-Rose can fix that for you when we get home, she's great at fixing just about anything.- Emmett said as he helped Jasper on the backseat, he was holding the broken chain, had been the first thing he snatched when they were leaving the hotel.
Rosalie might be an outstanding mechanic, she loved cars, loved fixing them even more, she even designed some cars whenever she was bored, and she had a huge collection of hot wheels in their mansion in Liverpool.
Point is, she also knew how to fix other things, from electrodomestics and any leak in the house to clothes and jewelry.
Emmett found it amazing, how she could fix just about anything.
But that was just Rosalie, she was amazing at everything.
Once Jasper was sitting Emmett handed him the mug, he had washed it once the hot chocolate was gone and had insisted on taking it back with him, Emmett guessed he had liked it more than he had anticipated.
Another proof that the guy had a great sense of humor, one Emmett certainly approved of.
-When we get to Texas I will get you some crutches.- Carlisle said as he got into the driver's seat, Emmett closing Jasper's door before circling the car and getting in the backseat with him.
-Thanks.- Jasper muttered, it would be nice to get some freedom to move around without someone helping him, I mean, he loved having Alice close, and while he still found it a bit uncomfortable, that of having others touching him it also felt nice…
To feel gentle touches, warm, actually safe and with no promise for pain. He wasn't sure how to describe it, he didn't like the touch, but he also craved it, it was… odd.
Point is, he felt like he was being a bother to everyone whenever he wanted to move around and needed someone to help him, he didn't want them to get mad, or for Alice to grow tired of him.
He knew she didn't mind, but he still felt bad.
-Where's Edward?- Carlisle questioned.
-He went out earlier, said he had something to do but that he would be back in time for our flight.- Emmett said, at that exact moment the copilot's door opened and Edward got in, shutting the door before turning on his seat, holding a bag out for Jasper to take.
-You don't have a phone yet, thought this would at least help you pass the time while you are in the airplane.
Jasper frowned, but he still took the bag, putting it on his lap and looking inside, there were several books inside, some in English and some others in Spanish.
-These are for me?- He questions, not sure what to make of this, didn't Edward dislike him? A short nod was his answer.
-You like to read, right?
He did, but that still didn't explain what had led Edward to give him books.
And still…
-I do… thank you.- He decided to accept the gift, sometimes, it was best to not make questions.
Edward shrugged before turning back on his seat, ignoring Carlisle's look.
"That was nice of you."
He also ignored those words, staring straight ahead, he had gotten them from several different stores, it had been a bit hard to find books that weren't in Italian while also not being too childish, he knew his reading skills had gotten a lot better.
Same as he also knew he wouldn't like being given childish books just because he had a hard time reading.
And the language…
Edward didn't think he would appreciate the language at the moment.
For all he knew Jasper might have grown to associate that language with the Volturi, and after last night… Edward still felt sick at the reminder.
Because he had seen it.
And God, Aro was much more twisted than Edward ever gave him credit for, to do such a thing, all the while he had a crowd acting as an audience, as if they were looking at a completely normal situation.
That was just sick and flat out messed up, no wonder he got so volatile when people stared for too long.
Yesterday had completely changed his view of him, not just because of the nightmare, but mainly because of how he had faced the Volturi, he had pushed back every single one of his fears in order to face them, all so as to protect Alice, and them all.
He had ignored his own safety and comfort, hell, Edward had seen it, he had accepted the possibility of getting killed or re-captured long before he stepped into Italy.
To think he was willing to go so far… it was outstanding, and a bit concerning, loyalty and courage were good, but he had the slight feeling that Jasper's thing went beyond the average loyalty and courage, and that there might be something else pushing him to do such reckless acts.
He just doesn't know what.
~
Texas -
-Why aren't they here? They should be here.
-Darling, the airplane just landed, people are just starting to come out.- Esme said, watching her daughter start passing again, she couldn't imagine how anxious she had to be.
She had been all over the place and in quite the volatile mood since Jasper's disappearance, even more so after Jacob came back alone.
Esme had never seen her like that, such anger… Bella and Rosalie had had told hold her back after she broke Jacob's jaw, Esme was quite sure she would have broken several other bones if she had had the chance.
Esme couldn't blame her, last time Jasper disappeared she thought him dead for decades, she just found him ago not even a few months ago, for him to disappear again, for Jacob to help him do such reckless thing…
It stood to reason she would be furious, she could lose her mate again, this time for real, and the same person who was meant to be part of their family had helped him put his safety at risk.
