Fu Qiuning had already explained the matter several times by then and had no problem repeating everything to her mother and Concubine Yu.
Naturally, both were surprised and full of praise for her 'achievements'.
Concubine Yu chimed in curiously, "Back then, when the Old Master came over to scold us, he also mentioned how good this opera is. Young Miss, since there are no strangers around now…"
She suddenly stopped speaking, presumably remembering that Fu Qiuning's status was no longer that of a 'young miss' but the wife of a Marquis. Her face flushed red with embarrassment. Surely someone like her had no right to request a performance from someone so above her station?
Fu Qiuning smiled and said, "If Mother and Madam Concubine wish to hear me sing, I am willing. Regardless of my status, am I not Mother's daughter?"
Concubine Yu and Concubine Luo hastily said, "No, no, regardless of anything, you are still the Madam of a noble family. You must maintain your dignity, even behind closed doors."
Fu Qiuning smiled awkwardly at the women, thinking: It's only a song, but yet these two are so afraid to hear me sing. Well, if that's the case, let's not push the matter.
The ladies continue their chat for a little while longer before retiring to their rooms.
The next day, Fu Qiuning returned to the palace as usual.
While she was in the middle of coaching one of the singers, a palace maid rushed in. A little concerned, Fu Qiuning stopped to look at the rushing maid, who beamed and said, "Madam, this maid just heard that the Young Marquis may have to leave for an official mission again. Madam may wish to return home earlier and help the lord prepare."
For a moment, Fu Qiuning stared blankly at her, wondering what this news had to do with her when she noticed the expectant gazes from everyone. She inwardly sighed, time to put on a performance of her own.
Otherwise, who knew what kind of news this maid would bring to the Empress Dowager? In a loud and dramatic voice, she exclaimed, "Going out on another official mission again? It has not even been half a year since he returned from Yangzhou…"
Before she could continue, the palace maid gave a little trill of laughter and said, "This is the Emperor's way of showing concern for Young Marquis. He has already rested for half a year now. In previous years, when has he never gone for a few trips? There is no need to worry, Madam. Missions like the one to Yangzhou should not be common."
Fu Qiuning nodded. Now that both of them were done with their little side act, she returned to her coaching. She had less than four months until D-day, so every moment counted. As the maid said, Jin Fengju often went on these little missions for the Emperor anyway, so there was really no need to bother herself with them.
In fact, she continued with the rehearsal until late in the afternoon as usual before taking the carriage home. The moment she stepped into
Elegant Mansion, no less than three people reported that Jin Fengju was at Health & Longevity Court. However, she had no intention of going there to see him. The man would definitely turn up at her place that night no matter what.
Yu'shi and Luo'shi, having already heard that the Young Marquis was leaving for an 'outside mission', were casting worried looks at her. Both of them were incredibly anxious for various reasons.
As she had expected, Jin Fengju turned up while Fu Qiuning was reassuring the two ladies. Yu'shi and Luo'shi hurried back to their rooms after giving their greetings to Jin Fengju. Once the ladies were gone, Jin Fengju smiled at Fu Qiuning and said, "Could it be that I am indulging in wishful thinking? Is that a troubled look on your face? If that's the case, there is no need for you to worry. This time, I'm going to the northwest to rouse the troops, conducting a round of inspections along the route. Do you think every place is as dangerous as Yangzhou? So, there's no need to worry."
Fu Qiuning looked at him incredulously. "As you say, there is no need to worry."
Instead of pouting as she had half expected, Jin Fengju clapped his hands and nodded with a wide smile, "As expected, my brilliant wife saw through me, yes? Just now, how many words have I spent trying to explain the matter at Health & Longevity Court? Even so, though there is little danger attached to the mission, it is still an urgent matter. Help me pack, I need to depart tomorrow."
Fu Qiuning raised an eyebrow, "Help you pack? What would I know to pack for you? In fact, none of the maids here have packed for you at all. Call Jin Ming instead and have him supervise your packing." She turned to leave, but was chased down by Jin Fengju who hurriedly said, "How could it have nothing to do with you? Are you angry with me for leaving you so suddenly? I know, I know, I shall tell you what's happening. In fact, it is because Softstone Kingdom has been quiet for a long time, yet we do not know what emboldened them to suddenly attack our borders this year. With it being such a tiny country, our Great Ning Empire doesn't fear it. But behind them, the Heartwind Kingdom, with its strong and aggressive population, is not something that we can ignore.
The Softstone Kingdom is small and weak, always having been backed by us to resist the Heartwind Kingdom. But this time, they unexpectedly turned hostile. Likely, the Heartwind Kingdom has secretly carried out some plot. The Softstone Kingdom is our Great Ning Empire's gateway and we must not let it become Heartwind's route to attack our supply routes. That is why I am in such a hurry to leave."
Fu Qiuning stopped walking and said, "I see."
Jin Fengju chuckled, "Qiuning, you are a discerning person. I have only told you about this and I haven't breathed a word to Old Madam, Elder Madam and the others. You mustn't let it slip either. Actually, it is really not that dangerous. I will play it by ear. If things get difficult, we will take the initiative. Instead of letting Softstone become Heartwind's invasion path, it would be better for our Great Ning Empire to turn it into our border. The border troops are strong and brave, and this time I am bringing twice as many guards. So, rest assured. Fu Qiuning actually had no idea what he was talking about.
What Softstone Kingdom or Soapstone Country? What Heartwind Kingdom or Heartworm Country? Surely none of these places have anything to do with her?
Although it may be troublesome if war were to happen, she would still be stuck there regardless.
Early the next morning, Jin Fengju headed to Health & Longevity Court to bid farewell to Old Madam Jin, Madam Jiang, and his other wife and concubines. The women of the family saw him off beyond the inner ceremonial gate before finally stopping in their tracks.
Fu Qiuning watched him leave and couldn't help but feel a bit relieved. At least she didn't have to put on a performance for him all night long after coaching a bunch of palace performers all day long. She silently prayed: Please have a nice long stay at Soapstone Country, or was it Softstone Country? Who knows, just stay away for as long as you can.
With Jin Fengju gone, life at Elegant Mansion settled into a tranquil routine. Fu Qiuning went to the palace every day to coach the singers and supervise rehearsals. She periodically checked the children's homework in the evenings. With no harassment from Jin Fengju, the study room returned to its quiet studious atmosphere, punctuated by the occasional smart remark from Jin Zhenyi.
Fu Qiuning had divided Celestial Couple into three major parts for rehearsals. By the end of the month, the first part had been fully learned by all the performers. Although it was the shortest part of the three, it had the most performers since it was the 'introductory' part of the play.
As for the music, she just let the two musicians have free reign over every decision. All she did was suggest the inclusion of the yangqin and the konghou for a purer and more romantic sound.
Today was yet another day of rehearsal when the Empress
Dowager's palace maid, who came now and then to inspect their progress, eagerly approached Fu Qiuning and pulled her aside to say, "We must have the Empress Dowager witness a performance at this stage. This opera is truly unparalleled. I was both dazzled and overjoyed to the point that I could find no words fit to describe it. My dear Madam, do not keep the Empress Dowager hanging, you must know the old woman has been looking forward to it day and night so much that her gaze can almost pierce through obstacles."
What could Fu Qiuning do but smile and say, "Of course, it shall be done at Lady-in-waiting Li's discretion. Thus far, though there are some minor flaws, the performance done by the palace talents is not bad. Hearing how the Empress Dowager is so anxious to see our progress, I trouble the Lady-in-waiting to inform Her Majesty that should she wish it, they troup may perform this very afternoon."
Lady-in-waiting Li laughed, "How can this lowly one be the person to report such a great thing? Not to mention, I lack the necessary knowledge on these matters. I fear I must trouble the Marchioness to come with me to make the report together. While we are there, even if we eat a little more of the Empress Dowager's snacks, I'm sure the old lady would still be happy to see us."
With that, she pulled Fu Qiuning along to see the Empress Dowager. The palace maids, musicians and dancers that were left behind were all very excited.
Sounds of music being played and singers practising their verses could be heard within the Jade Lotus Pavilion, creating a cacophony of noise.
Fu Qiuning arrived at the Empress Dowager's palace to see that several elegant ladies were already seated inside the ostentatiously decorated room. Those had to be the various imperial concubines stuck inside the inner palace after marrying the emperor. She already knew from Jin Fengju's rambling that Prince Rong's mother had already passed on a long time ago, but Prince Lie's mother should be one of the elegant ladies sitting before her.
Lady-in-waiting Li introduced Fu Qiuning to the ladies and she had to greet each of these imperial ladies of the palace individually. Fortunately, no one insisted for her to kneel and kowtow to all of them, otherwise, her poor knees would have been worn out.
Eventually, the Empress Dowager ordered some servants to bring in a chair. The chair was placed in a position just below Imperial Concubine Jin. Fu Qiuning noted that this person's name, although was also a 'Jin', had nothing to do with the Duke of Jing's family since her 'Jin' meant 'brocade' and had nothing to do with the 'Jin' or 'gold' of Jin Fengju's family.
The Empress Dowager smiled and addressed the room, "It has been many days since you have last visited me. I trust you have some good news for me, yes? If you dare to say that you have none, don't blame me for kicking you."
Everyone, including Fu Qiuning, laughed at that lame joke.
This situation was exactly like that time she had to attend a meeting with the bosses. Only the big boss was allowed to make jokes, and her job was to laugh. Once the laughter died down, Fu Qiuning respectfully answered, "Yes, Qiuning is here to report that the first section of the Celestial Couple has been completed. This humble woman dares not present anything until the dress rehearsals have been done, but Lady-in-waiting Li expressed that as Your Majesty had been looking forward to their performance, we can only offer up a less-than-perfect piece for Your Majesty's inspection. Do accept this humble woman's apologies and forgive any future transgressions should the piece turn out to be less than perfect."
The Empress Dowager smiled and said graciously, "I understand. We are indeed curious to see your progress. When can we expect to see this performance?"
Fu Qiuning smiled and replied, "Today's weather happens to be excellent. A clear day with a cool breeze is excellent for watching a play. If Empress Dowager does not mind, this afternoon should be good."
