Whatever Maggie was going to say as soon as the door opened dies on her tongue at the sheer heartbreak etched on ever tear stricken line of Alex's face over an angered Supergirl's shoulder and from the protective trappings of Kara's arms.
"Anyone ever tall you. You two look scary similar. Like twin level similar?" the heartbroken cop asks instead, her eyes flicking from one set of angry blue eyes to another.
"What the hell do you want, Sawyer?" Kara demands
Meekly Maggie holds up her offering of food and beer. "I wanted to talk."
Supergirl gives a forced scoff of a laugh still bluntly keeping Maggie from stepping foot into the apartment. "Then talk."
Maggie wasn't so distracted by Alex's obvious upset that she let the words escape her. Not the words themselves per say but the accented underlying behind them. The hard snapping on the 'then' making it sound more like "Zen." Or the way the hero's tongue curled around the k at the end of her ordering making it click out like only one other person in Maggie's life had achieved.
Linda.
Again, Maggie's eyes flick towards Kara and she catches the ember-like glowing in the glaring reporter's eyes as they cut into Maggie from across the separating space. No mistaking it even in the glare of her glasses. Clearly, it was taking every thread of self-control the blonde had to keep from turning a willing Maggie into a charcoaled roasted cop where she stood.
A point of interest for another time when Maggie's eyes fall back towards the object of her visit.
"With Alex." Maggie clarifies "I came to talk with Alex."
The plea-filled whisper of the name only has more seething anger radiating from the woman's unmoving protectors.
"Stairwell."
Maggie had never heard a more beautiful word as she waited on the apartment threshold. Her offering of food and liquor already stripped away by Supergirl set aside on the table beside the door as she waited for Alex's decision. If anything, she was more than a little shocked the bribes hadn't been immediately dumbed in the trash first thing.
"Please." She hears Alex whisper looking towards both her sister and Supergirl in turn as if willing them both to comply with the asking when it was clear neither was going to go along with the choice easily.
It takes a large chuck of Maggie's self-control to keep from reaching out for even the smallest brush of contact once Alex slips out of her apartment. The cop's hands fisting deep into the pockets of her leather jacket as she falls into step behind the leading woman making quick work of guiding Maggie towards the building stairwell.
She only makes it to the stairwell landing before she unloads some of her guilt as Alex hugs her arms tighter around herself on guard.
"I was an idiot alright I admit it." Maggie starts off grateful for the fact that for the moment Alex wasn't looking right at her making speech harder to grasp in the wake of the pain she'd caused the other woman. "I didn't want to get involved with someone so fresh from the boat as it were because in my experience those relationships never work out."
Alex nods in understanding at this. "I get it. You wanted to protect yourself. Protect Cole."
"God Cole." Maggie sighs running a hand through her tangled hair at the reminder of her daughter. "You know she very nearly kicked my ass when she realized I was avoiding you." The mother laughs. "She's really taken a liking to you. Almost as much as she likes Sentinel and Supergirl."
"It's easy for anyone to like Supergirl." Alex snaps her voice scratchy from crying.
"Yeah, but between us." Maggie says then pauses once she remembers the point the hero blonde was still back in Alex's apartment at this moment.
"Yeah?" Alex prods at Maggie's sudden choked words "Between us what, Sawyer?"
"Look I didn't come here to fight or for work. Or because my child asked me to check up on you or any of that." Maggie defends in a low voice.
"Then why did you come here?"
"I needed you." Alex pauses, not expecting the sheer truth of the words directed at her now as Maggie turns to face her full-on. "I needed to see you. I needed to talk with you. To try an apologize for… well…"
"You needed me?"
Maggie grins at the goofy echo of her words. "Is that so hard to understand, Danvers? I mean come on even you have to admit how adorable you are." She waves her hand at the pajama clade, tear-stained woman standing in front of her.
Alex looks down at herself self-conscious now as she runs a hand down her pajama clade self. She gasps a little in surprise when a glance back up shows just how close Maggie had gotten to her in her self-assessing state.
"All of this it's just got me thinking."
"About what?" Alex asks curiously, grateful for the support of the stairwell wall when Maggie has finished backing her against it.
"Life mostly." Maggie admits with a sigh. "and it's got me thinking that life is short and chaotic and loud but mostly life is so damned short."
"It's true." Maggie reminds her hand lifting to toy with a few stray strains of Alex's hair. "When it comes down to it life is short, Danvers." Alex nods in agreement to this leaning into the palm resting against her cheek. "So, I'm going to make the most of it and I've decided the best way to do that would be to kiss the girls I…."
Alex held her breath only for Maggie to tap off her eyes widening in surprise before she was rocking away with a hand dropping to the pocket of her jeans. Alex finds herself giggling a little at the low curse Maggie gives as she fishes her phone out. Now she understood what the humming sound was. Maggie's phone must have been switched to vibrate.
"Hold it for me?" Maggie asks
Alex nodes hitting the accept call button and then turning the thing once the face time window opened.
"Hey, baby girl." Maggie starts in a signed greeting. Alex pouts a little at not being able to catch Cole's replies but going by the falling smile the cop was giving she could only guess Cole Sawyer wasn't at all pleased with her lack of 'goodnight' phone call before bedtime.
"Cole, Cole sweetie what are you talking about?" Maggie asks as well as signs in answer to whatever it is Cole is telling her.
At this Alex herself immediately stiffens when Maggie's eyes lift to find hers. The mistrust now swimming in them before Maggie was drawn back to the ongoing phone call.
"What do you mean Alex is hurt?" this was asked in complete sign.
It's then Alex risks a glance at the open phone line only to see a near copy of her own unconscious face taking up most of the phone screen.
"M'gann," Maggie called out after a hard scrutiny of both Alex herself and the one apparently just arrived at the Sawyer apartment.
The Alex lying half dead on the Sawyer's floor twitched at the name. Blurry eyes crake open with a scratchy "Maggie." In answer.
"I'll drive. You keep her conscious." Alex promises her hand already finding Maggie's and tugging in guide down the dark stairs.
