Chapter One
September 29, 2018 – Casey Home, Chicago
She was currently in the midst of packing her latest suitcase, her fourth by her count; the suitcases which she plans to take with her on the trip that she and her husband of (almost) two years on their trip. A trip which she's grateful Matt convinced her to take, as it's a trip that she truly believes will do them some good; especially when it comes to their goal of repairing their marriage, which has been tense over the past couple months. And that worries her, especially since she loves her husband more than anything and wants to stay married to him, which is the entire reason why they're getting away in the first place: so that they can repair their marriage and get past the horrible fight they had with each other in this very home just a few months ago. A fight they had about her wanting to get pregnant, regardless of how risky it would be to her health; more specifically, how she could die if she were to get pregnant. And while she did hope that time apart this summer would do them some good, it turned out that it didn't; instead, it just made things worse.
The reason? Well, she still thought about that fight every time she thought about her husband; the man she wants to make a father more than anything due to the fact that it's his biggest dream. And hopefully, they can find a way to do that; and if it includes her getting pregnant, then she's going to support that. However, they weren't there yet. They weren't in a place where they can be talking about having a child with each other as they instead need to work on something else: they need to work on their marriage, as well as their communication skills; especially considering she's been keeping secrets from him, which is another reason why she's glad to be getting some time away from Chicago…and Sylvie Brett. God, the way that paramedic treated her was just horrible. And while she does want to forgive her, she's just not there yet; not when she knows she hasn't learned her lesson, especially after she learned that she's actually been promoted to her former position. And, in her opinion, she's not worthy of that position; not after what she did.
But, more on that later; it's a topic that she and Matt are going to talk about after all, including her part in the situation. Yes, she was partially to blame, as she went onto the call with a bunch of bad thoughts in her mind after the fight that she had with Matt; so, it's not fair for her to put all the blame on Sylvie. She wasn't her best on that call, she was her worst. And if anything, she should've just not gone on that call; as that's what she was required to do if things ever got tense with her partner. She needed to just take a breather and relax, especially after she had a fight with her husband at the house too. But, she was trying not to dwell on the past; not when she can instead just concentrate on the future: the bright future that she was going to have with her husband as they get away with each other on their trip, and not just a short trip; rather, they were going to be getting away for a while. And just how might they be doing that? Well, they're going to be going on a road trip in an RV, which means they're going to be stuck together for months.
And honestly, she has no idea whether that's a good thing, or a bad thing. On one hand, they can talk to each other and try and work things out; yet, on the other hand…it may just make them realize that they don't want to be with each other anymore. And that's her worst fear, that this trip will just push them towards the inevitable: them getting divorced and going their separate ways. But, not if she and Matt have anything to say about it; and they do have a say when it comes to whether they stay married or not, due to the fact that they're the ones in charge of their own destiny. They're the ones who get to control whether they stay married or not by doing the right thing, which would be to put in the work required to save their marriage. And while she was hesitant to do so at first (as she thought there was nothing to save and due to the fact that she was planning to go back to Puerto Rico), she's glad she stayed due to the fact that it means that she gets to be with her husband, who made her realize that she belongs with him.
At the same time, she also realized that he'd do literally anything for them to be together; so, that's precisely what they're going to do. They're going to do whatever it takes for them to fix the problems in their marriage, while they have fun as they explore the United States (which is what they're going to do as they take a bunch of time away with each other). And honestly, she can't wait; this trip sounds like a lot of fun, and she has a feeling that Matt is just as excited as she is for their trip which they're going to take together over the next few months; maybe even years if she can have it her way. But, that's fine with her as it's what they need to do. Plus, they've never taken a honeymoon, and they just need to get away with each other, which is why this sounds like a lot of fun. And that's precisely what Matt thought she was thinking about when he saw her smiling, which is precisely what he told her he saw when he came into the room to get her attention. "I can see you smiling." Looking up at the man of her dreams, Gabby smiled.