But all of it was done now, Jasper was safe, and coming back home.
Esme couldn't be more relieved, because her son hadn't died, she hadn't lost another son before she got to truly meet him.
He was alive.
Esme's words didn't soothe Alice at all though, she could tell.
Alice who was almost biting her fingernails as she watched the humans fill out of the airplane, with no Jasper in sight.
Edward had sent her a picture and assured her that Jasper was fine, and she herself had spent the whole day watching him, had seen him having a nightmare and Carlisle comforting him.
Something that had made her seethe, to hear him so afraid, to know what those words stood for, she wished she could wrangle Aro's neck for all the pain he had brought Jasper.
But she couldn't.
And it made her venom boil to know that the bastards who had hurt her mate were still out there, alive and acting like they did no wrong in the world.
But Jasper was alright.
He was no longer in their claws, would never be again for as long as she lived.
But she still couldn't be at ease, she needed him right in her arms to be sure he was safe.
She had made Esme drive her to the airport five hours earlier than their flight's estimated time of arrival, she was so anxious she hadn't trusted herself to not crash the car.
Which wouldn't be a problem, but she needed a car, Jasper couldn't walk and a car would be much more comfortable for him.
Her thoughts came to an abrupt halt when she caught sight of him.
Jasper.
Emmett was the one holding him, and while he looked a bit pale he didn't seem much hurt, though she knew he was hurt, she had demanded Edward to tell her everything that had happened and everything about how Jasper was.
She ran up to him as fast as humanly acceptable, barely holding herself back from hugging him, instead, she got Emmett to give him to her, his arms around her neck and his face much too close, he turned his face away from her, guilt in his eyes.
-Are you okay?- Is the first thing that comes out of her mouth, she had been mad over his escapade, even more mad when she learnt he had his memories back, all of them.
Because how could he be so damn reckless? What was he thinking about when he chose to go up to the Volturi and threaten them? It had made her seethe to even think about the apparent reasoning behind it.
She had heard him, had seen him, he had been terrified out of his mind, and he had still put up tough face to threaten the Volturi into leaving her alone, not him, her, he seriously went over and risked his life and safety.
For her.
And God, she had wanted to scream at him, because when would he learn that that was the complete opposite of what she wanted? She could care less about her own safety if it meant he wouldn't be hurt, why did he always have to play the hero? Why did he always felt the need to give everything up for her?
Why couldn't he understand that the most painful and terrible thing he could do to her was putting himself in danger for her?
But seeing him right now, having him in her arms… all her anger had disappeared, all she had wanted to say, all she had planned on telling him… it was all gone.
Because he was here, alive, safe, and she could do nothing but tighten her hug around him as she felt a most asphyxiating weight lift off of her chest, letting her breathe with ease once again, because he was here.
And God, finding out she couldn't see him, just to then see him in Volterra, she had never felt so impotent, even more so seeing Caius hurting him, for a most terrible moment she had thought she would lose him again, and this time, it would be for real.
She had truly thought she would never see him again.
She hadn't regretted one bit having broken Jacob's jaw the moment she had had him infront of her, for him to have had the audacity to come back after taking Jasper to his death… hadn't it been for Bella and Rosalie she would have done more than just break his jaw.
She had never felt the kind of heat and all consuming fury she had done at that moment.
But it was all gone now, because Jasper was safe, back with her, alive.
And she could do nothing but hug him, hug him and bury her nose into the crook of his neck, taking in a deep breath, just to cement the fact of how real he was, needing to cement the fact that she wasn't hallucinating.
Meanwhile, Jasper felt a knot stuck at the back of his throat as he felt the overwhelming wave of Alice's emotions, love, joy, pain, frustration, calm, fear, relief.
It was like a sea of a bittersweet warmth, it made his guilt grow, almost suffocating, he had known his actions would bring her a lot of pain, but feeling it was a thousand times much worse than knowing.
Because he was the one who put that pain there.
She had been afraid, for him, and it killed him to know he had hurt her such, he had expected her to shout at him, to glare at him at least, but she didn't, all she was doing was crushing him into a desperated hug, as if she were expecting someone to snatch him or for him to disappear.
Such a warm hug… he buried his nose into the crook of her neck, taking in a deep breath and feeling some of the tension in his muscles leave, she smelt nice…
He nuzzled her neck, enveloping her in his love and comfort, he didn't want her to be sad, much less because of him.
-'m sorry.- He finds himself whispering against her neck.
She doesn't answer, she just hugs him tighter.
