Transfixed by the scene, Fu Qiuning stood in place for a long time.

Behind her, the female official was becoming a little impatient. However, she knew that this person was the most favoured person within the palace at that time. Not to mention, this woman was the official wife of a marquis and not someone she could offend. In the end, she suppressed her thoughts and stood in place, waiting until Fu Qiuning was done staring at whatever it was she was staring at, before leading her across the bamboo bridge towards the Jade Lotus Pavilion.

Fu Qiuning looked at the group of women lining up before her and felt a little leap in her heart. She thought: Goodness, what a fine group of beauties. Tsk, tsk, tsk, now this is what the Seven Celestials should be like. Well, there are over 30 celestials standing in front of me now. Some of the ladies have the typical celestial-like looks, while others have a more androgynous, heroic handsome male character in men's clothes. Looks like my Yue opera is now following the Huangmei style where all the characters are played by females. Who knows whether it has anything to do with the local custom or that someone believed that the Marchioness should not be exposed to men outside of the family? Regardless of the reason, looks like I won't have the opportunity to see a real living handsome man in this place.

Well, there's the husband, but what's the use of having a handsome face when the man is so rotten that he emits a sweet sickly smell that attracts fruit flies to feast on his flesh? Still, there is no point in thinking about it. Let's focus on these women for now. Everyone here is a hard-working woman out to make a living with their bodies. With no men around to patronise them, maybe they can go far with the new opera.

With this time in mind, she smiled at the ladies and said, "You are all the best in terms of looks. For today's Huangmei, you will be chosen according to your singing ability. I shall sing two verses first. Whoever sings the best, I will train you for the opera. Understand?"

The 30-odd ladies all said, "Understand."

Fu Qiuning cleared her throat and sang,

"

I ask the crescent moon in the sky,

Who could be compared to my Brother Niulang;

I ask the old maple tree by the fence;

Have you seen flowers like my Jiao'er;

I asked the clear singing brook…

"

The 30 or so female performers were so engrossed in memorising the words that they nearly forgot to properly experience just how beautiful the singing was. What a joke, if they could be chosen by the Marchioness to perform her Huangmei opera and shine during the All Nations Cultural Festival, just what kind of unimaginable rewards would they receive?

After all, no matter what kind of backing they had now, it was best to have something permanent. For women, the best way to secure a backing would be through marriage. So long as they have this success in their name and their skills were acknowledged by the imperial family, their future spouse and family would not dare to mistreat them.

Thus, it was with this sense of furious urgency that the performers memorised the words and melodies.

Fu Qiuning sang only once, and then had the girls sing the verses one after another. At first, she frowned. However, as the later girls sang, her eyes brightened. One after another, she selected the singers she felt were right for the opera.

Naturally, the ones chosen were excited, and the ones who were not chosen were saddened. Others were dissatisfied: After all, they were all gifted in looks and talent, so why were they not chosen? Was bribery involved? That can't be, ah. Didn't this woman just arrive at the palace?

Or, had the chosen ones bribed her earlier on? Come to think of it, this woman was the shu-born daughter of the Zhenjiang Heir. Moreover, the entire capital knew that she was neglected by her husband from the moment she was married and only just recently managed to somehow claw her way back into his favour. This kind of woman must be both cunning and greedy for base monetary compensation.

Once Fu Qiuning declared that the selection process had closed, one of the unchosen ones boldly stepped forward to say, "Please wait, Madam. Surely this selection is unfair?"

Having expected this, Fu Qiuning raised her eyebrows and said, "In what way is it unfair?" she had already heard all kinds of declarations of 'unfairness' from the various children she had taught, and from the parents too. So, she was curious to hear what a professional performer, a grown woman at that, have to complain about.

The female officer who had escorted Fu Qiuning hastily stepped forward to scold the performer, but Fu Qiuning waved her away, "Let me hear it. I am interested to know."

Feeling a little bold at Fu Qiuning's words, the woman said in a serious voice, "Of the ten of us standing here, six of us had to sing first. Naturally, this is unfair. Because we sang first, the ones behind us got to hear the song one more time, therefore their performance sounded better. Isn't this unfair? Isn't giving them more time to listen to the song giving them an advantage?"

Fu Qiuning was speechless. She thought: what is this broken logic? The ones in front sang first and were at a disadv`antage? The ones that sang later have an advantage? There are over 30 of you and only the very first one got to listen to me sing once. Six of you who 'sang first' got eliminated, so what? At the very least, one of the eliminated ones got to listen to the same song at least five times. What is this broken-headed shit?

The woman who had questioned Fu Qiuning lifted her chin a little more. Fu Qiuning could see the stubbornness in her and knew that this idiot probably didn't even know what the heck she was talking about. With a sigh, she said, "Fine, you are saying that it is unfair that you are eliminated because you were made to 'sing first'. What do you expect me to do for you? What is fair for you?"

"I- I should sing later…"

"Excellent, you there," she picked out one of the chosen candidates and beckoned her over. "I shall sing two more lines of the song. She will sing first, and then you." Without waiting for any more idiots to speak, she opened her mouth and sang,

"

The gentleman faces a flower, a flower,

A couple strolls down a paddy field

A fallen seed sprouted…

"

Then, she looked at the selected woman expectantly. A little flustered, the girl flushed and bit her lip for a moment before stiffening her spine and started singing.

There were some omissions here and there, but the song was beautifully sung nevertheless.

Fu Qiuning nodded, "Good, now you."

The protesting girl pursed her lips. Finally, she started singing. Partway through she stopped and flushed red.

Fu Qiuning raised her eyebrow at her, letting the silence build. Finally, she said, "You have heard the previous song many times, would you like to sing it again to make sure that I am not biased?"

"This…"

"It doesn't matter how many times you hear a song. The range of a person's voice is limited. While it can be trained, I don't have the time to train anyone now. Therefore, I chose singers with the necessary voice range that I needed. Not to mention, I have no reason to pick someone who would fight with me every step of the way when the time before the Festival is limited."

Finally, the performers that were not chosen withdrew. The female officer stepped forward to say flatteringly, "Since yesterday, word has spread within the palace about the Marchioness' special play. I had not believed it at first, after all, how many songs that were described as celestial music eventually fell short when heard in person? Unexpectedly, my ears were blessed by Madam's singing. I fear that even the celestials in the sky do not have the blessing to have such music in the heavens."

Fu Qiuning coughed into her handkerchief at this over-the-top praise. Wow, ancient people sure know how to flatter.

Is this why Jin Fengju has such a swollen head? Come to think of it, Jin Ming's ability to praise and tease his master was excellent too. That steward not only flatters his master, but also knows how to throw in some jabs to make sure he is seen as more than just an ordinary sycophant. She must learn from him.

She was still pondering over various thoughts when she saw some people walking over with musical instruments.

Fu Qiuning frowned. Wait, does she have to sing everything for the musicians now?

The female official next to her hurried forward to speak with the musicians' female official. Then, the whole band came over and Fu Qiuning realised that they were all female players.

"… …" Well, it's either female players or eunuchs in the inner court. What was she expecting?

