Chapter 10 – Hell Has Frozen Over

During the next couple of days, it felt like hell had frozen over. There was an eerie calm that took over the Cullen house. Walking on eggshells was an understatement at this house. Bella was fine. Looking better than she had in weeks. She said she felt ok, just tired. But I had a feeling this was a calm before the storm. Everything about this pregnancy was not normal. Far from it. I mean hell, who births a vampire baby hybrid. I mean who!?

"Penny for your thoughts darlin'?"

I looked up to see Jasper smirking at me. I was leaning back against a tree outside by a small river.

"As many thoughts as I have, you'd be rich in pennies Major," I sassed back.

He leaned against me shoulder to shoulder, "you're concerned about Bella?"

I sighed. "As ever. You know me. I tried to research everything I could about her condition. There's nothing. Just some legends in Brazil. I might have to check those out once… once…"

"Once the birth happens, if she lives or dies," he finished.

"Yeah."

"Well, I say just kill the damn thing," came a voice from behind.

Jasper and I both turned to see Demetri looking at the river.

All I could do was chuckled. "Well don't think it hasn't crossed my mind Dems."

"I wouldn't dare think less of you huntress," he chuckled in return.

"Like Jasper said, we'll see how it goes. If Bella dies. It dies. At that point, I don't care what her wishes are," I said. Although I sounded brave, these two know how bad I would feel about it. But the job would be done either way. If I didn't do it, there were wolves out there who would. The Cullen's wouldn't be able to fight off all of them. Why would they protect something that killed Bella anyway? They claimed she's family, blah blah blah, but would they really protect something that caused her to leave this world? If they did, well, guess I have another job to do.

"December," came another voice, but from the house. It was Rose. "Bella wants help with a bath."

"On my way," I replied, kissing Jasper's cheek then jogging back towards the house.

"This is embarrassing," Bella whispered getting in the tub.

"Oh, hush Bella, let us take care of you," Rose said while getting a sponge.

I knew Rose cared about Bella to an extent. But I often wonder if it's the baby she cares about more. Jasper told me her story, and how she feels about babies. Ulterior motive at play here if I ever saw one. If Bella dies, and the baby lives, I know who will fight to the death to protect that baby. Having the excuse, "Bella wants the baby alive", crap.

Other than Bella throwing up once, the rest of the day went ok. Jasper was taking shifts with me. once of us was always with Bella, for the obvious reason. It was late evening, I was reading a book by the couch trying to stay out of the conversation that Bella, Alice, and Rose were having.

"What's wrong with the names?" Bella asked.

"Nothing, nothing at all, but…." Alice started.

"EJ is good, for a boy," Bella stated.

"What's going on?" Edward came in from outside. From yesterday to this evening, it seemed our shapeshifter friends got wind of the baby and are staking out the house. They don't want this baby born at all. So, everyone is taking shifts protecting the house. My main concern is Bella, so I'm inside with Rose and Alice. Jasper and Edward are here with Demetri. The others have gone hunting to build their strength in case something happens.

I smirked as I saw Alice roll her eyes at Demetri. He smiled too.

"Bella is playing around with names," I stated. "Horrible names."

"They are not!" Bella said slightly stomping her foot.

"Let's hear them then," Edward smirked.

"EJ, Edward Jacob for a boy," she said.

Edward sucked in his breath. I knew he didn't like that one.

"Ok, not horrible, and Edward, he did keep Bella safe while you were away, so kick that pride away." I said putting the book down.

He sighed, "you're right. Ok. What about for a girl?"

"Oh, this is a prize," I mumbled walking up to the group and crossing my arms.

"It's unique, if anything," Rose said rubbing Bella's back.

"I was playing around with our mom's names. Renee and Esme. So I combined them." She looked hopeful at Edward. "Renesmee."

"Renesmee," he said back. "Sounds good." Everyone knew he just lied, but we all chuckled.

"See, told you he'd like it," Bella smirked bending to get her cup. What happened next was a blur.