And he can't help but relax completely, finally, he was home.
~
-Uncle Jasper!- Hearing that title the moment Jasper set foot out of the car was unexpected, same as he was quite caught off guard at the short arms locking around his waist.
And still, he managed to keep his balance, Carlisle, true to his word, had gotten him crutches, had gotten them for him on their way home.
The man did ask him over a dozen times if his shoulders didn't feel sore, or if it hurt his arms to use the crutches.
Jasper had managed to convince him that he was alright, it did hurt a bit to put pressure on his shoulders when moving around, but he could bear a bit of pain.
Still, back to the point at hand, the short arms, he looked down in order to be met with soft brown, a bright gaze staring back at him in absolute delight, her happiness was deafening.
He knew she liked him, she did spend an awful lot of time around him, she would even sneak around to spend time with him when he first arrived and no one dared to come close to him, she was never afraid of him, never disgusted, she even shared her snacks with him.
But he never expected her to call him "uncle", it was… nice, as a human, he had had a baby niece, much too young for him to ever hear her speak let alone call him uncle.
So having Renesmee doing so… it's nice, makes him feel warm, like he might actually be able to have a family in them.
-Hi.- He greets her, not sure how is he even suppose to react to this, he never had anyone but Alice get so excited over seeing him, Esme had been tremendously relieved at the airport, and while she had looked like she had wanted to hug him.
She hadn't.
She had touched his arm and told him how glad she was that he was back, her relief had been deafening.
-Please, don't leave like that again.- Renesmee requested, her voice was childish, but the look she gave him made him feel as if she knew exactly where he had gone.
She was smarter than he gave her credit for.
-I won't.- He ended up conceding, she narrowed her eyes at him before releasing him and stepping back, holding her pinkie up infront of him.
-Promise?
He bit back a smile, feeling a pang of melancholy, his younger siblings had loved exploiting that pinkie promise gesture with him, mainly because they just knew he could never bring himself to break a pinkie promise.
Not that he was ever one to break promises, but something about being confronted by such childish gesture while being given such a serious look always made it feel like a particularly important promise.
Still.
He reached out for her hand, hooking their pinkies together.
-I promise.- He conceded, feeling the amusement wash around him.
Renesmee's face lit up, a smile breaking out, and for the first time in a long time.
He found himself smiling back.
Unbeknownst to Jasper and the general audience, a certain blonde gave the ghost of a smile as she watched the whole ordeal.
Feeling her shoulders relax, he was back at home at last.
~
*Several months later*
Alice smiled as she stepped out of the bathroom, Jasper was still sleeping, a peaceful look on his face, it was a nice sight, ever since his escapade to Volterra his nightmares had increased.
At times, he would wake up screaming, more than once on the same night, but their numbers had been decreasing a lot, even more so after Edward adopted the habit to play the piano at night.
Or whenever she sang to him, it seemed to do the trick enough to give him a night free of nightmares.
It was nice to see him so peaceful, she came up to him, sitting at the edge of the bed by his side, all of his wounds had healed, and while he could now stand on his own, he still had a lot of troubles walking.
Carlisle massaged the muscles on his legs sometimes, something about checking the strength of the muscles and also to relax the muscles.
Alice hated those days, because feeling Jasper's hands crushing her own, hearing the occasional whimper or sob, seeing the silent tears… it broke her heart, even more so because at times, he would struggle against her hold, he never spoke, but he didn't need to to let her know he wanted to escape the pain.
And it killed her, because she hated being the one holding him, but he had to be held so he wouldn't accidentally bite, punch or scratch Carlisle, plus, she couldn't bear to leave him alone, she wanted to be there to comfort him and make sure he knew he was safe, she would never let him be hurt.
Alice was aiming to learn how to do those massages, if she did it she knew Jasper would be a whole lot relaxed.
She traced his features, brushing away a few stray locks from his face, his hair was now well past his shoulders, and seeing that he didn't seem particularly bothered by the length of it she didn't mind, plus, she got to braid it.
Her smile turned into a grin as he mumbled some nonsense in his sleep, she leaned down, pressing a soft kiss on his cheek.
He shifted on the bed, eyes fluttering open for the littlest of moments before he was reaching out for her, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her down, prompting her to topple over him, she chuckled at it, even more so as she felt him nuzzle her throat, the ticklish feeling filling her with butterflies.
He had gotten much more playful and affectionated, and she loved every moment of it, it almost felt as if he were getting some light back into him.