The musician's female official came up to Fu Qiuning to introduce herself, "This one is Official Lin. These are Musician Zhang and Musician Liu. The Musicians Zhang and Liu had already discussed it with this Official Lin, from now on, they will compose the music for Madam's play. After the preliminary rehearsal, they will then later invite male musicians in. What does Madam think?"

Fu Qiuning nodded, "That is fine."

The two musicians sat down. One of them had a pipa in her hand, while the other had a paper and brush as well as a little portable table that one of the musicians set up on the floor. The rest of the 'band' sat behind the two named musicians, although Fu Qiuning was not entirely sure who was Zhang and who was Liu.

Once the two had settled down, they looked up at Fu Qiuning expectantly. One of them said, "We are ready, Madam, please sing."

Fu Qiuning nodded and sang a couple of verses. All the musicians listened carefully, some of them, including the pipa player, had their eyes closed. The pipa player was even swaying slightly. At the end of the song, the pipa player paused for a moment. Then, her fingers moved and it was as though Fu Qiuning's song was being sung by the instrument. Even Fu Qiuning was transfixed by her skill.

At the end of the song, the pipa player looked at Fu Qiuning questioningly. Unable to help herself, Fu Qiuning clapped her hands. "Wonderful, as expected of a palace musician. The music is brought to life by your playing, now I understand the term celestial-like music."

The pipa player flushed, "It is Madam who is talented, this lowly musician merely imitates your voice…"

Meanwhile, the musician with the notepaper was furiously writing. Fu Qiuning saw that it was all in Chinese characters. She nearly went cross-eyed looking at the words that were being rapidly jotted down. Good grief, and Jin Fengju expected her, a modern person who was only familiar with the number system and the western beansprouts, to do this?!

While they were speaking, music was being plucked or strummed as the other musicians moved their hands as though they could not help themselves. The cacophony of notes in the air was chaotic and melodic at the same time, reminding her of the times before the start of an opera when musicians practised their music.

Lin Shile had nothing but praise for Fu Qiuning. On the other hand, Fu Qiuning was busy directing the girls while the little band crowded around themselves and twittered excitedly over the new music obviously brimming with ideas on how to put a whole orchestra together. Fu Qiuning left them to it while she supervised the performers. As a singing teacher, she should concentrate on what she does best. Dancing and the role setting would come after she had seen what they could do.

In a blink of an eye, noon came.

A maid from Chengci Palace arrived to invite the Marchioness over for a meal. The performers and musicians all left after saluting Fu Qiuning. Fu Qiuning followed the maid back to the Chengci palace. She found Old Madam Jin and Madam Jiang still loitering inside the palace. Looks like they had clung to Fu Qiuning's favour to bum off a meal with the Empress Dowager at the palace.

After lunch, Old Madam Jin and Madam Jiang left, but Fu Qiuning returned to the Jade Lotus Pavilion to continue working. By the time the sun was sinking down the red skies, the performers had learned two sets of songs.

As for the musicians, Fu Qiuning left them to do their own thing. Some practised in a corner on their own, while others sat by the side to watch as Fu Qiuning trained the singers, their fingers moving or tapping out the music unconsciously. It was not a bad atmosphere to be in. It brought to mind her youth when she was one of the hopeful performers aiming to one day stand on a stage before a grand audience.

Thanks to the diligence and professionalism of the palace performers, Fu Qiuning only had to coach them a little. Even so, when the Empress Dowager tried to keep her back, she lowered her head, practically radiating anxiousness as she thought about the children at home.

There was no way she was going to exchange the vixens she knew for this boss of all vixens. Instead, she bleated pathetically about how anxious she was about the children at home, until finally, the Empress Dowager allowed her to go home.

After bidding farewell to the Empress Dowager and returning home, Fu Qiuning met with Old Madam Jin and Madam Jiang first before returning to Elegant Mansion. Aunt Yu was there to greet her with a smile, "A single trip takes a full day just like that. Really, even the royal family shouldn't keep someone this busy. My heart was hanging all day, while Yu Jie and Jian Feng get to follow you. While it wasn't so bad for them., it was only me who suffered. Tomorrow, have the two of them stay to look after the house while I accompany and attend to you. You must be served by someone you can rely on."

Yu Jie and Jian Feng laughed in reply, "Go ahead, you'll understand once you're there. Truly, entering the palace feels like descending into a space as deep as the sea. Did you think we were always by Madam's side? Don't be silly, we only saw her late in the evening after spending the whole day being stifled in a room. We had nothing to do, but all that idleness made us restless. If you think this is a good job, you may try it tomorrow. We would much rather stay in the Elegant Mansion, watching the junior maids clean up the courtyard. You are soft-faced and kind-hearted, so you might not be able to tame them."

Fu Qiuning rolled her eyes at the maids' antics. She clapped her hands for attention and said, "Right, enough of that. Has anyone stopped by when I was not at home?"

Yu Jie said, "The Young Marquis came by specifically to see Madam. When he saw that you were not here, he wanted to enter the palace and personally escort you back. However, Qiu Xia suddenly came over with news that the mistress of Clear Soft Pavilion was suffering from recurring chest pain. Therefore, the Master had no choice but to head to Clear Soft Pavilion. Before leaving, he bade this maid to ask when Madam plans to visit the palace residence to fetch Madam Concubine."

Yu Jie's eyes practically sparkled as she relayed the message. Naturally, she knew the 'Madam Concubine' in question would be their Madam's mother. Look how wonderful their Master was to their Madam! Is there any of the other women in the harem, no, has any other women ever been treated so well as their very own Madam? Isn't their Young Marquis the absolute best of the best?

Fu Qiuning recalled her conversation with Jin Fengju the previous night and couldn't help but sigh, Perhaps later tomorrow after I have put in the hours for the performers. It would be best to pick her up as soon as possible before the Zhenjiang Palace people have recovered their senses."

Aunt Yu smiled and said, "Madam Concubine will be delighted to know that you have been thinking of her. She must not have had many opportunities to move about after entering the palace. This would be a great opportunity for her to come out and experience the outside world a little. Oh yes, Concubine Huo also stopped by. She said that she noticed that Madam liked those Western pastries last time, so she brought another box. However, seeing that you were not here, she left without leaving a message."

Fu Qiuning was wary, "What medicine is Concubine Huo carrying in her gourd? Why has she suddenly become so close to me? If it's about sending pastries, any servant or matron could have done it. But she came herself. Both she and Concubine Xu used to be competitive, and even Jiang'shi might not have been able to suppress her in conversation. So why is she being so humble before me now?"

Aunt Yu laughed and said, "Perhaps it is due to Madam's benevolent nature and, seeing how the Master doted upon you, Concubine Huo wishes to climb up on this big tree. Who could say?"

Fu Qiuning shook her head slowly and said, "Not necessarily…"

Before she could finish her sentence, a childish voice sounded from outside the door, "Aunt Yu, what do you know? When someone offers kindness for no reason, they plan to either rob or trick you. When you next see that Concubine Huo, just sweep her away with your biggest broom."

Jin Zhenyi strutted in ahead of the twins and his sister, Jin Xiunan. His three siblings all wore a look of baffled exasperation on their faces.