After all, that's precisely what she's in the midst of doing right now: smiling. "Yeah, I'm smiling as I think of you." Matt nodded when he heard Gabby say that, while also setting down the suitcase he had in his hands. After which, he made his way over to her and just smiled as he went to wrap his arms around her. "Hi." Wrapping her arms around Matt, Gabby smiled as she looked up at the man of her dreams. "Hi you." Bending down, Matt smirked due to the fact that he loves this woman more than anything. "So, did you go get the RV we rented?" Matt agreed with his wife and smiled, as that's what he just got back from doing. "And I got the ice packs you wanted me to go, along with the coolers. I can only assume you want to bring groceries?" Gabby smiled. "We aren't eating out all the time, we picked one with a kitchen for a reason." Matt agreed with his wife, well aware that was the case. "And, if we do need to eat out…then we're going to have our car with us as I learned how to attach our car to it." Gabby agreed, glad he did that.'
After which, she cuddled up to him and just smiled as she felt him wrap his arms around her; holding her tight to his chest in the process, Matt bend down and kissed the top of her head. "I'm glad that we're doing this." Gabby agreed with Matt as she looked up at her loving husband. "I know you are, because you don't want to lose me." Matt agreed. "I don't Gabby, which is why we're going to do this. We're going to take the time we need, so that we can just take it easy and hold each other close as we explore the United States; while we also fix our marriage." Gabby agreed with her husband, as that's why she's here in Chicago rather than in Puerto Rico (for now). "Promise me that we do that though? I want to save us." Matt agreed. "I promise. We're going to save our marriage. Now, are we going to tell people that?" Gabby sighed. "Better to be honest, we're family anyways." Matt agreed. "I thought you might say that, so I changed it from Molly's to here. Wanted to keep it private." Gabby agreed with her husband, smiling at him.
After which, she looked up into his eyes. "I really hope they understand why we're doing this, rather than just seeing it as us running away. I just want to concentrate on our marriage." Matt agreed with Gabby, well aware that the optics could make it seem like they were running away, especially when they have problems here. "I don't want to say anything yet Gabby, but that is what you did after all. You ran away from me." Gabby sighed as she made her way over to their bed, as that's something she hated. She hated that she did that to her husband, but she couldn't deny that it was the truth. So, she just sat down and looked at her husband; while also inviting him to come sit with her…which is precisely what he did. He made his way over to her and just smiled as he moved to sit down next to her and wrapped his arm around her. After which, he placed his hand in her lap and grabbed hers; while also pressing his lips to her forehead, only for Gabby to let his hand go and place her hand on his chest as they held each other close.
Turning his head when she did that, Matt looked down at the woman he loves. "Hey, look at me." Gabby agreed with Matt as she turned her head and looked up at the man of her dreams. "You okay with Gabby? Remember what we agreed to, complete honesty." Gabby agreed with her husband. "I know, and I promise. I'm just worried that we aren't going to be able to fix us, as we seem to have drifted apart in what we want. I mean, we both want a baby; but we can't agree how." Matt agreed with his wife. "And we can figure it out. I know, things are hard when it comes to that. But, I promise that we're going to figure it out. We're going to talk, and we're going to make sure we that we do it the right way. We're going to sit together, and we're going to try and find out the best way for us to have a baby." Gabby agreed. "I'm still not adopting. You know why." Matt agreed with his wife, well aware that was the case. "I know baby, and I promise that we can figure out ways. But, can I at least ask you to think about it again? The option I mentioned?"
Looking up at Matt. "Newborn babies from moms who don't want them?" Gabby sighed, as she knew that she needed to be open to all the options for her him. "I know. And I promise to keep an open mind, just like you promised that you will never say goodbye to me again." Matt agreed with his wife, as that's precisely something he plans on doing for his wife. "I promise. I'm always going to be there for you. And I hope we can talk about that more." Gabby agreed with her husband, before looking up into his eyes and kissing him softly, while also thinking about something that was on her mind. "Do you think they're going to understand?" Matt sighed when Gabby asked him that question. "Gabby, I hope to god they do. But, we may need to be honest with them so that they get it. And I think that…if we're honest with them, then they'll understand. Now, I did tell them we were offering pizza." Gabby laughed, as she knew that was precisely what they were doing. "By the way, I hope you know that I mean it when we're going to talk."
Gabby agreed, well aware that was the case. "I know baby, and we will talk as we drive around. By the way, we really need to make a list of where we want to go." Matt smirked. "I want to go to New York City again, with you this time. It was a nice trip." Gabby agreed with her husband. "God, you need to do that. I still hate that you went the week before our wedding!" Matt smiled. "Blame Boden for that. But then, I want to go to Miami and see what I missed in Puerto Rico." Gabby smirked as she heard Matt say that, well aware of what he was talking about. "You mean me in a bikini?" Matt agreed. "Yeah, I saw the pictures online. I mean, that was tiny babe." Gabby smirked. "Don't worry, I packed it…along with some sexy lingerie for you." Matt smirked as he heard Gabby say that, before placing his hand on her neck and starting to take things nice and slow with the woman of his dreams. "I love you." Gabby agreed with Matt, as she loves him too. "I love you too. And I promise to defend our decision." Matt agreed, ready to do just that as well.