The Empress Dowager nodded and turned to the imperial concubines, saying, "The last time Qiuning performed, none of you were present. Afterwards, she has been busy with rehearsals, so she hasn't even visited my palace frequently, not to mention any of your palaces. I think that all of you must have known that there is a new opera around, yet have never heard it. So, today, all of you should come and listen. It is truly a most extraordinary and unique performance indeed. Why else would I, a veteran who had seen so many good operas in my lifetime, be so eager for this one?"
Imperial Concubine Xu, Prince Lie's mother, was an astute woman. She quickly responded to Empress Dowager's words by saying, "Indeed, we heard nothing but talks about this extraordinary play every day, to the point that our ears have grown calluses. This humble woman could only wonder, could such an excellent opera really exist? Hearing Mother Empress' assurance, this humble woman's doubts immediately disappear, leaving nothing but an itching curiosity behind. After all, how could any of us claim to be more knowledgeable to Mother Empress?"
Another concubine, Consort Huishu, chimed in, "Some days ago, this humble woman was taking a walk around the gardens. Thinking that the lotus flowers in the Jade Lotus Pavilion were about to bloom. This humble woman was about to walk over to take a look but found that His Majesty had issued strict orders not to disturb the area around the Jade Lotus Pavilion. So, this humble woman could only watch from a distance. Although nothing could be heard, the faint melodies carried by the wind and the fluttering robes in the waterside pavilion were truly enchanting. Now, thanks to Mother Empress' magnanimity, we can finally sate our curiosity."
Now that two people had taken the lead to flatter the Empress Dowager, the rest eagerly followed suit, their mouths filled with nothing but honeyed remarks as they praised the Mother of the Empire for her insight, intelligence and discerning eye. The Empress Dowager nodded repeatedly at the warm praises before finally saying, "Since everyone is so interested, let us all go. In fact, let us call for more people to come and liven up the atmosphere. Bi Xi, go and extend an invitation to the Emperor for this afternoon's play. Let him know that we shall start without delay regardless of whether he turns up or not."
Everyone laughed again.
Fu Qiuning thought: Well, it looks like the Empress Dowager has a good relationship with the current Emperor, similar to how Old Madam Jin is supportive of everything Jin Fengju does.
She was still pondering over this interesting parallel when the Empress Dowager said, "That's right, send two eunuchs to the Duke of Jing's estate. Tell them that their daughter-in-law will be showcasing her talent this afternoon and to come and listen to a section of this unique opera as well. Send word to those princes and princess consort as well."
Prince Lie's mother smiled slightly and said, "The Empress Dowager is truly considerate. One should know that though we may forget to invite anyone, we must never forget Prince Rong's palace. Who doesn't know how competitive Princess Consort Rong is? Now that her sister-in-law is the one putting the play together, who knows what kind of words she would whisper behind us if we forget to invite her?"
Fu Qiuning thought: These noble people are just too tricky. Look at the way she takes the opportunity to slander the rival faction. Whatever, I am but a humble shu-born daughter, my importance only lasts as long as this play is popular.
Let's pretend not to hear anything.
Naturally, a politically savvy Empress Dowager also understood the meaning behind those words. She cast a glance at Fu Qiuning, wanting to gauge how she would react. When she saw nothing but quiet indifference on Fu Qiuning's face, the Empress Dowager nodded approvingly to herself. She thought: King Zhenjiang may have distinguished himself at war during his early years, but in his later years, neither father nor son showed any promise. That's right, I heard Fengju say that this child and her mother were not particularly favoured either, to the point that both mother and daughter were exiled to the village. The girl was later called back to the palace only to be forced onto Fengju. Aih, after so many calculations and machinations, it looked like this father and son duo were blind to the girl's virtues, benefitting Fengju instead.
She was still pondering over these things when Fu Qiuning stood up to say, "To answer Your Majesty, since the performance is scheduled for this afternoon, this humble woman should go and supervise the performers and ensure that no problem would arise-"
The Empress Dowager cut her off with a laugh, "Enough, enough, you have already rehearsed for so many days and worked so hard, surely there's no need to look at them anymore? Moreover, what problem could there be? You must stay for lunch today, I insist. After lunch, you may take a nap and be rested for the afternoon's performance. As for those performers, just send word for them to come and perform."
Everyone laughed again. Fu Qiuning could only force a smile at this high-handed, unreasonable order. Naturally, she knew that the order was nothing more than yet another 'joke' at her expense. Having no other choice, she stayed for lunch with the royal ladies.
Once the important people had gone off to take their naps, she hurried over to the Jade Lotus Pavilion. If the troupe was to perform that afternoon, they had to make preparations. By the time she reached the pavilion, there was already a frisson of excitement in the air. Someone had already sent word that they would be performing before the Empress Dowager that afternoon.
There was no time to even think about putting together a costume. However, the girls were already pretty enough in their own way and what was important at that time was the singing, dancing and music. Everything else could wait. She stayed with the performers until a decree came down to inform them that the performance would take place at Heavenly Fragrance Tower.
Fu Qiuning was familiar with the name 'Heavenly Fragrance Tower'. It was the name of the place where Qin Keqing had hung herself after having been accused of engaging in an illicit affair with her father-in-law. Not only that, after her death, the father-in-law, Jia Zhen, was even more emotional than her husband, Jia Rong. There was even new evidence to support speculations that the original thirteenth chapter of Dream of Red Chamber was later removed, presumably by Annotator Ji Huosou. The subtitle was 'Lewd Death at Heavenly Fragrance Tower', which was not at all a very auspicious name for a building within the imperial palace grounds.
On the other hand, what better name would serve a place that is traditionally filled with intrigue, suspicious deaths and hidden lewd behaviour?
Fu Qiuning led the procession of performers and musicians together with Official Lin to the ominously (?) named theatre and found that the two floors of seats were already fully occupied. At first, she was a little worried about the performers feeling pressured about being watched by imperials, but it turned out that she had overthought the matter.
After all, these were professional performers. Professionals who regularly appear in front of tough audiences. Moreover, even without her expressed instruction, they had come up with a rudimentary set of costumes for the opera.
The clothes were not new, but they fit the temperament of the characters that would appear on stage, especially the seven celestials that gathered together at the opening act.
She was wondering what else she could do for these professionals when a eunuch scuttled over with a smile and said, "Madam, Her Majesty the Empress Dowager and His Majesty the Emperor bade you sit with them and watch the performance with the audience. You have worked hard these few days and should reap the rewards of your hard work. Do come quickly, Madam."
Fu Qiuning cast one more look at the group of performers who were already engrossed in getting ready. They clearly didn't need her around to lecture them, and after some final instructions to Official Lin, she headed towards the seats. She gave her greetings to the Emperor and Empress Dowager first, straightening up when the Emperor told her to do so.
The Emperor chuckled and said, "Your husband has been away for a few days now. We have received a letter saying that he was preparing something at the border. All is safe and well, You just focus your attention on creating the opera. I believe that once the opera is ready, he will be back. The two of you are the pillars of my Great Ning Dynasty. Yes, this is a most perfect match indeed."
To be called a 'great pillar of the Great Ning Dynasty' was flattering indeed. However, it was not something that one should be too proud of. Fu Qiuning quickly expressed her gratitude in a subdued way. Not denying her contribution, but not making a big fuss either.
The Empress Dowager must have seen this as more show of modesty from Fu Qiuning and graciously said, "Your mother-in-law is over there with the rest of your family. Seeing how you have gone out so early in the mornings and back late in the evenings, they have brought your four children over as well. Go and sit with them."
The Empress Dowager must have felt that this was a great generosity on her part. Even so, Fu Qiuning dimly noted that her blood mother, Yu'shi, was not among those seated together in the Jin Clan group. The Empress Dowager must have known that her 'mother' had moved into the Duke of Jing Estate. However, since concubines were generally regarded as less than servants, she must have considered Yu'shi as barely human, let alone an actual 'family member'. Once again, Fu Qiuning reminded herself that this was the ancient world where discrimination was the norm.
Not to mention, Prince Rong's mistress was only allowed into the palace because she was carrying royal blood. Otherwise, she would not be fit to even sweep the steps of this place. Speaking of which, how humiliated Princess Consort Rong must have felt when she had to accompany that mistress into the place resided by her judgy mother-in-law accompanied by the woman her husband had cheated on her with?
Still, it was nice to see the four children seated together, practically brimming with excitement.
None of Jin Fengju's other children were there. Well, if nothing else, Jin Zhenyi would be very happy to brag about this experience to the other children. She could already see the glint of spite and arrogance shining in his eyes even from this distance.
The children stood up to greet her. Although she did get to see the children in the mornings, they barely managed to exchange a few words. Also, since she had to revise and make plans for the rehearsals, she barely had time to look at their homework and could only hope that the children were keeping up on their own.
As for the rest… Old Madam Jin made a small joke which elicited a moderate amount of laughter, looks like the people around her understand that she could not overshadow the Empress Dowager in her territory… even Madam Jiang said something nice to Fu Qiuning.
Well, it's not like she could be snippy at the Emperor Dowager's favourite person of the month now, right?
Seeing that the performers had settled into the place, the Emperor ordered for the show to start. Fu Qiuning was about to settle down when she noticed Princess Consort Rong waving at her. Unable to pretend to not see her, Fu Qiuning could only hurry over to see what the woman wanted. When she arrived, Jin Yanqiu pursed her lips into a pouty smile and hissed, "Such amazing talent, yet to only showcase it now. Fu Qiuning, ah, Fu Qiuning, you certainly are full of hidden talents. You wait, I shall settle the score with you later."
Fu Qiuning was startled by the unexpected challenge.
Instead of openly retaliating, which was obviously what this poor scorned woman wanted, she blinked stupidly and said, "Princess Consort?"
This obviously angered Jin Yanqiu. Her need for drama actually made her ample chest heaved with some strong emotions, but she was still politically savvy enough to not say anything, merely staring coldly at Fu Qiuning with a sneer.
Frankly, Fu Qiuning had no idea what that woman wanted with her. After a couple of minutes of watching the silent, chest-heaving breathing, she decided that there was nothing she could do but bob in place with a 'Please excuse this humble woman' and return to her seat. Whatever, if Jin Yanqiu had a bone to pick with her, she could leave the palace and storm back to her maternal home again, causing another friction against the Empress Dowager and Prince Rong. After all, the ones who would panic would be Jin Fengju and the rest of the Duke of Jing's family.
