Chapter 7 – Surprise Indeed

"So where are you kidnapping me to," I side glanced Jasper as he made his way out to the highway. He chuckled.

"Darlin, I know how much you love surprises, so I'll plead the fifth," he said as he started speeding.

"You'll plead me to end your life," I mumbled as I rumbled through my bag. I found what I was looking for and began to take my make up off.

"Aww, I liked the way you looked," he said shifting gears.

I looked at him, "so now I have to wear it all the time then," I replied as I took the wipe and continued to take off the powered mess.

"Of course not, you would make a potato sack look like couture, it just enhances your features darlin. But I'm not complaining."

There was a few more minutes of silence as I finished cleaning up and watched the landscape pass by. "Is it a long drive?" I asked.

"A bit, I won't take you on an airplane if I can help it, but a five-day journey lessened by the fact I can drive very fast without getting caught by cops. Should be there in 3 days or less. Depending if you would like to stop on the way of course. You know, human needs, and all…."

"Cheeky vampire, did I tell you how much I hate your kind?" It was rhetorical.

"All the time, yet your surrounded by them at any given time," he smirked.

'Damn vampire'.

I don't know when I fell asleep, it was nighttime when we left, and it was well into the daytime when I woke up.

"Hello sleepy head," I heard Jasper mutter.

"Meh," I say as I rub my eyes and put my sunglasses on. "What time is it?"

"Ya know darlin, for a human, you really hate sunlight," he smirks as he makes a turn onto another highway.

"Yeah, yeah, been in Forks too long it seems," I yawn.

"It's around two in the afternoon."

"Holy shit, you serious!" I say as I look at my watch…. He wasn't lying.

He pulls over to the side quick and got out of the car, needless to say I was confused. I watched him go to the trunk, get something, and come back to the front. He got in and handed me some items. "I literally just stopped before I got back onto the freeway." He handed me an iced coffee and a veggie burrito.

"Gimme," I say as I down the coffee. I was in heaven. He just laughed.

"You're welcome darlin, I'll give you a bit and we'll stop somewhere to freshen up. Do you feel you can go another night drivin', or do you want to stop in a hotel to rest?"

"Jasper, you're talking to a girl who slept outside most nights of her life unless she was at the academy. I've roughed it more than this. This," I said gesturing around the car, "is a luxury. I'll be good if we stop to freshen up."

He nodded in response and kept driving. After about thirty minutes we stopped at a gas station. It was decent enough and while he gassed up I went to the restroom to freshen up. Once I was done, I decided to get some snacks for the road. I was getting water when I heard the bell to the door, but didn't pay any mind, until….

"You again?"

"You know it old man, so pay up," a low voice said.

I crept up the chip aisle to peek around. I saw a young guy with a gnarly looking sticking knife. 'A stick up?! You must be kidding me!'

"I paid already this month, I don't have anything right now," the old guy said. He sounded tired.

"Well, things are more expensive nowadays then when you were young old man," the guys said.

This needs to stop. I decided to grab some chips and go the counter. I placed them down on the counter.

"Uh, you shouldn't be here young lady," the old man said looking scared. All the while I kept a side eye to the idiot with the gun.

I smiled, "Isn't this a convenience store? I just want to buy these chips and the soda."

"Hey, girlie, give me your money while you're at it, and I'll be nice," the dude said itching closer.

"I don't feel like giving to a charity that harasses people," I say turning around to stare at him. He hesitated a bit seeing the determination in my eyes.

He pointed it right at my head, "You have a death wish girlie," he sniffed.

"You don't know my life," I sighed as I stood my ground.

"Really lady, you don't know him, he's killed people," the old man whispered.

"Go ahead," I say.

The guy gulped, "What?"

"Stick me," I sighed.

"Just give me your money girlie," he said touching the tip of the knife to my forehead.

I sighed. In the blink of an eye, I took his hand with the knife and twisted it till his wrist cracked, kicked his legs out from underneath him, and took the knife and had it right under his chin like I was going to cut his throat, as I sat on him with his arm twisted to his back.

"Like I said, you don't know my life," I told him in his ear.

"Who the hell are you?" he cried in pain.

In the meantime, the old man had pressed the button to call the cops. The sirens were coming closer. Just then Jasper walked in whistling.

"Need a hand darlin?" he asked.

"Nope." I said as I popped the 'p'.

"Who are you?" asked the old man amazed.

The cops pulled up and came in. They recognized who the man was and didn't ask to many questions. I put what I owed on the table, "like I said, no one knows my life," I said as Jasper and I walked away.

"Thank you," the old man whispered, but I heard him, I smiled.

"I hate people picking on others, if anything, poor man." I say as Jasper opened the car door and helped me in. He got in after me and started the car. We drove to where we got back on the highway.

"You didn't come in to save me," I said opening my soda.

"I saw and heard everything; you didn't need me. Although I can say if my heart had a beat, it would've been beating a thousand times a minute. You handled yourself well," he said winking.

I laughed. I looked around at the landscape. I've been around the north enough to know where I was at. "We're in Minnesota."

He nodded, "more or less halfway there."

"Hmm, it's not New York, is it?" I asked. I hated New York.

"Of course not darlin, I have more class than that," he said shockingly. I laughed. "Seems everyone wants to go to New York, except for you."

