could help Purah or the Zonai Survey team, but they would rather have me as test subject or errand boy, and I'm not really into getting anymore lectures on amazing discoveries. Same with the clover gazette... Fi, please stop. Thanks"
'Who is Fi?'
'The master sword. It was... Singing?'
"A familiar feeling"
"Yeah, well, with the crucial difference that you had a whole village waiting for your return to, at the very least, distract you from your loss, while I, despite being the proud owner of two houses, have nobody to care less about whether I even make it back to them or just collapse either at a cave or atop some ruins."
"Come on, you know that isn't true."
"Look around! All I have is you, a very helpful but paranormal bunch with whom I will not be able to interact once I return Fi to her resting place and my hero powers get sealed along with my access to the lost woods."
"You don't even know if that is going to happen."
But Link didn't seem to listen to him "... Zelda has been passively aggressively asking me to close the chapter already, but she would have to excuse my procrastination of the meeting with the Deku tree, I'm not exactly ready to cut off all remnants of the purpose of my existence yet... And now that I said that out loud, I realize I'm overtiming you both. I'm sorry, you don't have any need to put up with my whining." He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, turning away.
"Never mind that. Link?" The other guy put a hand on his shoulder.
"There's still much left to explore in the depths, I could just trip and die down there. Or go drown at the Spring of Courage to wait for the next hero in the line, hoping he fares better than we did."
'He isn't serious, is he?' signed Sidon alarmed.
"That would rather complicate things for him since you'll become a very dreadful stalfos..."
"Wasn't your mentor a stalfos?"
"He died of old age, link. Most heroes did."
"Details... I also need to return the slate to Purah and Robbie. I should do that first."
"That would render your wandering increasingly difficult."
"It's just as dangerous to have it since it's become an instrument of torture. Nothing healthy will ever come from looking at his pictures or spending so much time at the water temple."
'Whose pictures?'
"The Zora King's?"
"As of late those heights had become soooo tempting..."
Tears rolled down Link's eyes."
"Well, at least Sidon is alive."
"Well, of course he is alive, I made damn sure of that! And let's not forget happily married... And NOT to ME!" Instead of a kunai, Link threw a trident at the target, but so hard it split, and the weapon fell to the tiles with a loud echoing clang. "See? That's why I don't buy that stupid Hero title. Heroes are supposed to be virtuous, but me? Oh, I'm rotten jealous to the core!"
'Jealous of whom?' Riju turned to Zelda, but she pointed at Sidon since he was the only newlywed who came to mind. Sidon blinked incredulously.
Link rubbed his face with his free hand.
"But... But I met Lady Yona and, as much as I like to hate her, I can't."
'It's you!' signed Zelda to Sidon, he just shook his head and urged the girls to let him pay attention.
"She looks like the real deal, and whatever reason Sidon has to love her," Link lifted the trident with his foot "it is none of my business. He looked so happy... He would never know the sole reason I succeeded on this whole ordeal was to get him the happily ever after I lost when I screwed up a hundred and so years ago..." as Link kneeled in complete defeat, Sidon was about to jump out to him, but Zelda stopped him. Link slammed the trident to the floor "Damn cultural gaps!" he tried to clear his tears "if only he hadn't formulated his vow like that, I could have been in denial a bit longer and maybe gets over him. But no! When have things gone my way? He had to go and be himself, and mess me up for good. Now I can't take him out of my head and if I wasn't insane before, this would surely do it! It had to be my luck..." his voice was breaking "that I only sorted out the way I feel for him just in time for his wedding. Fighting the dragon was not nearly as taxing as standing beside him at the ceremony. His smile was so bright... I could go through the calamity again just looking at his smile. If only I had said something earlier, but how was I supposed to figure it out in the middle of hopping from one freaking danger to the next? Did you see him out today?"
"You mean the three meters of red muscle and sharp teeth framed in all that intricated silverwork?"
Link chuckled despite the tears "he was absolutely dashing!"
"I'm nobody to judge."
"You have been awfully vague about the Twilight Princess. So far all I know is that she had a very mischievous sense of humor, she could be very manipulative at times, she wielded very powerful all-purpose magic, and she was both brave and hotheaded enough to go all out after Ganondorf herself. But how did she look like?"
"Well, as a twili... Living in the twilight, the twilis get this pitch-black skin... With random patches of bluish grey... She was taller than me..."
"How tall?"
"Well, a head taller than me is still workable."
"Hey! I hope you are not calling me short; you are not much taller than me!"
"I rather meant the Zora King is too tall to be fun, but ok. Midna had this bright colored hair... Like the strands on the Fused Shadow. That was her cursed crown, I did tell you that."
Link took out the cursed crown and looked at it.
