I present to you F! The words are family, friend, and filthy.
In a dark alley was a small, thin teenager quickly climbing up the fire escape of a tall building. He reached the roof of the building and stood near the edge looking around the large city he was in. He looked up when he felt a cold flake upon his skin and saw snow. Excited, the teen flopped down and stared up at the sky with a content smile on his face. The boy fell asleep soon afterwards, smile still on his face.
––––––––
"Come on, Bunny! Faster!" yelled a colorful, petite woman.
"Do we have to take the helicopter? My car is faster!"
"Yes. Bun-" the woman paused in the middle of her sentence. On the roof, near the fire escape, was a teen. He was on the thin side and he was sleeping. "Tooth, is that... a teenager?"
"Yes, I believe it is."
A small, blonde man motioned towards him and Tooth motioned towards Bunny and Sandy to follow her. They all stoop down next to the teenager and look at each other, daring each other to be the one who wakes him up. Sandy takes the initiative and prods the boy in the head. The boy groaned, and in typical teenager fashion, he rolled over and continued sleeping.
"Hey, ankle biter, wake up!"
The teen was startled and nearly punched Bunny but he moved back quickly.
"Dudes! Don't you know better than to get in a person's personal bubble?" The teen indicated pointing to all of them who were standing quite close.
"Dude, don't you know you are supposed to sleep in a bed, not on a roof?" responded Bunnymund.
"Yes, but I did not mean to fall asleep. I was just watching the snow come down last night."
"What's your name?" Tooth asked, interrupting Bunny before he said anything again.
"Jack Frost. My name is Jack Frost."
"Jack, are you aware you are the roof of the MVX News?"
"So that's what this building is!"
"Why aren't you at home?"
"Don't got one."
Tooth, Bunny, and Sandy all look shocked at the news. Sandy began to make rapid movements with his hands.
Jack looked at Sandy in confusion. "Sorry, but I don't understand any of that."
Sandy looked down and Tooth said said what Sandy was signing, "How can you be homeless? You are just a child," she continued, ignoring Jack's look at child, "You are young, where is your family?"
"I'm not a child! And I don't need anyone or their pity!" Jack quickly ran off the building to the fire escape and ran off. Shocked the three news reporters just stood there. They continued to the helicopter, realizing they had a job to do.
Running along the streets, Jack dodged people and ignored their rude comments, not caring what they thought. He just wanted to get away from those people on the roof.
He turned a corner and reached the park that he spent a lot of his time in. There were already kids in the park, so Jack made a perfect snowball and threw at one of them.
The kids didn't notice him, but that was okay. He was used to it. As long as they had some fun. Kicking at the snow, Jack put his his hands in his hoodie pockets and walked around the park.
–––––––
"That poor kid." Tooth said to Bunny and Sandy as they prepared the helicopter for flight.
"I wonder how he became homeless." Bunny responded.
Sandy signed, 'What happened to his family?'
"We have no way of knowing, unless we find him again." Tooth said.
–––––––
Jack was lurking near his favorite stores and restaurants where he knew he could always find something to eat or wear if he really needed to. He always went into the toy store there and looked at the toys.
Jack knew the owner of the store as well. His name was North and he reminded Jack of Santa Claus. North always let Jack enter the store but knew he never bought anything. North was curious but never asked. He would mention Jack to his friends the next time he saw them.
–––––––––
North was in his home along with his friends. Tonight, they were going to eat dinner and watch a movie. A fun night in. At least it was until North brought up Jack.
North said, "Okay, so there's is this child who always comes into my store and looks at the toys but he always leaves vithout buying something. I often see him lurking on the street as vell."
"Wait, Jack? What does he look like?" Bunny asked.
"Vell, he is thin, with white hair and he wears a light blue hoodie and brown pants but no shoes."
Tooth, Bunny and Sandy all looked at each other and Tooth said, " I think we met him. He was on the roof of our work building sleeping. We woke him up and he basically told us he had no home or family."
"That sounds like Jack."
"What do we do with him?"
"Ve do nothing. I vill talk to 'im next time he is in my shop."
–––––––––
"Wind, stop it!" Jack declared loudly towards a girl climbing a large tree.
"No! You need to play with me!" replied a young girl who fluttered about without a care in the world.
"I didn't hear a please!"
"Jackie, will you please play with me?"
"Hmm. No."
"Pretty please, with vanilla ice cream on top?"
"Well, for the ice cream, sure!"
"Yay! Let's have a snowball fight!"
Smirking, Jack stooped down and made a perfect snowball and promptly hit the fluttering girl on her back. In response, the girl threw a snowball back at him and hit him in the face. The war was on.
