Chapter Two – A Father Daughter Bond
"Life is like riding a bicycle to keep your balance, you must keep moving" -Albert Einstein.
She was sitting at the table in the cafeteria absently eating fries. They were sitting a few tables away giggling and smiling at each other, and not noticing that this was a public space.
She inhaled.
"Earth to Veronica."
She blinked seeing Wallace, Piz, and Mac staring at her.
"Huh?" she asked looking at her fry in her hand as if it was the most interesting thing now.
"I was saying that I'm going to run naked around the whole cafeteria," Wallace said.
"And I was going to flash the whole student body," Mac said.
"And I was going to serenade the whole school in my boxers," Piz said.
"Oh that's nice," Veronica responded.
"Veronica, are you okay?" Mac asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Veronica said looking at her friends. "I-I gotta go to work," she said getting up, and grabbing her food. "I'll talk to you guys later," she said, and grabbed her bag and left.
Wallace watched Veronica leave and looked at Logan and Parker. "Do you think she'll be okay?" he asked looking at his friends.
"She'll be okay," Mac said. "Logan and Veronica have been on and off for years, they'll work it out."
"But what if they don't?" Piz asked raising an eyebrow.
"They're adults. They'll figure it out."
"But you know how stubborn they are," Wallace pointed out.
"What should we do? Knock their heads together?" Piz asked.
"Wouldn't that be fun?" Mac asked.
"I hope V is okay though," Wallace said. "Parker and Logan are really at it huh?" he asked as they kissed.
"Veronica will be okay," Piz said.
…
Veronica was going through the list of books on the computer. She stretched and yawned.
"Hi," someone said.
She looked up seeing Parker. "Hi," she responded, and went back to typing on the computer.
"Can we talk?" Parker asked.
"About a book we can," Veronica said. "Did you need something?"
"Veronica-"
"Parker, this is a library," she said not taking her eyes off the computer.
"Veronica, listen-"
She sighed and looked at the blonde. "Is there a book that you need Parker? Otherwise, I really need to get back to work."
Parker nodded, "Right," she said. "Because you are SO busy."
"Right," Veronica said, and grabbed a stack of books that was on the cart and walked away.
Parker sighed and followed her. "Veronica, I really do like Logan, but if you don't want me to date him-"
"You can date whoever you want too Parker."
"I just know you and Logan-"
"Logan and I are done," Veronica said putting books away.
"Are you sure?" she asked.
She turned to face the blonde. "Parker, it's fine. You can date Logan. I for one am happy it's you. Okay," she said and walked away.
Parker sighed, "Why does it feel fake?" she asked no one in particular.
…..
She was sitting at the counter with her laptop typing her paper. Her dad was cooking beef stew.
She felt nauseated, and tried to swallow it down when her dad brought a spoon to her.
"Can you taste this?" he asked.
Veronica gagged, "Sorry dad," she said trying to hold it in. The smell was getting to her. She got up and headed to the bathroom. She released the contents, and breathed in. She was nearing 2 months. She wasn't showing but she was not feeling well. She came out of the bathroom and rejoined her dad. He was looking at her concerned and confused.
"Are you okay? You love my beef stew," Keith said.
Veronica sniffed, "Uh, yeah dad. I'm fine. I-I don't know. Meat smell is," she said gagging. "It's getting to me."
Keith nodded and went back to his pot adding the vegetables. "Okay. Your mom had that reaction when she-" he paused suddenly realization hitting him. "Veronica, are you-"
"Dad," Veronica said pausing.
He felt anger building up in him, "Are you pregnant?"
Veronica sighed, "I-"
"Don't you lie to me Veronica," he said looking at her. "Don't you DARE lie to me!"
She looked away nodding.
"Say it. I want you to say it."
She looked at him swallowing. "I'm pregnant dad."
He slammed the sauce spoon on the counter and looked down. "What are you doing Veronica," he said.
"Dad, I-I'm not doing anything!"
"What about Logan? What is he doing?"
"H-He doesn't know."
"He doesn't know?" her dad repeated with disbelief. "Veronica this is the most naïve thing you ever did."
"I didn't do it on purpose dad!"
"You're only 19 Veronica. You have a whole life in front of you, not to be a teenage mom!"
"I-I know that dad."
Keith looked away from his daughter. "Can you just leave?"
"Leave?"
"Go to your room. I don't know. Leave."
Veronica sighed and grabbed her laptop and headed to her room. She closed the door and slid down letting the tears fall from her eyes.
…
Logan walked into his room seeing his girlfriend sitting on the bed looking bum.
"What's wrong?" he asked sitting next to her.
"I spoke to Veronica," Parker said.
"Oh? About?"
"About us Logan. I wanted to see if she and I are okay."
"And?"
"She seemed upset."
He leaned in kissing her neck, "She'll be okay," he said leaning his chin on her shoulder.
"Yeah I guess."
Just then loud music and talking and laughing came from the living room.
"Does Dick need to be loud with his groupies?" she asked.
He shrugged, "I learned to deal with it."
She looked at him, "Does he do this every night?" she asked.
"Not every night. But what do you say we have a party of our own," he said smiling devishly.