All I heard was a crack and Bella was bent in a weird way and she was screaming. She fell to her knees. "Edward her head!" I yelled. He dived and put his hand under her head before it hit the ground.

Edward carried her to Carlisle's medical room he had set up for Bella and put her on the bed. Alice already was talking to Carlisle. I had Bella's hand. Trying to comfort her.

"He said it sounds like the placenta detached," Alice stated. "We're going to have to take the baby out."

"Ahhhh!" Bella screamed. "Take him out, take him out!"

"Bella, you'll bleed to death." I said trying to rub her shoulder, I knew it wasn't helping. I looked at Edward and he put something in Bella from a needle. "Edward," I whispered.

"It's morphine. Hopefully she won't feel much."

"AAAhhhh, Edward he's dying, get him out!" Bella screamed.

"The morphine needs to spread." He said as Rose went to cut.

"Rose don't!" Edward said as Rose cut into Bella's stomach. Rose just looked at the blood covering her hand, "Rose!"

Alice grabbed Rose before she could get to Bella, "take her out!" I yelled. Alice took Rose out of the house.

"Edward," I said looking at Bella in pain.

Next thing I knew he dived his head to her stomach and started ripping pieces of skin. I just watched in surprise as he bored his way through. Blood was everywhere, Bella was still screaming. "It's ok Bella, look at me, look at me, breathe," I said, and she looked at me and tried to do what I told her. What seemed like forever but was not even a minute he took the baby out and it was crying. By this time Bella had calmed down a bit because of the morphine.

"Oh, it, Bella, Renesmee," Edward said showing Bella their baby girl. A normal, baby girl. He handed her to Bella.

"Oh, huh, so beautiful," Bella mumbled. "Oh! Ouch!" she said.

"No Renesmee," Edward cooed taking Renesmee back, seemed she nipped Bella.

"Huh, a nipper already," I chuckled and turned back to Bella, who did not look right. "Edward," I whispered worriedly.

He looked at my face then to Bella. Her eyes were dimming. "Bella!" he turned to see where to put Renesmee.

"Edward I'm ok, give me the baby," came Rose's voice. He turned to her; she looked ok. He gave her the baby. I watched as she took the baby away, I shook my head and turned my attention to Bella.

"Bella come on, look at me," I said trying not to cry. I don't cry.

"Bella love, come on, don't do this!" Edward said frantically. He went to a drawer and took out a huge needle.

I saw what was inside, "Edward," I whispered.

"My venom," he said as he plunged the needle into her chest and put the venom in.

We gave it a minute, but nothing changed.

"Edward, she's…." I started.

"No, she's not! Come on baby, don't do this," he gritted his teeth and started biting her all over her body to put more venom in.

I saw him, saw how rigged he was, how desperate. In all the abilities I had, I could not bring back the dead. If there ever was a time, I wish I had that power, now would be it.

Suddenly I heard whooshing. I looked towards the forest.

"Edward." I turned and looked at him.

"Alice! Jasper! Demetri!" he yelled and looked at Bella.

"December, stay here with her, please." He started walking away.

"I'll protect her Edward, no matter what."

He turned and looked at me. We looked at each other. I still didn't' like him, but we understand each other, and that was enough. He continued to go towards the front door with the others. Jasper rushed in and kissed me, even when I was covered in Bella's blood, he did not see it.

"I love you," he whispered grabbing my hair that was half down and all over the place. A red mess.

"I love you," I whispered back. By now, tears were rolling down my face. He wiped them away and nodded to me. He rushed back to the front of the house. I turned to look back at Bella. Who was lifeless.

I have to say, I'd been around death for years. Whether it was vampires or human. It didn't touch me, until now. I didn't like it.

"Bella, you bitch, you better wake up! I don't care if you are a vampire now, wake up!" I pounded her chest. Even though Edward broke it trying to give her CPR. I didn't care at that point; it could be fixed. I saw how determined Edward was in reviving her, my actions mirrored his.