––––––––
"That was the best snowball fight ever, Jack!" Wind told Jack as they walked along the street, as if they had real place to go.
"Wind, you say that every time we have snowball fight."
"But this time it's true!"
"You say that as well."
Right after the pale teen stated this, they stopped in front of an old, decrypt hotel.
They walked inside and went up the stairs on the left, all the way to the top, which was really only three flights of stairs. On the top floor, there were old mattresses, ratty blankets, flat pillows and the faint smell of something rotten that never went away no matter how many times the place was cleaned.
Jack jumped onto a mattress and just about fell asleep; however, the young girl jumped on him and prevented him from falling asleep.
"Oof! Wind! I'm trying to sleep! Come on. Lay down next me."
Looking apologetic, Wind gently laid down next to Jack, and snuggled really close. Jack pulled Wind closer with his arm and snuggled down and closed his eyes. Wind did the same and before you knew, both were asleep.
–––––––––
Wind was the first to wake up. Looking up towards Jack, she noticed he was still deeply asleep. She gently crawled out from under his arm and left the room with no hesitation.
When Jack woke up, he noticed that Wind was gone and he knew exactly where she was but he did not like her home.
Her mother was neglectful and her father was never home so she often went hungry and rarely had new clothes to wear. The kids at her school always made fun of her because she had no good clothing and they were always mean to her. Then she found Jack. He was nice to her and even though he had no home, he fed her and even managed to clothe her. They still were pretty ratty but they fit her well and they were warm. She loved them.
–––––––––
Tooth was at the local elementary school to pick up her daughter, Baby Tooth. Of course, that wasn't her real name. Her name is actually Cantelina, but nobody called her that.
Cantelina looked so much like her mother, people simply called her Baby Tooth and the name caught on. All the children at the school loved Tooth and always crowded around her but there was one child who was always dressed in ratty clothing and sat alone.
But then, Tooth saw a young teenager and she realized it was Jack! The child who sat alone quickly jumped up and hugged him around the middle. The child left the yard with the pale teenager.
Tooth quickly bent down and asked Baby Tooth, "Who is that girl over there?"
Baby Tooth responded," That's just Mayrah. She doesn't have any friends. Except for Jack."
"Is Jack the boy she left with?"
"Yeah. He's all she talks about. I don't know why."
"Hmm, interesting. C'mon. Let's go home."
––––––––
"North! Where's Bunny and Sandy? I learned something new about Jack!" Tooth yelled bursting into North's store.
"I do not know vhere Sandy and Bunny are. Should I call them?"
"Yes!"
"Okay. Be right back. Vait here."
North left quickly and returned within two minutes informing Tooth they will be here soon.
After a couple minutes wait, Bunny ran in with Sandy right behind him.
"North! Why the are we here? Was Pitch threatening you again?"
"No, no! Nothing like that! Tooth came bursting in saying she knows something about Jack."
"Well what is it, Sheila?" Bunny asked, Sandy nodding his head in agreement.
"So, I was picking Baby Tooth up from school, when I see Jack there! I asked her who he was with and she responded that it was Mayrah! Jack is Mayrah's only friend according to Cantelina."
"What do we do with this information?"
"Ve talk to Mayrah of course! She is a kid, she's bound to come to toy store some day!"
"Not necessarily! We could always have Cantelina talk to her."
Sandy made a thumbs-up at that.
"Ve shall do that then!"
"I'll ask Cantelina to ask her about Jack then. I have to go pick her up from her friend's house now anway. Bye!" Tooth said, waving as he walked out the door.
"I vonder vhat Baby Tooth vill say about Mayrah and Jack."
"Maybe they are siblings or something."
Sandy shook his head, disagreeing. He signed, 'No. Not siblings. If they were siblings, Mayrah probably would not be in school considering Jack being homeless.'
"True. Well, I have to go to work now. Bye North, Sandy."
Sandy left behind Bunny, pointing to his wrist where a watch would be worn.
"Of course. Good-bye Sandy."
Muttering to himself, North went back to work on his newest toy design.
––––––––
"Oh Baby Tooth! Can I ask a favor?"
"Of course, Mom. What is it?"
"Can you ask Mayrah something for me?"
"I guess. What is it?"
"Ask her about Jack please."
"Why do you wanna know about Jack?"
"I'm just curious, that's all"
"Okay."
"Thank you, Cantelina."
––––––––
"Hey Mayrah." Cantelina said, approaching Mayrah at lunch.