"When do you want to leave, anyways?" Gabby smiled. "Let's talk to our friends first, then we can figure that part out." Matt agreed with his gorgeous wife as she said that, before smiling as he got close to her. He then proceeded to kiss her softly. "I love you Gabby and I can't wait to get away together." Gabby agreed, as she felt the same way. After all, why wouldn't she be excited to get away with the man she loves more than anything in the entire world? He's an amazing husband and the love of her life. "You want to go for a quick round before they get here?" Matt smirked. "Maybe after, right before we keep packing." Gabby agreed as she leaned in and kissed him softly, okay with them doing that as she already knew why he didn't want to go for it yet: he didn't want to get interrupted when they were in the middle of having fun with each other, which very much is a possibility when they've invited the entire firehouse here. And that means that they may arrive at different times, interrupting them in the process.
"So, here's the thing guys; me and Gabby have decided to get away for a while so that we can work on our marriage."
Their friends were absolutely stunned when they heard Matt say that (a) they were leaving Chicago and getting away for a while, so that they can (b) work on their marriage; especially since they had no idea that their marriage even needed to be worked on. At least, that was how Matt was reading the room at the moment; clearly able to see all the open mouths and stares of shock. That was, until Kelly spoke up and spoke for the group. "Sorry, what? Matt, I'm your best friend; why is this the first time I'm hearing about this?" Sighing, Matt, and Gabby both looked at each other; while she also reached for Matt's hand, as she wanted to answer. "We didn't want to worry you guys." Boden agreed with Gabby. "Well, we're worried now. Are you guys okay? Be honest with us so that we can help." Matt sighed, before turning to look at his wife. "Do you want to tell them why we're in a bad place in the first place?" Biting her lip, Gabby thought about it before agreeing. "Listen, we're only telling you once; so, listen up." The firehouse agreed with Gabby.
After all, there are a couple things in life that they know about Matt and Gabby: (1) they are not a couple who like to share things about their marriage; and (2) when Gabby Dawson tells you that you need to listen, then you need to listen to what she has to say. So, that's precisely what they're going to do. "Gabby, how about you start with the news we got? I think that's when we really started to have problems." Gabby agreed with Matt. "Yeah, so here's the thing. This spring, me and Matt started trying for a baby." Everybody smiled and cheered when they heard that. "Congratulations!" Matt sighed. "Guys, just listen. This is not easy on Gabby." Looking at Gabby as he heard Matt say that, Herrmann got worried; especially since he's always seen Gabby as another one of his daughters. "You okay Gabby?" Gabby sighed. "Well, this spring we went to the doctor to get some help with fertility issues." Everybody agreed. "And we got some hard news there about the aftermath of my pregnancy a few years ago?" Herrmann sighed.
After all, he knew precisely what she was talking about. "While we told you guys it was a miscarriage, the truth is that it was really an ectopic pregnancy. So, the baby was never really viable as it was growing outside my uterus. In the process, it also had another side effect; it created an aneurysm on my right iliac artery." Brett and Foster both looked at Gabby when she said that, both knowing that isn't good, which made Gabby realize that Brett was here. "And you putting stress on me that last shift was not a very good thing Sylvie, so we're going to have to have a conversation about that at some point. Because honestly, you do not deserve to be PIC!" Rubbing Gabby's back, Matt looked at his wife as he knew what happened now. "Yet, we can talk to her and Chief after if you want." Gabby agreed. "Oh yeah we do, because there is no way she's PIC anymore; not when she threw the ambo bag at me and abandoned me on a call!" Boden turned his head to look at Sylvie when he heard that. "Excuse me?" Sylvie got nervous.
