Chapter 1: The beginning Shots

March 15, 1935

The air on this day is tense as crews on the airfield were getting planes ready to launch. This airbase is one of many in Imperial Germany that was about to make history. On the airfield, about twenty Heinkel HE-111s medium bombers are being fueled and loaded with high-explosive bombs. Near the hangars, about fifteen Me-109s are lined up and ready to launch. In one of the hangars, sat all the aircrews that would take part in this mission. One of these pilots is a young man in his early twenties. He has red hair and green eyes and like the rest of the pilots gathered in the hangar, dressed in his flight suit. His name is Theodor Eberbach and currently he was listening in on the briefing that was being conducted by the squadron's intel officer, Oberleutant (1st LT) Gretal Jeckeln.

"We will be making our approach from the south, avoiding Randgriz International Airport. Jagdgeschwader 181 will be attacking the airfield, allowing us to focus on escorting the bombers to Randgriz," Gretel stated as she pointed at the map of Randgriz.

"We will be going in with the rest of the bomber force as they strike key positions all over Randgriz. While the Gallians are recovering from these strikes, the Wehrmacht will begin the invasion. We believe it will take the Gallians some time before they can fully mobilize." A hand shot up, the hand belonging to Leutnant Anett Hosenfeld.

"Will there be any Gallian fighters rising up to tangle with us?" Anett asked.

"We expected a few but with the attack on the airport, there should not be many. The other attacks on the other airfields will also prevent fighters from challenging us," Gretel stated. After seeing no more questions, she stepped to the side. A woman with long blonde hair took the stage, her blue eyes looking over the gathered pilots. The woman is Irisdina Bernhard, the young commander of the fighter squadron.

'Everyone, today is an important day for the Fatherland. Today will begin the day where we will liberate Gallia and bring her back under Imperial Germany. Remember your training and most of all, do not underestimate your opponent. The moment you do, it will be your last, understood?"

"Jawohl!" Theodor and the rest of the pilots replied. Irisdina smiled at this. Everyone was excited for this and they have a good reason to be. This will be the first time that the Luftwaffe will be entering combat since the end of the Great War and thanks to their rigorous training, they are more than ready to take on this momentous task.

"Alright then, head to your planes and get ready to launch," Irisdina ordered. Theodor and the rest of the pilots all stood up as one and then turned and headed to their fighters. Theodor went to the fighter that was closer to the runway. He saw that the maintenance crew were doing the finishing touches on his plane as one of them noticed him coming up to them.

"Leutnant Eberbach!" The enlisted soldier barked. The rest of the ground crew stopped what they were doing and saluted him as well.

"Is the plane alright Chief?" Theodor asked. The crew chief nodded.

"She's all good to go. We were able to fix the engine problem and the fuel line has been patched up," Theodor nodded and then climbed into the cockpit. He turned on the engine and soon, the engine began to turn the props and outside, two crew members pulled the blocks blocking the landing gear of the fighter. Theodor put on his helmet, strapped himself in and looked forward. He saw one of the soldiers and they directed him forward. He accelerated and the soldier went to the side to let Theodor pass and saluted him. As Theodor made his way to the runway, he felt a strong sense of pride being built up in him. He was going to be a part of something great and he wondered if this was what his father felt when….

Theodor shook his head. Now was not the time to get too sentimental. As he approached the runway and was waiting his turn to take off, a part of him also felt dread at the thought of possibly dying in the opening stages of this next war.

A few Hours Later

United States Embassy

Randgriz, Principality of Gallia

Andrew yawned and then took a sip from his cup coffee. He has been awake since 4 in the morning and now his shift was about to end and he was counting the minutes. Ever since coming to Randgriz 2 years ago, it has been nothing but patrols, helping people into the embassy, the dinners and parties, and of course the usual nut jobs that protest in front of the embassy against "American Imperialism".

"You would think they would have more productive things to do," Andrew muttered as he rubbed his eyes, trying to stay awake.

"Who does sir?" A voice behind him asked. He turned and saw that it was his relief, a corporal by the name of Evans.

"Evans, thank god you are here. I think I was about to drop dead," Andrew stated as he got up from his seat.

"Well, you have been on duty for 6 hours so it makes sense. Heard you got some leave," Evans replied as Andrew gave the seat to Evans and Andrew picked up his mug.

"Yeah, my wife's squadron is going to be docked in Southampton with that new carrier so I took some time to go see her," Andrew replied.

"Lucky you boss, having a wife and all visiting. Wait, new carrier? Oh, you mean the Essex," Evans stated, Andrew nodded.

"Yeah, heard the Navy is starting to get those things out though we only have like 2 from what I heard. But more should be on the way. Anway, nothing to report other than the boredom of looking at nothing. Also, at this hour, we shouldn't expect much people coming in so just look busy in case the Lt comes around," Andrew said.

"Got it Gunny. Now go get some shut eye. You look like hell," Evans replied.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll get some sunshine first. Being stuck in this building, drives me crazy," Andrew said as he made his way to the door.