"
The heavenly palace is too desolated,
Day and night, I counted rows and rows of clouds,
Eldest sister says the world of Men is good,
The men would farm and the girls weave…
"
This was the opening section of the Celestial Couple. The moment when the Seventh Daughter appeared, played by a singer who was as beautiful as a flower with a rather celestial-like air about her. Her appearance captured everyone's attention. The music shifted into something more upbeat, and she sang,
"
Why not see Eldest sister now?
She shall decide and take responsibility~
"
thus ending the song to thunderous applause.
The seven celestial maidens came on stage, their flowing sleeves in colourful embroidery, making them look like flying butterflies, dazzling the eyes of the people. Just seeing them brought a smile to everyone's faces.
"
Fishermen live on the water,
Reeds lined the banks like walls,
Nets blooming from boats,
A netful of fish, a netful of shrimps…
"
Old Madam Jin leaned over to say, "They sing very well. I must say, they sound even better than you, especially with the musical accompaniment."
Fu Qiuning nearly rolled her eyes at this redundant remark. However, she could only nod and smile at this 'intelligent critique'. It was something that she had already said many times to many people in fact, so what was the point of saying that back to her?
Not wanting to receive more false compliments, she turned away to look at the other people in the audience. The Emperor and Empress Dowager were nodding along to the music, occasionally leaning in to make some comments to each other. The rest of the people were similarly occupied, swaying or nodding along to the music.
"
A ray of light pierces the clouds,
I come floating down to earth,
I love not the celestial days,
I wish to love like flying mandarin ducks…
"
The seven celestial danced lightly and gracefully across the stage, their sleeves fluttering in the breeze. Suddenly, the beauty in the centre drew back her sleeves and stopped dancing to stare into the distance. The music slowly stopped.
Fu Qiuning stood up, walked down to the front of the stage to kneel before the Emperor and Empress Dowager and said, "Reporting to Your Majesty the Empress Dowager and Your Majesty the Emperor, due to the time constraint, we only managed to rehearse up to this point. It would take a little more time to complete the rest of the other two sections. What do Your Majesty the Empress Dowager and Your Majesty the Emperor think of this opera?"
What else could they say? If not for Fu Qiuning making this announcement, they would still be immersed in the play. In that instance, not only did the Emperor and Empress Dowager give their nod of approval, but the rest of the audience also shouted 'Good! Good!' and erupted into a cacophony of discussion. The Empress Dowager praised Fu Qiuning again and again. The Emperor was in such a good mood that he had the officials, both men and women who had watched the play with him, stay for a royal banquet. It was quite late before they finally dispersed.
After working hard for the past few weeks and having to stay and entertain the bosses on this last day, Fu Qiuning was exhausted. When she finally arrived at Elegant Mansion, she was welcomed by Yu'shi and Luo'shi, who exclaimed over her thin appearance. Both women tittered and said, "Goodness, if the Young Marquis is here to see you, he would feel so distressed!'
That was really the last straw. She abruptly bade goodnight to the ladies and went to her room for some well-deserved sleep. At least the emperor had the decency to allow the children to come home early and sleep since they had to school the next day.
The next day, she woke up early to find that Yu'shi and Luo'shi were already up.
Indeed, the ladies had been up early from the first day they stayed here, especially after knowing that Fu Qiuning had to leave early for the palace and come back late. They even stayed up late to greet her before she went to bed. The twins were also there too, chatting casually with their grandmother figures. A short while later, Jin Zhenyi and Jin Xiunan also walked in. Jin Zhenyi headed straight for Fu Qiuning to loudly say, "Mother, after making such a great contribution and receiving praises from the Emperor and Empress Dowager, once Father comes back, you can speak to him about letting me visit my mother, right?"
Fu Qiuning privately sighed at that precocious child. If he ever decided to go into doing business, he would surely succeed. She raised an eyebrow and said, "You sure know how to press your advantage. Your Father isn't here and you know I am currently in favour. Very good. Unfortunately, your wish will most likely only happen in autumn, so do be patient until then."
Jin Zhenyi already knew that, but receiving a confirmation from Fu Qiuning still made him happy. He still remembered the day his own mother hugged him and Jin Zhenyi, bitter tears falling down her cheeks as she mourned how they would most likely never meet each other in her lifetime. Again and again, she told them to be careful and to study hard, that they may one day steal a meeting in the future when they had all grown up.
This had frightened Jin Zhenyi into acting out. Surely no matter what he did, Father would never let them meet their mother, so why should he be compliant? Therefore, when Jin Xiunan bowed her head to that favoured woman, he was very angry at her. However, it turned out that his sister had greater wisdom than he.
Yes, it was the right thing to do to follow his sister's insight. After all, he had just received confirmation from dear Official Mother that they would be seeing her soon! In less than a year in fact!
"Mother, your son has already grown up. Let us meet soon!"
Suddenly, the maids outside all exclaimed in unison, "The Young Madam and the three young ladies have arrived!" Then, one of the maids lifted the curtain, rushed inside and announced, "Madam, the Young Madam and the three young ladies have arrived." As she spoke, Jin Yanfang and the three girls from the Feng family entered the room. Jin Yanfang smiled and said, "Now, everyone in the estate is talking about how elegant Sister-in-law is and how much praise you have received from the Emperor and the Empress Dowager for your exceptionally beautiful and enjoyable opera. It is making me so envious. I told my mother that the next time she goes to the palace, she should let me dress up as one of her maids so I can at least sneak in and watch the opera."
Everyone laughed for a while before the sound of footsteps approached again from outside. This time, it turned out to be Concubine Huo, Cui'shi and Yue Lan arriving together. They each brought gifts, but Concubine Huo's gift was quite valuable – a red agate bracelet. Fu Qiuning couldn't help but be surprised by the blood-red hue of the bracelet, thinking to herself: Such high-quality red agate should be quite rare. Why is Concubine Huo being so generous? This is very strange. Why is it that every time she visits, the gifts become more and more extravagant? Earlier, they were merely some snacks, but now she is giving me such a fine bracelet. With something this valuable, wouldn't it be better for her to fawn on Jiang Wanying by giving it to her? After all, I do not even care about my family's affairs.
As she pondered that, she couldn't help but feel suspicious, thinking that there was no such thing as a free lunch in this world. This shouldn't be anything good. Even Brother Yi knows that she is not a good woman, so would a person such as I even be struck unawares?
She remained cautious but maintained a warm smile on her face. As the sun rose higher in the sky, Jin Yanfang and the Feng sisters seemed not very interested in interacting with Concubine Huo, so they took their leave. At that, Cui'shi and Yue Lan also decided to depart. Concubine Huo seemed like she wanted to stay a bit longer, but Cui'shi persuaded her to leave. As she did, Concubine Huo took on the appearance of a concerned younger sister and said, "Elder Sister, despite your current popularity, you cannot remain in the mansion. Do you know who our Lord Husband is now? Elder Sister must be cautious. Do not let Lord Husband be ensnared by some seductress while you are away."
Fu Qiuning felt a pang of unease. Concubine Huo had suddenly said something so unrelated and seemingly out of context. It seemed that she was dropping some hints. Could she have noticed something unusual? On the surface, she remained composed and smiled, saying, "Did you all hear that? Did she drink too much last night and hasn't sobered up yet? What seductress? What kind of family does the Jing Dukedom have? Where could we find such a remarkable person? Is it because Lord Husband hasn't visited you recently that you're becoming so suspicious? Have you forgotten that Lord Husband left for the border to rouse the troops just half a month ago? How can he even return before a month has passed?"
As she spoke, she escorted them to the door and watched them leave. Cui'shi and Yue Lan smiled politely and agreed. Only Concubine Huo shook her head and said with a smile, "If Elder Sister doesn't heed my advice and remains careless, suffering a loss might be just around the corner." Afterwards, she left with a cold laugh. Fu Qiuning watched them until their silhouettes disappeared past the gates, lost in thought for a while before she turned back into her room.
"Mother, what did that woman mean? What's a seductress?" asked Jin Zhenyi curiously. Fu Qiuning scolded, "Concubine Huo was drunk. Throw out all that nonsense from your brain. Otherwise, your father will punish you when he returns and finds out."
However, Jin Zhenyi was not convinced and retorted, "My father won't punish me for this. This is called being inquisitive."
Before Fu Qiuning could reply, Jin Changjiao chimed in with a laugh, "Oh, come on. Why do I not see Elder Brother being inquisitive? You only think of being inquisitive now. I don't even see you being this enthusiastic to learn in the classroom."
Jin Zhenyi raised his head and said proudly, "How do you know I don't ask questions in class? Ask Elder Brother. I have been asking the teacher a lot of questions lately. The other day, the teacher even praised me." After saying this, he turned to Jin Changfeng and shouted, "Elder Brother, speak the truth, didn't the teacher praise me? Don't you take revenge for past personal grudges and say that I'm just talking nonsense."
Jin Changfeng was always composed, and he never took these petty arguments to heart. Seeing his younger brother and sister dragging him into this, he reluctantly said, "Yes, Brother Zhenyi has indeed become more diligent in his studies lately, and his poetry has improved significantly."
Jin Zhenyi felt even prouder. However, he heard Fu Qiuning's piercing words, "Your father has emphasized countless times that poetry is secondary. He wants you to study the Four Books and Five Classics diligently.
Yet, what are your results now?" Before she could finish, Jin Zhenyi lowered his head and then raised it, shouting, "Ah, I just remembered I have two sheets of big characters left to write. I will go to the study first."
Fu Qiuning was both exasperated and amused. She stood up and said, "Alright, it is almost time for lunch. Why are you going to the study? You only know how to do these superficial things." She then turned to Jian Feng and said, "Send someone to the side kitchen to check if the dishes are ready. If it is, serve them in the dining room. The children still have to go to the clan school after lunch."
Due to the successful performance, Fu Qiuning had a rare day off. She remembered how the Empress Dowager had jokingly told her to rest well and how she could have extended her break if Jin Fengju was at home. However, since he just had to be away at this time, a single day's rest to relieve her fatigue would still suffice. The Fu Qiuning back then couldn't help but roll her eyes internally, thinking: Pei, does she really think I'm the kind of woman who can only exist by clinging to a man?