However, Gabby didn't want to talk about it yet. "Boden, back here. Why we're taking time off." Boden agreed with Gabby. "So, back to what we were saying. Me and Matt, we just need to take some time off and talk. Especially after the latest news we got in May. Uhm, the reason I left was because…" Kissing Gabby's hand as he grabbed it, he gave her the courage to spit it out. "Because of the ectopic pregnancy, and the aneurysm…the doctor told me I could die while I'm pregnant if I get pregnant." Everybody was shocked and horrified when they heard Gabby say that, while just looking at her; after all, how could that be? I mean, that's not fair to her when she's had to go through so much in life; especially when she wants to be a mom more than anything, which would mean she has to put her life on the line. "Yeah, so there's a lot there that we need to talk about. And…me and Matt just need to take time and concentrate on each other, get away and figure things out with each other." Matt agreed with his wife as he kissed the side of her head.
Meanwhile, Boden just took a minute to think as he decided to speak for the group. "Matt, Gabby. I think I can speak on behalf of the group and say that I am so sorry…we all are…for what you guys have gone through recently. And Matt, I apologize for missing the signs that you needed to take time. Had I known, I would've forced you to take time and just be with Gabby. You probably came back to work right away after learning about this and it must've been hard." Matt agreed, as it was hard to do. "Especially when I knew that Gabby was really hurting. And that's why I want to take time away with her, so that I can make it up to her. Just make her feel like she's my world again and she knows that I'll be here for her." Boden agreed with Matt. "And I have no idea how long that'll take…" Boden stopped Matt, as he didn't want him to worry about that. "Matt, I understand as I've been where you are in the past. I want you to take it easy and concentrate on your marriage, that's what you and Gabby need to do right now." Matt and Gabby both agreed.
After which, she spoke to Boden. "Boden, thank you. Thanks for letting us do this, as I want to fix things between me and Matt." Boden agreed with Gabby. "And I promise, I will talk to Sylvie, and I hope to figure out just what happened there between you guys." Gabby sighed. "I'll send you a report of what happened, as I do not want to talk about it. It's hard to revisit when I have a lot on my mind." Boden agreed, while Sylvie looked at Gabby. "Gabby, for what it's worth…I'm sorry. I had no idea you were dealing with this." Stella then went to speak up, deciding to bring something up that needed to be said. "Yeah, you're sorry when you were staring at her husband all summer while she was gone!" Gabby just looked at Sylvie when she said that. "Stella, talk to her for me?" Matt agreed. "Hey, you need to know I only want you." Gabby agreed with Matt, well aware that was the case. "I know baby, I know."
Matt agreed with his wife and smiled as he leaned in and kissed her softly. "I love you." Gabby agreed with Matt, smiling as she loves her husband too; more than anything in the entire world.
Gabby's POV:
Standing in me and Matt's room shortly after we finished talking to the firehouse (and making sure that Boden gets Matt some time off), I smiled as went back to packing; more specifically, I packed some of Matt's sweats which we were both going to wear on the trip. Meanwhile, I also thought about how supportive our friends were of the fact that we need to take some time away to concentrate on our marriage. The marriage I want to save between me and the man of my dreams, who just walked into our room. "So, we're really doing this?" Turning around to look at my loving husband, I smirked as we most certainly are. "That we are." Making my way over to our bed, I went to set some of his sweats down and then made my way over to him; wrapping my arms around him, I smirked due to the fact that I'm very happy. However, I was even happier when Matt tugged me against his chest and held me close to him. "Oh, now I love this." Matt agreed with me as he bent down and kissed me softly. "And I love you, forever." I agreed with Matt and smiled.
After which, I watched as he picked me up in his arms and wrapped my legs around his waist. "When do you want to leave?" I smirked when Matt asked me that, before wrapping my arms around his neck. "As soon as we can, because it's what we need. We need to get away and just spend time with each other, maybe even some sexy time with each other." Matt agreed with me, smiling as he carried me to our bed and then proceeded to sit down on the edge of it with me in his lap. Bending down, he then proceeded to kiss my shoulder while tugging me against his chest; running his hand up my back afterwards, Matt smiled as he started to suck on it. "I promise, we're going to figure things out and be happy with each other babe." I agreed with Matt, smiling as I leaned back and then wrapped my arms around his neck to kiss him softly. "You want to go check out the RV so we know how much we can pack?" I smirked, shaking my head as that's the last thing I want to do right now. "Not when I want you instead." Matt agreed.
After which, he went to grab my shirt and went to take it off so that he could give me the pleasure we both crave. The love and pleasure we both owed each other as we got ready to have a bunch of fun right here, right now ahead of us going away on a trip.