After the children gave their greetings, Fu Qiuning turned to Jin Zhenyi. She smiled and said, Regardless of the truth, appearance must be maintained. She is still your Third Mother, you know?"

Jin Zhenyi rolled his eyes and retorted, "Mother, I don't believe you don't want to chase Concubine Huo away with a broom. When you lived in the Night Breeze Pavilion before, didn't you want to avoid trouble? But now, trouble comes knocking every day. Don't tell me you like them coming here all the time?"

Ignoring the smart-mouthed child, Fu Qiuning turned to Jin Changfeng and asked, "Has Brother Yi been praised by the teacher at school today? Isn't he being a little too cocky?" She glanced over at all the children and lowered her voice, "Listen here, you should know not to break the bridge before crossing the river.

Understand that I am not trying to scare you, but how long has it been since your mother has been sent to the village? Beware of your words and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Even here. Perhaps I should say, especially here."

Jin Zhenyi fell silent, his eyes were filled with conflicting emotions. Fu Qiuning sighed to herself. Adults may think that children do not understand what is happening around them, but as a teacher of children, she could tell that children understand a whole lot more than adults would like to believe. In this noble household where superficial harmony has to be kept up and hidden motives guarded against, children grow up even faster and develop cunning out of sheer self-protection. It would be foolish to imagine any children in this kind of dirty household to have any innocence left after the age of three.

While she was lost in thought, Jin Changfeng said, "Today, the teacher said that Second Brother has shown improvement in both his calligraphy and studies. That is why he is so happy."

Fu Qiuning nodded, "That is excellent, keep up the good work.

Remember, everything you learn, whether it is at school or outside, be it scholarly learning or martial arts, all belong to you, and no one can take it from you." Then, she looked at Aunt Yu and said, "Is the food ready? If it is, let us eat first. I may return even later in the future, so there is no need to wait for me from now on. Make sure the children have their meals on time. Just keep some food for me when I return."

After Aunt Yu accepted the order, Fu Qiuning continued, "Speaking of which, why are you still here? You are still a newly wedded person. I don't want your mother-in-law to accuse you of neglecting your household. Yu Jie, have the kitchen pack some dishes and rice for Aunt Yu to bring home. As for you, there is no need for you to come early tomorrow. Elegant Mansion has more maids than we know what to do with. I shall also promote two maids into senior positions, so there is no need for you to be here all the time."

Aunt Yu accepted the order agreeably and left. After their meal, Fu Qiuning oversaw the children's homework.

She noticed that whenever Jin Fengju looked over the children's work, there would always be an inevitable air of gloom over the children after the Fengju Storm. Therefore, she had to make sure he did not ruin their self-confidence beyond repair. It would be good for Jin Zhenyi to receive praise from a third party and know that Jin Fengju's approval is not everything.

"Come now, bring me your homework, all of you."

When Jin Zhenyi and Jin Xiunan first arrived, they hardly set foot into Fu Qiuning's personal rooms aside from mealtimes. Now, however, they would enter freely to spend time there whenever they could, just like the twins. Although Fu Qiuning had told them that there was no need for them to greet her formally every day, they had started coming in to give their greetings before breakfast along with Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao. After breakfast, the four children would set out for school together. Although the time spent together was relatively short, it was clear that all four children had gotten a lot closer.

Perhaps due to the fatigue from the day, Fu Qiuning slept soundly that night. When Yu Jie woke her up early the next morning, she was so groggy she could hardly open her eyes. It was not until she had splashed water on her face that she could fully open her eyes.

"Madam rarely sleeps so soundly like this. At first, the servants and Jian Feng hesitated to wake you up, but thinking that you have to go to the palace to pick up Madam Concubine, and deal with palace matters, they had to harden their hearts. Jian Feng is a cunning one, she doesn't step forward in situations like these and instead pushes the responsibility of waking you on me. She said that since I have been with Madam for so long, any morning temper you have won't be directed at me. Madam, listen, see how smart she is?"

Yu Jie continued to chatter on and on with an ingratiating smile on her face. Fu Qiuning eyed her longest-serving maid and could not help but sigh to herself.

This maid had been with Fu Qiuning since before her transmigration and was the one who had endured the longest. However, she was also one of the first to jump up for favour when Jin Fengju extended his gold leaf-laden hand. Not that she could blame the maid, who could be truly loyal to a master who could not even pay their servants a proper wage?

"You will be twenty this year, right? It's about time you get married," said Fu Qiuning off-handedly. "Unless you wish to stay by my side until you become an old maid."

Yu Jie gasped dramatically, "Is Madam really annoyed with me? It wasn't as if this maid woke you up early on purpose. Wasn't it because there was no other choice? Why bring up such things now and talk about them? It's so embarrassing." She even stomped her foot and pouted.

Fu Qiuning thought: Yes, somehow, everyone in this household is addicted to fits of dramatics. Jin Zhenyi is just a little bit more obvious than most.

Eventually, the children came by to pay their respects. Jin Changfeng dithered for a little while before saying, "Mother, will you be going to the palace again today? When will the task be over? Mother even has bruises under your eyes. How can anyone be ordered to labour like this?"

Fu Qiuning smiled faintly, "Bruises? I suppose, considering how I am being beaten from all sides to work on this thing, these dark circles could be considered bruises. We only have four months left until the All Nations Cultural Festival, and I have to teach a group of performers how to sing and dance, ensure the orchestra plays the right music and so forth. Fortunately, the performers are very motivated, and the musicians are excited and self-sufficient. Otherwise, I really don't know how I would survive this task.

There is no need to worry about me. Focus on your own studies and be sure to stay out of trouble. Step back when you should, but never let anyone cross your bottom line. As brothers and sisters living under my name, you must be united against outsiders. Keep your private quarrels within these walls, is that clear?"

Jin Zhenyi grumbled, "In the end, Mother just doesn't want us to make trouble for you." He sounded belligerent, but still addressed her as Mother, so no one took his mutterings seriously.

"There are times when we have to deal with a problem right away to avoid a bigger mess in the future. However, it takes time and experience to know which trouble needs to be dealt with immediately, and which ones will dissipate when ignored," Fu Qiuning said with a mysterious smile. "It would be best if you practice recognising them now."

After the children had left for school, she changed into her palace outfit and was about to leave when a chorus of "Greetings, Young Marquis" and "Young Marquis has arrived" was heard. She sighed to herself: Well, here's a problem that cannot be dealt with immediately nor dissipate when ignored.

Before she could lament her life further, Jin Fengju pulled the beaded curtain aside and entered.

"Is Lord Husband not attending court today?" Fu Qiuning asked with growing trepidation.

To her not-surprise, Jin Fengju beamed and said, "Thanks to you, I too, have gained some benefits. Yesterday, I casually mentioned to the Emperor how I needed to pick up my mother-in-law today and was unexpectedly granted a day off. This shows just how high your status has become." He was positively grinning by the end of his little boast as he picked up one of the remaining two White Sugar Sponge Cakes on the table.

"Haven't you had enough to eat at Clear Soft Pavilion?" Fu Qiuning asked pointedly.