However, regardless of her thoughts, having a day off was something to be happy about. Even Old Madam Jin and Madam Jiang knew she had been working hard, so they specifically told her to take a good nap that day and not to worry about observing the household rules in the main residence. Still, she had to send the Jin siblings and the other children off to school. It had been a while since the two children had breakfast with their mother. After they finished eating and left, Fu Qiuning was about to have a quick snack and change clothes when she heard the maids all laughing and saying, "Madam, are you confused? Aren't you resting at home today? You don't have to go to the palace." It was then that she realised it and couldn't help but laugh as well.
Although she still felt a bit tired, she couldn't fall back asleep, so she decided to lie on the couch and watch her maids busy themselves outside, feeding the birds, tending to the flowers, and tidying up the courtyard. She also pondered where Jin Fengju might be at that moment and when he would return. On this trip to rouse the troops, would there be any danger?
After a while, Concubine Mei and Jin Yanfang came to visit after they returned from giving their greetings at Health & Longevity Court. Since the girls from large families usually didn't have many leisure activities, they typically spent their days doing needlework and visiting each other's homes. Hence, the girls such as Baochai, Daiyu, and Tanchun in Dream of the Red Chamber often gathered together. However, since Fu Qiuning had been heading to the palace to perform, Elegant mansion had become less lively lately. It wasn't easy for her to finally have a day off, so how would the others miss the opportunity?
As they were chatting, a maid rushed into the room. In a short moment, she had already reached the door, lifted the curtain and entered, saying hurriedly, "Madam, an imperial decree from the palace has arrived. It specifically asks for Madam to receive it. Madam, go quickly, Old Madam, Elder Madam and the others are probably already dressed and waiting."
These words caused a commotion in the Elegant Mansion. Jian Feng, Yu Jie, and the other maids quickly helped Fu Qiuning change her clothes, then hurriedly proceeded to the front court. Indeed, she found the large courtyard already arranged with incense altars, with Old Madam Jin and the others standing there. Seeing her arrive, they all walked forward in a line and knelt in front of the incense altar, waiting silently for the eunuch with the imperial decree to announce it.
"The Emperor, In Service To Heaven, Bearer of Fate, declares to all under the sun: The wife of Jinxiang Marquis Fengju, virtuous in morals, beautiful in visage…"
The eunuch's sharp voice echoed throughout the courtyard. Finally, the Fifth-Rank title that the Emperor had promised to Fu Qiuning earlier was now officially granted, accompanied by some gold and silver jewellery and colourful silk. Although naturally, they still paled in comparison to the generous rewards given to Jin Fengju back in the day. Still, since it was bestowed upon Fu Qiuning, a woman, how could it not make others envious?
The edict concluded by acknowledging the hardships Fu Qiuning endured daily by travelling between the palace and the Duke's residence. Thus, the Emperor sent over those musicians and dancers, instructing her to teach them within the Duke's estate. However, it was forbidden to reveal this to anyone, and she was encouraged to take her teaching role seriously, among other things.
Upon receiving this edict, Fu Qiuning naturally felt delighted. From that day forward, she wouldn't need to run between the two places. In that era without cars, although it wasn't physically exhausting to ride in a sedan chair or carriage, it still consumed time. To reach the palace on time, she had to wake up half an hour earlier every morning. Now, with the Emperor and Empress Dowager's consideration, she could rest easier. Even the servants in the Jing Dukedom were joyous. Although the Emperor had forbidden them from disclosing any secrets, with that kind of opera, even if they heard it more than ten times over, they still might not be able to sing it in return. Also, how would foreign spies be able to infiltrate the Great Ning Empire Capital? Taking ten thousand steps back, even if they did manage to infiltrate, they still would not be able to learn this opera perfectly. The Emperor was merely worried about the All Nations Cultural Festival to display this much caution. The ladies being able to catch a bit of the performance on the side wouldn't hurt.
The whole family was delighted, and they also conferred big fat red packets to the eunuchs who delivered the decree before sending them off. Everyone rushed to congratulate Fu Qiuning, and when they finally entered Old Madam Jin's residence, Jiang Wanying smiled and said, "Old Ancestor and Elder Sister are so absorbed in happiness, but now that all these people are about to arrive, where are we going to accommodate them? Although we are not worried about money or food, or finding places for them to stay, finding a place for the performance is rather challenging. The Emperor has also ordered secrecy about the matter, and now, it is also the peak of summer. Even if we perform inside, we will have to open windows. Wouldn't the music surely be heard throughout the estate? Speaking of it, only the garden the Emperor once visited is vacant…"
Before she could finish, Old Madam Jin decisively interrupted, "That won't do. We absolutely cannot use that garden." She contemplated for a moment and then heard Madam Fang speak up, "Old Madam, our mansion has just been newly renovated. Originally, we were planning to move there, but simply due to so many various matters these days, we kept being delayed and have not moved yet. Since we are now blessed with such a momentous occasion, why not vacate that grand mansion for Fengju's wife's use? Though the female performers are artists, all of them are from the palace, and with their background, we cannot treat them carelessly, lest they look down on our Dukedom. What do you think, Old Madam?"
Old Madam Jin smiled and said, "This is indeed a good idea. Qiuning, what do you think?"
Fu Qiuning smiled and replied, "Second Madam is too kind. However, I cannot help but feel uneasy. Because of me alone, much unrest happened throughout the estate, even delaying the Second Master and Second Madam moving in to the new residence, benefitting me instead…"
Before she could finish her sentence, Madam Fang smiled and said, "Don't say it like that. This really is a great honour and joy for all of us. If we can contribute a little, even our faces will get to enjoy some of the limelight."
Jiang Wanying beamed brightly at the room in general, "In that case, I will have someone go to the mansion to prepare the rooms and set up other necessary things for our many guests. Fortunately, there is a garden behind the house, and we have all the stages and pavilions we need. It would be the perfect place for rehearsals. We also need to arrange for servants and supplies. Ah, right, and we should set up a kitchen as well…"
Others also started to offer up their suggestions. Fu Qiuning watched in fascination as Jiang Wanying expertly navigated the talk, subtly flattering or criticising suggestions according to each lady's rank and status. Naturally, the unfavoured women of lower status kept their mouths shut aside from laughing or echoing the suggestions made by their superiors. The subtle jabs aside, it looked like most of the women were having fun if their rosy cheeks were any indication.
Fu Qiuning had no interest in the talk.
She was already busy reviewing and training musicians, dancers and singers. Want her to socialise on top of that? No, thank you.
The female chatter ended with Jiang Wanying being put in charge of the whole thing, as per her plan.
When the woman flashed a triumphant look at Fu Qiuning, she beamed back gently, silently thanking this ambitious woman for taking up that enormous responsibility.
"Will you not accompany Wan girl to oversee the matter? After all, you are the one who has spent a long time with those singers and dancers. If anything happens, you will be the one who understands it better. Otherwise, there might be some oversights." Madam Jiang suddenly spoke up.
Fu Qiuning smiled, "I fear I will only cause trouble with my meddling. I have no experience in household matters."
Madam Jiang looked taken aback for a moment but nodded stiffly at her reply.
She stared at Fu Qiuning for a long moment, thinking: This woman must have taken Fengju's soul away with her talents. My dear son may be immune to good looks, but is not immune to good songs. If this is how she had lured him in… well, even the palace was enchanted by her tricks. At least she still has the decency to not meddle in household matters.
A little while later, word arrived that the palace musicians and performers had reached the estate. Fu Qiuning thought it over for a moment before leaving with Jiang Wanying to greet them. At the very least, she should be there as part of the welcome wagon for the people she had been working closely with for the past couple of months, if not to handle the logistics.
It turned out that the palace had sent along 20 to 30 palace maids to serve and accompany the performers and musicians. All of their luggage, including clothes, costumes, musical instruments and even bedding and more was brought in. There were also two eunuchs within the entourage. The eunuchs came forward to state that there was no need for the Duke of Jing's estate to worry about money or provisions for their 'guests' as the palace would prepare everything. There were even 3 or 5 chefs in the group. In the end, there was really nothing much for Jiang Wanying to do aside from escorting the group to the newly renovated estate next door.
The whole thing was rather a hassle. In addition to organising the rooms for the musicians and performers, rooms had to be found for the many maids and servants, as well as a large kitchen for the chefs. Moreover, the men and women had to be split up. Thankfully, there were not too many actual men and the two eunuchs were sharp and experienced enough to organise everything between themselves.
There were female officials too and they couldn't sleep in the same place as the palace entertainers, so there's that bit of headache as well. Everyone was very polite and agreeable. To Fu Qiuning, it was almost like watching a bunch of excited kids on a field trip settling down with their minders. She left all the pointing and ordering to Jiang Wanying, concentrating only on conferring some small matters with the musicians and checking with them on their music while the singers found corners to train their voices in the meantime.
Once everything had been settled, a large group of people marched back to the Duke of Jing's main estate to greet Old Madam Jin. It was an incredibly busy and pointless afternoon. Fu Qiuning had no idea why anyone would move an entire performance troupe, plus servants, into a completely different location to practice a 'secret performance' when she could have just commuted alone to the palace every day. However, she was not the boss, so she didn't worry about it anymore.
By the time Fu Qiuning was able to ditch the lot of them, it was past lunchtime. She was welcomed by Concubine Luo and Concubine Yu, who promptly ordered a meal to be prepared in the personal kitchen. Fu Qiuning merely waved her hand and said, "I'm too tired for a proper meal. Just have the maids bring in some snacks."
Jian Feng and Yu Jie hurried off, returning with freshly made, steamed Flower Rolls made with schmaltz (chicken oil), White Sugar Cakes, Jujube Pastries and other small but filling snacks.
After picking through the snacks, Fu Qiuning settled down for a well-deserved afternoon nap.
Things will become hectic again soon, but let's look at the positives. At least she did not have to commute early. Surely the Emperor must have suggested this move as some kind of 'reward' for Jin Fengju, or that Jin Fengju had 'hinted' for the Empress Dowager to do this as a way to mitigate her 'hard work'. Work that he had foisted upon her because of his shit-stirring tendency, by the way.
The only saving grace to that whole thing was that she could sing and dance to her heart's content without people giving her the side eye.
Well, she would still get the envious side eyes, just not the suspicious kinds. Then again, she could sing and dance to her heart's content back at Night Breeze Pavilion without having to train an entire troupe of singers and dancers. The only good thing about this was… she could go back to teaching opera. Although her skills were training children in singing and not… everything else.
