Pride and Prejudice

Fan Fiction SHORT ONE SHOT

Mr. Bennet's Visit

A full belly laugh came from Andrea's kitchen. It was Tauna's laugh, one she knew well. She stepped inside and was surprised to see Thomas Bennet sitting at her table and her sister in the bay window.

"I thought you knew nothing about Pride and Prejudice," she said.

"I don't." Tauna wiped tears of laughter from her eyes and held her sides. "But did you really write this?" She held up a piece of paper and Andrea realized her sister was not laughing because she could see Thomas, but because of what she had been reading.

"Give me that." Andrea tried to snatch the paper from Tauna's hand, but her sister jumped up and ran up the stairs to the attic. "That was a rough draft! I ditched the story!"

"Thomas Bennet in a tutu and wearing ballerina shoes?" Tauna's laughter filled the air again as she slammed the door and locked it.

Andrea took a deep breath and let it go. She faced Mr. Bennet- expecting him to be angry.

"Is that how you see me?" The gentleman asked, trying to keep a straight face, as Andrea reluctantly explained what the items were.

"It was supposed to be a comedy piece. It did not turn out the way I wanted. I threw it in the garbage." She sat down and asked why he had come.

"I had a rather amusing dream," he said. "I was dancing in the most bizarre outfit, my wife was calling for salts, Elizabeth's mouth was spewing wise words, Lydia was flying like a kite with Wickham barely holding the string, Kitty was sporting a tail and pawing the air like a playful cat. Mary was a worm with glasses and Jane? She was sitting on the sofa, perfectly composed and unbothered by it all; as if we were all normal. I wondered, perhaps...you had something to do with it?" He grinned widely. "After all, the last time you interfered in my life, I not only gained an heir for Longbourn, but also became a wealthy man with a young wife, and I quite enjoyed that; though I must admit, I found being a baronet rather annoying." His face soured at the mention of the title, but then he grinned again. "So, I came to ask...did you have a hand in it?"

"I think you already know the answer," Andrea grumbled as she heard Tauna laughing once more. "I really threw that thing in the trash. But clearly, my darling..." She mimicked Mr. Bennet's sarcastic tone. "Baby sister decided to retrieve it." Andrea's face took on a glum expression as she rested her chin in her palm. "Just another reason for Mary to be annoyed with my writing."

"I am sure my darling daughter will recover," he said with a twinkle in his eye, "and she did look quite adorable as a worm." He and Andrea laughed at the absurdity of his words.
