A/N: I am a sucker for Loki's happy ending, so this was born. Maybe Loki doesn't have to be alone.
Despite my other Loki story, I am actually a big Sylki fan.
After she left Mobius to "let time pass," Sylvie stepped through the time door into her apartment back in Oklahoma. After everything that happened, her specific timeline reappeared, surely by Loki's doing. She felt even more guilty than usual as she sunk into the armchair in front of the TV. How could she just let him walk down that gangplank alone? How could she let him do it all alone?
"You go, I go," rang in her ears constantly.
"Damn you," she muttered to herself. She wasn't sure if she meant herself or Loki, or if it even mattered.
Sylvie couldn't figure out how she let him get under her skin. In all her centuries, no one had ever gotten close enough to be an attachment. When she was first stolen from her timeline, she was too young to care about these things. And by the time she was old enough to care, her innate hedonistic side was just fine hopping from partner to partner. Living in apocalypses ensured she'd never see those people again anyway.
She never really bothered with other Lokis. They were always so preoccupied with power, control, and revenge that it usually blinded them and then ended up as another Loki that lost. No sense in getting tangled up with that.
But this one, this one… What was so different about this one? Why was he the one that convinced her to stick around? The one that fought side by side with her in the TVA and the Void and with her at the Citadel. The one that forgave her for kissing him and kicking him through a time door. The one that convinced her again to stick around and fix the TVA rather than burn it to the ground like she wanted. He kept her from killing Timely. And look where it got him…
"Idiot."
Sylvie looked around her apartment. It was small, but it was hers. It was hers. She hadn't lived in one place for so long since she was a child on Asgard. But now… was it worth it anymore? Did she want to live here, alone?
She glanced down at the tempad she stole from the Citadel. The golden lines seemed to be moving. They did that a lot lately. She assumed it was from all the work Loki was doing behind the scenes. But as she watched them this time, something was different. She wanted to follow them.
Sylvie tossed her head back. She couldn't believe she was actually considering this.
"Fine."
She stood and pressed the gold swirls and thought of Loki, opening the time door. As she walked through, she had to shield her eyes from the bright glowing green.
"Of course he would turn it green," she mumbled.
"What did you expect?" she heard from afar or maybe from within her own head.
"Loki? Where are you?" Sylvie called.
"Over here."
The glowing branches in front of her began to shift and created a path for her to follow.
"Loki, what the hell is all of this? It's like a tree." She gasped. "Did you make Yggdrasil?"
"I believe that I did. Come here, darling. I'd love to see you better."
Sylvie wasn't entirely sure that she wanted to see him better. She didn't want to see what his fate was in all of this. But she followed the sound of his voice anyway.
Finally she saw him. He was sitting amongst it all, just holding on. She looked at his new, enormous, horns and ran to him. "Loki! What the hell are you doing?"
"Balancing. Someone has to keep it all together. To give you all your free will."
"At what cost?"
He didn't answer.
"Loki, at what cost?!"
Loki looked away. "This. This is what I must do. The temporal radiation, it changed me, I think. I've got the power to keep it from being out of control. I said I could rewrite the story and I believe I did."
Sylvie was trying to keep her composure. "God of stories, eh?"
He chuckled humorlessly. "Not much mischief to be had here."
"But why?"
Loki still refused to meet her eyes. "I think you know why."
Sylvie nodded. She did know why. And it was for the same reason that she didn't really want to hear his reason.
"Are you happy?" he asked quietly.
"I thought I was," she replied just as quietly. "But I'm not as sure anymore."
Loki merely nodded.
She took another step and he finally looked back to her. "So, this is your plan? To sit here for all of eternity and just hold onto the branches?"
"It would seem that way."
"Idiot."
"Not the worst I've been called."
"Why didn't you let us make a plan together? Why didn't you talk to me? Or Mobius? Or OB for that matter?"
"There wasn't time."
"Bull shit! You were time travelling! We were in a building that controlled time! You had all the time you needed!"
"Sylvie, I had literally spent centuries trying to work out a solution. I watched Timely and He Who Remains die more times than I could remotely count. I was tired. I saw a fix and I went with it. I wanted to give you the freedom you never had. And now you have it. I don't regret anything."
"Well I do!" she yelled.
His eyes widened, but he said nothing.
"I do," Sylvie repeated. "I should have never let you walk that bridge alone. I should have helped you!"
"I didn't give you much of a choice."
"You're bloody well right you didn't! But I should have tried harder. I should have blasted those doors open and followed!"
"Then you would have let the radiation in and killed everyone there."
"So?! You're the one that matters to me! You are the only other person that I have ever loved!"
Sylvie's mouth snapped shut, just as Loki's eyebrows shot up.