Once the musicians and performers settled in, Fu Qiuning saw more traffic stomping in and out of Elegant Mansion.
That's right, in addition to having to labour every day to teach the performers, she still had to entertain visitors in the form of household maids from various other courtyards and rooms, all coming to coax Fu Qiuning into singing a few lines for them so that they could boast about it during their inevitable meet up at Old Madam Jin's place. It was incredibly noisy and annoying.
Eventually, two months passed just like that.
The weather remained hot, but a bout of autumn showers cooled the air a little. Still, the rain hampered full-scale training since they could not perform in a large hall, not without revealing too much of the end product. This meant that there were a few parts that could not be rehearsed together.
Still, it was good enough to pass since no one would know whether the opera was fully completed or not.
One of the female officials reported to Fu Qiuning that the Empress had been itching to watch the play, but was forced to be patient since she could not easily leave the palace grounds and, [e] shockingly enough, the entire palace troupe dedicated for this new opera had been moved out of her reach.
Fu Qiuning found herself rolling her eyes at that. Either the move was an unsanctioned one by the Emperor, or the Empress Dowager had accidentally shot herself in the foot with this 'benevolent' gesture. Frankly, she couldn't care less. The Empress Dowager would just have to be patient along with the rest of the people pestering her.
"Has everything been rehearsed? Do you need to do anything else?"
Like the rest of the people waiting for this opera to happen, Concubine Yu and Concubine Luo were anxious for updates on the project. They were especially anxious due to the past few days' unrelenting rain.
Fu Qiuning made some calculations as she watched the rain drizzling outside.
The performers were all professionals and knew each other's skills and idiosyncrasies well. The musicians had to be told to take breaks every now and then to preserve their strength. To her amusement, they took this as a hint to oil or polish their instruments. Well, who was she to tell them to be less diligent?
As for herself, there was really nothing much for her to do except send a couple of maids to the next-door estate to tell the people to 'practice, but not too much' whenever the rain was heavy enough to be a nuisance. Otherwise, she spent her time chatting idly with Concubine Luo and Concubine Yu.
"We are only a few lines away from finishing, no need to rush," Fu Qiuning smiled. There was no need to tell them about all the intricate details behind that conclusion.
Concubine Yu and Concubine Luo sighed. Concubine Yu looked out at the pattering rain and said, "Didn't you say that the Young Marquis would be back in a month? Isn't it close to two months now?"
Luo'shi said, "Didn't he encounter danger at Jiangnan before? What if…"
"Hush!" Concubine Yu hissed.
Fu Qiuning sipped her tea, pretending not to see the little play that was happening right in front of her. When the ladies changed the subject, she followed along, letting others carry the bulk of the chatter.
The ladies were still chatting when she heard noises from the outside. Looking at the still heavy rain, she muttered, "Who on earth is visiting at this time?"
"Reporting to Madam, Elder Sister Luo Cui has arrived," a junior maid announced. As if to prove her words, Luo Cui entered the inner room still a little damp, but mostly dry, with shoes that did not match the rest of her clothes. She must have left her raincoat and wooden clogs at the entrance.
Luo Cui beamed and said, "Madam and the concubines, please hurry over to the main courtyard."
"What happened? Has the Princess Consort arrived?" Fu Qiuning asked. She thought: That person did sort of threaten to come and 'sort things out' with her, whatever that meant.
Luo Cui's lips pursed into a splinter of delightful titters, making the slightly dreary room sparkle with her laughter. Clearly, there was a reason why Old Madam Jin kept that young girl by her side. "No, no, it's not the Princess Consort. If the Princess Consort really came, it would have caused an even bigger commotion~"
"… I see." In fact, Fu Qiuning had no idea what this maid was talking about, but she would just roll with it and laugh too. She had learnt that laughing along with Luo Cui's cue was the best way to keep Old Madam Jin happy, and the habit stuck.
After laughing, Luo Cui said, "If it was the Princess Consort, wouldn't we need a month to prepare for it? After all, a prince's status is not much lower than the Emperor's. When it comes to a family visit, only Elder Madam is allowed to visit, how could a Princess Consort be allowed to carelessly visit her maternal home? That's right, Madam should hurry and be ready. You shall find out the good news that awaits you when you arrive."
Fu Qiuning noticed that this clever maid was urging only her and not even looking at Concubine Luo or Concubine Yu. The two older ladies were also socially savvy enough to take the hint and they pretended to be part of the background. That's right, rank and status were everything in this era. She was the favoured one in this estate, not only by the most capable 'Young Master' but also by the Emperor and Empress Dowager. Who would dare slight her now? Not to mention, she had the advantage of being the 'official wife' on top of everything.
Her own blood mother was nothing more than the vessel that carried her to term and gave birth to her, but her status as 'brood mare' could only push her as high as a 'concubine' and nothing else. Even Fu Qiuning's di-born sister was nothing more than that with her belly nourished by Prince Lie's seed. The moment the Old Madam dies and Elder Madam Jiang takes over, who knows what will happen to her?
Fu Qiuning changed into something more suitable for the main courtyard and readied herself to brave the rain. Yu Jie had propped open an oiled paper umbrella for her, but Fu Qiuning took it from her saying, "Take one for yourself, it's better for us to have one umbrella each."
For some reason, Yu Jie giggled at this and nudged Luo Cui with her elbow. Fu Qiuning frowned but said nothing. On the way, Yu Jie sidled up to Fu Qiuning to say, "Goodness, these umbrellas are so ugly! Aren't they so very ugly, Sister Luo Cui?"
Luo Cui laughed her sparkling laughter and said, "Indeed, they are too ugly. Ah, how I wish we had some of those lovely peach and willow-green oil-paper umbrellas from Jiangnan~"
"Oh my, how lovely that would be~ Speaking of which, I heard that something special arrived today~?"
Fu Qiuning would have to be an absolute idiot to not know what these two were talking about.
In fact, let's continue to be an idiot.
When Fu Qiuning did not pick up on the very obvious hint, the silence became awkward. So much so that Yu Jie could not help herself and gave a little screech, exclaiming dramatically, "Could it be… the Young Marquis had returned? And… with oil-paper umbrellas? Could this be true, Sister Luo Cui?"
Luo Cui slumped her shoulders even more dramatically as she launched into her monologue, "'Tis true, and I cannot lie. Madam's long-awaited person has returned! The Young Marquis came home with some speciality products from the Western Regions, and among them were two large boxes of oil-paper umbrellas! As soon as they were taken out, everyone fell in love with the intricate patterns and paintings. Second Madam and the concubines immediately snatched a few on the spot! Madam should hurry lest there won't be any left when you arrive."
"Is that so? That would be too bad indeed," said Fu Qiuning when the pause went on for too long.
"Oh, is madam not interested in the beautiful umbrellas?" she tittered, still trying to get a reaction out of Fu Qiuning.
Yu Jie chuckled, "Elder Sister is mistaken! How could the Master let Madam fight with the rest of the ladies for an umbrella? Master must have reserved a few special ones just for Madam and the box is now on its way to Elegant Mansion~"
The fact that Yu Jie was probably right somehow irritated Fu Qiuning. "Enough with your nonsense," she muttered.
Luo Cui laughed and said, "There is no need for Madam to worry, I am afraid that is exactly what Master has planned. However, don't worry, Even if Yu Jie has let it slip, I will make sure to keep it a secret for you. I won't let them snatch your things." She laughed again, sprinting forward in the rain, clearly very happy with her parting shot. Yu Jie cried out something unintelligible and started running after her, leaving Fu Qiuning to walk slowly in the rain.
When they arrived at Health & Longevity Court, the rain had gotten much heavier. However, even the pattering of rain could not drown out the sparkling laughter coming from the living room. Servant girls watching the gates soon spotted Fu Qiuning and quickly came forward to assist her in entering and removing her raincoat and umbrella.
After removing her wooden clogs at the door, Fu Qiuning stepped inside to see the main character of the day sitting right beside Old Madam Jin. He looked thinner and a little browner than usual. She thought: Good, I should not be the only one to suffer for your folly.
Feeling satisfied, she greeted Old Madam Jin and Madam Jiang calmly, completely ignoring the man who was now shooting beams of delight at her with his eyes.
Old Madam Jin, sensing Jin Fengju's happiness at seeing this wife, spoke up, "Fengju must be tired. Qiuning, take him back and properly arrange for his bath and meals. Just look at him, after two months on the road, he has become this thin. These days, send some more meat, eggs, fish, and shrimp to the side kitchen. I still have some ginseng…"
Before Old Madam Jin could finish, Jin Fengju chuckled, "Why would I need to leech off Old Ancestor? Right when I replied to the imperial decree at the palace, they already rewarded me with tonics. I will even send some to Old Ancestor to show my gratitude." He stood up, bid farewell to Old Madam Jin, and left.
Fu Qiuning, Jiang Wanying, and the others followed him outside. Jin Fengju said to his wives and concubines, "I have already ordered the items for you all to be delivered to your respective courtyards. If you are not too tired, let us go to the Elegant mansion together. During the days where I have been away, it must have troubled all of you much."
Jiang Wanying was naturally unhappy to see the husband, who had doted on her for the first five to six years of her marriage, paying attention solely to the once-abandoned wife. Even so, she had to grit her teeth and stand aside, because even though she was the granddaughter of a duke, she had married into this family as a second wife and therefore, according to etiquette, she should greet the official wife at her courtyard along with Concubine Huo, Concubine Cui and Lesser Concubine Yue Lan.
Not to mention, she had angered Jin Fengju a few times already after he caught her trying to get rid of that woman in the first place. Even so, she could not show any of her dissatisfaction on her face when faced with her husband. She could only smile and say, "If that's the case, since we must also greet my elder sister, let us all adjourn to her place."
Fu Qiuning was already annoyed by the excessive attention from Jin Fengju, and having Jiang Wanying, this obvious nemesis, beam that sweet smile at her felt even more creepy. However, she had no choice since this was all 'according to etiquette', especially since Jin Fengju's other wives and concubines were all thirsty for the very sight of him.
Jin Yanfang, who entered the room later along with the Feng Sisters, turned to them and said loudly, "Well, Second Brother just arrived home today and is surrounded by his wives and concubines, there is no reason for the rest of us to stay and trouble their reunion. I shall come and visit my sister-in-law tomorrow to see if I can pick up anything that can block the wind and rain."
