"Alex."
Kara's out-of-breath voice pulls the elder Danvers siblings from her attempt to open her locker the next morning. And in no way was she daydreaming about how carefree Maggie had been the previous afternoon laughing and joking with Clarke and Lena during what she guessed to be a last mint study session at a favored hangout by many of their fellow high schoolers. 'Arkadia' the town pizza cravers or epic gamers destination.
"Kara." Alex greats "How was your talk with Maggie this morning?" she probes honestly curious by her own question.
Kara's smile got if anything even wider and more excited at the question even as Kara herself was almost doubled over in an attempt to catch her breath from her all-out sprint to catch her older sister before her first class as soon as Maggie wouldn't be roused by Kara's sudden dashed actions in leaving the 'newsroom' as the small office had been jokingly coined.
"havetagehersomething." Kara huffed talking more to the scuffed square of laminated floor under the sister's feet than at Alex herself.
"One more time Kar?" Alex jokingly asked as her lock clicked, and the locker door groaned open as her amused gaze remains trained on her younger sister.
"You, need to go get Maggie something for Valentine's." Kara repeats her voice a little steadier now she'd gotten her breath back.
"But she hates…"
"She outright admitted that well. That someone in this school could be the only one who'd get her to like this to use her words 'overly sickeningly sweet holiday'."
"And you think that lucky someone is me?" Alex asked unconvinced jealousy at the true someone layering her scoffed asking as the distracted teenager nearly jams her fingers tugging out another book from her locker.
"Come on Alex you can't not see the way she looks at you, how she only smiles at you when she's had a bad day, the way she always has an extra bottle of that gross orange coconut vitamin water stuff you and the rest of your jock buddies got the school board to stock up on even when you're the only ones who drink it."
"No that's just the machine she goes to it always kicks out…."
"You're smarter than this Alex. Can't you see that she's lying about the machine being broken?" Kara scoffed "She knows you love that yucky stuff so she buys it special for you just so she can see you smile first thing in the morning when she gives it to you.".
"So, what should I do Kara?" Alex questions the sounds of her locker door slamming closed echoing a little in the filling hallway yet neither sister cared about the few curious eyes the action drew. "You seem to have all the answers right now so tell me what the heck should I do?" Alex demands as she meets her younger sister's eyes.
Kara groans under her breath at the asked "Seriously?" she asks in retaliation knowing full well her sister hadn't finished pulling out the needed books for her first set of classes yet.
Alex checks her watch and then meets Kara's softer glare "It's almost time for class Kara I can't just ditch to go get a girl who might or might not like me as much as I like her valentine's gifts."
"Alexandra Danvers for once in your rule-driven life take a fucking chance." Kara answered drawing even more watching eyes as she all but shouts this at her elder sister. "You know Maggie. You know what she would think is sweet and what she would know as an obvious attempt to woo her." She reasons dropping her voice a little as she fidgets self-consciously with the lay of her glasses. "You want my advice, then take a damned chance."
Alex's arms wrap around her shoulder in a quick hug before a still dazed Alex takes off in a fast jog back down the hallway with a yelled "Thanks sis" over her shoulder back towards Kara.
"Nicely done, baby Danvers."
Kara tenses at the more playful tone sounding from behind her. "I had to have a similar talk with Lexa myself. I think we finally got those two knuckleheads to see reason." Anya smiled holding up her hand for a high-five.
"I just hope they won't get their hearts broken because of it." Kara sighs mirroring the move.
The chiming of the shop door blows any true chances of slipping in unnoticed once Lexa once notices the familiar car parked out front.
"Just a sec then I'll be right over to help." Winn was already calling out from the back corner of the shop whilst Alex and Lexa hastily attempt to hide among the store's front aisles.
"Gonna take more than a sec hot Schott, honestly you should be asking them to come help for a second opinion considering you don't trust mine even when you flat out asked for my help on this in the first place." Maggie points out and Alex inwardly swoons at the playful hostility in her tone. "
"Yeah, unless it's someone trying to pull an early morning robbery then all we'll end with is a Scooby Doo-worthy romp." Winn reasons earning an agreeing albeit stifled laugh from Alex and Lexa.
"Well just think if it does you skipped out on PE for nothing." Maggie muses with another friendly teasing note in her voice. "and screw that we just finished straightening up the candy fiasco as it was."
"I didn't skip out I just happened to pick up an extra shift around the same time that counts towards credits…." Winn defends.
"Only because you also said you'd look over the store's security for stronger safeguards if you were allowed to work first thing." Maggie reminded handing the broom back over to her friend's waiting hand.
"Yeah yeah, stop it with the scary good detective in training skills you're running late as it is, Sawyer." Winn reminds after a glance towards the ticking wall clock. "and if you don't get a move on your girl will think you've forgotten about her."
"Watch it, Schott." Maggie grumbles "It's bad enough with Clarke on my case I don't need you adding on." She sighed around the same moment Alex finally feels safe enough to peek around the end cap to watch her crush's leather jacket clade back as Maggie with Winn following her heads up towards the front counter.