As if that cloudy storm over his head was finally starting to clear.
It seemed like his talks with Rosalie were helping, she didn't knew what did he speak with her about, all Alice knew is that Rosalie had taken it to take him for drives sometimes, and they spoke.
A lot.
She didn't eavesdrop so she didn't knew what did their talks were about, but she could get an idea of it, point was, Jasper had gotten a lot better, so, whatever Rosalie was doing, Alice was tremendously grateful with her.
And glad that Jasper had managed to find someone to speak with, she didn't took it personally, she knew he trusted her, but sometimes it was easier to speak with someone you were less close with, or at that's what Carlisle had said once.
As long as he was comfortable Alice didn't mind, what mattered was that he wasn't bottling all that up and that he was getting some help.
She sighed contently, pulling back just enough to meet his sleepy eyes, grinning at his cute frown, she gave him an Eskimo kiss.
To think she would find him again… that he would be alive.
She would never get tired of this, of being able to hug him, kiss him, touch him, smell him, of him being alive .
She felt his hands rest on her waist at the exact same time he broke the Eskimo kiss, ending the distance between them to instead press their lips together, a kiss so filled with emotions she could do nothing but melt into it.
The warmth draping over her was familiar, like the coziest blanket in the world, it made her chest feel warm and butterflies dance across her skin, his love.
It was as intense and overwhelming as ever, making her glad she wasn't standing for her legs would have given in.
As the kiss broke she peppered his cheek with fluttering kisses, up until she reached his neck where she placed one last kiss before nuzzling him affectionately, resting her head on his shoulder.
They laid there, just in comfortable silence, the sound of his heartbeat like a soft lullaby to her ears, his fingers carding through her hair, she was in the fifth heaven.
And for the first time in a long time she allowed herself to fully relax, because for the first time in a long time.
It felt like they would truly be alright.
~
Esme smiled as she felt the warm curtain surrounding her, it had taken her quite a while to figure out where was it coming from.
Until it hit her.
Jasper.
It was such an intense warmth, it seeped into her skin and left her feeling weightless and so relaxed she could do nothing but smile.
Love.
Happiness.
That's what the warmth was.
His gift was such a fascinating thing, for him to be capable of broadcasting his own emotions like that… it hadn't occurred to her that he might be able to broadcast positive emotions same as he could broadcast the negative ones.
It was heartwarming to feel his happiness, the bond between him and Alice was quite the beautiful thing to see, she hasn't seen them kiss so far, but the way they looked at each other alone was otherworldly.
Esme wasn't sure how to describe it, but sometimes it felt as if they could speak with each other through nothing but looks, the way they sometimes moved in such perfect sync, as if they were connected in ways no one might ever be able to decipher fully.
Something about their bond ran deeper than anything Esme had ever seen.
And she wondered if it was because of him being an empath, the separation they were subjected to for decades, or if they were just naturally that attuned to each other.
She smiled as she heard Alice's giggle, ever since Jasper turned up Alice had been much more happier, and she didn't go on shopping marathons, in fact, she isn't gone in one of those since Jasper appeared over 11 months ago.
That was a record, and proof that Esme and Carlisle had been right on her using shopping as a coping mechanism for the loss of her mate, not destructive, but still concerning.
Jasper was now here, and Alice's never been happier, she was much more relaxed and less prompt to cling to people 24/7, now Esme wondered if her clinginess had been related to her need to not be alone, Esme couldn't imagine how terrible it must have been for her when Bella came around.
The loneliness.
And she wasn't sure if to be amazed or concerned over her daughter's outstanding ability to always smile.
She never realized half of those smiles were fake until Jasper came around and Alice began smiling more, this time genuinely.
Jasper… Esme was delighted with him, he was such an endearing gentleman, such a sweetheart, he seemed quite interested in cooking, though he seemed to favor baking more.
She loved those times she got with him, he would sit at the countertop and help her, sometimes mixing ingredients, other times preparing stuff, and seeing that he could ingest human food…
It was nice to get to bake or cook for him, because as stated before, she never got to feed her children, vampires couldn't stand human food, but black bloods could, even if not everyday seeing that it could harm him.
He still ate human food twice a week, and a lot of junk food he thought no one noticed.
So far, she's managed to learn what he likes and what he hates, he loved apple pie, peach cobbler and banana bread, same as he seemed particularly fond of cinnamon ice cream, especially the one Alice made.
He also liked jam, and just about anything berry related or any fruit in general for that matter.