Several people laughed at that.
Jiang Wanying's suggestion to visit Elegant Mansion was neatly set aside by that joke as everyone started talking about the oil-paper umbrellas again. In the end, only the two of them left Old Madam's place for Elegant Mansion under a cloud of sparkling laughter.
"As the saying goes, 'A long separation is more loving than a new marriage'," said Jin Fengju as soon as they stepped into the courtyard of Elegant Mansion. The rain had stopped by then and the rooms had been lit with candlelight. Fu Qiuning did not know what to say to that, since she could not say that she had been enjoying the time he was not around.
Undeterred by her silence, he scuttled closer and stroked her cheek with a sigh, "You have thinned down so much, you must have had it hard these days."
Fu Qiuning stepped back from his hands and smiled defensively, "I have already heard this many times already. I trust you still remember just who it was who caused me to suffer these hard days?"
Jin Fengju laughed, "Goodness me, are you still angry about that? Surely must have also enjoyed the great benefits of being favoured by the palace? Come now, aren't you sorry for me? I've been running around all day under the hot sun and was tanned to this point. Have I not lost weight too?"
"The sun is the same everywhere. Surely there is no difference?"
Jin Fengju could not help but feel a little frustrated and amused by Fu Qiuning's inability to be honest with her feelings. He thought: Ah, she must have been worried about me, but still refuses to say anything. How dishonest yet sweet. Should I ruin her little act?
In the end, he merely shook his head and pouted, "Why are you always like this? Why would you bully me, your beloved husband? Speaking of which, how are the children doing? Are they doing well in their studies? They have all gotten a little taller since the last time I saw them. As for that little brat Zhenyi, I see that he is not as reckless as before."
"He has a goal to strive for, one that he is working towards. With the autumn wind blowing in, it would be a good time to find an opportunity to visit the farmstead. Otherwise, with the Mid-Autumn Festival coming up, who knows just how busy I would be with the All Nations Cultural Festival? I fear that once all the events are over, it will be too cold to visit the farmstead," Fu Qiuning finished with a side glance at Jin Fengju, already anticipating some resistance to this suggestion.
Jin Fengju nodded and said, "I understand, I just came back from the Western Region after solving the matter at Softstone Kingdom. After giving Heartwind Kingdom a shock, they won't dare to cause trouble at the borders for the time being. The Emperor was very happy with my work and bestowed a few days of vacation for me. Now that your affairs have settled, why not arrange for an outing to the farmstead in the next two days?"
Fu Qiuning thought: You want me to die by making Jiang Wanying angry by taking matters into my hands on something like this? No way, you can go and confront that woman yourself.
Out loud, she said, "You should speak to Second Madam Wan about these things. I have no authority over household matters."
Jin Fengju beamed ingratiatingly, "I have always wanted to give you authority, but you keep refusing to take responsibility. What a pity, ah. That's right, did my aunt come by to visit during my absence? I believe she would not come due to her status, but then again, I never thought that Jiang Wanying would be so childish. I really cannot predict what she would do next."
Fu Qiuning gave him a half-hearted glare. She already knew that he only paid attention to things that would benefit him, but that he would throw all of Jiang Wanying's actions under the banner of 'so childish' when he was the one at fault was truly disgusting.
"She did, my poor mother was sick, so she left soon after."
"Goodness," Jin Fengju said. Unable to think of what to say, he repeated, "Goodness, mother-in-law's health is so… delicate. Well, just as well, my aunt was born into a prestigious family and married into such a prominent household. It is good that she did not make a fuss. I am relieved. Well, as a smart person, she should know that you are now the Empress Dowager and Emperor's most favoured person and she would not wish to offend such a great figure."
"What great figure? What do you think would happen to me after the All Nations Cultural Festival ends?"
Jin Fengju, "Well, of course, that…"
Fu Qiuning watched as he floundered for an answer, not bothering to give him a hint, waiting to see what he would do.
"Well," Jin Fengju beamed, "since my Qiuning does not wish to assume authority over household matters, surely you wish to fill in your time in other ways? After all, you have over 20 operas in your head… Surely it would not be a bad thing to come up with one or two operas a year and work with the palace troupe? That way, your favour with the Empress Dowager will never fade for as long as you have new operas to train, yes?"
FU Qiuning thought: This fellow is certainly clever, look how he made it sound like he is doing me a favour by 'letting' me reveal my opera to the public while he danced around on the side and reap the benefits. Fine, so long as I have my opera and the favour of the Empress Dowager, it would be difficult for anyone in his family to touch me carelessly.
Having made her decision, she nodded carefully.
A delighted Jin Fengju immediately hugged her tightly, freaking her out a little as he kissed her cheek and said, "Look how long we spent talking! You must be half frozen from walking in the rain! You may feel fine now because you're young, but you must take care of your body!"
"I did hard labour for over five years at-"
Jin Fengju hastily interrupted, "What's more, we have to prepare for our trip to the farmstead! I will arrange everything; you can just sit here and wait to set out!"
Fu Qiuning was already used to his evasive ways and maintained a stony silence.
"M-moreover, didn't you ask me to keep an eye out for a good person for Yu Jie? I happen to have a good candidate at hand and found someone."
"I see."
Jin Fengju quickly beamed and said, "While I was in the Western Regions, I interacted with those soldiers every day and got to know them quite well. Among them was a guard I thought would be a good fit. You know how most of these imperial guards are descendants of rich or noble families, right? It is rare for a commoner to be chosen. However, this fellow is an exception; he was originally part of General Liang's private bodyguards. When he was younger, his family could not support him due to his strength and appetite and he was eventually sold to the general's mansion as a slave.
As a strong young man, he was naturally drawn to martial arts. He only had to watch how the other bodyguards practice their martial arts to pick up their skills. General Liang liked him for his intelligence and willingness to learn and took him as part of his entourage wherever he went. One time, he happened to catch the eye of Prince Rong while hunting and was personally recommended by the prince to the emperor, which was how he joined the Imperial Guard.
I see that he is a very ambitious and good person. His only drawback is his poor family background. He has paid off his slave debt through his salary. however, because he was not the kind to show off, no one aside from his parents and close comrades knew that he had jumped over the dragon's gate. I mentioned Yu Jie's matter to him the other day, worried that he may dislike Yu Jie for her slave status. However, it turned out that he did not mind at all and was in fact very happy as he had not received any marriage proposal yet due to his poor family background. It is best to seize him right now, otherwise, once news gets around about how successful he has become, there would be no end of people coming to propose to him."
Fu Qiuning blinked slowly at this long speech. It… sounded like Jin Fengju was almost desperate to have this guard marry Yu Jie. Was he trying to tie a promising and ambitious young imperial guard to the Jin Clan? Also, this poor guard sounded kind of like someone who would be blindly loyal to their family, which would certainly be an advantage no matter what. Since he was from a disadvantageous background, he would be even more willing to enter the Jin Clan's servitude…
She must have been silent for too long because Jin Fengju started talking again, "He is from a poor family and you are not the shy type. I say, on this trip to the farmstead, why don't I make arrangements to take him with me and allow you to have a look at him with Yu Jie? If you are satisfied, we shall settle the matter, what about it?"
While it was certainly suspicious why Jin Fengju would be so desperate to make this connection, Fu Qiuning could not be bothered to think too long about it. If Yu Jie had been unwaveringly loyal, she might have reason to say something. However, that maid of hers had long since switched her allegiance to Jin Fengju, so why would she care one way or the other?
Naturally, since the husband and wife had been apart for so long, Jin Fengju would be eager for sex. She had to save her energy for that and did not argue further. Fortunately, the travel must have tired him out since there were no sexual advances that night. Fu Qiuning stared at the ceiling, her body in the embrace of the man beside her as she vaguely contemplated what kind of disaster the next day would bring now that the Jin Clan golden boy had returned home.
The next day, Jin Fengju reported his upcoming plans for a farmstead visit to Old Madam Jin. Seeing her grandson so enthusiastic, there was no reason for Old Madam Jin to stop him, nor did she have any intention of stopping him. The only remark she made was that anyone who wished could go with him, but that she was old and would prefer not to make the journey.
Madam Jiang was indifferent to all the matters that did not coincide with her interest, electing to 'not join in the fun'. Instead, she generously encouraged the younger maids and servants to accompany him for a nice and relaxing trip. Madam Fang and He'shi also did not wish to join. In the end, 'only' Fu Qiuning, Jiang Wanying, Concubine Huo, Concubine Huo, Yue Lan, and more than twenty maids and servants, young and grown, ended up going for the farmstead trip.
Jiang Wanying knew the true purpose of that trip and took advantage of the lack of attention to approach Fu Qiuning. She coldly snarked, "Elder Sister, you truly are a most virtuous and kind-hearted person. Despite how Concubine Xu treated you, you remain benevolent and generous with your favours. But I, your younger sister, do not believe that you are truly so magnanimous. In this day and age, it seems that hypocrites and villains are the most favoured. By feigning such a virtuous appearance, Elder Sister appears to have captured Lord Husband's heart, no? Nowadays, aside from Elder Sister, does he still recall anyone else?"
Fu Qiuning [a] looked at Jiang Wanying with a pitying gaze which made her squirm with discomfort. Finally, Fu Qiuning could only say, It is as you say. A person's motive is difficult to discern. If one's actions determine one's behaviour, a virtuously acting person could still be considered virtuous. That is all I have to say."
She meant everything she said with all her heart, however, it looked like Jiang Wanying took her words the wrong way, because instead of looking relieved, she looked even angrier. In fact, she was almost green-faced with anger.
Later, Jiang Wanying became even more angry because the duty of arranging the trip to the village which should have fallen to her, the housekeeper of the family, was taken up by Jin Fengju. Who would have thought that a simple task like planning for a trip to the village would be done by the head of the household and not the woman in charge of the housekeeping? If anyone were to hear that, who knows what kind of expression they would make?
On the other hand, Fu Qiuning was too lazy to concern herself with the drama addicts of this Jin family. She had no idea how well Jin Fengju could organise the trip, but she should at least give some orders to her maids to pack certain food and supplies for the children. If Jiang Wanying had been the one to organise it, she could at least feel a little more at ease. As for the children, she decided not to tell them yet, otherwise, Jin Zhenyi might act out too much and get himself into trouble before they even set out.