She knew her question was a mistake when Jin Fengju's grin turned into a smirk, "No, no, it's just that this cake looked particularly delicious, so I just had to have a piece. Still, I do enjoy those cream-filled pastries. I shall see if I can catch myself a foreigner these next few days and have them make these at our estate too."

Fu Qiuning paused, "Do you think foreigners are livestock? 'Catching one' indeed. Concubine Huo already said that the foreigner is a distinguished guest of their family…"

Before she could finish speaking, she caught Jin Fengju visibly snorting and rolling his eyes in the mirror. She knew that it was probably the 'noble aristocrat' in him looking down on the mainly mercantile nature of the Huo family. It would do no one any good to talk about Concubine Huo anymore, so she changed the subject by saying, "I shall be leaving for the palace now."

Jin Fengju said, "Yes, yes, you go to the palace immediately. Even as the Emperor bestowed this unexpected free day for me, I could tell that the old man values this All Nations Cultural Festival too much. You must show diligence to win his favour. Leave everything else to me. This way, your father and grandfather will also know just how highly regarded you are by the imperial family. After all, with me running errands on your behalf, they would have so many concerns. With so many concerns occupying their mind, they won't easily offend us. Not even if we ask for your mother.

Not to mention, I have dropped a few hints to the Emperor's ear about how long since your last visit to your mother and how, coincidentally, right at the time you meant to visit your dear mother, you have now become so busy with this event. Ah, your plans to visit after the Dragon Boat Festival are now in shambles, what to do? Naturally, the Emperor praised you for your filial piety, and, goodness, in order to not distract you from your diligence in training the new opera troupe, isn't it better to have your mother stay at our estate for a few days? If the Zhenjiang Palace still refuses to release your mother, we could even petition the Emperor to come up with an imperial edict. Once she's at our estate, who would care how long she stays with us in the end? What do you think? Isn't this the most brilliant of schemes?"

Jin Fengju was looking at her with sparkling eyes, clearly expecting praise for his brilliant brainwork. Fu Qiuning had zoned out in the middle of his speech, recognising the moment when Jin Fengju was about to go on and on about his own great achievements. When his fan finally snapped closed in a flourish, signalling the end of his self-praising, she politely clapped and said, "There can be no better plan than this, I am sure. I must thank Lord Husband for his great benevolence, consideration and-"

Jin Fengju cut in to modestly say, "What is there to thank? Such a small matter is nothing. No need to make a big deal of it."

Fu Qiuning thought: If it was such a small thing, what was that incredibly long performance about?

However, there was no point in confronting a delusional person about their weird behaviours. Instead of wasting her time, Fu Qiuning headed out for the palace while Jin Fengju scuttled over to Health & Longevity Court.

No matter what, he must complete this great mission. Fu Qiuning asked for so little and could not be moved by things like gold, favour or status. Therefore, his only way to gain her favour was to bring her mother into the estate in hopes that this mother-in-law would help improve their relationship in the future…

At Health & Longevity Court, he found Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying, as well as a few others already there. He took the opportunity to inform them that he would be fetching Fu Qiuning's mother to their estate.

Old Madam Jiang already knew that Fu Qiuning had spent most of her girlhood in the village with her mother and knew that this woman must have been extremely unhappy at Zhenjiang Palace's inner court. If the relationship between the two families had been good, Fu Qiuning's achievements would have been a great celebration for both families. Instead, the poor woman must have been caught between placating her husband and supporting her daughter. Therefore, Old Madam Jin readily agreed.

As for Madam Jiang, although she despised Fu Qiuning's mother for her low status and lack of favour, she considered herself a woman of the world who, although had grown up in luxury and opulence, was neither snobbish nor arrogant. After all, no genuine worshipper of Buddha could be considered a snobbish person, right? Furthermore, though Fu Qiuning had been in the spotlight these days, she had not yet displayed any signs of arrogance with which she could find fault. Thus, although Madam Jiang was biased towards her niece, being unable to find fault with Fu Qiuning meant that she could not say much about Jin Fengju's decision.

Jiang Wanying was unable to suppress her annoyance and it showed on her face as a brittle smile as she said, "Lord Husband is truly considerate. I truly envy Elder Sister. If I can be treated with such attention one day, it would be worth dying immediately."

Jin Fengju chuckled, "For Wanying to say this, you must be feeling homesick too. How about I accompany you back in the next two days? Or, perhaps you would like to have my aunt stay for a few days as well? That would be good too. Mother would have someone to keep her company."

He had casually mentioned bringing his aunt in to make it look like he was not openly favouring one wife over the other, but Jiang Wanying took his words seriously. She thought: Mother is a titled noblewoman. If she was here, we could brace against whatever influence that Fu-woman's mother would bring. The Old Madam is already close to a hundred years old, and once she is gone, the one in power would be my aunt. At that point, if we still could not drive that woman away, could she still enjoy good days with all the power in my family's hands?

Thus, with her calculations all done, Jiang Wanying smiled slightly and said, "May I consider this my Cousin's consideration for me? In that case, I shall thank you in advance. Do please don't take your words back later and completely forget our little promise."

Jin Fengju looked at Jiang Wanying in surprise. Old Madam Jin and Madam Jiang were also a little shocked. Madam Jiang frowned and said, "What is this nonsense? Have you considered your mother's status? Why would you want to have her stay at our estate? If you truly miss her, you can go home for a few days."

Jiang Wanying also knew this was socially improper. Her mother was an imperially titled noblewoman; however, she had already painted herself into a corner in her eagerness to take power out of that woman's hands. Therefore, she strengthened her smile and replied, "Aunt is right in saying that my mother's status is high. Even so, our family's status is not low either, ah. We regularly receive friends and relatives who stay with us for ten days or half a month. This is just a two-day stay. Surely my mother would be delighted for the opportunity for a leisurely stay? Aunt would also have company with you as well. I do worry that Mother would fall ill from being stuck back at the estate all day."

Madam Jiang knew what Jiang Wanying was scheming. She wanted to bring her mother over to assert her dominance over Fu Qiuning and say a few words to the family on Jiang Wanying's behalf. She thought: Silly child, why are you being so persistent? Do you not know that I have no fondness for that surname Fu? Even without your mother, I will not stand for her presence. The one who favours her is your husband. Would your mother's visit be able to change his mind? What kind of nonsense is this? You had better spend your time thinking up ways to win back your husband's heart.

Even so, Madam Jiang refrained from speaking up since Jiang Wanying continued to persist in her decision. Not to mention, her arguments were sound, and so long as her sister-in-law did not mind her own status, was there any rule against letting relatives stay for a few days? In the end, the matter was settled just like that. When word got out, Jin Fengju's public reputation rose even more among the elites as being a considerate and filial husband and son-in-law.

As for Jin Fengju, he thought back to the time he last saw Qiuning's mother and recalled that she was a most honest and unassuming person. Even if she came over to stay at Elegant Mansion, his cousin, being a lady of good breeding and elegance, would not unnecessarily bring her own mother to humiliate someone else. Surely, this could only end in the most harmonious of scenes?

