Jamie let out another cough as he tried to pull the covers higher over him. It was the second day of fighting the flu and he was miserable. It first started with Henry and made its way through the family. Unsurprisingly, the sickness had completely skipped over his wife, whose immune system was the envy of many. It had finally caught up to him and now he was out for the count. Even worse, it was Thanksgiving Day and he was going to miss out on dinner with the family.
Fortunately for him, his grandfather had sent some food over earlier in the day so he didn't miss out. He had tried to convince his wife to join the family for dinner but she refused, not wanting to leave him alone on the holiday. Currently, he was in isolation in their bedroom and was under strict orders from his wife to rest and instructed to call out for her in case he needed assistance.
"Eddie," he called out tiredly.
She quickly appeared in the doorway, "Yes?"
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Just cleaning up. Why? Do you need something?"
"You," he responded.
"Sick with the flu and still thinking about getting lucky," she said with a shake of her head. "If people only knew that you weren't as much of a boy scout as you claim."
Jamie let out a weak laugh, "Get your mind out of the gutter, Ed. I didn't mean it like that. I'm lonely over here. Can I go out to the living room?"
"Then you'll infect the common areas, Bub," she joked. Then, she walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. "How about I come in here and stay with you instead? I don't mind you going out into the living room but the couch is not very comfortable."
"I don't want to get you sick," he replied.
She smiled, "I've been dealing with all of you sick Reagans for the past few weeks. Plus, I've slept with you every night. I feel perfectly fine. You won't get me sick. And if you do, oh well. Now move over."
He moved over without hesitation and Eddie quickly settled in next to him. He offered her some of the comforter, to which she shook her head and covered him back up with it. She propped herself up on her elbow and used her other hand to run her fingers through his unruly hair. He instantly relaxed and she could tell that he was starting to fall asleep.
"Stay with me, Bub," she said gently. "If you fall asleep then I'll be lonely."
"Trying," he muttered with his eyes closed. "Talk to me and I'll stay awake."
"Are you still up for spending Christmas with my mom and dad in Montauk?" she asked.
"Yeah," he drawled out tiredly. "I thought you already told them we'd go." He opened his eyes and looked up toward her. "Do you not want to go anymore?"
"I don't know…" she trailed off. "I mean… will the family be okay with it? This will be the first time we won't be with them for Christmas. I know how important it is for Henry to have all of us together, especially now that he's getting older. He scared me a little bit the other day with what he was saying at dinner."
Henry had gone through a recent health scare, which landed him in the hospital for over a week. It was a scary time for the family but thankfully, he made it through just fine and managed to walk himself out of the hospital. But, it made him more aware that his days were numbered on this earth and made him want his family around him as often as possible.
"He'll be okay, Eddie. And I already told him about our plans. He's happy that we're going with your parents. They're my family as much as they are yours. Don't worry about it, hon. I was even planning to take Dad and Pop out to dinner the night before we leave to Montauk so we can spend some time with them."
Eddie let out a sigh of relief, "That makes me feel better. Good."
"I know the relationship with your parents is still iffy at times but I think it's better than it was. I think you and your mom talk way more now than you did before. I know your dad and I are still not in the greatest place but… he's going to be the grandfather of our future children. I don't want family get togethers to be awkward. That's why I think it's important that we make time to be with your parents too so we can continue to build up the relationship."
Eddie smiled. Jamie had always been the biggest advocate of her maintaining a relationship with her parents. He's never pushed her into it but has slowly nudged her into that direction over the years. He knows what it's like not to have a parent anymore and didn't want her to have any regrets if something happened to them.
"I love you. And thank you for accepting my crazy family. I definitely knew you were a keeper once I saw you deal with my mom."
"If I can deal with her daughter, then I can deal with her," he joked. "Your mom never scared me. We had to work through some things in the beginning but now I'm Lena's favorite son-in-law."
"You're Lena's only son-in-law," Eddie pointed out.
"Exactly," he replied. "Which is why she loves me."
She shook her head and laughed, "Well… talking about that, what about your family?"
"What about them?" he asked.
"What do they think about me? Thinking about it now, they must've been a little thrown with how quick we did things."
"They were…" he admitted. "It had been so long since I'd been a relationship that it was surprising that we jumped from zero to one hundred as quick as we did."
She chuckled, "Literally in three days."
Jamie nodded, "And that's not in my nature at all. But that's pretty much been my entire relationship with you… doing things that are out of my comfort zone."
"And that's a good thing, right?" she questioned cautiously.
He smiled, "It's a great thing. That's why my family loves you. You push me to do things that I don't typically do. I don't think I would've made it this far in my career or in life in general without you in my corner."
Eddie shook her head, "You would've."
"I really don't think so, Eddie. I don't want to sound corny or anything but with you next to me… I feel like I can do anything."
Eddie smiled gently and kissed the side of her husband's head, "You're sweet."
"I try when I can," he replied.
"I guess you might get lucky when you get better," she joked.
He winked at her, "That's what I was hoping for."
"I had a feeling," she laughed.
"Are you sure you don't want to go have dinner with the family?" he asked a little while later, closing his eyes again and adjusting the comforter over him. "I'll be fine here by myself for a few hours."
"I'm not leaving you here alone on Thanksgiving," she replied. "I love your family, but I love my husband a little bit more and would much rather be with him on the holiday."
He opened his eyes to look at her, "You love me just "a little bit" more than my family?"
"Just a little bit. You and Henry run really close."
He chuckled and closed his eyes again, "I'll take it." He pulled himself closer to her. "Can I go back to sleep now? I feel it hitting me."
She smiled and started running her fingers through his hair again, "Go for it."
There was a long moment of silence where Eddie thought that Jamie had fallen asleep but was surprised when he spoke up again.
"Eddie?" he mumbled.
"Yes?"
"I love you and I'm really thankful for you. I wouldn't want to spend my life with anyone else. Happy Thanksgiving, hon."
She laid her head against his affectionately, "I love you too. Happy Thanksgiving, Bub."