"Bella please, I know how much you wanted that baby. Please don't make me do what I said I was going to do. I…. I don't want to kill her. She's a part of you…. I never understood why you chose Edward, but now, with Jasper, I see it. I still don't like him." I grabbed her hand and held it. "But I think we finally understand each other. So, I need you around to see that, WAKE UP!" I yelled. I was breathing hard. Then, I heard something. I looked around but nothing changed. I charged up my hearing, it was a heartbeat. I looked at Bella. It was her heartbeat. I put my ear to her chest. It's there. I straightened up and looked at her, I still held her hand. I looked at her hard with my senses. My face lightened; she's going through the change.

'But why isn't she screaming?' I continued to look, and the thought hit me. 'The morphine. She can't move because of that.' I sighed. Don't know if that's a good thing or bad. A scream brought me out of my head. 'Shit, I forgot about the fight. The wolves.' I looked at Bella. I bent down to her ear. "Bella, I don't know if you can hear me, but if you can, the wolves are outside trying to get in. Everyone is fighting to protect you and Renesmee. You have my word, this ends now. Know she's being protected and taken care of. You go through your change. Be confident, be wise, be the kick ass Bella, I know you are." I kissed the top of her head and straightened up. I closed my eyes and breathed. My eyes shot open, and they were white and sparked. The power of the huntress flowed through me full force.

I began walking through the hall towards the front door. I heard all the commotion. I stepped through the door and saw the scene unfold. Alice and Demetri were fighting one. Everyone else was being cornered by the house. They didn't see me.

"Carlisle at this rate we'll lose, we're outnumbered." Emmett said.

"I won't let them hurt my family," mumbled Edward.

At that statement I pulsated my power out and a huge forcefield shot out and over the family and hit the wolves and pushed them back full force into the trees. It was obvious some of them got hurt. Alice and Demetri came rushing to Jasper's side. They looked up at me since I was still on the stairs. I started walking down. Carlisle and Edward parted to let me through, smart.

"Ember," Jasper whispered.

I grabbed his hand as I passed and let go to stand in front of them, I brought down the shield. The wolves gathered about ten feet in front of me. Obviously, they didn't want to get too close. Even though they were in wolf form, I understood them. Edward translated for the family.

"Huntress, you protect these monsters? That abomination?" came what seems to be the leader of the pack.

"I protect a family, that's been accused of said abomination. She is half vampire, half human. If anyone dares go after her, they will die by my hand." I said, eyes glowing white in the dark. I looked over at a brown wolf, "it seems you were not given the full story."

"I don't need one!" said the leader, a big black wolf. "Bella is dead, and that thing lives. That's all I need.

"Bella is not dead. I heard her heartbeat myself." I heard sighs of relief behind me.

"Lies!" said the brown wolf.

I sparked my shield again when I saw them come closer. "Listen now and listen good you stubborn asses. I am the huntress. The legend. I vowed to kill the baby myself if Bella died. She is not dead, which means the baby lives." My power sparked in my hands through my body. It seems I was live wire at this point. I was pissed. "If anyone, and I mean anyone, tries to harm Bella, the baby, or this family, I will have no problem killing them. Not one ounce of sympathy will pour from me. I will state this again, this family is under my protection. I shot my hands up and produced a shield with my warrior sickle and shield on it.

"What is that?" Emmett asked.

"Her protection mark," Demetri whispered.

The brown wolf, Jacob, ran into the shield by got thrown back like nothing.

The mark glowed for a second and vanished along with the shield. "My powers long surpass your treaty and powers. I rule over all, and you know it. You are friends of Bella's, if you wish to see her and you come with no ill will, you are welcome. But if there's any secret intent, the shield will know, and you will be killed. This is your only warning." I turned to head back inside to help clean up Bella. The others started heading back in. I stopped. "Jacob, I know this is hard for you. The sooner you deal with it and let it go, the sooner you will be happy." I continued to head inside followed by Jasper.