She shook her head. "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have said that."
"Why not? It's not as though I don't love you too." He said it so matter-of-factly that it unnerved her.
"And look where it got you."
"I told you, I don't regret it. Sylvie, I'd do anything for you. Even this."
"I don't want you to."
"Well, it's a bit late for that."
Sylvie scoffed. "Clearly."
"You should probably go. Please Sylvie, find happiness."
"And how do you expect me to do that? Knowing that you are here, alone. Because of me."
"I did it for you, but I also did it for the others. Don't put that that on yourself."
"Damn it, Loki! It's already done! I already feel like shit because of this. I spend every day feeling even more guilty than the day before knowing that you sacrificed something for me. And now I see this! It's infinitely worse than I expected!"
"And what do you want me to do?!" he yelled.
She was taken aback by his tone, but was glad he was finally showing some emotion over this.
"I don't know, Loki! But I want you to be free too! I don't want my freedom if it costs you yours!"
"I made my decision!"
"But I didn't make mine! Once again, someone took the option away from me! I never thought it would be you!"
"You know I didn't do this to hurt you!"
"But you still did."
Loki closed his eyes at her words. She was right. By giving her free will, he actually took the choice away from her.
He lowered his face. "You're right. I'm sorry."
Sylvie finally walked up all the way to him. She put her finger under his chin and forced him to look up at her. "Then let's fix it."
"How?"
"You have the power to keep all this balanced, all on your own. We've combined our powers quite a few times. Maybe I've got enough to tip it over the edge where you can be the guardian of the timelines, but not the conduit."
"But what if we fail and it all comes crashing down?"
"Then all of time ends and at least we were together when it happened."
Loki gave a small laugh. "Leave it to you to minimalize it all."
Sylvie shrugged. "Are you willing to try?"
He paused. After everything he had done, was this worth the risk? He looked into her eyes, brimming with hope, and decided that it absolutely was.
"Fine. What's the plan?"
Sylvie froze. Truthfully, she didn't expect him to agree so readily, so she didn't have a plan prepared yet.
"Well, how are you powering all of this right now?" she asked.
Loki looked around. "I just am. It's like my powers just know what to do."
Sylvie nodded. "Right then. In that case, I'll need your permission to try to enchant you."
"That's never worked in the past."
"You've never given permission."
Loki sighed. "Fine. What then?"
"Well, once I see how the power works, I'm going to use mine to amplify yours. Hopefully it'll be enough that you can let go. It'll still be out of chaos, but it won't be on your shoulders." She looked around at his cape of timelines. "Literally."
He nodded and she closed her eyes as she put her hands to his temples. Instantly she felt a rush of power like she had never experienced before. This was way beyond sharing powers with him to enchant Alioth or blast back the TVA workers hell bent on blowing up branches.
But suddenly she felt it, the exact point in his powers that kept it all in line.
"Loki," she began. "When I tell you to, let go."
"Are you sure about this?"
"Um… yeah?"
"Sylvie, look at me."
She looked down at him.
His face was as serious as she had ever seen. "Kiss me."
"What?"
"If we destroy time, I do not want our only kiss to be one that ends with me back at the TVA. Kiss me."
She moved her hands from his temples to his cheeks. She brought her lips to his and felt another rush of magic. He deepened the kiss as best her could without being able to move much.
And then she thought, "Now. Do it now!" knowing he would hear her thought.
Loki let go of the timelines and wrapped his arms around her waist. A green light burst all around them and when the light returned to normal, all was quiet.
"Did we break time?" Sylvie asked as she looked around.
Loki's eyes were wide as he looked around. "No, it's all surviving on its own." He reached forward and touched a branch. He could see everyone in it thriving. He did the same to several others. "They're all continuing on!"
"You did it!"
"But only with your help." He stood from the throne. "Oh, my back has never been this stiff!"
"Well, spoiled princes usually don't have such uncomfortable chairs," she said with a giggle. She actually giggled.
"Fair enough. I can't believe that worked."
"Of course it did! It had to. So… now what?"
Loki paused. "Well, I don't think I can stay away for long, but for now, I think I'd like to visit those I love, Thor, Mobius, the TVA friends."
"And me?"
"Sylvie, I love you more than I ever thought I could love someone. If you'll have me, I want to try to build a castle here for us. I'll need help maintaining this power for the branches to continue. Do you think that would be ok?"
She held out her hand. "Let's go see everyone. And then we'll come back here and take care of everything."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure that I love you, Loki. And I want to do whatever it takes to make this work." She wiggled her hand for him to take it.
He did and they both smiled. "Ready, love?" he asked as he mentally opened a time door.
"You go, I go."