With this conclusion in his heart, though he was still a little annoyed at Jiang Wanying, he decided to suppress this feeling and leave things at that. It was time to head for the Zhenjiang Palace.

King Zhenjiang and his son were already quite annoyed. When news came that Jin Fengju had arrived at their doorstep, the two of them became even more upset. The Zhenjiang Heir sneered, "Has that brat purposely come to mock us? I refuse to meet with him, chase him out."

However, his father's stern authoritative tone snapped, "Useless thing, no matter what, he is still a young marquis. The person most highly regarded by the Emperor himself. If you throw him out, who would that impress? The Emperor?"

Fu Qinghe immediately lowered his head in silence, not daring to speak. His father slowly continued, "Anyway, let us hear him out first. If it is not a major issue, there is also no need to offend him. It looks like our main support may not be as sturdy as we had hoped. Perhaps, in time, we may need a secondary support." With that, he instructed the messenger, "Go tell the Young Marquis to wait for a moment. We will personally welcome him."

Once the messenger left, Fu Qinghe turned to his father, saying, "Father, what nonsense are you speaking? We are already at odds with Jing Dukedom, so how can we still rely on him for support? If he doesn't throw stones upon us after we fell into a well, we would have to burn a heap of incense in thanks. Has Father forgotten how we used Qiuning to humiliate him in the past? I fear that even now, there are people at the ducal estate still grinding their teeth at this grudge. We already have nowhere to retreat to and no other choice."

King Zhenjiang sighed, stood up, and straightened his collar. In a somewhat melancholic tone, he said, "How would I not be well aware of what you're saying? But… sigh, Prince Hong's side might not be dependable anymore. Should we just sit around and wait for our deaths? Though we had a falling out with Jing Dukedom, isn't Qiuning flourishing there now? Sending her there was an insult, yet now that she is thriving there, the Young Marquis might even appreciate us for marrying her to him."

Even Fu Qinghe, who had always regarded his father with deep respect and love, with a face thicker than a city wall, couldn't help but feel his cheeks burn upon hearing Fu Shanlin's words. He stuttered, "I-if things could turn out as Father envisions, that would be best. I am just afraid…"

He could not continue. Seeing his father's face with lined so many wrinkles, he sighed inwardly and thought: Well, the old man is getting old. If he likes to dream a bit, let him have his dreams.

Father and son continued their conversation while they made themselves presentable. Right as they were about to go to the main gate to welcome Jin Fengju, they saw Jin Fengju already approaching the study with wide steps, accompanied by the palace steward. Upon seeing them, this handsome and finely-dressed Young Marquis greeted them from a distance with a cupped fist salute and a hearty smile, "How could this lowly official dare to trouble the King and the Heir to come out to greet me? Not chasing me away already is generous enough."

As he spoke, he ascended the steps. Under the morning sun, his spirits were high. He truly was dashing and unconstrained, embodying an air of gracefulness. Though Fu Shanlin and Fu Qinghe secretly resented and admired him, they still had to admit that this Jin Fengju was indeed very charming to look at. No wonder hestill occupied the position of the most handsome man in the capital even after having so many children under his knees. Indeed, there was no man who could rival his charisma.

Fu Shanlin burst into hearty laughter and said, "Fengju, you're being too formal with your words. Besides, now that you're here, what do we care about being a lower or higher official? Aren't we all family?" After saying that, he invited Jin Fengju into the study and instructed a maid, "Bring the First Daybreak Snow tea that I received a few days ago and brew a good pot."

First Daybreak Snow was also an extremely valuable type of Longjing tea. Jin Fengju smiled slightly, seated himself, and said, "King and Heir need not trouble yourselves, I only came here because I have a matter to discuss today. There are still matters to attend to in my government office and I cannot afford to delay here. I have to return after I have finished this matter."

Fu Shanlin chuckled, "Indeed, His Majesty's favour towards you means that your responsibilities naturally become heavier. Speak then, what is the matter? What could trouble Fengju to come here personally?"

Jin Fengju smiled and replied, "King and Heir should already be aware of Qiuning's responsibilities. In fact, the All Nations Cultural Festival is something that weighs greatly on my mind. Upon seeing His Majesty's distress, I hastened to mention Qiuning's skills in Huangmei Opera. When I returned home, I suffered a round of complaints from her. I tried many ways to placate Qiuning, thumped my chest and gave all kinds of guarantees to appease her just to coax a smile. Finally, I found the one thing that would persuade her to even look my way. Thus, I came here, in hopes that the King and Heir will assist me."

Both Fu Shanlin and Fu Qinghe were bewildered, "What are you saying? How could that child be so ungrateful? Just by recommending her, Fengju had granted that child immense honour and prestige. Not to mention, didn't she receive a noble title for this opera? What is there to complain about? That child is too outrageous."

Jin Fengju hastily beamed, "We mustn't blame Qiuning. She has her reasons. These days, Qiuning has been thinking about her mother a lot. However, before the Dragon Boat Festival, there were too many chaotic matters that occupied her time. Both King and Heir should also be aware of some of the issues we have been facing. We did not have a moment to spare then. Originally, we had planned for Qiuning to return and stay for a few days after the festival. Unexpectedly, I had to push her out into the limelight.

King and Heir should also understand that the All Nations Cultural Festival is of significant importance and that His Majesty values it greatly. Qiuning is busy teaching the songstresses and dancers about the operas and even has to aid the orchestra in composing music. How would there be any time for her to return here for a visit?

The other day, I dropped some hints to His Majesty, hoping she could take a few days off. However, my request was plainly rebuffed. His Majesty stated that since Qiuning longs for her mother and is afraid of neglecting her teaching duties, it would be better for her mother to go to her and stay for a few days at the Duke of Jing's estate instead. The affairs in the imperial palace require her careful attention and there should be no distractions at all.

Thus, this is why I had no choice but to come today. Originally, I planned to bring Qiuning along, but who knew that the palace could not spare her at all? Time is of the essence, and nothing can be delayed even for a moment. Qiuning simply could not spare the time, or rather, the imperial palace could not spare her the time. During the short while I was standing at the Zhenjiang palace gates, I am afraid that Qiuning had already entered the imperial palace and started instructing."

After his long and dramatic explanation, both Fu Shanlin and Fu Qinghe couldn't help but exchange glances with each other.

Wasn't this fellow just a tad long-winded and dramatic? To the point of hysteria? This crazy fellow managed to express his words at length and even managed to invoke the Emperor's name, leaving them not even an inch to refuse. Since they were from the opposite faction, they naturally would not want Jin Fengju to succeed in whatever scheme he had up in his sleeves, but… looking at this emotional and slightly hysterical person, it may well be possible that he was indeed desperately in love with Fu Qiuning and was at the end of his wits.

After a brief silence, Fu Shanlin laughed and said, "It is Qiuning who is considerate. The All Nations Cultural Festival is indeed an extraordinary event, and as the leader of a glorious civilisation with the most number of brilliant scholars and elites, if we allow those barbaric nations to surpass us, wouldn't the entire world laugh at us? Considering its immense significance, Qinghe, go order the servants to help Qiuning's mother pack up. Have her follow Fengju back to the Jing Dukedom."