"Been there once, doesn't have much to offer me. Too damn crowded." I say as I open my chips. I actually wasn't that hungry. Just in a snacking mood.

"We should be there around this time tomorrow if we keep the same pace. Are you sure you didn't want to stop in a hotel," he asked changing lanes.

"No. I'm good. Music?" I asked pointing to the radio.

He nodded and I turned it on looking for a station. Surprisingly there was a classical station and I turned it up just a bit.

"You're in a good mood," he stated.

"I'm relaxed. Felt good helping that old gentleman. I haven't had too much action lately. I haven't sensed too many vampires." I said sighing into my seat and closing my eyes.

"That's true. They haven't been around too much. But I think that's a good thing."

I hummed in agreement and listened to the music. Eventually I drifted off again.

I heard voices but couldn't understand who they belonged too. There were so many.

'You don't deserve this legacy'

'Why haven't you done your job'

'People are suffering because you don't care anymore'

'You went from hunting those creatures to loving one'

That last one got me thinking. "Who the hell are you?" I asked looking around. There was nothing but bluish light coming from above me. I was just floating.

'Who are you to question me? I'm not the one who is lost on her path'

"What do you want?"

'What everyone else wants, for you to do your job'

"I am doing my job, I still hunt." This voice was annoying me.

'Yeah, sure. You're living with them'

"He's different."

'He's a killer. You're straying from your duty'

"Get out of my head!" I yelled.

All the voice did was laugh. I didn't like it. It was a certain laugh that gave you chills. All of a sudden, the light got brighter and there was something coming towards me. Fast. All I could do was try and turn, but I was floating, there wasn't much I could do but brace for impact. There was a shrieking sound, it got louder and louder, almost deafening. I put my arms up in front of me to protect myself. A few moments later I waited, and waited, nothing. I peeked from behind my arms and saw the huntress in front of me. I looked and she stood panting.

"What the hell," I said as I floated to her side, and she was burnt and bleeding.

"Huntress!" I said touching her, she shoved me aside.

The force of light came again and left just as quickly as it came. I had shielded my eyes, when I uncovered them and looked at her, she had a wound on her left side like she had been stabbed. It was bleeding profusely, she had it covered with her hand panting.

"December," she panted, "always watch, always listen. They want to do you harm. There is only so much I can do."

"Huntress, who is it," I asked trying to see to her wound but she shoved my hand away.

"You know them, they want to end it, end us. You can't let that happen. I will always defend your dreams, but it is you in real life, who must defend yourself. Otherwise, we both die." She panted. "Wake up."

"I…. I don't understand," I stuttered. This doesn't make any sense. "Let me try to heal you," I said coming closer. She shoved me back again.

"WAKE UP!" she shouted.

"But," I didn't finish. She hit me.

"Huntress!" I yelled panting.

"Whoa…." Jasper said grabbing my hand. "Darlin, calm down, it's me." he said shushing me and putting his hand on my face. "You're drenched." He got a hand towel from my bag in the back and put water on it from my water bottle. He dabbed my face to wipe the sweat off. "Sugar, what happened?"

I looked around and noticed we were on the side of the road in what looked like a wooded area. I calmed down a bit. I tried to even my breathing. The towel felt good.

"Darlin, you're worrying me, what's wrong? Was it another of those dreams?" he asked.

I just nodded. "It felt more real this time. She…. She.." I couldn't get it out. He didn't push, he just kept dabbing my face. I took a swig of water.

He sighed, "don't say anything now, just relax. We're almost there. Can you continue or do you need to stop somewhere to gather yourself?"

"I'm fine." I looked at him and he dared to quirck his eyebrow. "Really, I'm fine. I just need to stay awake. How much farther?" I took the towel from him and reapplied more water and put it on my face and cranked up the AC.

"About fifteen minutes. You've been out all night and most of the day. So, we're close. Do you need to stop at a rest stop?"

"Actually no, if there's plumbing where we're headed, I'll be good."

He chuckled and continued driving.

Not long I found we were winding up a hill away from the highway.

"You got a house," I stated looking in the wooded area we were driving through.

"Maybe," he smirked. I just rolled my eyes and continued looking around.

"Where are we?"

"Jamaica, Virginia."

I dropped my water bottle and looked at him, "come again?"

"Oh darling, you don't know how much I want to," he gazed at me.

I just realized what I said and picked up my water bottle and threw it at him, "Jasper Whitlock I swear you will regret that comment."

"Hardly," he said as he ducked.

We pulled around some trees and shrubs and came upon the most fantastic tudor house I have ever seen.

"Jasper," I said in awe.

We pulled up in front. It had a charming fountain and garden that you drove around to get to the front. It was two stories. Not that big, but it was just right. Vines were growing all in the front. the windows were stained glass but it wasn't bad. It gave the house some charm.

"You like it?" he asked.

Before I responded he got out of the car and held my door open. I just smiled and got out.

"It's yours. Well, ours, I bought it awhile back and Peter and Char have been keeping tabs while it was being worked on. All the original stuff has been restored."

"Surprise indeed," I smiled again and gave him a kiss. "Can we go inside?" I asked as I gazed the front of the house.

Next thing I knew he picked me up bridal style and took off in vampire speed to the house.