Instead, she made her way over to the former Marquis of Xianyang's mansion, now the Jin Mansion, to meet with the performers and musicians. She would have to make some arrangements here too before she set out for the farmstead trip.
Before she even stepped into the garden, the sound of sizhu tickled her ears, accompanied by beautiful singing. After going through another door and rounding a corner into a wide courtyard, she was met with performers flitting about the stage in their beautiful billowing sleeves and flight-like dances that made them look like fluttering butterflies. Their movements were elegant and gorgeous, and their beautiful figures and supple bodies made for an enchanting sight. Even though she was the one who taught them these movements, it was quite a sight to see actual performers carrying out the actions on stage.
Knowing that she had taught and passed down those skills herself, Fu Qiuning couldn't help feeling a sense of pride and satisfaction.
"Goodness, Madam has arrived?"
A few sharp-eyed performers noticed her and, hearing this comment, everyone immediately stopped what they were doing to gather around Fu Qiuning. After all, this person was their great benefactor, it would do well for them to curry favour with her. Not to mention, she was a strict but fair person who valued only their talents and did not put on airs when around them. A rarity indeed.
When Official Lin approached, Fu Qiuning smiled and said, "I shall be leaving the estate tomorrow. I will most likely be back the day after tomorrow at the earliest, perhaps late afternoon. Continue to practice diligently. I shall come and teach everyone the final parts of this opera once I return. After that, we may petition to perform before the Empress Dowager and the Emperor after everyone has mastered it."
Everyone hastily gave their thanks.
After all, who were they to criticise a noblewoman who was willing to teach them her secret skills for taking a few days' leave after coming here so diligently? Nothing but gratitude and good wishes such as 'Safe travels' and 'Godspeed' filled their lips as they saluted her with reverence. Fu Qiuning had no idea whether to laugh or cry at their earnest wishes.
How to put it?
It felt like they were sending her off for college or something, perhaps even to a foreign university where neither would meet for years and years…
Back at Elegant Mansion, Fu Qiuning spoke briefly with Concubine Luo and Concubine Yu about the farmstead trip to see if they were interested in going since they rarely got to see anywhere outside of their own courtyard. Concubine Yu was neutral about the trip since she had spent part of her life living a hard life in one, but Concubine Luo was more excited about that unexpected trip outside of a noble estate.
The ladies were just discussing the matter when a maid came in to report that Concubine Huo had arrived.
Concubine Luo commented, "Goodness, that person has been here bearing gifts so many times that one has to wonder just what her intentions are." She slid a gaze towards Fu Qiuning, but said nothing when Fu Qiuning did not answer.
Instead, it was Concubine Yu who timidly said, "The Madam has returned her gifts with jewellery, therefore, there is no debt between the sisters. Hence, there should be no expectations."
Fu Qiuning sighed, "There is no doubt that she comes here with ulterior motives. Just let her in and let us see what she brings us today."
Concubine Huo had arrived with a delicate-looking jewellery box on the living room table. She smiled at Fu Qiuning and said "These are some trinkets my family sent me the other day. I know Elder Sister doesn't lack these now, and I don't even know how many valuable gifts Lord Husband has given you. However, though they might not be worth much, the designs are unique. The other day, I was deeply moved when Elder Sister gave me that pair of jade bracelets. I simply felt uneasy about it, so I hope Elder Sister can accept these trinkets as a token of my gratitude. This is just a small gesture from me."
Fu Qiuning nodded for
Yu Jie to accept the gifts.
Then, the two of them sat down to start yet another roundabout chat that was mainly about her lack of interest in snatching authority from Jiang Wanying. She thought: Are you kidding me? Do you want me to die from overwork looking after this chicken coop and the random hens fighting over one cock on top of my opera teaching? Go die.
As usual, Concubine Huo eventually took the hint and excused herself after sitting around for a little while longer.
Back inside, Yu Jie and Jian Feng carried the jewellery box into the inner room and laughed, "Madam, the way you spoke just now, it is as if you almost directly told Concubine Huo that she has hugged the wrong thigh. Looking at her expression, we maids couldn't help but laugh until our bellies hurt." As they spoke, the maids opened the box, and indeed, they found several pieces of unique jewellery such as hairpins, hair clasps, rings, and others. However, they were all made from materials like gold, silver, and jade, nothing too extraordinary.
Fu Qiuning blinked at the nasty words spewing out of those maids' mouths. No matter what, Concubine Huo's position was still higher than theirs…
"Yi? Are these a pair of coral earrings?"
Suddenly, Yu Jie snatched up two small items. When Fu Qiuning looked over, she laughed and said, "Believe it or not, these items are still quite uncommon. Only, it is a shame that Madam doesn't have the fortune to enjoy them. A few days ago, Master gave you a string of coral bead necklace, and Madam liked them indeed, but after wearing them for less than three days, your neck turned red and itchy. It turns out Madam's skin is a bit sensitive. Tsk tsk, this Concubine Huo's kindness is about to go to waste."
If that wasn't a hint, she did not know what it was.
Casting a side eye at the maid, Fu Qiuning smiled and said, "Though I can't use these coral items, they suit you just fine. Coincidentally, your Master needs you for something, and I find these earrings exquisite. Why don't you wear them when we go to the village this time?"
However, Yu Jie rolled her eyes and pouted, "Forget it, forget it. This maid is not fortunate enough to enjoy Concubine Huo's good things. Besides, when she turns around and finds out, who knows what she will mutter about Madam. Why would I make Madam suffer by inviting the curses of such a scheming person?" She then placed the jewellery back into the box.
But Jian Feng took them out again, saying, "Since Madam is sensitive against these, it is better not to put them with the other jewellery. What if one day a maid put these on Madam while Madam is absorbed in thinking about opera? Wouldn't Madam suffer?"
Hearing that, Yu Jie also remembered the times when Fu Qiuning recited opera lines while looking into the bronze mirror, her eyes staring into a distance, completely ignoring her appearance. They both laughed at the thought and wrapped the coral earrings in a piece of cloth. Seeing a box filled with expensive silk and new clothing, they placed it at the bottom of the box of clothes and locked it up again. Jian Feng said, "Actually, there is no need to be this cautious either. In any case, Madam already has more jewellery than she can wear. Why would she even bother using Concubine Huo's?"
Look at these maids being both condescending and prideful at the same time, thought Fu Qiuning. Though she did not quite approve of this back-talking, there was no harm in letting them boast a little.
Just then, footsteps were heard, and Jin Changfeng rushed in with the rest of the children. Jin Zhenyi was walking in with sedate steps, but even that could not disguise his excitement.
After all, their father just came back from work yesterday, had spent a night with their Honourable Mother, coupled with the news they heard at school today…
"I heard that we will be going on a trip to the farmstead?"
Fu Qiuning smiled and said, "Indeed, you heard right."
Suddenly, Jin Zhenyi jumped up, punched the air, and wriggled about in excitement before throwing himself to the floor in front of Fu Qiuning, nearly bouncing his forehead off the floor as he exclaimed, "Mother, you kept your promises! I am convinced today. I promise I will behave and never say anything bad about you again. I…"
"Yes," said Fu Qiuning vaguely. "I kept my promises."
She smiled and said, "As a man, no, as a person of integrity, you should strive to do your best to keep your promises as much as possible and not go back on your word just because it inconveniences you. Remember also that your mother's fate depends on your behaviour, alright?"
Jin Zhenyi naturally agreed to everything Fu Qiuning said at that moment. He nodded vigorously as Fu Qiuning continued, "Alright, Zhenyi and Third Young Miss, go and have your maids prepare your clothes for tomorrow. You too, Changfeng, Changjiao. Yu Jie, stay behind."
After the children acknowledged her instructions, they each went their separate ways. Yu Jie stared in the direction where Jin Zhenyi and Jin Xiunan disappeared off to, waiting until they had disappeared from sight before muttering, "This maid really doesn't understand Madam. Concubine Xu never showed any kindness to Madam and even tried to frame you. Why are you so benevolent to her? While it is said that benevolent people beget no enemies, Madam's kindness seems almost too virtuous. This maid can't help but feel that Madam's kindness is wasted on them."
Fu Qiuning shrugged and said, "Why are you being so angry? She is still Brother Yi and Third Young Miss' mother. Have you forgotten this ?"
What else could Yu Jie do but giggle in reply?
What her mistress said were facts. Although she hated those petty villains, it was not to the point of wanting them to be badly treated. She had brought up the matter as a way to gossip with Fu Qiuning and get closer to her, since it felt like her mistress had been distancing herself from the maids. Nothing like trash-talking an enemy to build connections, right?
However, Fu Qiuning effectively cut off that line of chatter with that simple reply. What else could she do but titter and ask, "Madam asked me to stay back, do you have any orders for me?"
Fu Qiuning studied Yu Jie for a moment before saying, "You said that you were abducted and sold into slavery as a child, yes?"
"Yes, Madam," said Yu Jie, uncertain why her mistress would ask her this now. Could it be…
"The Young Marquis has found a candidate as your marriage partner. He is a freed commoner who achieved the position of Imperial Guard on his own merit. What do you think?"
"Madam…"
For some reason, instead of looking happy, Yu Jie looked a little pensive instead. "What now? Do you already have someone in your heart?"
"No, no, it's just… I know my own situation well. I am but a slave girl whereas the other side is an Imperial Guard. Does the family know? Even if they don't, would they accept me once they know? Not to mention, if he wishes to advance his position, it would be better for him to marry well…"
"… I agree, it is better to remain unmarried than to be stuck in an unhappy marriage," said Fu Qiuning. Some measure of sympathy for this maid of hers emerged in her heart.
No matter what she had done in the past year, selling her mistress out for gold leaves and such, this maid had stayed with the original Fu Qiuning for over a year before that poor woman hung herself out of depression and neglect.
That's right, she should strive to never forget that poor woman. Aside from herself, who else would remember her? Speaking of which, should she light some incense for the original!Fu Qiuning? At least, she had brought that woman's mother and a companion out of King Zhenjiang's palace. If nothing else, she could help that unhappy woman look after her mother…
"Madam, rather than getting married, I want to stay by your side forever!" Yu Jie suddenly declared, interrupting her dark thoughts.