Fu Qinghe was taken aback for a moment, not expecting his father to agree so quickly. Although Jin Fengju's speech just now was rather… passionate, sending his woman to the Jing Dukedom, even if justified, was still against custom. Refusing might still be an option. However, thinking of Fu Shanlin's earlier words, he felt he could understand matters a little.

Even so, how could he be willing to allow Jin Fengju just take someone from his harem away just like that? Where would he place the face of Zhenjiang Palace later? Just pick someone up? This brat was clearly here to settle some old score about them forcing Qiuning on him back then.

Fu Qinghe pretended to think for a moment before reluctantly smiled and said, "You may be right, it's just… this particular concubine of mine has not set foot outside of our palace since the day she married in. If she were to leave the palace to stay at my daughter's place, would it not invite ridicule? If Qiuning truly misses her mother, then have her return to stay here for a few days. After all, going from here to the imperial palace is also quite convenient."

Jin Fengju raised an eyebrow and glanced at Fu Qinghe. Although his face still wore a smile, his eyes gained a hint of sharpness. Slowly, he said, "Is that so? Strange, why did I hear Qiuning say that she and my mother-in-law lived in the village for many years? Now that Heir is saying this, I'm really not sure which is true." When Fu Qinghe's expression changed, he smiled slightly and continued, "Well, no matter. What happened, has happened. If circumstances had not changed, Qiuning would naturally come to stay at the palace to see her mother. However, with Qiuning leaving early for the palace and returning late, the children could barely catch a glimpse of her face and look forward to these brief, fleeting interactions.

If she were to return to the palace, they would not even have these fleeting glimpses. Not to mention, even if she does come here, she would still be leaving early and returning late. How could the children bear it?"

He sighed dramatically, fanning his face. After a while, he picked up his teacup with a smile, took a sip and praised, "Indeed, this is very good tea."

Fu Qinghe's lungs were about to explode from anger. He thought: You stinky brat, spare me your nonsense. Are those even my daughter's own children? You're talking as if they're not your offspring as well. Just as he was about to retort, Jin Fengju spoke with an obviously fake smile, "Moreover, the whole capital knows that we are in-laws, but in recent years, there had been rumours that simply would not disappear. It is hard to say that these words haven't tickled His Majesty's ears. Heir, please give it some thought. If His Majesty knows that I came to fetch someone but couldn't, and instead, let Qiuning go and stay with her maternal family, his discomfort might be secondary. The most crucial matter is that His Majesty might start getting suspicious. If the old man starts believing that the King and Heir have intentions against our Jing Dukedom, then, even if this son-in-law argues until he is out of breath, it might be to no avail."

This was the first time he had referred to himself as 'son-in-law' since stepping into Zhenjiang Palace. However, there was not even a hint of respect in his tone. Even though he still wore a smile on his face, occasional glimpses of sharpness flashed in his eyes, revealing an air of arrogance. While Fu Shanlin and Fu Qinghe were itching with resentment, they could not help but be secretly shocked.

"What Fengju said makes sense. Qinghe, do not worry so much," Fu Shanlin finally smiled slightly. He sighed inwardly, thinking: My son, even if you are dissatisfied, what can you do? Do not forget that this brat just mentioned that His Majesty knows of this matter, and His Majesty personally passed down orders. Even if you do not let him do as he pleases today, do you think the face that you are rejecting is his? You are rejecting His Majesty's face, ah. Isn't that seeking death? Compared to not letting go of the minor face-losing matter of a concubine being taken to Jing Dukedom, isn't letting His Majesty harbour resentment far worse?

Today's incident is a loss for us either way. Perhaps this brat already has already long had this plan in mind. Now, we can only choose the lesser of two evils. Moreover, it is possible that His Majesty is personally seeking justice for the slap we gave Fengju at Jing Dukedom back then. Let it be, let it be.

Fu Shanlin had spent decades struggling in court battles, so he naturally saw things more clearly than his son. Indeed, after hearing that, Jin Fengju immediately smiled and said, "The estate has prepared everything, there is no need to pack anything. Many thanks to the King and Heir." He raised his hand in a gesture of respect and took another light sip of First Daybreak Snow tea.

Fu Qinghe was furious, but since things had reached that point, he could only wear a smile on the surface. He sent someone to inform Yu'shi. After quite some time had passed, seeing that there was still no reply, he furrowed his brows and stood up, saying, "Why hasn't anyone come yet? These servants are already lazy, but now they seemed to be deliberately dragging their feet."

Seeing Jin Fengju leisurely enjoying his tea, Fu Qinghe felt a sudden anger rising in his heart. Although the other person was indeed elegant and dashing, in his eyes, it was far from pleasing. He simply wished he could send off this adversary as soon as possible.

As for Jin Fengju, how could he not be anxious?

This was the one mission that Fu Qiuning had entrusted him to! The only thing that she had ever asked him for! Though he appeared relaxed on the surface, he was actually sweating under the gazes of the two old Fu geezers. Every time he looked at them, it reminded him of that time back then. Resentment and gratitude roiled inside him, confusing him in turns.

He was resentful of being married to the Zhengjiang King's granddaughter; he was glad to finally have Qiuning look at him. He hated the feeling of helplessness when forced to marry that woman; he was grateful to Fu Qiuning for taking in the twins and raising them well. He- he-

He stood up and said, "Indeed, it is no longer early. I still have matters to attend to at the government office. Since my mother-in-law is someone who pays attention to detail and must have a lot of things to pack, Zhenjiang Heir, why not escort me to the inner court? I shall personally explain matters to my mother-in-law and coax her to travel lightly so that we may set off right away. How about it? It would not only be convenient for us, but would also save Zhenjiang Palace some trouble."

Fu Qinghe was even more annoyed. He thought: This stinky brat! He is the esteemed Young Marquis, yet he refers to a mere concubine as 'mother-in-law'. He calls me Zhenjiang Heir', but has yet to call me 'father-in-law' even once. Even if your position now is different from the past, aren't you being a bit too arrogant?

While he was fuming, he heard his father say calmly, "Since Fengju says so, Qinghe, escort him to the inner court. Women can be a little too chatty, wasting time and effort indeed."

With no other choice, Fu Qinghe had to escort Jin Fengju to the inner court. When they reached Concubine Luo's courtyard, they saw a few maids rushing about in the room and Concubine Luo nagging at Concubine Yu, "Don't forget your medicines, take them fifteen minutes before meals. And these tonics as well. There is some bird's nest left from last time, you should take all of it with you. Knowing your personality, you probably wouldn't trouble others to get it. Even though our young lady is meticulous, with such a monumental task on her hands, she might struggle to take care of everything. And, yes, although it is summer now, don't forget about your condition. Remember to wear an extra layer when you go out…"

Jin Fengju raised an eyebrow. He noticed that Concubine Yu was listening from the side and Concubine Luo's tone gradually choking up. He immediately understood, thinking: Right, which servant in these grand residences doesn't flatter the strong and step upon the weak? The Zhengjiang Palace masters themselves were the very picture of this despicable attitude. Is there any hope that the servants would behave any better? He believed that only Concubine Luo had been taking care of Concubine Yu's health. Otherwise, she would not have been able to recount these things so meticulously.