"Oh. Hi, Cantelina. What do you need?" Mayrah responded, curious as to why Cantelina was talking to her.
"My mom wanted me to ask you about Jack for some reason. I don't know why."
"Oh. Well what does she want to know about Jack?"
"I don't know. She just told me to ask you about Jack."
"Okay. Well Jack is my best friend and he takes care of me. He doesn't have a home but that's okay because he gets money and feeds me and gives me clothes on special days like my birthday.
"He has white hair and wears a blue hoodie with brown pants. He doesn't wear shoes though. I don't know why. He is super fun and he is my favorite person in the whole entire world!"
"What makes Jack so fun?" Cantelina asked curiously.
"I don't really know. He just is. Despite being a teenager, he still plays like our age. It's great!"
"Cool. Thanks, Mayrah! Oh, and you're really cool."
"Thanks Cantelina! You're really cool too!"
–––––––––
"Mom, I'm home!" Cantelina yelled as she entered her modest sized house.
"Hi, sweetie! How was your day?" Tooth asked her from the kitchen. Cantelina entered the kitchen and saw her mom using her laptop and she knew she was looking at pictures of teeth instantly. That was the only reason Tooth was ever on the computer.
"My day was splendid. I talked to Mayrah today."
"That's great! What did she say?"
"Well, she basically said that Jack is her best friend and takes care of her. He's homeless but she's cool with it and he feeds and gives her clothes. She said he has white hair and wears a blue hoodie and brown pants but never any shoes. He is her favorite person and says he super fun."
"Hmm. Interesting. Thanks Cantelina! You are the best in my whole world!"
"Welcome Mom! You are the brightest in mine."
–––––––––
"Jack! Someone asked me about you today! They wanted to know all about you!"
"Really?" Jack responded, with a worried tone slightly hidden. "What did they ask? Who asked?"
"It was Baby Tooth. She said her mom wanted to know more about you for some reason. She just wanted to know why I liked you so much."
"Baby Tooth? That's an interesting name. What did you tell her?"
"Cantelina is her real name. I told her that you took care of me and was super fun!"
"Okay. As long as she doesn't know where I 'live', then we're good."
"Don't worry! No one but me knows. Come on! Let's go to the park!" Wind yells, dragging Jack by his hand.
Laughing, he responds, "I'll race ya there!"
With more laughter, he raced ahead with Wind behind him yelling, "No fair!"
––––––––
"Tooth. What did Mayrah tell you about Cantelina and Jack?" Sandy signed.
"Mayrah basically said that Jack took care of her and that he was super fun." Tooth responded.
"This is interesting. Ve must find Jack and confront him." North said.
"Yeah, 'cause that totally worked last time." Bunny responded sarcastically.
"But this time, we will know what to say and what to expect." Tooth responded.
Let's go to the park, Sandy signed, that's where Jack probably spends a lot of time there.
"Come on! There's no time like now! To the sleigh!"
"I'll be right behind you, North."
"Bah! Nonsense." North responded, grabbing Bunny and dragging him to a red pickup. "Sleigh vill suffice!"
Bunny sat in the back with his arms crossed and a glower on his face.
"Humph."
"Bunny ssshh. To the park!" North yelled, putting his truck in drive and zooming away.
––––––––––
Jack was sitting on a swing in the park's playground. It was his favorite thing to do when he was at the park when he was not with Wind or any other children, having fun.
But, today, there were no children in the park. The parents said it was too cold outside despite the fresh layer of snow and all the begging they must have heard.
Jack was swinging sedately when he heard his name being yelled. His face scrunched in confusion. It was an unfamiliar voice. How did they know his name?
He looked in the direction of the voice he heard and he saw the people who asked him all those questions about him when they found him sleeping on the roof.
Quickly, Jack stood up and ran in the other direction. He heard the girl's voice yell, "Jack! Wait! We just want to talk!"
Jack ran even faster. He heard the thin one with his hair in a ponytail say something to the others, and he looked back and saw that he was gaining on him and Jack ran as fast as he could. But his fastest was not fast enough.
The man caught up to him and got in front of him and cut him off. Jack was about to turn around and run the other way but the rest of the group was behind him. Angry, Jack sat on the ground with a huff. The group followed and sat in front of him.
"What do you want?" Jack requests grumpily.
"We just wanted to talk." responds the only female of the group.
"Talk about what?"
"You in general." responded the one with the ponytail.
"And if I don't wanna talk?"
"Then we'll just sit here until you do."
Jack stared stonily at them and said nothing. They stared right back at him. Not a word was spoken in over an hour until Tooth remarked in a soft tone, "I promise all we want is to talk. If it is too personal, just say so. We won't force you."