Fu Qiuning looked at this young, earnest-looking girl and chuckled, "Now that's a fine thought. Still, it is better for women in these times to get married to a good man if possible. That person will be accompanying us to the farmstead. I shall arrange for a meeting. You may decide for yourself if you wish to make the connection."
That's right, there was no need to waste words on that matter. It all depended on the character of the person. If the man proved to be the quietly vicious, ambitious type, even she would not easily relinquish a partway loyal maid into his hands. She owed this maid 5+1 years of Fu Qiuning's life, so one year of disloyalty should not blind her to that.
Despite all her talk about remaining by her mistress' side, Yu Jie still looked flushed and excited. Well, she was a young woman after all and the prospect of a family, possibly romance and children, could only fill her with anticipation.
As for Yu Jie, she had made up her mind to tell Fu Qiuning that she would never marry and would stay with her mistress forever!
Eventually, Jin Fengju returned.
Yu Jie hurried off to make tea for the master.
Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao had never left the estate in their entire lives, having spent their first few years being [3b] abused by their blood mother and neglected by their own father before being shipped over to an abandoned wife's courtyard. Later, even after they were acknowledged, Jin Fengju was too busy with everything else to take them anywhere. Fu Qiuning had no support from her maternal side, which was why they ended up never leaving the estate, not even to the streets where the servants sometimes go to buy soymilk or sell the ladies' embroideries.
Therefore, they were naturally very happy and excited to go out, even though Jin Changfeng expressed concern over his mother and grandmother visiting a 'farmstead' which he understood to be a terrible place which they had been banished to before. This belief was further strengthened by Jin Fengju's action of banishing Concubine Xu and her children's obvious sadness.
Thus, it was with mixed feelings that the people went to bed that night.
The next day, several large carriages had been prepared at the entrance of the estate. Jin Fengju was on a horse and Fu Qiuning had one carriage to herself, together with the four children as well as Yu Jie and Jian Feng.
Jiang Wanying and the concubines, as well as Jin Fengju's other children, occupied other carriages, with more carts and carriages carrying bedding, clothes and other items deemed necessary for a farmstead visit.
Thus, an entourage of carriages left the Duke of Jing's estate in a grand manner for the outskirts of the Capital.
Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao were naturally very excited to travel outside. After they left the area cordoned off for noble mansions and rich aristocrats, the streets became livelier with vendors selling various snacks and jewellery coming into view. There were even performers in colourful costumes executing impressive acrobatic feats for money.
While they were being dazzled by the sight, Jin Fengju came over with a few sugar figurines
and handed one to each other the four children. "Here, try this. I used to eat them all the while. It was usually made by the cooks at home. I rarely buy them on the street."
Fu Qiuning looked at the shining faces of the children, then at the beautifully blown glass sugar figurines. Though she was a little hesitant about hygiene here, surely it would be alright?
The two older ones had had a hard life with her and should be more robust. Jin Zhenyi looked like he would chew up insects on a dare. The only one she was truly worried for was Jin Xiunan…
Still, it would not do to leave anyone out. Instead, she smiled and said, "Everyone, take one. You must leave the rest for your other brothers and sisters."
Jin Zhenyi looked reluctant, but took one only.
Naturally, Jin Fengju made her simple remark all about him as he chuckled and said, "Surely there's no need for you to remind me? Can't I think for myself?"
Fu Qiuning gave him a blank look, to which he returned with another hearty laughter before spurring his horse towards the other carriages.
All too soon, the carriages left the busy streets and were passing through the city gates. Fu Qiuning, Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao had a sudden intake of breath as the walls disappeared, leaving no obstruction to a vast landscape of majestic mountains, a clear river winding like a jade belt, nodding flowers and lush waving grasses. Their carriage was not the only one with windows drawn open, with the concubines and children in other carriages also looking outside with awe. It was an incredible scene for the ones who grew up stuck inside an estate.
Jin Fengju smiled at her reaction and said, "After the All Nations Cultural Festival, we may have a few vassal kings who would prefer to stay a little longer. The Emperor may invite them to participate in the autumn hunt. Feng'er is now almost 10 years old. I will bring him with me this time…"
True to his precocious attitude, Jin Zhenyi suddenly piped up and said, "Although my brother is older than me, he can't ride a horse or shoot arrows as well as me. Take me instead, Father!"
Jin Fengju spluttered, how dare this child interrupt his attempt at charming Qiuning? He said irritably, "Just because you can ride a little pony and shoot a little bow, you have the nerve to claim yourself good at both? What's more, you only turn eight this year. Still too early."
Jin Zhenyi protested, "Riding and shooting doesn't have anything to do with age! I may be only eight, but I'm about the same size as Brother Feng!"
By now, heads were poking out of the other carriages. Jin Fengju realised that due to the commotion, even Jin Zhenxuan was staring eagerly in his direction. The boys were all clearly waiting for his answer. He had accidentally stirred up a hornet's nest among his sons. Feeling a headache creeping up, he said quickly, "We will talk about it later. So long as you are obedient, Father shall consider it."
Even the usually pensive Jin Zhenxuan cheered loudly at that.
Inside the carriage, Fu Qiuning made eye contact with Jin Changfeng who coughed into his fists. Jin Changjiao smirked at Jin Xiunan who blinked back at her expressionlessly. There was a tacit understanding among all four individuals even as Jin Zhenyi started chattering excitedly about the coming autumn hunt.
It was another half-day travel before they reached the Jin Clan farmstead. The people living in the farmstead had long received news that their masters would be visiting and had made the necessary preparations. Concubine Xu was not in that village but in another about two miles away. Jin Fengju was the one who had banished Concubine Xu, so even talking about visiting that village would be impossible. When Jin Zhenyi and Jin Xiunan passed by him, he turned a blind eye at their anxious gazes.
How could the children not be anxious?
As soon as they found out that their mother was not in the village but in the village two miles away, they were unable to sit still. Even the steady Jin Xiunan was anxious. Fu Qiuning looked at the two fidgety children and said, "Stay for lunch. You should show your faces during that time at least. After that, when everyone's taking their afternoon nap, I shall make arrangements for someone to take you there."
If anything, this made them even more excited. However, they manage to calm themselves down enough to get through lunch without looking more excited than the rest.
Father was hardly looking at them, only having eyes for Honoured Mother. Though it pained them, it was not too bad since all the rest of the children were treated the same way, even Jin Changjiao and Jin Changfeng.
To distract himself, Jin Zhenyi began thinking about the coming Autumn Hunt. He knew that Father only offered to bring Brother Changfeng hunting because he wanted to curry favour with Honourable Mother. He no longer resents Brother Changfeng for receiving more attention since he knows that Brother Changfeng likes to be fair and just. The noisy one was Changjiao, who got under his skin sometimes, but was good fun most of the time since she was the one who laughed at his jokes the most whereas Xiunan would just frown and Changfeng would just smile briefly at best.
It was… nice being with his new siblings. Sometimes, he felt like he was betraying his own mother for having fun, but then Jin Zhenyi would remind himself that he was currying favour with the most powerful woman in the estate. And look! His currying has come to fruition at last! They were barely two miles away from Mother! They would be able to see Mother soon!
He had brought some gifts for her, a few things that would help her get through winter in a farmstead such as coal, bedding, warm clothing, as well as some small jewellery she could use to pawn for things if needed. It was Jin Xiunan who suggested those things and he was happy to comply. Personally, he wanted to bring Mother a horse, more servants, and maybe even some of her favourite clothes, but Xiunan had shot those down, saying that Mother had to not stand out or trouble would find her.
That was fine, especially since Xiunan had brought the matter up to Honourable Mother and she had approved of the gifts, calling Xiunan sensible and practical. She even gave the two children another bolt of cloth and a set of good candles because 'working in the dark during winter is hard on the eyes'.
He tried not to think about how Honourable Mother would know that.
Father finally stood up and gave a huge, exaggerated yawn. Mother stood with him and the two of them left the dining room for the bedrooms. She did not look back, but Jin Zhenyi noticed Yu Jie leaving in a different direction. Mother's personal maid must have gone to ensure that those 'arrangements' were being carried out properly.
Hearts beating like drums, the brother and sister sat next to each other, waiting.
Yu Jie left to meet with the guards brought over by Jin Fengju. These guards were the ones who went to the Western Region with Jin Fengju. After making his report to the Emperor, he had taken the lot with him to the farmstead, ostensibly for a 'vacation'. Although his relationship with the guards could be formed on flattery or ambition, money still had to be paid later. When Yu Jie approached them, one of the guards actually recognised her. It was Yang Ming, that unlucky fellow who played the Ghost of Night Breeze Pavilion.
He had been promoted and was now a Third Rank guard with the privilege of carrying a sword by the Emperor's side. When he saw Yu Jie, he approached her with a smile and said, "Miss Yu Jie, do you need anything?"
Yu Jie asked, "How does this gentleman know this maid's name?"
Yang Ming's smile froze. He quickly recovered and said, "The Master and Mistress asked me to pick a few people to escort Young Master Yi and Third Young Miss someplace, yes?" he was just guessing, but surely this would cover his little slip.
"Is that so? Well, Young Master Yi and Third Young Miss wish to visit a village two miles from here. Be sure that they return before the evening meal."
"Yes, I understand," said Yang Ming with a smile. He turned around to call out a few names while Yu Jie waited on the side.
Suddenly, she noticed that one of the guards appeared to be staring at her. She had no idea what to think of it at first until she remembered what Fu Qiuning had said, and then she could not help but look directly at the person, meeting the eyes of a handsome guard.
Even though Yu Jie had always been the straightforward type. She could not help but blush at that moment. She quickly thanked Yang Ming and hurried off with the selected guards. At the designated location, Bai Lu and several maidservants as well as the two siblings, were already waiting together. Just outside the gate was a black horse-drawn carriage.
Yu Jie did not go with them to the other village, merely giving Bai Lu some instructions before personally watching the carriage leave with its entourage and returning back to report to Fu Qiuning.
As for Jin Zhenyi and Jin Xiunan, their thoughts were already with their birth mother. When they arrived at the second village and the children quickly made their way to their mother's courtyard. The servants had not expected a visit from their young master and young miss. Thus, panic reigned for a while until one of the matrons took charge and led the children to their mother's room loudly calling, "Madam Concubine! Your son and daughter are here to visit you! Why don't you come and meet them?"