"That's enough, why are you all so long-winded? When you get to the Jing Dukedom, there will naturally be people to take good care of you," Fu Qinghe suddenly spoke. He then gave Concubine Luo a stern glare, which frightened both women so much that they practically jumped. They quickly took their places before the men and saluted, then seeing Jin Fengju behind Fu Qinghe, their unease deepened.

Concubine Yu was weak. So, it was Concubine Luo who organised the maids to carry her various luggage. Jin Fengju paused. He recalled the last time he was here, seeing how sympathetic Concubine Luo was with Concubine Yu. He turned his gaze to Fu Qinghe's dark expression. Once Concubine Yu left, this pent-up frustration might land on Concubine Luo. So, he thought that since he was going to do a good deed, he might as well see it through to the end and bring her along to add another favour to Fu Qiuning.

After stepping out of the rooms to allow Concubine Luo to continue packing and fussing over Concubine Yu, Jin Fengju deliberately raised his voice to say, "You there, all of you, come here. Do any of you know when Concubine Yu takes her medicine? Also, what sort of medicine does she take? Does she have any tonics she is currently taking? How do you take care of her supplements?"

The maids flinched at the rapid-fire questions. They could only blink at him and each other for a moment, before one of them ventured forward to say, "Concubine Luo is the one who handles such things. We are only responsible for cleaning and general maintenance of the house…"

Fu Qinghe's eyebrows rose so high that they nearly disappeared into his hairline.

Even as he glared at the maids, Jin Fengju gasped dramatically and said in a particularly loud voice, "Goodness me! In that case, isn't it better to have Concubine Luo come with my mother-in-law so that proper care is given? I believe that Zhenjiang Heir does not require her service every day, yes? Isn't it better to grant this son-in-law a little favour than to keep Concubine Luo here?"

Fu Qinghe was naturally shocked by Jin Fengju's behaviour. Since there was no point quarrelling with the crazy people, he sneered, "Is Fengju saying that this is also the Emperor's will?"

Jin Fengju laughed and said, "Of course, naturally this cannot be! Who does the Zhenjiang Heir think the emperor is? These are minor concubinage matters, how could they be important enough to bother the emperor? It is only because Mother-in-law is Qiuning's mother that the emperor even deigned to say anything. As for myself, I am only concerned about my mother-in-law's poor health. If the Zhenjiang Heir finds this request troublesome, should I send someone to plead the matter with the King?"

Fu Qiunghe was speechless. This person… was openly threatening him, right? Just to take away his concubine? Was this fellow crazy? To the point of threatening to go and complain to his father like a little child? If this fellow made a fuss with Feudal King Zhenjiang, with how the current situation was with Prince Hong, there was no doubt that the King would acquiesce in hopes of forming a relationship with the Duke of Jing's estate despite past conflicts.

While it was a little humiliating to have to let go of a woman or two from his own harem, it cost him very little to accommodate this annoying son-in-law. Although neither party were sincere in their actions, at least the actions would remain and he could redeem that favour in the future. Therefore, he pretended to sigh and said, "Indeed, it makes sense to have someone familiar with her routine around to look after her." He turned to Concubine Luo and said, "Pack your things as well, you shall go and look after your sister on my daughter's behalf."

Naturally, he emphasised the points where Fu Qiuning was 'his daughter' and that both women were 'sisters' from his harem.

Concubine Luo, who had been keeping herself busy and trying to not think of the future where she would be left alone once again once Concubine Yu left, was pleasantly surprised. So surprised, in fact, that she did not know what to do with herself.

It was Concubine Yu who said with a smile, "My dear sister, you must have packed even your own good clothes and things for me on top of all the supplements and medicines in the house. There is no need to pack more, we can leave just as we are."

Fu Qinghe gave a benevolent smile, and with a wave of his hand, had the servants bring another sedan chair in. "Indeed, that is so. Fear not, I shall send someone with more supplements to your side soon. Although the Duke of Jing's estate is rich and lacks nothing, I fear I ought to send some provisions over. If only as a courtesy…"

Jin Fengju chuckled, "There is no need, as you said, the Duke of Jing is rich with resources and precious medicines."

Of course, it was unlikely that someone from the Duke of Jing's household would welcome regular visits from their former enemy. Since the decoy had been refused, he smiled and said, "In that case, I trust you will allow my Concubines to bring their maids with them? I shall admit, I was once neglectful of Qiuning, and she brought only one maid with her. Alas, because of this, we heard nothing from her for over six years. Although it is late, I wish to not repeat the same mistakes."

Jin Fengju flinched from the reminder that he had neglected Fu Qiuning in those first six years of her married life. However, he still managed to force a smile and said, "Alright, the Zhenjiang Heir is right. Well then, this son-in-law will take his leave." After speaking, he cupped his fist.

After the sedan chair left through the Inner Ritual Gate , he made his way towards the outer court. Once he exited the side gate, he saw that a carriage was already waiting there.

He opened the door to find the two concubines already sitting together. He thought: No matter, that was all in the past. Qiuning and I are in a very loving relationship now. How much more loving and intimate will we be after I present her very own mother to her? Surely she would be very happy with this? That's right, no matter what, I should get along well with Mother-in-law and show her my best side so that she can persuade Qiuning to be on my side as well.

Thus with a winsome smile, he said, "Qiuning went to the palace early this morning. I think that she should be back by evening. I will bring Mother-in-law and Madam Concubine to greet the Old Madam and my mother first. We are all relatives; there's no need to be formal."

That's right, the first thing he should do is to ensure that Qiuning's mother was welcome at the Duke of Jing's estate. He had to show her that no matter what, his side of the family would always treat her better than the other side.

After that, he closed the carriage door and mounted his horse. They travelled like that to the Duke of Jing's estate. After entering from the front gate (look, he was already treating them better by letting them enter through the front gate instead of the side gate), he personally escorted Concubine Luo and Concubine Yu to Health & Longevity Court. Since the two ladies still looked anxious, he proceeded to beam and explain things about the estate to them on the way to Old Madam's place.

Both Concubine Luo and Concubine Yu had low status in Zhenjiang Palace, their status was even lower than the dowry maids and matrons brought in by newer concubines. Yet, at that moment, it was as though they had been pulled from the abyss and placed on clouds. The person who personally came to escort them was even the Young Marquis who was the Emperor's most favoured man. Though Jin Fengju was, in name, Concubine Yu's son-in-law, and referred to Concubine Yu as his mother-in-law, who would dare to treat this Young Marquis as a son-in-law? Weren't they very clear on how their daughter was wedded into the Duke of Jing's estate?

Therefore, these two women were at once incredibly flattered, but still floating in shock. Even as they looked at the flowers and trees of the Duke of Jing's estate, they could not help but wonder if they were still dreaming. They arrived at Health & Longevity Court to hear the cheerful chatter of maids and immediately stiffened up. It was time to meet the elder ladies of the Jin household!