"You can never get that infantry mindset out of you huh," Evans called out as Andrew closed the door. He sighed as he walked out into the courtyard and took a sip of his coffee.

Even after 2 years after being transferred to Randgriz to be a member of the embassy security detail, Andrew still can't help but remember that day. He still remembers the anger he felt towards his CO, Fang's broken face when she was kicked out, and his helplessness of not being able to do anything to stop it.

"Some Lt I was. Couldn't even control my emotions to make a sound call. Well, at least I was able to get promoted to gunny," Andrew mused. Ever since his demotion, apparently he was barred from being an officer again as his appeals to get his rank back have ended in failure. I was only recently with only 3 more months of his enlistment that they promoted him one rank to Gunnery Sergeant. Well, it wasn't all bad. In the years he has been stationed in Randgriz, he was able to get married to his sweetheart, and he even was able visit some family in Germany, though that trip was probably one of the most awkward trips he had to do by himself.

"Well, at least I am not hated by EVERYONE," Andrew told himself as he made his way to the front gate. There, two other marines were on guard duty. One of them noticed Andrew approaching and stood at attention but Andrew waved him off.

"Thought you were already off sir?" The marine asked.

"I just wanted to get some fresh air first,"Andrew replied, taking a sip from his coffee. Andrew looked around and saw that it was surprisingly peaceful and not many people out today.

"Well, the locals are pretty quiet today," Andrew commented.

"Yeah, normally they would already be here but I guess they are taking the day off today," the marine stated. Andrew just shrugged and enjoyed his coffee. He will take these quiet times when they come.

"Well, at least that I will be leaving in 3 months and then I can focus on building my wife," Andrew commented to himself.

Suddenly an alarm went off throughout the city. This woke Andrew right up, along with the marine sentry and some civilians that were walking by the embassy.

"Randgriz having another drill now?" The sentry commented. Recently, the city has been going through air raid drills, thanks to their neighbor Imperial Germany rattling near the border. Even though the embassy was notified of these drills, there wasn't supposed to be one scheduled for today.

"It's probably a surprise Gallians have been paranoid as of late and no shock there. We just have to wait and see. Give it another few minutes and they will shut it off," Andrew commented. However, a few seconds after he said that, he heard something in the distance. A sound he was all too familiar with.

"Those sound like explosions," Andrew commented. The explosions began to get louder and another sound made its presence known. Andrew and the marine looked up to see that there was a formation of two engine bombers, Andrew counted about 5 of them. Also, Andrew noticed smaller specs near the bombers.

"And they have fighter escorts too," Andre mused. Soon, he saw something begin to drop from underneath the bombers and he knew all too well what those were.

'Incoming!" Andrew yelled, dropping his mug and grabbing the other marine to hit the ground. Soon, bombs were drop[ping near them as the explosions were faint at first but then got louder and louder. Andrew could hear the civilians screaming and panicking behind him as the explosions got closer. Just then, he heard a loud bomb near him and the ground shook. He then heard things falling behind him, a bomb had hit one of the nearby buildings. Soon, the explosions seemed to have stopped and Andrew looked up from his spot. There was debris everywhere with the nearby building burning from the bomb hit. Andrew also noticed bodies on the street, some not moving while others were in pain.

"Hey! Hey, we got to help these people,``Andrew said, getting the other marine up. Once both marines were up, they began to go help those who were injured. Andrew approached the nearest wounded civilian, a man who by his attire works at the nearby factory that makes shoes.

"Please….. Help…." The man groaned. Andrew took a look at the wounds and it looks like the man had gotten hit by some debris from the building as Andrew can see pieces of wood stuck into the man's side.

"Don't worry. You are going to be just fine," Andrew said as he helped the man up and then brought him to the embassy. By now, many of the marines on duty were also helping civilians. Andrew saw that the lieutenant was also there and he looked at Andrew and the wounded man.

"Gunny, get the wound inside. We will treat them here for now until we can find a way to transfer them to the nearest hospital," the lieutenant ordered. Andrew nodded at the order and then began to help the wounded man towards the embassy as other marines from the security detail begin to help as well.

As Andrew helps the wounded, a thought played in Andrew's head, 'Well there goes my plans for the foreseeable future. Or… anyone's plans for that matter.'

Theodar braced a bit as his fighter bumped down on the landing. He then taxied his fighter to a nearby hangar but there was also something there. It was the scorched remains of a Gallian Royal Air Force P-40 fighter.

"Well, that is one less to worry about," Theodar said to himself. Currently, his squadron had a new home. Thanks to the speed of the invasion on the first day, the Wehrmacht were able to capture some airfields near the border in good condition. As a result, the squadron was moved to this new airfield so that it would be easier for them to launch more attacks.

Theodar piloted his plane to a nearby 109 and shut off the engine. He opened the canopy and took off his flight cap. He heard the latter come to his fighter and he turned his head to see the chief mechanic climb up.

"So, how did she run?" he asked Theodar.