He hated coffee, she knew that much, she could still remember the face he made over it after he mixed up the coffee with the hot chocolate.
He also hated sodas, Renesmee had given him a Coke once and he had flinched as if struck at the first sip, had looked like he had wanted to spit it, and he still had swallowed it despite Esme telling him he didn't have to if he didn't like it, he had looked close to tears.
There were also any potato chips with salt as the main flavor, spicy foods and sour foods.
In fact, he seemed to favor sweet things a lot, which Esme guessed made sense considering his sense of taste might be heightened as a vampire.
Still.
He was incredibly smart too, a quick learner, Carlisle and her had bought him new educative books last month, much more difficult than the previous ones, he seemed to enjoy the work.
For what Carlisle had told her Jasper's progress was outstanding, he still had trouble with the order of letters, but his comprehension and reading skills had improved a lot, and his understanding of the modern world seemed to have improved a lot too.
It amazed her how far he had come in just 11 months, she could still remember when she first saw him all chained and muzzled in that dark room, such horrifying view…
And now he was here, free, healing, safe.
Now their family was complete.
~
Epilogue
It's been 20 years since Jasper was found at the church in Texas, they had moved several times, and now they were at Iceland.
Rosalie had taught Jasper how to drive, him and Alice had gotten married, and he had graduated for the first time.
He was completely healed at this point, and much happier. He didn't flinch anymore whenever someone touched him, he had less nightmares, his speech had improved incredibly and so had his ability to read and write.
And still.
Against Carlisle's hopes and prayers, Jasper's legs hadn't healed as well as he had hoped, he could walk perfectly well on his own without any kind of support, same as he could also get up and play around, but he couldn't jump from high heights without experiencing pain nor could he shapeshift without breaking his legs.
He couldn't run fast enough to hunt on his own either, but everyone always made a point at scaring animals on his direction so he could take them down without having to run much, or he just sometimes took a hunting rifle with him.
Point was, he had become quite independent when it came to blood, he wouldn't let others hunt for him nor would he feed off of blood bags.
Which Carlisle guessed was a good thing, for him to be able to feed on his own.
His need for venom had fallen back into a much more normal state, he drank venom twice a week, there were seven of them so venom was never scarce, Renesmee didn't count seeing that she had blood in her veins.
And even so, Jasper had left more than clear than he would never accept such a thing from her.
It did pain Carlisle sometimes though, that he lost something so necessary for survival in a vampire, his ability to run and jump, but he would be alright, Jasper was one of the strongest and most resilient people he's ever met.
He never sat for long whenever an obstacle came up, somehow, he always managed to find a solution.
And even if there were to come obstacles he couldn't surpass, he had a family to care for him, one who would always look after him.
Suddenly, Carlisle's thoughts came to an abrupt halt as he heard the burst of laughter, and he couldn't help but smile, glancing out of the window of his studio in time to see Rosalie shoving Edward into the pool.
This time around their house had come with a pool, or well, it didn't come with a pool, Alice had begged him for a house with a pool, and then she had gotten Emmett, Rosalie and Renesmee into it.
So, a house with a pool.
They were seemingly playing volleyball, seeing Jasper in the water was enough to make his smile grow, he was usually very anxious around bodies of water, but he had loosened a lot around the pool.
Which Carlisle guessed was a huge improvement, at times, he couldn't help but marvel at how far Jasper had come from that skittish young man from 20 years ago, he could still remember when he first saw him, chained and muzzled, starving, terrified.
He remembered how hesitant he had been about feeding, his reticence to showering and the flinching whenever he was touched. And now…
He wrestled with Emmett and Bella sometimes, had loosened a lot these past years, he acted less skittish and anxious and more like an actual teenager.
He had also grown to smile quite a bit, I mean, he didn't smile much, but he still smiled, because he was happy, and it never failed to make Carlisle smile.
At times he found himself feeling glad he had given him a chance, because at the end, it had been worth it.
Jasper had become another son for him, one he loved and cared for as if he were his own, he got along quite well with the others, and Alice was happy.
He had been a missing piece none of them had even known was missing until he turned up.
And Carlisle would always be glad he chose to take the risk with him.
Because their family was finally complete.
A/N: The epilogue was supposed to be the last and a separated chapter, but it came out so short I just shoved it here
Anyways, thanks a lot for reading and for all of you who left positive feedback or your view on the chapters! Also sorry for the terrible schedule with the updates, I work on a lot of fics at the same time, some of which aren't even posted yet, so, I'm amazed I managed to finish this fic •π•*