The two concubines properly gave their salute and kept their behaviour modest and deferential. The Old Madam spared a few pleasant words for them before ordering the maids to escort them to Elegant Mansion. As for the Elder Madam, she kept a look of complete indifference throughout the entire exchange.

It was only after they had been seated in Elegant Mansion's flower hall and sipped a mouthful of hot, fragrant and obviously expensive tea that they finally believed that they had left that place of oppression behind. This was where Fu Qiuning resided, and from the charming, almost fawning treatment from Jin Fengju and Old Madam Jin's deliberately well-meaning words, it was clear that Fu Qiuning had their favour.

However, both women had experienced life in noble residences before, so they also understood that despite how well Jin Fengju had been treating their daughter and how kindly the Old Madam spoke to them, it could all disappear with a turn of the head. What's more, though the other madams and concubines looked happy, and kept talking about how lovely it was to have more relatives around the old women in the family, those people were probably smiling on the surface and secretly looking down on them with anger and envy.

Yu Jie and Jian Feng brought tea and snacks for the two concubines, mindful of their master's behaviour of just how well they should treat those two ladies. Especially more so, due to the gold pieces that had been stuffed into their hands just before he left. As the nominally trusted maids, Fu Qiuning had left them back at Elegant Mansion, knowing that if nothing else, they would not mistreat her mother too much. Instead, she brought Qiu Shuang and Qiu Yu to the palace with her.

Concubine Yu recognized Yu Jie but didn't recognize Jian Feng. Seeing a familiar face, she anxiously inquired about Fu Qiuning's current situation. As she listened, her face lit up. When she heard that her daughter had received a Fifth-ranked title and that the edict would likely be issued soon, her happiness grew. Beside her, Concubine Luo was also all smiles. At the very least, she would still have this Fifth-rank title to protect her should she need it in the future.

After chatting for a while, the concubines exchanged glances. Concubine Luo cautiously asked, "Such a vast courtyard, is Qiuning the only one here? Are there no other masters? Since we have come, we should meet them all."

Before the words fully left her lips, Jian Feng tittered and said, "Who else could be the master? This is where the Madam, the Young Masters and the Young Misses reside. Ah yes, you two probably don't know. Our Madam has gained another pair of children under her name. After Concubine Xu had some trouble earlier and was sent to the village, Young Master Yi and Third Young Miss were left under Madam's care."

Seeing the unease in Concubine Yu's and Concubine Luo's expressions, Jian Feng continued with a smile, "Madam Concubines, you need not worry. Young Master Yi's and Third Young Miss' characters are not considered bad. Now, they get along well with Madam and are not really causing any trouble. Madam Concubines must be tired now. How about joining us servants to take a look at the rooms? They have been cleaned up yesterday. Originally, Madam planned to squeeze some time out to pick you up yesterday, but she ended up being fully occupied and was unable to draw out even a bit of time, and would only return when the sky darkens."

Led by Jian Feng, Concubine Yu and Concubine Luo arrived at their respective rooms. The rooms were very spacious, and the decor was not plain either. The rooms were in fact, several times better than their rooms at the palace. Both women were touched and anxious at the same time. Touched by Fu Qiuning's consideration and filial piety, but anxious about how their presence would influence Fu Qiuning's position in a treacherous place like the Duke of Jing's estate. After all, who is to say that the Young Marquis would not one day turn his back on her on some imagined slight and lock her away once again?

Yu Jie was quick with her flattery as she said, "Madam mentioned that Madam Concubine's health is not good and that Madam Concubine needs to take medicine daily. This maid has been instructed to inquire after necessary medication and tonics. Were the supplements Madam Concubine have been taking sufficient? If not, she wishes to invite two renowned physicians to come without delay."

Concubine Luo quickly reported the medications and tonics that Concubine Yu took daily. While Concubine Yu did not pay much attention to her daily needs, Concubine Luo was especially attentive. The long years of loneliness at the palace had brought the two women closer, to the point that they could be considered inseparable best female friends.

Yu Jie and Jian Feng noted down all the information given to them. The maids also stayed behind to chat with the ladies a little while longer. It was not until noon was approaching that they left to allow the ladies to rest. After leaving the ladies, the maids instructed someone to prepare the necessary medicinal ingredients and supplements.

After a nap following their lunch. Yu'shi and Luo'shi woke up in the late afternoon feeling more refreshed than they had ever been. However, they were soon brought back to reality at a single glance of the maids who had accompanied them from the palace.

Dusk came, but Fu Qiuning had yet to return. Instead, Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao were the ones who came back from school.

When introduced to their maternal grandmother, both paid their respects despite knowing her much lower status. After all, they were all too aware of whose womb they were born from and had suffered close to half their lives for it. While they respected Old Madam Jin, the old lady was too remote and far away for them to depend on. The next closest female person they recognised as a parental figure was Aunt Yu, who had married out. Therefore, they were happy to have a maternal grandmother and her 'friend' around.

As for Jin Zhenyi and Jin Xiunan, Jin Xiunan had already pre-emptively stopped him from saying anything stupid by warning him just whose blood mother he would be insulting and to remember who the twins' blood mother was. After all, if Jin Fengju was willing to recognise a pair of 'cheap seedlings' just because of their talent, the fact that he had decided to bring that woman into the Duke of Jing's estate meant that he regarded her with some importance. In short, it was difficult for Jin Zhenyi to act out, and when he did, the other children worked together to make it look like he was just making stupid jokes to break the ice.

The sun had settled behind the mountains when Fu Qiuning finally returned, escorted by none other than Jin Fengju himself.

Naturally, he had to be there to remind his beloved Qiuning just who was the one who had gone through all the trouble to bring a beloved mother and her bonus companion into the estate in a great demonstration of incredible love.

Fu Qiuning herself was a little apprehensive about meeting Concubine Yu again. After all, she was not really this woman's daughter. She had merely occupied her body after this poor woman committed suicide after being neglected by her husband for over a year. She held the alternatively sobbing and smiling woman in her arms with complicated feelings, unsure how to properly react.

Still, she was happy to know that this poor woman had gotten out of the Zhenjiang Palace. Concubine Luo being brought out as well was a pleasant surprise. If she ever had to make a run or was banished once more, they would have more company. While she thanked Concubine Luo for looking after her 'mother', the maids had already seen the writing on the wall and prepared a feast for dinner.

After the evening meal, Jin Fengju noticed Fu Qiuning holding Yu'shi's and Luo'shi's hands, seemingly having much to discuss. Realising that he wouldn't have his wife's company that night, he discreetly left and went towards Concubine Huo's residence to visit his daughter.

After all, it was his duty as a parent to care for his children, and had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he could not spend time with Qiuning at all.

Once the children were all asleep, Yu'shi's excitement still hadn't waned. Holding Fu Qiuning's hand, she said, "My child, a few days ago, your father came home angrily and asked me about that… what's it called… Huang… something opera…"

Fu Qiuning quickly chimed in, "Huangmei opera."

Concubine Yu nodded eagerly, "Yes, yes, yes, that's the one, Huangmei opera. Your father kept asking me why I didn't tell him anything about it… But how would I know anything? You… when did you learn all this?"