"Fine," Jack hesitantly responded, "but, I will not hesitate to leave if I don't like where it goes."
"That's fine." responded North.
"Now then, just tell us a little bit about yourself, and we'll go on from there." Bunny begins.
"Okay. I'm Jack Frost, I am 16 years old and I am homeless. I do what I want," and as he said this he gave each of them a look that they clearly understood as, you can't do anything about it, "and I don't like wearing shoes."
"You're off to a good start." Tooth responded in a sugary sweet voice.
"Why don't you like shoes?" Bunny asked quickly.
"I don't know! I haven't worn them in years though. I guess they make my feet feel squished and sweaty and I do not like that feeling."
"Vhat is awful about it?" North translated for Sandy, who signed the question.
"I don't like the warmth, I guess." Jack comments with a shrug. "I never have liked warm temperatures or heat."
"Jack, do you have any friends?" Tooth asked, even though she already knew the answer.
"I have one. But she is more like a little sister. I take care of her because her mother- if you can even call her that- does not."
"Vhat does her mother do?"
"You see, that's the thing. She doesn't do anything! She probably forgets she even has a daughter. And her dad is never home which does not help."
"What does her dad do all day?" Bunny asked.
"Work! I don't even know what his job is but it must be oh so important if he is never home!" Jack answered him with a shift into sarcasm beginning at 'oh'.
"What is her name?" Bunny asked.
"Mayrah, but I call her Wind." the homeless teen responded with a hint of fondness heard in his voice.
"Vhy Vind?" North asked.
"She flutters about and is never still. Just like the wind."
"Jack, where do you sleep?" the colorful one asked.
"Wherever I want." he responded quickly.
"And in the vinter, how do you keep varm?"
"I don't get cold. Are we done? I need to find some food. I haven't eaten in a couple days."
"No. You will come with us. We'll give you a proper meal." Jack began to argue but was interrupted when Bunny continued, "No arguments."
"Fine!" he responded, exasperated, "but can I at least know your names?"
"Of course, Sweet Tooth! I am Toothiana, but call me Tooth." replied the woman dressed vibrantly.
"I'm Nick, but they call me North." responded the man dressed in red like Santa Claus.
"I'm Bunny." answers the man with long hair.
"This is Sandy. He is mute but he knows sign and can hear perfectly fine." North says for the yellow man.
"Okay. Thats better. But you don't have to feed me. I can manage on my own."
"And that is vhat ve vant to fix. We are going to change it from managing to thriving."
"How are you going to do that, huh?" Jack told him.
"By inviting you to live with us. In fact my daughter, Cantelina, knows Mayrah."
"Wait, Cantelina? Also known as Baby Tooth?" Jack questioned.
"That's the one!"
"Wind has told me about her! She is one of the nicer ones in her class."
"Then let's get going. I know a great place."
–––––––
"It's official. I love freshly cooked food." Jack announces followed by a satisfied sigh.
North translated for Sandy, "When was the last time you had a fresh cooked meal?"
"I don't know. Probably the last time I lived in a house and that was six years ago."
"You've been on your own for six years! That is way too long!"
"You get used to it." he responded with a shrug.
"But you should not have to get used to it." Jack shrugs again.
Tooth jumped out of her seat and almost smacked North, Bunny and Sandy all in one swing of a hand and exclaimed loudly, "I had the best idea ever!"
"What's your idea Sheila?" Bunny asked, a bit slowly.
"Jack can live with me and Cantelina! I can even adopt Mayrah!"
"NO WAY!" Jack yelled. "I will not! I don't do well with rules. I'm all about fun."
"Just try it. Please? Mayrah can even be there!"
"NO!" Jack yelled, and then got up and left the restaurant, with many eyes staring after him.
"Vell, that vent vell."
–––––––
Jack was sitting on the rooftop of a tall skyscraper leaning against the wall. His head was against his knees and he was mumbling.
He kept repeating, "No. Don't want it. Don't need it. No, no, no. But Mayrah... NO! Don't need their pity. Nope, nope, nope." over and over again. He was rocking back and forth and he was close to tears.
However, Wind came up to him, and sat next to him. She said nothing. She didn't even hug him or comfort him. Not how you think. Just her being there was enough. Eventually, Jack calmed down and he leaned his head back against the wall.
"What happened?" she asked softly.
"A group of people invited us to live with one of them. You know her daughter. Baby Tooth."
"Really?" she asked curiously.
"Yeah. But then I freaked out on them and ran here. I turned down the offer."
"Why?"