"She ran well. There was a slight vibration on the way back but nothing too serious," Theodar reported. The chief nodded and handed Theodar a water canteen. Theodar took the canteen and took a drink before handing it back to the crew chief. He then got out of the plane and then let the technicians handle it. He took a deep breath and was about to when he noticed the squadron XO, Oberleutnant Walter Kruger.

"Sir,"Theodar greeted the man with a salute. Walter returned the salute.

"At ease Leutnant," Walter replied before continuing, "Good job out there today. Outside of some damage from flak, all the bombers made it back safely."

"Well, while it is true that we met our objectives. I can't help but feel like we did nothing," Theodar commented then remembering he was talking to a superior officer, straightened up. However, he was surprised to see that Walter was nodding at his words.

"I can understand what you mean. It looks like the other squadrons were too good in suppressing the airport. We pretty much just had a sightseeing flight as there were no fighters to meet us but take my advice: enjoy the relative quiet now. The Gallians are not stupid, they won't leave the skies open for us for long."

Theodar nodded at his advice and Walter gave a small smile, "Now, let's head to the briefing room for a debrief. Then afterwards, I heard that the mess crew is preparing a big feast for us as a way to celebrate our victory."

Theodar smiled as he followed Walter towards the briefing room. He is filled with pride, knowing that this war will probably end soon and that they will be basking in the glory soon enough.

1500 Hours

U.S Embassy, Principality of Gallia

"Alright, so pretty much, the Krauts declared war on Gallia and are currently steam rolling through them as we speak," Andrew could only close his eyes and rub his forehead as the lieutenant is giving them the update on the situation. After gathering the civilians up and treating them, they were then transferred to the local hospital, the embassy closed and runners were sent out to the addresses of Americans in the city to let them know what is happening and to leave if they can.

"What is the enemy strength?" A marine asked.

"As of now, there are three groups pushing into Gallia. One from the North, one through the center, and one from the south. This info was given to us by Gallian High Command so this situation will update as soon as they get it"

Andrew raised his hand and asked, "Are we staying or are we going to evacuate?"

"As of now, we are staying until all tyeh civis are out. We are also waiting on the Secretary of State's son to return so that he can leave too," The lieutenant replied. Now that caught Andrew's attention, he knew that the kid, who's name is Jack Lawrence, was in teh country but thought he was already in the capital.

"From what I know, he was heading to the border town of Bruhl with a friend and they got caught up in the invasion. Last reports say they are on their way back but until then we are staying put." The lieutenant answered. Andrew nodded and leaned back into his seat. The rest of the meeting would be about continuing standard procedure and that the embassy will be temporary closed with only American citizens allowed in.

After the briefing, Andrew met with his lieutenant and before he could say anything the lieutenant replied, "I know what you are going to ask Vandegrfit and the answer is no."

"C'mon Lt, I didn't say anything yet," Andrew replied.

"I know what you want to ask and the answer is no. Your father already made it clear to me that you are to return to the U.S once your time is up," The lieutenant replied as the two men walked through the embassy.

"And you expect me to believe that the Gallians can hold against the krauts. From what you told us, they are losing ground and it would take a miracle for them to push them back," Andrew countered.

"Look, I am with you on that. But the State Department said that we are to not get involved as that will cause an international incident."

"Bah, it's those damn isolationists. They always love to say how we should focus on our country and when we actually do something for our country, they start to attack foreigners or Darcsens," Andrew complained as the two men entered the Lieutenant's office.

"Look, i don;t like it anymore than you do but those are our orders. And if you want it, I don't agree with the isolationists myself but since America doesn't want to get involved in another "European War" like during the Great War, most politicians are siding with them."

Andrew grumbled at this. He wasn't the only one in the military that hated the situation but ever since the recent cut in funding, the military had to justify nearly everything. It was a blessing that the president was able to convince many that an increase in military production would help with jobs, thus giving the U.S some advanced equipment when compared to before.

"Look, for now, just take it easy. I doubt we are getting involved and don't you have a wife to think about. For now, we need to just focus on getting our people out of harm's way and making sure the Secretary of State's son is on a plane out of here by week's end." The lieutenant stated. Andrew sighed and nodded. He saluted his CO and left the office and made his way to his room. Once inside, he closed the door and crashed on his bed and began to think.

True, he didn't have himself to think about but now he had a wife. And if Charlotte found out that he went to war without telling her….. Well, that would end bad for him. There were also his other siblings too. Would they be involved? He knew his brother Jacob and sister Qun'mi will for sure be involved, seeing as one is a captain of a carrier while the other…

"Well, Qun'mi may have to hold back if she ever gets involved," Andrew said to himself. He then heard a knock on his door. He got up and opened the door and a marine was in front of him.

"Hey Gunny, sorry to disturb you but the lieutenant wanted me to relay to you that all leave is currently canceled," The marine reported.

Andrew sighed and rubbed his forehead as the headache formed, "Got it." The marine nodded and left. Andrew closed the door and then went to his bed, falling flat on his bed. He then took a breath and yelled.

"GODDAMN YOU KRAUTS!"