"Yeah?" she asked smiling.
He chuckled kissing her, "Yeah," he said as they fell on the bed.
…
(The Next Day)
Veronica walked into the kitchen seeing her dad. "Good morning dad," she said.
Keith looked up at her, and gave her a tight smile, then he grabbed his thermos with coffee and left. Veronica sighed and looked at Backup who was sitting on the couch.
"He'll forgive me eventually, right?" she asked him.
He barked. "Yeah I thought so," she said walked up to him and petting him.
"I gotta get going boy," Veronica said, and headed out the door.
She got to Hearst College. She parked her car, and her phone rang.
"Hello?" she answered.
"Hi may I please speck to Veronica Mars?" he asked.
"This is she."
"This is Dr. Macabe. I was calling to check up on you. I noticed that the last time we talked was two weeks ago. Have you decided on which way you want to proceed."
"Um, yeah. Can I make an appointment?"
"I can forward you to the front office. Are you sure about this Ms. Mars?" he asked.
"Yes Doctor. More than ever," she said getting out of her car, and closing the door.
"Okay, please hold and I'll forward you to the front to make the appointment."
"Thank you Doc."
…..
Logan was walking in the courtyard when he saw her in the corner of his eye. He half walked half ran to catch up with her.
"Hey Veronica," he called out.
She looked up and stopped. She faked a smile, "Logan," she said.
"Hey you okay?" he asked.
"Yeah, why?" she asked.
He ran his hand threw his hair, "Parker told me that she talked to you."
"Yep," she said and began walking.
He walked beside her, "Everything's okay right?" he asked.
"Yeah, why wouldn't it be?"
"I'm just checking. Because I still care about you."
She scoffed, "That's a low blow Logan," she said.
"What?" he asked.
She stopped, "We break up and you run to MY friend to fill that void. Stab me in the heart why don't you?" she asked.
"Veronica-"
"You know what Logan. It's your life. You can date who you want. Frankly, I don't give a shit," she said and turned and walked away.
He sighed and turned and walked towards his class.
…..
Veronica flushed the toilet and wiped her mouth with the tissue paper. This was the third time today. She literally had to run out of her classroom two hours ago. She walked out of the stall seeing Mac.
"Hey," Mac said concerned. "Are you okay?" she asked.
Veronica nodded and walked to the sink. She washed her mouth. "Yeah," she said washing her hands.
"Veronica, I've known you since high school. You can't lie to me."
"It's nothing I can't handle, okay?" she asked.
"You been throwing up almost everyday, smells get you funky and – " she paused. "Wait, are you-"
Veronica looked up meeting her eyes.
"Pregnant," she finished.
Veronica nodded.
She looked at her with sympathy, "Oh V," she said hugging her.
"Look, I gotta go," Veronica said.
"V, talk to me please."
"What is there to say Mac? Tha-That I'm knocked up at 19. That the dad is dating one of my friends. Tha-That he doesn't even know? That the one guy that I could count on the most, my my own dad is not talking to me? That I wish I could take it back? What do you want me to say?" she sniffed, "I'm scared Mac. I'm scared."
Mac reached out to her and pulled her to a hug. "Oh V. I'm sorry."
"I-I don't know what to do Mac."
"Hey" she said pulling away from her. "I'm here for you, okay?"
She nodded.
"Whatever you decide. I'm here for you."
Veronica nodded, and let the tears fall from her eyes as Mac pulled her into a hug again.
….
Veronica walked into the house seeing her dad eating in the kitchen. "Hi dad," she said.
He didn't respond. Backup ran up to her, and she petted him. He then went to his bowl of food and started eating.
"Dad, are you really going to ignore me, and not talk to me?" she asked. He continued eating and reading the newspaper. "Dad," Veronica said walking up to him. "It's me your daughter."
He just went on eating. "Fucking look at me dad!" she exclaimed. "How can the one guy I love the most not talk to me?"
He looked at her, "How can the one girl I love the most betray me the way she did?" he asked.
"Well, be happy because I have an appointment to take care of it," she said and walked to her room slamming the door.
…
(Two hours later)
There was a knock on her door.
"Come in," she said while she was wiping the tears from her eyes.
"Sweetie," Keith said walking in. "Are you okay?"
"I'm okay," she said pretending to be reading on her laptop.
"What did you mean that you're going to take care of it?" he asked sitting on her bed.
"Exactly as it sounds," she said not looking up from her computer.
"Veronica, can you look at me please," he said reaching over and putting his hand on hers.
She looked up at him, "Dad, I'm sorry," she said as tears streamed down her face.
"Oh sweetie," he said grabbing the computer, and placing it on the bed. "I'm sorry. I should have been more understanding."
"I-I don't know what to do anymore dad."
"Listen," he said pulling away from her, so they looked eye to eye. "We will figure this out, okay?
"Dad-"
"Veronica, do not get rid of it. We will figure this out."
"But I haven't even told Logan."
"Veronica, we will figure this out. With or without Logan, okay?"
She nodded, "Dad I-"
"You're my daughter, okay. I love you," Keith said.
She nodded, "I love you too dad."
"We will figure this out okay?" he asked hugging her and holding her close.