"She wore it on a complicated hairstyle, framing a face as delicate as glass... And her eyes... So mysterious and warm as the last living coals on a bonfire: black, red, and golden..."
"Despite the poetic description I can't really picture the way she looked. You still are fond of her... I wonder if this... Let's call it xenophilia is common to the heroes. Sidon told me his family treasure, the Zora Saphire was lost when the Zora Princess gave it away to the Hero, which kind of set a precedent for my relationship with Mipha."
"And that was my mentor."
"The stalfos?"
"The hero of time."
"Ok... And how did that go?"
"Nowhere, actually."
"WHAT?"
"The jewel was the key to the temple of time. Despite the princess' intentions, he needed it for other purposes and couldn't recover it afterwards."
"Man, that's awful. "
"What's awful is that the guy had his own fan club, but his love was a korok..."
"A korok..." Link interrupted using his hands to convey the average size of a korok.
"Yes, well, as I understand, koroks didn't always look like they do today. As I was saying, he had to leave her in the lost woods for his mission, but seven years later she didn't even recognize him and he didn't pushed it. He intended to remain by the the Hylean Princess, but she sent him off in guilt for taking so long of his life to battle Ganondorf - That must have been the longest battle ever sustained..."
"Send him off how? Sounds fishy"
"I don't recall the details, but that princess was also a sage of time, so I imagine back in time."
"That was the reward, just undo everything... And she decided that unilaterally! Now tell me you too see a pattern of broken hearts here. We are doomed."
"You are being melodramatic, that only makes three of us. We don't know about the others. There's been plenty others."
"Yeah, like the hero of the masks. If what I've gathered from them is right, my struggles are but bad joke in comparison."
"That was also my mentor."
"What do you mean? Do you also meet him? No way the Hero of Time and the Hero of the Masks are the same guy!"
"I'm afraid so."
"Fi! He is kidding me, right? Tell me he is lying!" Link took out the masks from his magic utility belt. A Zora, a Goron, a weird looking plant, a stone one, a Sheikah? And an eerie colored one... The invisible poes surrounding them grabbed the masks and danced around with them.
To the hidden audience that looked really disturbing.
"Apologies, master. The Hero of Twilight speaks the truth."
"Well now it makes sense he turned into a stalfos! There is so much one guy can handle in a lifetime! Why isn't his story written down somewhere? Heroes are not supposed to be forgotten like that, especially after... After... Am I going to be forgotten too? Link! I never even heard of the Hero of Twilight until I met you!"
'So, he is talking to the Hero of Twilight and his name is also Link?'
"Link, were we forgotten? Really?" he extended his hand and, after staring at it a moment, Link gave him the fused shadow. The Twilight hero grabbed it and held it dearly. "I had no idea you were so vain as to go through all this mess just for recognition."
"I didn't, but..."
"Sidon won't forget you soon. The guy placed a statue of the two of you together at the Domain's plaza! And Zoras live, how long? As for the Heroes..." The Twilight hero sighed "Sadness, hurt and regret do not need to be passed down. We are heroes, but we are also people. We mess up and get messed up. There's no need to propagate the stories of woe. It is enough that people remember there was a courageous guy who dared defy all odds for what was right and succeeded. Also, we invested a great deal of effort in passing down to you the knowledge we gathered through our struggles, and I'll dare talk on all the Heroes behalf: we are pretty proud on the results. You surpassed my wildest expectations." He gave back the fused shadow.
"Hmp, you didn't teach me how to use a flail and you are still better horseback archer than me."
"Well, you never got a decent flail to practice. And horseback archery is my passion as skydiving is yours."
"I guess you are right" Link put away the masks and the fused shadow "Which gives me the task of figuring out how to continue the legacy."
"We have pleeenty of time to think about that. Link, right now, your first priority should be talking to Sidon."
"Yeah, sure. And tell him what? 'Yes, my prince, I have loved you since the first time I saw you. Would you ditch your queen and your people and elope with me to live in a hole in the ground?' Come on, I'm insane but not quite there yet! What part of happily married didn't you got? He's got Yona and the domain to care for. I wouldn't... I can't do that, THIS to him. After all the mess I went through, and every second I spend praying to the goddess, every offering I left for them, so he becomes as happy as I'm miserable, I'll not be the one to ruin it all by burdening him needlessly... And by the way I'm already late for today's rites"
"It's not the jealousy that will turn you insane. It's loneliness and silence. It's one thing when people abandon you and a whole other when you run from them. Please just consider it. So where to?"
"Don't know, does it matter? I'm carving something sour... The Spring of Power, I'm feeling like greeting sunrise choking on durians ..."
"Won't you tell Zelda?"
"She is busy with her guests. Nobody inquired about my whereabouts before, I doubt they start now."