"I don't want their pity or sympathy."
"That wasn't their reason. I know Baby Tooth's mom and she honestly cares. You should go back and accept the offer."
"It's too late. I ruined it. Anyway, I don't know where they would be."
"I bet they are at Baby Tooth's house! Come on! I know where she lives." Wind got up and ran off. Quickly, Jack followed her. They ran all the way to Tooth's house. They both were gasping for breath by the time they reached the door. It was a few minutes before they were breathing almost regularly.
Wind went in front of Jack to knock on the door, knowing he was too nervous to do himself. The door opened and there stood Tooth in all of her color. "Jack! Mayrah! Did you reconsider the offer?"
"Jack shrugged with his hands in his pockets and replied, "Yeah, I guess I did."
"Oh, This is great! Come on in!"
Jack walked into the house awkwardly and looked around. Inside, there was a lot of greens, reds, blues, and yellows. Jack commented, "You really like vibrant colors, don't you?"
"Just a little bit." Tooth replied, pinching her fingers together.
They all stood awkwardly around the room. Tooth, struck with an idea once more, said, "I'll show you to the room you can stay in. Mayrah, you can stay in Cantelina's room. If you decide to stay you can decorate however you want."
Jack followed behind Tooth silently with Wind by his side. Tooth opened the door to one room while looking at him, and Jack took that to mean that it was his.
He entered the room and watched Tooth lead Wind to another room before he fully entered the room designated as wandered the room, his hand gently brushing against the walls, the dresser, the desk, the bed, a nightstand, and then sat at the window, looking out.
On the street, he saw no movement and heard silence. Sighing he wandered over to the bed and laid down on it. Before he knew it, he was asleep.
–––––––––
"Tooth? Can I ask a question?" Wind asked softly, peeking around the corner of the kitchen,
"Of course, Mayrah." Tooth responded.
"Why did you ask Jack if he can stay with you?"
"Well, I believed he deserved a home and since you know Cantelina and you know Jack, I figured that it would be a good idea."
"Oh. He said you invited me too."
"Yeah. We kinda cornered him and made him answer some questions. Some of them involved you and he told us about your mom and dad.'
"You cornered him! That's not fair. He has to have a way to leave! He does not do well with no escape. And make him answer questions! No wonder he was close to a breakdown when I found him."
"Wait. Does he have anxiety?"
"Not diagnosed, but I'm pretty sure he does."
"Okay, that makes sense. But he didn't have to answer what he didn't want."
"That's a bit better. Oh, and where is Cantelina? I haven't seen her."
"She's at her dad's house tonight. Would you mind getting Jack? It's almost dinner."
"Of course she is. I forgot! And I'll get him."
––––––––
"-ack! Wake up! It's time for dinner." he heard somewhere from the depths of his sleep-addled mind.
"I'm up." he mumbled before turning over.
"Jack. Wake up!" was heard before he was shoved off the bed. He landed on the ground with a muffled, "Oomph."
"What was that for?" he mumbled sulkily.
"It's time for dinner, Jack! Come on!" Wind replied enthusiastically before darting of his room, knowing he would follow her. Jack got off the floor and went down the stairs to the kitchen and saw a nice simple meal of spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread. The white haired teen sat at the table and gave himself a small serving of spaghetti and a piece of bread and began eating.
Jack ignored the glances Tooth gave him every once in a while. he finished his food quickly and leaned back in his chair. He looked at Tooth quickly and quickly looked down again. "Hey, Jack? Wanna build a snowman?" Wind asked him, noticing how awkward he felt. Smiling gratefully, Jack nodded. Wind led him to the backyard and they began to work. Tooth smiled slightly, and knew he would be alright.
––––––––
Two years later...
"Congrats my little graduate! You did so well!" Tooth said to Jack as he walked towards their little group.
"Ve are proud of you, Jack!" North remarks.
'Way to go!" Sandy signed.
"You did well, mate." Bunny stated.
"Thanks, guys!" Jack replies, hugging all of them in his blue graduation robes.
They leave Jack's graduation soon after all the other well-wishers wish them well.
Back in his room, Jack sat contemplating his life before he met Tooth. He was often lonely, and hungry. But afterwards, he gained many friends, especially once he started going to school. He became popular but for him, family came first.
Especially Mayrah and Cantelina. He picked them up from school and they had practically ruled his life. Especially once he got his driver's license. They had him wrapped around their pinkies but he did not care. He loved it.
Now he was going to college and was going to be a ski instructor or something to do with snow. He sighed with content before he got up and left his room. Before he left fully, he looked back and smiled.