Jealously roared in Alex's chest at the returned reminder of this someone who'd already turned Maggie's head until the sound of her own name draws her back to the not-so-quiet back and forth over by the register as Winn rings up Maggie's selections.
"Alex gets grumpy in the mornings and as cute as that is we also have a test today and she'll need to focus, and she can't do that is she's dehydrated. Its not a big deal." Maggie shrugged making Alex instantly regret not paying closer attention to what was being said when that was followed with a sighed. "but considering the last time I told a secret like this I ended up being kicked out by my parents and transferred here to finish out school after moving in with my aunt."
"I'm just saying it's not every day a hardcore "No Valentine' like yourself jumps ship all because of one girl." Winn was saying noticing Alex's not-so-subtle eavesdropping by this point with Lexa having wandered off towards the stores dwindling remainder of Valentine-themed options.
"Well, she's the only one who can make me consider liking this overpriced holiday but back to the point let me know how it goes with you and yours later alright? You're a good guy so if anyone breaks your heart I'm breaking their face."
"Aaww thanks, Sawyer." Winn grinned giving Maggie's shoulder a playful shove.
"Tell anyone I said that and when I make cop stats, I'm dragging you in and tossing you in holding for fun." Maggie threatened but Winn was already laughing as he rounded the counter for a departing hug.
That was until Lexa gives a completely out-of-character squeal of what could only be joy with a called "Alex get your cute butt over here and see how adorable this is" triggering Maggie's panicked spin turn Alex can already tell wasn't going to end well for her crush's ankle.
Alex lands hard onto her back at the unsteady motion of the attempted rescue with Maggie sprawled over her both of them already mirrored blushing shades of darkening red once they'd stopped moving.
"Morning, Sawyer." Alex manages to cough out mostly to keep from combusting at how nice the hard lines of her crush's body felt pressing down against her own.
"Hey, Danvers." Maggie rasps back
"Dang Lexie you don't waste time huh?" Alex if anything blushed an even darker shade of red at this when Lexa chooses now to emerge from the end of the aisles now carrying a lion plushy under her arm. "Hey Sawyer, glad Alex caught you, do you think Clarke would like this?"
Maggie blinks up at her for a few seconds as she and Alex slowly untangle from one another.
"Stay with her a second." Alex instructs mostly towards Winn than a still expectant-looking Lexa once Alex notices the way Maggie was leaning more to one side to avoid aggravating the obvious pain in her ankle.
"Alex the medical supplies are on aisle three not…." Winn calls after her earning a scoffed "Shut up Schott." From the already walking away Alex as Lexa gingerly helps a now limping Maggie towards the desk chair Winn had dragged out from the office.
"It seems to be only a sprain but I'll help you to see Mom before we go to actual class." Alex was already deciding coming back with several things in her hands. "this might sting a little." She adds already cracking a cold pack as she drops to her knees to get a better look at Maggie's already elevated ankle.
"That's why you brought along this cutie?" Maggie asked noticing a plushy dog among Alex's gathered supplies. "Emotional support plushy?" she guessed chewing her lip when she noticed the subtle hearts patterns sown into the dog's paws. Discreet yet adorable. Just like her Alex.
"Maybe." Alex agrees her cheeks coloring in a soft pinkish blush as she keeps her eyes on sliding on an ankle brace over Maggie's sock clade foot.
"Aaww and here I was thinking it was because you have a case of puppy love." Maggie chuckles already making grabbing hands towards the soft cocoa-colored stuffed pup. "Now gimme."
"Keep that up and I'm keeping her for myself." Alex snapped but the others could hear the empty threat of the comment.
"How about a trade?" Maggie offers still attempting to reach the withheld valentine's gift.
"What kind of trade?" Lexa probes before Alex could regain enough short-circuited brainpower to ask the question herself. Maggie's eyes never waver from Alex's own as she slowly beckons the other teen closer with one crooked finger. The move making Lexa playfully cover Winn's eyes with an overly dramatic "get a room before you do stuff like that."
The words earned the full force of one of Maggie's dimpled smiles as she leans in enough to slide her hands over the warmed skin of Alex's jaw. "Like I told your sister. Life is short so why not kiss the girls you wanna kiss?" the Latina reasoned.
"Am I one of those?" Alex hears herself asking her brain already short-circuiting again when she noticed the obvious way Maggie's darkening eyes were shifting between Alex's eyes then down to her lips and back again.
"Alex you're my only one." Maggie clarified before Alex closes the slim separation between their lips.
Not even the shrill ring of Maggie's phone could separate them causing Lexa to give a guilty "Sorry Sawyer." As she moved close enough to fish the thing from the occupied girl's jacket pocket.
"Sawyer where the hell are you?" Clarke's worried voice questioned once the call had been accepted.
"Hang on a sec and I'll send you a picture." Lexa answers when not even the sounds of her friend's worry could make the two kissing teens separate. The following picture turning into the background of both Alex and Maggie's phones.
